A study has been carried out on the use of solvent extraction, instead of the traditional zinc dust cementation process, to remove copper from concentrated zinc sulphate leach solutions. In a series of experiments using plant solution containing 1.9 g/L Cu, 2 g/L Fe, 173 g/L Zn, 7.9 g/L H,SO,, 0.25 g/L Cd, 15 mg/L Co etc. and LIX 622 in SX-1, up to about 97-98 % of copper present in the zinc sulphate leach solution was extracted with negligible co-extractions of zinc, iron, cadmium, cobalt, etc. pH modification was not required for this reagent. The copper loaded organic was almost completely stripped using 150 g/L sulphuric acid. Investigations into the effect of any possible organiclextractant contamination on zinc electrowinning showed (if any) little effect on current efficiency if the organic contamination is less than 45 ppm; current efficiencies of 95-97 % were obtained. At organic contaminations higher than 45 ppm, the current efficiency dropped to about 92- 94 %. Visually, the organic-contaminated cathode sheets had rough surface morphology, becoming more intense with increasing organic concentration, compared to the non-contaminated cathode sheets.

The Robbins Company has developed a boring machine, with a rubber packer serving as the gripper system, for blind boring of raises without using drill pipe. This machine is the BorPak and has many applications for use in the mining industry which will improve productivity. In addition to the cost savings, the boring method will lead to increased safety in constructing blind raises. The advantages of using the BorPak in a mining environment will be discussed together with possible applications.

An investigation of multi-shaft airflow problems by the author in 1976 (1) was presented in the hope of arousing considerable written comment, but in fact-. only one contribution (2) was forthcoming. The investigation in this paper is taken several stages fur¬ther, because the matter is of major importance in many American hard rock mines with complex networks extending over thousands of meters vertically. The examples used have all been generated thermodynamical¬ly and checked by motive column (denisty) calculations. Dry air has been used to reduce the amount of time spent on the rather complex calculations, but it has been shown (3) that the principals developed apply equally well to air/vapor/water mixtures. Initially the subject is investigated using both thermodynamic and motive column analyses. The latter part of the paper concentrates on a motive column presentation. Both methods are, of course, equally valid and give identical answers to any situation when correctly applied, as is shown in the worked examples.

Crocidolite is a well-known causative agent for mesothelioma. However, studies have shown that the pathogenicity of the fiber from different mines varies considerably and it has been postulated the parameter that appears most likely to account for this variation is fiber width although this has never been formally confirmed. To date, crocidolite appears to be the only asbestos mineral for which an epidemiological study comparing the risk of mesothelioma in a population exposed to ‘thin’ fibers with another exposed to ‘thick’ fibers of the same species may be carried out. Finnish anthophyllite, South African amosite, and African Transvaal crocidolite can also be classified as thick fibers, and there is a paucity of mesotheliomas in populations exposed to them compared to those exposed to thin Cape crocidolite. No thin occurrences of these minerals are known. Our previous study looked at crocidolite from several sources. The present study considers the amphibole anthophyllite found in many places in the world. This mineral, regardless of source, does not show the same variation in fiber width found with crocidolite from different areas. All anthophyllite fibers that have been mined may be classified as thick and populations exposed show very low levels of mesothelioma. We suggest the most likely explanation is related to the fiber width distribution and a concomitant reduction in the ‘Stanton fiber size’ fraction.

The presence of gold or tin in a particular place in payable quantities may be suspected from geological and prospE;cting reports. It behoves the engineer by judiciously spaced boreholes or pits to establish whether the place is exploitable with profit, and it is the purpose of this paper to set out the ways in which this is done. The various types of deposit to be considered occur in Malaya, Thafland and Borneo, in which countries the writer spent four years in estimating alluvials.The methods described were used in actual practice both by the writer and previous engineers for the same company. The subsequent exploitation of the alluvials evaluated by the methods given below shows that the recovery was as good as, and sometimes higher than, expected. No claims are made to the originality of the methods, but it is 'felt that they may be new to some engineers and< interesting to others contemplating alluvial testing.

Lattice parameters for the wurtzite form of' CdS mere measured by powder X-ray diffraction techniques over the temperature range 26° to 1000 K'. A negative thermal -expansion coefficient was determined parallel and perpendicular to the c axis below 13.5°K. Near 808°K, the curves of the a, parameter, the differential thermal expansion, and the resistivitv vs absolute temperature exhibited a reversible discontinuity. j\. direct determination of the lattice parameters of CdS over an extended temperature range is of particular use in interpretation of the effects of high pressure on the band structure of semiconductor materials. For example, Langer' has studied the effects of pressure on the absorption edge of CdS from 77°K to room temperature. In order to properly interpret his results it is necessary to know the change in lattice constants as a function of temperature for the wurtzite, zincblende, and rocksalt2 modifications of this material. Thermal-expansion measurements for CdS, wurtzite phase, have previously been determined over a limited temperature range.s74'5 The zincblende phases, of other compounds with similar bonding, have been investigated by Novikova et a! .'' Previous thermal-expansion measurements for metals with hexagonal symmetry have for the most part used bulk sample techniques for low-temperature result. Most X-ray measurements at low temperature have been on materials with cubic symmetry.'jQ The use of X-ray powder-diffraction techniques offers a convenient and accurate method of measurement over a wide temperature range. The X-ray method, besides measuring unit cell size, also provides information about change in structure type and the nature of some of the stacking defects present. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The thermal expansion was measured by X-ray powder-diffraction techniques. Lattice parameters for the range 300" to 1000°K were determined in a 19-cm Unicam camera. From 26" to 300°K a 34-cm back-reflection camera with the Van Arkel" film arrangement was used. The sample was bonded to a copper cold finger below a helium, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, dry ice, or ice brine bath in a metal cryistat. che inner bath was surrounded by another one for radiation shielding. Nitrogen was used in this outer bath for the very low-temperature runs while dry ice and acetone was used for the 195°K point. CuKa X-rays, filtered with a nickel foil, entered the cryostat through a 0.001-in.-thick aluminum window. During a typical 9-hr exposure the sample was continuously rotated through a 30-deg arc. Heat losses from the sample holder limited the minimum temperature attained to 26°K with helium in the inner dewar. Temperature calibration between 25" and 125°K was determined with an Allen Bradley 300-ohm carbon resistor. The resistor was attached to the back of the copper finger with a thin layer of silicone grease. Liquid He, HZ, N2, and O2 baths were used to calibrate the resistor. Temperature variation is estimated to be *2"K with a slightly higher uncertainty at room temperature and 264°K. The thermal expansion of high-purity germanium from 373" to 900°K was measured as a calibration for the Unicam camera. This value was compared with the known value1' for the thermal expansion. A discontinuity in the thermal-expansion coefficient of the CdS a, parameter was observed. Similar discontinuities in the resistivity and differential thermal analysis at the same absolute temperature indicate that the temperature error is *5°K in the temperature range above 500°K. The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PaDEP) has been issuing surface mining permits since 1984 that authorize remining in areas that will affect preexisting pollutional discharges. These permits require the mine operator to employ best management practices to reduce pollution loading from abandoned mine discharges. A total of 110 completed mining operations with 233 discharges were evaluated to determine the impact to water quality. Overall, acid loading from these discharges was reduced by 7, 200 kg (15, 900 lbs) per day or 61%. Metal loadings were also reduced. For acidity, 49% of discharges improved or were eliminated, 52% showed no significant change and fewer than 1 % got worse. Loading reductions resulted from a combination of reduced concentrations and lower flows.

A considerable amount of waste slag from the pyrite roasting process is discharged every year. Recovery of iron from the waste slag is of great interest for comprehensive use of mineral resource, reduction of environment impact and improvement of economical benefit to related companies. The objectives of the present work are focused on: (1) Compare various procedures for recovery of iron from the waste slag and select a best procedure for industrial trial which is roasting of the waste slag under reducing condition followed by magnetic separation; (2) Investigate the optimum conditions for maximum recovery of iron from the waste slag. The experimental result shows that under the treatment condition found in this work about 36 to 40% of the iron oxide was recovered from the waste slag, where the iron content in the concentrate is 57%. The total recovery ratio of iron, up to 70%, from the waste slag was achieved. After the treatment, sulphur content in the waste slag was reduced significantly and gangue materials, such as SiO2, Al2O3 and TiO2, were reduced effectively.

The current Queensland Government’s rehabilitation guidelines for post-mining landforms present a hierarchy of preferred outcomes for different areas within the mine site (see Figure 1). Within all areas, restoration of a ‘natural’ ecosystem is clearly prioritised as the preferred end land use, although it is not a mandatory practice. Beyond the official guidelines, there is also an implied preference for renaturalisation echoed in most environmental impact assessments and closure plans (Lamb, Erskine and Fletcher, 2015). In practice, however, ecosystem restoration does not extend to construction of a realistic topographic form, largely rejecting the ‘natural’ aesthetic implied by ecosystem restoration in favour of adopting a functional aesthetic in deference to standard engineering criteria.This presentation argues that the established disconnection between actual and implied landform aesthetics is indicative of a wider problem around end landform planning. It contends that such disconnects are the result of the impact of competing ‘ways of seeing’ (Bradley and Kearney, 2007) the same landscape, and reflect the struggle between, and inclusion of, these differing perspectives within the planning process itself. We propose that recognition of the complexity of landscape perceptions is key to improving post-mining landscape outcomes, and the misalignment between land use values and landscape aesthetics can be addressed by establishing an overarching framework for landscape preferences. As such, we outline the reality of stakeholder landscape preferences, and present a critical response to current planning practices within the life-of-mine (LOM).CITATION:Hine, A and Erskine, P, 2016. Some of effluents released by copper smelting plants are highly acidic (pH = 0~1) and contain arsenic and copper in relatively high concentrations (10~20 g/L). Usually arsenic is removed by precipitation with different reagents, such as lime, iron salts, calcium salts, aluminium salts, etc. Precipitates (often voluminous) that require further handling are formed and copper and other valuable components are lost. A method is presented for copper and arsenic extraction from acidic effluents. Effluents are treated in specially designed closed electrochemical cell without chemicals? addition. Gases formed are collected and treated for decomposing the eventual traces of As-bearing compounds and ensuring the environment protection. Initially copper of grade of 85 % is electro-won. Further about half of the initially available arsenic is separated as low-soluble, low volume mixture of intermetallic compounds, oxides and some elemental arsenic. At the next stage the main part of the left arsenic is immobilized as low soluble stable compound. Arsenic content in the treated acid is in the range 0.20~0.25 g/L. Acidity of treated effluent after first two stages remains practically unchanged and the solution can be re-used. Physicochemical and electrochemical processes, governing copper and arsenic removal, are discussed.

ANDROS INCORPORATED has designed, manufactured and delivered four handheld C02 DETECTORS and three handheld CH4 DETECTORS. These instruments are for in-mine safety use. The DETECTORS incorporated an NDIR optical/electronic analyzer design in which exceptional zero stability is achieved by pressure modulation of the sample gas. This eliminates the need for daily calibration. This stability and the miniature design (2.5" x 4.5" x 4.5"; 4.5 lbs) of the C02/CH4 DETECTORS provide practical instruments suitable for routine safety inspections. This report includes the theory and design of the instruments as well as studies of gas-pressure modulation by a piezoceramic-driven Helmholtz resonator.

This study aims to provide industrial perspectives on the current U.S. metal mining engineering education and areas for improvement. An online survey was designed to seek opinions from the U.S. mining industry. Findings indicated a shortage of qualified graduates from the current U.S. metal mining engineering education system. The qualifications that need to be improved include engineering sciences underlying mining methods, mining design experience, mining feasibility study, the connection between theory and practice, and understanding of the overall mining operation. The survey also identified future desired qualifications, such as the ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed and sufficient field experience. Respondents recommended enhancing collaborations between industry and academia.

Hematite floatability from two low grade banded iron ores of India, namely banded hematite quartzite (BHQ) and banded hematite jasper (BHJ) using fatty acids and amine as the collectors is investigated under identical physico-chemical conditions. The results indicated that hematite present in BHQ ore is easy to float using both the collectors, compared to BHJ ore. The difference of flotability between the two banded iron ores is that quartz grains are coarser and well liberated below 100 micron size in case of BHQ compared to BHJ ore. In case of BHJ ore, fine hematite and quartz grains are intimately inter-grown and are dispersed in thick jasper bands leading to liberation problems. Besides that, dusty jasper particles coat over hematite surface in case of BHJ ore during the process of grinding, which hinders specific adsorption of collector on hematite or quartz surfaces. This is substantiated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The flotation studies have indicated that it is possible to achieve ~64% Fe with ~67% recovery from a BHQ ore using both anionic and cationic collectors from a feed containing around 38% Fe. In contrast, the hematite recovery in BHJ ore was poor. Differences in the ore characteristics that affect the flotability of hematite present in both the ores are compared. Kimberlites and associated diamonds have been the focus of extensive exploration in central Saskatchewan since 1988. During 1989, Uranerz Exploration and Mining Limited identified 71 shallow magnetic anomalies in the Fort a la Corne area from detailed aeromagnetic surveys. By the end of 1991, 18 of these targets had been proven, by drilling, to be kimberlite bodies encased within Cretaceous sedimentary strata. From 1991 to 1997, the number of drill-confirmed kimberlite bodies increased to 69. Our current view, drawing on an integration of geophysical and geological information, is that the kimberlites are composed of individual bodies and multi-vent clusters of coalesced bodies, all apparently constructed of stacked, temporally distinct layers of pyroclastic crater-facies kimberlite. Diamond recoveries and geochemical results from associated heavy minerals at Fort a la Corne remain highly variable, although continued minibulk sampling is expected to improve the estimation of diamond grades for the most prospective bodies.

"INTRODUCTION Oxygen, because of its vital relationship to man's physical well being, is the most important chemical_ element. It may be breathed, however, only in a rather limited range of concentrations and pressures without producing ill effects. An excess of oxygen may be equally as harmful as too little of it. Because of the importance of these effects, the study of the physiological action of oxygen has received attention for many years and by many investigators. Much of the investigative work has been directed toward determining the limits within which oxygen in abnormal concentrations and at abnormal pressures may be breathed with safety in such applica¬tions as deep-sea diving, work in comprossod-air, aviation, the wearing of apparatus designed to permit entrance into irrespirable atmospheres, and in the therapeutic applications of the medical profession.The Bureau of Mines frequently receives requests for information on the effects of breathing essentially pure oxygen, because of the Bureau's association with the use of self-contained oxygen breathing apparatus for entering irrespirable mine atmospheres, and the use of oxygen in conjunction with artificial respiration as a moans of resuscitation. The purpose of this paper is to summarize briefly the effects upon the human body of the inhalation of oxygen in various concentrations and at various pressures and to give reference to other published information that deals in greater detail with the diverse phases of the subject. The literature in this field is voluminous; therefore, a complete bibliography has not boon presented in this paper. No paper on this subject would be complete without reference to the classic pioneering work of Paul Bert (1) 3/ in this field. Articles such as those of Stadia, Riggs, and Haugaard (2), Bean (3), Specht (4), and others cited contain extensive lists of references that will leadthe reader to information in a degree of detail that is not within the scope of this publication."

Noranda has been involved in the development of technologies for automated mining vehicles since 1988, and has contributed in transferring the technological foundation for the suite of SIAM products now being commercialized by STAS. Some of these technologies are now mature and available for commercial implementation in operations where a strong business case can be made for the use of automation. Noranda has successfully implemented or is commissioning the Tele-remote, Auto-loading and truck Guidance technologies at two of its operations, based on operating needs and economic justifications. Operator acceptance, training and maintenance issues have been addressed in order to ensure the reliability and availability of the automation components. These represent the most significant challenges encountered and addressed during the implementation period.

Provide blasting-resistant, quickly reusable stoppings for large mine openings. Approach Stoppings are assembled using roof-to-bottom panels of brattice held together by Velcro seams that peel open when struck by a strong air blast. How It Works The Velcro seam is designed to open when exposed to forces lower than would normally damage the brattice. When the seams partially open, they relieve the blast air overpressure to prevent damage to the brattice panels and their anchoring devices. A stopping is returned to service by reclosing the Velcro seams. To hang a brattice panel, its top is stapled to a board, and wrapped once or twice around it. That assembly is then attached to the roof with bolts. The length of the board should be a foot less than the width of the panel to allow for the sealing seam on each side of the panel. The boards are installed end-to-end in an approximately straight line across the roof of the mine opening.

The recent non-equilibrium electro-phoretic mobility measurements by laser-Doppler electrophoresis coupled with the stability and prevalence of collector colloids in soluble salt flotation systems suggest that the selective flotation of alkali halides is due to the adsorption of oppositely charged collector colloids by hetero-coagulation. Previously reported flotation results confirm this surface charge/collector colloid adsorption model. However, the nature of the inter-particle forces responsible for hetero-coagulation of such oppositely charged particles at high ionic strengths remains to be determined. In this regard, atomic force microscopy was used for inter-particle force measurements at high ionic strengths. Model systems such as polystyrene/quartz and silica/sapphire were studied to measure the particle interaction forces prevalent at high ionic strengths. Results from this study indicate that while repulsive hydration forces exist between similarly charged hydrophilic particles, attractive forces exist between oppositely charged hydrophilic particles in high ionic strength solutions. The repulsive forces between similarly charged hydrophilic surfaces at high ionic strengths (2-4 M) are described by a double exponential function with decay lengths of 0.17 and 1.4 nm depending upon the surfaces involved. On the other hand, attractive forces were observed between oppositely charged hydrophilic surfaces at high ionic strengths (2-4M) and were described by a single exponential function with decay lengths of up to 9 nm depending upon the surfaces involved.

Since the initiation of continuous vacuum filtration over a half a century ago, control of the performance of these units has been largely in the hands of the plant operators, Obviously there has been the introduction of variable speed drives, adjustable speed feed slurry agitation, vacuum control, etc. However, control of , filtration rate, cake moisture content, dissolved solids recovery by cake washing and dryness of solids where thermal drying is practiced is primarily up to the operators judgment and the settings he imposes on the controls he regulates, - filter cycle time, submergence, vacuum level, filter medium condition, wash water- rate, and other such factors. While this may seem to indicate that good operators are a paramount necessity, and certainly always desirable, a considerably more vital factor is a properly designed filter and filter station for the particular application. With improper design, highly skilled operator control will still leave much to be desired in the way of process performance. On the other hand, with correct design and application, the operator can easily and quickly control normal plant surges and quality variations within the flow sheet. Due to the growing complexity and inter dependency between the various processing steps in the modern flow sheet as well as the rising costs of capital investment, labor, maintenance, and losses involved with off quality product or insufficient recovery, automatic or inherent performance control of many of the unit operations within the metallurgical mill must be achieved. Continuous filtration should and can be susceptible to such control. However, as every instrument engineer knows, before control and automation can be achieved, a basic understanding of the operation is mandatory. This is primarily due to three factors. First, as in so many control applications, it may not be possible or feasible to measure the factor that it is desired to control. Thus, secondary variables that influence the major factor are substituted for control purposes. Secondly, it is always desirable to take advantage of any ?self-regulation? within the operation being performed on the equipment. In so doing, not only will automatic control be facilitated, but instrumentation is minimized while experiencing most efficient operation. Finally, automatic control is not a cure-all for improper process and equipment design and application. Hanging instruments on such an operation can be compared to constructing a sizable building on sand, Results will be disappointing.
