Bureau of Mines Information Circular 16, Bibliography of Investment and Operating Costs for Chemical and Petroleum Plants, was published in October 1949 as an aid in making estimates of investment and operating costs of processes for manufacturing synthetic liquid fuels. Development of such processes by the Bureau of Mines was authorized by Public Law 290, 78th Congress. This bibliography included refer¬ences to and abstracts of publications appearing from 1930 to September 1948 on all processes in general use in the petroleum refining and chemical industries. Publications in this field have been numerous since compilation of the above bibliography, and the present report was prepared to cover the field from September 1948 through June 1952.3/

The problem of separating the constituents of a mixed gas has assumed increasing importance to chemical technology during the last several decades. Metallurgical practice, dealing mostly with the application of gases as fuel, such as for the oxidation or reduction of ores, has not often confronted an important need for such separations. If theory occasionally has indicated advantages in the use of purified or separated gases, as for example the "dry" blast for the iron furnace or oxygen-enriched blast for a variety of smelting operations, the economics of the proposals has not often been satisfactory. It has seemed evident that the practice of the chemical plant was too expensive with regard to installation or material costs, or both, for the needs of the basic smelting industries and indeed was applicable commercially to metallurgical purposes only when the metals in question were especially valuable or pure. This bulletin deals with a new mechanical means of attacking the problem of separation. Although it is improbable that any one type of separation could hope to find universal application, the method described is to be regarded as an alternative to conventional means that has attractive possibilities in certain instances. It extends the number of methods previously available by one that has not before been applied commercially and that utilizes a well-known property of gases that never has received effective technologic attention.

The science and technology of roan temperature rechargeable metal hydrides began about 1969 with the discoveries that the intermetallic Compounds LaNi5 and TiFe could be, conveniently hydrided and dehydrided at roan temperature and modest H2 pressures. Subsequently, this lead to the development of a broad family of REE-containing AB5 hydrides and numerous applications that make use of the extraordinary H2-absorption and reaction-heat properties of these materials. Some of the applications include H2 storage, compression and separation, as well as heat pumping, heat to mechanical energy conversion and electric energy storage. This paper briefly reviews the fundamental phenomenology of metal hydrides, the history of the use of REE's in rechargeable metal hydrides, the practical engineering properties of these materials and the applications that have evolved around them. The rechargeable nickel metal hydride battery, a new vial alternative to NiCd cells, stands at the forefront of the applications.

In this report commercial blasting compounds are classified according to their nitroglycerin (or equivalent explosive oil) and ammonium nitrate content as dynamites, gelatins, blasting agents, military explosives, and blasting , accessories. The ingredients and more significant properties of each explosive are tabulated and briefly discussed. Data are summarized from various handbooks, textbooks, and manufacturers' technical data sheets, together with the author's personal experience; however, this report is not intended to be a technical handbook, since it does not deal with blasting techniques. Instead, it seeks to acquaint the reader with the great variety of explosives, available, their advantages and disadvantages, and their general areas of application. Properties discussed are weight strength, cartridge strength, detonation velocity, density, detonation pressure, water resistance, and fume class. The weakness of the strength rating system and the importance of detonation pres- , sure, density, and detonation velocity in rating explosives are discussed. The terms "blasting agent" and "slurry," which are often misused, are defined. Trends indicate that blasting agents (that is, blasting mixtures with none of of the ingredients singly classified as an explosive), particularly high-density slurry blasting agents, will dominate the explosives field in the future.

The number of petroleum refineries in the United States decreased during 1948 from 390 to 375, continuing the trend to fewer units of larger individual capacity that has persisted since the peak in number of plants was recorded on January 1 , 1936. Large - scale construction of new processing facilities continued through 1948 with a resultant gain in daily crude-oil throughput capacity of installed equipment from 6,034,252 barrels on January 1 , 1948 to 6,438,995 barrels on January 1 , 1949. The capacity of the average refinery to process crude oil therefore increased during 1948 from 15,472 barrels daily to 17,171 . The principal areas of expansion of facilities were the strategic seaboard districts of the Texas and Louisiana Gulf Coast and the East Coast , and the important Indiana , Illinois , Kentucky, etc. , district that supplies markets in the upper Middle West region . These four districts accounted for 79 percent of the total new capacity added in the United States in 1948. The relatively small petroleum- refining industry of the Other Rocky Mountain district experienced a vigorous expansion in 1948 that will continue during 1949 . Capacity building on January 1, 1949 , amounting to 341,500 barrels daily, was 25,750 barrels lower than the comparable total on January 1 , 1948, but was the second highest on record . Copper refineries are constantly looking for methods to upgrade their plants to reduce refining costs and to improve the purity of their electrolytic cathodes at the same time that the purity of the anodes they refine is being lowered by the rehabilitation of reverberatory furnace smelters to one of the direct smelting processes. The comments given below are based on the answers to the questionnaire returned bf the 36 copper refineries that represent 66% of the western world s refining capacity. Eleven refineries employ some form of uniform weight anade casting, e.g., Outokumpu, Contilanode, Mitsubishi, Lurgi, or Hazelett. This type of anode casting presents the best possibility for improving cathode purity. The cathode press of Phelps Dadge can improve current efficiencies and cathode quality. The press is used on first-run cathodes, after 48-60 hours, on half-cells at a time without interruption of the cell current. One refinery interrupts current for sever.al hours to allow the anode slime to settle before the, cathode pressing. The cathode press is now used at eight refineries. Apart from periodic reverse current (PRC), it is not expected that current densities will be increased. Thirty refineries, using direct current, average 231 amps/M, with a low of 178 and a high of 350. Five refineries use PRC at an average of 338 amps/M, with a low of 290 and a high of 380. Current efficiencies are good at an average of 94%, with a low of 88% and a high of 99% for the 34 refineries that reported. It must be remembered that the cycle efficiency with PRC is about 93%., so that the effective current efficiency with PRC would be only .94 X .93 or 87% However, PRC should be considered seriously for refinery expansions because it can save about 25% on capital costs.

"The economics of developing gold deposits containing elevated levels of cyanide soluble base metals is often challenged by high cyanide consumption and increased operating costs. SART is a chemical process that enables cyanide consumed by base metals to be recovered and recycled for gold leaching. The process also provides concurrent recovery of the base metal to generate incremental revenue from the sale of high-grade base metal sulphide concentrates. Although SART was developed and successfully piloted by Lakefield Research and Teck Corporation in the late 90’s and is now a public domain technology, the adoption of SART has been relatively slow due to concerns about implementation costs and the reliability of metallurgical performance. Through extensive experience in selective metal sulphide precipitation applied to mining wastewater since 2007, BQE Water has provided process know-how, design along with operations and maintenance experience to a number of projects involving the integration of SART into various metallurgical flowsheets on an industrial scale. This paper presents the commissioning experience and operating data from a SART plant treating up to 500 m3/hr of leach solution at a heap leach operation in Mexico. INTRODUCTION One of the current trends in the gold industry globally is the increasing importance of complex polymetallic gold deposits as discoveries of large Carlin type gold deposits become increasingly rare (Sceresini, 2005). The presence of cyanide soluble copper and zinc in complex gold deposits necessitates changes to the traditional gold extraction metallurgical flowsheet. A tool available to the industry to help manage the interference of cyanide-soluble base metals in gold extraction is the SART (sulphidization-acidification-recycling-thickening) process. SART breaks the weak acid dissociable (WAD) base metal-cyanide complexes, precipitates the metals as high-grade sulphide concentrates and makes the freed cyanide available for recycle."

At the Sinclair Study Site it was found that the deeper the soil the greater the yield of corn, soybeans, wheat, alfalfa, and timothy. Yields at this location were generally lower than those at the Alston Surface Mine. At Alston the non-prime land treatments generally produced greater yields for all crops than did the prime farmland treatments, however, the intermediate soil thickness, 20 cm topsoil over 40 cm of subsoil, gave the best yields, provided it's subsoil had been limed. From a chemical point of view, acidic spoils do not need to be buried by 120 cm or 4 feet of soil, provided adequate lime is applied to these spoils as a barrier prior to placement of good quality topsoil and only forage crops are to be grown. The burial depth must be increased to as much as 75 cm when grain crops such as corn or soybeans are to be grown. This response to burial depth appears to be related to water storage needed by the crop and not due to toxic effects of the spoils. A conventional farm tractor-mounted subsoiler increased yields of soybeans and corn the first one or two years, but the effect was diminished with time. Subsoiling did not produce significant increases for alfalfa or wheat. However, ripping with a bulldozer produced significant yield responses, especially for corn and soybeans, that have lasted for at least three years. The ripping effectively reduced the bulk density at least within the zones through which the ripper had passed. Liming the upper 20 cm of subsoil significantly increased yields of alfalfa, corn, and soybeans. There also appeared to be an interaction between this lime treatment and soil depth. Yields of some grain and forage crops may be high enough to meet target levels for bond release for prime farmland. Based on the present study, one should not expect corn yields to be high enough to meet bond release. This statement should not be considered final since the experiment is not complete.

(Pittsburg Meeting, March, 1910.) AT the Mining Experiment Station of the U. S. Geological Survey, in Pittsburg, an investigation of the process of combustion is being carried on in a specially-designed furnace having an unusually long combustion-chamber. This work is conducted by a committee consisting of H. Kreisinger, mechanical engineer; Dr. J. C. W. Frazer, chemist; and Dr. J. K. Clement, physicist. The problem, essentially one of physical chemistry, is extremely interesting to all who are concerned in the burning of coal or the construction of furnaces. The main object of these experiments is to ascertain the relation between the amount of the volatile combustible driven from the coal and the combustion-spaces necessary to burn it completely. Our best steam-coals vary from 15 to 45 per cent. of fixed combustible. The greater part of the latter is burned on the grate; but the volatile combustible leaves the freshly-charged coal and must be burned in the combustion-space. If this space is not large enough, the volatile combustible will leave the furnace only partly burned, and the result will be a considerable heat-loss and a smoky stack. Strictly speaking, the factor which determines the completeness of combustion of the volatile matter, after it has been mixed with a certain amount of air, is the length of time the mixture is allowed to remain in the combustion-space; but this length of time depends on the extent of the space itself. Let us suppose, for instance, that, when a given coal is burned at a certain standard rate, the volume of the volatile combustible driven off per second is 10 cu. ft. Adding, say, 10 cu. ft. of air, the volume of the resulting burning mixture is increased to 20 cu. ft. If the combustion-space is 20 cu. ft., the burning mixture will stay in it,

In view of the developments and recent interest in recovering heavy oil, this report was prepared to present general information on more than 2,000 heavy oil reservoirs in more than 1,500 fields in 26 states. Information given on each heavy-oil deposit includes the following items: Field and formation, location, average or range of depth, average API gravity of oil, aver- age thickness of formation, areal extent of field, total productive wells drilled in field, discovery date of field, field status in 1963, cumulative production to Jan. 1, 1964, and all known types of secondary-recovery operations initiated (active and terminated) in the reservoirs. The geographical location of heavy oil accumulations in the United States is shown by a map, and a brief discussion of 14 different areas is given in the text. As of Jan. 1, 1964, 75 percent of the heavy oil reservoirs in the United States had produced more than 10 billion barrels of oil and are estimated to contain over 90 billion barrels of oil in place. It is also estimated that if the deposits which have had little or no production history, such as the one in Missouri, were included, the total remaining heavy oil in place would be in excess of 150 billion barrels. To find economical ways of recovering this vast reserve of heavy oil, industry is developing technology in several types of thermal-recovery methods. Some of the general considerations and more suitable limitations in selecting a prospect to study fur thermal-recovery techniques are: Lithology, depth, viscosity of reservoir fluids, gravity of oil, reservoir thickness, oil in place, and permeability and porosity.

IN COMPARISON with recent years 1932 has yielded much less tangible evidence of progress in copper reduction and refining. The industry has been extremely quiet, especially in the United States. Design and construction has been throttled by lack of new capital expenditures. The excess producing capacity of the whole industry and the extremely gloomy outlook for the future have made it unwise to tie up more capital except under special conditions. The plants built during the previous year have, however, been placed in operation. Older plants have been abandoned, temporarily shut down, placed on part time operating basis, or continue to operate at a low percentage of normal capacity. In the United States the Phelps Dodge Corporation at Douglas, Ariz., has completed the remodeling of the former Calumet & Arizona smelter. A new roaster and Cottrell plant chimney was completed this year. Though operations have been limited the new equipment has been found to justify all expectations. The reverberatory plant addition consists of two furnaces 26 by 107 ft. inside dimensions, with a high arch, and modern steel binding of excellent design. Natural gas fuel gives good results. One of these furnaces will treat 1000 tons of solid charge per day with a fuel consumption of approximately 3,000,000 B.t.u. per ton. The larger converters have not only yielded the expected lower costs, but have simplified operations in the converter department. "1.1. WHAT ARE AGREEMENTS AND HOW ARE THEY FORMED?In order to have an agreement, at common law, there must be an offer, acceptance of that offer, and consideration passing between the parties. In addition, the material terms (i.e. the basics or substance) of the agreement must be discernible, preferably by means of documentation. Although these concepts may appear simple and straightforward, the law relating to them is voluminous and complex. Some brief comments are worthwhile.• Offer/acceptance: Both offer and acceptance should be in writing, but they need not be. The actions, conversations, and/or correspondence of the parties may constitute either or both of them. Notwithstanding, the local law or practice of a jurisdiction will impose some specific requirements for certain types of agreements. If these requirements are not met, the agreement may be unenforceable. For example, Ontario’s Mining Act requires transfers of unpatented mining claims to be evidenced in writing and recorded.1• Consideration: Consideration is usually thought of as being money, but it can be virtually anything, even “the premises” (i.e. the mutual covenants or promises contained in the agreement itself). In addition, if one party, relying upon the offer of another, does something to his detriment, then the doing of the act can be considered to be an acceptance of the offer and, under the legal concept of “detrimental reliance”, can also be consideration. Whether or not detrimental reliance exists will depend upon the circumstances of each case.2• Material terms: The requirement that the material terms of an agreement must be discernible does not mean that all of the terms of an agreement must be documented or even have been considered, just the basic or material ones. In addition, it will be up to a judge to decide what is material – not necessarily the parties. In order to establish the material terms, a Court may look at all relevant documentation and may hear oral evidence. It will resist “writing the agreement”"

The recovery of fine hydrophilic gangue in flotation is related to the recovery of water. Water is carried by bubbles as a film and wake into the froth. The amount carried (entrained) depends on bubble size, gas rate and the subject of this paper, frother type. To isolate the effect of frother type from that of bubble size and gas rate, gas holdup is used as the correlating variable. Measurements were made using a bubble column (no solids) operated continuously with the overflow recycled. Continuous operation meant some foam depth was required to ensure only entrained water is recovered. Using an automatically controlled 7cm foam depth the overflow rate of water is used as a measure of 'water carrying rate'. It is shown that the common frothers can be grouped into four families based on the water carrying rate-gas holdup relationship.

To reduce concentrate dewatering and drying costs, the Concentrator Division at Phelps Dodge Morenci, Inc. investigated available filtration technologies. Numerous methods were explored, including: drum, disk, belt, pressure, hyperbaric, and ceramic media filtration. An economic evaluation of the individual filtration technologies indicated the advantages of ceramic media filtration for Morenci concentrates. This paper discusses the technological development culminating in the first full scale application of ceramic media disk filters in North America. Low moisture contents are obtained at high production rates and greatly reduced operating costs.

A simplified, routine method for determining lithium in lithium-bearing rock is presented. The sample is decomposed by repeated treatments with nitric, hydrofluoric, and perchloric acids. Since this procedure does not appreciably dissolve beryl, interference by beryllium (the principal interfering cation) is minimized for most samples. The salts are brought into solution with water and enough citric acid-ammonium citrate buffer is added to make the final volumetric dilution 0.20 M with respect to citrate. The addition of citrate greatly reduces anion interference in the hydrogen-oxygen flame, slightly increases the intensity of the lithium 671 millimicron emission line, and reduces the effect of most of the interfering cations to the extent that analytical separations are not necessary. The accuracy of results of single determinations of lithium in a pegmatite containing spodumene, lithium-bearing mica, and beryl are approximately equal to that obtained by other flame methods, INTRODUCTION This investigation was undertaken in Bureau of Mines laboratories to develop a reliable, rapid, routine analytical method for determining lithium in lithium-bearing minerals. The requirements of the procedure were that the method should be applicable to the analysis of a variety of lithium-bearing ores and test products, and the results would be reasonably accurate for materials containing 0.05 to 8 percent Li20.

Martin County Coal Corporation operates three underground mines and two surface mines on Wolf Creek in Martin County near Inez, Ky. The original underground development was begun in March of 1970. The property being developed is leased from Pocahontas Land Corporation. The A. T. Massey Coal Company, whose offices are located in Richmond, Virginia, is the parent company and sales agent for Martin County Coal. Duke Power Company is the customer who will take all the production from the mines which ultimately are scheduled to produce 2,500,000 tons annually. The Norfolk and Western Railway Company built a 24-mile railroad into this huge reserve of low-sulfur steam coal. Four coal seams, all above drainage, are included in the lease. The Middle Coalburg and Stockton seams are being deep-mined now and it is in three mines that the diesel haulage equipment is used. Those of you who attended the AIME meeting in Birmingham last October or the Diesel Symposium in Pittsburgh in January of this year are familiar with the introduction of trackless diesel-powered haulage equipment into our Martin County mines. I made a presentation at each of those meetings which dealt with our first experience with Wagner Mining Equipment haulage units. These machines are sold exclusively by Lake Shore, Inc. whose offices are in Iron Mountain, Michigan.

The purpose of the present investigation was to learn of recent Swiss developments for the more effective use of coal , which comprises 98.9 percent of the romaining known mineral - fuel reserves of the United States .

The chief object of the Electrical Section of the United States Bureau of Mines is the study of causes and means of preventing accidents resulting from the use of electricity in mines . A large part of this work for the last 20 years has been the inspection and testing of mining equipment under the provisions of schedules which give the minimum requirements considered essential for the safety of equipment intended for use at or near the working faces of dusty or gassy mines . During the first few years of this work , particular attention was paid to the explosionproof features of the various accessories such as motors , controllers , and other parts . The knowledge of the essentials necessary for safe designs of enclosures has since been augmented by field experience and by data obtained in testing a large number and variety of designs . With our present knowledge it would seem that a disproportionate stress was placed on making the various enclosures explosionproof , but not enough thought was given to the danger from wiring and connections outside of explosionproof enclosures . The list of equipment that has met minimum requirements for safety and has been approved as permissible by the Bureau of Mines includes storage - battery locomotives , power trucks , drills , loading machines , conveyors , cutting machines , room hoists , pumps , concrete mixers , and rock-dusting machines . The wiring on some of the machines is comparatively simple and sometimes , except for the trailing cable , may be entirely within the explosionproof enclosures . In general , there is outside wiring between enclosures , and on the larger machines the wiring may be extensive and complicated . In considering the safety of wiring for mining machinery , attention must be given the severe service and unfavorable surroundings imposed by mining conditions . Some of the matters that require consideration are : ground . The lack of care of the exterior wiring to be expected in the average mine . The lack of adequate periodic inspection of the wiring . The absence of adequate facilities for satisfactory inspection and repairs under- The severe conditions of moisture , dirt , mechanical injury , and low voltage encountered in mining service .

"IntroductionTHE PURPOSE of this paper is to describe the results of a preliminary investigation of a method thought to be useful in interpreting geological structures in un-metamorphosed sedimentary rocks. The writer is not aware of the method having been described or investigated previously, although no thorough search of the literature has been made.The method to •be described is based on the assumption that, in argillaceous sedimentary rocks, certain ceramic properties are diagnostic for certain beds within areas of variable limits.Two ceramic properties• have been investigated: pyrometric cone equivalent (P.C.E.), and bloating characteristics of shales. The enquiry has been directed toward testing the usefulness of these properties in determining the following:A -The correlation of shale beds and, by inference, of coal seams, sandstone beds, or other such structures associated with them.B.-The location of contacts between marine and non-marine shales where lithological, palaeontological, or other evidence is lacking.Limitations of time and facilities have prevented a thorough investigation of this problem. The results given in the present paper are preliminary only. It is hoped, however, that they will occasion discussion or even lead to more thorough investigation of the method by individuals or organizations.There are, admittedly, various limitations to the proposed method. It is thought to show some promise when used in conjunction with the well-known and established methods used in stratigraphic correlation and, more particularly, when the conventional methods are not applicable."
