Mineral Resources estimation plays a crucial role in the profitability of the future of mining operations. The conventional geostatistical methods used for grade estimation require expertise, understanding and knowledge of the spatial statistics, resource modelling, geology, mining engineering as well as clean validated data to build accurate block models. However, the geostatistical models are sensitive to changes in data and would have to be rebuilt on newly acquired data with different characteristics, which has proved to be a time-consuming process. Machine learning methods have in recent years been proposed as an alternative to the geostatistical methods to alleviate the problems these might suffer from in Mineral Resource estimation. In this paper, a systematic literature review of machine learning methods used in Mineral Resource estimation is presented. This has been conducted on such studies published during the period 1990 to 2019. The types, performances, and capabilities, of several machine learning methods have been evaluated and compared against each other, and against the conventional geostatistical methods. The results, based on 31 research studies, show that the machine learningbased methods have outperformed the conventional grade estimation modelling methods. The review also shows there is active research on applying machine learning to grade estimation from exploration through to exploitation. Further improvements can be expected if advanced machine learning techniques are to be used.

With the introduction in recent years of third-generation interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) techniques, monitoring of mine slopes, benches and surrounding areas has benefitted from increased accuracy and coverage. Fundamental research into point and distributed scattering techniques has pushed the use of InSAR to provide higher spatial and height resolution. In this paper we discuss the operationalisation of third-generation InSAR techniques and show its application to active mining operations.This paper will discuss the use of multiple independent measurements of ground movement obtained from operationally-derived InSAR products over a wide variety of deformation areas within an active open pit mining operation (ie pit slopes, dewatering depressions, tailings containment and waste dumps). A technique that shortens the time between observations (increased observation frequency) and provides ongoing estimates of measurement accuracy will be described. The methodology exploits available satellite data by using multiple satellites and multiple beams. The paper will also examine factors in the design of a mine survey with third-generation InSAR and illustrate some of the necessary engineering trade-offs to efficiently monitor a mine from space.Overall, this paper aims to demonstrate the capabilities and advantages of operational third-generation InSAR techniques for ground movement monitoring of mining operations and provide a framework for proper design of a mine InSAR survey.CITATION:Henschel, M D, Sato, S, Ahola, R and McParland, M A, 2014. Recently, the natural fibers have been studied as alternative reinforcement material to the use of synthetic fibers. Aiming to improve the properties of natural fibers composites, it is investigated the use of natural fibers fabrics, since they provide multidirectional reinforcement and enables the introduction of a larger fiber volume fraction. In this work, it was investigated the tensile behavior of the epoxy matrix composites reinforced with different volumefractions offabric made of Ramie, a highly resistant lignocellulosic fiber. The specimens were made by pressing the fabric with liquid resin to guarantee total impregnation, and then cutting the fabric in the mold format. Finally ,the fabric layers were placed into the mold with the liquid resin and catalyst. They were cured for 24 h and tested. The results revealed an increase in the tensile strength and almost no effect in the elastic modulus with the increase of fabric volume fraction.

Cemented backfilling has enabled underground hard rock mines to extract orebodies more safely with improved ore recovery. It is important to estimate the minimum required strength parameters for a backfill mix by optimizing the binder percentage to enable cost-effective and safe stoping operations. We conducted three-dimensional numerical modelling to study the effect of various stoping parameters on the stability of a free-standing backfill wall. A Mohr-Coulomb material model was used for the backfill material and the rock-fill interface. A strength reduction technique, excluding friction angle, was employed to arrive at a minimum stable strength value for the backfill. For a given combination of strength values, the stability state of the backfill wall could be demarcated using a displacement and yield zone tracking method. The numerical modelling results are compared to some earlier theoretical models. From the simulations, a predictive equation is developed to predict the required strength parameters for a backfill mix to ensure a stable free-standing wall. Examples are given of the successful use of the predictive equation at some underground hard rock mine sites in India.

As indicated in the introduction to this paper, it is a sequel to that which I gave to the last annual meeting in Atlanta in march. This paper goes further into aspects of crushing and screening, primarily from the standpoint of circuit control. There has been little published by equipment manufacturers on this subject and this is the first paper on crushing circuit control to be sponsored by Allis-Chalmers corporation. By proper control over the use of crushing energy, we will be able to produce finished products from feed materials uti¬lizing minimum capital for the lowest cost of production. The subject will be discussed as follows. Firstly, we will look briefly at what we are trying to accomplish; Secondly, what is presently available in the way of technology; Thirdly, we will look at a suggested new system of control which will best fit the parameters of the normal crushing and screening operation; As a conclusion, I will summarize the advantages of the new system.

Current and potential dragline reclamation usage was evaluated for the U.S. coalfields based on data gathered and analyzed during field surveys, literature reviews and contacts with manufacturers. It was concluded that current wining plans have been adapted to federal and state strip mine and reclamation laws in ways which limit the potential for drag line reclamation systems at active mine sites. At abandoned conventional contour mine sites in steep-sloping areas such as central Appalachia, however, it was found that dragline reclamation systems have great potential application and may be the only practical solution to many reclamation problems. Alternative dragline systems were examined for restoring abandoned sites, and it was concluded that a tower excavator system offered superior characteristics and should be evaluated and developed under field conditions. A testing program was developed to provide a framework for the monitoring and analysis of cost, production and environmental data during a field demonstration of a tower excavator system.

When heated in the absence of oxygen, pyrite from refractory gold concentrates decomposes endothermically to pyrrhotite, releasing sulphur. The decomposition starts at the particle surface and progresses inwards, leaving an adhering layer of porous pyrrhotite. Use of the conventional shrinking-core model implicitly assumes a negligible partial pressure of sulphur in the bed, but this pressure is in fact at least equal to the equilibrium vapour pressure of sulphur over pyrite, constituting the principal control of the rate of decomposition. Further experiments showed a decrease in reaction rate as the conversion increased. Both phenomena are attributed to the persistence of non-isothermal conditions in the fluidised bed during pyrolysis, caused by the endothermic nature of the reaction and the relatively slow rates of heat transfer to particles and vapour removal from the bed. M. Gershon The article is an excellent one, providing a basis for the conduct of the major tasks in underground mine planning and scheduling. I object to only one word. Since that word is featured in the title, it is a strong objection. The word used erroneously is optimization. There is no optimization performed in the article. By definition, an optimization is an approach that yields the best of all possible solutions. We can limit this definition to its narrowest sense, the optimization techniques of operations research such as linear programming, or broaden it to include less sophisticated search procedures that find the best mine plan or schedule. No such claim is made in the article. No optimization of any kind is performed. The major tool used is a simulation, which, in truth, is probably more appropriate for this problem than any optimization. But simulation does not optimize. It only allows for quick evaluation of many options, leading to the selection of the best plan "of those tried," not "of all possible plans." This article, of course, is not the first mining paper to make this error. It seems that the word optimization is used more to impress people than to refer to any act of optimizing. It is used in a way that implies "try to optimize"or "come close to optimize," but not to really do it. It is usually appropriate to quietly ignore this error. But when Dr. Chatterjee, who has done so much good work in true optimization projects and whose work I have come to admire, makes such an error, it is time to publicly dispute it. Having discussed this very point with him in the past, I am sure that he will agree. If he can support this position in his response, perhaps people will start to listen and we can reduce the number of false claims of optimization. This should be easy for him in this case since the approach he used, simulation, is the more appropriate one anyway.

"San Pablo Dam is a 170-foot (52-meter)-high earthfill embankment, located approximately 10 miles (16 kilometers) north of downtown Oakland, California, that impounds a 38,600 acre-feet (47.6 million m3) reservoir for customers in the East Bay Municipal Utility District's (EBMUD's) service area. Seismic upgrades were designed and constructed in 2008 through 2010. Work included removal of an existing 140,000 cubic-yard (107,000 m3) downstream buttress, which was replaced with an enlarged 300,000 cubic-yard (230,000 m3) buttress founded on alluvium and colluvium that were improved in-place using Cement Deep Soil Mixing (CDSM) technology. The site characterization for the project, design of CDSM, reuse of CDSM spoils as construction materials, and environmental permitting have been described in five previously published professional papers.This paper provides a brief summary of the design of the seismic upgrades and presents the results of measurements made during and/or after construction including the variation of CDSM strengths with time, piezometric levels within the dam and foundation soils, and seepage flow rates. These measured values are compared to the values estimated during design of the seismic upgrades.INTRODUCTIONSan Pablo Reservoir is located approximately 10 miles (16 kilometers) north of downtown Oakland, California, as shown in Fig 1. As many as 50 million gallons (200,000 m3) per day pass through the reservoir for treatment and distribution to a portion of the 1.3 million customers served by EBMUD. The dam is founded mainly on alluvium and was originally built in 1920 using materials excavated from the left and right abutments consisting of siltstone, claystone, fine-grained sandstone, mudstone, and shale that were excavated and placed using hydraulic fill methods. The dam is located within two miles (three kilometers) of the Hayward Fault which is capable of a moment magnitude 7.25 earthquake.Because of the foundation materials, construction method, and proximity to the Hayward Fault, the dam has undergone a series of seismic improvements, including the placement of a downstream compacted earth buttress in 1967 and an upstream compacted earth buttress in 1979. In 2002, the State of California Division of Safety of Dams (DSOD) requested that EBMUD evaluate the seismic stability of San Pablo Dam, following the results of a study that same year that indicated a 62 percent chance of a greater than 6.7 magnitude earthquake striking the San Francisco Bay region between 2003 and 2032. The dam was evaluated and it was concluded that portions of the underlying foundation soils may liquefy during the maximum credible earthquake which could cause the dam to become unstable."

Grade Engineering®, integrated across the mine value chain, has a pivotal role to play in achieving step change reductions in energy and water usage in mine operations. High levels of gangue rejection in the mine can significantly improve mineral head grades and overall productivity. A highly successful example is described at the Minera San Cristóbal (MSC) operation. The nature of the mineralisation in their “intrusive” ore domains in particular has facilitated high rejection rates (75 % of the mass), with significant upgrading of metal to the “accepts” streams (equating to a 2.6 times upgrade in the intrinsic Nett Smelter Return). Results from a series of production trials have confirmed these strong upgrades, resulting in the transformation of mineralised “marginal wastes” to high grade ore feedstocks. If new approaches to more energy and water efficient comminution and separation technologies can also realise gangue rejection at finer sizes in the concentrator, then preconcentration strategies across the value chain also offer the promise of no wet tailings treatment facilities and greatly reduced volumes of waste streams. This “No Tails” strategy is discussed, along with the integrated technologies needed to realise its effect. The work suggests a pathway and insights of a sustainable future for the Minerals Industry, unconstrained by Energy and Water, along with no requirement to produce problematic disposal streams. This strategy has the potential to significantly reposition the social, environmental, financial, and regulatory context of existing and new mining opportunities.

"This paper addresses the initial results of a project to evaluate the suitability of copper mining tailings as raw material for the production of structural products using PMET’s patented technology. Preliminary testing indicated that high performance structural products were possible using these materials. A demonstration scale project produced approximately 1,500 bricks in various colors. These products fall under under ASTM C- 73 and were found to present properties suitable for severe weather applications. Although the products in this project were of typical brick dimensions, other products are possible, for example concrete block substitutes or pavers. These products from the PMET process are commercially known as Brixx. This paper will provide operational details of the production process, mineralogy and mechanical properties of the products.INTRODUCTIONPMET has developed process technology that can convert various siliceous waste materials into competent structural products. This technology is the subject of US patent # 6,068,803. In general, the process consists of mixing lime, water and the major feed stock, pressing to form a “green” shape, and curing the product in an autoclave for 6 hours with saturated steam at ~200oC. The curing process forms Tobermorite, which acts as a crystalline binder. Freeport-McMoRan approached PMET to see whether mine tailings from the Sierrita mine, containing significant amounts of clay, might be a suitable feed material for the production of structural products. “Brixx” is the commercial term used to describe the resultant structural product formed in the test work. This paper is a preliminary evaluation of a technology that is being considered by Freeport-McMoRan. This report is not an endorsement by Freeport-McMoRan of the process or products, nor is it a commitment to use this technology."

"Surface subsidence caused by underground room-and-pillar mining operations and by solution mining operations have been studied separately but never in combination. In 2008, FMC Minerals began using solution mining at its Westvaco Mine as a secondary extraction method in an area that had been previously mined using the room-and-pillar mining method. Mining regulations require that subsidence associated with underground mining activities be monitored and measured annually. Using Salt_Subsid, a subsidence software package from the Solution Mining Research Institute, and ArcGIS, Esri's mapping platform, researchers at Montana Tech were able to develop a relationship between measured surface mine subsidence and solution mining that can be used at the Westvaco Mine to estimate the production of trona from solution mining operations. Project backgroundFMC Minerals has increased the production of trona from its Westvaco Mine near Green River, WY, using solution mining as a secondary extraction method in an area previously mined using the room-and-pillar method. The area of interest was mined until 2001 with the use of a borer miner at a depth of approximately 488 m (1,600 ft). Currently, FMC determines the amount of trona produced using its solution mining operations by measuring the dissolved solids pumped from the mine. This approach, however, does not account for the location from which the trona was removed.The location from which the trona is removed and the size of the cavern created by the solution mining operations are important to FMC’s mine planning. FMC believed that with proper investigation of the subsidence at the Westvaco test site, a correlation might be found between surface subsidence measurements and the amount and location of trona production from the solution mining activities. The primary goal of this project, conducted by Montana Tech, was to find relationships between the measured subsidence and the solution mining activities. The project attempted to develop an equation that could be used to predict solution trona production based on measured subsidence. The project attempted to model the relationship between the measured surface subsidence and solution mining production using Salt_Subsid, an existing subsidence software package from the Solution Mining Research Institute (SMRI, Clarks Summit, PA) to estimate the location, size and shape of the solution mining cavern. This study would determine the program’s usefulness for locating and developing the cavern created by secondary solution mining activities. The subsidence and production data sets used in this study were collected over a seven-year period from 2008 through 2014."

The Jinping-I double curvature arch dam, located in the middle reach of the Yalong River and with a maximum height of 305 m, is the world highest dam of the same type that has been completed. Since the second and third periods of the reservoir impounding, after which the reservoir water level was raised by about 200 m, a significant amount of leakage was observed out of the drainage holes deployed in the lowest drainage tunnel at the left-bank abutment at EL. 1595 m, with a pressure of 0.3 MPa at one typical hole when it was blocked. In this study, a number of analyses including water quality analysis, digital borehole imaging, tunnel geological mapping and in-situ groundwater monitoring were performed to investigate the source of leaking, the leakage passages and the performance of the grouting curtains. An inverse modeling procedure combining the orthogonal design, finite element forward modeling of the transient seepage flow, artificial neural network and genetic algorithm was invoked to further evaluate the permeability of the foundation rocks whose permeability was underestimated in design, using the in-situ measurements of flow rate and piezometric head. The geological structures that lead to the leakage were identified and the seepage flow behaviors in the dam foundation and the left bank abutment were assessed. Given the connectivity nature of the sub-vertically oriented fractures that induce the leakage event, it is found that some of the drainage holes with relative larger amount of discharge could be closed or blocked for reducing the amount of leakage without remarkably increasing the pore water pressure in the foundation rocks.

The purposes of composition are various; one purpose, for instance, is to make a record for the writer's own use, as in a diary. That does not involve responsibility to others. There is also the writing meant to influence opinion-to be persuasive, and pleasing. With such writing we need not concern ourselves at this stage of our study. The prime purpose of technical writing is to be informative-to convey information; therefore it must" be clear beyond the chance of misunderstanding. Such clearness is impossible if meaningless or ill chosen, words are sprinkled through the text. Discard the trivial phrases that are constantly at your elbow. Brush aside a host of vapid superlatives. Metternich exclaimed:' "The superla¬tive is the mark of fools". It is a false emphasis, like the underlining in a school-girl's letter. For example, the little word `very' can be deleted nine times out of ten; it is an impediment to terse and perspicuous writing, as 'the multitudinous hand-baggage of the British tourist is to his travel. 'Very' supposes comparison. A mine with a 1000-ft. shaft is very deep to the scribe who writes from the Joplin district', in Missouri, but it seems a shallow hole to a man living at Calumet, Michigan. A vein that is 10 feet across may be considered very wide at Cripple Creek, Colorado, but it is only a `stringer' to the miner at the Homestake, in South Dakota. Ore assaying $20 in gold is very rich at Juneau, Alaska, where .10,000 tons of $1 ore is crushed daily, but it is relatively low-grade to the pocket-miner at Alleghany, in California. It is all a matter of comparison; unless the reader knows your standards of depth, width, or richness, your `very' has no significance. "Where erosion was very rapid or oxidation very shallow"

Is the Northern Territory different? Certainly it is more remote, has less people and relies more heavily on two or three industries for its survival. On the other hand, its mining industry is governed by Acts not dissimilar to those of the major States - a Mining Act provides the basis for acquisition of tenure, a Mine Management Act provides regulatory control, a Mineral Royally Act collects revenue in return for the right to utilise the land's bounties, an Environmental Assessment Act provides the public face to rehabilitation and environmental safety, and the Aboriginal Land Rights (NT) Act purports to give development criteria for inalienable land use. With the exception of the latter, at least until the advent of Mabo, all these are simply variations on a theme, and are common to most States. This paper will show how the Department of Mines and Energy works in relation to the Northern Territory mining industry.

"The original design of mine openings and pillars at White Pine was based upon traditional assumptions; i.e., that the principal load is due to the weight of overburden, and that horizontal stresses are equal to one-. third of the vertical.Beginning January, 1964, borehole deformation measurements confirmed suspicions that the principal stress is horizontal and several times greater than the vertical.Vertical stress appears to be directly related to depth, but lateral stresses vary considerably in direction and magnitude. The direction of major principal stress lies parallel to the bedding and is apparently parallel to tension joints. Lateral stresses appear to originate from an igneous intrusive.Mining induces stresses which add to the primitive stresses, in some areas precipitating failure. In this paper, rock failures are illustrated, methods of measurement and typical results are given, and measures to counter or utilize the lateral stresses are described."
