"Canopy air curtains on roof bolting machines have been proven to protect miners from respirable dust, preventing their overexposure to dust. Another desired application for canopy air curtains is in the compartments of shuttle cars. The challenges faced in developing the design of canopy air curtains for shuttle cars include mine ventilation rates in tandem with the shuttle car tram speeds. The resulting cab airspeeds may exceed 182 m/min (600 fpm), as found in the present study conducted in a central Appalachian underground coal mine by U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers. Prior research and laboratory testing had indicated that successfully protecting a miner in high air velocities is difficult, because the clean air from the canopy air curtain is unable to penetrate through the high-velocity mine air. In this study, the dust concentrations to which a shuttle car operator was exposed were measured, and air velocities experienced by the operator were measured as well using a recording vane anemometer. The results indicate that the highest exposure to respirable dust, 2.22 mg/m3, occurred when the shuttle car was loading at the continuous miner, where the average airspeed was 48 m/min (157 fpm). While tramming, the operator was exposed to 0.77 mg/m3 of respirable dust with an average airspeed of 62 m/min (203 fpm). This study indicates that a canopy air curtain system can be designed to greatly reduce an operator’s exposure to respirable dust by providing clean air to the operator, as the majority of the operator’s dust exposure occurs in air velocities slower than 61 m/min (200 fpm). IntroductionThe U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) issued contract #200-2015-63485 to develop a canopy air curtain for coal mine shuttle cars with Marshall University and J.H. Fletcher & Co. (Salem, Begley and Ross, 2016). The proposed design maintains a design similar to that of a roof bolter canopy air curtain by providing filtered air through a blower over the operator. The plenum, which will provide uniform airflow over the operator, is anticipated to be built into the shuttle car canopy. One of the main interferences with a canopy air curtain is ventilation airflow perpendicular to the plenum airflow (Engel, Johnson and Raether, 1987). This ventilation airflow can shear the downward flow from the plenum, and this shear can reduce the effectiveness of the canopy air curtain by either disrupting the downward flow or allowing contaminated mine air into the canopy air curtain zone of protection."

A modified cast-on method has been developed to reinforce aluminum castings with steel insert. Defect-free bond between the steel insert and the aluminum casting has been consistently obtained. Data obtained from a push-out experiment indicated that the bond strength was much higher than that obtained using the Al-Fin approach. This paper introduces this modified method in four sections: the coating of the steel pins, the cast-in method, microstructure characterization, and the bond strength. The section on the coating of the steel pins contains coating material selection, electro-plating technique for plating Cu and Ni on steel, and diffusion bonding of the coatings to the steel. The section on cast-in method deals with factors that affecting the quality of the metallurgical bond between the coated steel and the aluminum castings. The results of microstructure characteristics of the bonding are presented in the microstructure characterization section. A push-out experiment and the results obtained using this method is described in the section of bond strength/mechanical property.

Hydrogen-direct-reduction of iron ore in a vertical shaft furnace is a potential process that could significantly reduce CO2 emissions from the steel industry. This approach requires the pelletisation of iron ore fines, which then undergo high temperature induration to strengthen the pellets before they can be fed into the shaft furnace. Here we report on investigations into the disc-pelletisation behaviour of New Zealand titanomagnetite ironsand, and its subsequent induration and hydrogenreduction behaviour. Initial studies focused on the effect on pellet strength of varying ironsand particle size and induration conditions using bentonite and a commercially sourced carboxymethylcellulose binder. Green pellets formed with ironsand of average particle size of 65 μm exhibited optimal strength. The compressive strength of these pellets after induration at 1200°C for 2 hrs in air was measured to be 976 N. Interparticle bonding within the indurated pellets occurs due to a combination of titanohematite recrystallisation (from oxidation of titanomagnetite), and the formation of a liquid bonding phase due to interdiffusion with the bentonite and subsequent melting. Further investigation with various binders showed that a combination of both organic and inorganic binders was essential to achieve optimal pellet strength. Carboxymethyl-cellulose binders provides green strength, whilst inorganic binders such as bentonite promoted high indurated pellet strength. Hydrogen reduction tests in a thermogravimetric furnace showed that all the pellets could achieve a maximum reduction degree of 97 per cent at 1100°C, indicating that the different pellet preparation procedures had no significant effect on reducibility. Pellet recipes developed in this work are now being used to investigate vertical shaft hydrogen-DRI processing of NZ ironsand in a kg-scale laboratory reactor.

Chemical processes using coal often require economical removal of dust from high-temperature gases. Laboratory-scale investigations by the Federal Bureau of Mines have shown that an aluminum silicate fiber is suitable for filtering dust from gases at 1,800° F. The effects of the bulk density of the filter, rate of gas-flow, concentration of dust in the filter, fiber diameter, depth of filter, and concentration of dust in the feed gas on removal efficiency, pressure drop, and capacity of the filter to hold dust were studied. The laboratory filters were difficult to construct because the fibers were longer than the tube diameter. This caused irregular distribution of fiber that permitted dust-laden gases to leak through channels developed in the filter. Leaks also formed between the filter and the tube wall, but this was minimized by improved filter design. However, edge leaks and leaks through channels in the filter probably would be insignificant in properly constructed filters of industrial size. As the concentration of dust in the filter increased, the efficiency of the low-density filters decreased, contrary to expectations, probably because a higher percentage of the dust passed through channels that developed in the filter. The efficiency of high-density filters, however, increased with the concentration of dust in the filter. Results indicate that loosely packed filters would have a longer life than tightly packed filters at the expense of efficiency. As regeneration or replacement of stationary filters is difficult and expensive, loose filters would be best for filtering gases containing much dust. Gases containing little dust may be cleaned with tightly packed filters to obtain higher efficiency. For either type of filter, precleaning with cyclone separators or other means is advisable.

One means of evaluation will be to compare the use of geophysics in petroleum exploration with its possible uses in mining.

Previous studies on blast fumes(CO + NO2) clearance and workplace re-entry time have overlooked the effects of toxic gases entrapped in the muckpile. The currently available models forcalculatingthe mine re-entry times assume that all post-blast fumes are emitted upon detonation. However,recentstudies reportedthat as much as 60% to 70% of the fumes or gases produced during an underground development blasting couldremain entrapped in the adjacent rock mass or in the muckpile. Entrapped fumes are slowly released,and when disturbed, high concentrations are released, representing a possible risk during the digging and transportation of the muckpile. This study uses CFD, SC-Flow software to understandthe behaviorof the entrapped fumes and theireffect on mine re-entry time.

The solid miscibility gap between CaO and "FeO" in the system CaO-"FeO" in contact with metallic iron gradually closes as MnO is added as a third component. On the liquidus surface of the system CaO-"FeO"-MnO, this situation gives rise to a boundary curve which originates in the bounding system CaO-''FeO", proceeds a short distance into the composition triangle of the ternary system, and then vanishes. A new approach has been used to follow the course of this boundary curve. It is shown that the curve vanishes at a much lower temperature and at much lower MnO contents than has been inferred previously. The oxides CaO, "FeO", and MnO together with SiO2 are the major components of the slag phase formed in the basic oxygen process. Hence, the system CaO-"Fe0"-MnO is of considerable technological interest. In addition, the system is theoretically interesting. The three oxides above all have sodium chloride structure. The size differences among the cations are such that in the bounding "binary"* systems CaO-MnO and "FeO"-MnO complete solid-solution series are formed,1,2 whereas in the system CaO-"FeO" there is only limited mutual solubility in the solid state,3 see Fig. 1. Hence, a solid miscibility gap exists in a part of the "ternary"* system Ca0-"Fe0"-Mn0, and a liquidus boundary curve originates at the peritectic point, point a in the insert in Fig. 1, in the system CaO-"FeO", extends a certain distance into the ternary system, and then vanishes. Very little quantitative information on the system Ca0-"Fe0"-Mn0 is available in previous literature. Fischer and Feischer4 sketched isothermal sections at 1600° and 1700°C, and estimated that the vanishing boundary curve extends to approximately 1650°C and a composition of 42 wt pct MnO. The work to be described in the following was aimed at locating experimentally the "vanishing" liquidus boundary curve, determining its end point, and deriving representative isothermal sections below and above the temperature of the end point of this curve. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS The phase relations were determined by the well-known quenching method. (For a description of this method as applied to oxide systems, see the original paper of Shepherd, Rankin, and wright.5) Prereacted oxide mixtures of desired compositions were contained in iron crucibles and heated in a vertical tube furnace in an atmosphere of purified nitrogen. After equilibrium was judged to have been attained, the samples were quenched to room temperature, the phases present were identified by microscopic and X-ray examination, and total iron oxide contents were determined by chemical analysis. "Fisher Certified" reagents (MnCO3, CaCO3, Fe2O3, and Fe) served as starting materials. The calcium carbonate and ferric oxide were heated in air at 400° and 800°C, respectively, for 24 hr prior to use. Manganese oxide was prepared by decomposing the carbonate in a graphite crucible in hydrogen atmosphere at 1000°C. The product was ground under acetone to -100 mesh. The iron powder was used directly without any preparation. Dicalcium ferrite was used as a starting material for some mixtures. The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal, expressed in British thermal units, and the composition as shown by proximate analyses. To these, when required, are added the ash- softening temperature of ash, the free-swelling index, and the hardgrove grind- ability index. Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal, and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instruc- tions issued by the Bureau of Mines; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the con- tractor and, if it is not, a price adjustment is made. Analyses of the delivered coal and tipple samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids. In addition, the continuous sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal. The Government purchased approximately 5-1/4 million tons of coal in fiscal year 1953. In connection with these purchases, the Bureau analyzed 11,435 samples. These are published for the use of Government officials and the public. A series of publications has been completed on coal analyses by States, or, where production is small in any one State, by groups of adjacent States. In addition to analytical data showing composition and quality of coals of the States, the publications con- tain brief descriptions of the geological structure of the coal basins, typical mining conditions in the various districts, the principal economic data of the industry, and the relationship of mine or channel samples to delivered and tipple samples. The present publication covers many States but deals only with the analytical data of the coals. This paper describes one approach in our search for greater stope efficiency and lower costs. The uppers technique with wagon drills in cut-and-fill stopes was commenced, on an experimental basis, in our Sudbury mines in 1961. To date, the method has developed into an accept-ed production operation. This technique minimizes the intermittent aspects of the drilling, blasting, mucking and filling operations associated with other cut-and-fill methods. However, studies show that not all cut-and-fill stopes are suitable for uppers, the governing factors being ore width, dip of the orebody, and ground conditions where large areas of unsupported back remain stable for ex-tended periods of time until rockbolting can be accomplished. Introduction F ALCONBRIDGE Nickel Mines Limited operates seven mines within a radius of 30 miles of the city of Sudbury, Ontario. These mines extend in depth from 1,500 to 6,300 ft. The ore consists of brecciated, massive and disseminated sulphides, and the ore minerals consist primarily of pentlandite, pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite. Widths are generally irregular and vary up to 150 ft. The ore dips at between 35 and 90 degrees.

Hazardous waste has often very complicated chemical compositions in a variety of physical forms and is normally processed in rotary kiln incinerators. Due to large variations in waste types and difficulties in feed characterization, the complex transport processes within the incinerator are not well understood, and the incineration process meets challenges in a smooth operation, and expects various uncertainties in the process chemistry and emission control. For better understanding of the incineration process, simulation was carried out by using Computational Fluid-dynamics (CFD) to characterize temperature and species distribution in the incinerator. In order to catch certain aspects of thermal and chemical behavior, a novel approach is proposed to represent approximately the waste streams and the subsequent combustion process. Hazardous waste in various forms from an industrial-rotary-kiln waste incinerator is firstly converted to a hydrocarbon-based virtual fuel mixture with approximately the same HIC molar ratio and calorific value. The simulation of the combustion process of the simplified hazardous waste was proceeded with a combustion model. The distribution of temperature and chemical species especially the remaining CO in the system is preliminarily investigated. Distribution of CO concentration, as a good indicator of emission level for the incineration process, could be used to evaluate the emission control. The predicted temperature distribution has been compared with available measurement data from an operating rotary kiln waste incinerator at A VR-Chieme, in the Netherlands. Reasonable agreement has been reached between the measured and predicted temperature data. [n the next step, measurement of species distribution in the system is planned to further validate the combustion model.

Purpose of Paper Geophysics is a highly developed science which has found a wide use in industry. Perhaps the most spectacular application has been in the field of oil exploration. It has been estimated that, up to the end of 1939, geophysics was responsible for the discovery of five billion barrels of oil. In 1944, the sum o $40,000,000 was expended for geophysical work in the search for new oil deposits. Although the metal mining industry has so far made comparatively little use of the science, it is becoming increasingly common for the exploration engineer or geologist to be required to co-operate with the geophysicist. Many papers dealing with applied geophysics have been published but in most of them advanced training in physics and mathematics on the part of the reader has been assumed. It is difficult for the average engineer to obtain a ready understanding of the equipment, field procedure, and scope and limitations of the science from the literature. The present paper attempts to describe briefly and in simple terms the principles underlying magnetic, self-potential, and electrical resistivity methods and their application to a field problem. Introduction Geophysics is concerned with the study of gravity, magnetism, natural earth currents, earthquakes, vulcanism, and many other natural phenomena. The methods, originally devised for the measurement, for scientific purposes, of the forces associated with such phenomena have been adapted to the search for buried deposits of economic value. If the body sought has large dimensions and distinctive physical properties, geophysical measurements may reveal associated, and in some cases quite characteristic, anomalous features. However, in many instances the mass cannot be indicated directly but has a common association with geological features which can be defined by physical measurements. Although such surveys cannot specifically identify oil, metalliferous minerals, or other commercially valuable substances, it is possible to delineate anomalous sub-surface physical features which, with the help of geological information, can be assessed as possible or probable indications of the body or structure sought. The nature and extent of the material causing an anomaly, and its economic importance, can only be determined by further exploration, such as drilling.

PT. Krakatau-POSCO coke making plant, located in Cilegon, Indonesia, is the results of the know-how and experience of Paul Wurth (PW) in coke making field. The plant has a capacity of 1,321,000 t/y of gross coke achieved by two coke oven batteries with 42 top charging Paul Wurth “Jumbo” ovens each. PW “Jumbo” oven with a useful volume of 78,92 m3 allows decreasing drastically the number of pushing/charging operation per day with a consequent reduction of the diffuse emissions. Gas treatment plant with a capacity of 88000 Nm3/h has been designed in collaboration with DMT GmbH & Co. KG, adopting the latest technologies with specific design know-how. PT. POSCO-Krakatau plant has been successfully commissioned and started-up in October 2013. The present paper will highlight the main technology features applied in PT. Krakatau-POSCO project for both coke oven and gas treatment plants.

An improved ground support method for development intersections, wide spans and stope brows was implemented at Kanmantoo mine. The method uses a jumbo to simultaneously drill and install self-drilling anchors (SDAs) to depths from 4.5 m to 7.0 m. Resin is subsequently pumped into each SDA using a specially designed integrated tool carrier basket, with plating occurring within 10 mins due to rapid resin cure. This methodology means that SDAs can be installed rapidly due to reduced process steps and wait times with reduced hazards to personnel. Cablebolts are used extensively in underground mines to reinforce the ground in wide spans, such as at intersections and stope brows. The flexible cablebolt tendon allows for a long, continuous and high-capacity reinforcing element to be inserted into the rock. A common cablebolt installation practice at Australian underground mines that do not utilise a mechanised cable bolter, is for cablebolt holes to be drilled by a jumbo or longhole rig, hand installation and grouting by a service crew, then plate tensioning following a grout curing wait time of typically 12 to 24 hours. This process involves multiple separate labour-intensive work processes and results in reduced availability of priority headings. This paper discusses the development history of vertical SDA use in wide spans at Kanmantoo mine. The installation process is fully described, including aspects such as reliable in-hole coupling of SDAs, resin selection and pumping aspects. A cost benefit assessment, and a case for ground stability are presented to compare cablebolt use to SDAs in development intersections.

Thermodynamic properties were determined by the Federal Bureau of Mines for lithium metasilicate (Li2Si03) and lithium disilicate (Li2Si205). Their enthalpies of formation were investigated by hydrofluoric acid solution calorimetry. The standard values are ?Hf°298 -393.8 ± 0.8 kcal/mole for Li2Si03, and ?Hf°298 -611.8 ± 1.0 kcal/mole for LiSi205. Enthalpy increments above 298 K were measured by copper-block drop calorimetry from 298 to 1,404 K for Li2Si03, and from 298 to 1,281 K for Li2Si205. Low-temperature heat capacities were determined adiabatically from 6 to 305 K for Li2Si205 only. The derived standard entropy is S°298 = 29.20 ± 0.10 cal/deg-mole. The various experimental data were combined with other data from the literature, and resulting properties of ?Hf°, ?Gf°, and log Kf were tabulated as a function of temperature.

Duty on Lead Reduced. -On December 28, the President signed H.R. 5047 which reduces the duty on unwrought lead from 3.5% ad valorem to 3% ad valorem, with a floor level of 1.0625 cents per pound, effective retroactively from January 1, 1980, through June 30, 1983. Pacific Northwest Power Bill Passed. -On December 5, the President signed S. 885 which will enable the Bonneville Power Administration to guarantee 20-year contracts to its 15 major industrial customers in exchange for higher rates. In effect, the bill will have industrial customers pay some of the costs of building additional generating facilities in the Northwest, of which thermal units are expected to be a major part. BPA supplies power to six primary aluminum producers which operate eleven plants having over 30% of the primary aluminum capacity in the United States.

"In a previous presentation at the CMP, evidence was shown for the formation of hydrogen sulphide (H2S) in self-heating experiments on pyrrhotite-rich samples (Somot and Finch, 2006). Oxidation of H2S is strongly exothermic leading to the proposition that H2S is playing a key role in the self-heating process. Subsequently, tests in two weathering apparatus (I and II) were run under varying oxygen levels to further examine conditions leading to self-heating. To characterise their resulting self-heating capacity the samples from the weathering tests were subjected to a modified Stage B test using the self-heating apparatus developed by Rosenblum and co-workers (Rosenblum and Spira, 1995; Rosenblum et al., 2001). Results showed highest self-heating after weathering occurs under low oxygen conditions, supporting the H2S hypothesis. It was observed that highest heating rates are not directly related to highest weight gains of samples.INTRODUCTION“Sulphides” refer to several types of minerals containing sulphur in its lowest oxidation state of - 2. Self-heating is the spontaneous heating of a material without external heat input. It is well established that some sulphides will self-heat on exposure to moisture and oxygen (Farnsworth, 1977; Good, 1977; Rosenblum et al., 2001; Wu and Li, 2005). This process is highly exothermic and if the heat generated is not dissipated, combustion may occur when the temperature reaches the ignition point of the sulphide (typically 350-400 °C). The hazards of sulphide self-heating range from handling hot material, to sulphur dioxide release, to fires. The literature documents self-heating incidents underground, on ships and trucks transporting sulphide concentrates, and in mine waste (tailing) disposal areas (Stachulak, 1990; Lukaszewski, 1969; Headley et al., 1977). Lukaszewski (1969), Farnsworth (1977), and Good (1977) note that sulphide minerals can act as fuel to promote underground mine fires. Based on such findings, sulphide minerals could become classified as hazardous materials, making transport of concentrates and storage of mine waste subject to stricter and more costly regulation. The problem is one the industry is keen to avoid."

This paper is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines describing gypsum mining and crushing methods and costs at various operations throughout the United States. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding methods used. The cost tabulations represent local operating expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized that publication of total production costs may in many instances cause embarrassment to individual operators as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to a technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is called specifically to this differentiation so that there may be no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulation. This paper deals specifically with the mining and crushing methods employed by Victor Plaster, Inc., Victor, Ontario County, N. Y. The maximum annual production capacity of this company is 150,000 tons of crushed gypsum. The methods and practices employed arc typical of those followed in the gypsum mines in western New York State. The shaft is, perhaps, the deepest and the thickness of the gypsum mined is above the average for the section.

The innate variability of natural materials and processes causes uncertainty in the models representing the natural phenomena and uncertainty in estimating the parameters that are used in these models. Reliability analyses, in contrast to the traditional factor of safety approach, are well suited to a rational incorporation of uncertainty in design and exploration decisions. Probabilistic kinetic and kinematic analyses were developed and combined to form reliability analysis methods. With one method the reliability, i.e.) the probability of failure, of an individual 2-plane wedge in a slope can be determined. The other method is aimed at slopes with a single slope parallel set of joints. In each case two approaches were developed, an encompassing one relying on computer codes and a simplified or summary approach relying on charts or pocket calculator computation. A major contribution of these approaches is the treatment of joint persistance. Instead of having to assume a certain persistence, it is now possible to use exploration data on joint geometry and to include the persistence effect rigorously.
