In pyrometallurgical operations, structural integrity of a high temperature furnace plays a crucial role in the overall safety, profitability and ecological footprint of the plant. Furnace integrity is related to how reliable a furnace is and it can be compromised, for example, by having poor operating and maintenance practices, an inefficient cooling system and flaws in the overall furnace design. These flaws and poor practices might lead to unexpected shutdowns, production losses, increased emissions, or worse. This paper presents the main factors to consider when engineering a furnace and developing its operating practices, while ensuring safe and reliable operations without compromising process efficiency and quality of the final products. In this respect, Outotec’s solutions for the cooling system and for automation systems like PROSCON, Process Advisor, Sentinel and our Smelting Information Management System, are also introduced.

Cyanide is highly toxic to humans and other organisms. Concentrations of RCN as low as 0.05 ppm can be lethal to fish (Scott and Ingle', 1981). In wet climates and in colder climates where natural degradation is slow, it is becoming mandatory to destroy cyanides in effluents before they can be discharged. The disposal of spent gold ore as tailings from cyanide heap leach processing facilities is a matter of concern to the public, the mining industry, and regulatory agencies. South Dakota mining laws and regulations require that spent ore be neutralized to a suitable level with respect to cyanide before disposal (Durkin, 1990). To safeguard the environment and protect ground-water and surface-water supplies adequately, a reliable test is needed to determine the amount of cyanide in the solid spent ore.

The selection of the production level elevation is one of the most critical strategic decisions faced by large-scale block or panel caving projects. This elevation largely affects project timelines, capital expenditures, resource recovery, and may even constrain the mine’s maximum production capacity. Over the years, many computational tools have been developed to assist in this decision, most of them based on the same principle of maximizing the project value given its production level elevation. However, for large and inclined deposits, or those extending significantly in the vertical dimension and where extraction cannot be achieved from a single level, traditional selection techniques involving multiple production horizons often lead to suboptimal results. This paper proposes a methodology ensuring that the selection of production level elevations in a multiple horizons (“lifts”) case is globally optimized. Input parameters include economic and cost variables, maximum extractable column height, and deepening costs. The methodology is demonstrated through a real case study to illustrate its potential impact on project value.

The mining industry is a unique space. It is one in which geologists and chemists can intersect with computer and data science professionals daily. The industry requires expertise in not just mining and metallurgical engineering, but also electrical, mechanical, environmental and more. It requires expertise in worker health and safety, behavioral science, finance and economics, as well as human resources management. The locations of mining operations are often in remote corners, and for underground activities, they are unlike anything else in the world. The industry presents those who join it a wealth of opportunities, but often struggles to overcome incorrect perceptions of safety, labor and environmental standards, making it difficult to recruit and retain employees at a time of increased demand for mined materials.

"This paper describes the engineering and construction activities of the ""design-build"" project awarded to the joint venture of Foundation-Comstock-Janin for the construction of the plant and wharf facilities, camp site, power plant and all supporting services. As a member of the Foundation Group of companies at that time, Fenco actecl as consulting and design engineers for the project. Particular emphasis is given to the problems which adversely affected design and construction activities due to prevailing arctic conditions and the remote location of the project. The paper also describes the approach taken in the investigation of the site and soil conditions as well as the selection of the special structures for the 225,000-toncapacity fibre storage building, the wharf structure for 50,000-dwt vessels, and the 1,000-tph-capacity reclaiming and ship-loading facilities . It further covers the logistics problems and the scheduling activities related to the short duration of the shipping season, and the transportation of equipment and mate1•ials by sea as well as by air."

Increased awareness of a healthy work environment is common to all industries and the stone industry is no exception. The presence of operating diesel equipment, welding, stone production blasting, and silica dust in a working environment all contribute to air quality issues in underground stone mines. Particularly recognized is the exposure of workers to diesel particulate matter (DPM). Recent regulations call for a DPM standard of 160TC ug/m3 (TC = Total Carbon). The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted research to improve the ventilation of these mines and consequently reduce the exposure of workers to harmful airborne contaminants. The results have shown that the ventilation of underground stone mines can be significantly enhanced using improved ventilation controls and techniques. Large-opening stone mines present specialized ventilation challenges because their entries are much larger than in other types of mines. Most stone mines have entries about 40 feet wide and up to 30 feet high, with bench areas that may extend even higher. These large entries present the positive opportunity to move large air quantities at relatively low mine fan pressures resulting in lower fan horsepower and reduced operating costs. However, the difficulty in ventilating large-opening mines is that even with large air volumes, the air velocity is often less than 100 feet/minute. Higher ventilation velocities more quickly dilute and remove contaminants from the face areas. Higher ventilation airflow velocities can be achieved by effective ventilation planning and proper choice of ventilation fans.

"The optimal profile of a rock slope under given geometry constraint is investigated by means of the upper bound method of limit analysis. The optimal condition corresponds to maximizing stability factor. It is assumed that rock failure condition is suitably described by the Hoek-Brown criterion. Genetic algorithm is applied for locating the optimal profile. The optimal profiles turn out to be concave profiles but there are heaps around the toes of the slopes. Compared with plane profiles, the percentage of increase in stability factor can reach up to nearly 50%. The key geometry parameters of the optimal profiles are provided for practical use. The new upper bound formulation is capable of computing the stability factors of slopes of any shape, thus the stability status of a slope under man-made excavation can be monitored during the whole construction period.INTRODUCTIONIn mining industry, man-made slopes are excavated to create working surfaces. It is important to optimize the slope profile in order to maximize slope stability under certain geometry constraint. For instance, when the height and width of an excavation are assigned, a plane profile AC (see in Fig. 1) is widely applied in engineering practice, but it has been proved not the best one in terms of safety (Utili & Nova, 2007; Cala, 2007). A vertical profile ABC is the one with least stability. Thus, it can be deduced that there is a profile within the domain of the rectangle ABCD providing the highest stability. Cala (2007) compared the difference of convex and concave profiles in stability using strength reduction technique. According to Cala (2007), circular concave slopes can increase the maximum slope inclination under given factor of safety. Besides, based on upper bound theory of limit analysis, Utili & Nova (2007) assumed a logarithmic spiral profile to prove it is more stable than a plane profile in terms of the stability factor. Although the above studies attempted to seek the best circular or logarithmic spiral profiles, none of them considered the arbitrary shape of the optimal profile and its contribution to enhance slope stability."

This report describes a computer-based model for estimating the tangible costs of injuries and deaths from work-related accidents in underground coal mines. The study undertook to identify and quantify the elements of accident costs, including field visits to coal mines, insurance carriers, and public agencies. The mathematical models developed for each tangible element of accident cost are presented in Volume I of the report. A listing of the computer programs which comprise the model and instructions for using the programs are presented in Volume II. Statistical distributions of mining family characteristics, data on 95 miners killed in underground accidents, and other basic data used to develop the model are presented in Volume III. Application of the model to a data base of 9,286 accidents which occured in underground bituminous coal mines during 1974 yielded a total of $56,900,000 in tangible costs to industry, mining families, and public agencies. Loss of income to the families of miners injured or killed in these accidents accounted for 47 percent of the total.

A phase field model is developed to simulate the performance of SOFC electrodes. By solving the conduction equations on both the electrolyte and electrode phases, and incorporating the three-dimensional microstructure and reaction front at triple phase boundaries, the current-voltage relation of an electrode is directly simulated. By further coupling it to our recently developed coarsening model, we are able to investigate the effect of initial microstructure on the performance degradation in SOFC electrode. This model is applied to LSM-YSZ cathodes with different LSM volume fraction. The volume fraction effect on the electrode performance and its degradation rate has been analyzed and discussed.

"Post-grouted drilled shafts (PGS) are a deep foundation system in which grout is injected at high pressure throughout the tip after the drilled shaft has been installed. Pressure grouting of drilled shaft tips can significantly increase the ultimate capacity and stiffness of drilled shafts. Conventionally constructed drilled shafts usually require higher axial deformation to develop the available side friction and the tip resistance simultaneously. They also tend to have higher tip compressibility and reduced end bearing capacity due to disturbance at the bottom of excavation during drilled shaft construction. PGS foundations have been found to be a cost-effective solution to compensate for this capacity reduction and/or compressibility increase. PGS construction procedure counterbalances tip compressibility and end-bearing capacity reduction. The tip grouting also has a pre-stressing effect over the shaft side friction since the drilled shaft tends to move upwards during the pressure grouting of the tip. After grouting, a bulb tends to form at the pile tip pre-compressing any disturbed material and, in certain cases, increasing the tip area, thus increasing shaft tip capacity.PGS load-settlement predictions using a load transfer approach are presented in this paper and compared with corresponding load test data. The paper also presents the main findings of load transfer analyses that were carried out to investigate the potential different factors that may be contributing to the observed improved performance of PGS over conventional drilled shafts. Results show that the two main factors, that may have a significant contribution on the overall performance of the foundation by increasing its ultimate capacity at any given level of settlement, are the stress-reversal of the skin friction and the formation of a grout bulb at the tip. The grout bulb tip contributes primarily through the increased tip area and to a lesser extent through increased stiffness and strength of the soil in the vicinity of the pile tip."

The Iberian Pyrite Belt (SW Spain and Portugal) contains one of the largest reserves of pyrite in the world with mining activities dating back to prehistoric times. About one hundred abandoned mine wastes and galleries release a huge acidity and metal load to the Tinto and Odiel rivers. Once the mining activity is over, polluting discharges can persists for decades or even centuries with no specific responsible entity. In-situ passive remediation technologies are especially suitable for these orphan sites. The concept is to insert a reactive porous material in the natural flow path of contaminated surface and ground waters, and it is implemented through infiltration ponds and reactive barriers, respectively. Calcium carbonate pea-size gravel is the common alkalinity supplier to neutralize acidity and precipitate metals. These remediation systems have been traditionally implemented in coal mines. However, the acid drainages from the Iberian Pyrite Belt contain metal concentrations one to two orders of magnitude higher than those from coal mines and require special designs to avoid quick clogging or passivation (coating) of the grains of reactive material. To overcome these problems, a Dispersed Alkaline Substrate (DAS) mixed from fine-grained limestone sand and a coarse inert matrix (e.g. wood chips) was developed. The small grains provide a large reactive surface and dissolve almost completely before the growing layer of precipitates passivates the substrate. The high porosity and the dispersion of nuclei for precipitation on the inert surfaces retard clogging. However, limestone dissolution only raises pH to values around 6.5, which is sufficient to precipitate the hydroxides of trivalent metals (Al, Fe), but it is not alkaline enough to remove divalent metals. Magnesium oxide, which hydrates to Mg hydroxide upon contact with water, buffers the solution pH between 8.5 and 10. A DAS system replacing limestone with caustic magnesium oxide has been tested to be very efficient to remove divalent metals (Zn, Cd, Mn, Cu, Co, Ni, Pb) from drainage previously treated with limestone.

Stemming plugs are used as an accessory in drilling and blasting industry. They supplement conventional stemming material (i.e. drill cutting) with retention of gases in the drill hole that result in better fragmentation of rock and improved explosive utilization. Better fragmentation and explosive utilization along with economic benefits enhance efficacy of the project. Incorporation of stemming plugs in drilling and blasting industry is in exercise for about thirty years. The efficiency of stemming plugs is a key factor in their rising induction in mining industry. Different studies have been conducted on the economic viability of these plugs. The focus of this paper is the selection of stemming plugs for a bench blasting operation and the examination of blasting operation efficiency based on ergonomics and human factors. Three types of stemming plugs were evaluated during multiple blasts at a limestone quarry. Their performance was evaluated using split desktop software. Based on the human factors plastic molded stemming plug (stemming plug-1) was found to be the best among all selected plugs. INTRODUCTION Surface mines and quarrying operations heavily depend on bench blasting to achieve high volumetric targets and production demands. Use of explosives is the most economic method adopted for rock breakage and movement. Extensive research had been performed to enhance explosives energy utilization. This include changing the drilling pattern, application of air decks, stemming plugs, and use of other supportive devices. Optimization of explosive energy has been a major concern in those mines that rely on drilling and blasting operation to carry out main production. Due to continually increasing cost, efficient mining demands, and associated hazards of using explosives, it is necessary to utilize explosives at their best. Efficiency of a blasting operation is generally evaluated by the fragmentation size. From post blast conditions at blasting site to efficiency of processing plant, anything can be affected due to improper blast resulting in bad fragmentation. Better fragmentation is necessity for better operation of the system along with consideration of the safety of operation, environmental issues and related costs. For developing a blast design, an engineer should always attempt to minimize the cost of operation without compromising with acceptable technical and safety necessities [1]. Blast performance is dependent on many different factors associated with the process. These factors have been gauged as blast geometry, explosive specification, and rock mass properties [2]. Similarly, in 2013 Mohammad et al. concluded that fragmentation dynamics depends on blast hole diameter, primer, spacing, stemming, burden, and delay timing for blasting operation [1]. At the work site where this study was performed, blast holes were filled by drill cuttings and muds to help in confining gases. In a blast hole, gas confinement helps in better rock fragmentation along with reduced flyrocks. This practice is most common in many countries including Pakistan. Due to lack of homogenized particle size, the effectiveness of confinement is variable and majorly based on the size of stemming. Extremely small sized drill cuttings often result in hole blow out along with flyrocks from the collar. This improper blast energy will result in poor blast, bad impacts on environment, and reduced operational efficiency. In addition to the stemming material, the length of stemming is also a prime consideration. The decrease in stemming length will increase the quantity of explosive in the blast hole and an increase in stemming material generally improves stemming performance.

For the last decade, we have read about the great technical innovation that is coming to the mining industry that will increase safety and productivity. There is consensus that it will be a technical innovation that will produce a step change in mining costs and outputs (as opposed to bigger machines or less people); however, this innovation (while freely available) has not taken hold in the industry. While there are a few mines that have embraced technology, the majority of underground mines simply do not have the expertise or technical capability to implement innovation and automation.With unexploited mineral deposits becoming deeper and more remote, and thus more hazardous to mine, telepresence offers the ability to remotely execute production tasks while separating personnel from hazards. As the technologies required to deliver telepresence mature, the potential for there to be no personnel underground during production activities is becoming a reality (the ‘dark factory’). So significant is the capacity of telepresence to mitigate risk, it is proposed that it be included as a separate entry in the hierarchy of hazard mitigation controls.Technical innovation such as the optimised short-term interval control of the production process and the automation of underground mobile fleets offer significant increases in production along with lower operating costs. This paper explores the most critical components for the successful implementation of technology in underground mining; redundant, robust and high-bandwidth communications networks to carry data from distributed networks of smart sensors and to convey teleoperation commands; and high-definition video to provide operators with detailed, real-time data. The days of analogue ‘leaky feeder’ as a base case for communications are over. The human resources required to support the expected wave of innovation are significant and will be difficult to maintain in remote areas as the same skills and expertise are in demand in other industries.The paper highlights barriers to innovation in the mining industry, and a lack of technical and scientific expertise within the industry to be able to identify, implement and manage technologies that can increase safety and productivity. As well, an over-reliance on basic net present value (NPV) financial analysis that is used in the industry punishes investment in technology (capital expenditure; CAPEX) and accepts higher operating expenditure (OPEX) due to the discounting of future savings in operating costs.CITATION:Cronin, J, 2017. Early in 1965 the Surface Combustion Division of the Midland-Ross Corporation was awarded the contract to engineer and construct a taconite pelletizing plant for the National Steel pellet plant, administered by the Hanna Mining Co., near Keewatin, Minn. This plant, which will have an annual capacity of 2,400,000 long tons, will produce pellets from magnetite concentrate using a new process developed through a joint research program by Midland-Ross, Hanna Mining, and the National Steel Corp. The work that culminated in the decision to construct this plant is the result of a research program for the development of the Midland-Ross heat fast process for the production of prereduced or metallized pellets. PELLETIZING PROCESS There are many acceptable methods for producing oxide pellets from ground iron ores and concentrates, and all of these give an acceptable product for blast furnace utilization. The vertical shaft furnace, the traveling grate, and the grate-kiln have been installed in many pelletizing plants in the northern hemisphere; therefore, the acceptance of these methods and the problems associated with them are well understood. However, this research project investigated a method for improving upon these processes to produce a high quality oxide pellet at a low operating cost.

Geometallurgical modelling is increasingly being incorporated into mineral resource modelling and estimation as a means of increasing efficiency, decreasing operating costs and reducing risk in mining operations. Traditional geostatistical workflows for geometallurgical modelling face several difficulties, in particular, related to the non-additivity of process response variables, to highly heterotopic data sets and/or to preferential sampling designs, all of which may explain why most attempts to estimate geometallurgical response variables from assay data and mineralogy are still based on statistics and machine learning. The aim of the work presented here is to demonstrate the applicability of geostatistics to estimate copper recovery from copper sulfide ores at the Prominent Hill Iron Oxide Copper-Gold (IOCG) deposit in Australia. As recovery is non-additive, the preferred workflow is the joint estimation of the masses of metal in the feed and in the concentrate, both of which are additive variables. While the mass of metal in the feed can be estimated from abundant online assay analyses, the mass of metal in the concentrate can only be estimated from a very limited number of laboratory-scale batch flotation tests. Traditional approaches to estimating the masses of metal in the feed and in the concentrate, such as simple and ordinary co-kriging, are described and discussed. A modified version of co-kriging is introduced, which incorporates linear relationships between the mean values of the input variables, in addition to a spatial correlation model. Co-kriging with related means is shown to outperform traditional simple and ordinary co-kriging in terms of precision, accuracy and consistency of the estimates, and offers a practical and efficient tool to deal with highly heterotopic and preferential sampling designs.

The historical progression in installed electric furnace smelting capacity of some 1650 calcium, chromium, manganese, nickel and silicon ferro-alloys furnaces is reviewed. Key increases in the inherent installed electrical capacity, often achieved through uprating furnaces, are identified. Possible factors facilitating such advances are explored, including: specific process engineering and pyrometallurgical enhancements (e.g., improved control over the consistency, size and chemical form of raw materials, extents of preheating and pre-reduction delivered into the furnace; and patterns of feed distribution); furnace electrical configuration (AC or DC; immersed, submerged-, shielded- or open-arc); form of electrode (graphite, self-baking or composite); furnace configuration (circular or rectangular; closed or open and 1-, 3- or 6- electrodes); better engineering and equipment designs (e.g., high-intensity cooling) and state of furnace electrical and metallurgical control systems. A view is presented on the prevailing state of evolution of the Mega-scale in ferro-alloy smelting and opportunities for still further improvements.

"The development of a mining project necessarily progresses through many steps, beginning with the identification of a mineral resource and continuing through project construction. Several classifications of engineering study development are described, including preliminary economic assessment (PEA) or scoping studies, prefeasibility studies (PFS), feasibility studies (FS) and regulatory codes, each with a specific project organizational objective. This paper addresses the PEA, PFS and FS types of reports that are used by companies to evaluate projects, meet regulatory requirements and seek financing. The minimum requirements for engineering studies, focusing on the needs of financial institutions considering investment in a project, are outlined. IntroductionThe financing of mining projects in recent years has come under increased scrutiny by financial institutions owing primarily to an increasing percentage of projects whose capital expenditures had overrun project budgets or had failed to produce the economic returns anticipated during the project development process. Often, unfavorable project outcomes are not the result of widespread failures of the project engineering process but arise from inadequate engineering in limited specific areas of the project scope, such as overestimated mineral reserve, inadequate mine design, insufficient metallurgical testing or underestimated capital costs. Mill facilities and process infrastructure typically are responsible for up to 80 percent of the capital expenditures required by greenfield mining projects. They are often the project areas where capital costs are inadequately developed, and consequently are the areas highly scrutinized by financial institutions. This paper offers a perspective on the level of engineering expected by financial institutions as a prerequisite to committing support to developing mining projects.The evaluation of a mining project from exploration through development and production is a lengthy and complicated process. Mine development commitment activities for a potential project are initiated when a mineral resource is identified and continue through to the start of construction. The technical feasibility and the economic viability of each project are determined during the phases of mine development with more detailed engineering data required at each stage. Regulations, such as the MINER Act of 2006, require the installation of redundant and secondary communication systems to assure that contact can be established with coal miners who may become trapped underground as a result of an event such as a fire, explosion or inundation. For half a century, the orientation towards underground communications has been that more complex systems better serve the coal miner. However, if a goal is to provide for an alternative means of establishing communication between the surface and trapped miners underground, then some of the technology employed should be simple, reliable and cost-effective. Coal mines spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on exploratory drillholes to characterize reserves, sometimes decades ahead of mine development. During the pre-mine planning phases, certain exploratory drillholes could be located and then outfitted with a simple communication link that would remain compatible with the continuing evolution of communication systems. Inexpensive links, whose locations would be accurately recorded, would be exposed by continuous miners during mine entry development, thereby allowing an underground phone to be connected to a surface station in the event of an emergency. A latent network of these communication links could be installed for less than $500 each, minimally affecting drilling and grouting operations, and could be designed to be compatible with many communication devices. This research examines methods and materials for incorporating an embedded communication link during pre-mine exploration drilling, addresses significant factors affecting its implementation, and presents a recommended design. Since mine plans are known to change, the objective is to minimize cost so that, if not used, the investment is minimal for a potential secondary means of communication between the surface and underground workings.

In Kiowa County, Okla., extensive deposits of clay are closely associated with pre-Cambrian anorthosites and gabbros. Investigation by the Bureau of Mines, including 1,723 feet of auger drilling, has shown the presence of very large quantities of clay containing between 20 and 25 percent alumina. All of the material contains large amounts of impurities, and even the best clays, selected for their relatively low content of iron, titanium, and magnesium, are unsuitable for the production of alumina by the sulfuric-acid process The soda-lime process gave somewhat better results, the product being nearer specification for commercial alumina. The clays are not amenable to beneficiation by simple sedimentation processes, and the alumina content could not easily be increased to produce material suitable for any alumina process.

Almost nine years after the assertion of enormous and pervasive federal control over coal mines by means of the Federal Coal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1969, 30 USC Section 801 et seq, as amended by the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977 (which basically increases the punitive powers of government) a brief assessment of some of the underlying causes, present status, and possible alternatives to governmental control is appropriate. In a governmental system based upon the principles of democracy and the protection of individual freedoms and constitutional rights the ultimate mechanism for abrogation of these rights is the creation and exploitation of fear. Machiavelli in rendering advice concerning the power over men provided by fear stated, "... it is much safer to be feared than loved .. fear preserves (the government) by a dread of punishment which never fails." The Prince. Within the context of the assumption of control by the government over industries or segments of our population - popular fear provides a convenient and almost necessary mechanism for the avoidance by law or regulation of democratic principles. The popular fear of coal mines has been successfully exploited by various goal oriented groups in the past and most recently by a Congressional constituency with a vested interest in controlling the mines through regulation.
