The revolution in equipment for blasthole drilling, ore loading, and ore hauling has been so rapid over the last ten years that it has generated an important new profit potential in the mining industry. With the new high-capacity machinery now available, it is possible for a mining enterprise to earn a profit from larger and lower grade orebodies than ever before despite the ever-increasing burden of rising costs. Just what such equipment can accomplish when coupled with improved mining practice has been demonstrated with startling success at the No. 1 mine of Minerva Oil Co. near Cave-in-Rock in Hardin County, Ill. The No. 1 is an underground operation which has been producing fluorspar and zinc ores and concentrates continuously since 1944. A few years ago, when the mine neared the familiar cross-roads where rising costs, increasing tonnages, and relatively static product prices converge, company officials decided to bolster the operation with new mobile equipment. They chose three machines which proved so effective that output at the No. 1 doubled between 1963 and 1965,while costs dropped by about 40% in the same period.

Sampling tests performed at the Paradise Peak Mine compared various blasthole samplers and reverse circulation sampling methods. Statistical analysis of the data indicates that be-low-the-deck bag sampling produced a 24 to 29 percent error when compared to bulk sampling methods. Use of a chip pile wedge sampler reduced error to 17 percent. Reverse circulation sampling upgraded over bulk blasthole sampling by 7 percent for gold and 11 percent for silver. These results indicate that bias sampling conditions exist when small volume bag sampling is employed in production blasthole drilling.

"Mechanical alloying is an effective way to finely distribute inert dispersoids in AI-TM (TM is a transition metal element) systems. It is considered that high melting point aluminides are formed by precipitation from the supersaturated aluminum matrix. The analysis is based on the fact that much higher content of TM than the solubility limit can be dissolved in alpha aluminum during the high energy ball milling. Nonetheless, the role of undissolved TM particles affecting the formation of aluminides is not suitably considered. In this paper, authors present experimental observation on the formation of Ab3Ti particles from mechanically alloyed AI-Ti alloys in the hyper-peritectic region. This study showed that, in the mechanically alloyed AI-20wt%Ti specimen, intermediate phase of cubic Ab3Ti and tetragonal AIz4Tis formed at 300 - 400°C and 400 - 500°C, respectively, before the MA-state reaches to the global equilibrium at higher temperatures. The formation behavior of Lh- Ab3Ti is interpreted by interdiffusion of Al and Ti in solid state based on the fact that large amount of nano-sized Ti particles exist in the milled powder. Present analysis indicated undissolved Ti particles of nanosize should have played an important role initiating the formation of Ab3Ti phase during annealing.IntroductionInterest in the hyper-peritectic AI-Ti alloys is based on industrial demand for high-modulus and high-temperature aluminum alloys. Earlier works on hyper-peritectic AI-Ti alloys with 4 to 12wt%Ti show that these alloys are strong at ambient temperature and maintain high strength above 300°C when titanium-trialuminide (e.g., Ab3Ti) is finely distributed in the aluminum matrix [1,2]. High melting point and high stiffness with low density of AbTi make the AI-Ti alloys strong with greater thermal stability while keeping weight savings as much as possible. Titanium in aluminum shares other merits of transition metal additions because Ti solubility in Al is low (i.e., 1.l5wt%Ti at 665°C and virtually zero below 400°C), and fine dispersion of Ab3Ti particles is readily accomplished and resists grain coarsening effectively."

THE trying times experienced by the steel industry during the past four years have emphasized the necessity of producing pig iron at the lowest possible cost. The trend in both design and operation of blast furnaces has been toward this end rather than securing maximum production from a unit or group of units. In the following discussion the trend in design of stacks and auxiliary equipment will be taken up before operation is considered. Although few furnaces have been constructed in the past few years, the trend is definitely toward larger furnaces with a hearth diameter of 24 or 25 ft. Such a furnace is very flexible, being able to produce efficiently any desired daily tonnage between 500 and 1000 or more. The detail of the design of furnace stacks, with the exception of the top, has changed little in recent years.

"In traditional Permanent Magnet Machines, such as electric motors and generators, power is transmitted by magnetic flux passing through an air gap, which has a very low magnetic permeability, limiting performance. However, reducing the air gap through traditional means carries risks in manufacturing, with tight tolerances and associated costs, and reliability, with thermal and dynamic effects requiring adequate clearance. Using a magnetically permeable, high thermal conductivity material has the potential to improve magnetic performance, while at the same time offering performance advantages in heat transfer.Ferrofluids can be used to improve permeability in the rotor I stator gap. However, there are several tradeoffs in this approach. Fluid immersion comes with an increase in fluid friction loss compared to the windage losses of a traditional system. Isolating the rotating components from the ferrofluid can offset this effect. Also, while the magnetic effect can be positive for gap permeability, leakage flux can increase, and saturation can limit gains. These effects must be taken into account for a system optimized for ferrofluid immersion.IntroductionPermanent Magnet Machines (PMM's) convert electrical energy to mechanical energy in motor applications, or, for generator applications, convert mechanical energy to electrical energy through means of passing alternately polarized magnets past electrical coils. The following is a description of the methods employed at the Eureka-Asteroid mine, which is situated on the Gogebic range, at Ramsey, Mich. The mime is operated by the Castile Mining Co. under the direction of Oglebay Norton & Co. This paper has been prepared in accordance with an outline furbished by the United States Bureau of Mines, and in one of a series, on mining methods and costs covering the principal minim operations throughout the United States. The claims now held by Mount Wright Iron Mines Co. Limited were acquired by staking in 1956, 1957 and 1958, i.e., some time after the major deposits of the Quebec Cartier Mining and Normanvi!le Mining Co. (formerly Quebec Cobalt & Exploration Ltd.) were already discovered and partly outlined. The choice of the location of the Mount Wright hold-ings was governed simply by the -availability of ground still open to staking and by its proximity to properties held by major iron companies. Mount Wright Iron Mines had no previous knowledge of the geology and no aeromagnetic results were available to it to guide the choice of areas to be staked. In order to explore the newly ac-quired claims it was decided to make a grid of widely spaced magnetic profiles on the ground rather than use aeromagnetics. This afforded the possibility of making some geological observations simultaneously with the geophysical measurements.

"INTRODUCTION Throughout the history of coal washing, the jig has been one of the most important coal-cleaning appliances. In 1935 34.7 percent of the 45,361,021 tons of clean coal produced was the product of jigging. 4/ Previous to 1928, most of the jigs used in the United States were of the piston type, with which sufficient mobility to allow stratification in bed is imparted by the reciprocating up-and-down movement of a piston in the water compartment adjacent to the screen compartment. In 1928, the Baum type of jig was introduces in this country and has since come into wide spread use. In this type, water pulsations are imparted by application and release of compressed air to the water compartment. All prior studies of the mechanism of seperating cleared coal from impurity by piston-type jigs. 5/ The same laws of settling, of course, apply to both types, piston or Baum, but the character of the separation with the Baum type may be modified more easily because of the flexibility with which air may be handled, as distinguished from the fixed action of eccentrics commonly used in piston jigs. Since no detailed studies are available to show the performance, that is, the character of the separation between coal and impurity, of the Baum type the Bureau of Mines undertook the investigation recorded in this report."

"The use of flotation columns has remained a contentious issue among mill operators. There are those who consider them an essential part of any mineral processing operation, while others consider them a necessary evil, which should only be installed if there is no alternative. Lastly, there are those who believe they should not be installed, no matter how great the perceived benefit.This paper provides an analysis of over 4000 installed flotation columns, contained in the Amec Foster Wheeler flotation database. Changing trends in column flotation use by type, commodity and geographical region are discussed. The effect of changing commodity prices and the China ‘phenomenon’ are reviewed. Special reference is made to the changing face of column flotation in Australia.Of note is the fact that after falling to a 20 year low in installed flotation column capacity in 2014, flotation columns during 2015 went through a resurgence in popularity. This resurgence was in direct contradiction to depressed metal prices and was driven by brownfield optimisations to reduce off-site costs, particularly in base metals. THE breaking and handling of ore is obviously the most important consideration when the layout of a new mine is contemplated. The problem must be attacked with due regard to the claim area of the property, the dip of the orebody, the anticipated percentage of payability, the width of the reef, and the amount of dislocation anticipated by dykes, faults, or sills. Among these, as far as East Geduld is concerned, the three most important items are: Area. 2,640.5 claims. Average dip 12° (from flat to 35°) Average channel width 36 inches. We are fortunate on the Witwatersrand in &apos;chat there is usually sufficient information available from surrounding properties to determine, within narrow limits, the factors mentioned above. With this information avail-able, the choice of layout is not limited, and it will be found that on the Witwatersrand each group has developed its own technique to suit its individual requirements. On East Geduld, the layout of the property for handling ore is known as the endless-rope haulage system. Following is a brief description of the general principles followed.

ZIRCONIUM has been produced on a pilot-plant scale for only a few years, but the potential uses have led a large number of research establishments to engage in a thorough study of the metal and its alloys. The work described in this paper is part of a cooperative project between the Bureau of Mines and the Air Materiel Command. The Zr-Cr system was one of the first investigated because of the possibilities of improving the properties at elevated temperatures, the chemical corrosion resistance, and the mechanical properties of zirconium in a manner similar to the enhancement of the properties of titanium by additions of chromium. There is no published work on the Zr-Cr system but from the similarity of the metals involved it was expected that it would be similar to the Zr-Fe&apos; and Ti-Cr&apos; systems. The materials used in this investigation were prepared in the Bureau of Mines laboratory at Albany, Ore. Zirconium was produced by magnesium reduction of zirconium tetrachloride, and a typical analysis is as follows: Fe, 0.06 pct; Ox, 0.08; N?, 0.01; C, 0.02; and other impurities such as Al, Pb, Ni, Ti, and Si less than 0.01 pct each. High purity chromium was prepared by treating crushed electrolytic chromium in a stream of dried and purified hydrogen." The resulting powder contained about 0.01 pct 0 and about 0.1 pct total metallic impurities. All alloys were prepared by arc-melting 50 g briquetted compacts of the desired composition in a Kroll-type" arc furnace using an inert atmosphere. The furnace was evacuated twice and backfilled with helium, which was gettered by melting a center zirconium button immediately before the alloys were melted. Alloys were remelted at least once to insure greater uniformity of composition and subsequently were annealed in vacuum at 1250°C for 48 hr. Fairly homogeneous alloys were obtained by this means; a slight loss of chromium from the surface by evaporation during the high temperature homogenization was noted. All alloys were analyzed for chromium and gave results in good agreement with the nominal composition. Spot checks on tungsten and nitrogen showed pick-up of these elements to be negligible. Over 70 alloys were prepared for use in this investigation; only the critical ones are shown in Table I. Alloys containing up to 10 pct Cr were amenable to hot working at 850°C and a number of these were sheath rolled to 1/16 in. thickness. Specimens were cut from the sheet for use as metallographic samples. For the thermal analysis a differential couple was used in conjunction with an X-Y recorder, the temperature of the specimen and the difference in ternperature between it and the standard nickel body were recorded simultaneously. Heating and cooling rates of 5°C per min were used. The sensitivity of the instrument was such that a difference in temperature between the specimen and standard equivalent to 0.1 mv produced a deflection of 1 in. on the recording chart. The chromel-alumel thermocouples were checked against a Bureau of Standards calibrated thermocouple. Melting-point determinations were made in a high vacuum induction furnace using an optical pyrometer. The pyrometer, calibrated against nickel, copper, and zirconium (iodide process) under near black body conditions, was focused on the base of a hole drilled in cylindrical samples. A North American Philips Geiger counter X-ray spectrometer was used for all diffraction studies. This report presents results of a U.S. Bureau of Mines study of longwall gob material. The objective of this work was to determine material stiffness properties of the gob for use in numerical models of rock mass response to longwall mining, Photographs of actual mine gob were digitized to obtain approximate particle size gradations of gob material. The gradation curve was shifted down to a laboratory scale, and 20 uniaxial compression tests were conducted. Varying the maximum particle size was not found to affect the stress-strain behavior, but changing the gradation appeared to influence the stress-strain behavior. The stress-strain relationship of the simulated gob material was nonlinear, the stress-secant-modulus relationship was approximately linear, and the stress-tangent-modulus relationship was approximately a second-order polynomial function. Equations were generated from these curves, providing numerical modelers with a means to estimate gob moduli based on the stress level. In addition, the experimental data were statistically evaluated using multiple regression analyses, producing a series of equations to predict the secant and tangent moduli from the given stress level, bulking factor, rock strength, and thickness-to-width shape ratio of the particles.

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling was used to evaluate the performance and optimize the design of a potroom ventilation system in an aluminium smelter facility. The ventilation system must ensure the inflow of fresh air to the workplace by natural draft and the removal of heat and hazardous emissions generated from the pot cell process. A full-scale, three dimensional CFD model of the potroom was developed to predict the air temperature distribution and contaminant concentrations throughout the potroom for the purpose of verifying that the industrial workplace hygiene standards will be met by the proposed ventilation system design. The modeling work was used to optimize the size of the floor gratings around the pot cell and roof ventilator, as well as determine damper settings in the roof ventilator. The effects of outside air temperature and external wind on the performance of the ventilation system was evaluated to ensure the design performs adequately in response to seasonal variations in climatological conditions.

Large scale open pit mining and quarrying operations dictate safe and reliable pit wall stability. The current approach of employing the particle velocity-scaled charge distance approach to estimate and minimize damage to residential structures is considered inadequate to protect rock slopes. This study utilizes close-in blasting vibration data as input to an advanced 2D numerical code to study its applicability to serve as a predictive tool in terms of blast-induced rock slope failure. Two tri-axial accelerometer stations, consisting of high-frequency and high-amplitude (20 kHz, 100g) sensors, located within ~100m of the blast, but at two different bench levels, were used to monitor production blasts in a limestone quarry. The production blast consisted of double-decked explosive loads in 125 mm (5 in) diameter holes, with an inter-deck delay of 42 ms, and each deck consisting of 130 kg (285 lb) of emulsion explosive. The blasting vibration data obtained at the two bench levels were critically analyzed, and the vibration results served as input to the numerical model consisting of a single rock block with a 45 degree persistent joint plane but with specified strength properties, significantly different from that of the intact rock. The model was able to characterise progressive accumulation of damage in the form of microcracks along the joint surface as a function of the relatively low vibration load from successive explosive decks. The results showed that such a numerical model can serve as a very good diagnostic and predictive tool, when backed up by careful vibration monitoring and further supported by detailed slope monitoring.

Coal loss is an important issue at many coalmines, with losses of five per cent being common. The type of loss varies from mine to mine but is dependent on mine strata, the drilling and blasting processes applied and the mining method used. Typical coal loss mechanisms from the drill and blast process are coal roof damage and edge loss. Usually a reduction in coal loss is in direct competition with the need to provide material that is well-fragmented and a muck pile that has the required cast percentage. These competing issues were addressed over a two-year period at a mine in the New South Wales Coalfields by implementing a five-step approach. This was centred around building an understanding of the coal loss mechanisms utilising proprietary heave- modelling software, measuring coal losses by comparing survey to drill and/or gamma logs and implementing appropriate coal loss reduction processes. The end result exceeded expectations with a 95 per cent reduction in coal loss. The instrumentation, monitoring, and prediction of a major slope failure at the Chuquicamata mine are described. In December 1967, pre-existing tension cracks on the south end of the east wall of the Chquicamata mine began to open. Various forms of instrumentation were installed for continuous monitoring. These systems included tension crack stakes, crack extensometers, linear extensometers, tape and transit lines, sliding wire contacts, and a seismograph. From the information obtained, the failure date was accurately predicted some five weeks before failure, enabling the mine to reroute truck and rail access; hence, causing a minimal mine shutdown of two and one-half days and preventing any injuries to persons or damage to equipment. The shape and form of the sliding mass are analyzed, as are the possible modes of failure.

(Spokane Meeting, September, 1909.) DURING. the summer of 1905 I was employed by the U. S. Geological Survey to investigate the geology, Mining, and preparation of barite in most. of the fields of the United States. The Eastern districts have been more or less completely described ; the Virginia field in detail by Thomas L. Watson, in his paper, Geology of the Virginia Barite-Deposits,&apos; and other fields in abstract., including statistics of production and references to current literature, by various authors .2 There have also been published a few details of the occurrence of barite in the lead-mines of Washington county, Mo.3 The other accounts of this district are erroneous and meager, and since this field is the most important one in the United States at the present time, a detailed description of the local geology seems doubly desirable. Barite-deposits are scattered over nearly the whole of Washington and adjoining counties, but. the product, is all mined from the areas indicated upon the sketch-map, Fig. 1, and is shipped from the stations of the St. Louis, Iron Mountain &. Southern railway, between Blackwell and Potosi, from 45 to 60 miles SW. of St.. Louis. The topography is for the most part gently rolling, with slightly graded streams, usually less than 200 ft. below the higher hill-tops. The mining industry contributes their coordination of obligation concerning reclamation and recultivation of the already existing individual projects. While designing the landscape components and establishing the infrastructure for the different tasks, the production of gravel and sand is yield as a by product. The result is a long term perspective for region and industry."

Systematic sampling, in reconnaissance fashion, of the continental shelves of the United States to define favorable areas of offshore mineral deposits, is one of the long-range marine mineral; programs of the U.S. Department of the Interior. In mid-1966 the Department of the Interior launched its Heavy Metals Program to stimulate domestic output of gold which is in serious short supply. The program is jointly conducted by the Geological Survey and the Bureau of Mines.
