Much has been written about the fact that most transformation efforts disappoint. This paper addresses factors that should be taken into consideration in planning and implementing transformation programs to ensure success.In 2009, St Barbara commenced a transformation program to address issues of chronic poor quarterly operational performance; financial pressure caused by the unreliable operational performance; and an inability to develop business plans with integrity and to reliably deliver on the plans. As a result of a number of years of disappointing operational performance, St BarbaraÆs culture was not conducive to business success.This paper uses lessons learnt during St BarbaraÆs transformation program to highlight key characteristics of change programs that can generate significant sustainable benefits. While there were many benefits from the transformation program, the most significant impacts of St BarbaraÆs program have been transformation of the companyÆs culture and capability of people as business leaders; the establishment of a business systems framework to guide the design and development of systems; and developing support functions, for example centralised procurement and supply chain, business improvement and technical services.CITATION:Campbell-Cowan, G, 2012. "After a study on the advantages and disadvantages of flotation column, according to the limitation of ordinary flotation column only is used for a flotation of microgranular minerals, the paper designed a new kind of layered convection coarse particle flotation column.Using a bauxite to test the rationality of the flotation column.The test results show that the new layered convection coarse particle flotation column is feasible.It has certain advantages about coarse particles flotation.INTRODUCTIONFlotation column has many advantages, for example,a simple structure, high efficiency and energy saving, the obvious advantage of fine particles flotation , the index superior and so on. The advantages gradually getting people's recognition. Research of flotation column has been a breakthrough, however, due to it only is used for the flotation of microgranular minerals, and the microgranular mineral particles will lead to a series of problems, and makes the processing cost is increased. Due to increase grinding fineness can save the grinding time and reduce the cost of grinding, also can avoid the disadvantage of fairly granular mineral particles cause a deterioration in the flotation. Flotation is the dominant base metal extraction technique and it requires ore to be ground below the liberation size for effective recovery due to its dependence on mineral surface properties. For a poly-metallic ore, differential hardness of constituent minerals leads to over grinding of softer minerals before the harder minerals are fully liberated, which makes selection of a target grind size complex, and the complexity increases when treating leaner ores. Flotation recovery deteriorates above 100 and below 10 microns causing significant loses of valuable minerals in most flotation circuits. Although enhanced gravity concentration is known to be effective at recovering particles above 100 microns, which are difficult to hydro-dynamically transport, exploiting differential specific gravity for base metal separation was not an option in the past. This was partly due to the absence of high mass yield gravity techniques. The advent of continuous gravity concentrators with flexible mass yields, in the past two decades, has necessitated investigation of possible base metal applications. The Knelson CVD, one of the continuous discharge centrifugal concentrators, has an established application niche for sulphides associated with gold. However, its base metal applications have never been rigorously tested. Considering the dependence of flotation recovery on particle size, continuous discharge centrifugal concentration can be integrated in flotation circuits to capture flotation non-recoverable coarse particles. This paper explores how particle size, liberation and mineral hardness influence application of continuous centrifugal technology to regulate galena deportment in a polymetallic base metal plant. The results show that particle size affects galena recovery more than liberation. In view of these results, the CVD can be integrated in the primary grinding circuit to pre-concentrate the heavy sulphides at a coarser grind size with potential grinding energy savings.

Development of a global failure criterion for rocks has been a desired goal in rock mechanics. Due to variations in factors affecting rock specifications and their mechanical properties, proposing a single failure criterion suitable for all rock types has proven to be unachievable. The theoretical failure criteria do not fit the real data correctly. Amongst empirical criteria, the Bieniawski criterion has demonstrated an acceptable agreement with laboratory generated data. It has been experienced that the ability to estimate rock strength via the modified form of this criterion is significantly improved. Based on the modified Bieniawski criterion and using VB.net, an associated Microsoft Windows program named 'RAMOCE' has been developed. The inputs of RAMOCE can be triaxial compressive strength data, Bieniawski parameters of a specific rock or the type of given rock. Based on input data, potential outputs of the program are Bieniawski's rock parameters, sensitivity analysis of the effective parameters, rock failure prediction and defining the type of given rock.

There was a large reserve of bauxite resources in China. And these resources were mainly the dias-pore-bauxite and contained plenty of aluminosilicate including kaolinite, illite and pyrophyllite. Reducing the contents of aluminosilicate would be significant to the using of Chinese bauxite resources. In this paper, from the single mineral flotation experiments, the surface properties and flotation beha-viours of aluminosilicate including kaolinite, illite and pyrophyllite, using dodecyl amine (DDA), N, N-dimethyl-dodecyl amine (DRN12) and N-dodecyl-1, 3-propane diamine (DN12) as collectors, had been investigated. The flotation results shown that the flotation behaviours of aluminosilicate had been influenced greatly by three amine collectors; and the effect was in the order of DN12>DRN12 >DDA. On the basis of FT-IR spectra and zeta potential measurements, the ionization of surface hydroxyl, as well as isomorphic exchange of surface ions, accounted for the mineral surface charges. And the mechanisms of interactions between the mineral surface and collectors mainly included two modes: electrostatic adsorption and hydrogen bonding; for the DDA and DRN>DDA. 12, the mechanism was mainly electrostatic adsorption; and for the DN12, the mechanisms of electrostatic adsorption and hydrogen bonding both existed. Results of quantum chemistry research shown that the collecting ability of amine collectors was greatly influenced by the electro-negativity of N in the amine molecules; and The |E(EHOMO| and ?E (HOMO-ELUMO) of N atom in DRN12 and DN12 were lower than that of DDA, and the positive charge of ?N group in DRN12 and DA12 were higher than that of DDA. All these calculation results could explain the collecting power of DN12>DRN12>DDA.

In this paper, autogenous grinding is defined as the combined crushing and grinder of a run-of-mine ore or the product from a primary crusher, in a single stage grinding mill. This is in contrast to pebble milling where pebbles are substituted for steel balls to grind a ball mill size feed. The autogenous mill to compete in efficiency with normal methods of crushing and grinding must not use greater power, must use less labor and steel, and must produce an equivalent product.

The transport of slurry within the ball mill depends on the peripheral velocity and porosity of the ball charge. Residence time distribution and mill hold up are of-ten used as indicators of the mode of transport. In this work, the transport problem is tackled via direct simulation of the three dimensional motion of the ball charge. In doing so, the following quantities are calculated: (i) ball size distribution as a function of the distance from the feed end of the mill (ii) mean peripheral and longitudinal velocity and longitudinal velocity of balls of different sizes, and (iii) the spatial distribution of porosity within the ball charge. Hence, the problem of transport is handled as a motion of part of the slurry with the ball charge and part as hydrodynamic flow through the porous structure.

"As hydraulic fracturing is forbidden in some countries due to its accompanying environmental pollutions, microwave fracturing was proposed as a substitute technology to enhance coal seam permeability. Its mechanism includes: on the one hand, thermal stress caused by non-uniform microwave heating leads to fracture development in coal body, which increases coal seam permeability for gas; on the other hand, moisture within the coal body that hinders gas desorption and diffusion is removed during this process. To study the effect of moisture content on fracture development under microwave irradiation, high resolution photographs were taken before and after microwave treatment. These photographs were then binarized and skeletonized. Based on the processed photographs, the total area were calculated using ImageJ. The results showed that coal samples with 0% and 25% water saturation have more variation in fracture development as compared to that of samples with 50%, 75% and 100% water saturation. This study can be very useful in gas drainage and gas control in coal mines. INTRODUCTION Coalbed methane (CBM) is a clean energy source as well as a natural hazard to underground mining (Kurnia, Sasmito, & Mujumdar, 2014; Ranathunga, Perera, & Ranjith, 2014). One of the main goals of mine ventilation is diluting methane and removing underground contaminants (Xu, Huang, Nie, Chalmers, & Yang, 2017). Coalbed methane (CBM) has to be extracted prior and during underground mining to avoid methane outburst and explosion accidents. However, with the increase of mining depth, the coal permeability decreases significantly, which makes it hard to extract the methane (Huang, Xu, Hu, Kizil, & Chen, 2018). To enhance the coal seam permeability, many CBM recovery methods have been applied on-site, such as hydraulic fracturing and enhanced coalbed methane (ECBM). However, hydraulic fracturing is restricted due to environmental concerns and ECBM is only suitable for the coal seam with relative large permeability (Bustin, Bustin, Chikatamarla, Downey, & Mansoori, 2016; Huang, Xu, Chen, & Chen, 2018; Huang, Xu, Hu, et al., 2018)."

Few issues pose quite as profound consequences to the quality of life and the creation and distribution of wealth as how we protect the natural environment. No longer a peripheral but a global concern, the environment, once almost nobody's business, has now become everybody's business. It is also the single biggest issue facing mining and mineral activities. This heightened ecological awareness and sensitivity have spawned a new commitment to restore, protect, and preserve nature. But that very commitment poses difficult socio-economic trade-offs, such as: What and how many resources can be given up to prevent and reduce pollution? What are the opportunity costs associated with meeting higher environmental standards? What problems are more important or pressing than others and should be given priority? Choices have to be made that may entail unintended consequences for other societal goals.

Gravity concentration at the Pegasus Gold Montana Tunnels Mine was initiated in late June, 1991 with the commissioning of a coarse gold scalping circuit that processes a small portion of the ball mill circulating load. The primary objective for the circuit was to reduce the risk of gold particles advancing to flotation that are too coarse to float. The secondary objective was to enhance overall gold recovery and payable gold ounces in a cost effective manner. The gravity circuit has proven itself to be a major success. The above mentioned goals have been achieved, and they have been maintained at record throughput rates that are 30% higher than when the circuit was commissioned. A number of modifications and improvements were made over the last three years which allowed the gravity circuit to keep pace with the higher tonnage, these are discussed in detail in the body of this paper. The overall approach to gravity concentration at Montana Tunnels has always been to optimize production rather than maximize the gold ounces produced. This philosophy has now yielded a circuit expansion and relocation project which will allow for an estimated 50% increase in gravity gold production, while reducing the overall unit costs of production significantly. This paper will review historical gravity circuit performance, improvements, and the current relocation and expansion project.

Rare earth elements (REEs) are critical materials in many leading-edge technology products. However, REE separation outside China has remained a challenge in addressing environmental concerns of current production. The author has worked on a technique employing the emphasised variability in the electrophoretic mobility (μi) of REE for the purpose of REE separation. In continuation of the results presented in IMPC 2016 [1], this contribution summarizes the progress achieved in 2016 and 2017. The major goal was to increase the REEs concentration by a factor of 1000 and to attenuate the consequent drawbacks, specifically joule heating effect. Amphiprotic hydroxylic solvent was selected to replace water, which has a major impact on the complexation mechanism and buffer requirement. Non-aqueous media result in a significant drop in the specific molar conductivity of the electrolyte, whilst μi reduces several times only. Moreover, a quasi-steady state electrophoretic separation in conjunction with temperature gradient focusing is adapted to improve scalability.

A number of relatively recent factors associated with the design of new metallurgical processing plants have made the effective training of operators a requirement for a successful start-up. Some of these factors include large capital investment in a minimum of processing lines, highly complex process control systems, and stringent regulations on plant effluent, to name a few. More than ever, operating mistakes during the start-up phase can lead to substantial delays in achieving design production, as well as problems with government authorities if permit limits are exceeded. The only way to assure your return on plant investment is to ensure new plant operators have the knowledge to properly run the plant from the outset. A comprehensive set of operating manuals specifically targeted for plant operators and foreman, written by experienced operating personnel, is the only effective way to provide the necessary information for start-up-related training.

"In mineral processing, it is often very difficult to reliably measure several key operation variables. The harsh environment and high temperature encountered in pyrometallurgy processes lead to some difficulties when selecting the instruments, valves and actuators. If an important variable cannot be measured or manipulated adequately, controlling it can really become a big challenge. Sometimes, it is simply impossible to find the perfect equipment for the task. To help overcome these difficulties, a different approach is required. This approach will not correct the inherent problems related to the instruments and valves, but will cope with these problems. This article will demonstrate how modern process control techniques can be used to solve complex problems while remaining easy to implement. In this article we will described how soft sensors and multivariable fuzzy logic control were implemented at Koniambo Nickel to stabilize the furnace feed and allow for safe and reliable operation of an 80 MW DC arc furnace.INTRODUCTION Process Overview The process plant at Koniambo Nickel SAS is located in the North Province of New Caledonia, 310 km north of Noumea. The nickel-bearing ore is mined in the nearby Koniambo massif. After being screened and crushed, the ore is transported to the processing plant using a 12 km conveyor. After stacking in two blending piles, the ore, containing 2.3% nickel, is fed to the processing plant where it will go through the NST process (Nickel Smelting Technology) before being sent to refining and shotting. This article will focus on the improvement to control of the NST processes. The first steps of this process consist of milling the ore and removing all moisture through calcining (Figure 1)."

Summary Statement The following notes on the geology of the Grand Lake coalfield are intended to be introductory to a second paper being read at this meeting, which paper will describe the earlier and the more modern mining methods. The coal industry of the Grand Lake coalfield is centred chiefly within a three-mile radius of Minto, but minor operations are dotted over an area of approximately 50 square miles extending easterly to the vicinity of Chipman and Coal Creek (see Figure 1). The coal comes from one seam of Pennsylvanian age. The seam varies in thickness from 16 to 30 inches and lies almost horizontal at depths of 0 to 125 feet. It has been mined and prospected over an area of approximately 150 square miles, but in a portion of this area the commercial possibilities have been destroyed by erosion. The industry is the oldest of its kind in North America, but it did not at tract particular publicity until about 1914. Since that date, mining methods have improved and the output has rapidly increased until, in 1934, it amounted to 271,335 long tons, and furnished employment for about 1,000 men (1). Approximately 73 percent of this amount was produced by the Minto Coal Company, the Miramichi Lumber Company, the Avon Coal Company, and Welton and Henderson, and 25 per cent by the Rothwell Coal Company, Harvey Welton Limited, G. H. King, the Reade Construction Company, and the Newcastle Coal Company. The remainder was produced by J. W. Carter, G. D. Crossman, T. H. Swift, C. S. Yeamans, and several other small operators. The coal is won by underground mining, except in the case of the Reade Construction Company, and a minor operation by Ashfield and Pieton, who have employed open stripping. It is mined only as required to fill definite orders, and is loaded directly into cars for shipment. In 1934, the larger mines did not operate full time, and the production could easily have been increased if markets had been available. The coal is sold in four grades: screened or lump, run of mine, slack, and stripping. The chief market is with the railways and commercial plants, with a fair amount for domestic purposes.

Pressure maintenance by water flooding in the Pembina Field made consideration of wet crude dehydration and disposal of the produced water mandatory. Crude dehydration, the treatment and disposal of produced water, as well as the sale of gas and crude oil were expected to be handled more efficiently at one central point than at several conventional batteries. This plan was effected by routing the produced fluids to the central station by way of several well testing batteries referred to as satellites. To realize the full efficiency inherent in such consolidation the entire system was made self-regulating. Programming ensures the testing and proper routing of all products to their destination. Forty producing wells have been self-operated during the winter 1959 -1960 with gratifying results.

Production targets are the basis for almost every decision made by operations personnel in the daily operation of a concentrator. It is the production targets that determine how the plant is operated and therefore determine its efficiency. However, to achieve maximum plant efficiency production targets must be relevant to the process and achievable.In RoseberyÆs case, for many years, production targets were taken from budget data which, with the exception of mill feed tonnes and grades were carried forward from the previous budget. The zinc concentrate grade target was fixed at 57 per cent Zn, a long-term average; it was the accepted æstandardÆ for Rosebery. Historical data showed this target was never consistently achieved and plant efficiency was highly variable.Investigations into the possible causes for the variable performance ruled out plant and mechanical issues. Despite the Rosebery concentratorÆs age the plant and equipment are more than serviceable and reliable. The mineralogy of the ore and specifically the iron content of the sphalerite was found to be the most significant determinant of zinc concentrate grade. It was found with increasing frequency that the zinc grade of the sphalerite in the ore was below the zinc concentrate grade target. Consequently on these occasions attempts to meet the required concentrate target destabilised the process resulting in plant inefficiencies.Using the correlation between iron and zinc, data modelling was able to accurately predict the maximum zinc concentrate grade achievable for any ore type. By using on stream analysis instrumentation the operations personnel are now provided with constantly updated concentrate grade targets. By knowing the mineralogical limits of the ore at the time it is being treated process stability is maintained allowing plant efficiency to be optimised. This has resulted in a step change in plant performance and a significant increase in revenue.CITATION:Harris, G R, 2012. A 16.5-kt/day underground molybdenum mine is being developed at Questa in Northern New Mexico by Molycorp, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Union Oil Company of California. Construction of the underground mine began in 1979, and first production is scheduled for early 1983. A gravity block caving method has been selected for mining the ore. Access to the mine will be through a service shaft, development shaft, and a conveyor decline. The shafts are being sunk under contract and the conveyor decline is being driven by Molycorp. The driving of the decline began in February, 1979 with a 10-man mining class. By the first of May, enough men had been trained to begin a continuous operation and by March 1, 1980 the face had reached the 1500 m mark. The heading is being driven with trackless rubber-tired equipment using a three-boom drill jumbo, 2.7 m3 LHD units and 7.3 m3 trucks. Ground support has been by rock bolts and wire mesh, followed by Fibercrete. A 16.5-kt/d underground molybdenum mine is being developed at Questa in northern New Mexico by Molycorp, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Union Oil Company of California. The new $200-million underground project will revitalize mining and milling activity at Questa, where small scale underground mining first began in 1920. Large scale open-pit mining was initiated in 1965 but now, because of the high stripping ratio, surface mining is being phased out. Construction of the underground mine began in 1979, and first production is scheduled for early 1983. The company expects full capacity - 9 Gg of molybdenum per year - to be reached in 1984.

The simulation study on the process of iron ore beneficiation plant of Essar Steel, Kirandul was carried out. The iron ore fines and slimes generated nearby Bailadila mines of NMDC are used as raw materials for this beneficiation plant. The capacity of the plant is 1400 TPH operating in parallel in two streams. The capacity of the plant was utilized about 60% of throughput capacity. To improve the plant capacity as well as quality performance, the simulation study was conducted to detect the bottleneck of the process. The process samples were collected from input and output of each processing unit operation to generate the data base for simulation study at the feed rate of 400 and 500 TPH of iron ore fines in a single stream. The characteristics data i.e., breakage and selection functions were generated using MILLSOFT package for simulation of ball mills. Then MODSIM package was used to evaluate the performance of each unit operation to identify the bottleneck. It was established by a simulation study that the intermediate thickener draws high current when the feed rate is more than 400 TPH due to high torque drawn by rotating rake because of presence of coarse particles in the input stream to thickener. The problem was sorted out by classification of input stream of thickener to remove the coarse particles. Then the process was simulated at its rated capacity, and experimental validation studies at the plant were also conducted at the feed capacity of 600 and 700 TPH by modification of process flowsheet. The experimental data was almost matching with simulated data. Finally, the processing plant is running with full rated capacity without any bottleneck. The productivity index of the Coopracarcegua Ltda., a mid-size coal mining company of Norte de Santander, Colombia, was related absenteeism using accident, productivity and profit data four years. The analysis was based on type, severity and frequency of accidents, number of absentee days; price per metric ton, and other relevant parameters. The enterprise is formed by 5 different mines of thermic coal, each one with different exploitation technologies and different productivity. Each mine was analysed separately and the loss of profit due to absenteeism was calculate for each one. The study showed that the foregone earnings due to absenteeism in terms of the whole productivity of the enterprise was about of 6.6% of the total profit average the 4 years, with calculated values of 14.7%, 3.5%, 8.4% and 4% per year in the evaluated period. The study identified that the most important cause of absenteeism was "General Disease". The foregone earnings in 2009, the highest loss for the analysed period, was about US$ 0.937 million and during the whole evaluated period was US$ 2.46 million.

Nowadays in Brazil the final disposal for spent batteries include sanitary and industrial landfill for hazardous waste from domestic waste and industrial waste respectively. The problems of environmental impact caused by spent batteries had been discussed of several years, considering the fact of metals contents, like Cd, Hg, Pb and Zn. Some techniques are been proposed for recycling this type of waste in order to protect the environment while bringing also economic advantages of recovering metals. The reclamation of metals from secondary raw materials had been employed and further applications of this flexible technology are planned to the future. The processing of metals solutions involving hydrometallurgical techniques is an efficient method for recovering metals, since it provides completely recovery of metals with low energy requirements. This paper discusses the spent alkalline batteries characterization and leaching stage experiments results with sulphuric acid as leachant. After batteries dismantling by mineral processing techniques, the black powder sample produced was submitted to diffraction X-ray characterization and atomic absorption spectrophotometry in order to verify all the substances presented. Some experiments were carried on to develop a hydrometallurgical process for initial metal recovery aiming to get Zn into a soluble form on aqueous solution in order to propose the next stages of purification and recovering Zn, as electroplated deposition. The sulphuric acid was chosen not only for being cheaper than other leachants but also for improving the extraction of soluble Zn as ZnS04 form at diluted acid concentration. Batch laboratory experiments leaching procedure were conducted to determine appropriate leaching conditions from the viewpoint of maximize zinc extraction. In these tests an amount of dry powder batteries was added to different acid concentrations and solid/liquid ratio and after leaching and filtration the aqueous solutions were submitted to atomic absorption spectrophotometry analysis to verify the Zn content.
