"Qatar’s capital Doha is undergoing major infrastructure improvements including a multiphase stormwater management program. Although located in an arid climate, Doha experiences flooding during rainfall events. Dewatering operations and rising groundwater levels add to the management needs. To address those needs, construction of the Musaimeer collection tunnel along Doha’s southern rim is being followed by a marine outfall tunnel connecting a pump station to a dispersion field 10 km offshore. Qatar’s geology is characterized by sabkha deposits, a series of predominantly weak and karstic rock strata that creates challenging conditions for mechanized tunneling, as highlighted by the uncontrolled flooding of a tunnel boring machine (TBM) used on the Doha Metro tunnels. Risk associated with these challenges is magnified for the outfall tunnel by drive length, sub-sea elevation, and a single access point. This paper describes the outfall exploration strategy and design decisions made in light of experience gained during the collection tunnel construction. CONTEXT – STORMWATER MANAGEMENT PROGRAM Qatar has an arid climate with an average annual precipitation of less than 100 mm. Precipitation is mostly confined to the winter months when rare, but occasionally heavy rainfall events easily lead to flooding in Doha’s metropolitan area. Its coastal location and flat topography a few meters above the sea level mean that the depth to the groundwater table is generally shallow. The karstic aquifers in the regional dolomite and limestone series contain groundwater of high salinity, which is not suitable as a potable water source. For supplying Doha’s population of more than 900,000 (2014) with potable water, the Ras Abu Fontas seawater desalination plant is operated about 10 km south of the city. This potable water production capacity is crucial for Doha’s development and – in conjunction with overirrigation and leaking sewage tanks – is also the root cause for rising groundwater tables that have been observed over the past years."

The advance of science and technology influences the modern economy in countless ways. Older industries must adapt to changes in the marketplace, while new industries are born by applying new technology to meet consumer needs. In light of declining head grades and increased unit costs in the US minerals industry, new technological developments in the production environment are paramount to maintaining a competitive footing in the international marketplace. Micro-engineering research provides the transition between the knowledge base and the application of new technology on the production level. Economic considerations The primary goal of technical development in the production environment is to reduce unit operating costs. Simply stated, this is accomplished by improving operating efficiencies and productivities on the production level. The goal of micro-engineering research in the production environment is to evaluate promising technologies and develop the criteria necessary to apply them in operations. As such, this process is the first step toward innovation and discovery. Generally, the micro-engineering research is followed by macro-engineering development. In the production environment, there are generally more development projects than can be accomplished in a timely manner. Usually, this is the result of financial and human resource limitations. Consequently, it is necessary to prioritize the work such that the most beneficial projects are accomplished first. By performing a discounted cash flow analysis and using benefit-cost ratios (for non-mutually exclusive alter¬natives) or net present value criteria (for mutually exclusive alternatives), the projects can be rated from best to worst. In this way, the financial and human resources can be best allocated to first complete those projects giving the highest returns before moving on to other activities. Moreover, this information is a prerequisite for management to justify additional financial or human resources.

"The ceramic industry of the United States has a total yearly manufactured product of nearly half a billion dollars, despite large foreign importation.After careful investigation of the industry by the Bureau of Mines, it is the belief of those in charge that the usefulness of the industry can be greatly enlarged and the importations greatly lessened through the development of processes that will lead to a greater and better development of the ceramic resources of the United States. This will result in a greater industry with more men employed than ever before, and perhaps a world's supremacy in ceramic trade matters.Investigations in behalf of the ceramic industry are being made at the Bureau of Mines experiment ceramic station at Columbus, Ohio, under the supervision of R. T. Stall, superintendent, who reports a number of instances of practical, beneficial cooperation between the industry and the station during the last fiscal year.Graphite to Crucibles:Prior to 1914, practically all graphite crucibles manufactured in the United States were made from Ceylon graphite bonded with German Klingenberg clay. It was the general belief among graphite crucible manufacturers and users that good crucibles could not be made from American bond clays and graphites.Graphite crucibles were essential for melting certain alloys and special steels urgently needed for the manufacture of war materials. The demand for such metals was so great that it created an unprecedented demand for graphite crucibles.After the European war began no Klingenberg clay could be shipped out of Germany. However, it was fortunate for the cyucibly makers that they had large stocks of Klingenberg clay on hand. When the stock of Klingenberg clay became exhausted, it was necessary for the credible makers to turn their attention to American clays. There were no data or other information available to guide the crucible makers in the selection of good bond clays for their crucibles. It was necessary for them to select their clays more or less by ""guess"", which resulted in the period of service or life of graphite crucibles being shortened 15 to as much as 60 per cent."

The majority of the tailings dam operations in South Africa will be required to comply with the new Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM) within the next one to three years, depending on the dam classification and the requirements of the respective investors and insurers. With up to 72 auditable requirements, the implementation of the Standard needs careful planning and prioritization. This paper focuses on the practical steps to GISTM compliance for tailings facilities in operation in South Africa. The discussions are based on current practices, South African regulations, and industry standards requirements. The possible changes in dam classifications and the associated requirements are presented.

Intensive resource extraction, in the form of multiple mining operations, presents significant assessment and management challenges for resource developers, governments, community and the environment. Cumulative impacts, ie the successive, incremental and combined impacts (both positive and negative) of an activity on society, the economy and the environment, can place significant pressure on social, economic and environmental capital and render conventional mine-by-mine approaches to management ineffective. Cumulative impacts can be what are most important to environments, communities and economies surrounded by multiple mining operations because cumulative impacts are what they experience. There is much to gain from increased consideration of cumulative impacts. Unmitigated impacts have the potential to delay or even prevent expansion of mining in existing and prospective areas. On the other hand proactive management of cumulative impacts can benefit regional environments and communities and contribute to the industryÆs social license to operate. Resources are often not the limiting factor to better cumulative impact management. More effective coordination of existing resources may go a long way toward mitigation and enhancement, and better planning and assessment may help avoid impacts and exploit opportunities for efficiency gains through reduced duplication. In this paper we draw from working examples to present five practical assessment and management strategies applicable to resource companies to enhance positive, and avoid and mitigate negative, cumulative impacts. The strategies are presented based on their capacity for achieving outcomes, ease of implementation and cost effectiveness and are drawn from a multi-year study on the assessment and management of cumulative impacts in the Hunter Valley, New South Wales and a follow-up study to improve cumulative impact assessment and management practice in the Australian coal mining industry, both reported elsewhere.

Open pit blasting can be a low cost routine or a high cost bottleneck depending on geology, environment and the operator's ability to master site conditions. Because blasting is a repetitive operation, there should be ample opportunity to optimize the process; but ordinarily this optimization is rarely achieved and then only if conditions remain consistent and predictable. Often, however, and particularly with porphyry coppers, hidden differences in rock characteristics nullify the operator's best efforts. At a porphyry copper deposit being mined by Kennecott Copper Corporation, there are all of the following rock types: oxidized and fresh porphyry, altered and silicified limestone, explosion breccia, rhyolite, sandstone, shale and several others. The units can cover large areas or be limited to a few tens of feet in maximum dimension. They are rarely visible on the bench surface and often do not show up in the bench slope. Even though the blastability of these rocks varies substantially, a generally-uniform blasting pattern was formerly used with disappointing results. Secondary blasting was often required and high bottoms occurred frequently; overblasting wasted drilling time, and explosives caused excessive throw. Several possible methods for improving the blast design were considered and a geophysical method was chosen for testing. There had been reports in the journals that seismic methods were being used in Europe as aids for blasting design. A literature search turned up work by Haxby 1/ on use of a refraction seismograph for measuring pit bench rock strength. Using his work as a springboard, equipment was purchased and a program was planned and carried out for developing, evaluating and implementing the seismic method for routine mine use. The Bureau of Mines through its contract research program recently analyzed the mining and environmental requirements in the premining stage for copper mining in the northern highland of Wisconsin. The Critical-Path-Method (CPM) was used in this research. However, a step-by-step derivation of the CPM Diagram was beyond the scope of this effort. The Bureau of Mines objective now is to show, step by step, how the original hand-computed CPM Diagram was constructed. The streamlining (restructuring) of this diagram from the original effort is also summarized. The critical path time (longest time) through the original CPM Diagram was 25.12 yr, excluding public liaison effort. This diagram showed the involvement of the regulatory agency, mining applicant and public in the premining stage. Analysis of this diagram produced a streamlined version which reduced the critical path time by nearly 7 yr. The CPM construction methodology offered here may be applied to mine planning for any mining operation.

Utilizing automation is one way to improve competitiveness. Roof and rib bolting in underground coal mines has not changed significantly for more than 40 years. Most roof bolting is still a largely manual process involving high levels of staff carrying out repetitive work. Roof bolting statistically has one of the highest levels of underground accidents, including finger, hand, and arm injuries. Operators are exposed to falling objects and becoming entangled in roof bolting apparatus while roughly moving awkward 6-ft drill steels and roof bolts. It is estimated that over 25 million roof bolts are installed annually in the U.S. underground coal market with well over 1,500 operators involved in roof bolting on a day-to-day basis. Recently electrohydraulic roof bolting rigs have been installed to offer partial automation of the drilling cycle and the bolting cycle. The next stage is to provide a storage and loading system to allow full automation of fullcolumn resin roof bolts. This paper reviews the latest electrohydraulic roof bolting equipment and discusses the testing of a fully automated drill rig. Full electronic control allows each step of the roof bolting process to be recorded, providing a digital record of each installation, including hole depth, spin time, gel time, torque, and cycle time. Other benefits include monitoring of water pressure and flow, used to prevent blocked drill steels as well as digital fault finding. A fully automated roof bolting machine greatly improves operator safety and gives high-quality repeatable roof bolting with reduced cycle times.

Field evidence for current hypothe e about age and kinematic ignificance of gold-bearing hear zones in the Archean Yellowkni fe greenstone belt is reviewed , and it is concluded that major disagreements between previous workers are a direct result of differences in stratigraphic and tructural in terpretations of the Yellowknife Supergroup. Although goldbearing hear zone appear to be confined to the mafic volcanic pile of the Kam Group. it can be shown that shearing affected all supracru tal rocks, including the Jackson Lake Formation. now con idered to represent the youngest unit of the Yellowknife Supergroup. tructural ob ervations are incompatible with the hypothe is that the hear zones represent loci of ynvolcanic gravity sliding but are consistent with earlier conclu ions that shear zone development commenced with rotation of the volcanic pile and continued as re ult of lateral shortening broadly overlapping with the emplacement of granitoid batholiths. Shear Zones are common throughout the entire green tone belt. yet productive zone are confined to the Yellowknife Bay Formation of the Kam Group and localized where flow abut with a high angle again t the contact of the We tern Plutonic complex. However. no obvious tructural and lithological features have been recognized that are more favorable for gold deposition and distinguish the shear zones and flows of the area around the mines from those of other parts of the greenstone belt. The model that gold wa transported by metamorphic solutions and that hear zones were the firs t-order control for gold deposition provides no explanation for the trong localization of the depo it . As porphyries with elevated gold contents are present in and near ome of the mines. the possibility that gold was deposited from hydrothermal system around fel ic intrusion representing early phases of the Western Plutonic complex should be given erious consideration.

Geometallurgical characterisation of ore deposits is accepted practice in some parts of the mining industry today. Its primary aim is to provide constrained inputs that reflect inherent geological variability and its impact on metallurgical performance for the deposit. Geometallurgy improves project value because it suggests more valuable alternatives for scheduling and processing through an increased knowledge and understanding of the interactions of rock properties and extractive technologies. Lower project cost (both capital and processing) and improved recoveries are the result from closer tailoring of the mining and mineral processing strategies to the characteristics of the resource (Dunham, Vann and Coward, 2011). Tailings storage facilities (TSFs) can be seen as potential resources and it is argued that fundamental geometallurgical characterisation as applied in ore deposit characterisation should also be applied to planning the retreatment of TSFs. This paper will describe a research project at Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Resource Centre assessing if geometallurgical principles and methodologies can successfully be applied to TSFs as they have been to primary deposits. The project is establishing a new standard method of tailings evaluation which will include a 3D spatial model of the tailings resource. Initial domaining of the TSFs was done using principal component analysis followed by k-means cluster analysis based on chemical assays from drill core samples. The subsequent characterisation of the drill core samples has involved chemical, mineralogical and metallurgical profiling, with a range of metallurgical tests being conducted on the samples. This characterisation step is followed by class-based analysis, predictive modelling and process performance domaining with the ultimate objective of establishing a 3D spatial model incorporating geochemical, mineralogical and metallurgical performance data. This approach, which takes into account processing performance permits a more realistic (as compared to doing limited chemical assays and metallurgical testing) economic evaluation of the potential of reprocessing the tailings material. It is believed that the approach is generic and can be applied to other TSFs being considered for reprocessing. The business objectives of a metallurgical project determine targets and constraints, such as the range of products, production capacities, in-service dates, and capital and operating cost parameters. Permitting is usually left to the project team, as are decisions regarding site location, technology, and construction approach. Success requires an orderly methodology, represented in this book by front end loading (FEL) phases: FEL1 examines several alternative approaches; FEL2 ranks and eliminates less economically or technically attractive options; and FEL3 develops the preferred option to the point of major permit completion, with defined scope, schedule, and cost to submit for approval to proceed with implementation in FEL4. Working through FEL1, FEL2, and FEL3, the project definition improves, estimates become more accurate, and project risks are reduced. The project design basis at the end of FEL3 is the control document for project implementation in FEL4.

THROUGHOUT this article, minerals used in the paint industry are designated 'pigments'. They may be classified in two groups: (1) Pigments which are used in the state in which they occur in nature, requiring only mechanical preparation. (2) Pigments which require heating or chemical treatment before use, in order to obtain from them a product of the desired quality or shade of colour. They may be further classified according to colour, as follows: White Pigments .-These include calcium carbonate (chalk, marble), gypsum and alabaster, kaolin-or china-clay, and magnesia. However, the white pigments most extensively used are compounds prepared chemically from minerals containing lead, zinc, titanium, and antimony. The white pigments are of particular importance because, not only are they used by themselves, but they also serve as adjuncts to other colours for the production of special shades. Yellow Pigments.-These are mainly naturally occurring ferric hydroxides, as limonite and bog iron ore, or similar. compounds prepared artificially. Brown Pigments .-Pigments of this group are distinguished for their beauty and depth of colour, and many of them are used in the finest of paintings. Familiar names are sienna, umber, and Vandyke brown. They are for the most part ferric hydroxides, containing varying amounts of water; but the group also includes a manganese brown, which consists chiefly of a mixture of oxide and hydroxide of manganese. Red Pigments.-Chief among this group is ferric oxide, known under various trade-names, such as Canadian red, Persian red, etc., and also the much prized and somewhat rare vermilion. The pigment used is either naturally occurring hematite, de-hydrated limonite, or artificially produced red ferric oxide.

Coal supply analysis has since about 1973 become a major activity of many scholars and consulting firms. The present paper is an effort to explain in as nontechnical fashion as possible the state of the art and what implications, if any, the research has for those actually engaged in producing coal or regulating the industry. l The discussion stresses the coal supply side of the models and makes limited comments about other elements in the analysis. To orient the appraisal, it is desirable to recall the features of coal supply that an adequate model should capture. The first considerations are the locational aspects of the industry. Transportation costs can, in some cases, exceed the production costs of coal, and thus any adequate model must incorporate a treatment of the economics of transporting coal from one location to another. A second major issue is that of the heterogeneity of coal; models should treat as well as possible such key differences among coals as their Btu and sulfur content. Third, we recognize that, with given technology and labor, capital, and supply costs, an expansion of the supply of a given type of coal in a specific region will occur only if prices rise. This is the familiar proposition of textbook economics that supply is an increasing function of price. Finally, over time, changes in technology, input cost, and depletion interact to cause changes in the price of given amounts of coal. Economics represents the net effect of this process by a shift over time in the supply curve. During the 1950s and 1960s, the trend was to reduce the production costs of a given output; subsequently costs rose sharply.

The Wonawinta silver project near Cobar in NSW is under development by Cobar Consolidated Resources Limited (CCR). RMDSTEM Limited is part of the owner’s team for feasibility, design, engineering, construction and commissioning.With a 51Moz resource CCR is one of the largest pure silver players in Australia. A probable reserve of 14.3Moz has been defined for a mine life of approximately five years. The silver mineralization is contained in host rock composed of clays and oxidized limestone. The ore also contains on average 1.3% lead as cerussite, and other minerals. A simple circuit consisting of slurrying of the ore, gravity treatment of the coarse fraction to recover lead, silver extraction using CIL, elution and the Merrill Crowe silver recovery process, has been developed.The “value engineering” approach to this development pioneered over the past decade by RMDSTEM has meant that RMDSTEM has delivered the bankable feasibility study at a cost of $0.07 per resource ounce. It is highly cost effective making efficient use of shareholders funds as well as being very time efficient. This paper describes the application of the value engineering approach to the development of the Wonawinta project.

Graphite occurs in many places in the United States, but previous to 1914 the domestic production amounted to only 15 to 20 per cent of the natural graphite consumed in this country. Including artificial, graphite, the proportion was about 25 per cent. During the World War the production of both natural and artificial graphite increased until, in 1918 it, contributed more than one-half of the available supply, and since 1919 the proportion has not fallen below 40 per cent. Except during the war period, however, this apparently increasing independence has not been due to any large increase in production from domestic mines. It simply reflects a larger output of artificial graphite and reduced imports of Ceylon lung and chip, grades which have never been produced in substantial quantity in the United States. DOMESTIC DEPOSITS3 American graphite deposits, though numerous and often large, are characteristically low-grade. They constitute an abundant source of potential supply, but in normal times they have proved relatively costly to work, and even at the same price the various products have never been able wholly to displace certain imported qualities, notably crucible grades from Ceylon and pencil graphite from Mexico.

SINCE the World War, excepting for a few brief periods of relief, the American petroleum industry has been obliged to meet its important economic responsibility to this nation hampered by the maladjustment that inevitably follows a marked and unwholesome over-production of its raw material, crude oil. Despite the warnings of the Federal Oil Conservation Board and the endeavors of many of the leaders in the business to stem the flow of oil from the wells of the country, the evil ,not only persists but, at the moment, seems more malignant than ever before. Unless the local and temporary restraints on drilling and production now in effect in California, Wyoming, Texas, and Oklahoma are continued, and, indeed, unless stricter and more comprehensive measures of the same sort are imposed and adhered to by the industry in those States, over-production in the enterprise during the current year will be more pronounced than in any other period in history.

Portals to access underground mines are important infrastructure and their design requires careful consideration. Portals are generally expected to last for the life of the mine. Typically, the exposure of personnel and equipment is high, with many hundreds of movements through the portal per day. Consequently, the risk associated with geotechnical instability must be extremely low. Portals are often established from a boxcut. In areas where the weathering profile is well developed, the design and execution of the boxcut can involve significant effort, with the objective of minimizing the volume of the boxcut, whilst ensuring that conditions at the design depth are suitable for establishing a stable portal. Properly designed site investigations are a critical part of this process. Currently available portal design guidelines have not been updated for decades, however the equipment and ground support systems have changed significantly in recent years. Many mine portals have since been constructed in a relatively short time frame with success, often in challenging ground conditions using some of the more modern approaches to ground support. This is beneficial because delays in establishing a portal will generally delay other critical path activities, and lead to cost overruns.

This Bureau of Mines report describes 147 known fluorspar deposits in New Mexico and briefly mentions 54 miscellaneous occurrences for which little or no information was obtained. Most miscellaneous occurrences are minor and too poorly exposed to be considered more than prospects. History and production of fluorspar in New Mexico, type of deposition, mineralogy, uses, and grade specifications are discussed. Total mine production of fluorspar in New Mexico is nearly 641,000 tons of various grades of crude ore and hand-sorted material. Fluorspar deposits occur in 13 of the state's 32 counties. Grant, Valencia, and Luna Counties account for 86.4 percent of the total production. During the investigation, 141 deposits were visited. A total of 72 character samples was collected for assay, and 3 larger samples were collected for bench-scale metallurgical tests. Results of these metallurgical tests indicate that an acid-grade product can be obtained with 95 percent recovery of the CaF2 content of the crude ore.

MINING Metallurgy, and Petroleum Engineering department in our colleges are facing a crisis; indeed, conditions that threaten their very existence. Unless the Army, Navy, and War Manpower Commission change their present policy, within two years mineral industries education as now carried on will die, because no ablebodied students will be left in the course. If this is the decision of our responsible governmental agencies we of the mining schools must perhaps accept it as a war measure. It might be well however, for the executive of our mining metallurgical, and oil companies to look ahead a, to where they are to recruit a supply of young technically trained engineers. You can no more operate a mine, a steel plant or an oil company without trained engineers than you can operate a battleship without mechanical and electrical engineers.
