Recovery of Fe from red mud has been studied using statistically designed experiments. The effects of three factors, namely: reduction temperature, reduction time and proportion of additive on recovery of Fe have been investigated. Experiments have been carried out using orthogonal central composite design and factorial design methods. A model has been obtained through variance analysis at 92.5% confidence level.

AGGLOMERATION U.S. 4,067,727 - In the sintering of a charge of iron oxide ore, a fuel and a flux on a travelling grate machine, the dust problem is minimized by providing a plurality of cooling zones and by directing heated dust-laden air from a first cooling zone to the sintering zone wherein the dust is filtered from the air by the material being sintered. Air from a further cooling zone can be exhausted directly to the atmosphere. Dust removal in the cooling zone is improved by using a purging zone in which higher pressure air agitates the dust in the sintered material. "QCM's pellet plant, located in Port-Cartier, Quebec, produces up to 8.6 million tons of iron ore pellets annually. Four different types are produced: three for blast furnace operations and one for direct reduction furnaces. The paper presents the scientific approach that led to the installation of new process equipment to improve the reducibility of direct reduction pellets (DR pellet). The findings, the equipment selection and some post start-up modifications are presented.This low silica DR pellet is used in Midrex and HyL shaft furnaces. A good DR pellet has to meet strict chemical, physical and metallurgical specifications. An important metallurgical property is its ability to release oxygen when exposed to reducing gases. Considering that the market for DR pellets is expanding and being aware that reducibility is critical for our clients, a program to improve the latter was undertaken. Test work showed that one factor which has a negative effect on reducibility is the proportion of particles larger than 75 microns. Knowing that the best way to reduce the amount of coarse particles was to close our open grinding circuits, we began evaluating the most suitable classification equipment applicable to our process operations. We settled on hydro-classifiers based on their very sharp cut and their low operating costs. In light of the hydro-classifiers performance it was also decided to replace the hydro-cyclones of an already closed circuit.INTRODUCTIONAt the Québec Cartier Mining pellet plant, continuous improvement programs are aimed at increasing levels of consistency and improved chemical, physical and metallurgical properties. This is being accomplished while still maintaining pellet plant production volumes to satisfy market demands.QCM produces three types of pellets for blast furnace use: acid pellets, designated as ""BHF"", fluxed pellets, designated as ""BAF"", and low silica fluxed pellets, designated as ""BSA"". For direct reduction, a low silica acid pellet or DR pellet, designated as ""BBS"" is produced. This low silica DR pellet is used in Midrex and HyL shaft furnaces.The demand for DR pellets has been increasing during the last few years and is believed to continue so in the future. Wanting to be present in this growing market QCM found that it would be essential to work at improving its DR pellets quality. Efforts have been focused on improvements in three areas: SiO2 reduction, elimination of sticking and increasing reducibility. Improvement programs have begun with laboratory research followed by plant trials and full-scale implementation as a cooperative effort among QCM, COREM, and key customers."

This paper reports two aspects of reactivity of complex Ni-Cu sulphide ores: variations that result from stockpiling of a nickel-copper sulphide ore in the Sudbury area and its consequences on flotation behaviour, especially in terms of metal losses to scavenger tails. In relation to the first aspect, self-heating characteristics of the stockpile were carried out by monitoring the internal temperatures of the stockpile. Six heat sensors were installed with respect to external conditions in local weather during a 7-month period. Stockpile temperatures were mainly influenced by ambient temperature with some retardation effects. The maximum temperature recorded in the stockpile was 44 °C. Samples taken at the beginning and at the end of stockpiling were tested to assess variations in behaviour of the rougher-scavenger flotation. Relative to the fresh ore, nickel and copper losses in flotation of the stockpile fines were 5.0 and 3.6 %, respectively. The fresh ore yields concentrates with higher nickel grades due to differential flotation behaviour of pentlandite and pyrrhotite relative to the stockpile fines, which exhibit a truly bulk flotation behaviour at least during the first 3 stages.

[Fugitive Just is generated alone unpaved mire reads from intermittent equipment traffic. Typically, the majority of such traffic consists of trucks hauling either mine product or waste [rum the surface mime pit and/or the processing plant. Fugitive dust generated along these unpaved mine roads includes particles of all sizes which become airborne. The potential hazards include the deleterious effects to human health of inhaled dust, traffic visibility hazards and environmental impacts on the localized area by the larger-sized visible airborne dust. Two held surveys were recently conducted to quantify fugitive dust generation and dispersion from truck traffic on unpaved and untreated mine haulage roads For these surveys., airborne glow sampling was conducted at multiple sampling fixations away from an unpaved haulage road at a limestone quarry/plant and at a coal mine preparation plant lo measure the size characteristics, concentrations. and dispersive behavior of the dust cloud generated from truck traffic- Results show that at least 80% of the airborne Just generated by haul trucks was larger than 10 µm- Airborne respirable, thoracic, and total dust concentrations all decreased and approached background concentrations 30.5 in (100 feet) from the road This report describes the average and instantaneous peak dust levels that were measured tip to 30.5m (100 feet) Iron the haulage road. The development of advanced high strength steels (AHSS) is motivated by the automotive industry demands for higher strength steels with better formability and stretch-flangeability to avoid fractures during parts forming. In response to this, the new steel grades must have special microstructures in terms of constitution, morphology, distribution and hardness, which are strongly dependent on the chemical composition of the steel sheet and its processing, especially in the continuous annealing stage, in the case of cold rolled sheets. In this study the influence of the annealing heating rate and intercritical temperature (IT) on the microstructural evolution and the final hole expansion ratio of a cold rolled 980 MPa AHSS grade was evaluated. The annealing process was simulated using a Dilatometer and a Gleeble machine, and the microstructures were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) and nanohardness measurements. The increase of heating rate resulted in an overlap between ferrite recrystallization and austenite formation, changing the austenite morphology from a random to a fibrous distribution, while a higher IT resulted in more homogeneous microstructures and higher hole expansion ratios. This microestructural homogeneity, confirmed by nanohardness measurements, suggested that the difference in hardness between ferrite and the second phase affects the micro-void formation and crack propagation during the hole expansion test.

A vertical air shaft in the Birmingham, Ala., iron district was sunk with a circular cross section and lined with concrete at a relatively low cost to provide needed ventilation for an iron-ore mine. The method of sinking the shaft is described, and the costs are stated in mar-hours with a descriptive list of equipment and a statement on the size and use of temporary buildings. Preparation began May 2, 1955, and the shaft was completed at a depth of [680] feet by September 22, 1956. By October 1956, all temporary building and [aft]-sinking equipment had been removed. The total direct-labor cost for the operation, including preparation and dismantling, was 50,700 man-hours, or 30.2 man-hours per foot. Total rock and dirt removed amounted to 17,523 cubic yards (in place), and the shaft lining required 4,635 cubic yards of concrete to form a circular air shaft with an inside diameter of 16 feet.

Calorimetric determinations of low-temperature heat capacities and standard enthalpy of formation were made by the Federal Bureau of Mines for basic aluminum sulfite, A1203?2.0S02?5.3H20. The standard values of entropy (S°), enthalpy of formation (?Hf°), and calculated Gibbs energy of formation (?Gf°) at 298.15 K are 85.2±0.1 cal/deg-mole, -943.1±1.2 kcal/mole, and -820.7±1.2 kcal/mole, respectively.

Diaphragm wall technique is usually used to install diaphragm walls, which are known as underground structural elements commonly used for retention systems and permanent foundation elements as well as deep groundwater barriers, named Cut-Off-Walls (COW). In this exploration project, the diaphragm wall equipment was used in the 2019 summer season to perform the first part of an exploration and bulk sampling program for a potential mine on the Star Kimberlite. Beside the idea of using the diaphragm wall technique as bulk sampling equipment, the sampling program required the adaption of equipment and tools for a depth capability never reached before by a trench cutter in any commercial application worldwide. The paper will explain the development of the sampling program as well as the challenges occurred with the local geology and the specific demands of the exploration and sampling program. It will also provide an overview of the lessons learned during the 2019 season and will give an outlook to the approaches of optimization for the second phase which will be carried out in 2020.

"Niobec mine, a producer of pyrochlore concentrates since 1976, became a producer of ferroniobium in 1994 and achieved accreditation to the ISO 9002 standard in 1995. The goal of ISO 9002 is to ensure that the products supplied to clients regularly meet their specifications, through explicit work standards and procedures throughout the production process, from deposit appraisal to ferroniobium production.A key element of ISO 9002 implementation at Niobec consists of the quality control procedures applied to the raw materials: the ore fed to the mill and the pyrochlore concentrate fed to the reduction plant. These controls extend from exploration, deposit appraisal, mine planning and reserves estimation, mining, mineral processing and, finally, ferroniobium production. The implementation of ISO 9002 has allowed more efficient control of the quality of the final product sold to clients. It requires interactive team work, the role of the geologist being to relate all information pertaining to raw material and product quality to the geological framework of the deposits."

This report, the second of a series, presents the results of laboratory corrosion studies which were made in connection with a one-year test on aluminum lease tanks conducted by the United States Bureau of Mines. Part I of the report contains the results of the field teats.5 The studies were made on an oil lease in a so-called "sour district," near Borger, Tag., where free hydrogen sulphide accompanied the production of oil, gas, and salt water. Steel tanks previously used on the lease had suffered severe corrosion, because steel is inherently susceptible to attack by hydrogen sulphide. Because of the high resistivity of aluminum to the action of hydrogen sulphide, it Was believed that this metal had promising possibilities as a material for the construction of lease tanks in "sour districts." The results of the one-year field teat proved that aluminum lease tanks will withstand corrosion by hydrogen sulphide, but it was found that aluminum was susceptible to attack by salt water, which was invariably present in certain portions of the tanks, and that hydrogen sulphide accelerated this salt-water corrosion in an indirect manner, as will be explained hereinafter. In order to study corrosion conditions encountered in the tanks during the test period, a laboratory was maintained at the site of the aluminum lease tanks.

Main objective of this paper is to present the technological improvements introduced by Paul Wurth in the rebuild of a modern plant focusing on fulfilling all the recent environmental regulations.

The major problems are identified the high phosphorus content and the fine dissemination or encapsulation of mineral impurities, in, ,the iron bearing minerals, A process which combined extreme fine grinding techniques with magnetizing roasting or flotation separation methods, is suggested. By these methods concentrates assaying 60-61 percent Fe exceeding the widely accepted upper limit of 56 percent Fe set for these ores, were produced with 75-90 percent iron recovery. Moreover it was shown that the phosphorus content of these concentrates could be reduced from 0.25 to 0.03 percent phosphorus by acid leaching. A brief discussion on production costs based on current and future developments in iron ore processing is given.

Water-swelling fluormicas and fluormontmorillonoids were synthesized and described. They were found predominantly in the system Mg0 - MgF2 - Si02, with varying amounts of Li+ or Na+, Some water-swelling synthetic minerals were prepared with only strontium or lead in the twelvefold position, Water- swelling compounds containing either K+ or Ba+ were not found. The synthesized water-swelling products were shown by electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and chemical analysis to be typically two-silica-layer, platy compounds, Except for the complete substitution of fluoride for hydroxyl, the compounds were similar to the natural micas or montmorillonites. The stability and properties of the compounds were further established by electrodialysis, by differential thermal analysis, and by anion and cation exchange methods. Fluoride in the interlayer positions was nonexchangeable except through decomposition of the product. Exchanging the sodium or the lithium of the synthetic fluormicas or fluormontmorillonoids with potassium ion, particularly those derived from KOH provided a product from which a completely inorganic paper of extraordinary flexibility was fabricated. This paper had excellent mechanical and electrical properties except for water adsorption and a high power factor. Neither of these problems was solved during this investigation. However, papers with dielectric strength from 1,500 to 5,000 volts per mil were readily fabricated, particularly from the lithium containing fluormicas or fluormontmorill onoids.

Mining is commonly seen as a typical basic industry with rough and even dangerous working conditions, heavy environmental load, and a low level of high-technology and automation with much manual work and operations. A mining operation (open pit or underground) is a very complex one consisting of many manual, physical, mechanical and logistical operations with different human interfaces and decisions. For this reason it is a demanding and potential area for all applications of automation and information technology: controlling difficult non-linear, time varying multivariable processes and machines; solving of ergonomic safety and environmental problems; automation of logistical systems; applying robotics, mechatronics, and information handling, etc. In addition to that, big economic sums are involved with these operations. On the other hand, automation technology has developed towards intelligent and adaptive systems including some from the above mentioned fields of automation. Connecting them with modern information and communication technologies makes the idea of an intelligent and unmanned mine more and more feasible in the near future. This requires intensive co-operation and co-ordination between the mining industry and manufacturers of mining machinery. This has been successfully accomplished in the five-year Intelligent Mine research and development program as well as the three years of subsequent implementation of its results in Finland. The basic elements of an Intelligent MineTM concept are:mine-wide information and data acquisition system; high-speed two-directional mine-wide communication network for real-time monitoring and control; computerised information management, mine planning, control and maintenance systems; automated and tele-operated machinery and equipment which are connected to the information system; and links to the public information networks. The degree of automation of an intelligent mine depends on many technical and economical factors. The basic precondition for such an approach is that it will improve the total economy of the mine. This paper will describe the Intelligent Mine Technology Program with the results. Also the implementation which took place during starting of a new underground mine (Outokumpu Chrome Oy Kemi Mine) will be described.

The viscosity of the molten FeO-Fe2O3-Si0z system in the composition range of interest to copper smelting has been investigated using a rotating cylinder technique. The silica content of the slag was varied from 20 to 35 wt percent while the oxygen pressure of the system was varied from 10-7 10-11 atm. The temperature range investigated was from 1200 to 1350°C. It was found that the viscosity of the slag generally decreased with increasing temperature and increasing oxygen pressure. As the silica content was increased, the viscosity was found to increase.

Like it or not, CPD is upon us. As from 1 January 2006, all registered engineering professionals, i.e. professional engineers, professional engineering technologists, professional certificated engineers and professional engineering technicians, were required to undertake CPD in order to keep their professional registration current. The rules regarding CPD have been gazetted under Government Gazette No. 28328, Board Notice 131 on 23 December 2005, and they also appear on the ECSA website?www.ecsa.co.za. The U.S. Bureau of Mines operated a 2,000-9 (4.4-lb) batch process development unit for recovering platinum-group metals (PGM) from automobile catalysts. Virgin monolith, used pellet and used monolith catalyst samples were tested. Leaching twice with 1-pct sodium cyanide (NaCN) solution at 160' C for 1 h in a pressure vessel dissolved over 95 pct of the PGM from virgin catalysts and over 90 pct from used pellet catalysts. Over 85 pct of the PGM was dissolved from used monolith catalysts when a third leaching step was added. PGM concentrates as metallic powder containing over 99.8 pct of the dissolved PGM and analyzing greater than 70 pct PGM were recovered by heating the pregnant leach solutions from virgin catalysts to 250' C and used catalyst to 275" C for 1 h. The solution after heating contained primarily sodium carbonate from cyanide decomposition and less than 0.2 ppm total cyanide.
