The Tri-State district, as its name indicates, is composed of portions of three States, the southeastern corner of Kansas, the northeastern corner of Oklahoma, and an adjacent strip of Missouri east of these portions of Kansas and Oklahoma. An area approximately 40 miles long in a northeasterly-southwesterly direction, and 30 miles wide at right angles thereto, containing minable occurrences of ore at widely scattered locations, comprises the district. However, what has been and is the main productive area, is a strip about 35 miles long and 10 miles wide, which begins at Miami, Okla., as its southern extremity and runs in a northeasterly direction through Commerce, Picher, and Hockerville, Okla., Baxter Springs and Galena, Kans., and Joplin, Webb City-Carterville and Carthage, Mo. Almost the entire present production comes from the area between Commerce and Baxter Springs.

The investigation to evaluate the reserves of coking coal is being made by the Bureau of Mines in three parts: (1) To estimate known measured and indicated recoverable reserves of all coking coal; (2) to upgrade marginal coals through effective preparation; and (3) to study carbonizing properties of coals and coal blends not now widely used for metallurgical coke making. This is the ninth of a series of reports giving results of studies by counties under part (1) of the investigation. (See Appendix.) This report covers Raleigh County, W. Va., which comprises parts of Bald Knob, Eccles, Beckley, Meadow Creek, Mullens, Flattop, and Big Bend quadrangles. (See fig. 1.) A base map for each bed in each quadrangle was made to the scale 1 inch equals 1,200 feet. Maps of mines, location of drill holes, bed and total coal thickness, and outcrop of the bed were plotted on the maps. With all available data plotted, isopach lines were drawn to limit areas of known unmined reserves in beds 0 to 14 inches thick, 14 to 28 inches thick, 28 to 42 inches thick, and over 42 inches thick. These areas of coal reserves also were divided into measured" and "indicated" categories. All areas in each thickness range and in each category, mined-out areas. areas excluded from the estimate but which may contain reserves based only on geologic inference, and areas outside of the outcrop were measured by planimeter on the base maps, Estimates of total reserves 14 inches and more thick and maps for individual beds were prepared from these data.

I-Introduction The possibility of adapting low-temperature reduction methods to the treatment of iron ores has been suggested on numerous occasions. Papers published on the subject include, notably, Bulletin 270 of the United States Bureau of Mines on The Production of Sponge Iron, the Symposium of the American Electrochemical Society (1927) on The Gaseous Reduction of Ores and Other Metallic Compounds, and Les Procédés Actuels de Traitement Direct du Minerai de Fer, by A. Mayer (Revue de l'Industrie Minerale, Nov. 15th, 1932) (1). The present paper contains the results of an investigation of the reducibility of some Ontario ores. The concentration of these ores and of the products of reduction has also been investigated.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the recovery of tin and silver from the Coal Creek deposit in the Talkeetna Mountains, AK. Approximately 5 million st of reserves grading 0.2 pct Sn with silver credits of 0.2 tr oz/st have been delineated by drilling. A 10-to 25-pct Sn gravity concentrate was produced by treating the minus 20-mesh ore with a spiral, then regrinding to minus 65 mesh and tabling. Sulfide contamination in the gravity concentrate was as high as 60 pet. Sulfide flotation of this concentrate produced tailings containing 40 to 50 pet Sn. Overall recovery was 76 pct for tin but only 5 to 10 pct for silver because of losses during sulfide flotation. Other methods tested to clean the concentrate included cassiterite flotation, gangue flotation, nitric acid leaching, and wet and dry magnetic separation. Tin beneficiation tests on the minus 325-mesh fraction included cassiterite flotation, vanning, sulfide flotation, and fuming. The bench-scale and locked-cycle tests were used to estimate the mass flows for a 1,000-st/d plant.

"Several studies on the bulk density of coals prepared for byproduct-oven use were undertaken during the war by the Bureau of lanes in cooperation with the Office of the Solid Fuels Administrator and with the advice of the Coke Production Committee. The primary purpose of these studies was either to produce more uniform coke or to increase the throughput of existing facilities or both; the goal was increased Production of steel for war. As these studies were made, detailed reports were sent to the individual companies with whom the Bureau cooperated; also two reports,5/6/on the general subject of bulk-density control were published. In the course of the work, data were gathered that now prove of value in judging the merit of carious methods of testing bulk density and the limits of application of each method in byproduct-oven operations.Since the cessation of hostilities, the .Bureau section (Coke Production Survey Section) that conducted this work has been liquidated, but it was felt advisable to prepare a report on the accumulated experience so that it would be in a form available for the use of the industry and also as a base for any further research on the control of fluctuating bulk densities in coke ovens.It is hoped that the data and experiences recorded herein will be of material assistance to the many who have had difficulty in obtaining reproducible results in bulk-density testing. Since the data were gathered in the course of extending aid to individual plants in minimizing the deleterious effects of fluctuations in bulk density of oven charges on the quality and quantity of coke produced, certain desirable phases of an over-all investigation were not covered. However, on certain of these phases qualitative indications are available and the policy followed herein is that suggested by the American Society for Testing Materials Manual on Presentation of Data7/ that lacking quantitative information, relevant material should be included even though it ""may be qualitative in character, some may even be vague."""

"INTRODUCTION Corrosion of sections of piping used in steam-heating systems is frequently regarded as unavoidable, and periodic replacement is provided. Surfaces exposed to newly condensed steam appear to be especially vulnerable to attack. As an added nuisance, solid products of the corrosion tend to accumulate, plugging return lines.The trouble is ascribed in the main to carbon dioxide and oxygen 3/ 4 / 5/ 6/ dissolved in the condensate. When oxygen is the principal factor, the corrosion usually is characterized by pitting. Carbon dioxide tend3 to cause an acidic condensate which dissolves the metal more uniformly and produces the familiar failure at threaded areas where the piping is relatively thin, and where high stress may tend to acceletate the attack. Carbon dioxide enters the system with the feedwater, generally in a combined form such as carbonates and bicarbonates. Oxygen enters both with the raw feedwater-and as air leaking into lines under partial vacuum. The larger central-heating plants have sought to reduce corrosion by eliminating these gases as much as possible. A smaller plant ordinarily lacks the equipment and technical supervision required for this purpose."

The Bureau of Mines performed a study of the availability of cobalt from market economy countries. The study entailed the detailed analysis of 97 deposits which contain 3.9 billion lb of cobalt at the demonstrated level; in 94 of the deposits cobalt is recovered as a byproduct, and in 3 it is considered the primary product. Since 97 pet of all recoverable cobalt is derived as a byproduct from copper and nickel deposits, the report focused on these two sources. At an assumed market price of $0.89flb for copper, $3.45/lb for nickel, $475/tr 021 for platinum, and $7/lb for cobalt, 1,330 million lb of cobalt at the demonstrated level are potentially available. This total includes 1,105 million lb of cobalt from copper properties, 190 million lb from nickel, 29 million lb from platinum, and 6 million lb from primary cobalt. This analysis indicates that the production cost for 589 million lb of cobalt can be totally covered by the revenues obtained from the other metals produced. The impacts of increases in capital investment and energy costs are also discussed.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines and the State of Indiana cooperated with AMAX Coal Co. and its consultants to determine the effects of coal mine overburden blasting on nearby pipelines. Five pressurized 76-m pipeline sections were installed on the Minnehaha Mine highwall near Sullivan, IN, for testing to failure. Four 17-to 51-cm-diameter welded steel pipes and one 22-cm PVC pipe were monitored for vibration, strain, and pressure for a period of 6 months while production blasting advanced up to the test pipeline field. In contrast to previous studies of small-scale, close-in blasting for construction, these tests involved overburden blasts of up to 950 kg per delay in 31-cm blastholes. Analyses found low pipe responses, strains, and calculated stresses from even large blasts. Ground vibrations of 120 to 250 mm/s produced worst case strains that were about 25 pct of the strains resulting from normal pipeline operations and calculated stresses of only about 10 to 18 pct of the ultimate tensile strength. No pressurization failures or permanent strains occurred even at vibration amplitudes of 600 mm/s.

Five preparation plants employing concentrating tables for washing 3/8- inch to 0 raw coal were tested. Two of the plants were washing Pittsburgh-bed coal, two were washing Pocahontas-bed coal, and one was washing Elkhorn-bed coal. Samples of the feed to and products from the tables were collected over the normal operating shift. These samples were analyzed, and complete performance criteria were determined. The results of this study show that the concentrating table is an effective fine-coal cleaner even when operating at 40 percent over the recommended 10 tons per hour feed rate. Recovery efficiencies for the 3/8-inch to 200- mesh size fraction ranged from 97.3 to 99.3 percent; maximum yield errors and ash errors were 2.4 and 1.0 percent, respectively; probable errors ranged from 0.074 to 0.115 specific gravity units and error areas from 52 to 73 square centimeters. The amount of minus 200-mesh material in the water used for feed water and dressing water to the table had no significant effect on the sharpness of the separation achieved but did have an effect on the ash content of the clean- coal product. In the one plant studied, the substitution of fresh water for plant circulating water reduced the ash content of the clean coal by about 6 percentage points.

Statistical methods applied at the Bureau of Mines Denver Mining Research Center to data from metallic ore bodies were used to evaluate lignite reserves from core data and to predict the extent of lignite horizons in some Texas lignite beds. Six lignite seam units were studied using data from 361 drill holes. The data indicate a total of 214.2 million tons of lignite in the area examined, and probable reserves of 113 million tons in an area 2,000 feet beyond the limits established by the drill holes. It was demonstrated that lignite reserves present in lenticular beds could be reliably determined by statistical techniques, and that core drilling could be optimized to maximum information with minimum drill holes. The technique described is applicable to other coal beds.

This paper describes mining methods and practices of the Chino Mines Division, Kennecott Copper Corp., Grant County, N. Mex. It is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods, practices, and costs in various mining districts of the United States. A similar program was conducted from 1928 to 1939, which helped to improve the efficiency of mining operations. The primary purpose of the program is to promote development and conservation of our mineral resources by disseminating technologic information on methods, practices, and related features in mining mineral deposits. It is expected that the program will: (1) Promote efficiency in operating mines; (2) assist operators and engineers in evaluating and developing new mineral deposits; (3) provide data for engineering curriculums in mining schools; and (4) furnish performance and cost data for revising engineering handbooks and for inclusion in engineering textbooks.

"INTRODUCTION Recovery of core specimens from subsurface formations and their subsequent analysis are important aids in efficient development and operation of oil and gas fields. Gore specimens first were obtained mainly for the geologic information they revealed; now they are analyzed to determine many of the physical characteristics and conditions of the subsurface formations as well. Cores recovered from the producing formations may be analyzed for porosity, permeability, oil content, ""connate"" water content, and other physical and chemical properties of the formation, all to the end of furnishing enough data for making reliable estimates of the quantity and avail¬ability of oil and as within a reservoir and in devising efficient means for their withdrawal.Examination of bottom-hole samples of oil gives valuable information concerning the amount of gas in solution in the oil within the reservoir and the resultant shrinkage of the oil when the gas is released. Producing characteristics of reservoirs nay be determined by means of subsurface pressure and temperature gages and measurements male at the wellhead; however, unless reliable core analyses are available, these data have only limited use in any quantitative study of reserves. In such a study the quantity of oil, gas, and water contained in a unit volume of the reservoir formation is extremely important. Although reliable methods of analyzing cores have been developed and the data thus obtained are valuable, their applications become more limited or reservoirs at higher temperatures and pressures are discovered. This condition results almost entirely from the fact that in recovering a core from a formation of high pressure and temperature by present methods a large part of the fluid content of the core is lost or contaminated to an unknown extent. For a number of years most petroleum engineers have held that if this loss and contamination of the fluid content of a core were eliminated, the value of core analyses would be increased greatly."

The Clogau St DavidÆs gold mine has a recorded production of around 81 000 oz Au and it is the largest mine in the Dolgellau gold-belt and BritainÆs most prolific historical producer. The original mine was first worked for copper, however; in 1854, gold was found in waste material from the St DavidÆs section. In recent times the mine has operated intermittently between 1983 - 2007. The principal black shale-hosted gold-bearing reef (Main Reef) can be traced for about 3 km, striking approximately NE-SW and dipping steeply between 60¦ - 90¦ SE. The reef system pinches and swells, changes strike and splits into a number of smaller branches. Reef width is variable, ranging from over 6 m to a few cm and in places reducing to small irregular blobs. The reef is internally complex and composed of swarms of narrow (1 - 300 mm) subparallel veins separated by country rock sheets. The gold-bearing veins within the reef package are discontinuous; though generally possess bonanza grades running 10s - 100s oz/t Au. It has historically been shown that some gold-rich vein segments can grade up to 300 oz/t Au. The predictability of the gold-rich segments is poor, but has been shown to be related to presence of the Clogau (black shale) Formation, and/or the mechanical interactions of the reef with greenstone sills, reef branching and splitting and/or cross-fractures to form ore shoots. The mine is currently being re-evaluated as a potential small-scale selective operation.CITATION:Dominy, S C and Platten, I M, 2012. The object of this report is to present certain pertinent data on the physical and chemical properties of South Arcot lignite and to present the results of several special tests to show how the raw lignite can be upgraded to superior fuels for certain special uses. The Bureau of Mines Branch of Coal Technology laboratories at Denver have advocated the drying and carbonization of all low-rank fuels for special uses and have introduced and developed new techniques for upgrading and refining noncoking coals. Application of these techniques to the South Arcot lignites was the object of the investigation, and this report presents significant data necessary for planning a fuel program based on utilization of dried and carbonized dusts. In general, the South Arcot lignite is similar in chemical properties to the high-moisture lignites found in the United States and has some physical properties similar to Australian brown coals. The samples submitted for test had lost moisture before delivery to the laboratory, and it has been necessary to estimate the analysis of the lignite in place in the mine. Various observations made in India by qualified technicians indicate that the bed moisture content of the entire seam is in the range of 54 to 56 percent. For estimating purposes in this report, the bed moisture content has been taken as 56 percent and the ash content of the fresh coal as 2.5 percent. A number of tests were made with various methanation catalysts in fixed-bed, conventional fluidized-bed, and multiple-feed, fluidized-bed equipment to develop catalysts and processes for methanation of synthesis gas. The results show: 1. Methanation reactions may be carried out in 1-inch, bench-scale equipment at high synthesis-gas throughputs with good temperature control of the reactions if a multiple-feed type of fluidized-bed design is used. 2. Nickel is superior to iron as a catalyst for the methanation of synthesis gas, unless the process is considered in terms of a combined operation that produces both gaseous and liquid products. 3. Techniques of catalyst preparation determine, to a large extent, the process life of nickel catalysts, and these techniques must be thoroughly investigated before any conclusions can be reached. 4. Enough data are available to indicate that the sulfur concentrations in synthesis gas that is used for methanation are extremely critical, and maximum process limits should be carefully evaluated.

New turbine blades designed to resist ash erosion were tested by the Bureau of Mines in a pilot-scale coal-fired gas turbine. After a total of 1,963 hours, the rotor blades were only slightly eroded; and they had an estimated useful life of 20,000 to 30,000 hours. Changes in aerodynamic design of the blades successfully concentrated the ash at the outer casing, but stepped sidewalls for the rotor drum and wear strips at the bases of the rotor blades are still needed to minimize wear at these points. Stepped sidewalls and wear strips did not adequately protect the stator blades. Ash slightly eroded their leading edges, above the inserts, and cut notches into their trailing edges near the bases. Stator blade life was estimated at 5,000 to 7,500 hours. Blade erosion in these tests was less severe than with previous designs, but more efficient combustors and ash separators are required to reduce the amount and size of ash entering the turbine, to achieve acceptable blade life for commercial operation.

This report describes the development and operation by the Bureau of Mines of a pilot plant designed for using high-volatile A bituminous coal-in-water suspensions as a source of preheated coal and superheated steam in the pressure gasification of coal with oxygen. Figure 1 on page 2 is a block diagram of the integrated gasification process, in which a total of 70 tons of coal was fed from slurry and gasified. The present work included (1) development of equipment and methods both for mixing pulverized coal and water to produce slurry and for pumping and metering the slurry at gasification pressure; (2) development of equipment for heating the flowing slurry and, because slurry that can be pumped produces more steam than is necessary as a gasification reactant, developing equipment for removing and metering the excess steam; and (3) demonstration of the process under actual gasifier operating conditions, at a coal rate of about 800 pounds per hour and gasification pressures in the range 100 to 300 pounds per square inch gage. By using the forced-convection principle, a flow of slurry made from a caking, high-volatile A bituminous coal can be continuously heated to 600° F. in a coil-type heater. The flow rate and concentration of the slurry and the temperature gradient along the length of the heating coil must be closely controlled. In a radiant-type heater, involuntary reductions in flow rate, even momentary, can lead to coking and plugging of the heater coil.

An investigation of coal deposits near Cerrillos Santa Fe County, N. Mex., was undertaken 14 the Bureau of Mines in 1943 as part of a general program to determine sources of metallurgical coal for western steel plants. Almost all of the coal used for metallurgical purposes west of the Continental Divide Is mined from the Lower Sunnyside bed in, Carbon County,, Utah. Coke used in western steel plants that is produced from Lower Sunnyside a coal is weaker, structurally, than coke used elsewhere in this country. For this reason, western coal operators and steel manufacturers are anxious to develop new areas of coking coal of better quality then the coal produced from the Sunnyside bed. The objective of investigations of western coals was to (a) develop additional reserves of coking coal to supplement proved reserves in the Sunnyside bed. and (b) develop; if possible, reserves of coal with coking quantities superior to those of Lower Sunnyside

The principal activities of the Bureau of Mines Explosives Research Center (now Safety Research Center) during fiscal year 1968 (July 1, 1967, to June 30, 1968) are reviewed in part 1. Part 2 presents short abstracts of the publications issued during this period in the Bureau series and in other media. Part 3 describes a short study on the thermal decomposition of RDX and HMX not destined for publication elsewhere. Flotation is the primary method for copper minerals separation from porphyry ores. The need to process difficult-to-float porphyry copper ores presents challenges to engineers and scientists in several areas. This paper is concerned with summarizing generalized problems faced in the processing of porphyry ores and treatment methods to overcome the specific problems. Though some of the problems are interrelated the problems have been classified into three broad catagories. The case studies of some of the successful applications of innovative methods to solve problems related to ore mineralogy, metallurgical aspects of ore treatment and process variables show that quite often the problems are solvable by a judicious choice of flotation variables.
