"Converting carbon dioxide and water to hydrocarbons is an attractive option for storing solar energy and, coupled with appropriate CO2 capture technology, for recycling carbon and impacting atmospheric CO2 concentrations. For any process, high solar-to-fuel efficiency is necessary for large scale viability and favorable economics. Thermochemical approaches for solar-to-fuel conversion are potentially highly efficient as they avoid the inherent limitations of photosynthesis and also sidestep the solar-to-electric conversion necessary to drive electrolytic reactions. Solar-driven two-step metal-oxide-based thermochemical cycles for producing the components of syngas, CO and H2, from CO2 and H2O are the basis of the “Sunshine to Petrol” project. Multi-cycle production of both H2 and CO has been demonstrated over several iron- and cerium-based compositions fabricated into monolithic pieces both in the laboratory and at the National Solar Thermal Test Facility. These compositions are being developed for deployment in a unique and continuous solar-driven reactor prototype, the counter-rotating-ring receiver reactor recuperator or CR5.IntroductionThe interconnected challenges posed by increasing global competition for petroleum and the increasing concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide are now widely recognized. Meeting these challenges requires recognition that although hydrocarbon fuels are ideal energy carriers, they can no longer be thought of as primary energy sources. It is necessary to take the realistic view that our conventional fossil fuels are in fact “stored sunlight” in the form of “sequestered carbon.” This view leads to a search for options to use and store sunlight more directly.Sunshine to PetrolIn combusting hydrocarbons we unlock the energy for utilization, but we also release the carbon to the atmosphere. The Tom's Gully gold mine is located 90km ESE from Darwin, in the Northern Territory of Australia. The orebody is the auriferous portion of a large sulphide rich quartz reef, hosted in the Wildman Siltstone Formation of the Early Proterozoic Pine Creek Inlier, at the NH extremity of the Mount Bundey granite-syenite intrusion. It was discovered by Carpentaria Exploration Company Pty Ltd on November 17th, 1986, using stream sediment geochemistry.The reef is 800m long at surface, strikes E-H and dips approximately 300 to the south, becoming progressively less steep. Only the eastern half of the reef is auriferous, with gold grades averaging 9 g/t plus anomalous silver, base metals and arsenic.The enclosing siltstone is a dark grey banded carbonaceous and pyritic metapelite, showing areenschist regional metamorphism and thermal effects from the adjacent pluton. Local folding plunging gently SW is cut by a south dipping fault, probably a thrust, in which the reef was later formed at about the time of the granitic intrusion. Ground-water and tailings pond monitoring in the Upper Santa Cruz Basin Mines Task Force's Special Studies Area has been performed to determine the nature and extent of aquifer contamination from copper tailings pond's recharge in the basin. A monitoring program for each of three mining areas (Mines A, B, and D) was developed. Analysis of data shows that recharge from Mine A's ponds has caused increased hardness, sulfate and total dissolved solids in local ground water. However, pumpage in the area has controlled most of the water's movement. Pond recharge from Mine B has led to similar conditions, and the degraded water is moving towards a local public-supply well. Pumpage from Mine D's interceptor wells is controlling some, but not all, of the movement of recharge seepage from Mine D's ponds. Recommendations include the need for enhanced monitoring programs at each current mine site, development of a monitoring program for Mine C's area, development of water budgets for all mines, investigation of tailings pond compaction and sliming, establishment of mine closure plans for containment of recharged pond water, and the need for additional interceptor wells in several locations.

This paper describes the mineral deposits and discusses mining and milling methods and related operating conditions in an important gold , silver , lead , and zinc producing area in Ouray , San Juan , and San Miguel Counties , Colo . , embracing 250 square miles . The area is extremely rigged , ranging in altitude from 8,000 to 14,000 feet . White men first penetrated the area in 1860 , when a group known as "Baker's party " reached the Animas River at the present site of Silverton . Difficulty with the Ute Indians and severe winter conditions forced the group to leave and discouraged prospecting until 1870 when a second party reached the area and succeeded in producing 27 tons of ore yielding $ 150 a ton in gold . In 1874 , a treaty with the Indians opened the way for settlement , and mining was established . The total production of recovered gold , silver , copper , lead , and zinc from 1873 to 1947 in the three counties is valued at $347,057,047 . The greatest amount of the total production of metals has come from quartz veins in a series of volcanic flows and tuffs covering the area and comprising a blanket 4,000 to 6,000 feet thick . The igneous rocks were laid down upon an old , erosion surface and are underlain by Paleozoic and Mesozoic sedimentary rocks and pre - Cambrian metamorphic rocks . The entire series has been intruded in late Tertiary time by volcanic dikes and larger intrusive masses . Because of the great differences in relief generally , mining is con-" ducted through long adits to a depth of nearly 3,000 feet below surface in places . Walls of the veins generally stand well , and shrinkage stoping is the most common method of mining . As virtually all of the ore is sulfide below the zone of oxidation , flotation is the common method of milling . Generally , where gold is important , provision is made for its removal by jigs . Bulk concentration of the sulfides is practiced at smaller mills , but the larger operations make a selective lead and zinc concentrate or a lead , zinc , and copper . concentrate . ·

Turquoise is prized solely for its attractive color ; it is dull and opaque , wholly lacking the brilliant luster that is the chief attraction of transparent gems . The best quality of turquoise is blue , of a soft and pleasing tone , like the color of clear sky but distinctive , as indicated by use of the term " turquoise blue . " Often its value is lessened by a greenish cast ; in many stones the green predominates . A large proportion of the turquoise that is mined is utterly worthless , so inferior and unattractive is its color . The finest grade of turquoise comes from Persia , notable from Nishapur . Large quantities have been mined in the Southwestern States of the United States , and less important deposits have been found in a number of the other States .

In response to these challenges, the Professional Mine Water Action Plan (PMAP) introduces a revolutionary approach that combines cutting-edge AI technology and environmentally friendly reagents for in situ neutralisation of acidic wastewater. PMAP leverages magnesium-based slowrelease reagents and AI-driven intelligent dispensing systems to optimise treatment processes within the tailing pond itself. The unmanned smart dispensing vessel (USDV) conducts bathymetry to gather data on water quality and hydrography, allowing the system to determine the appropriate reagent quantity and injection strategy. This approach transforms the tailing pond into virtual reaction columns, enabling individual and simultaneous water treatment while optimising efficiency. Simulation can play an important role in the design, optimization and control of complete industrial processes, the most appropriate method depending on the particular application. Most commonly, process models or simulators are means of representing the process which are either purely mathematical or physical. Mathematical models, however, almost invariably need to be based to some extent on experimental data or require experimental verification before they can be used with confidence. Ways in which experimental and mathematical modelling techniques can be combined to best effect are discussed, with reference to the simulation of iron ore induration and direct reduction processes. A novel method is presented for the simulation of direct reduction shaft furnaces. Small scale apparatus has been developed in which ore or pellet samples are subjected to the changing environment of the industrial process. The time dependent conditions (solid temperature and gas compositions) are provided by a mathematical representation of heat transfer and the conservation of mass and energy in the process Simulated.

Stockpiles have always been a necessary part of coal mining except, perhaps, when a person was mining only for the needs of his family from a seam on his home place or coal mined for the use of a small hamlet and carried to each man's house as it was mined. Then it may have been stockpiled at each man's place for several days or on the village common. Mining with this limited production required waste stockpiling. Stockpiling of the products of coal mining, both coal and waste material, has always been a necessity. Very little coal has ever been moved directly or immediately from the working face to the point of consumption and burned. It has always been expedient to stockpile the coal some- where and store the waste.

Environmental, social and governance issues (ESG) have become a defining feature in the marketplace to differentiate preferred investments. With the sustainability commitment and reporting landscape anticipated to evolve exponentially, it is now imperative to rapidly develop the approach taken by mineral companies to adequately identify and address ESG risks and opportunities in the reporting of Mineral Resource and Mineral Reserve (MRMR). MRMR cannot be effectively reported as technically and financially assured and realistically executable, if ESG is not integrated into the strategy, business model, input assumptions and process that defines and drives robust MRMR public reporting. Regulatory reporting codes across the globe are presently in various stages of being updated and modified to ensure ESG factors are appropriately covered as a key part of diligent and transparent disclosure. Security exchanges are making it clear that companies must not omit ESG risks from reports to investors. This paper discusses associated challenges for MRMR reporting and suggests avenues for improvement. Key themes include: the importance of procedure rather than prescription and checklists; how ESG criteria impact Modifying Factors and determination of Reasonable Prospects for Economic Extraction (RPEE); the need for financial models to account for material ESG commitments; the uniqueness of each mineral asset; the need for education, upskilling and accreditation of both ESG experts about MRMR reporting and equally Competent Persons in ESG matters; and the need for clear and balanced reports that meet the needs of end users. (RPEE is adopted here for simplicity and consistency, recognising that some reporting codes still include ‘Eventual’ in the term (ie RPEEE). Whilst RPEE and RPEEE are subtly different the intent is to point to the process of assessing ESG factors in determining reasonable prospects.) The principles of transparency, materiality and competence remain paramount when considering the impact of ESG matters on MRMR reporting, and this necessitates an inclusive, cohesive, and integrated approach to assessing ESG issues to ensure the necessary expertise and diligence is applied.

"Mineral endowment in northern British Columbia and the Yukon Territory was assessed on the basis of geological opinion which was gathered in a quantitative framework of subjective probabilities. The survey area encompassed 364,000 square miles and was divided into 310 cells having dimensions of one degree of longitude by one-half degree of latitude. The response solicited related to tonnage, grade and number of deposits of a particular mineral in each cell. The questionnaire sought an expression of mineral endowment down to mine-able depth as distinct from economic expectations. Details on the questionnaire and responses are presented in a series of contour maps on individual commooities, which illustrate the collective occurrence picture of the respondents. The approach is largely dependent on the cooperation of an adequate number of geologists familiar with the region being examined. This approach to an assessment of the mineral endowment of a region has a wide range of applicability, from the focusing of exploration effort to aiding government and development bodies in the formulation of regional strategies and the planning, for example, of road, rail and power facilities."

Coal has been mined by hydraulic means in various countries, i.e., the hydraulic excavation as well as the hydraulic transportation of coal has been practiced. The hydraulic breaking (excavating) of the coal dealt with in this report is done with a monitor directing a continuous jet of water against the coal, pressures of the water fed to the monitor range from 1500 to 2500 psi at 1000 to 2100 gallons per minute Transportation of the coal from the face is by fluming if a gradient exists in excess of 2 or, when a favorable gradient does not exist, the coal is pumped from the face by various types of pumps which can also provide a means of hoisting the coal to a higher elevation as required. This report presents: 1.) preliminary design and systems specifications of a demonstration miner (referred to in this report as a hydrominer), 2.) mining configurations showing good promise for typical U.S. thick coal seams in three seam pitch categories, (0° - 7° = Flat, 8° - 250 = Moderately pitching, 26° - 90° = Steeply pitching), along with cost and performance analyses for each system, 3.) a definition of a test program that will provide sufficient engineering data for the design of a water jet cutting head adequate to cut coal in those typical U.S. thick coal seams The cost analysis data showed hydraulic methods to be economically competitive with present thick seam raining methods. It was also obvious from studies of thick seam methods that the hydromonitor coal breaking techniques are more effective in removing most of the coal with its long reach of 60 ft. (or more), is a safer mining system, and produces very low coal-dust content in the air (usually less than 0.25 to 0.5 mg/cubic meter). It is recommended that the USBM sponsor a full fledged continuation of the hydraulic mining program: (a) lab, test, (b) preliminary field test, (c) full scale mine section demonstration.

"Ferrous and non-ferrous metals industries are source of both direct and indirect greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Metal industry accounted for 29.7% of the total GHG emitted from the Indian industry sector in 2007. Aluminum is second largest contributor after steel. Indian Aluminum industry has been growing and is adopting several effective measures for better efficiencies through process change and waste utilization. Improvement in the energy efficiency can form the basis of monitoring reduction in emissions. Under the National Action Plan on Climate Change 2008, National Mission for Enhanced Energy Efficiency (NMEEE) aims to upscale the efforts to unlock the market for energy efficiency improvement on a public private partnership (PPP) basis. For a transition to low carbon economy industry is undertaking voluntary measures through scientific and technological innovations both in upstream and downstream sectors. In this paper an attempt is made to overview recent developments in Indian Aluminum industry as well as summarize scientific & technological challenges and prospects.IntroductionAluminum plays a vital role in industrial development. It is a substitute for different type of materials ranging from wood to copper and steel. The aluminum industry has high energy consumption and high contribution to greenhouse gases from carbon dioxide and perfluorocarbons (PFCs) emissions. It is estimated that CO2 equivalent burden of aluminum industry is about 1% of total anthropogenic emissions. The anticipated world growth rate is 3.5% for aluminum demand. Through measures to reduce both direct and indirect CO2 emissions, electricity consumption was reduced from 25 kWh / kg of Aluminum in 1998 to 15 kWh / kg of Aluminum produced in 2008. It is targeted to further reduce it to 10.8 kWh. Aluminum industry is also responsible to about 60% of all PFC emissions. The PFC emissions are harmful to environment, accumulate in surrounding vegetation and contaminate. Efforts to reduce PFC emissions from aluminum industry started early and reduced to 0.5-1 kg / tonne in 1990 [1] from 12-15 kg / tonne in 1940. Since 1990s to 2000 it further reduced to 0.2 -0.4 kg / tonne as seen in Fig. 1. The Global Aluminum Sustainable Development Initiative (GADSI), targets perfluorocarbon (PFC) specific emissions reduction of 80% for 2010 relative to 1990."

United states reserves of oil and gas have been steadily declining while consumption of petroleum products has continued to increase. The nut result has been an ever increasing shortfall between supply and demand. This imbalance has been made up by imports of both oil and gas causing a strain on the United States Balance of Payments. To complicate the situation further, exporting nations have recently formed a cartel and dramatically increased the selling price of petroleum products. To meet U.S. energy demand, increased attention has been drawn to the production of synthetic oil and gas from coal. To date, considerable research has been conducted and is continuing on various processes for liquefaction and gasification of coal. Some of these processes are now in the pilot plant stage and at least one demonstration plant has been proposed. The coal conversion complexes envisioned will be very large, requiring substantial capital investments and abundant reserves of coal. Coal production to feed these proposed complexes has been estimated on the order of 75,000 tons per day. With the viability of these projects becoming economically attractive, the Office of Coal Research initiated a contract with Fluor Utah to determine and define the problems of surface mining coal at very high mining rates, under varied physical, geographic, and climatic conditions. The flow of recent events in the Middle East has created a greater sense of urgency for this study.

A measurement-based ground control management system, commonly employed in coal mines, has been successfully implemented in a UK potash mine operating at a depth of over 800 m. This system includes the routine deployment of telltales in roadways throughout the mine to mitigate against the risk of large-scale roof falls and the deployment of detailed ?design monitoring? instrumentation for ongoing design verification. The routine monitoring systems used in coal mines have not been, to date, commonly applied in potash mines, despite the similar, variable weak geology and associated ground control hazards. Monitoring information from the site indicates that telltales can be deployed to monitor roof conditions, with action levels based on differential rates of strain, as opposed to absolute movement.

A general study of gold refractory arsenopyrite-pyrite concentrate bioleaching has been carried out including two continuous bioleach testworks at different sizes, namely one at a laboratory scale with a 100 I unit at a 2 kg/d dry solid flowrate and the other at a pilot scale at a 100 kg/d dry solid flowrate. Both tests show a 80% bioleaching of arsenopyrite in about four days of treatment and with the same kinetic. Pyrrhotite is attacked at the earlier stage of the bioleaching but pyrite remains unaffected. The weak potential of oxidation associated with the decomposition of arsenopyrite and the abundance of arsenite leads to a high grade of elemental sulfur in the bioresidue which consumes the major part of the cyanide during the gold recovery. Furthermore. the arsenite and ferrous produced in solution have to be oxidized to obtain a stable precipitate in the waste products and as outlined in previous works of other authors on this subject the addition of iron to obtain a Fe/As molar ratio at least above 3 is necessary. The agitation equipment used in the pilot unit allowed an optimization study calculation for scaling-up the design and power requirements of an industrial installation. For the pretreatment of a gold refractory As high-graded concentrate the reagent cost has the greatest part in the operating cost of the biooxidation step due to the necessary retreatment of the biosolution. In that conditions the power cost is quite marginal. actually it is significant for the treatment of pure pyrite.

It's not news to you that the United States is highly vulnerable to potential problems in supply of critical and strategic metals, and that these metals - chromium, for example - are employed in important bearing alloys. It's also not news to you that there is a significant challenge to improve durability and life of bearing systems which contribute to conservation as well as productivity. The objectives of this workshop are to identify available technologies and opportunities for new technologies in conservation, substitution, and displacement of critical and strategic metals in bearing systems. These considerations are among the most viable options for reducing vulnerability to a cutoff of chromium and other critical metals and action should be taken to identify and develop those technologies now rather than after a crisis is upon us.

Land utilized by the mining industry from 1930 through 1971 amounted to 3.65 million acres, or 0.16 percent of the land mass in the United States. Land reclaimed during the same period was 1.46 million acres, or 40 percent of the land utilized. This report includes data on land use for wastes from underground and surface mining, for wastes from mill operations, and on subsidence. Data on land use and reclamation were obtained from operating companies, mining organizations, appropriate State agencies, and others concerned with such activities. The 10 leading States in land used for mining in 1971 were, in decreasing order, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Ohio, California, Florida, West Virginia, Illinois, Minnesota, and Indiana. Mineral commodities accounting for a major portion of land use are, in decreasing order, bituminous coal, sand and gravel, stone, copper, phosphate rock, iron ore, and clay; for coal, these commodities are produced principally by surface mining operations. Reclamation over the 42-year period was largely on lands utilized for surface mining of bituminous coal. New surface mining methods, particularly for coal, incorporate some form of land restoration.

In open-pit mining, estimating post blasting displacement and spillage accurately is essential to guarantee operational efficiency, ensure alignment with production plans and their associated key performance indicators. The absence of predictive modeling tools on blasting operations results in several critical challenges, including operational reworks due to deviations in material displacement, significant discrepancies between mine and plant (ore grade dilution included), misalignment with the reported production plan, and increased operational costs due to inefficient use of resources. This study, conducted at Los Bronces Mine operated by Angloamerican, Chile, addresses the application of a three-dimensional simulation tool that, through numerical modeling, is capable of predicting post blast rock displacement. The implementation was carried out in a pit phase characterized by blasts near the pit boundaries, with a high risk of material spillage and potential blockage of the only access ramp to the extraction levels. By the integration of key design parameters, such as blast pattern geometry, detonating time, explosive charge distribution and pre and post blast survey, an optimal calibration was achieved and validated in seven blasting events to date, reaching an accuracy greater than 80% in estimating post-blast rock displacement and spillage volumes. Furthermore, this study allowed the evaluation of different pattern alternatives with and without spillage mitigation measures (use of air decks near the free face), obtaining a high correlation and accuracy exceeding 95% in predicting the selected design outcome, supporting optimal design selections. The result highlights the usefulness of the model as a decision-support tool for blasting engineers and short-term planning, by reducing the need for unnecessary operational reworks, improving geological and operational reconciliation, and ensuring the alignment of the extracting plan with production targets. The current average deviation is 15%, with higher deviations observed in blasts with smaller volumes of spill or where the simulated sequence was changed before blasting. The use of this type of three-dimensional numerical modeling represents a significant advancement for blast engineering and the optimization of key performance indicators in open-pit mining operations.
