In June, 1981 the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) issued a report titled "Control Systems in Coal Preparation Plants" to determine the status of instrumentation and automation systems in the coal preparation industry. EPRI concluded that the control systems presently being employed in the U.S. coal preparation plants "are relatively primitive compared with those in other mineral processing industries; and analytical instrumentation is virtually non-existent". Until recently, clean coal has had a low selling price and satisfying the purchasers' specifications required only minimum cleaning. However, it is becoming more apparent that the increases in coalfired utility power plants forced outage rates are relative to the deterioration in the quality of fired coal. Utility companies are becoming aware of the economic value of reducing the variability of ash, moisture and sulfur in steam coal purchase orders. New contracts are currently being negotiated between electric utilities and coal producers that include provisions for increased penalties if the product does not meet specifications. With tighter specifications on the quality of steam coal, interest is increasing in more sophisticated control systems. One type of device that is currently assisting the preparation plant operator optimize and control the coal cleaning process is nuclear based instrumentation. Nuclear instrumentation includes methods for measuring weight, level, and density as well as for performing elemental analysis on coal. This paper discusses the various types and applications of nuclear instrumentation currently in use in the coal preparation industry.

"The high rate of failure of new mine developments to meet feasibility study expectations has been the subject of many fine technical papers. Yet failure rates remain stubbornly high.Similarly, the common occurrence of disastrous acquisitions resulting from failed due diligence on projects is well known. Yet such mistakes continue to be made.The authors argue that project and due diligence failure are caused at least partly by cognitive biases. These biases pervade decision-making throughout project evaluations.A wider understanding of these biases (and their effects) is necessary. Only then can mitigating actions be taken.The opportunity for this wider understanding exists. A number of best-selling books have been published on the topic in recent years. With wider understanding of key concepts and terms, cognitive biases can be recognised and discussed. They can also be challenged and mitigated.The authors believe that these concepts should be entry-level, required knowledge for anyone evaluating, developing, reviewing or financing mining projects.Perhaps the most prevalent biases in project evaluation failure are the ‘over-optimism’ biases. In particular, the planning fallacy and confirmation bias.The anchoring effect is also pervasive. This bias propagates unrealistic assumptions from scoping and prefeasibility studies through to so-called definitive feasibility studies. Unrecognised anchoring biases also undermine the validity of many ‘independent’ due diligence reviews. They are also prevalent in corporate acquisitions.The availability heuristic refers to a mental shortcut that can lead to a number of biases. One of these is the narrative fallacy. The mind constructs coherent narratives and opinions, regardless of the amount and quality of the information that support them. Narrative fallacy commonly occurs in the evaluation of social and political risk. Another is disaster neglect, which is especially common in the failure to assess risks associated with tailings management.This paper outlines the relevance of these biases to mine project evaluations. 1. Domestic Production and Use: In 1980, 13 companies operated 33 primary aluminum reduction plants, with 3 firms accounting for 62% of production. Washington, Oregon, and Montana accounted for 30% of the total production; Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas 19%; Tennessee, Alabama, and North Carolina 15%; other central and eastern States 36%. Based on published producer prices output of primary metal in 1980 was valued at over $7 billion. Aluminum consumption by 25,000 firms was centered in the East Central United States. Packaging accounted for an estimated 26% of domestic consumption in 1980, building 22%, transportation 21%, electrical 12%, consumer durables 7%, and other uses 12%.

Chemical and mineralogical characterization of Malaysian monazite, a phosphate mineral, bearing rare earth elements separated from the tin tailings originated from Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia, was performed in this paper. The study aims to collect detailed information on the chemical composition, crystal phases, and microstructure of the mineral monazite concentrate that would aid to optimize the subsequent hydrometallurgical processes for high-efficient separation of thorium and other associated rare earth elements. A systematic characterization study of the concentrate was conducted using techniques such as optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). These techniques analyzed the morphological details on the surface, elemental analysis, and mineral association assessment and identified the surface functionalization groups. The bulk composition and the mineral phases in which the elements are present were studied by wavelength-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (WD-XRF) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies respectively. The XRF analysis confirmed the presence of Ce, La, Nd, Pr, and Y (rare earth oxides: REO’s ~ 60 wt.%) while thorium dioxide (ThO2) accounted for 7 wt.% of the total composition. Traces of Ca, K, Al, Fe, Ti, and Mn were also confirmed by SEM elemental mapping. The XRD results confirmed that the concentrate was primarily composed of monazite (Ce, La, Nd, Th (PO4)) along with minor impurity phases of quartz. Automated mineralogical analysis was used as a confirmatory tool to corroborate the preliminary evidences. Based on the particle size distribution analysis supported by SEM, the majority of monazite grains were found to be present in the size range of 170–210 μm. Strong bands of PO4 and SiO4 were observed in the IR spectra corresponding to the phospho-silicate matrix of the REE mineral.

Construction of a major linear project in any environment is difficult, at best. Construction of a major linear project which includes major subway elements, both cut and cover and tunneling, in the center of an urban environment, approaches the impossible. I believe such a project would be impossible for a private company or a privately owned utility for a variety of reasons. The major two reasons are the funding necessary for such massive projects and the myriad of individual interests associated with private ownership of land. Such projects are possible in the public sector only because the need for the project... as is the case with mass transportation in Atlanta. . .overrides the profit motive. Without the profit motive, private companies, whether utilities or not, are precluded from practical interest in the development of any project. While it is safe to conclude that a profit-oriented business would have no practical interest in developing such massive projects as may include major tunnels, it would be useful, I think, to compare some of the significant differences between private profit-oriented businesses, and an agency, or Authority, such as MARTA, in building a major linear project. Every mineral project or mine is based on a geologic entity-an ore (mineral) deposit. A well-defined mineral deposit and its associated geologic characteristics are the only aspects of a project that cannot be altered. Mine plans can be modified to exploit the deposit using alternative approaches and yielding similar results. A variety of processing methods also are often available producing generally comparable results. Major modifications can be made to other aspects of the project without substantially changing project economics. However, all engineering and metallurgical aspects of a mine must be accommodated to the spe¬cific location and geologic characteristics of the deposit. Geologic data and interpretations form the foundation for both mine evaluation and mine production by providing esti¬mates of reserves and essential information for mine planning and process design or control. Proper geologic work requires a keen awareness of and an ability to anticipate the technical requirements of geotechnical engineers, hydrologists, mining engineers, metallurgists, and other specialists. Robotic subsea dredging crawlers are dynamically and remotely controlled vehicles that are used for deep sea mining and recovery operations. These exploration machines are released from a mother ship and move around on the ocean floor using tracks. Current ocean crawlers such as the MK3 ROST are hydraulically powered. In this paper we develop a scaled-down model for simulating and performing static loading analysis of an electrically powered robotic subsea dredging crawler (EPRSDC). The modeling, simulation, and analysis were carried out using modelling software from Solidworks. The structural frame was assembled using the Tetrix max robotics kit. The kit’s structural components were produced from 1050 aircraft-grade aluminum. The results were used in optimizing and for considering other materials, and the to identify specific areas to be reinforced in future crawler designs.

Methane emissions from the active face areas and from the fractured formations overlying the mined coalbed can affect safety and productivity in longwall mines. Since ventilation alone may not be sufficient to control the methane levels on a longwall operation, gob vent boreholes (GVB), horizontal and vertical drainage boreholes, and their combinations are drilled and used as supplementary methane control measures in many mines. However, in most cases, the types of degasification wellbores chosen are decided based on previous experiences without analyzing the different factors that may affect this decision. This study describes the development of an expert classification system used as a decision tool. It was built using a multilayer perceptron (MLP) type artificial neural network (ANN) structure. The ANN was trained using different geographical locations, longwall operation parameters, and coalbed characteristics as input and was tested to classify the output into four different selections, which are actual degasification designs that US longwall mines utilize. The ANN network selected no degasification, GVB, horizontal and GVB, and horizontal, vertical and GVB options with high accuracy. The results suggest that the model can be used as a decision tool for degasification system selection using site- and mine-specific conditions. Such a model can also be used as a screening tool to decide which degasification design should be investigated in detail with more complex numerical techniques.

The purpose of the panel's examination of coal mining research and development is to explore how the various groups that make up this research community might work together more efficiently and be more productive. The community, as defined here, includes federal and state governments, coal producers, manufacturers, unions, universities, and industry sponsored research organizations. The framework chosen for these discussions consists of brief presentations by the panel members on their views of the proper role and function of the group they represent. The panel members were also asked to highlight the economic, technical and institutional constraints that affect the performance of research and development and the use of the results. Following these presentations, a number of prepared questions will be discussed by the panel, and audience participation is invited. These questions were given several weeks ago to the panel members for their study. Before proceeding with the panel member reports, a brief review of the importance of R&D to the coal mining industry would be helpful to setting the stage for a constructive dialogue. It is appropriate to begin this review by mentioning that there is complete agreement among the research community that the major goals are: Improve health and safety Protect the environment Increase capital and labor productivity Increase resource recovery Since the basic functions of the academic, industrial and government sectors are different, we should expect that the research and development objectives and priorities, roles and responsibilities under each major goal will be different for each research group. The differences do not represent problem areas. However, problems will arise if the objectives are not properly interfaced at the appropriate time. The consequences of railing to understand the need for integrated programs will be the classic result, best described by the phrase --"a technical success but a commercial failure."

GENERAL GEOLOGY OF THE LAKE SUPERIOR IRON-BEARING AND COPPER-BEARING SERIES. THE geology of the Lake Superior region is of general interest, both from an economic and a scientific standpoint. The presence of large and rich iron- and copper-deposits has made a knowledge of the geology of the region necessary for purposes of exploitation and exploration. The ores of the region are contained in rocks of pre-Cambrian age, 'pith for most of the country up to recent years have usually been referred to as « crystalline schists " or " crystalline complex;" and regarded principally as metamorphosed basement-unit upon which the sedimentary rocks, beginning with the Paleozoic, were laid down. In the Lake Superior re¬gion this pre-Cambrian complex presents an unusual variety of rocks with determinable relations. It has been possible, with the large expenditures which-the magnitude of the iron-mining industry warrants, to work out their stratigraphy to a larger extent than has been possible in almost any other area of pre-Cambrian rocks. The real complexity of Lake Superior geology, the confusion of names and the multiplicity of reports covering small parts of the region, are such that interested persons, other than. geologists directly engaged in the work, may well hesitate to attempt to comprehend the geology of the region as a whole. The following paper is a somewhat elementary outline of the geology of the Lake Superior region with special reference to new developments not yet covered in published reports. Geological information concerning the region has been gath¬ered by mining companies, and by the geological surveys of Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Ontario, Canada, and the United States.. Perhaps in no other part of the country have the mining men themselves spent such large sums in purely geological work. This has made possible the publication of ,reports and maps by the State and Government surveys in much less time and at far less cost than would have been otherwise possible. The. U. S. The Cuyuna iron range in Crow Wing County, Minn., is the principal producer of manganiferous iron ore in the United States. The ore is mined from a manganiferous iron formation in the bedrock of the Cuyuna district. This iron formation is divided into two general lithologic types-thin-bedded and thick-bedded. The unoxidized, thin-bedded iron formation is composed of iron silicate with associated fine-grained carbonates of iron and manganese. The thick-bedded iron formation carries iron and manganese oxides with intimately associated silica. Oxidation and leaching of the original iron formation have been the most influential factors in producing manganiferous iron-ore concentrations in quantities large enough to exploit on a commercial basis. The unoxidized and the partly oxidized and enriched iron-formation materials are suitable as a source of ferrograde manganese ore. These materials have been classified according to their amenability to mineral dressing and degree of oxidation and leaching.

Artificial vision systems are increasingly used to assist humans to perform different tasks in different areas. These systems are able to recognize patterns in complex images, which can provide multiple data. Currently, vision systems are used in both; monitoring traffic - which uses radars for vehicular plate recognition- as in metallurgical and food industries for strict quality inspections. Their use in mining occurs in measuring the speed of froth over the lip of a cell, in determining the shape and size of pellets, in obtaining from the tendency of mineral content and as a replacement for laboratory analysis of particle size. With this advanced tool, it is possible to achieve significant improvements in quality, productivity, and especially in reducing costs in pelletizing plant of iron ore. The objective of this paper is to contemplate the current situation of image analysis in the pelleting plants and glimpse at the potential applications that are being developed. This paper also presents the conception and implementation of an automatic control system of the pellets size distribution applied on a pelletizing plant of iron ore. The article demonstrates the strategy used for measuring the size distribution of the iron ore pellets, based on image analysis and the strategy implemented on advanced process control, which shows substantial gain on plant performance.

A fast, reliable, and low cost characterization of ore minerals products, as they result from different processing actions, represents one of the most challenging targets in the mineral processing sector. Today different techniques are available according to different sampling strategies and analytical principles. In this paper, the possibilities offered by the adoption of hyperspectral imaging based sensing units working both at micro- and macro-scale are presented and discussed. According to the different phases and stages of ore minerals and products characterization, and starting from the analyses of the detected hyperspectral firms, it is thus possible to derive useful information about mineral flow stream properties and their physical-chemical attributes. This last aspect can be utilized to define innovative process mineralogy strategies and to implement on-line procedures at processing level. The present study discusses the effects related to the adoption of different hardware configurations, the utilization of different logics to perform the analysis and the selection of different algorithms according to the different characterization, inspection, and quality control actions to apply. Natural fibers are attracting the interest of engineering sectors owing to specific advantages such as lightweight and lower cost as well as for their inherent condition of being renewable, biodegradable, recyclable and environmental correct material with respect to CO2 emission. The banana fiber is nowadays recognized by its mechanical properties. It is known that with the increase of fibers volume fraction the composite significant increases its tensile strength. This was obtained with amounts up to 30% in volume of banana fiber. However no higher volume of fibers was able to be molded in a composite plate until now. Thus the present work aims to study higher volumes of fiber in terms of the influence on the tensile strength of specimens prepared under 5 tons of pressure. The fibers were previously washed and dried in an oven at 60ºC, after that poured together with the epoxy resin and catalyst mixture in the metal molds bone-shaped, and pressured to ensure specimens quality. The tensile strength increased significantly with higher amounts of banana fiber incorporated in the epoxy matrix. This better performance can be directly related to the fracture obstacle imposed by the fibers as well as the type of cracks resulting from the fiber/matrix interaction.

The analysis described herein evaluates the Bureau of Mines Program for Advancing Mining Technology - Oil Shale in terms of the economic benefits which may be derived for the Nation as a result of its successful research and development efforts. On the basis of postulated oil shale production scenarios, benefit-cost ratio indicators are computed for the program elements as they apply to surface, underground, and modified in situ oil shale mining systems. Eight value indicators are used to measure the Program's beneficial impact on the future oil shale industry in relation to planned research and development costs. These are: capital cost savings, operating cost savings, labor savings environmental quality maintenance cost reduction, reduction in production costs, byproduct production benefits, total production benefits, and additions to recoverable reserves. Program costs are aggregated from 1974 through 1987 and major benefits are accrued from 1982 through 2040. Both cost and benefit streams are discounted to mid-1975 present value.

Failures of tailings dams have been happening lately. Due to the lack of laws on particular design criteria and stability requirements related monitoring during construction and maintenance, they are thought to be more fragile than hydraulic dams. Monitoring the dam is therefore necessary to understand its current condition and guarantee its safety. The physical condition of the dam could be evaluated with the early identification of seepage. Additionally, due to their adaptability and capacity for high-resolution data collecting, UAVs are an excellent choice for efficiently covering the tailings dam site. UAVs may capture high-quality photos when equipped with a high-resolution RGB camera, thermal sensors, or multispectral sensors. When these sensors are paired with image processing and machine learning algorithms, the result is a reliable estimate of the dam condition.

The scaled-distance model for blast vibration analysis is the standard method employed throughout the surface mining and quarrying industries to model Peak Particle Velocity (PPV) data. Although empirical, the method is widely accepted and through the simplicity of its application and ease of graphical verification is set to remain a popular option. The validity of the technique relies principally on the fundamental parametric assumption that blasting data is normally distributed. Throughout the evolution of scaled-distance modelling, this is an issue that has most often been presumed rather than proven (most likely due to the tediousness of the calculations involved). In the few cases when normality has been given some degree of consideration, the result has been the product of a simple visual inspection of frequency distributions: clearly unsatisfactory. However recently the soundness of this assumption has been brought into question, with obvious connotations for blast modelling in general. This paper considers this fundamental issue and seeks to investigate the normality hypothesis within the blasting context through an in-depth statistical analysis of what possibly can be described as an ‘ideal’ blasting dataset. This being a rare case study concerning an opencast coal site in England, where for the entire life of the site every single blast was monitored and recorded through the use of permanent monitoring stations. This has provided a unique ‘total population’ dataset of considerable size from which the assumptions of normality are put to the test.

Measurement while drilling (MWD) is a subsurface exploration technique associated with real-time and continuous monitoring and recording of drilling data during the drilling process. This technique can be used for underground investigations to differentiate ground strata, detect the presence of fractures and voids, and evaluate geological features and mechanical properties of geomaterial. When MWD is used for geotechnical investigations, it can improve site characterization, identify variable conditions, improve design and construction, lead to shorter project delivery times, reduce the cost and risks associated with limited subsurface data and geotechnical uncertainties, and maximum return-on-investment. Given these benefits, MWD is gaining attention among transportation agencies and the geotechnical industry. Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA’s) innovation deployment program “Every Day Counts (EDC-5)” includes the implementation of Advanced Geotechnical Methods in Exploration (A-GaME), which aims to implement effective, underutilized subsurface exploration methods, including MWD, in U.S. practice. This paper provides an overview of the MWD technology for geotechnical site investigations and presents a case history where MWD was employed to design deep foundation for the construction of a building in Massachusetts. The advantages of this technology for risk reduction and project cost and time saving are also discussed.
