The Kidd Creek orebody is a massive, base metal deposit with widths up to 600 feet and a strike length of 2,200 feet. The orebody dips eastwards at 70° to 80° and is amenable to sub-level open stoping. Five distinct zones (Fig.1) based on structural wall rocks and ore type parameters occur within the orebody. These zones are: Zone 1 - Mainly copper stringer ore Zone 2 - Massive pyrite ore Zone 3 - Massive sphalerite and chalcopyrite Zones 4 and 5 - Are banded and variable in nature Compressive strengths vary from zone to zone with an average of 22,000 p.s.i. and highs of 40,000 p.s.i. The mine is developed from a ramp extending from surface to the 1600 foot level and a 24 foot diameter, 3050 foot vertical shaft with main levels at 400 foot intervals. Sub-levels at 100 foot vertical intervals are driven from the ramp. transverse and longitudinal pillars to support the crown pillar left under the open pit. The layout allows an opportunity to enlarge or reduce pillar sizes and also to introduce fill on any horizon should conditions warrant. It also offers a large number of operating stopes spread through the various ore zones giving good ore blending characteristics. All ore from the stopes is handled through drawpoints using Wagner ST8 scooptrams with an average one way haul length of 650 feet.

The Bureau of Mines is testing super critical fluids as solvents to selectively extract valuable components from complex matrices. Materials recovered during supercritical fluid extraction are often highly purified. Using laboratory apparatus designed specifically for supercritical fluid research, Bureau re-searchers have measured the solubility of titanium tetrachloride (TiCI4) in supercritical, liquid, and gaseous carbon dioxide (C02), CO2, a commonly used supercritical fluid, is inert, inexpensive, and nontoxic. Supercritical CO2 formed a single phase with TiCl4 at 45° C and 1,500 psig. When the solution was heated at constant pressure beyond 55° C, TiCl4 precipitated from the fluid. Results showed that TiCl4 solubility in supercritical CO2 is not controlled by the vapor pressure of the solute.

The present work is part of an ongoing Bureau of Mines effort to provide a better understanding of the fundamental phenomena involved in sulfide flotation, the role of oxygen in xanthate adsorption being one essential issue. Galena was chosen as the material around which to develop a conceptual model, partly because of its demonstrated oxygen sensitivity and partly because information on its properties and flotation behavior constitutes the largest part of the fundamental information available on sulfides of commercial importance. The model is formulated primarily in terms of surface electronic energy levels produced by oxygen and xanthate and is further developed using existing experimental evidence and its implications. Four major functions of oxygen are elucidated, and the relationship of these to the formation of lead xanthate, dixanthogen, and a surface compound is discussed. Though yet incomplete, the model provides a useful framework within which the results of diverse experiments can be related to one another in their proper perspective, as shown by a brief discussion and resolution of some apparently discordant results reported in the literature.

There are a number of issues associated with freight trains in non-electrified tunnels that are fundamental during the planning and operation of a rail tunnel. During uphill operation, increased air temperatures at the air intake locations of diesel trains can reduce diesel motor efficiency (stalling/choking) and affect HVAC systems. Strong airflows can aggravate fire scenarios due to fanning or water-reactive cargo materials. This paper focuses on the impact of freight trains on tunnel safety concepts, strategies to overcome heat issues at locomotive air inlets and air quality in tunnels operating diesel trains.

WHEN Germany invaded Poland in September, 1939, the only operating helium plant in the United States was that near Amarillo. Texas, supplied with helium-bearing natural gas from the near-by Cliffside gas field. Today the Bureau of Mines has five plants capable of producing more than 25 times the prewar helium output of the Amarillo plant. Two of the plants have received Army-Navy "E" flags for their part in the faraway "Battle of the Atlantic," where heliumfilled Navy blimps chased Adolf Hitler's submarines away from American shores. Meteorologists, watching balloons carried high into the stratosphere by helium, determined weather conditions that influenced the selection of D-day and dates for other military operation. Demand for helium doubled overnight when the Navy decided to expand its lighter-than-air activities; and as the blimp patrol proved effective, the helium demand became ever greater. A tribute to the success of the Bureau of Mines in meeting the demand for helium was paid by the late Secretary of the Navy, Frank Knox, in a letter to the Secretary of the Interior on April 10, 1944. The Fashion Island Boulevard Bridge over the Marina Lagoon in San Mateo, California is an eight span precast, prestressed concrete girder bridge. It is approximately 495 feet in length and 61 feet in width. It is supported on 36" diameter octagonal, hollow precast-prestressed concrete pile columns. The bridge was constructed in 1968 and suffered considerable damage during the Loma Prieta Earthquake in 1989. A damage survey report prepared by the State's Office of Emergency Services (OES) recorded that sixteen of the twenty-one pile-columns sustained heavy to moderate damage from the Loma Prieta Earthquake. The damage consisted of cracking and spalling at the tops of the pile-columns. Spalls at the most heavily damaged columns exposed the prestressing strands and confinement reinforcing which also showed signs of corrosion.

Metal powder compaction offers unique advantages in the manufacture of net-shape components using techniques such as laser sintering, conventional press and sintering, metal injection moulding, direct rolling, direct forging, and hot isostatic pressing. If the output from the primary metal production process is in powder form, then considerable cost and energy savings can be realized by direct conversion to semi-finished or final shapes. This possibility exists for titanium and possibly also for Ta, Zr, Hf, and Nb metals. However, these attractive benefits are associated with some significant risks. The high surface-to-volume ratio of powder particles coupled with the reactive nature of these metals means that special care must be taken when handling them. Powder explosions are unfortunately still a regular occurrence internationally and these often result in serious injury and loss of life. Even seemingly 'safe' compounds such as sugar, flour, and grain can be extremely hazardous when handled or milled and dust clouds are produced. In addition, exposure to airborne particles can have adverse effects on the human body, especially when particles are inhaled on a regular basis. Furthermore, the medical consequences of these are not fully understood, especially in the case of nanoparticles. The impact is often not observed immediately and debilitating illnesses may emerge only years or decades later. As far as is known, there are no South African guidelines for handling of metal powders. This paper attempts to provide an awareness of the risks associated with metal powders (including those produced indirectly by other metalworking/finishing operations) as well as some guidelines for their safe handling, based on international best practices.

Thermodynamic calculations involving the oxides of tungsten and molybdenum have been hampered by lack of accurate entropies and high temperature heat contents. This paper presents work by the Federal Bureau of Mines on new low-temperature heat-capacity data leading to the evaluation of the 298.15° K. entropies of tungsten dioxide and tungsten trioxide, as well as high-temperature heat contents (above 298.15° K.) of molybdenum dioxide, molybdenum tri-oxide, tungsten dioxide, and tungsten trioxide. Included are heats of fusion of the two trioxides. The heats of formation at 298.15° K. of these four oxides are tabulated as measured by Mah4 5/ of this laboratory. Included also are the 298.15° K. entropy of Mo02 measured by Kin 6/ of this laboratory, and that for Mo03 according to Kelley and King.7/ These basic data provide a consistent compilation from which to perform accurate thermodynamic calculations involving these compounds. No previous low-temperature- heat-capacity measurements have been reported for tungsten dioxide. Seltz, Dunkerley, and DeWitt8/ measured the low-temperature heat capacity of tungsten trioxide. The only previously-reported high-temperature heat-content measurements for any of the oxides were conducted by Cosgrove and Snyder,9/ who measured molybdenum trioxide to 1,300° K.

A descoberta das grandes reservas de petróleo e gás ao longo da costa sudeste do Brasil representou um novo desafio tecnológico na história da indústria brasileira de petróleo. Entre as principais dificuldades pode-se citar: água ultra profunda, espesso leito de sal, alta pressão, baixa temperatura, ambiente muito corrosivo contendo contaminantes como o gás carbônico (CO2) e o sulfeto de hidrogênio (H2S). O objetivo deste trabalho é o estudo do comportamento eletroquímico de um aço inoxidável supermartensítico contendo cerca de 14% de cromo (Cr), em meio contendo 115.000 ppm de íons cloreto, 10 ppb de oxigênio dissolvido, com adição de 10-2 mol/L e 10-3 mol/L de tiossulfato de sódio. Para tal foram empregadas as técnicas de polarização anódica potenciodinâmica cíclica e microscopia ótica. Os resultados experimentais mostraram que ocorreu uma variação significativa na extensão da região de passivação quando tiossulfato de sódio foi adicionado ao meio, aumentando a susceptibilidade à corrosão por pites do material.

High pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) technology is growing to be a common comminution tool in iron ore processing. The technology finds a wide acceptance and presents specific benefits in coarse ore grinding and closed-circuit grinding in preparation of ball mill feed, right down to the other end of the particle size spectrum for iron ore pellet feed preparation.A growing number of minerals processing plants are facing higher operating costs and difficulties due to a scarcity of process water, which in some cases is a result of more stringent environmental constraints. In addition, many new iron ore deposits are located in more arid regions of the world. These challenges have led to operators taking a new look at dry processing of iron ores.The use of dry crushing and classification technology in cement production from blast furnace slag, clinker material or limestone feed stocks indicates that the technology may be applied in minerals processing. In addition, dry processing provides the possibility of generating a final product from finely disseminated and inter-grown ores at sizes near or well below 100 µm, as may be required for beneficiation techniques such as in fine magnetic separation, flotation or magnetic flocculation.Dry grinding by HPGR has a number of specific features, challenges and opportunities, including balancing power input, moisture content requirements and classification efficiency in the process design. HPGR parameters and the latest HPGR design and sizing capabilities indicate considerable potential benefits from this dry processing technology.This paper highlights some of the specific issues that play a role in dry HPGR application, with respect to energy and materials balances. The purpose of the experiment was to determine detonation characteristics of various improvised explosives. The test consisted of detonating a pipe filled with an explosive compound inside of a plywood arena. The pipe will be located in the center of the arena to ensure even distribution on the witness panels. Details on pipe dimensions, weights of the pipe and explosive, and the density were recorded prior to testing for use in the model calculations. The same size pipes were used throughout to minimize the variables inherent in testing. The plywood witness panels will capture the fragments so that penetration data was obtained, primarily the surface area of impact and depth of penetration. Through the use of the penetration data in conjunction with a mathematical model the original fragment velocity was determined. The mathematical model was developed to measure lethality of fragments from explosives and was modified to determine the original fragment velocity instead. From this model other variables such as the Gurney velocity were calculated. This test was done with an explosive compound that was commonly found, and numerous improvised compounds. In order to guarantee accurate data all of the explosives used for testing were cap sensitive, to eliminate the need for a booster charge which would introduce many unknown variables. The one common explosive compound that was used was C-4 which has known data in order to show accuracy of the model and calculations. The other 5 compounds chosen will not have this data as they will primarily be improvised mixtures.

his summary of international mineral exploration activities for the year 2011 draws upon available information from industry sources, published literature and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) specialists. The summary provides data on exploration budgets by region and mineral commodity, identifies significant mineral discoveries and areas of mineral exploration, discusses government programs affecting the mineral exploration industry and presents [ ] analyses of exploration activities performed by the mineral industry. Three sources of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review of international exploration: 1) budgetary statistics expressed in U.S. nominal dollars provided by Metals Economics Group (MEG) of Halifax, Nova Scotia; 2) regional and site-specific exploration activities that took place in 2011 as compiled by the USGS and 3) regional events including economic, social and political conditions that affected exploration activities, which were derived from published sources and unpublished discussions with USGS and industry specialists.

The purpose of this investigation was to develop a rapid, accurate method of analysis for small amounts of calcium in wolframite concentrates. This analysis is necessary to determine if the wolframite concentrates meet United States National Stockpile Specification P-57R2, which limits the calcium content to 0.2 percent. Because of the small depth of the sample analyzed in fluorescent X-ray spectrography, the calcium Kaline intensity was a function of the chemical composition of the calcium-bearing particle as well as the total matrix composition. This particle-composition effect was particularly important in this analysis, as the calcium may be present as a carbonate, tungstate, phosphate, etc. Three methods of preparing the sample eliminated the variation of calcium Ka intensity with mineralogical occurrence: (1) Reduction in particle size by extensive grinding, (2) chemical fusion with sodium carbonate, and (3) solution of the calcium by an acid attack.

This paper3/ is one of a limited series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines to supplement a more extensive series on mining and preparation methods in the various mining districts of the United States. It describes ventilation methods and practices at the anthracite collieries in the Northern field of the anthracite measures of Pennsylvania as obtained by personal inspections in twenty of the larger collieries during 1933 and 1934 and from supplementary information furnished then and later by operating officials. This field is one of the four major divisions - Northern, Eastern Middle, Western Middle, and Southern - into which the anthracite deposits of Pennsylvania are naturally divided, and constitutes, in plan, a slightly bowed lens, about 60 miles long, and that extends from Forest City on the north through Scranton, Pittston, Wilkes-Barre, and Nanticoke to Shickshinny on the south with a. maximum width of 6 miles. It is the oldest and largest producing field of the four, and has produced continuously from 1S09. The total anthracite production for the State reached a peak of about 100,000,000 tons a year in 1917, but in recent years production has averaged about 50,000,000 tons, of which somewhat over half comes from this Northern field. The operations of three of the largest producing organizations in the State are almost wholly included in this field, as well as about half of the operations of two others of the six largest producers, It comprises the first 14 of the 25 numerically designated anthracite State inspection districts.

Coal is mined by both surface and underground methods and its extraction is normally characterized by numerous hazards that can lead to catastrophic accidents, which result in devastating effects such as injuries or fatalities, damage to mining assets, and destruction of mineral resources. These hazards exist due to the ability of coal to support combustion and its association with toxic, flammable, and explosive gases. Underground coal mining entails higher safety risks than opencast coal mining, chiefly because of issues relating to mine ventilation and mine collapse. Furthermore, coal mine collapses mostly occur due to crumbling of mining supports, especially in room and pillar mining systems. To avoid such adverse occurrences, safety management systems need to be in place. This study reviews the various technological safety systems and principles that are used for safe-rescue and self-escape of miners in underground coal fires, particularly in South Africa, using data obtained from Mines Rescue Services in Carltonville, South Africa. The outcome of the review shows that practising safety culture has been given priority across many South African underground coal mines through setting up safety management systems and encouraging workers to stay committed to safety principles.

The Bureau of Mines is investigating possible applications of acoustic energy at sonic and ultrasonic frequencies in petroleum production. A phase of this work involves measuring sound velocity through petroleum reservoir rocks. References and abstracts were prepared as a bibliography to make available to others some of the material obtained from a literature search covering the past applications and the present uses of sound. Laboratory and theoretical studies of the various parameters that influence the velocity of sound in porous media account for the wealth of information now available. Velocity of propagation of sound waves in porous sediments as a function of depth is a quantity frequently measured. Velocity logging systems, capable of measuring speed of sound waves in underground formations penetrated by wells, have been developed for interpretative studies. The close relation between acoustic velocity and porosity makes it possible to determine porosity from velocity logs. Most velocity log interpretation in terms of porosity is based on a formula developed by Wyllie and others known as the time-average relation.

"In 2010, the Eurocode for Geotechnical Design, EN-1997-1:2004 (CEN, 2004), informally known as Eurocode 7 or EC7, became the Reference Design Code (RDC) for geotechnical design – including rock engineering design – within the European Union (EU). EC7 is one standard within the comprehensive Structural Eurocode suite, which as a whole has been also adopted by a number of other countries beyond the EU. EC7 is thus becoming a key design standard for geotechnical engineering worldwide.As part of the Structural Eurocode suite, EC7 requires designs to adhere to the principles of Limit State Design. However, it is not clear that current rock engineering design practice can satisfy this requirement. In addition, evidence is accumulating that EC7 is currently difficult to apply to, and may even be inappropriate for, rock engineering design. These issues may be due to the fact that the development of EC7 to date took place without any formal input from the international rock mechanics and rock engineering community.In early 2011 under the auspices of CEN (Comité Européen de Normalisation / European Committee for Standardisation), EC7 entered a formal period of maintenance which was aimed at improving the applicability and ease-of-use of the Code. This maintenance cycle will conclude in 2020 with the publication of a revised version of EC7.This paper describes a number of critical aspects for rock engineering in the context of EC7, inparticular the following:– the history of the Structural Eurocodes and the concepts they embody;– the nature of Limit State Design and the challenges and opportunities it poses for rock engineering design;– the formal means by which the Structural Eurocode maintenance cycle proceeds;– the plans currently being developed for improving EC7 with regard to rock engineering design and construction;– the unique and vital opportunity for the entire international rock mechanics and rock engineering community to comment on the Code and make suggestions for its improvement."

The Babb fault vein in Crittenden and Livingston Counties, Ky. (fig. 1), is one of an extensive series of such veins in the Western Kentucky and Southern Illinois fluorspar district. First operated in 1904, the production to May 1, 1944, was estimated at 143,000 tons of fluorite ore. There are five mines (fig. 2) on the Babb fault zone - Guill ,Kentucky Babb, Delhi-Babb, Eagle-Babb and Howard-Barnes. The Bureau of Mines developed four of these properties by core drilling from July 9, 1943, to May 1, 1944. During that period a total of 8,177.8 feet of diamond drilling was completed in 28 holes.

This report presents a discussion of perforance parameters for electronic or active hearing protectors that will meet the needs of underground coal miners. This information is incorporated into a proposed set of specifications that can be used to judge the suitability of a particular electronic hearing protector for the coal mine application. Acoustic and electrical tests were performed on a developmental model of an electronic hearing protector built by the U. S. Bureau of Mines. This model showed only a slight reduction in speech intelligibility which was traced to poorly matched components and in particular to the transducers. Tests of alternative components showed the Knowles BL-1671 microphone to be suitable for this application because of its performance and extremely small size. The Roan-well H-143/AIC earphone was found to have a good frequency response but has the disadvantage of being rather bulky which causes a slight degradation of a low frequency attenuation of the hearing protector. A satisfactory installation of these components in a hearing protector muff was demonstrated and tested. Results of tests of several methods of controlling the sound level under the hearing protector muff showed that a simple diode clipper circuit can be used with only a negligible loss in speech intelligibility for normal-hearing listeners. A commercially available active hearing protector, the British-built ACOS A-9000/2 was examined. This hearing protector provides sound level limiting through a saturating amplifier. Preliminary tests have shown that the performance characteristics of this commercial unit meet many of the proposed specifications so further testing and evaluation should be performed to determine its suitability for use 1n underground coal mines. The recommended test of intelligibility for electronic hearing protectors and other communication systems as used in a coal mine setting is the Modified Rhyme Test (MRT) developed by House et al. in 1965. The suitability and method of administering this test are discussed.
