According to the principle that should be originated from nature, compatible with nature, used in nature and back to nature and based on conception of designing of eco-material, the author combined the ideas of material, environment, zoology and healthy. Properties of natural mineral materials were used to produce micro-aggregate elements by bionic method, so its components and function could accord with living environment. Eco-mineral functional materials which can adjust, purify and optimize the microclimate were reviewed. The authors pointed out the multifunction, com-pounding, the compound characteristics and integration regularities of micro-aggregates. It was the first time in the world to put forward the ?gene? technique or ?material chip? technique of manufacturing function micro-aggregates and eco-function elementary materials. The results of this re-search supported by the national ?863? Hi-tech Project, mainly including the high-efficient air purifying mineral compound material indoor, the clay elementary antibacterial materials, the masonry cement/coating/putty/compound with preventing radon radiation, environmental friendly composite functional coatings, mosquito repellent and healthcare material and zeolite-based energy-saving composite materials, were introduced. Finally, the foreground of mineral materials in the field of future advanced eco-friendly materials was also discussed.

"Top submerged lance furnace developments started in CSIRO in the early 1970s and was given the name Sirosmelt. In the early work the technology was developed for tin smelting and processing tin slags but once a small pilot plant was established other slag processing applications were soon recognised and evaluated for various copper, nickel, zinc and cobalt-containing slags. The process was tried for copper smelting and converting, which was proven in the small pilot plant in 1978. In the same year the first commercial application of the technology was established for the recovery of tin from slags at Associated Tin Smelters, Sydney. Work on lead smelting was initiated by the CSIRO team in the late 1970s and laboratory work led to pilot plant trials by Mount Isa Mines.In the second decade of the technology the focus of development became commercial acceptance of the technology through marketing, development and application by Ausmelt and Mount Isa Mines; the former commercialising and developing the technology for a wide range of applications, while the latter concentrated on its own commercial needs of copper and lead smelting. This decade saw a number of commercial plants built in Australia, with considerable interest becoming evident from other parts of the world. Towards the end of this decade Mount Isa also entered into the business of marketing of the technology through rights dating to the joint work with CSIRO in the late 1970s.So far, after five years, the third decade of the technology has been characterised by diversification of applications of the technology to areas outside the non-ferrous and precious metals production industry. The waste processing and recycle industry and the iron and steel industry have recognised that the top submerged lancing system is a new type of reactor with many significant features which provide new opportunities for processing a range of materials under good environmental controls in a cost effective manner.I hope this audience will excuse my boldness in talking about the third decade of the technology when we are only half way through! I am aiming in this paper to not only talk about the past, but to try illustrate the future directions which I envision."

Process control emerged in the mid-1960s as a new and exciting method of improving the performance of mineral processing operations. The early Australian developments, principally in Broken Hill and Mount Isa, were based on pioneering work in instrumentation, the availability of small digital computers and a particularly effective partnership between companies with technological foresight and University and CSIRO research groups. Initial progress was rapid and within ten years many plants were committed to process control. Process monitoring is now routine and most circuits have some level of control. However, few plants have comprehensive optimising control systems as the difficulty of developing control strategies which can cope with the wide variety of conditions encountered in most mineral plants has been fully appreciated. This paper summarises past experience and assesses the degree of application of different forms of process control in metallurgical plants. Barriers to the effective utilisation of opt rising control are identified and some suggestions for advancing the application of control are made.

Research at the Albany Metallurgy Research Center has shown that high-purity rutile can be produced from relatively low-grade ilmenite obtained from a massive rock deposit. Ilmenite is first smelted in an electric-arc furnace to separate the iron and produce a slag enriched in titanium dioxide. Titania slag mixed with a phosphate flux is then oxidized to synthesize rutile and form a phosphate-glass matrix which contains the impurities. Attrition scrubbing the treated slag in dilute solutions of phosphoric or sulfuric acid liberates the rutile, which is concentrated by physical methods. Tests show that synthesized rutile containing 95 to 97 pct titania responds to chlorination at the same rate as natural rutile.

Danieli complemented its wide range of production plants for the iron and steel industry with a further step upstream into iron ore pelletizing and beneficiation. Danieli has engineered and constructed a state of the art and fully automated pilot plant facility – pot grate and sinter box – at Altos Hornos de Mexico S.A. (AHMSA) Pelletizing Plant, Monclova, Mexico. Installation and commissioning were completed in October 2009. Key features of the pot grate include the avoidance of the need for operator intervention during the test, automatic system preheat, absence of dead time, heat recuperation system with an air/air heat exchanger, oxygen control in preheating and firing with zirconia oxygen analyzer, possibility to test deep beds up to 625 mm. A series of projects have been accomplished by AHMSA availing of the pot grate facility with the aim to enhance pellet plant productivity and to reduce operating costs. The results obtained by use of Danieli pot grate combined with the experience and skill of plant operators has shown significant technical and economical benefits thus fully justifying the initial investment made by AHMSA and confirming the importance of having an in-house testing facility in order to optimize industrial plant operations.

A mathematical model has been developed for intense pneumatic smelting processes, such as the Sirosmelt group of processes, to assist in establishing optimum process conditions and to permit operator training. The model first solicits input operating conditions from disk files and from the operator. During operation, the feed, fuel, and air (or oxygen) rates are automatically adjusted to maintain the desired process targets. Alternatively, these parameters, as with all other inputs, may be manually controlled by the operator. Selected process parameters are displayed to the terminal in a regularly updated diagram of the process,. Outputs of detailed information including heat and mass balances are available for immediate inspection or for use by ancillary plotting packages. Development of a robust free energy minimization routine has led to a flexible and time efficent model capable of handling a range of pyrometallurical systems. Modelling of tin smelting, lead smelting, copper smelting, matte fuming, and pneumatic steel-making has been sucessfully carried out. Typical outputs from the model are given and discussed in terms of their internal consistency and relationship to the operation of the relevant Sirosmelt process. `

Pressure acid leaching of nickel laterite ores typically involves the production of an intermediate product that is releached and refined to pure nickel and cobalt products. BHP Billiton is developing the Ravensthorpe Nickel Project to produce up to 50,000 t/y of nickel via a mixed hydroxide intermediate, which will be refined at its Queensland Nickel (QNI) Yabulu Refinery near Townsville, Queensland. The hydroxide precipitation flowsheet has been adapted to process high magnesium ores through an atmospheric leach stage, eliminate iron(III) as jarosite and oxidise iron(II) during neutralisation. The neutralisation conditions are controlled to precipitate aluminium, chromium and silicon, and to ensure good solid-liquid separation. Soluble impurities such as magnesium are purged with the tailings stream and will be managed over the long term by crystallisation in evaporation ponds.

During the last half century, much time has been devoted to investigations of the effect of nitrogen on the physical properties of steel, but in all discussions of results there is considerable doubt as to the accuracy and interpretation of analyses. No conclusions concerning the effects of nitrogen on the physical properties of steel can be more reliable than the methods used for determining the quantities of nitrogen present. The work described in this paper endeavors to establish some additional conditions required by the customary distillation method for reliable and nccurate determinations. Results by a combustion method of analysis for total nitrogen content are presented; these indicate that all of the nitrogen in steel, exclusive of that contained in blowholes, may be determined by the distillation method. Based on these more sound and more reliable analyses, results havc been obtained that bear on the following divisions of the general subject, nitrogen in steel: Nitrification of steel by melting in nitrogen, nitrification of steel by heating in ammonia, decomposition of nitrified steel by heating, and thermal analysis of nitrified steel. Consideration of Two Methods of Analysis and Some Results The details of the distillation and combustion methods are chemical in character and of little interest to most readers. They are therefore described in an appendix. The distillation method is essentially that described by Hurum and Fay1 and was generally used throughout this work. The quest for efficiency in comminution is an ongoing concern as comminution usually constitutes a major cost component in the metal production industry. Such improvements can be made by circuit optimization or development of more efficient equipment. A novel crusher, known as the rotary offset crusher (ROC), promises to deliver in this space. The ROC was invented in 2002 by Michael Hunt, Henry Simonsen, and Ian Sinclair, but failed to garner enough support to progress to production. The original design concept was recently rekindled, and a laboratory version of the crusher has been built and commissioned at the University of the Witwatersrand. The crusher is simple in design, with two cylindrical discs that are parallel to each other, and, as the name implies, there is an offset between the vertical axes of the discs. The top disc has a conical section on its lower face, and this creates a crushing zone between the opposite faces of the two spinning discs. Centrifugal motion transports particles through the crushing zone. Batch experiments have been conducted with quartz at various crusher settings (discs offset, rotational speed, and vertical exit gap) for various feed size distributions. The indications so far suggest that the disc speed is a key factor affecting the performance. Size reduction ratios as high as 11 were recorded from experiments with quartz at a speed of 830 r/min.

"Geometallurgical variables often cause problems to conventional geostatistical workflows. There are many variables; some are compositional and some are non-additive. They often show: complex multivariate relationships undersampling relative to conventional grade variables unequal sampling; that is, all variables are not available at all data locations.A variety of approaches have been developed over the years, but geostatisticians remain mostly focused on modelling rock types and a few grade variables with an abundance of data. The problems are reviewed and a chained workflow is presented where appropriate techniques are employed in sequence to permit reliable spatial prediction of geometallurgical variables. The spatial models may be used to assess the value of additional data, for prediction of process performance, for improved mine planning and other optimisation tasks. The chained workflow will include data transformations such as ratios and normal scores that make the variables amenable to geostatistical modelling. Data imputation techniques to account for missing values are considered with special consideration to spatial correlation with the available data. Decorrelation techniques such as the principal components, min/max autocorrelation factors and projection pursuit multivariate transformation are employed to manage massively multivariate modelling. Full distribution modelling must be considered to avoid biases in the prediction of non-additive variables. The post-processing of geometallurgical models must be streamlined for robustness and efficiency. The precise workflow varies according to the specific purpose of the study. "Extensive literature surveys, research in the project environment and personal experiences both within and consulting to project teams have revealed some consistent ‘people factors’ that contribute most to ultimate project success. Outside of purely technical and business case issues, there are a small number of leadership characteristics – probably only ten – that if correctly applied can positively leverage a team’s impact on project success.Of the top seven project success characteristics that were consistently highly rated in a recent study, five of them were around leadership. The authors have focused on this topic, noting that good leaders need to display the following traits:passionate commitment to deliveryconsistent modelling and reinforcement of correct values and behaviourfocus on managing relationships well and energising teams and individualscarefully clarifying project vision from front-end loading stages onwardseffective decision making.Not every project manager can and does practise these behaviours all of the time, but being aware of them and receiving training or facilitation in improving their application of these skills can equip project managers with the essential tools to markedly improve their own performance and that of their teams.This paper draws upon experiences in the field and provides lessons – both good and bad – to illustrate. As well as examining leadership traits, the way in which a leader can establish, organise, motivate his or her team and ultimately lead them to success is examined. "Tell us how you got involved in mining?I was first exposed to mining at a young age, as a consequence of my dad and his passion for the industry and rock collecting. Even though he graduated with a degree in mining engineering from Washington State University, my dad spent most of his career working as a structural engineer for the Boeing Company. At the time, Boeing supported a range of employee activities and clubs, including one devoted to mineral prospecting, small-scale dredging and rock hounding. My dad was extremely active in the Prospectors Club, where as a family, we spent a good part of my youth tramping around the Pacific Northwest digging for mineral specimens and panning for gemstones and gold. On my mother’s side of the family, I had relatives that mined in Dawson City and Fairbanks, AK which left a family legacy of sorts. I loved the stories that my dad and a close buddy of his, who was a geologist, would tell about various operations and towns, as well as the wild times at the annual Northwest Mining Association (NWMA) meeting in Spokane, WA. My first recollection of ever being at a commercial operation was during a tour of the Bunker Hill Mine with my dad when I was 7 or 8 years old; this had to have been shortly before the May 1972 fire at Sunshine. That visit of the mine and processing facilities made a permanent impression on me. While I always knew there was something special about the Silver Valley, I began to understand why. To this day, I still get the same feeling when I visit historic mining districts like Leadville, Morenci, Virginia City, Butte, Silverton and Barkerville. During our summer excursions to Helena, MT to dig sapphires, we would usually make visits to Butte and watch mine operations inside the Berkley Pit and surface activities at the Kelly and Mountain Con. In high school, I did well in math and science and began entertaining thoughts of pursuing a degree in engineering. Above all, I wanted to go to a college in the West that had a good academic reputation, where I could also play football. As a 6-ft, 190-lb nose guard, my options for a Division I scholarship were pretty slim, and there weren’t that many technical schools in the Northwest that were Division II that offered athletic scholarships. As fate would have it, I was unexpectedly contacted by Marv Kay, a legendary coach at the Colorado School of Mines (CSM), and was recruited to play ball. Fortunately, I had a couple of high school friends who were already attending CSM, and I had just secured a summer internship with Asamera Minerals in Wenatchee, WA. It was as if all the stars had aligned, and, with the support of my parents, I made the decision to attend Mines. Despite the stress of getting through CSM during a period when the mining industry was in freefall, it was a great decision to attend Mines, and I’m thankful for all the opportunities, friendships, and faculty mentoring I received as a student"

"The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been researching refuge alternatives (RAs) since 2007. Refuge alternatives typically have built-in pressure relief valves (PRVs) to prevent the unit from reaching unsafe pressures. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requires that the PRVs vent the chamber at a maximum pressure of 1.25 kPa (0.18 psi, 5.0 in. H2O), or as specified by the manufacturer. To facilitate PRV testing, an instrumented benchtop test fixture was developed using an off-the-shelf centrifugal blower and ductwork. Relief pressures and flow characteristics were measured for three units: a modified PVC check valve, an off-the-shelf brass/cast iron butterfly check valve, and a commercially available valve that was designed specifically for one manufacturer’s steel pre-fabricated RA and has been adapted for use in built-in-place (BIP) RAs located at one mine. PRVs used in tent style RAs were not investigated. The units were tested with different modifications and configurations in order to check compliance with 30 CFR regulations. BACKGROUND The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (Miner Act) (1) was enacted in the wake of three mine explosions/fires that claimed 19 lives that year. Intended to help improve underground coal mine accident preparedness, the MINER Act includes provisions that target mine safety issues in areas such as emergency response planning, adoption of new technology, training and education, and mine safety standards enforcement. Section 13 of the MINER Act specifically directed the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to provide for research into the effectiveness and viability of refuge alternatives (RAs) for underground coal mines, and the Department of Labor to act on the results of such research as appropriate. These mandates culminated in the 2009 adoption of changes to 30 CFR mining health and safety regulations, requiring underground coal mines to provide mine emergency RAs and associated components, to provide a life-sustaining environment for persons trapped underground. Such RAs can be either self-contained mobile units or built-in-place (BIP) facilities. The regulatory changes also include provisions establishing requirements for the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) approval of RAs and their components, and among these provisions are numerous criteria for providing a safe breathable atmosphere under positive pressure within the RAs. One specific criterion for maintaining a safe RA atmosphere requires the inclusion of an air pressure relief valve that will activate at a maximum of 1.25 kPa (specified as 0.18 psi, or approximately 5.0 in H2O), or at a pressure as specified by the RA manufacturer, above mine atmospheric pressure in the RA (2)."

A combination shaft-electric furnace for the smelting of ores and the melting of metallized feed is being developed at the Mines Branch. When iron oxide pellets are smelted in this unit, they are preheated and partially reduced in the shaft before being transferred to the electric furnace where smelting is completed. Also, limestone flux added with the pellets is-preheated and calcined in the shaft. It has been demonstrated that, in smelting iron oxide in this unit, the throughput of the 250-kva electric furnace can be approximately doubled and the amount of electrical energy required can be very significantly reduced when the shaft furnace is operated in conjunction with the electric furnace. These benefits are achieved mainly by utilizing the sensible heat and latent energy contained in the arc furnace off-gases.

"The laser cladding is an important surface treatment for enhancing resistance against corrosion, abrasion, and wear. The focus of the present study is to develop a three dimensional finite element model to analyze the temperature history and thermal stress evolution during multi-pass laser cladding process on H13-H13 tool steel sample. A sequentially coupled thermal-stress analysis methodology was adopted in this study. The thermal model was firstly established to investigate the temperature history of the laser cladding process. Then the temperature history was used as input to mechanical model to calculate the thermal stress evolution during the process and the residual stress after the sample completely cooled down to room temperature. The influences of process parameters including the scanning speed and scanning strategies on temperature history, thermal stress evolution, and residual stress were investigated in details.IntroductionLaser cladding is an advanced material process technique, which is often used to improve mechanical properties or increase corrosion resistance, repair worn out parts, and fabricate metal matrix composites. In this process, the injected powder or wire feedstock material and a thin layer of substrate are melted and consolidated by use of a laser in order to coat part of a substrate or fabricate a near-net shape part.Numerous mathematical models have been established for analyzing the effects of process parameters, microstructure evolution, and thermo-mechanical behavior of laser cladding. Zhou et al. [1] established an analytical model to investigate the laser induction hybrid rapid cladding for Ni-based WC composite coatings. Huang et al. [2] also developed an analytical model to theoretically investigate the interaction between the laser beam and the powder stream of laser cladding process. A simple and realistic model of laser cladding was proposed by Picasso et al. [3]. The cladding layer is very sensitive to cracks due to the accumulation of residual stress, caused by non-uniform temperature changes, which have limited the wide application of laser cladding technique in industry. Recently, fmite element method has been increasingly used to simulate the laser cladding process [ 4-6]."

Mathematical modelling of the precipitation process requires that the kinetics of crystal growth, nucleation and agglomeration be known: This paper reviews the current state of knowledge on these precipitation sub-processes (ie. growth, nucleation and agglomeration) and describes a number of experimental techniques for estimating their kinetics. The experimental methods used to generate the precipitation data and the data analysis techniques used to extract the kinetics information from the data are discussed separately. There is no universal "best" technique for determining the kinetics. However, studies on multi-crystal systems are more reliable for modelling purposes than are single crystal studies. The selection of a technique will depend on which sub-processes are present. A problem with all kinetics studies is that there is generally a large uncertainty in the estimated kinetic parameters. This stems from the scatter in the experimental data being further propagated by the mathematical techniques used to extract the kinetic parameters.

Cement kiln dust (CKD) produced in the contiguous United States and Hawaii was characterized as part of the Bureau of Mines' program in minerals environmental technology. The mineralogical and chemical composition was determined for 113 CKD samples from 102 plants that normally send CKD waste to landfill. Characterization included the determination of 28 elements, 7 anion species, carbon dioxide, noncarbonate carbon, and chemically bound water. Mercury was determined in 15 samples. Interelement correlation coefficients were determined for 23 elements, 5 anions, CO2, noncarbonate carbon, and chemically bound water. To assess the hazardous waste potential of CKD, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Extraction Procedure (EP) toxicity test was performed on all 113 CKD samples. All but one sample were in compliance with the test; the noncomplying sample slightly exceeded the EP toxicity test criterion for lead.

A comparação de processos de soldagem é uma tarefa complexa por envolver diversos atributos. A designação dos pesos dos atributos a serem avaliados é uma etapa fundamental na análise de problemas multicritérios; contudo, por vezes, a única informação que se obtém é a ordem de prioridade. O objetivo deste trabalho foi calcular os pesos das propriedades destinadas à comparação de processos de soldagem em aço inoxidável AISI 316L para o reparo de eixo naval com base na ordenação fornecida pelo tomador de decisão. Os atributos considerados foram taxa de deposição, energia de soldagem, rendimento econômico, diluição e relação reforço-largura. Os métodos de atribuição de pesos aplicados foram o de ponderação igual (Equal Weights), ordenação recíproca (Rank Reciprocal), somatória (Rank Sum), ordenação exponente (Rank Exponent) e o método do centroide (Rank Order Centroid). Para se verificar o efeito da escolha dos pesos estimados numa avaliação multicritério, avaliaram-se dados reais, aplicando-se a Ponderação Aditiva Simples (Simple Additive Weighting). Os resultados indicaram que diferentes atribuições de pesos podem alterar a posição das alternativas. Foi sugerido que a elaboração tabela ou gráficos com as distribuições de pesos pode ser útil para que o tomador decisão identifique a que melhor reflete as suas preferências.

"PID loops – also known as base layers or regulatory controls – form the foundation of any plant’s control layer and it is generally accepted that PID loop health has a direct impact on the plant’s bottom line. Keeping these thousands of control loops in good health has a direct impact on the plant’s bottom line: it reduces variability, improves quality and throughput, and decreases energy costs and raw material usage. This has been well proven and documented in many articles. In the last ten years, technology has evolved: control engineers can now keep track of control loop performance and link it to the root causes of variability. However, they lack industry-wide best practices and criteria for determining what can be considered as excellent, good, fair, or poor performance. To ensure that PID control loops continue to perform well and meet their objectives, control engineers need a combination of (a) an appropriate monitoring technology and (b) best practices for doing the maintenance of base layer controls.Most plants have limited resources and operate with an increasing number of constraints; therefore, using the right tools and including reports in daily workflow is key for success. This paper suggests roles and responsibilities of key players needed to work toward control performance best practices and discuss organisational changes to succeed.INTRODUCTIONAlthough PID controllers are reliable workhorses in the process industry, they are often underrated. Since the 1980’s, computer control has evolved and the control algorithms used by control engineers have become increasingly complex.
