One phase of the research and development work on synthetic liquid fuels conducted by the Bureau of Mines at Morgantown, W. Va. in cooperation with West Virginia University deals with the purification of synthesis gas.2/ Most of the experimental studies on gas purification have been directed toward the removal of organic sulfur from gas, either catalytically or by adsorption with activated carbon. An important part of the purification program has been the development of suitable analytical methods for determining organic sulfur compounds. As the total sulfur content, organic and inorganic, of purified synthesis gas should not exceed 0.1 grain per 100 cubic feet, the need for accurate analytical methods is apparent. It is also apparent that such methods must be rapid if one wishes to evaluate various processes for removing sulfur from gas. The organic sulfur found in most gas produced from coal is usually present as carbon disulfide, carbon oxysulfide, methyl and ethyl mercaptans, and thiophene, with the exception of thiophene, the remaining organic sulfur compounds respond similarly to catalytic treatment and can be removed effectively. Not only does thiophene resist most catalytic treatment, but it poisons some catalysts, rendering them ineffective in removing the other forms of organic sulfur.

Preconcentration of run-of-mine subgrade and marginal ore by screening has the potential to substantially improve the economics of mining, particularly for large, low-grade orebodies, and to reduce environmental impacts. It has recently been the subject of a major research effort by a joint public-private research body, CRCORE. Yet despite this, there appears to have been only one fully commercial installation, at Bougainville Copper Limited in the late 1980s. Two reasons for the limited application are that not all ores have suitable properties and the economics of all pre-concentration processes on low-grade materials are highly sensitive to the precise balance of mass and value recovery and to the pre-concentration process cost, including materials handling. These factors make it imperative to have good test data on the process response of feedstock across the orebody. Collecting that data presents major challenges, which differ for green and brownfields operations. This paper first discusses the approach to preliminary evaluation developed by CRCORE, which relies on testing of coarse rejects or drill chips available from exploration drilling programs. This method is an efficient first step in evaluating an orebody which is deemed geologically to be potentially amenable to screen upgrading, but it does have limitations and must be followed by larger scale work. A suite of methods have been developed by the authors as a result of test work since the 1990s on several projects, supplemented by published data, which aim to provide statistically robust data at lower cost than large scale bulk sampling tests. For greenfields projects, the upgrade response measured on material crushed to -53 mm has been found to correlate closely with ROM ore, with no scale-up required for material with upgrade responses in the range of commercial interest. Large diameter whole drill core, such as PQ, is expected to be suitable for this method. As drilling such core is costly, the aim should be to establish relationships between upgrade performance and proxy measurements such as multi-element chemical or hyperspectral analyses. This approach was successful at the Gramalote gold project in Colombia. The method is not applicable for ores with thick vein material comparable with the crush size, but such material is not suitable for upgrading by screening and would be eliminated by the preliminary testing. For brownfields projects where blasted material can be sampled, the upgrade response can be accurately measured by sampling only the finer fraction of the ore, selecting a top size which represents 30–50 per cent or more of the ROM size distribution. This is likely to be between 50 and 100 mm. The much finer size compared with the full ROM ore greatly reduces the sample mass required to achieve a given intrinsic sampling error and enables sample preparation to be undertaken with large-scale laboratory equipment rather than mobile crushing plant. The accuracy of the method can be improved by measuring the approximate mass of oversize rejected during sampling. Some ores do show a systematic deviation from the assumed model fit which results in this method slightly underestimating the upgrade response, and it would therefore still be recommended to take one or two full bulk samples to confirm results before a final investment decision.

Our modern cities are almost incapable of sustaining themselves without subsurface infrastructure, which is not identifiable at first glance. This very soon becomes evident when the chaotic conditions prevailing in some cases in the multi-million cities on the African, Asian and South American continents are taken into consideration. This does not simply apply to the hopelessly congested streets in the downtown areas. If anything, it is shown here too that a subsurface infrastructure represents an important prerequisite for public health right up to banishing the danger of disease. Even during the 1990s, this has been clearly underlined through examples of cholera and plague epidemics in parts of Central and South America as well as on the Indian subcontinent. The overriding significance of an inner urban subsurface infrastructure in order to create decent conditions in the major built-up areas was once again emphasised not all that long ago at the United Nations HABITAT-II Conference in Istanbul, Turkey, in June 1996. More than 15 000 delegates from all over the world mulled over and discussed the prerequisites for humane living conditions in human settlements taking the varying climatic, topographical and cultural marginal conditions in different regions of the globe into account. Apart from the built-up areas themselves, the utilisation of underground space is experiencing high and ever increasing significance in less densely populated regions. Attractive and fast transport links between industrial centres call for high- performance transport arteries for the economic, speedy and unhampered carriage of people and goods. Important impulses for the economic power of a region or nation are provided by transport development and links. As a consequence, tunnels for roads and railways are being built or planned to a great degree for crossing mountain ranges, rivers and straits.

Hamersley Iron's pellet plant at Dampier involves ore drying, dry grind- ing in ball mills, disc balling and, indurating by use of the straight grate system. After five years of operation, the plant's output has been increased from the design capacity level of 2 M.T.P.Y. to 2.5 M.T.P.Y. Steps taken in equipment modifica- tion, improvements in process control, and changes in maintenance procedures are described.

"During the year which has passed since the last progress report on reduction of zinc by natural gas,3 the laboratory experiments on this investigation have been completed. In this concluding report, the whole subject will be reviewed and additional data presented.Chemical ReactionsIn a thermodynamic study of zinc smelting, Maier 4 discussed the use of methane for reducing zinc oxide, and predicted equilibria at various temperatures for the sore important reactions. The study has been extended to include the following list.Maier predicted that 870°C. would be the critical temperature above which reaction (1) would take precedence over reaction (2) and that reaction (1) at equilibria would be substantially complete at or above 927°C. A subsequent papers described experimental verification of these predictions and gave data on reaction rates under various conditions.It methane is passed through a heated bed of zinc oxide at a low enough rate reactions (1), (3), and (4) reach an equilibrium which can be expressed by reaction (10). The equilibrium concentrations for the products of this reaction in the temperature range 900° to 1100°C. were calculated by applying the thermodynamic constants to the stoichiometric relations. 6 The results of these calculations are listed in table 1 and shown graphically in figures 1, A and B. These data have major importance, and experimental work has shown that they are subtantially correct."

The demand for nickel is growing and will continue to do so for the foreseeable, future. This will make the construction of new leaching and smelting plants necessary. This paper described a number of possible alternative processes. The first projects with new technology are currently undergoing trials and feasibility studies. Experience from other industrial sectors and from existing plants is being incorporated into these investigations. This article presents an overview of the experimental phase equilibria studies of S-containing systems (Ni-Sn-S, Cu-Sb-S, and Cu-Sn-S) and As-containing systems (Fe-Sb-As and Fe-Sn-As). These systems improve the prediction capabilities of FactSage in a 20-component ‘Cu2O’-PbO-ZnOFeO- Fe2O3-CaO-SiO2-S-(Al2O3-MgO-CrO-Cr2O3-Na2O)-(As, Sn, Sb, Bi, Ag, Au, Ni, Co) system for complex pyrometallurgical operations during both refining and recycling. Experiments involved equilibration at predetermined temperatures (300–1200°C) with or without preheating, followed by rapid quenching in a brine. Quenched samples were then directly measured using an electron probe microanalyser. For the Ni-Sn-S system, liquid phases (NiS- and SnS-rich mattes and liquid metal) and solid phases (Ni1+xSn, SnS, Ni3Sn, FCC-Ni, Ni1-xS, NiS2, Ni3Sn4, SnS2, Sn2S3 and β-Ni3S2) were observed. A new Ni3Sn2S2 phase was found to melt incongruently. For the Cu-Sb-S system, liquid metal, matte, FCC-Cu, digenite, Sb, CuSbS2, Cu3SbS3 and Cu3SbS4 phases were observed. For the Cu-Sn-S system, liquid metal, matte, digenite, SnS and Cu3Sn phases were found at liquidus.

This report contains a description of the distillation laboratory at Bruceton, Pa., which was established to aid in the separation and identification of the products produced in the synthetic liquid fuel processes under study there. Compounds present in synthetic liquid fuels may include aliphatic from C1 to C60 or greater. Alcohols, ketones, esters, aliphatic carboxylic acids, saturated hydrocarbons, olefins, and diolefins are all found in Fischer-Tropsch products. Coal-hydrogenation products contain, in addition to aliphatic compounds, a large proportion of naphthenic material and aromatic compounds ranging from benzene to coronene; in addition, appreciable quantities of tar bases and tar acids are present. In designing the laboratory, therefore, provision had to be wade for the greatest amount of flexibility and versatility. A great deal of standardization of basic equipment had also to be designed to permit interchange of parts and services.

"This paper shows how simple reliability concepts such as mean time between failures and mean repair time can be used efficiently to help increase equipment availability and so reduce the economic losses associated with unreliability.More specifically, the paper shows how these simple concepts can be used in maintaining an appropriate balance between fleet failure and repair rates and how they can be used for setting up priority repair rules f or queuing equipment.IntroductionA profitable mining operation must handle large quantities of ore and waste at the lowest possible cost. To achieve this objective, the operation must optimize the productivity of its fleets of equipment by efficient management of the time element. Figure I shows some basic equipment activities in an open pit operation while Figure 2 shows a tree diagram describing some time elements of these activities.It should be noted that the only time a piece of equipment can generate a profit is when it can be found in the operating status. In order to maximize this time element, the sum of the other time elements must be minimized because the total time is always fixed.This paper shows the application of simple techniques capable of reducing the waiting time for repair (maintenance delay) by using simple reliability concepts."

"The combination of a predictive reliability assessment model and discrete-event simulation can be an effective methodology to study the impact of equipment failures on the capacity of production systems in mines. In our case, a predictive reliability assessment model using genetic algorithms is combined with a discrete-event simulation model to analyze mine equipment systems.Discrete-event simulation involves modelling of real-life systems based on variables and events that occur or change at distinct points in time. The Simul8 simulation software, by Visual Thinking, is used in this research. It is a two-dimensional (2D), discrete-event simulation/ animation software tool for creating realistic depictions of manufacturing and materials handling systems.The simulation model developed for the purpose of this research represents a typical two-level, sub-level stoping section of an underground mine in the Sudbury region in Ontario, Canada. This 2D model was created to assess the impact of equipment failures to a mine’s production throughput. In more detail, using mean time between failures (MTBF) data of scooptrams derived from a reliability assessment model based on genetic algorithms, LHD failures are incorporated into the simulation model. These failures cause production interruptions to the development cycle and consequently loss of hauling capacity.Another purpose of this research work is to demonstrate how low-cost simulation tools such as Simul8 can be successfully applied to model underground hard rock mining operations. The research discussed in this paper is carried out by the Laurentian University Mining Automation Laboratory (LUMAL)."

Brine produced from subsurface formations may be employed successfully instead of fresh water as a flooding, medium in the secondary recovery of oil. The feasibility of this substitution has been proved in the shallow "shoestring" area of eastern Kansas and northeastern Oklahoma, where the supply of fresh water often is limited. In this procedure all brine produced with the oil is returned to the formation and thus is prevented from contaminating streams and fresh-water supplies. This report includes a detailed description of a "flood project" in eastern Kansas studied by the Bureau of Mines. In an attempt to determine whether brine, when handled properly, can be used as effectively as fresh water in flooding oil from partly depleted, formations, an analysis was made of all .own conditions that influence flooding.

"Despite the lip service that has been paid to pro-active plant maintenance processes over recent years, a significant portion of maintenance in industry is still reactive. The business driving force to prevent expensive production opportunity costs arising from “break-down maintenance” is obvious. Various benefits can be derived from successfully deploying remote equipment diagnosis technology and associated business processes.From an end-client’s viewpoint these include the ability to predict and take actions to prevent equipment breakdowns, increasing the lifetime of equipment by responding to appropriate operating instructions and therefore improving the return on capital expenditure. Better planning and scheduling of maintenance priorities and resources with performance measures like an Equipment Health Index are also possible. The knowledge that a qualified supplier engineer is constantly in touch with the operating conditions of their equipment, albeit remotely, is more than a comfort, and can be translated into quantifiable cost savings and improved supplier service levels.This paper analyses the reasons for the inadequate level of pro-active plant maintenance practice in industry today, and presents a number of important criteria in selecting appropriate solutions to this problem. A case study of a specific real-time, remote equipment management application is presented."

This publication contains analyses and related source data for 352 natural gas samples from wells and pipelines in 18 States and 5 foreign countries. All of the samples were obtained and analyzed during calendar year 1974 as a part of Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economics. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4862 and 576.3 The results of the investigation of the occurrences of helium are published annually to make the information available as soon as possible to the gas industry and the public in general. IN June, 1940, a .Longyear 3420 blast-hole drill rig was purchased by the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company for the purpose of experimental blast-hole drilling. The early work showed that the diamond drill could compete successfully with the Leyners then in use and by January 1st, 1941, the diamond drills were placed on contract. They may be considered to have gone into production at that date. Prior to the introduction of the diamond drill, our bench drilling was clone with Ingersoll-Rand S-70 and S-83 Leyner drills. Holes up to 40 feet were drilled, using coupled 1 1/4-inch round steel. Bits with a gauge of 3 inches were used in starting these holes, with a drop of 1/8-inch gauge for each 2-foot run. The holes normally ended with 1 1/2 or 1 5/8-inch gauge, though bits down to 1 1/8 inches were available for holes longer than normal or for holes drilled in abnormally abrasive ground. This method of drilling was very satisfactory and was a distinct improvement on the three-bench method of drilling used previously (1). During 1937 and 1938, when experienced miners were available, Leyner long-hole drilling was carried on with great efficiency. However, in 1939 and 1940, labour turnover in-creased and experienced long-hole drillers became scarcer. This resulted in a marked decline in the efficiency of the drilling operations, with increased costs and less tonnage drilled per shift. EXPERIMENTAL WORK The initial diamond drilling test work was carried on with a Longyear 3420 air-driven blast-hole drill rig, drilling a 1 3/16-inch hole. Tests indicated that diamond drilling could be successfully adapted to local conditions and that overall costs compared favourably with costs obtained with the Leyner long-hole method. Leyner long holes on stope benches usually bottomed at a larger diameter than the 1 3/16 -inch diamond-drill holes. More powder could therefore be introduced into the Leyner holes than could be placed in the diamond-drill holes. To achieve the same fragmentation, additional footage was required when diamond drilling. Diamond-drill holes of larger diameter were indicated.

Over the past three years the UK together with Sweden, Norway, Finland, Italy have been taking part in a EU funded Leonardo da Vinci programme. More recently EFEE have participated in the project known as the EU15/10/200715/10/2007Excert project which is aimed at addressing the perceived loss of explosives expertise in several EU nations. This could have implications for explosives safety and industrial competitiveness. The paper outlines the work that has so far been done in phase 1 and describes the work planned for the second phase of the project. The paper will describe work in the UK to develop competencies for all explosives workers in both the civil and defence sectors. These competencies in the form of National Occupational Standards have now been approved in the UK and are accompanied by a range of 24 new National Vocational Qualifications launched in May 2006. The paper will show how the standards define knowledge and skills and how these form the basis for vocational qualifications as well as higher education awards and professional qualifications. This UK initiative is now being considered in other EU countries and the project has now been extended to also include Germany, France, Portugal, Czech Republic, Lithuania and Estonia. To support the occupational standards and qualifications work is also being carried out to improve learning provision in the explosives area. In addition to formal educational and conventional training courses a series of workplace learning initiatives are being pursued as well as internet learning packages. Examples of these initiatives will be given.
