"The inert anode is a key enabling technology for dramatic energy and emissions reduction in extractive metallurgy. In molten salts, the materials challenge is nearly insurmountable: the anode must conduct electrons at high temperature in a pure oxygen and molten salt environment. A solid electrolyte, e.g. zirconia, between the salt and anode removes the molten salt stability constraint, and can act as a container for a liquid metal anode. This can be liquid silver for oxygen-generating inert anodes, or several metals for natural gas-fueled anodes; it is possible to switch between these modes. The solid electrolyte brings several other benefits: it eliminates molten salt contamination of the anode gas, creates a reducing environment enabling low-cost steel vessels, increases current efficiency, and eliminates carbon contamination of the product. New developments presented here, including current collector and low-cost anode designs, amplify these benefits for producing aluminum, magnesium, rare-earths, and other metals.IntroductionReactive metals such as magnesium, aluminum and rare-earths play increasing roles in efficient transportation and clean energy. In response to new fuel economy standards, automotive OEMs are planning large increases in use of aluminum and magnesium to reduce vehicle weight. Rareearth permanent magnet motors and generators exhibit better power-to-weight and efficiency than induction motors and other designs, making this today's primary motor technology for hybrid and electric vehicles, and for wind turbines. Nickel metal hydride (NiMH) batteries with lanthanum are dominant in hybrids. In 2011, transportation comprised 28.6 out of 103.1 EJ of US energy consumption [1] and 1,845 out of 5,471 million metric tonnes (MMT = 109 kg) CO2e of US greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions [1], creating big targets for economy-wide reductions.Unfortunately processes for making reactive metals for these applications are very inefficient and heavily-polluting. In primary aluminum production, Hall-Heroult cell electricity use [2] is more than double the reaction enthalpy due to heat losses through frozen cryolite side-walls and anode gases, graphite anode plants add significant energy use and GHG emissions [2] (see Table 1). Magnesium is even worse: silicothermic reduction by the Pidgeon process in China produces about 85% of the world's magnesium using coal or coke gas [3]. Chloride electrolysis begins with high-purity MgO and requires carbochlorination or hydrochlorination and costly chloride dehydration [4]—rendered unnecessary for aluminum by the Hall-Heroult cell. Production of neodymium and lanthanum with graphite anodes leads to inconsistent carbon content: small cells make 1 kg batches for analysis, sorting and sale by carbon content, with very high labor and analysis costs. And vertical electrodes give no incentive to reduce anode effect: some reports indicate that China's rare-earth metal industry emits more CF4 and C2F6—with global warming potential (GWP) 6500 and 9200 times CO2 respectively—than China's aluminum industry [5]."

The New Hope field was selected for study by; Bureau of lanes engineers because many problems met by, the operators during development and operation were unique to petroleum-engineering experience. Solving these problems is believed to have doubled the ultimate recovery of oil from the field. Since the discovery well was 'completed, in April 1943, an oil-productive area of 4,950 acres- has been delineated by the drilling of 64 wells, four of which were dry holes. Four oil-bearing reservoirs - the Bacon oolitic limestone, and the Hill, Pittsburg) and Elledge sandstones, all, in the Trinity group of the Lower Cretaceous series-- have been penetrated at depths ranging from 7,300 to 8,100 feet. Three of these reservoirs were found to be closed-type or solution gas-drive reservoirs, and one - the Hill - was an open-type or water-drive reservoir. During the course of the study, the Tide Water Associated, Oil Co. and -Seaboard al Co. of Delaware made available to the writers all well records, electric logs; and coring, production,, and pressure data. The ,writers performed Certain field and laboratory- tests on cores of ,the reservoir racks and' samples -of the reservoir Oils. Analyses of cores from the four reservoirs showed average .porosities ranging from 10 to 18 percent, average permeabilities of 17 to 297 millidarcys, and -average 'connate water contents ranging from 25.4 to 30.6 percent. Subsurface and recombined samples of reservoir oils indicated that the oils in the Bacon Hill, and Pittsburg reservoirs contained ,206 to 422 cubic feet of gas in solution per barrel initially, and that the, reservoir oils were undersaturated with gas. No samples' of oil from the Elledge reservoir were analyzed, and because of meager data this reservoir was not studied in detail. 4 The presence of free 'gas' or a' gas cap, however, indicated that the oil in the Elledge reservoir was saturated with gas. The rapid decline in pressures in- the' four reservoirs during the 'first year of operation alarmed the operators and provoked them to investigate the reservoir conditions to determine the cause.

In 2015, after amendments to the explosives regulations, stemming became a mandatory activity for all South African mining operations. There are, however, circumstances in which it is thought stemming has an adverse impact on the blasting outcome. Some of these circumstances include blasting in hot holes, in reactive ground, or when blasting a pre-split. In order to determine when stemming is necessary, its role in the control of adverse blasting phenomena and impact on explosive performance were reviewed. Stemming was found to play a significant role in the fragmentation process and burden movement. Additionally, stemming significantly influences the control of flyrock, air-blast, and toxic fume generation. The review of the literature indicates some motivation for not using stemming for presplit, trim, hot hole, and reactive ground blasting, provided the benefits associated with not stemming the holes outweigh the risks of stemming them. Best practice for stemming from the literature indicates a stemming length of 0.7 × burden is best for larger hole diameters, and 20 to 30 × Ø for smaller hole diameters. Crushed aggregate appears to be the most effective stemming material. The South African explosives regulations pertaining to stemming were found to be consistent with those of Australia and the USA.

This report presents results of an investigation undertaken by the Bureau of Mines to determine the clay content of typical petroleum reservoir sands in Wyoming and the effect of clay content on the permeability behavior of the sands. These results should have significance in determining the feasibility of injecting water into the sands for secondary recovery and in estimating the probable damage incurred by these sands if invaded with filtrates from water-base drilling muds. The results of air-, brine-, and water-permeability determinations are given for reservoir sands in three Wyoming fields. The amounts of materials of "fine silt and clay size" (Wentworth scale) in the sands and the types of clay minerals present, as identified by X-ray diffraction methods, are also presented and discussed.

THOSE of us who have been following rock drilling work for the last 15 or 20 years can recall some of the problems that were encountered with the old piston type of rock drill and the solid steel which it used. There was frequent trouble in keeping a straight hole in badly broken ground when using the ordinary four- point bit that had a flare on the wings of about 14". The drill steel, when pounding down its hole, would follow the line of least resistance and draw away from the desired line when it encountered a weak side in the ground through which it was drilling. Some would overcome the difficulty by making long winged bits to prevent the steel crowding over; this would relieve the troubles to a great extent. There was trouble with the rifling of drill holes and inability to drill round holes in some ground. The cure for these ills was to use the "X" bit, rather than the crossbit. The "2" bits were brought out in an effort to make it easier to drill a round hole in bad ground. Most of these troubles were before the days when the mechanical drill sharpener was in as common use as it is today. It was not until the introduction of the Leyner type of rock drill, requiring hollow steel that the users of rock drills found themselves confronted with more difficult prob- lems than they had ever encountered before with drill steel because the steel had to stand more severe service.

Introduction The Sleeper mine is a near-surface gold mine located in a remote area 56 km (35 air miles) northwest of Winnemucca, NV (Fig. 1). The deposit was discovered in 1984 by an Amax exploration geologist. Favorable drilling results led to feasibility studies and metallurgical testwork. Final evaluation of the mine potential proceeded very quickly. The project received Amax board approval in July 1985. Eight months later, the process plant was fully operational. The first gold ($1 million) was shipped one month later, in March 1986. Total plant capital was $27 million. Payback was achieved in six months. The Sleeper mine was expected to produce 1.6 t (53,000 oz) of gold and 1.3 t (41,000 oz) of silver annually. However, the ore body exceeded all expectations. Production for the first 10 months of operation amounted to 4 t (128,000 oz) of gold and 2.9 t (94,000 oz) of silver. Direct cash operating costs are in the $1.77/g ($55 per oz) range. Amax is actively conducting exploration nearby for additional reserves to extend the mine's life. (See update on page 242.) Geology The Sleeper gold deposit is located on the northwestern flank of the Slumbering Hills and in the Awakening Mining District. Rocks exposed in the vicinity of the deposit are interbedded siltstones, sandstones, and limestones of Triassic age. They are overlain by latite lava flows and tuffs of Tertiary age. Dikes and sills of latite and andesite intrude the sedimentary rocks. Quaternary deposits of mostly sand with minor gravel and clay cover a pediment containing the gold deposit. The sedimentary and volcanic rock units have been transsected and offset by extensive north- northeast trending faults and less abundant northwest trending faults. Both fault systems fractured and prepared the ground for subsequent invasions of mineral-bearing hot spring geothermal waters. The hot spring systems produced widespread hydrothermal alteration and gold mineralization at silicified centers near feeder fault structures. The deposit is hosted by siltstone and latite that have been hydrothermally brecciated. The main breccia is elongated north-northeasterly. The hydrothermal breccia zones appear to dip steeply to the west. Gold mineralization consists of native gold and electrum deposited in two or more high-grade quartz-breccia veins. Tae purpose of this paper is to present types of charts adapted to aid in the graphic solution of fan-performance problems of selection and operation, and to urge the adoption of similar charts by the National Association of Fan Manufacturers as standard forms for presenting fan-performance data. As matters now stand, it is difficult for the average engineer to solve such problems because a laree number of variables are involved, and performance data are not presented in a manner that permits their direct application to many problems encountered in practice. The performance of any centrifugal machine is determined not only by the machine itself but also by the fluid-flow system on which it operates. Actual performance of centrifugal fans is therefore e matter of the type, size, and speed of fan, on the one hand, and of the relation of pressure to quantity of flow, as determined by the physical condition of the airway system, on the other.

Unfortunately, Mr. Meissner has not indicated a single statement or conclusion in my paper that he wishes to controvert; but as there is evidently a difference of opinion between us I will disregard this fact, and will discuss those conclusions of his that seem to me not to be justified by the facts of general practice, or even by the data which he produces to support them. THE essentials of the electrolytic zinc process, as now used in commercial plants, date back to work done by Letrange in 1881. He used sulfuric acid to leach roasted sulfide and ,oxide ores, purified his solution very much as we do now, and electrolyzed the purified zinc sulfate solution. Ten years later Hoepfner developed a process using chloride solutions, and built three plants. One in England operated until 1924 in one of the works now merged in the Imperial Chemical , Industries, Ltd. Ashcroft built a plant in 1898 in the Broken Hill district of Australia. He used both chloride and sulfate solutions.. While his work failed, the aid his published results have been to later workers has made him an outstanding contributor to the de- velopment of the electrolytic zinc process. A good deal of work was done in the following years, aiming to electrolyze zinc chloride solutions and fused zinc chloride. Quite a bit of work on sulfate solutions was also done in the last years before the war. With the outbreak of the war, metal demand and rise in metal prices provided the stimulus which resulted in the remarkably rapid commercial development of electrolytic zinc. In this last period of development, all the work brought to commercial fruition has been with sulfate solutions. The high-density process, or the Tainton process, is used, as you know, in the Sullivan electrolytic zinc plant at Kellogg, Idaho, and will be used in the Evans- Wallower plant now being built at East St. Louis. The low-density process is used by the other plants now operating in the United States and other countries. There are now in operation and under construction four electrolytic zinc plants in the United States, two in Canada, two in Italy and one each in Australia, Rhodesia, Poland, Norway and Germany.

The need for a simple, very sensitive, and accurate method for the determination of benzene in blood and urine vas evident throughout a recent study of chronic benzene (C6H6) poisoning conducted cooperatively by the United States Bureau of Mines, The Barrett Company, and the producers of benzene. A combustion method which will be described in a later publication, and a previously described/ adaptation of Smyth's method were developed and used during that investigation. The adaptation of Smyth's method gave satisfactory results when dealing with exposure conditions that produced chronic poisoning in a comparatively few days, but it was time-consuming; and lacked the accuracy necessary for a study of the absorption, distribution, and fate of benzene in the body during exposure to threshold concentrations of benzene vapor in air. The combustion procedure was satisfactory from the standpoint of sensitivity but was cumbersome, intricate, time-consuming, and required the use of special and somewhat expensive Physical and chemical apparatus. Following the termination of this study of chronic poisoning, possibilities ides for developing better methods occurred, and these have been investigated by the Bureau of Mines with the aid of Relief Works Division personnel microcolorimetric method for the determination of benzene in air has been described recently.6/ The present report deals rich the adaptation of this new colorimetric method to the determination

This information circular describes the application of modern methods and equipment in sinking a vertical, 916-foot-deep by 16-foot-diameter, concrete-lined access shaft for the Harold D. Roberts tunnel near Montezuma, Colo. Although the access shaft was merely a construction facility to expedite completion of a 23-mile water-diversion tunnel, a circular shaft of this type would be equally adaptable for mine development or other purposes. Comparable sinking methods and equipment could be used for similar shafts within a wide range of sizes and depths. SUMMARY In addition to excavation and support of the basic access shaft to tunnel grade, the overall sinking project involved initial preparation of a surface site and plant, subsequent construction of a tunnel-level station and loading pocket at the shaft bottom, and ultimate conversion of the basic shaft into a hoisting and access facility for tunnel operations. The sinking period for the basic shaft approximated one year. Actual tunnel operations through the converted shaft began on April 3, 1958, approximately 19 months after the project was initiated.

Samuel Hopkins, an 18th century inventor from Philadelphia, has been little noted nor long remembered by History, but it was he who on July 31, 1790, obtained what no other man can ever achieve -the first patent issued by the Government of the United States. Signed by President George Washington, the patent guaranteed to Hopkins the protection of the American Government for his "improvement, not known or used before, . . . in the making of Potash . . . by a new Apparatus and Process." The patent itself is no longer important, but it serves as a milestone in the development of an industry that is now rapidly moving to fulfill its role as a mineral to feed the world. Potash ranks as one of the oldest products of Man, having been used as a condiment by the habitants of Gaul a thousand years before Athens achieved its Golden Age of culture. By Hopkins' time, the uses of potash had changed considerably, going primarily into glass-making, tanning, soap, and explosives, yet the same sources and techniques of manufacturing potash used during the earlier 2000 years-that is, leaching of plant ashes in iron pots with water, followed by water evaporation and crystallization of the potassium salts-were still being used.

The history of the drilling of Pilot Hole "XI' is presented. This historical summary provides the details of method used during the drilling of this hole. Problems encountered during drilling are discussed. The quantities of drilling mud and other materials used to drill the hole are documented.

INTRODUCTION This paper describes the use of a shield and compressed air for construction of a short section of a pair of twin single-track tunnels for the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) transit system. Although only two blocks long, this section posed the greatest difficulties to both engineers and contractors, and is the most expensive section of line construction on the MARTA system. All this derives directly from its setting--these tunnels had to be constructed through mixed-face conditions. SETTING The Broad Street tunnels form a link between the Peachtree Center and Five Points Stations, in the heart of Atlanta's central business district (Figure 1). Peachtree Center sits atop a solid rock ridge, which inspired the design of a deep rock-mined station, as described in the 1979 RETC. Five Points Station is MARTA's hub--the intersection of the system's two main branches. It is located in the old railroad gulch, a filled-in erosional valley at the base of Peachtree Ridge, and was constructed by open-cut methods. The alignment and profile of the Broad Street tunnels were closely constrained by these two adjacent anchors, and in the six-block stretch between them there was very little room for maneuvering. Since the rock ridge petered out about in the middle of the section, it was evident at the outset that there would be about two blocks of rock tunneling at the north end, two blocks of soft ground construction at the south, and two blocks of mixed-face in between. It is this central two-block section that is the focus of this paper.

In underground metal/nonmetal mines, repeated localized short-term exposure to high levels of airborne contaminants can become a serious health issue. Currently, there are no common mechanisms to control or mitigate these short-term high exposures to contaminants. To improve miners’ health and safety, the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s Spokane Mining Research Division (SMRD) is developing a smart monitoring and control (SMAC) system for the real-time monitoring of mine air quality, with integrated countermeasures to reduce high concentrations of airborne contaminants in localized sections of mines. To develop and test a SMAC system capable of being implemented in an underground mine, SMRD researchers built a test apparatus incorporating a fan, louver, ducting and sensors combined with atmospheric monitoring and control software. This system will institute effective countermeasures to reduce contaminant levels, improving miner safety and health.

I understand that your association was founded in 1871 with some thirty courageous members, and that so valuable has it been esteemed, and so attractive was it found, that nearly one thousand have now enrolled their names as members and associates. But we must regard your profession as dating back to the stone age and mingling therewith ; how remote that is none of us can tell. Much of civilization is due to the discovery of metals, and the magnitude of our works to their widespread abundance. If you have not accomplished what the alchemists aimed at, which was to turn the ruder materials into gold, you manage, by your subtle skill, to turn stones into gold value. Europe has long since been-dug into and perforated with shafts and galleries in search of metals, and great wealth, and power, and comfort have arisen there-from ; but by an increase of knowledge, and more than European enterprise and energy, America is following rapidly in the race, and by means of natural advantages of a geological character has out-stripped the Old World. "SUMMARYFor making a comparison of magnetic surveys measured from the ground and from the air, Worcester County, Maryland, was chosen as a proving ground. Vertical magnetic intensities were observed on the ground, and total magnetic intensities were observed from the air. A comparison of the two magnetic maps reveals similar large magnetic features, but these are displaced in some instances by distances greater than a mile. Magnetic terrane in the two charts is of the same type but often differs greatly in respective characteristic features.The sacrifices in accuracy that may be expected from the use of different systems of diurnal magnetic corrections on ground observations constitute a part of this report.INTRODUCTIONThe value of magnetic surveys for gaining information concerning the crystalline basement is recognized increasingly. That this topography is often reflected to a major degree in the overlying sediments with certain offsetting is well understood. Even where such sediments are deep, the surface topography of upper formations often reflects this bedrock topography to a certain degree."

This paper 3/gives the results of a reconnaissance of mining districts in Clark County, Nev., made from November 18 to December 22, 1936, and from February 9 to March 8, 1937-in all, 63 days. While the field work Was being done, virtually all of the mining districts in the county were visited and many data on active and inactive properties were obtained. The report covers the locations of the various mining districts, the nature of the deposits, information on past operations, current activity, and general data likely to be useful to operators, investors, and others interested in mining. The geology of the deposits is discussed only briefly. The principal metal-mining districts in the county are Goodsprings, Eldorado, and Searchlight. The zinc-lead ores of Goodsprings have been the most important economically, followed by the gold-silver ores of Eldorado and Searchlight. In the industrial-mineral field, gypsum, limestone, silica sand, and borates are the principal products. Metal mining in the county is characterized by numerous small operations and the ores are either milled locally or shipped to distant smelters.

The mineral processing community have been amongst the pioneer developers and early adopters of key platform technologies in analytical methods, chemistry, physical separation and advanced modelling. Fundamental research will continue to have a significant impact driven by the continued development of sustainable practices. Major drivers and challenges for change in our industry in the next two decades include: reduction in energy uses in processing; discovery of new energy materials; adoption of green chemistry routes; safeguarding of water resources; and demonstration of adherence to best practice at all times. With increasingly global mining enterprises, the provision of internationally accepted benchmarks for performance will continue to drive the creative process. This lecture highlights major opportunities around a new paradigm of Multi-scale Measurement coupled with Multi-scale Modelling, based on advanced sensors, communications and computing. Connecting real-time measurement sensors with dynamic simulation models opens up new horizons for visualising the process behaviour from an experimental and theoretical basis. Examples are given of the potential of this methodology and its implications for better design.
