The removal of the refractoriness of a gold bearing pyrite- arsenopyrite ore is studied. Flotation concentrates were prepared and leached with a dilute acidic ferric sulfate solution. The elemental sulfur film which forms on arsenopyrite in the oxidation process is not responsible for the low rate of the arsenic dissolution observed. A positive effect on the leaching rate is observed when Ag' is added. This pretreatment eliminates the refractory nature of concentrates.

The Bureau of Mines is investigating the Co and Mn resource of the West-Central Arkansas District, including field investigations, mineralogical characterization, beneficiation, and hydrometallurgical tests. The deposits occur within the Ouachita Mountains and are con-trolled structurally, occurring along the axes of anticlines making up the mountain ridges. Brecciated novaculite is cemented with a mixture of Mn oxides, primarily cryptomelane and psilome-lane. Cobalt is concentrated within a particular Mn oxide phase, lithiophorite. Chemical analyses on head samples reported up to 25 pct Mn and 0.17 pct Co. Magnetic separation yielded products with up to 41 pct Mn and 0.22 pct Co at recoveries of 95 pct Mn and 93 pct Co.

"The relative-value (R-value), discrimination-factor (D-factor), and vector-ratio (V-ratio) method (RDVM) provides a geological knowledge-based statistical and geological-genetic interpretation scheme for geochemical data that enhances discovery in geochemical exploration. The practical advantage of RDVM is that it synthesizes geochemical features geologically related to ore-deposit discovery in three steps: reclassifying element concentrations using log-probability plots into R-values; calculating geologically defined D-factors from R-values; and determining V-ratios. D-factors are the sum of R-values, divided by the number of R-values summed. Based on the analyses selected, D-factors mimic rock or mineral deposit signatures. V-ratios refine interpretations of rock type and vector to orebody locations.RÉSUMÉ La méthode de la valeur relative (valeur R), du facteur de discrimination (facteur D) et du rapport de vecteurs (rapport V) (RDVM), fournit un schéma d’interprétation des données géochimiques basé sur les statistiques et les connaissances géologiques et la génétique géologique; ce schéma contribue aux découvertes en exploration géochimique. "In the present study, electrochemical measurements, especially cathodic potentiodynamic polarization (CPC) and cyclic potentiodynamic polarization (CPP), have been employed to study the kinetics of ferric reduction on chalcopyrite in aqueous Fe(II)Fe( III)H2SO4 solution at 90 °C and 110 °C. Results from the calculation of speciation in the above solution reveal that, at both 90 °C and 110 °C, the real Fe3+/Fe2+ ratio is much lower than the nominal ratio, which leads to smaller VALUES (for the reversible potential of the ferric/ferrous couple. Exchange current densities of the ferric/ferrous couple were obtained and are on the order of 106 10 5 A/cm2 a t 9 0 °C and 1 07 10 6 A/cm2 at 110 °C, respectively. The Tafel slopes from the CPP method are higher than those from the CPC method at both 90 °C and 110 °C. The transfer coefficients were about 0.360.59 at 90 °C and 0.370.65 at 110 °C. Based on the exchange current densities obtained, the rate constant kc was calculated. It was found that kc at 90 °C was slightly larger than at 110 °C, especially for the results obtained by the CPC method. The average rate constants are 862.17 cm/s for CPC and 65.30 cm/s for CPP at 90 °C, and 477.69 cm/s for CPC and 63.53 cm/s for CPP at 110 °C for nominal Fe3+/Fe2+ ratios ranging from 1:1 to 1000:1. INTRODUCTIONChalcopyrite is one of the most abundant copper-bearing minerals, accounting for approximately 70% of the world’s known copper reserves (Wang, 2005). Most of the currently proposed leaching processes are based on sulfuric acid with ferric ions and/or dissolved oxygen as oxidants. Some of these processes have been piloted in attempts to implement these technologies on an industrial scale, such as Activox (U.S. 5,232,491, 1993), Nenatech (U.S. 5,993,635, 1999), Dynatec (U.S. 5,730,776, 1998), AAC/UBC (U.S. 6,503,293, 2003), Total Pressure Oxidation (U.S. 5,698,170, 1997), CESL (U.S. 5,874,055, 1999) and Galvanox (U.S. 7,846,233, 2010).To date, much effort has been devoted to understanding the kinetics and mechanisms of the oxidative processes (Biegler & Horne, 1985; Córdoba, Muñoz, Blázquez, González, & Ballester, 2008, 2009; Ghahremaninezhad, Asselin, & Dixon, 2010; Hirato, Majima, & Awakura, 1987; Hiroyoshi, Kuroiwa, Miki, Tsunekawa, & Hirajima, 2004; Warren, Wadsworth, & El-raghy, 1982) or the cathode reduction reactions of chalcopyrite itself (Arce & González, 2002; Biegler & Swift, 1976; Biegler, 1977; Nava, González, Leinen, & Ramos-Barrado, 2008), by chemical or electrochemical methods. However, as the most important cathodic processes in chalcopyrite leaching systems, the cathodic reductions of ferric ions or dissolved oxygen are worth measuring due to their effects on the overall leaching rate, as predicted by mixed potential theory."

The Carson Hill mine of the Carson Hill Gold Mining Corporation is at Melones, Calaveras County, Calif. It is one of the numerous mines on the Mother Lode of California. The property extends for 8,400 feet along the outcrop of that important vein system. The elevation at the haulage level is about 1,000 feet above sea level. The use of techniques and equipment designed to pneumatically place backfill into an underground mine opening through boreholes for subsidence abatement has historically met with limited success, largely due to the inability to directly monitor the placement of the backfill in the opening. The success of a backfilling project cannot be guaranteed if it is not known whether the underground opening has been completely filled with backfill material. To overcome the inability to directly monitor backfill placement, the U.S. Bureau of Mines developed a pneumatic backfilling system that allows for direct viewing of the backfill as it is placed in an underground mine opening. This system utilizes a recently developed pneumatic nozzle coupled with an instrumentation package that allows for real-time observations and measurements of backfill placed in an underground opening through a borehole. The nozzle utilizes a high-velocity airstream to redirect backfill falling through a pipe in the borehole and directly in front of the nozzle; the airstream redirects and propels the backfill horizontally into the .mine opening at over 100 ft/s. The instrumentation package, mounted directly to the nozzle, contains a video camera, high-intensity lamps, laser-rangefinder, electronic compass, and water sensor.

Research was done to determine if a hydraulically operated penetrometer developed by the Bureau of Mines could be used to estimate the roof-bolt anchorage capacity of mine roof rock. Tests were conducted both in the laboratory using cement cylinders and underground in shale rock. Hardness readings were measured by the penetrometer around the periphery of the bolt holes at the anchorage horizon. Roof bolts Nere then installed and subjected to an anchorage test. The results showed that the penetrometer readings could be used to determine the optimum stratum for roof-bolt anchorage but could not be used to make an accurate estimate of the anchorage capacity.

The Bureau of Mines estimated the remaining lode gold endowment of eight mining districts in Alaska using historic production data. A log-arithmic model of cumulative tonnage of ore processed versus cumulative grade was applied to the following districts: Chichagof, Fairbanks, Homer, Hope-Seward, Juneau, Ketchikan, Prince William Sound, and Willow Creek. To assess the remaining endowment, a computerized production data base was compiled from Bureau records. These data were aggregated in 5-yr intervals for each district. Data were sorted in order of declining grade, and log cumulative grade was plotted against log cumulative tonnage. Linear regression was performed on the data for each district. The linear equation for each curve was used to predict remaining endowment at a limiting mining grade. Based on conservative extrapolation of the grade-tonnage curves, a substantial total endowment of 8,415,100 tr oz of gold remains in the eight districts. The districts with the greatest remaining endowment are the Juneau, Chichagof, Fairbanks, and Willow Creek Districts.

"The St-Honoré carbonatite complex, located 8 miles north of Chicoutimi, Quebec, was discovered in September 1967 as abnormal radioactivity was detected in the course of SOQUEM's aerial surveys. The complex, covered by a shallow layer of Trenton limestone, has been explored by aeromagnetic, ground gravimetric and magnetic surveys, and 12,013 feet of diamond drilling. Its age, from potassium-argon dating, is 650 million years. The carbonatite is approximately kidney-shaped and has a surface area of 6 square miles, 20 per cent of which is explored. It shows a central core of coarse-grained massive dolomitic carbonatite and an outer ring of foliated dolomitic carbonatite.The exploration work to date has resulted in the discovery, in the foliated carbonatite, of an incompletely drilled niobium (columbium) zone of pyrochlore-bearing carbonatite, at least 1,000 by 800 feet in size. This zone contains 5,000 tons per vertical foot grading 0.86 per cent Nb205 or at least 15,000 tons per vertical foot grading 0.66 per cent Nb205 or 45,000 tons grading 0.48 per cent Nb20s. The pyrochlore contains an average of 64 per cent Nb,Os. The central core contains a zone of rare-earth-bearing carbonatite (as monazite), grading up to 4.5 per cent rare-earth oxide, 3,500 ppm zinc and 290 ppm molybdenum. Stocks of nepheline syenite and magnetite diorite accompany the carbonatite. The total analysis and trace-element contents of typical rocks are presented."

The coefficient of variability of the rebound tests are compared with those of laboratory compressive strength tests by other investigators.

The Bureau of Mines Mineral Industry Location System (MILS) is part of the computerized Minerals Availability System (MAS), a comprehensive data base of known mineral deposits. MILS, the location subsystem of MAS, has become widely used by the minerals industry and organizations with land-use planning and land management responsibilities. Information on more than 135,000 mineral locations and processing plants in the United States is contained in the data base. This information includes the name, location, mineral commodity, type of operation, bibliography, and cross-references for each property or prospect. Computer-drawn map overlays at various scales showing clustered MILS locations and computer printouts keyed to those overlays are available for inspection and reproduction at the Bureau's Field Operations Centers at Juneau, Alaska, Denver, Colo., Pittsburgh, Pa., and Spokane, Wash.

Microscopic evidence indicates that the high sinterability of certain commercial dolomites is tied to specific dolomite textural characteristics. This study encompasses detailed characterization of the unprocessed dolomite and sintering doloma results. The chemical and mineralogical compositions, insoluble residue, chemistry homogeneity, crystal size, primary carbonate texture, secondary dolomite texture, deformation structure, porosity type, porosity, and density of the raw dolomite were observed. These characteristics are compared with sintering trials of <74um powder-compacts samples in which holding times were varied. The evolution of the dolomite characteristics are reviewed and related to the final sintered doloma characteristics. The critical characteristics of a single-stage sintering brick dolomite are the following: 1) primary oolitic texture, 2) dolomite purity, 3) dolomite stoichiometry 4) minimal impurities, less than 1 weight {%} Fe2O3 Al2O3 and SiO2, 5) chemical homogeneity, 6) high density, 7) very low porosity, S) very coarse homogeneous crystallinity, 9) nonplanar dolomite texture, 10) abundant strain related slip microdeformation structures, 11) minimal subsequent alteration. Even with grinding to <74um the nonplanar dolomite texture and slip deformation still have a major effect on doloma sintered density. The three newly identified characteristics of single-stage sintered refractory brick dolomite are their primary oolitic texture, secondary nonplanar texture and abundance of stress related microdeformation structures. The primary oolitic texture reflects a homogeneous pure carbonate with respect to chemistry and crystal size secondary nonplanar texture produces crystals with large surface area to volume ratio. Stress related slip deformation moves CO, groups in to the same site of another CO, group but different orientation which is very unstable. All of these characteristics may facilitate the formation of higher density dolorna sinters.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the application of oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) and pH measurements to environmental studies of mining and mineral processing wastes, and developed a computer program to estimate the concentrations of species of lead present in samples from a lead processing waste site. The methods and techniques for the ORP-pH measurements were investigated using known standard solutions made in the laboratory, samples from a ferric oxide waste disposal pond at a rutile production plant, and samples of well water and stream water from the lead processing waste site. ORP values were measured from 5 to 80 °C, from pH 1 to pH 12, and at various ratios of oxidant to reductant. The ORP-pH values can help identify valence values and species of ions present, including those of major, minor, and trace concentrations, and also indicate possible reactions at various pH values. The ORP measurements versus temperature yield data from which thermodynamic values can be calculated. The application and limitations of these measurements are discussed, and a brief discussion of the computational program to identify species of lead is presented.

The plant data were collected from three streams around a dense medium drum for coarse coal cleaning operated at various volumetric ratio of medium-to-feed. The effect of the volumetric ratio of medium-to-feed (MF) and particle sizes on the performance criteria, g50 and Ep, of the dense medium drum. These measured data were adjusted and calculated for the yields and balanced relative density distributions by mass balanced method based on the statistic principle. These balanced data were then used to formulate the mathematical models of the separation distribution curves for the various feed size intervals. The correlation equations for the g50 and Ep as the function of inverse of the feed size, and MF and total throughput were established. A numerical algorithm utilizing the Secant method, based on the root searching principle, was developed for yield optimization and simulation of dense medium drum separation to improve the separation efficiency and hence the product yield. The relationships between the direct ash content and relative density of the particles in feed and the products were established and incorporated into the numerical algorithm for predicting the product quality.

"Iron ore for alternate iron processes concerns alternate iron products designed for use in EAF (electric arc furnace) steelmaking processes. These alternate iron products include both DRI (direct reduced iron), HBI (hot briquetted iron) and merchant pig iron. Merchant pig iron can be produced in conventional blast furnaces, mini blast furnaces (including charcoal BF's) or novel processes such as RHF/SAF (rotary hearth furnace/submerged arc furnace) such as Iron Dynamics or RHF such as Mesabi Nugget. These novel processes are coal based and can use iron ore concentrates or recycled steel plant oxides. The blast furnace processes can use conventional feed materials: pellets, sinter, lump ore and coke. However, DRI and HBI processes are predominantly pellet based but require DR grade pellets that are low enough in acidic gangue (SiO2 and Al2O3) to avoid additional expense in the EAF process This paper will focus on the quality and availability of DR grade pellets for NAFTA DRI/HBI plants but also concentrates for fines based processes and feed materials for merchant pig iron production. INTRODUCTION This paper will outline alternative (to the blast furnace) competitive ironmaking processes and process routes. Within each section the types of iron ore to be utilized will be discussed. Before discussing some of the details of these processes, it may be appropriate to review some definitions and commonly used terms within this industry. DefinitionsDirect Reduction: Reduce iron oxide to metallic iron without melting. Unreduced ore compounds remain as undesirable oxides • Direct Reduced Iron: Iron oxide feedstock exits in same form as entered (pellets in, pellets out; lumps in, lumps out) • Hot Briquetted Iron: DRI that has been hot (1200°F, 650°C) briquetted to a high density pillow shaped briquette • Hot Metal: Molten iron in liquid form, above 2500°F, 1370°C • Pig Iron: Solid product of the iron blast furnace • Residuals: Undesirable elements such as copper, nickel, chromium, tin, sulfur, molybdenum and phosphorus • Gangue: Rock minerals in the iron ore such as silica (SiO2), alumina (A2O3), calcia (CaO), magnesia (MgO). These remain in the oxide form in DR processes. • Reduction: Fe2O3 + 3 CO = 2 Fe + 3CO2 2 Fe2O3 + 3 H2 = 2 Fe + 3H2O (Fe2O3 > Fe3O4 > FeO > Fe)"

This paper describing the practice at the concentrator of the Minas de Matahambre, S. A., is one of a series being; prepared by the Bureau f Mines on milling methods and costs. The Minas de Matahambre, S. A., concentrator treats the production of the Matahambre mine and has a capacity of 1,300 tons of copper ore per day by selective flotation. During the year 1930 the heads averaged 4.55 per cent copper, the concentrates 29.20 per cent copper and the recovery was 95.96 per cent.

Using powerful database management software, nested-field analysis and microanalysis of narratives have been made of West Virginia accident data, resulting in a new approach for targeting and prioritizing safety interventions by county, mine size, specific mine, job title, type injury, etc. and combinations of these parameters. The analyses have been useful in focusing training and discussion sessions on specific work problems, trends, conditions, and situations for targeted groups of miners. Application of the technique will be presented in this paper, along with comparisons of various mine performance measures.

Gearless mill drives (GMDs) are the workhorse in the mineral processing industries, more specifically when it comes to grinding crushed ore and cement (in various production stages) in semiautogenous (SAG) mills and large ball mills. They are renowned for their excellent reliability and robustness, long lifespan, and little need for maintenance, and thus yield a low total cost of ownership (TCO). A GMD represents a major investment for a mineral processing plant, and its availability is pivotal for the grinding process. As a basic rule, shut-down periods are to be minimized, but even much more important is that unscheduled shut-downs be avoided. In this contribution, we will present a portfolio of innovative remote diagnostic that consist of the following three key components: 1. Trouble shooting is a form of corrective maintenance and is based on state-of-the art remote access technology, thus enabling highly skilled engineers to access the current sensor readings anytime and from anywhere in order to resolve urgent problems together with the GMD user. 2. Periodic maintenance reports are a form of preventive and predictive maintenance and aim at continuous improvement based on long-term historical records and analyses of multiple measured signals. These detailed reports highlight the health and operational status of the GMD and are periodically (e.g. 3 months) submitted to the customer. 3. Remote condition monitoring spans across preventive and predictive maintenance and is based on continuous recording and automatic analyses of relevant signals using advanced algorithms. The main issue is how to handle the enormous flood of data in an intelligent manner. The results of these analyses are made available to both the GMD user and supplier in real time in order to increase the availability and reliability of the GMD. In this paper, we consider various parts of the GMD, e.g. the cycloconverter, the ring motor, the auxiliary devices (e.g. cooling and lubrication systems), and also phenomena related to the mill itself (e.g. state and quantity of charge). The signal analysis techniques range from simple threshold-based analyses to complex time and frequency domain analyses. We will illustrate the benefits of the proposed approaches with some selected examples.
