Under a very high vacuum of 10-8 torr the transfer of terrestrial mineral beneficiation methods to the vacuum ambient of extraterrestrial locations such as the lunar surface was investigated. In the size range for the electro-static and magnetic separation of ores (minus 35 plus 150 mesh) there is no adhesion of particles produced by crushing and grinding due to the limited contact area, and for repeated contacts area size has a frequency of occurrence in accordance to the normal law. The photoelectric effect which is successful in separating a few minerals in an air ambient has a wider application in a vacuum, while the lack of air viscosity and sound transmission provides for high feed velocities and the adaptation of particle vibration to dispersion and grinding. Contact electrification is reversible upon return to atmosphere.

The paper reviews the tapping process and the major wear mechanisms on the tap-hole, including wear from tapping tools. Measured temperatures in different tap-holes are related to choice of binder and material for repair pastes. The strength and disadvantage of carbon and silicon carbide materials are compared. Normal daily and weekly maintenance of tapholes is described, together with the major repairs that are done during longer furnace shutdowns. The objective is to show that the type of repair and repair material needs to be adapted to each individual furnace.

With the depletion of rich manganese ores, high-Fe content manganese ores are becoming the mainstream resources for manganese extraction. Reduction roasting-magnetic separation process is reported as a relatively effective route to realize the separation of manganese and iron. This study investigated the phase transformation of MnO2 and Fe2O3 briquettes (molar ratio 1:1) roasted under various temperatures and CO–CO2 atmospheres. Results showed that when the CO content was in the range of 0–10 vol%, MnxFe3−xO4 (x = 0−1) phase was formed and its content increased with the rising of temperature. The formation of ferromagnetic MnxFe3−xO4 with strong magnetism resulted in an inferior separation of manganese and iron by magnetization roasting-magnetic separation process. With the increase of CO content to over 25 vol%, the MnxFe3−xO4 content decreased while the content of feebly magnetic substance (MnO)y(FeO)1−y(y = 0−1) increased. Further increasing the CO content to over 80 vol%, (MnO)y(FeO)1−y was reduced to MnO and metallic iron.

Driven by the necessity to improve blast performance regarding fragment size distribution in limestone mines, this paper introduces the prediction and measurement of blast fragmentation distribution through the modified Kuz-Ram (MKR) and Kuznetsov-Cunningham-Ouchterlony (KCO) models. Precise prediction and measurement of rock fragmentation resulting from blasting play a critical role in hard rock ore extraction. This is due to the substantial influence of post-blast ore size distribution on the efficiency of all subsequent downstream rock handling and processing operations. Additionally, employing secondary breakage of boulders, when necessary, leads to an unjustified rise in production costs. In this paper, the MKR and KCO models were utilised to identify the most appropriate model for application in Bisil and Simba quarries situated in Kajiado County, Kenya. Split-Desktop was used for blast fragment measurement by processing digital images obtained after blasting and computing the fragment size distribution of the blasted rock. As per the investigation, the recorded percentages of boulders generated at the sites ranged from 7% to 12.3% for the Simba quarry and from 11.2% to 23.9% for the Bisil quarry, respectively. Regression, correlation, and root mean square error (RMSE) were employed as the primary performance indicators. The study concluded that KCO outperformed MKR in accurately predicting blast fragment sizes in the examined quarries.

THIS chapter and Chapter 19 deal with the heat quantities involved in open-hearth steelmaking, including the thermal efficiency of the furnace as a generator of high-temperature heat, the heat storage in the steel and slag produced and in the furnace walls, and the heats of the various chemical reactions involved in combustion, in the formation of slag, and the refining of steel. The fundamental laws to be considered are the first two laws of thermodynamics as applied to problems involving sensible and potential (or latent) heat only: 1. Heat input equals heat outflow plus storage. 2. Heat may be transferred only from a hotter body to a colder one. The first of these laws relates to the various heat quantities or the heat balance of the process. No one has as yet made an open-hearth heat balance that came out almost exactly balanced. The cause probably lies in the difficulties of accurate temperature and flow-rate measurements at the high temperatures involved and the inherent complexities in flow distribution and air leakage present in any real open-hearth furnace system. Some idea of the magnitude of the heat quantities involved can be obtained by a brief, crude outline of the heat balance of a 90-ton heat of steel. We will assume a 60 to 70 per cent hot- metal charge in a fairly fast working and only moderately efficient furnace, burning fuel oil, with a fuel consumption of around 4 million Btu per net ton of ingots produced. The time from start of charge to tap is 9 hr. During this period, the oil burned represents 360 million Btu and the sensible heat in the preheated air at the port ends is 117 million Btu, so that the total heat input at the ports is 477 million Btu. Heat stored in the steel and slag at the end of the heat, plus the various amounts absorbed by certain bath reactions, amounts to a total of 195 million Btu, but 120 million of this is supplied by the heat in the hot metal and by various heat-evolving reactions in the bath,

Full-Scale cyclic field testing was performed on a 3x3 pile group consisting of nine cast-in-drilled-hole (CIDH) reinforced concrete shafts and a comparable single-shaft in order to investigate group interaction effects. Both specimens were constructed with pile diameters of d = 0.61m (2 ft), fixed head boundary conditions, and placed in stiff clayey soil at a test site near the LAX Airport in Southern California. Internal instrumentation was installed in the single pile as well as in three piles within the pile group to obtain pile curvatures. External instrumentation controlled the lateral displacement of the specimens. A combination of experimentally and analytically obtained p-y curves for the single pile was used to simulate results for piles located in the group when field data were not available. All test specimens were tested to structural failure and excavated after test completion to investigate pile damage and plastic hinge formations. Calculated group interaction factors ranged between 1.0 at very small displacement levels of <2.5 mm (0.1 in), 0.8 at the initiation of the pile-soil-pile interaction, i.e. between 4 mm - 15 mm (0.16-0.6 in), and increased towards 0.9 near structural failure (displacement >25 mm or 1 in). A literature set of p-multipliers was found to reproduce an accurate fit to the available load displacement test data from the group.

"Carbon has been the principal reducing agent in producing metals for centuries. Carbon is an inexpensive reducing agent, but also an effective one, as any undergraduate who knows her Ellingham diagrams is aware. Even in the production of aluminum, an electrolytic process, carbon consumed at the anodes serves to reduce the voltage of the Hall-Héroult cell. The interest in reducing the amount of anthropogenic CO2 has led to this examination of whether a switch to hydrogen as a major reductant is feasible and economic. The main source of hydrogen is natural gas and its production entails the generation of CO2; however, that CO2 is more easily captured than, say, the CO2 leaving an iron blast furnace. Calculations and speculations lead to conclusions about whether there is significant benefit to be obtained from such a radical change in our way of producing metals and the approximate cost of such change.IntroductionThe 1991 paper by Forrest and Szekely1 was one of the first to examine the impact of CO2 emissions from the primary metals industries on global climate change. These authors compared data from 1968 and 1985 and reported a drop in carbon emissions from 115.8 million tons to 65.6Mt over this period, the latter figure representing approximately 1% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. Much of this reduction was due to a drop in steel output (with carbon emissions increasing within the aluminum and copper industries in this period) but some were due to technological changes such as increased use of continuous casting. A more recent paper on CO2 emissions, focused on the steel industry in Japan, is that of Ariyama and Sato2. These authors report CO2 emissions of 182.4Mt from the Japanese steel, industry in 2003, down from 194.8Mt in 1990. The former represents 14% of the GHG emissions for Japan in 2003. The Bureau of Mines Helium Field Operations has developed a method for determining the helium-3 CHe) content of natural gas and mixtures eontaining 0.5% to 100% helium. The helium is preconcentrated by passing samples through anhydrone, a liquid-nitrogen-cooled chareoal trap, and a titanium absorption trap. The mass spectrometer used to analyze the samples is tuned to 3He at mle ::=; 3.016. Hydrogen deuteride (HD+) interference is minimized by the titanium absorption trap and high instrument resolution. Sample measurements are compared with identically made measurements of a gravimetrically prepared primary standard. The method has a limit of detection of 0.15 ppb with a relative deviation of 13% below the 1~ppb level. The relative deviation is less than 7% for gases eontaining over 100 ppb 3He. The helium isotope ratios of natural gases from the Bureau&apos;s Tuck-Trigg Dome Red Cave, the Bush Dome Red Cave, and the Bush Dome Brown Dolomite Formations are distinguishable from one another and from the isotope ratio of crude helium produced from the Panhandle-Hugoton Gasfield.

The San Manuel property is in town&ips 8S and 9S, range 16E, Gila and salt River Base and Meridan, State of Arizona. This area is in the Old Hat mining district, southern pinal county, and is about 31/25 miles southwest of the town of Mammoth on the San Pedro River And one mile south of the Mammoth mine at Tiger, Arizona, The property consists of over 150 contiguous lode claims. The old Hat district was prospected prior to the civil war, but there was little or no production until 1881.1 The chief producers have been the Mammoth and Mohawk mines, now consolidated and operating as the st. Anthony Mining and Development Co., Ltd. Production to 1936 was $5,200,000, of which 83 pet was gold.2 Since 1940 the production has been chiefly lead and zinc, and some molybdenum and vanadium. There are a few small properties in the vicinity that have produced very minor tonnages of copper ore. In the San Manuel group there are claims which have been held continuously from 1906 to the present time, and at least two churn-drill holes were put down on or near the outcrop in 1917. No logs for these holes are available, but it is assumed that the grade of copper encountered was not sufficient to encourage further exploration. A small amount of ore has been shipped from open cuts on the San Manuel outcrop area, but there is no record of the tonnage Or grade. It is estimated that not more than 50 tons were mined. These cuts, plus a few shallow shafts and some short adits indicate limited and unenthusiastic prospecting at San Manuel. In 1942, through the efforts of James M. Douglas, R. B. Giffin, Victor Erickson, and Henry W. Nichols, owners of the Sari Manuel group, the Reconstruction Finance Corporation and War Production Board authorized the United States Geological Survey to investigate the property, and by their recommendation, the United States Bureau of Mines was authorized to put down a limited number of churn-drill holes. The Bureau of Mines carried On drilling from November 1943 to February 1945 Seventeen holes were drilled, varying from 305 to 1990 ft in depth. The property was brought to the attention of Magma Copper Co. in June 1944, and an option agreement was made with the Owners. Subsequently, a group of claims lying north of the original group and held by the Apex Lead Vanadium Mining Corp, and a group to the east held by the Quarelli family, were optioned. "From preliminary investigations it has been observed that although evaporation losses may be estimated by comparing single values of certain physical properties of crude oils and their evaporation residues, such techniques possess little accuracy unless both the evaporation process and the variation of the property as a function of the process are completely known. The accuracy of estimation may be increased somewhat through the comparison of property mid-per-cent curves. Further increases in accuracy are possible if bottoms yield •curves rather than mid-percent curves are used. The use of both the mid-percent and bottoms yield curves however involves a prohibitive amount of effort in most cases. Examinations of distillation bottoms from Hempel type distillations carried to end points just short of the cracking point have indicated that these bottoms are not appreciably affected by the evaporation process. It was further observed that bottoms of identical API gravity, obtained from a crude oil and its evaporation residues behave as if they were pure components which were unaffected by evaporation. Based on these observations Hempel distillation bottoms of equal API gravity were obtained for a crude oil and its various evaporation residues from API gravity bottoms yield curves. The volume percent of these bottoms in the crude oil and its residues were used to calculate the evaporation losses suffered by the crude in order to yield the various residues. The results indicate that, although further refinements in technique are required, it is possible to calculate evaporation losses with an accept-able degree of accuracy through the use of this method."

"The development of processing methods for the preparation .of three electronic materials with rare-earth components is discussed. The resulting processing innovations are the results of a search for an economically competitive pilot scale or industrial production flowsheet without compromising the required properties of the final products. The three cases highlighted in this presentation are: 1) The preparation of high energy (Pr-Nd-Ce)FeB magnets for MRI application from a mixed-rare-earth oxide with a narrow range of composition directly prepared from the solvent extraction circuit of bastnaesite ore. 2) The kg production of the giant magnetocaloric effect Gds(SixGe1-x)4 magnetic refrigerant materials from commercial grade gadolinium metal (95 to 98 at. % pure) instead of high purity gadolinium metal (99.8 at. %); and 3). An industrial chemical synthesis flowsheet for the production of the superconductor precursor of YBa2Cu3O7.INTRODUCTIONIn the laboratory discovery stage, the synthesis of a new material is carried out using very high purity components, usually the highest purity available. As the new material is studied and characterized, the effectiveness of its desirable properties becomes better defined and understood. The evaluation of the effectiveness of the .property over the range of a given parameter and other interactions are further studied. Once it's potential application becomes clear, a practical and economical processing method need to be developed. The successful material processing flow sheet does not necessarily have to be a scale up of the laboratory procedure. At this stage, substitution of starting components and with lower purity materials is considered as the economics of the processing becomes a major issue. "In 1980, J.S. Redpath Limited were retained by Dickenson Mines Limited to increase hoisting capacity from 700 to 1000 tons per day. The hoisting capacity of the present skip-over-cage system could not be increased significantly through design modifications. The other constraint was a minimum of disruption to the current production. The Dickenson shaft was a three-compartment shaft from surface to the 8th level and four compartments before the 8th to the 23rd level. The solution to the problem was to remove the services from the shaft man-way compartment from the 8th level to surf ace by drilling a borehole close to the shaft and rerouting those services through the borehole to the 8th level. A service compartment would then be available from surf ace to the 23rd level.By providing a service hoist in this compartment, the skip hoist would then be free to produce the 1000-tons/day required production. This paper will describe the search for the required hoist and the friction hoist selected for the project, and trace the design modifications required to modify the hoist to suit the Dickenson application and satisfy the Department of Labour safety requirements.The paper has been co-authored by J.S. Redpath Limited and C.L. Tiley Associates, who participated in the design changes and eventual commissioning of the hoist.IntroductionIn the earl y part of 1980, J.S. Redpath Limited conducted an engineering study on the Dickenson Mines Limited No. 1 Shaft materials handling system. The object of the engineering study was to investigate the possibility of increasing the tonnage hoisted from the No. 1 Shaft complex by adding a service cage compartment and service hoist. This would permit utilization of the existing hoisting plant solely for production hoi sting. A further consideration of the engineering study was that any alterations had to be accomplished with little, or no, interruption to production."

Abstract As part of the active development programme pursued by Dominion Magnesium Limited since 1945, a modern extrusion plant was erected and has been in operation for about twelve months. The only source of nigh purity magnesium in the world, Canadian metal is produced by metallurgical processes within the frame-work of the mining industry, which gives a different viewpoint to every phase of production from other world suppliers of commercial grade metal whose operations are based on chemical industries and techniques. The superior properties of corrosion resistance and grain refinement have aided a programme of standardization, reducing the number of alloys supplied in extruded form from seven to four as an aid to economic production. The first big step was the development of a general purpose alloy known as AZ?21x covering all decorative and medium stressed applications, which will supersede two older alloys. Sales approaching a million feet in this alloy show that it bids fair to become the &apos;mild steel&apos; of the magnesium industry, its applications ranging from terrazzo floor strip to textile machinery and television mast components. In the high stressed field, metallurgical features preclude low-cost extrusion of the older high-strength alloys, but recent development of a magnesium alloy containing zirconium promises an easily workable metal. Hitherto produced by expensive chemical additions, research now shows that the alloy can be produced by metallurgical means, which may make this alloy available for a wide range of commercial applications. Thus the future development programme for extruded products in the form of tube, bars, shapes, and structural angles and channels may evolve two alloys to cover all applications for strengths up to 52,000 lb. per sq. in. Such standardization is the result of taking advantage of the physical and metallurgical properties of high-purity magnesium instead of accepting techniques based on metal produced by older processes.

INTRODUCTION The Lake Merced Transport is being constructed as part of San Francisco&apos;s Clean Water Program. The Clean Water Program, which began in the early 1970&apos;s, is designed to control wet weather, storm sewage overflows into the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay. To accomplish this goal, a system of large underground storage and transport facilities, pump stations, modernized treatment plants, and outfalls is being built. By 1991, eighty percent of the system had been completed and was in operation. One of the remaining projects for the Clean Water Program is the Lake Merced Transport. The Lake Merced Transport is located in the extreme southwestern portion of San Francisco, as shown in Figure 1, Project Location. The transport will convey dry weather flow from the existing Lake Merced Pump Station to the Westside Pump Station. During wet weather, the transport will fill with sewage and runoff, with a storage capacity of 36 million liters. The Lake Merced Transport was expected to be excavated entirely within the Colma Formation, an alluvial deposit consisting of weakly cemented sand. Once excavation of the access portal at the Sloat/Great Highway parking lot began, it became evident that a portion of the tunnel would be excavated through beach/dune sand. The stainless steel sheets of permanent cathodes at Norddeutsche Affinerie (NA) were damaged by corrosion after nearly 11 years in operation. The necessary raising of the strength for stripping the copper had increased the deformation of the stainless steel blades. Current efficiency declined. After investigating the possibilities, like buying new cathodes or treating the steel surface, i.e. by sliding, a repair process was developed whereby the stainless steel sheet was exchanged. Special laser technology for cutting used blades und welding new stainless steel sheets underneath the used hanger bar was applied because the energy input into steel is the lowest of all welding methods. The new stainless steel sheet was welded with the rolling line in a horizontal direction. The achieved flatness of the repaired cathode blades amounted to less than 4mm per meter. During 11 months NA repaired nearly 36,000 permanent cathodes and put them back into operation. Repair costs were much lower than the costs of buying new ones and current efficiency increased again to more than 96% with a current density of 340 A/m².

Caterpillar has been involved in highwall mining since the purchase of Bucyrus in 2011. The Cat® HW300 is a continuation of the Superior Highwall Miner that was first sold in the USA in 1994. Currently, there are more than 80 machines supplied worldwide, and Caterpillar envisions increasing the population steadily in the coming years. The Cat highwall miner product group, based in Beckley, WV, has been involved in the sales of all miners to date. With the dealer model that Caterpillar is using, more people, dealers in particular, need to be trained on the application of highwall mining. A site investigation is a highwall specialist?s work, and Caterpillar assists dealers and customers in determining the technical feasibility of highwall mining on mine sites. With the ever-increasing amount of requests, it proved to be important that people without highwall mining expertise, yet who are familiar with mining, could perform a very quick analysis of a potential highwall mining site to determine at an early stage if it is worthwhile to invest the time and money of all parties?customer, dealer, and Caterpillar?in further follow-up. Among all gravity concentration methods, Shaking-table is the most effective one from the metallurgical point of view. In this study, Shaking-table was used for concentrating a manganese ore sample from Ghasem Abad area in Kerman, Iran. Experiments were designed by using L8Taguchi design with five variables and each variable in two levels. The influence of each variable and their interactions on the operation of the device was studied. The variables under investigation were: table slope, table frequency, water flowrate, feed rate, and particle size. The manganese concentrate grade and recovery were used as response variables. It was shown that water flowrate, table slope, feed rate, and particle size are the significant variable on concentrate grade; while, all the variables influence manganese recovery.

Because of the growing importance of back analysis for the interpretation of rock slope failures, particularly in open pit mines, it is suggested a methodologic sequence of activities for dealing with those problems. The principal mathematical tools for the interpretation of the most common mechanisms of slope failures are reviewed, including methods of stress and strain analysis, which seem to be more powerful for parametrization studies, and for developing more realistic explanations of slope behaviour, such as the measurement of displacements. An application of those methods is described, using slope failures detected in a Brazilian uranium mine (Cercado), thus providing reliable shearing strength parameters for the rock mass discontinuites, which were used in the final pit design. The concept of using backanalysis results to supply input data for pit design was implemented by means of the excavation of an experimental trench within mine limits, where specific instruments were installed, and several slope failures were monitored and backanalysed, in order to yield information about sliding mechanisms in the future open pit.
