In January, 1922, a conference relative to trailing cables for use with permissible mining machines was held at the Pittsburgh Experiment Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines. At this conference it was recommended that the bureau take steps to investigate the rubber-sheathed type of cables and to bring about the establishment of a list of approved cables. Effective until such time as a complete investigation could be made, the bureau asked the several manufacturers holding approvals for mining machines to recommend cables for use with their machines. In general the cables recommended were tentatively approved. Due to the lack of available personnel, no actual tests of cables were made until mid-1927. Meanwhile a field investigation of trailing cables was made at 20 mines of three coal companies in western Pennsylvania, and samples of cables were obtained from the manufacturers for laboratory tests. Twenty-five samples of the concentric-type cable, representing the product of five manufacturers, were obtained for the tests. These cables were of four sizes, as follows: 3 cables of No. 2 B & S gage, 17 cables of No. 3 B & S gage, 3 cables of No. 4 B & S gage, and 2 cables of No. 6 B & S gage.

Soil cover systems are routinely used to reduce acid rock drainage (ARD) from mine waste rock dumps and tailings impoundments. A technology for the analysis, design, instrumentation and monitoring of barrier-type (oxygen limiting) and store/release-type covers has rapidly developed and the number of covers under construction has grown extensively during the past ten years. Mine operators are currently investing in this relatively new technology with the expectation that these covers will reduce long-term liability with respect to acid generation, drainage and treatment costs. While the design life for cover systems may extend into hundreds of years, we have less than ten years of construction experience and proven performance. Some cover designs appear to be functioning well; however, the performance of many more is now being called into question. The paper presented herein evaluates the integrity of cover systems from a global perspective. Soil cover systems for the control of ARD are being constructed at mine sites located within high rainfall equatorial regions, deserts ranging from low to high latitude, humid temperate regions, and cold-continental climates. While the technology for analysis and design of soil cover systems is well developed, factors that compromise the performance of cover systems (in addition to the paramount issue of climate) relate to material selection and availability, cost and construction practices. Long-term performance is also strongly affected by physical stability (ie erosion), volume change (ie cracking, desiccation, settlement and freeze/thaw cycling), vegetation, soil evolution and ecological stability. This paper provides a review of the application of soil cover systems for the control of ARD. Cases where cover systems have been constructed with both success and failure are illustrated. General criteria and recommendations for cover selection, design, construction, and maintenance are provided.

A SIMAN and CINEMA PC-based simulation model was developed to simulate and animate the truck-shovel operations of surface mines. The model is capable of simulating one mathematical dispatching strategy using linear and dynamic programming and six heuristic dispatching strategies. Data were collected from an actual operating mine through time studies and analysis of historical records. The statistical analyses were performed and appropriate theoretical distributions were fitted for various time events in the truck-shovel work cycle. The model was then applied to study overall impact of these dispatching strategies on constrained and unconstrained mine productivity. The simulation/animation model developed in this study seems to be an efficient planning tool for choosing optimal fleets and finding an 'optimal" dispatching strategy to produce an equilibrium between "the quality and quantity of production.

Measurement of the deformation of a borehole in rock subjected to a change in applied stress can be used to calculate the magnitude and direction of the applied stress, provided a satisfactory deformation-applied stress relationship exists , In this investigation by the Bureau of Mines the deformation of a bore- hole in a rock model subjected to a known applied stress was compared with the theoretical deformation of a hole in an elastic, isotropic plate and was found to be in good agreement. Hence, this relationship can be used to calculate the applied stress on a borehole from borehole deformation measurements.

"Surveying, and as a result, surveyors, have been around since the start of time, and it has been said that so has their methodology!The theodolite and tape have been the backbone of a time-tested practice that has led to ground breaking advancements such as electronic distance measurement (EDM), global positioning system (GPS) and positional laser scanning. However, it was the introduction of the unmanned aerial system (UAS) that has allowed mine sites such as St Ives to take the next step towards truly turning survey data into metadata.This paper will explain how the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) was adapted to meet the requirements of a mine site supporting a major open pit operation, and how the open pit mining team adjusted their planning and production processes to maximise use of the extra data and information available to them.The advantages of the system include point cloud surveys with corresponding large-scale up-to-date photography and computer generated high detail contouring of mined areas that are then incorporated into the mine plan. All the while, the use of the UAV must be tailored to each specific problem encountered and a solution then matched.Citation:Steven, R, 2016. "Establishing ventilation in the early stages of a new mine is an essential step to achieve scheduled outcomes that ultimately drive the financial success of an operation. If the primary ventilation is not in place in time to support a contractorÆs work output, then the ore delivery is likely to be severely impacted. Options to increase ventilation in order to address shortfalls are limited. This in turn can lead to reduced revenue generation at a time when a mine is at its highest capital outlay. This can have implications for any company, but even more for an explorer moving to producer. The ventilation put in place to cover the start-up period is also unlikely to cover any extended or increased load required to meet schedule delays.The following paper examines two issues in relation to ventilation with a focus on small to medium projects where the company is establishing a mine using a mining contractor. The issues being: potential impacts on the contract and tender process when using a mining contractor key mine design considerations, such as æcrunch timeÆ, as they interact with ventilation achieving a successful ramp up.A recommendation is made for higher levels of detail around secondary ventilation leading up to the primary fan installation. The information should be included as part of the tendering process and preliminary project execution planning. Understanding the æcrunch timeÆ concept can lead to strategies, as well as back up plans, to minimise any negative impact.By understanding key risks around primary ventilation establishment for a new mine, detailed design work can be completed where it is needed most. Value is added by reducing uncertainty and a payback with better contract terms and a more robust ramp up plan. ROASTING is usually thought of as a process in which finely crushed or ground ore is heated with air in a suitable furnace in which the ore is rabbled or agitated in such a way as to insure complete reaction between the oxygen of the air and the oxidisable constituents of the ore. Roasting in this sense is used only to a very limited extent in the iron and steel industry. This is because, in most iron ore deposits mined today, the ore is of a type that does not require roasting. Where this process is used, it is usually because of some special circumstance, such as a peculiar economic condition, that warrants it. If roasting is looked upon in the broader sense as a gas-solid chemical reaction carried out at an elevated temperature in which both gaseous and solid products are formed, then the process is used in the iron and steel industry to a greater extent

"The wash ore area on the Mesabi iron range covers a regionof the iron bearing formation extending from Grand Rapids on the west to the Hibbing district, about forty miles eastward. Not all of the developed ore bodies are of wash structure; some are of such grades that they can be shipped direct as merchants able ore. It is safe to say, however, that 65 per cent of the ore is of a possible wash structure and of too high a silica content to be classified as merchantable ore. The increase in the number of washing plants completed each year on the western Mesabi shows that ,the product must be of a structure desirable for furnace operation. The purpose of this paper is to describe a stochastic simulation program used to assess several dispatching rules applicable to small scale computerized systems for optimizing truck/shovel productivity. The system studied is semi-automated with a dispatcher communicating instructions by two-way radio. The simulation program is structured on an advance clock approach which enables the insertion of dispatching rules at various points in the haulage net- work. The rules tested include minimize shovel idle time, maximizing immediate truck use and assigning trucks to shovels to meet specific production objectives. A variation of the traditional "Match Factor" is implemented to maintain fleet balance throughout the shift. A mine case study demonstrates how the dispatching rules increase productivity of such semi-automated dispatching systems. Practical problems involved in the implementation of small computerized dispatching systems are also discussed.

This paper describes a proposed solution to the problem of mining a 315 foot diameter unsupported sphere at a depth of 2700 feet in a salt dome by conventional mining methods. The proposed solution utilizes many of the varied technologies available to the mining engineer for solving mining and underground construction problems. The following are reviewed in the paper: A. The location of the sphere within the dome as required by construction criteria. B. The relation of the location of the access shafts to the sphere. C. The rock mechanics theory in relation to the salt dome and large size of the excavation. D. The proposed "honeycomb" method of mining which will be a partial answer to rock mechanics stability requirements. E. The equipment which it is recommended be utilized to accomplish the construction. F. The rock mechanics measuring instruments proposed. G. The methods of disposal of the mined salt. Conclusions and areas of further study are outlined in the final statement.

How to obtain optimum slope angles for future open pit mines using the rock mechanics approach is the subject of this paper. In the past ten years significant developments in open pit rock mechanics have come about. This has been due to the mining industry's need for the steepest, yet safe, pit slope angles attainable. Requirements for economically achieving slope stability and the actual payoff that may be achieved through stability studies have been previously discussed', by stability engineers. While the emphasis has generally been placed on the concept of "stable slopes" in the past, it is suggested that emphasis now be placed on "optimum slopes" or "optimum slope angles". A definition of an optimum slope angle is one which (1) is as steep as possible and practical from orebody and mining constraint standpoints and yet, (2) maintains the accepted standard of safety defined by a safety factor against failure and/or a probability of failure. In other words, the emphasis is placed on achieving practical stability results as defined by safety and economic considerations, as opposed to simply achieving stability. The essential purposes of this paper are to (1) outline the need for optimum slope angles, (2) discuss the procedures for using the rock mechanics approach in slope angle design for a future open pit and (3) specify the end results that may be achieved by using such an approach. While the basic concepts and recommendations outlined in this paper may be equally applicable to soil as well as rock slopes, the emphasis and procedures have been directed at rock slope angle design.

The principal objective of this investigation was to conduct a thorough literature review on the status of project readiness mechanisms, tools, techniques, and frameworks for mining projects. The review aimed at identifying common readiness evaluation criteria as well as potential shortcomings that prevent the establishment of a generalizable project readiness index. The literature review included a general overview of capital project performances and the importance of project readiness assessments to improve project delivery success. The study then progressed towards literature involving mining projects and how this differs from infrastructure and industrial project assessments. The paper concludes by summarizing the current state of mining project readiness assessments, the unique and differentiating factors to be considered, and suggests recommendations towards the development of generalizable readiness assessment criteria for mining projects.

"Coal-fired electrical power generation plants produce 56% of all the electricity in the U.S., burning approximately 860 million tons of coal annually. This results in the production of 58 million tons of fly-ash; 19 million tons of bottom ash and boiler slag, and 23 million tons of desulfurization sludge.s annually. These are a considerable disposal problem, and it would therefore be very valuable to be able to sell these residues and by-products as useful materials, rather than paying to dispose of them in landfills. However, utilization rates are currently very low, below 32% even for the most thoroughly commercialized combustion byproduct (fly-ash). This poor utilization rate is a result of the high impurity content of combustion byproducts, which makes them unsuitable for existing markets.Mineral processing techniques are useful for upgrading and utilizing combustion by-products. Fly-ash can be processed to remove unburned carbon, or utilized as a binder component in ore pelletization and agglomeration processes; bottom ash can be processed to produce certain aggregate grades; CO2 emissions can be sequestered using modified leaching techniques; and many scrubber sludge’s require processing before they can be used for producing gypsum products.The experiments described in this paper were carried out to study the application of mineral processing techniques to upgrading combustion by-products, particularly flue-gas scrubber sludge. A process was developed for upgrading unoxidized Flue-Gas Desulfurization (FGD) sludge’s by removing the primary impurity (unreacted limestone). A combination of hydrocycloning followed by froth flotation reduced the limestone concentration to as little as 1.7%, while recovering 66% of the sludge weight as a clean product. The recovered limestone was sufficiently concentrated that it could be recycled to the scrubber for more complete utilization."

There is increasing demand for geotechnical contractors to commit to carbon reduction, net zero or science based targets. A lot of focus has therefore been placed on using low carbon materials and low emission rigs. However, whilst these are ways to help reduce carbon, there is a need to look beyond just substituting materials and fuels to meet net zero. Using the IEMA carbon hierarchy, there is a need to first look at eliminating and reducing emissions, before considering substitute materials. For example, in geotechnical designs, this may mean considering using ground improvement or reducing the number of piles, before considering using low carbon cements. Equally, for remaining emissions, this hierarchy means considering carbon negative products to offset emissions, such as ground source heat pumps. This hierarchy can also be applied throughout geotechnical contractor organisations. For example, considering video conferencing for meetings, before considering public transport or using an electric vehicle. This article explores the carbon hierarchy and how it can be applied to all areas of a geotechnical contractor’s business. Only through embedding this hierarchy across the business can geotechnical contractors achieve the step change required to meet net zero.

The Morning Star Gold Mine presents an example of a prolific operation with considerable historical records, mine workings, drill hole logs and countless plans from greater than 20 adjacent mines which have now been consolidated to form the current project. Implementation of 3D computer modelling in the planning stages has provided an additional tool to integrate and refine geological models as a guide to some exploration strategies. It has allowed for a re- interpretation of the host rock units, dimensional constraints, new exploration extensions and provisional resource modelling. The initial consideration of this project was to integrate 135 years of mining history into a single database. Each historic mining area had an unrelated mine grid, often established parallel to the long axis of their main stopes; some were based on magnetic or true north. Survey plans were in chain, imperial or metric units. Through the manipulation and rotation of old grids, previously unrelated mine workings began to form continuous mineralised zones, with unmined portions still remaining in between the existing development. Furthermore the current drillhole database of >433 holes showed numerous confirmatory intersections of new mineralisation. A series of tiered tables were created within a relational database to derive guidelines for assessing data to attribute a Mineral Prospectivity Value [MPV] based on key indicators of mineralisation. Indicator logging now forms the basis of geological descriptions.

Preliminary investigations of stone resources were conducted in the La Range, Johnson Lake-Pelican Narrows-Deschambault Lake and Creighton-Amisk Lake regions of Saskatchewan. The work identified a rich variety of accessible, attractive and technically promising stone resources. Ordovician dolomites in various combinations of red, buff, yellow, grey and purple are very dense and take a very good polish. These are classified as marbles in the industry and some rival the famous marbles of Verona, Italy. A wide variety of attractive granites have been identified. Among these is a jade green stone (charnockite) and ornamental banded granites (gneisses). A dark greenish to black stone (amphibolite) with white and red veining resembles the well-known Verde Antique variety of Vermont and Italy and surpasses it aesthetically and in engineering properties. Some of these stones have been displayed at Canadian and United States expositions where they received an enthusiastic response from the international stone industry. More detailed evaluation and test quarrying of promising deposits are required. Such work could be rewarding to the industry as some stone varieties in the province have the potential for gaining international markets.

Backfilling material such as tailing (mine wastes) mixing with cement or gypsum has grown throughout the world’s underground mines. However, despite their growing popularity, the typical hydraulic and mechanical fill types utilized in many mines still exist. Deep underground mining has increased due to the lack of commercial minerals nearby. Mine wastes were considered the main part of backfilling to prevent environmental pollution, ground subsidence after mine abandonment, and mine collapse during deeper extraction phases. The cemented backfill technique is the principal technique used in underground mines, which include cement with fly ash and/or filter dust, cement with tailing material and fly ash, gypsum with fly ash, and synthetic anhydrite with fly ash and have been reviewed. It has concluded that a backfilling material must be selected based on further goals, available material near the mine site, and economic factors. This paper analyzes different backfill material mixtures to create a technique that will increase safety in underground mining conditions and foresees an appropriate formula that gives high uniaxial compressive strength. The multiple linear regression (MLR) on the collected data from the experimental works to construct the relationship between the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) of the mixture and the components of the backfilling and the prediction formula for expected compressive strength was obtained. The results revealed that the predicted regression equation was robust and reliable to predict the (UCS) for the new components of the filling (cement (CE), filter dust (FD), water content (WC), and time (T)).

The following report is made through the Bureau of Mines as a result of the work under the cooperative agreement with the State geological survey and the engineering experiment station of the University of Illinois. It deals with the use of permissible explosives in the coal mines of Illinois, and is intended primarily to present to mining men the possibility of assuring safer conditions in mining through the use of these explosives. Twenty coal mines in Illinois were using these relatively safe explosives at the time this report was prepared. Of these, seventeen were in Franklin County, two were in Saline County, and one in Montgomery County. In these various fields experience had shown that although black blasting powder was a useful agent in breaking down the coal at the working face, yet it had given such conclusive evidence of its danger to life and property in causing explosions and mine fires that a substitute was sought and has been found in permissible explosives. Each coal mine in Illinois in which permissible explosives are used was visited and a study made of the problems involved. The report deals briefly with the dangers of black blasting powder now in such common use in coal mining. It discusses the development of permissible explosives and their introduction into Illinois coal mines and points out the characteristic differences between permissible explosives and black blasting powder. The present system of blasting and the most approved methods of using permissible explosives are described. Data are given to show that not only has safety and efficiency in these mines been greatly improved, but that the cost of explosives to the miner per ton of coal has been reduced, and that sizes of coal produced from permissible explosives compare favorably with those previously obtained at the same mines with black blasting powder. The successful use of permissible explosives in these Illinois mines as well as in many other mines throughout the country should aid in their introduction into a larger number of mines and bring about that degree of freedom from explosions and fires which should be attained in mining.

This report reviews the phosphate deposits, mines, and industry, and prospects in 10 districts covering most of the Montana phosphate field. These districts are discussed individually, and an evaluation of the resources and potential of each is presented. Phosphate rock produced from underground mines in the Garrison district is shipped to Canada for processing to fertilizers, utilized locally for production of animal feed supplement, and pulverized and sold for direct application to the soil. Production from the Melrose district is shipped to Silver Bow and processed to elemental phosphorus. The Maxville-Philipsburg district is destined to become a major producer with the development of the Douglas Creek mine and beneficiation plant by Montana Phosphate Products Co. Montana ranks fourth after Florida, Tennessee, and Idaho in total annual production in the United States. Production him increased from about 60,000 long tons of acid-grade phosphate rock in 1940 to more than 660,000 tons of acid-, beneficiation-, and furnace-grade ore in 1961. Montana has the second largest potential resources in the Western field; in the area south of Butte there are approximately 1.2 billion tons of phosphate rock (+18 to +31 pct P2O5) available above and within 100 feet below entry level; and in the northern part of the field there are about 67.6 million tons available above entry level. In contrast to Idaho, most of the phosphate deposits in Montana are best suited to underground mining.
