Due to special job or client requirements, there will always be some variation in the philosophy of organizing and controlling construction under a project management contract. In typical cases, however, some standard procedures apply. Controls on a construction project are best described only in general terms. They should apply to the total job and can be most effective only when all pieces of the job organization fit together to support a control system for the entire project. Controls are more than a system of reports, schedules, and tabulations-they are the result of an integrated organization dedicated to getting a job done on time and within budget. One of the most important aspects of project control is the construction organization. It must include the right people, facilities, and site equipment, as well as the authority to do what's necessary to accomplish the work. This should be set up to function with as little involvement from off-site or the home office as possible. However, the jobsite construction group must work within established policies and guidelines and is subject to continuous off-site or home office monitoring. In other words, the job-site leaders need to have a clear definition of their responsibility, their authority, and the necessary people and equipment to make things happen. The Raymond Memorial Volume, which the Members of the In-stitute have been so anxiously awaiting since the beloved man's death, is nearly ready for publication. It will contain about 45,000 words and some illustrations and a frontispiece portrait. This book promises to fill every expectation of the contributors to the volume and the host of admirers of the genius who so long guided the destiny of the Institute. It will contain one of Doctor Raymond's best stories, entitled "James and Jim;" his famous article on "Job on Mining;" and one of his poems entitled "The Grand Canyon." A biography of Doctor Raymond has been written by his daughter, who is the wife of a member of the Institute. The memorial addresses delivered by Dr. Henry F. Drinker and T. A. Rickard at the annual meeting in New York in 1919 will be included. There will also be very interesting reminiscences by H. M. Howe, A. S. Dwight, C. W. Goodale, R. W. Hunt, Lyman Abbott, J. F. hemp, T. A. Rickard. The volume has been edited by T. A. Rickard, which promises all that can be wished for the volume from a literary standpoint. The edition will he limited so that it is very desirable that orders for this volume be sent in to the Institute as promptly as possible. The price will be $5.00.

The paper addresses the application of XPAC AutoScheduler at the Fort Hills Energy Oil Sands Project to complete fast turn around ?what if? scenario testing of different mine schedules. Traditional scheduling approaches involve engineers making a ?best guess? at the required mining sequence, loading this sequence into a scheduling package and testing the results to determine if the schedule meets corporate objectives. This process is iterative and can be very time consuming. Autoscheduling techniques, on the other hand, are based on the engineer pre defining the mining rules and constraints of the deposit. The software then automatically selects a sequence of mining which the schedule should try and achieve, based off specified corporate objectives. Under this system the engineer is able to adjust the objectives and rules to evaluate numerous scheduling scenarios quickly and easily. An XPAC AutoScheduler model was built, documented, and implemented by Runge and Petro-Canada Oil Sands Inc. personnel in a month. It is currently being used by Petro-Canada Oil Sands Inc. to run multiple schedule scenarios, most taking less than ten minutes configure and ten minutes to schedule. The results of each schedule are tabulated with supporting graphs on; the bitumen grade profile, strip ratio, ore inventories and mined tonnage. In addition to this, the block model may be animated to show the progression of the resources mining the schedules.

Reference is made to the approach to mine cooling in which the service water is used as one of the means of distributing refrigeration, and attention is drawn to various engineering disciplines or functions necessary for effective distribution and reticulation of cold water from refrigeration plant. The demand for service water is intermittent, the peak flow-rates being typically two to three times the average flowrate. The refrigeration plant, on the other hand, must preferably be operated steadily throughout the day and night, with the result that a large storage dam for cold water must be incorporated into each system in order to even out the surge in demand for water. These dams should be operated as constant-temperature, variable-volume reservoirs. The conventional cascade system involving dams on each level is not the best for sending water down mines, and schemes are described that avoid the need for such dams. Reference is made to various tests that were carried out, and to several large systems that were installed. Management and organizational problems that could arise as a result of new technological developments in mine cooling are referred to, and cost figures are quoted to indicate the large potential savings, In addition to the improved environmental conditions, that can be achieved through the use of integrated water systems.

(written discussiont).-Research work has often a more immediate and practical application to the in-dustries than even the investigators themselves realize, but coal mining has not attracted the investigator, except in so far as the mine-accident prevention work and fuel investigations are concerned. In future, the coal geologist will study the subsurface geology of the various coal seams as the petroleum geologist now studies the oil sands, and from the results of these studies the coal operator will be able to locate his shafts to the best possible advantage and to avoid faults that would interfere with underground work. There would have been many thousands of dollars saved, and perhaps some reputations, if a good stratigrapher. had been called into consultation in the southern part of Somerset County, Pa., where a local seam of coal, quite thick, was mistaken for the Pittsburgh seam, which, if ever present at that point, had long since been eroded. INTRODUCTION A method for predicting water-flood oil recovery was reported by H. Dykstra and R. L. Parsons' in 1950. It is now generally known as the Dykstra-Parsons method and is widely used by petroleum engineers. The method is semiempirical and consists of a correlation of four fundamental variables. These are: V, vertical permeability variation;' a, mobility ratio; Sw initial water saturation; and R, fractional recovery of oil in place at a given producing water-oil ratio. The correlation extends over a wide range in each of these variables, and may be applied to all formations with initial oil saturations of 45 per cent or greater. The method of calculation originally outlined by Dyhtra and Parsons closely follows their derivation. And this is a convenient way of illustrating the development of some rather complicated ideas. However, in actual use it is more cumbersome than necessary. The purpose of this note, therefore, is to provide a simplified method for making Dykstra-Parsons predictions. A SIMPLIFIED GRAPHICAL SOLUTION The correlation between V, a, Sw and R, corresponding to a given producing water-oil ratio, can be shown on a single graph. The torsion test is considered as the best test used when the part is subjected to static or dynamic torque. Many published papers have investigated the torsion of non-heat treated metals. However, very few published papers dealt with the torsion behaviour of heat treated metals. The aim of this work was to study the effect of heat treatment on the torsion behaviour of steel alloy (AISI 01), which can be used for manufacturing small and medium drills, taps and reamers. The diameter of specimens used was 15 mm. The metal used was heat treated under different conditions, then torsionally tested. The results of torsion test were divided into two groups: results obtained during elastic limit from which the shear stress, shear strain and modulus of rigidity were calculated, while from the results obtained during plastic limit the plastic depth was calculated by applying derived equation when the angle of twist was more than yield value. The results obtained indicated that the value of hardness alone is not sufficient to establish heat treatment conditions. Rather, it was found that the determination of plastic depth together with hardness can help in the establishing of the optimum condition which was hardening temperature of 820¦C, hardening time 20 minutes and tempering temperature 220¦C. This condition produces hardness of 60 HRc and plastic depth of 2.5 mm.

Significant economic benefits can result when rock mechanics is applied within a practical framework and integrated within the other engineering functions of the mine organization. Such application and integration requires management support and understanding of rock mechanics as a practical tool to help attain high standards of safety, productivity and resource recovery. For such an approach, a long-term geotechnical program is needed in most operations to build an adequate data base and to ensure that design and ground control issues are handled in a cost-effective manner. Best usage of rock mechanics in mining occurs when management recognizes the application as a long-term investment, where time is needed to realize good returns. The need for this approach is due to the difficulty in accurately predicting ground conditions ahead of mining. The practical application of rock mechanics must follow an iterative process of design and verification based on site-specific experience to account for geologic and mining impacts. Ground conditions experienced during mining must be used to check the initial mine design and, if necessary, to provide a basis for design modification. Such a practical rock mechanics program includes comparative experience, in situ instrumentation and numerical modeling. The program begins with the geologic site investigation and continues throughout the life of the mine. It is an integral part of mine planning and operation.

A new process for extracting cadmium from the electric precipitated dust produced by ISP process was studied. A leaching rate of 89.1% of cadmium was attained by leaching the dust with NH3?H2O-(NH4)2SO4 system under the best leaching conditions: ratio of liquid to solid(l:s)=2.5, c(NH3):c(NH4+)=3:5, total concentration of ammonium and ammonia=8 mol?L-1, leaching time= 1.5h, temperature=35. The most troublesome impurity of lead could be deposited from the leached out solution automatically after put it static more than 15h when the total concentration of zinc and cadmium was up to 45gL-1 , and the final concentration of lead was 0.0047 gL-1, which meant 99% of it was removed. Metallic cadmium which contained cadmium more than 99% was prepared by electrowinning under the conditions: current density=750Am-2, total concentration of Cd2+ and Zn2+>25gL-1. The current efficiency was about 87% and the energy consumption for every ton of cadmium was about 548KWht-1. Main impurities of the metallic cadmium were copper and zinc and all of they could be got rid of in the following pyrometallurgical refining step.

ALEXANDER BRYDEN Alexander Bryden, clean of engineers in the anthracite mining field, and a member of the pioneer Pittston family, was claimed by death Wednesday, September 26, 1917. The announcement was not a surprise, as he had been in a critical condition for several days. Mr. Bryden had been in failing health for a year past, but his indomitable will kept him at his accustomed duties until quite recently. Two weeks before his death he attended the regular weekly meeting of the Board of Directors of the Miners' Savings Bank in Pittston, Pa. At that time he apparently felt that his end was fast approaching, as he bade farewell to his associates on the bank board. Until a few days before the end, he continued to give attention to business matters at his home, in preparation for the end, which he met unflinchingly. In the passing of Mr. Bryden, northeastern Pennsylvania loses one of the best-known mining engineers, and the community, a man who, throughout his long life, was actively interested in its social welfare and business prosperity. He was for many years prominent in the management of the mining operations of the Pennsylvania Coal Co., and at the time of his death held the position of consulting engineer of the Pennsylvania and Hillside Coal. "Adsorption of Pd (II) anions on the surface of activated carbon (Norit 0.8) occurred at high proton concentration (0.01 – 2.5M, HCl) in the feed and averaged 27 mg/g. The adsorption process was interpreted in terms of surface ionisation and adsorption model. Enthalpy of adsorption averaged 0.4 kJ/mole indicative of an instantaneous physical adsorption process. We found that the Toth isotherm fit the adsorption data fairly accurately. A combination of the Langmuir and Freundlich equations yields an effective three-parameter Toth equation (1) which is frequently used to describe adsorption on heterogeneous surfaces.Figure 1 shows the comparison between experimental results and the model isotherms. We found that Langmuir isotherms underestimated the adsorption capacity on the porous surface while the Freundlich isotherm overestimated adsorption. Furthermore, the surface coverage at equilibrium was well described by both the Langmuir and Toth isotherms. But, Freundlich isotherm predicted a surface fraction coverage that was higher than unit. Based on better prediction of surface coverage and a reasonable fit to adsorption data, we concluded that the Toth isotherm best described the adsorption data of palladium. The adsorption process was limited by mass transfer resistance through the external film. We estimated the rate constant from equation (2), where e, ?b, and rp are porosity, fluid density and particle radius, respectively"

The fact has long been known, that the temperature at which steel is made and cast bears a very important relation to the molecular condition of the cast ingot. But until quite recently this fact has not received the consideration which its importance seems to justify. That the ingots from a very " hot " blow in the Bessemer converter, for instance, would not roll as well as those made at a lower temperature, was observed very early in the development of the process; but the further investigation of the effects of varying temperature from "hot" to "cold," has not been carried out with that degree of fulness which has been accorded to the effects on the rolling of the chemical elements, and other conditions in the manufacture. In the following pages will be presented the results of an investigation of this subject, undertaken with the view of determining how far the influence of temperature extends, through how great a range its effects can be traced, and what temperature in the making and casting will give the best results in the rolling of the ingots. "The harsh environment of the Carbothermic Aluminum process makes necessary numerical modeling as a means of process visualization and understanding. A brief survey of the various numerical models, with emphasis on CFD, applied in the development of the process is presented.IntroductionThe environment of the Alcoa Carbothermic reactor is necessarily a harsh one, with temperatures approaching 2100 °C and plenty of reactive dust and vapors. As such, it is difficult to directly observe what is actually taking place. Thermocouples can last for a few minutes but are eventually destroyed. The openings to optical pyrometers become occluded with dust and condensation. Graphite sheathing embrittles, reacts away or becomes clogged with condensate. Dip-samples on steel rods are routinely taken, but their interpretation is often unclear.Those measurements that can be reliably taken are invaluable, but often do not provide a complete picture. Therefore from the very inception of the project both physical and computer based models have played an important role. Modeling provides an intuitive understanding of the processes that might be taking place and in very many cases approach quantitative prediction. I will briefly touch upon computer-based modeling performed at Alcoa over 12 years of the Carbothermic project, with special emphasis on CFD. Advantages to Members of Our Advertising Section.-It is our intention to make the advertising section of the Bulletin as comprehensive as possible, so that members can turn to it for complete information as to where to buy the best mining and metallurgical supplies at the lowest prices. No firms or supplies of dubious reputation are advertised in the Bulletin. If members, in buying any material, will refer to the advertisement of that material in the Bulletin, or if they do not find it advertised in the Bulletin, will, when ordering, ask the manufacturers why the goods were not advertised in the Institute publication, it will be of material benefit to all of us, because the chief reason why advertisers are unable to trace direct results is because purchasers do not mention the Bulletin when writing. Finally, if members, when in need of anything whatsoever, will write to the Institute headquarters, an effort will be made to send them a complete list of manufacturers able to supply the desired materials of good quality. The furnishing of these lists will be a benefit to our Advertising Department, as well as to the members. We need scarcely call attention to the advantages obtained by the members from the money which advertising brings in, because all this money is returned directly to the members in one form or another.

Coal production in the Central Appalachian region has a long history, and it remains a major US coal-producing region. The coal industry consensus is that the region is in a state of decline as evidenced by the recent lower regional output. Are Central Appalachian coal reserves adequate for the region to continue as a major supplier of low sulfur coal? To answer that question, this paper focuses on the Central Appalachian coal reserve base estimates and production trends. Central Appalachian (CAPP) reserve evaluations face the difficulty that there are no publicly available databases that provide a thorough analysis of remaining CAPP reserves. Based on best available Energy Information Administration (EIA) data, a coal reserve estimate of 17.6 billion tons is developed. This estimate appears high according to industry perception. Recent United States Geological Survey (USGS), and other state agency coal reserve estimation projects are evaluated as alternative approaches to the re-serve estimation problem. Using the conclusions from these studies, the CAPP reserve base is estimated at 7.1 billion tons. Another perspective on the CAPP reserve base is provided by reserve holdings of major CAPP operating companies reported at 5.2 billion tons. A conceptual mining cost analysis indicates substantial price increases will be necessary to offset this deterioration in the economic viability of the reserve base.

The Rotary Kiln at TeKumi was commissioned in February 2002. The process involves burning limestone at 1000 - 11 000¦C to produce a burnt lime (CaO) product. This paper describes the design and installation of a trifoil system to improve the energy efficiency of the kiln. An energy balance showed that 32 per cent of the energy was being lost through the flue gases, compared to 5.8 per cent in shell losses and 2.5 per cent lost as heat in the product. The trifoil proved to be the best way to tap the energy from the flue gases. Drying tests showed that a trifoil improved the drying time of limestone by 37.5 per cent, compared to only 25 per cent for a lifter system. The trifoil system increases the surface area for heat transfer in a Rotary Kiln by 180 per cent. The overal energy efficiency of the Rotary Kiln was improved by 15 per cent, resulting in a 15 per cent increase in production and an 80¦C reduction in flue gas temperature. This has reduced dust build up in the ducting while reducing maintenance costs through a reduced fan speed. The trifoil hub was designed with tooths at the centre to prevent shifting. Each trifoil leg has an anchor block on the down side to prevent downward movement of the trefoil legs.

High precision GPS systems for mining are accurate to within a few centimetres. Typical systems consist of one or more GPS antenna, GPS boards, sensors to detect the position of the blade or bucket of the machine radios to pick up correction signals, a computer to control the system and a display screen to give instructions and information to the operator. GPS systems offer two benefits û they give information to the operator to get his job done faster and more accurately and they can send information to management about how the job was done. On dozers, GPS systems allow the operator to accurately complete earthmoving jobs with no survey pegs. On hydraulic excavators the systems can be used to accurately locate the position of the bucket teeth for selective mining. On blasthole drills the systems can guide the operator to each hole and record accurate as-drilled plans. By reporting the position of the blade or bucket in three dimensions it is possible to continuously upgrade a mapfile of the excavation. From this file it is then possible to report productivity numbers in real time. High precision GPS works best with a minimum of five satellites visible. This may be difficult in a pit. Systems which also access the Russian GLONASSS satellites offer significantly better uptime. GPS systems will become indispensable for efficient mining operations in the future.

An evaluation was made of the wear and performance characteristics of liter bars, and the cost-life effectiveness of backing materials for rotary-mil liners. In a large run-of-mine mil in which the liter bars were mounted on grid liners of austenitic manganese steel (AMS), the liners had an average life that was five to six times that of equivalent unprotected liners. For a single mil, this is equivalent to annual savings in the cost of materials of up to R320 000, and to a downtime of 100 hours. Of the five materials tested in a large pebble mil grinding quartzitic ore, AMS grids and 'white iron' blocks performed best on a cost-life basis, with possibly improved performance from a real white cast iron. (The 'white iron' was shown by microstructural analysis to contain flake raphite and pearlite, being in reality a grey cast iron.) The high-chromium white iron had by far the longest predicted life, with mild steel a surprising second. Rubber was shown to last well in this type of mil. The wear rates of liners change during their lifetimes. The protective effect of liter bars was clearly illustrated by the reduction of over 40 per cent in the wear rates of the liners when the lifter bars were renewed to a height of 80 mm from a fully worn height of 35 mm.

THE following paper is a description of the plant and operations of the above company in their recovery and treatment of the quartz tailings deposited as final residues by the various mining companies. at Waihi, Karangahake, and Waitekauri into theOhinemuri River. During the past few years the silting of the Ohinemuri River has increased to such an extent as to cause considerable interest and discussion, and has lately been the subject of a most extensive inquiry by a Royal Commission, to consider the best means of dealing with what is generally spoken of as a public nuisance.Ever since the commencement of mining in this district, which was opened as a goldfield in 1875, the various mines operating have been discharging their tailings into this river, it having been proclaimed a sludge channel in 1895. Up to the year 1900 the quantity of quartz crushed was not large, probably not exceeding 500,000 tons; but since that date the annual tonnages discharged have increased enormously, and at the present time would total from 550,000 to 600,000 tons per year. Records show that up to the end of 1910 at least 5,000,000 tons have been crushed, for an actual yield of bullion considerably exceeding £10,000,000 in value, and all the valuable tailings from...
