A second-order approximation to the exact solution of the diffusivity equation corresponding to the pressure build-up of a well producing at a variable rate is derived. This approximation is applicable when the well's shut-in time is larger than the total time elapsed since the well was first produced. The resulting equations are compact in form and easy to use. Thus, the need for Horner's' theoretically precise but rather laborious solution to the above problem is eliminated. In addition, these equations apply where the use of Horner's widely known approximate method is questionable. From a practical point of view, the reported method is best suited for analysis of drill-stem tests and short production tests conducted on new wells. INTRODUCTION The utility of drill-stem and short production tests in reservoir studies has long been recognized by the reservoir engineer. If interpreted correctly they could lead to a wealth of information upon which may depend the success or failure of reservoirs' analyses. Initial reservoir pressure and the average flow capacity are two quantities that are normally sought from a drill-stem and/or a short production test analysis. Pressures are the most valuable and useful data in reservoir engineering. Directly or indirectly, they enter into all phases of reservoir engineering calculations. Therefore, their accurate determination is of utmost importance. The flow capacity kh of the reservoir is indicative of its commercial capability. In addition, it can indicate the presence of a darnaged zone around the wellbore and, thus, the necessity for remedial measures. Of the several methods used to analyze drill-stem and short production tests, Horner's' method is by and large the most common. It applies to an infinite reservoir and or a limited reservoir where the effect of production has not been felt by the boundary. Horner's method makes use of the so-called "point-source" solution of the diffusivity equation. The point-source solution is approximated by a logarithmic function and the superposition theorem is utilized to give the familiar pressure build-up equation where is the shut-in time, q is in reservoir barrels per day and the rest of the symbols conform with AIME nomenclature. Eq. 1 was derived for a well which produced at a constant rate q from time zero to time t and was then shut in. In actuality, such a constant rate of production does not normally obtain. Therefore, a correction must be applied to Eq. 1 to account for the varying rates of production. Horner suggested two methods. The first, which results in a theoretically accurate solution, is rather lengthy and laborious and, thus, it is not suited for routine analysis. The second which has been termed a "good working approximation" is the one used by the majority of the reservoir engineers. In the second method, Eq. 1 is modified by simply introducing a corrected time t, and writing where q is the last established production rate prior to shut-in, and t, is obtained by dividing the total cumulative production by the last established rate. Horner's original paper does not give any indication that this method of correction is based on any theoretical justification. In addition, there is a question as to what constitutes the last established rate. In case of a drill-stem test some engineers use the average rate obtained by dividing the total fluid produced by the total flow time, while others calculate the average rate by dividing the total fluid produced by the last flow-period time. Obviously, different results obtain for the different flow rates used. Because of this, a simple method to the varying-rate case was developed which is theoretically sound and which defines clearly the flow rate and its associated time to be used in the calculations. The final equation arrived at is where q* and t* are a modified rate and time, respectively, and can be easily calculated. In addition, it is shown theoretically that Horner's approximate method, if used for a variable-rate case, gives the correct pressure but would not be expected to give the correct flow capacity. FOR the past six years gravity surveys have been used for underground prospecting in the copper mines at Bisbee, Ariz. The primary purpose of the surveys has been to reduce the diamond drilling and crosscutting necessary for exploration. Since many of the orebodies are small, and geologic control is not always apparent, any information that will direct the drilling and crosscutting is highly desirable. Because of extensive development and exploration work in the copper mines at Bisbee, it has been possible to cover more than 630,000 ft of crosscuts on 30 levels with the gravity surveys. In the process the gravity procedures have been refined to a high degree. Density Contrast: For a gravity survey to be successful, a sufficient density contrast must exist between the geologic feature sought and surrounding host rocks. Most mineralized areas will provide this contrast if fairly massive bodies are present. In the Bisbee area the entire sequence of formations, except for alluvium, appears to have specific gravities ranging from 2.65 to 2.70. These values have been determined by means of a large number of cut samples and diamond drill cores. As a further check, vertical gravity differences have been used where nonmineralized sections are known to occur.' The only known major gravity disturbances result from mineralization that has increased the density and the voids that have decreased density. The voids are caused by mining operations and by underground water movement that has developed several areas of caverns. Equipment: While not absolutely essential, a small rugged gravity meter, such as the Worden meter, is highly desirable. A tall tripod, about the height of a transit tripod, permits instrument set-ups in deep water and in locations where fallen timber and muck piles make it impossible to use a short tripod. An additional advantage of a tall tripod is that it places the meter in the center of the crosscut, reducing the error caused by the crosscut void. Size and weight are important, since the only satisfactory means of operating the meter underground is to carry it by hand. A backpack can be used in rare instances but is usually a hindrance because of the close station spacing. The operator's ability to move through tight clearances will improve survey coverage, as it is then possible to move through raises and caved areas and to pass mine cars and machinery with a minimum of trouble. Station Control: Gravity stations are normally located every 100 ft along the crosscuts, at each intersection, and in the face of all stub crosscuts. In areas of high gravity relief, or where small anomalies might be expected, stations may be located at 25 or 50-ft intervals. When possible, the stations should be offset to avoid effects of raises or other voids. The gravity stations on a level are tied to one or more base stations, which are usually located at the shaft or near the portal of an adit. The base stations may be part of a gravity control net that extends to each level in the mine as well as to the surface. Such a net extending throughout the potential area of the surveys is highly desirable, as it is then possible to compare all gravity stations on a uniform basis. The stations that are part of the base net should be carefully established by multiple readings and, if necessary, by a least squares adjustment of the loops. In some instances where levels do not have a shaft station, or where access may be blocked by caving, it may be necessary to establish secondary bases at the top and bottom of the raises that are between levels. Under fair conditions 70 to 90 gravity stations can be located and run in 6 hr by a two-man crew. The best field procedures depend on conditions. Reduction of Field Data: Most of the time required to produce a final gravity map is consumed in processing the data. Each meter reading must be corrected for a minimum of five factors that affect the gravity value in addition to the density contrast being sought. These factors are 1) instrumental drift, 2) station elevation, 3) topography, 4) latitude, and 5) regional gravity gradient. Mine openings, such as stopes and raises, will affect the value. However, it is seldom practical to make corrections for these voids. Usually a rotation is made on the field note on the station, and any

IN the early stages of design it was not considered necessary that separate crushing plants be built for the new sulphide concentrator and smelter until sometime in the future. The plan was to use the existing crushing facilities for both oxide and sulphide ore. A few additions were contemplated for the existing plants, such as increased bin capacity, and possibly two new secondary crushing units. The more the problem was studied and discussed with the plant operators, the more it became evident that it was complex. It involved the classification of different kinds of ore from the open pit mine -sulphide, oxide and mixed-and how best to separate them so that each kind of ore was given the proper processing and treatment. It also involved the problem of keeping the different ores from being contaminated in bins, hoppers and chutes. Added to these, transportation became complicated and would involve additional handling and loading of ore from crushing plants to conveyors, to bins, and finally to railroad cars which were to be hauled to the concentrator and dumped into the fine ore bin. General In the early part of 1951 it was decided that the concentrator be constructed with ten grinding units instead of seven as originally authorized. The smelter was to be increased proportionally and naturally also the overall tonnages of ore to be handled by the new sulphide plant. Due to this increase in plant capacity and the larger tonnages involved, the difficulties which would arise by using the existing crushing plants were increased to a point where it became evident that the building of new crushing plants for sulphide ore exclusively was technically, as well as economically, advantageous. Authorization was, therefore, given by the company to construct new crushing plants to handle 30,000 tons of ore per day, and capable of reducing the run-of-open-pit ore to the proper size feed for the 10x14-ft rod mills in the concentrator. The ore, mined in the open pit, sometimes comes in pieces as large as 6 to 7 ft diam. The rod mills may call for ore crushed to 3/4 in. The large .size of ore delivered from the open pit determined that a 60-in. gyratory crusher be used as primary breaker. Such a crusher will have a capacity considerably in excess of 30,000 tons per day. The crusher will be a single discharge unit driven by a 500-hp electric motor through a tear coupling and a floating shaft. This type of drive has proven successful at a number of other crusher installations which our company has operating in the United States, Mexico and South America. The tear coupling will protect both the crusher and motor against damage in case of overload. No new features are incorporated in the design of the crusher itself, except that the, discharge chute is made the full width of the crusher with parallel sides instead of the usual converging sides. This change in detail should eliminate, a feature which has been a bottleneck in some of the operating plants and has caused loss of production due to ore hanging up and blocking the chute. The secondary crushing plants will have three 7-ft standard Symons cone crushers and six 7-ft short head Symons crushers. Between the primary and secondary crushing plants a coarse ore bin will be constructed with a nominal draw-off capacity of 30,000 tons of ore. The standard Symons and the short head Symons will be in separate buildings. All the crushing plants and the coarse ore bin are interconnected with conveyor belts for transporting the ore to the crushers at the tonnage rate desired. The final product of the new crushing plants is produced by the short head crushers. It will be delivered onto a conveyor belt leading to the top of the fines ore bin in the concentrator. A separate conveyor belt running the full length of the fines ore bin and provided with a movable tripper of rugged design will discharge the sulphide ore into the bin. The concentrator bin is planned and designed so that the installation of this additional conveyor will not interfere with the operation of the two railroad tracks on which crushed ore is brought from the existing oxide plant. Thus when completed the bin can be filled simultaneously by ore from the new crushing plant and by ore from the existing leaching plant.

The basic theme of this symposium and panel Is Rotation Pads: Are They Optimized? There Is a. reason for phrasing the title In the form of a question. There Is not only the technical competency which we must address; there Is the operating philosophy that must be evaluated on the part of both the customer and the supplier. Customers desire reagents which are trouble-free and capable of providing that extra amount of selectivity or recovery. When they receive ft, after the supplier has provided several years of Internal research, one of the first concerns/complaints Is the price of the product. This has a tendency to rapidly reduce a supplier's support level In the future. Suppliers are equally guilty from another perspective. When they approach a customer to Introduce a product, they often attempt to market by offering only a price Incentive. They then wonder why a customer doesn't respond Immediately to the incentive. They are often oblivious to the fact that the reagent cost is such a minor aspect of the operating budget, and the customer has many more pressing problems on a day-to-day basis In comparison to the reagent cost. We need to establish the understanding that reagent cost Is an Inconsequential cost of operation, and yet has such a disproportionately high Impact on the success of the entire operation. This understanding Is required by both the customer and the supplier. We say to each other,' why are we discussing this since this has been obvious for some time?' The reason is relatively simple in that we talk about it, acknowledge it, and yet we do not adhere to it. The supplier provides a product along with test data containing statistics, analysis, recovery, grade and cost calculations while most of the time ignoring the operating technique which must be applicable In the plant In order to optimize the product. He expects the reagent to be substituted In the plant for the existing reagent and ft works or does not work after trying several variables. The operating management Is equally guilty, In order to best explain this to both the customer and the supplier, ft becomes necessary to review the basic purpose of the major reagents utilized In flotation. A collector is basically to Impact selective, maximum water repellency on the surface of a particular mineral, The frother has the purpose of providing a chemically stabilized membrane on the surface of the bubble at the air-water interphase. This, then, provides a host environment for the attachment of the collector-coated mineral to a bubble. The depressant functions In the reverse of the collector and must demonstrate the same or greater degree of selectivity than expected of a collector. The key area which has been Ignored Is the rate by which these reactions occur and Interrelate. This has a very specific effect on the operating technique and the compatibility of the chemistry, equipment, and the operator himself. Researchers, suppliers, and customers provide reams of data to demonstrate how their products or design produce, for example, higher kinetics, more selectivity, or more recovery. The Information is often true. After all, we are all learned men and laboratory and actual plant data do not lie. However, we must remember the theme of this symposium and panel: Flotation Plants: Are They Optimized? and Optimizing of Flotation Reagents? The direct, honest comment to the two titles is very simple. OF COURSE THEY ARE NOT The plants, equipment, and reagents had better not be optimized or else we are in trouble. The Issue of this panel discussion is to approach this subject from a slightly different or perhaps mainly Ignored aspects of optimizing reagents in flotation. When we have reagents which provide higher kinetics, more selectivity, and better recovery, how do we use them? Since each reagent has a different physical characteristics of froth, rate of recovery, volume effect on the compatibility of equipment, and many more aspects too numerous to mention, the question which has been severely Ignored Is, 'What degree of study and cooperation by both the supplier and the operating management has been conducted In order to prepare the operator for maximizing the performance of a reagent In relation to the rest of the system?" Prior to testing a new reagent, how much time Is spent to bring the actual operator(s) Into the program to make them feel part of the program? How much time is spent explaining to the operator on the float floor how to possibly take advantage of a reagent with faster kinetics or one which Is Inherently more selective? What

The correlation of the high temperature chemical properties of slag-metal systems with some easily measured property of either slag or metal at room temperature has been the goal of both process metallurgists and melting operators for many years. There are several rapid methods for estimating various constituents in steel in addition to the conventional chemical methods which are quite fast, but these do not reveal the nature of the slag as a refining agent, which is of primary interest to the steelmaker. Furthermore, there are several methods for examining slag, the three principal ones being slag pancake, petrographic examination, and the previously mentioned chemical analysis. The main objection to the last two is the lime required to make a satisfactory estimate of the mineralogical or chemical components. The objection to the first is the inadequacy of the information obtained. A new technique has been developed by Philbrook, Jolly and Henry1 whereby the properties of slags are evaluated from an aqueous solution leached from a finely divided sample of slag. It is known that the pH or hydrogen ion concentration (of saturated solutions that have dissolved certain basic oxides, notably calcium oxide) will indicate a pronounced basicity. Philbrook, Jolly and Henry devised the pH measurement technique in order to supply open hearth operators with a fast, reasonably accurate method of estimating slag basicity. They offered the method as an empirical observation and made no claims as to its theoretical justification. The results were presented as an experi-metally observed relationship which applied over an important range of basic open hearth slags. They found that, in plotting the measured pH against the basicity, the best relationship existed between the pH and the log of the simple V ratio, CaO/SiO2. Extensive investigation also showed that there were several variables in the experimental technique that influenced the results and necessitated following a standard procedure to obtain reproducible pH readings. These variables were: 1. Particle size of the slag powder used. 2. Weight of sample used per given volume of water. 3. Time of shaking and standing allowed before the pH was measured. 4. Exclusion of free access of atmospheric carbon dioxide to the suspension. 5. Temperature of the extract at the time the pH was measured. In subsequent investigations of the pH method by Tenenbaum and Brown2 and by Smith, Monaghan and Hay3 the general conclusions of Philbrook's work were reaffirmed. It was the object of the present investigation to extend the technique to a point where it could be used to evaluate slags of all types. Experimental Results PARTICLE SIZK OF SLAG POWDER A large sample of commercial blast furnace slag of intermediate basicity (V-ratio 1.15) was selected for the study. The slag had been put through a jaw crusher until all of it passed through a 20 mesh screen. Five fractions of this crushed material were separated, -20 to +40, -40 to +60, -60 to +100, -100 to +200, and -200 mesh. A representative sample of 0.5 g was removed from each fraction and the pH determined using the method of Philbrook. Check pH analyses on the sample fractions varied due to the different amounts of shaking. To eliminate this variable, a mechanical shaker was employed. In order to know the exact time of contact between the slag and water, it was found necessary to filter the extract at the end of the shaking period. Using the mechanical shaker and a filtering apparatus, similar runs were made on the five fractions for contact times of 5, 10, 20, and 40 min. Random checks gave reproducible results within 0.02 pH. The data are plotted in Fig 1. It can be seen from the plot that each slag fraction is hydrolyzed to an extent that is roughly proportional to the surface area exposed to the water. The (—100 to +200) mesh material changed very little in pH after 10 min. shaking time. The curves are symmetrical and lie in proper relation to one another. The —200 mesh curve appears to be somewhat flatter than the others, but this can be attributed to the portion of very fine material that is not present in the other fractions. The closeness of the (-100 to +200) mesh curve to the —200 mesh curve and the fact that a —100 mesh sample would contain amounts of slag down to 1 or 2 microns in diam were considered sufficient reasons for selecting a —100 mesh sample as representative of the whole sample of slag for the purposes of this investigation.

The current financial state of the mineral industry, in general, is bad. Economic prospects for improvements in the near future are uncertain. What will improve mineral investment economics so the mining industry can return to a more normal (in terms of past experience) production level? Basically, mineral commodity prices must rise. They must rise to economically justify reopening closed mines and for management to seriously consider expansion or development of existing and new mines. With the worldwide economy depressed for more than a year now (longer for most segments of the mineral industry), supply/demand relationships for mineral commodities are such that prices are depressed-except for precious metals. In investment analysis of the economic potential of existing or new investments in any industry, product price generally is one of the key parameters having great impact on the economic viability of projects. Petroleum and synfuels industry development contracted last year for the same product price reasons that have brought mineral industry development to a standstill. Much of the new mine development activity now underway or in the serious planning stages around the world involves precious metals ore body development simply because precious metal prices are high enough now or are projected to be high enough in future production years to give overall satisfactory project economics. It will take significant improvement in nonprecious metal mineral commodity prices in 1983 to develop significant new mine investment interest except in very high grade ore body special situations. Mineral Investment Decision Making Before progressing further with the discussion of mineral investment considerations for the coming year, it should be emphasized that mineral investment decision making-like all industry or individual investment decision making does not relate just to economic considerations. Investment decision making should and generally does involve three analyses: • Economic analysis • Financial analysis • Intangible analysis Economic analysis evaluates the relative economic merits of investment situations from a profitability viewpoint based on discounted cash flow analysis of projected investment revenues and costs. Financial analysis, on the other hand, refers to where and how the funds for proposed investments will be obtained. Regardless of the project's economic potential, if you can't finance it, the project will not be done. Intangible analysis considers factors affecting investments but which cannot be quantified easily in economic terms. Typical intangible factors are legal considerations, public opinion, goodwill, environmental and ecological impacts, and regulatory or political considerations, to name a few. New mine development investment decision making in the US has been impacted heavily by intangible considerations in the past decade and will probably continue to be impacted by them in 1983. There is a common tendency in literature and management practice to interchange the terms economic analysis and financial analysis. This often leads to confusion about the rationale for investment decisions. For example, in the past year a majority of companies in all types of industries cut back budgets for new projects. Often this was done not because new project economics were unsatisfactory, but because cash flow from existing operations was reduced compared to previous years due to the recession, and debt service requirements were high from existing loans so new borrowing was undesirable. For financial reasons, in other words, many projects were shelved last year. That included some precious metal mining projects and many petroleum projects. Many other projects were shelved for economic reasons (sometimes combined with financial reasons in the case of marginal economic projects). New mine development for copper, lead, zinc, molybdenum, iron ore, and synthetic fuels are a few examples. Economic Uncertainty and Financial Considerations Mineral project analysis has always involved a lot of uncertainty with respect to determining ore grades, tonnage of producible reserves, operating and capital cost projects, and mineral commodity prices estimates. The wide swings in mineral commodity prices in recent years and the almost impossible task of projecting future prices with any degree of confidence or accuracy concerns mineral project investment decision makers. In developing a new copper or silver mine, it is not today's price of copper or silver that is relevant to economic analysis of the mine, but what the price will be during the producing years. There is no way to avoid projecting the escalation (or de-escalation) effects on revenues and costs. To analyze a project in terms of today's dollar revenues and costs implicitly assumes that escalation will not change today's project costs and revenues; or that, if they do change, the project economics will be unaffected by the changes. This often is not the best or even a realistic assumption. The inherent uncertainty associated with historical mineral price swings is exacerbated in 1983 by the uncertainty of when

IN connection with some recent work on the effect of impurities on the ductility of chromium, it appeared desirable to know the solid solubility of carbon in chromium. A literature survey indicated that this information was not available. Although considerable work has been done on the Cr-C phase diagram,&apos;.&apos; previous investigators have been more concerned with the structure and phase boundaries of the carbide phases than with the terminal solid solution. The phase diagram shown in Fig. 1 is taken from the work of Bloom and Grant&apos; and represents the most recent determination. As indicated by the dashed line, the a solid-solubility limit was not determined. Experimental Procedure Alloys of chromium were prepared from hydrogen-treated and vacuum-degassed electrolytic chromium plus spectrographic grade carbon. The oxygen and nitrogen content of the alloys was <0.002 pct. After melting, analysis of the alloys showed them to contain 0.02, 0.08, 0.15, and 0.55 pct C. Pieces of the alloys were heated in a protective atmosphere to various temperatures and then quenched after holding for a time sufficient to insure equilibrium. Microscopic examination of the as-quenched alloys for the presence of a second phase was used as a measure of the solubility limit. The heats were made in a multiple hearth arc-furnace using a zirconium-gettered static argon atmosphere. A zirconium melt was made before each Cr-C heat. Triple melting was used to insure ingot homogeneity as shown by microscopic examination. The alloys were prepared by adding portions of a 4.5 pct C-Cr master alloy to high purity chromium. The carbon contents listed previously were those obtained by analysis. The nitrogen and oxygen contents after arc melting were both <0.002 pct. Sections 1/8X1/4X1/2 in. were cut from the 100-g ingots and a hole drilled in one end in order to suspend the sample from a molybdenum wire. After the surface was carefully cleaned, a sample of each melt was hung in a mullite tube heated externally by a platinum resistance furnace connected to a vacuum system. The lower portion of the mullite tube was sealed to Pyrex and closed off several inches below the furnace. This was filled with sili-cone oil kept cold by circulating cold water around the outside of the Pyrex. Quenching into the oil bath was achieved by melting a fuse wire supporting the sample. It required about 4 sec for the sample to cool from 1400" to 600°C. This severity of quench was considered satisfactory to freeze-in the high temperature equilibrium. For tests made at temperatures of 900" to 1200°C, heating was done in vacuum; for tests above 1200°C, an argon atmosphere was used. The holding time employed ranged from 12 hr at 900°C to 6 hr at 1400°C. Experiments were performed at temperatures of 900°, 1000°, 1100°, 1200°, 1300°, and 1400°C. Microscopic examination for evidence of a second phase was done at X1500. Experimental Result The microstructures of a 0.08 pct C-Cr alloy as-cast and after quenching from 1300°C are shown in Figs. 2 and 3. A 0.15 pct C-Cr alloy quenched from 1300°C is shown in Fig. 4. The data obtained from the quenching experiments is shown graphically in Fig. 5. If the Van&apos;t Hoff equation is obeyed, a plot on a logarithmic scale of the mol fraction of solute vs the reciprocal of the absolute temperature should give a straight line. For dilute solutions the weight percentage can be substituted for the mol fraction without introducing any appreciable error. The Van&apos;t Hoff equation can then be written as where H is the heat of solution in calories per mol. The slope of the straight line on the log pct C vs 1/T plot gives the value of AH. Assuming that the Van&apos;t Hoff equation is obeyed, which is probably justified for the dilute solution of carbon in chromium, the heavy straight line shown on Fig. 5 represents the best fit of the data. This line was obtained as follows. On Fig. 5 the results of the microscopic examination of all alloys following quenching were plotted and designated as to whether one or two phases were seen. Below 1100°C all alloys showed a second phase on quenching. The heavy vertical lines shown in Fig. 5 therefore represent the possible range of the ter-

EXTRACTION of uranium from ores is being ac-complished by processes which. for the most part, subject the entire ore to acid or carbonate leaching. Ore deposits with a U 3 O 8 content below 0.10 pct U 3 O 8 are seldom considered suitable for treatment by leaching. A preliminary concentration that would enrich the uranium content of an ore by a simple, low cost process based on physical properties of the ore might result in some low grade deposits becoming commercial ores. In addition, the process might be employed in existing operations to reduce transportation and leaching costs and to increase capacity of existing leaching plants. A study to attempt the development of a preliminary concentration process for primary uranium ores was undertaken by the Colorado School of Mines Research Foundation under sponsorship of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission. The objective of this work was to produce concentrates containing 0.25 pct U3O8 from the low grade ores tested. Ores Tested: The main effort was devoted to the low grade primary uranium ores from northwestern Saskatchewan. Samples were obtained from the Beaverlodge operation of the Eldorado Mining & Refining Ltd. Additional primary ores, obtained from deposits in Gilpin County, Colo., contained from 0.07 to 0.10 pct U3O8. Summary of Concentration Tests: The Beaverlodge ore was tested to determine amenability of the ore to concentration by magnetic, electrostatic, gravity, and scrubbing processes. None of these produced satisfactory results. Both gravity and magnetic processes produced fairly good concentrates when closely sized fractions of the ore were treated, but on the basis of treating the total ore, recovery was poor. Preparation of sized fractions and the low capacity of equipment for suitable concentration made these methods impractical. As flotation offered the advantage of treating the total ore without intermediate sizing, the main effort was in this direction. A flotation process was developed that fulfilled the concentration objectives as set by the AEC. Pilot plant testing was used to verify results obtained from laboratory batch testing. Mineralogy: A petrographic examination of the Beaverlodge ore included a study of polished sur- faces and identification of the radioactive mineral by autoradiograph and X-ray diffraction. Approximate quantitative mineral identification was as follows: quartz, 60 pct; orthoclase feldspar, 20 pct; chlorite, 10 pct; carbonates, 5 pct; and miscellaneous minerals, 5 pct. Included in this last group were plagioclase feldspar, pyrite, mica, chalcopyrite, pyroxene, sericite, magnetite, galena, and uraninite. The most general occurrence of uraninite was in the form of crusts and thin coatings on limonite-stained grains of pyrite, quartz, and pyrite-quartz intergrowth. At least 90 pct of the uraninite was still attached to other minerals in a 100 by 200-mesh size fraction. The uraninite crusts were as small as 10 to 20 µ diam, and 5 to 10 µ thick. The Flotation Process Petrographic examinations of the Beaverlodge ore had indicated the impracticability of attempting to concentrate the uranium by floating individual grains of uraninite. Liberation of the uraninite required grinding to sizes below those suitable for flotation. However, there was preferential association of the uraninite with some minerals while others were free of uraninite attachment. The approach to the development of a flotation process was, therefore, based upon an attempt to concentrate the uraninite by floating carrier minerals. The following paragraphs discuss the various stages of the process with regard to the factors tested and the conditions under which best results were obtained. Grinding: The most effective size range for flotation was —150 mesh + 13 µ. The —13 µ material in the final concentrate had a higher U3O8 content than the total ore, but not as high as the average concentrate; however, rejection of slimes before flotation was prohibitive because of the loss in uranium carried in the —13 µ fraction. Grinding techniques which contributed to a minimum production of fines, such as stage grinding, were then employed. Quartz and Silicate Depression: These minerals represented approximately 80 pct of the ore and were free to a large degree of uraninite attachment. Significant improvement in the grade of the concentrate was obtained by depression of these minerals with hydrofluoric acid or sodium fluoride. Promoter: Selective stage flotation of uraninite carrier minerals was simplified by development of a single promoter mixture. The mixture consisted of an emulsion of a fatty acid, fuel oil, and a petroleum sulfonate and was selected after a comprehensive series of tests. The use of diesel engines in underground hard-rock mines dates back to the late 1940s. For the first several years, they were used only occasionally, being limited to a few metal mines that experimented with crawler¬mounted front-end loaders, tractor-trailer hauling units, a few tractors for drill-compressor mounts, and utility cleanup machines. By the mid-1950s, track loaders had become commonplace in limestone mines and uranium mines on the Colorado Plateau in the United States, as well as in Canada. Use of crawler-mounted tractors as drill and compressor mounts also increased. By the end of the 1950s, rubber-tired loaders and some haulers began to replace the track-type machines and rail-mounted cars that had been in use. About 1960, the rubber-tired machines brought about a new era of underground mining mobility and flexibility, centered on a method commonly known as "trackless mining." Ultimately, many of the underground rail-type systems for loading and hauling were replaced by the trackless mining technique. ECONOMIC CONSIDERATIONS The size and nature of mineral deposits, plus ground control techniques, historically had dictated small open¬ings to the surface from many underground mines. The small mine openings led to the development of special rubber-tired loaders and haulers designed specifically for access through the small openings. However, some mines, particularly those in massive mineral deposits, are able to excavate and maintain very large openings, and some use modified room-and-pillar systems. With the large mine openings, the use of larger, more produc¬tive equipment such as that commonly found in surface mining becomes economical. In fact, productivity gen¬erally increases at a more pronounced rate than machine size increases because many of the larger machines were designed for heavy-duty shot-rock applications in surface mines and construction sites where the handling of blasted rock is common. Combining greater productivity often inherent in larger machines, with reduced downtime resulting from using fully developed machines with fast parts and service backup, some mine operators have been able to reduce material handling costs appreciably while reduc¬ing manpower requirements for operators and main¬tenance men. Large mine openings increase the amount of rock that must be handled in the development work, and they sometimes increase the dilution in stopes or rooms, de¬pending upon the dimensions of the ore zone. Providing adequate space for the unrestricted operation of large surface mining machines could, therefore, lead to more waste segregation and handling costs. It could also cause greater ore dilution that would result in a lower grade of ore being delivered to the processing plant. The tradeoffs between opposing cost factors must be reconciled and balanced to achieve the best overall cost of the crude ore, concentrates, or product. EQUIPMENT MODIFICATIONS Loaders and haulers designed for surface mining are seldom used underground in their standard con¬figurations without some modifications. If done, the modifications generally are made by the equipment dealer and/or the user, and the modifications usually include one or more of the following items: 1) The exhaust stack is lowered, and its direction is changed. Usually, it is repositioned horizontally to the rear, or it is fed into the engine fan to diffuse the exhaust gases. 2) The operator&apos;s position is lowered by either lowering the seat or changing the seat to a side mount. 3) The operator controls are adjusted to fit the new operator position. 4) Other components, such as the radiator and loader tower, are lowered. 5) Special bumper guards are mounted at the base of the radiator area. 6) An exhaust conditioner is mounted and con¬nected, using either a catalytic or a water-type condi¬tioner, or both. The mining executive works in a cyclical industry. His employment is subject to the vagaries of the marketplace. Boom and bust has always been the industry&apos;s story. "Big oil" failed in its mining effort. This left emotional and financial scars on many mining families. One must remember that mining executives always play a high-stakes game. Given the cyclical nature of the mining industry, mining executives need to take care of their own financial security. The mining executive that does not plan for his financial security in this cyclical business is playing Russian Roulette with his future. Take a look at those people who have reached their later years with the mining industry. One usually finds three categories of people. Those few in the first group have been fortunate enough to have worked for one company. They have survived the winnowing process of cyclicality, political problems, and takeovers. They have reached normal retirement age. For them, the retirement years are usually comfortable. People in the second group have worked for those same mining companies. But these people have been forced out by early retirement. Or they have been laid off for cyclical, takeover, or political reasons. The third group includes those who have held many positions in the mining industry. Probably not until their later years are they fully vested, if at all, in a pension program. The first small group, then, is the exception. The others, unless they have taken care of their financial security, are doomed to later years of financial problems, stress, and unhappiness. Too late in life, many realize the harsh realities of failure to plan and implement a personal financial program. Mining executives go to some of the world&apos;s leading mining schools, to learn how to make money. The curriculum is technically strong. Most mining graduates are familiar with the intricacies of discounted cash flow, present value, and the Hoskold formula. But few of these same mining schools require courses on personal financial planning. Such courses could give mining students a realistic foundation and the mechanisms with which to cope with their cyclical profession. An executive has only three sources of money. He can make money at work. He can put his money to work. Or he can get money from charities, such as government programs. Of these three sources of money, money at work has the best chance of providing financial security in later years. The mining executive must think of the day when he will be too old to work and contribute to the market place. At this point, the quantity and quality of his investments will determine whether his later years will be secure. Along with the Mining Engineering Handbook, two key books should be included in the mining executive&apos;s library. These are Venita Van Caspel&apos;s The Power of Money Dynamics and Benjamin J. Stein&apos;s Financial Passages. These books contain the basic concepts of personal financial planning so critical to an individual&apos;s financial survival. Venita points out the simple formula that is the key to financial independence: Time + Money + American Free Enterprise (Rate of Return) = Opportunity to Become Financially Independent Chart 1 shows that this is not a trite formula. The chart shows the dramatic effects of compounding over time. The chart also shows at various yields what a $2000 a year Individual Retirement Account (IRA) contribution will accumulate. Chart 1 (from Money magazine) is based on the future value of an ordinary annuity. It shows that the key to amassing a small fortune by the time a person reaches his 50s is starting to save methodically in his 20s. This, coupled with the highest yields consistent with safety of principal will ensure financial security. There are significant effects from compounding money over time. Every year the decision is put off to save for later years will cost a person dearly by the time he reaches his 50s. For example, consider the decision to put off for one year a $2000 IRA investment at a 12% return. Starting it at age 31 instead of 30 will cost the executive almost $100,000 by age 65. What if the executive waits until age 35 to get started with his $2000 a year investment? He will then lose nearly $400,000 by age 65. Stated another way, the executive costs himself this $400,000 simply because he did not invest $167 a month for five years. $167 a month - that&apos;s less than an inexpensive second car payment. This $400,000 pool of money could provide the executive a $40,000 a year income at age 65, assuming a 10% return on invest-

The pressure of the gas in equilibrium with sphalerite has been determined in the temperature range of 680&apos; to 825°C, using the Knudsen orifice method. A comparison of these experimental pressures with those calculated from thermal data and from other equilibrium measurements shows that the vapor above sphalerite is predominantly dissociated ZnS. Equations have been given for correctly calculating dissociation pressures using the Knudsen orifice method. It has been shown that the experimentally determined pressure is the same, whether the zinc sulphide is sphalerite or not, or a mixture of wurtzite and sphalerite. CONFLICTING points of view appear in the literature on the constitution of the vapor in equilibrium with solid zinc sulphide in the vicinity of 800°C. By comparing the dissociation pressure calculated from thermodynamic data and the vapor-pressure determination of ZnS by Veselovski,1 Lumsden2 has concluded that the vapor consists largely of dissociated ZnS. Sen Gupta,&apos; however, concludes from his spectroscopic determinations that the vapor is largely ZnS molecules. In view of the fact that the thermodynamically calculated&apos; dissociation pressure is higher than that experimentally measured by Veselovski, it seemed in order to repeat Veselovski&apos;s measurements. Experimental Procedure The method used for the determination of the pressures in this papel- is the Knudsen effusion cell. The apparatus and procedure were described in a previous paper- from this laboratory on the determination of the vapor pressure of silver. The only difference is that the Knudsen cell in this work is made from platinum and there is no external cover around the cell. The cell is an ordinary platinum crucible of 2.2 cm top diameter with a capsule cover. It was thought that platinum might stand up at these temperatures to the solid and gaseous ZnS, since it was found that the weight of the platinum cell itself did not change appreciably on heating ZnS in it at the working temperatures. To insure that reaction of the zinc sulphide with the cell was not giving&apos; a false value, a stabilized zirconia cell was employed for check runs. Fig. 1 shows the comparison, which is satisfactory. Veselovski previously had measured the vapor pressure of ZnS using a silica Knudsen effusion cell. On repeating his experiment in this laboratory, it was found that ZnS at-tacked the silica cell, giving it a marked frosty appearance. This led to the belief that Veselovski&apos;s result:; may be in error. Also, he was operating at pressures above the range ordinarily considered safe for the Knudsen method. The effusion rate was measured by weighing the cell before and after each run. The weight loss during heating to temperature and cooling down was measured and subtracted from the weight loss during the actual run. The zinc sulphide used in this investigation was from two sources: Fisher cp grade, and a sample of pure sphalerite supplied by Mr. E. A. Anderson of the New Jersey Zinc Co. Before and after the series of runs with Fisher ZnS, X-ray analysis showed that both wurtzite and sphalerite were present. However, the ratio of sphalerite to wurtzite increased. All measurements were made below the transition temperature which has been reported" to be 1020°C. The data obtained in this investigation are tabulated in Table I. The pressure was calculated by the usual Knudsen formula" on the assumption that ZnS molecules were effusing. From these data, using pure sphalerite in the platinum Knudsen cell, the vapor pressure of ZnS, in mm of Hg, as a function of temperature is given by the solid line in Fig. 1. The best straight line, as determined by the method of least squares, is given by 14405 logpzns =-14405/T +11.032. A comparison of these results with Veselovski&apos;s shows that his results are about 50 pct lower. Discussion The vapor in equilibrium with solid zinc sulphide in the temperature range of this study will consist of Zn, S2, and ZnS mol, since other species of zinc and sulphur&apos; are relatively unstable. The question to be settled is whether or not ZnS is largely dissociated. The derivation8 which follows gives the method of calculating the pressure of zinc and sulphur over solid ZnS, assuming complete dissociation, from Knudsen cell data. "The important task of metallurgical accounting that used to be done manually is being more and more automated. Currently available solutions can generate accounting reports without human intervention or almost. However, the practical conditions for fully delivering the promised benefits of those solutions are sometimes overlooked either by end-users or by integrators. The mere fact of filling reports with values satisfying several constraints such as mass conservation constraints does not, by itself, ensure a high quality metallurgical balance. Since managers make decisions based on these reports, it is logical that the metallurgical balance performance be monitored and retrofits be made if necessary. Such retrofits may involve modifications to the measurement strategy or the reduction of the spatial resolution of the material balance model. This requires an estimability and redundancy analysis (ERA) tool to assess the feasibility of the modified model. Since determining by hand the estimability and redundancy of a set of non measured and measured variables is not trivial, even for a medium-sized mineral processing plant, a dedicated ERA tool brings valuable assistance to the metallurgist in charge. The present paper aims first at explaining how a state of the art metallurgical balance is a key enabler for the adoption of a smart process plants paradigm (SPPP) in mineral processing. Then, the fundamentals behind the building of an ERA algorithm are introduced and illustrated by two examples. Finally, the role of an ERA tool in achieving state of the art metallurgical accounting and how it contributes to delivering additional value are discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe Smart Process Plants Paradigm (SPPP)Mineral processors have seen an increase lately in external pressures toward operating performance improvements. Indeed, the globalization of the mining business is a key driver to becoming more productive, more responsive to market changes, to improving corporate governance and reporting standards. The Canadian Clean Power Coalition (CCPC) was created in 2001 to protect and enhance Canada’s vast coal and other carbon-based resource wealth, and to ensure that environmental public policy decisions recognize that these resources are a Canadian asset, not an environmental liability. To achieve its mandate, CCPC has undertaken to demonstrate technologies for use in new coal-fired power plants to control air emissions including carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulphur dioxides (SOx), mercury (Hg), and particulates (PM). The first phase of the demonstration project assessed three existing technologies for coal-fired power plants that reduce all emissions, including CO2, to levels equivalent to or below that of gas-fired power plants. The technologies considered in this phase included integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC), ‘oxyfuel’ combustion, and amine scrubbing of pulverized coal. These technologies were evaluated with three coal types: Eastern bituminous, western sub-bituminous, and lignite coals. This paper presents the studies, conclusions concerning the capital and operating costs of these technologies, the cost of electricity produced (with CO2 removed), and the cost per tonne of CO2 avoided. It also discusses the potential for using captured CO2 for enhanced oil recovery, and possible technology enhancements for improving the competitiveness of gasification of low-rank western Canadian coals. The second ongoing phase of CCPC’s work includes the design and construction of a commercial-scale plant to demonstrate the feasibility of integrated gas combined cycle (IGCC) and/or polygeneration technologies and the potential for using the CO2 generated for enhanced recovery of conventional oil.

"Gold gravity recovery circuits utilizing enhanced gravity separators have become an integral part of many of the modern gold processing plants. Thus, efforts to improve the operating efficiency have been a topic of interest for metallurgists for many years. As part of this endeavour, a methodology to estimate the portion of gold in the ore that could be recovered by gravity separation (gravity recoverable gold or GRG) was developed at McGill University. It has been reported in the literature that the gold content estimated with this methodology is the theoretical maximum that is available for gravity recovery that could only be approached but never achieved. A comparison of GRG recovery obtained in the laboratory with the actual recovery in the plant shows that plants recover between one-third to two-thirds of the value predicted by the laboratory test.Research conducted at COREM shows that particle shape transformation during grinding is a major cause of the discrepancy (even though the bleed percent processed, the quality of cyclone classification and the operating conditions of the gravity separator also contribute to the difference). To analyze the gold particle shapes and their deportment, samples were collected from different streams of a grinding-gravity circuit in a gold plant and compared to a concentrate sample from the standard GRG test. A particle characterization methodology based on gold morphology was developed. GRG mapping in a conventional grinding-gravity circuit and the transformation of GRG into non-GRG, as mainly explained by gold particle reshaping, will be discussed. The knowledge gained from the shape analysis will be used to develop shape distributions and partition curves for the classification of shapes.INTRODUCTIONGravity concentration using centrifugal concentrators has gained increasing popularity since the invention of the enhanced gravity concentrators in the nineteen eighties. Among these, the semicontinuous centrifugal gravity concentrators are most commonly used for recovering gold and platinum group minerals (PGM) from grinding circuit streams. The benefits of gold gravity recovery are now well understood and the acceptance by the mining industry is overwhelming. The occurrence of reasonable amounts of gravity recoverable gold (GRG) in an ore prompts gold mills to install gravity circuits. Thus, the increased use of gravity concentration has necessitated a better understanding of the behavior of gold in grinding circuits and of the factors affecting the performance of the gravity concentrator (Laplante et al., 1995). Due to its high density (19.3 g/cm3 when pure) and malleability properties, gold tends to accumulate in circulating streams making it attractive for gravity recovery. The gravity recovery units are typically installed on a bleed stream of the cyclone underflow, mill discharge or cyclone feed."

It is safe to say that of all the different materials that go to make up electrical machinery, iron is the most important. Upon its magnetic and electrical quality depends not only the efficiency of the machine but, to a very large extent, the cost. Aside from the mechanical strength, there are three characteristics of iron that are of importance in this connection, viz., magnetic hysteresis, electrical resistance, and magnetic permeability. In the homopolar machine, where the magnetic flux is unidirectional, permeability is the only important factor, but in all other machines the flux is reversed in one or more parts and causes losses due to hysteresis and eddy currents. The eddy-current loss depends largely upon the electrical resistance of the iron; the higher the resistance the lower the loss, under otherwise identical conditions. These hysteresis and eddy-current losses cause heating of the machine, and as they depend upon the magnetic density in the iron, this density must be regulated so that the heating shall not be excessive. If the hysteresis and eddy-current losses and the permeability of the magnetic circuit will permit an increase in the magnetic density, or, in other words, a decrease in the amount of iron, this in turn will mean a decrease in the amount of copper needed, with a consequent decrease in the copper loss. It is thus seen that, indirectly as well as directly, the above characteristics have an important bearing on both the efficiency and the cost of electrical machinery. In general, it may be said that iron for electrical machinery should have the following characteristics: (1) low hysteresis loss, (2) high electrical resistance, and (3) high permeability. These are the characteristics that investigators have been striving to attain since electrical machinery first came into use. Until the beginning of the present century, Swedish charcoal iron was regarded as the best grade of iron for magnetic purposes, and even now it ranks high among the various grades used. Seismic geophysical methods have long been used by geologists and geophysicists to delineate subsurface features. These techniques work because different types and strengths of soil and rock transmit energy at different velocities. The Crosshole-Downhole tests (CH-DH) and seismic refraction survey (RS) are among the most used methods in engineering applications to obtain the elastic properties of subsurface layers. As a result, seismic methods have evolved into a cost-effective tool for rapidly determining depth to bedrock in engineering and construction projects. The seismic methods are best suited to sediment thickness analysis, bedrock quality determination and detection of the presence of weaknesses in the bedrock before the erection of any civil engineering structures such as bridges, tunnels, dams and portals. Seismic methods are also useful in estimating the rippability of bedrock ahead of construction. These methods are particularly useful for large-scale projects that require a significant number of drill holes, resulting in a substantial investment of time and costs for drilling. The CH-DH and RS methods are typically comparable in total cost to drilling, but provide significantly more information in 2-D and 3-D and therefore reduce the likelihood of conceptually oversimplifying the subsurface conditions. The above mentioned methodologies were considered to be the most appropriate geophysical methods for investigating the shallow structure and the dynamic soil properties of the area where the Ilarionas Dam is scheduled to be constructed. The main target of this work was to prove the potential of geophysical methods in providing accurate information to the civil engineer and to obtain information on the dynamic soil and rock properties for earthquake design analyses for the dam construction. Specifically, nine refraction seismic profiles and three cross-hole-downhole seismic tests were implemented to determine the subsurface conditions of the study area. The tests determined the shear and compression wave velocity profiles versus depth and other crucial parameters such as Young and Rigidity modules. Furthermore, they allowed the detailed 2-D mapping (along several profiles of the study area) of the subsurface variation of the soil and rock dynamic moduli.

In the art of cementation a controversy has been going on for years as to whether solid or gaseous carbon is the active agent in carburizing steel. More recently opinion has crystallized into a compromise to the effect that carburizing is a gaseous cementation of steel in the presence of solid carbon. The importance of this theory has a particular bearing upon the work to be described. In the art of carburizing, use is commonly made of such words as &apos;&apos; Catalytic" "atomic," "nascent" and "activated," in an attempt to describe the process. These words are used indiscriminately. For instance, the gas is said to be "catalytic" and carbon to be "nascent," or vice versa. In using these expressions, investigators are confirming the acceptance in their minds of the active conditions of both gas and carbon in the cementation process. Reactions at Metal Surfaces For many years attention has been directed to the consideration of reactions that occur on metal surfaces. When heated under the influence of certain metals a complex gas will be broken down and one of the constituents thereof usually found to be very active chemically in combining with the metal. The process of nitriding is an example of this type of reaction. In this case ammonia (NH3) breaks down at the metal surface and the nitrogen which is thus liberated reacts with the surface to form a nitride whereas molecular nitrogen not so liberated is inert and will not react chemically with the metal. Whatever term or terms may be used to describe such reactions, the fact remains that they are highly important and valuable in their commercial applications. Since the metal surface plays so important a part in these reactions, it is evident that any accumulation of reaction products thereon interferes seriously with the progress of the reactions. For this reason it is desirable to remove all such products as rapidly as they are formed in order to bring active gas into contact with the surface and thus facilitate the desired reactions.
