This work concerns comparison of corrosion resistance of the aircraft aluminum alloy composed of Al - 2.3%Li - 0.1% Zr. The alloy was hot rolled (HR) from 13 mm to a thickness of 4 mm (e = 2.4) and 1 mm (e = 5.2). Corrosion resistance was investigated by Potentiodynamic Polarization Test. The investigation relied on exposure samples in two different corroding medium: 0.5 M NaCl solution and 0.01 M Na2SO4 solution with added 0.01% of Cl- at room temperature. Furthermore, the microstructure was analyzed using the optical microscope with polarized beam. The hardness was measured on lengthwise profile. It was stated that alloy after the largest deformation (equivalent total strain e = 5.2) is characterized by the best mechanical properties and the best corrosion resistance. The alloys in initial state and after deformation to 4 mm (e = 2.4) are characterized by worse corrosion resistance. It is associated with microstructure and density of dislocation in analyzing material.

Copper sulphate solutions are produced during the pressure leaching of first-stage leach residue in a typical base metal refinery process. Apart from impurities such as selenium and tellurium, this leach solution also contains other precious metals (Rh, Ru, and it) due to dissolution in the pressure leaching stage. Selenium and tellurium are removed from the leach solution by precipitation with sulphurous acid, since these elements negatively affect electrowinning. This study investigates the feasibility of modifying the Se/Te precipitation process step to achieve significant rhodium precipitation in addition to selenium and tellurium precipitation, in order to reduce the rhodium inventory of the process. Thiourea, S02, formaldehyde, formic acid, and sodium thiosulphate were evaluated to determine which of these reagents would achieve the highest Rh precipitation. Based on these screening tests, SO2 and thiourea were selected to be used as precipitation reagents in optimization tests. During these optimization tests, the operating temperature (80 to 150°C) and the amount of reagent added (80 to 140 per cent excess) were varied to evaluate the effects that these operating conditions have on the precipitation behaviour of Rh as well as Se, Te, Cu, and Ni, and to propose appropriate operating conditions. It was found that thiourea resulted in good Rh and Se precipitation (typically in excess of 90 per cent), but precipitated noticeably more copper and nickel from the solution than when SO2 was used. In addition, thiourea had poor Te removal characteristics. SO2 achieved a maximum of 70 per cent precipitation of the rhodium. Faster kinetics and a larger extent of Te precipitation were, however, observed when using SO2 compared to thiourea.

Mineral aggregate, the most widely used mineral resource globally, has attracted little academic or public interest. Of all mining developments, the aggregate resource is seldom factored into resource management decisions. This lack of recognition to the strategic aggregate resource has significant economic, environmental, and social implications. Impact to the economics, the environment, and the community coincide with the key elements of the United Nations concept of ?sustainable development?. To build on the concept, the mining sector contracted the International Institute for Environment and Development to assess how mining activity contributes to sustainability. As a result, a useful assessment process was developed by the Mining, Minerals and Sustainable Development (MMSD) Task Group entitled ?Seven Questions to Sustainability: How to Assess the Contribution of Mining and Mineral Activities.? In Alberta, recent opposition to mineral resource development by community residents offers an opportunity to employ the MMSD?s assessment procedure. The public opposition to the mining activity was addressed through a stakeholder planning process initiated by the municipal council of Sturgeon County, Alberta. As a result the Calahoo/Villeneuve Area Structure Plan (CASP) was formulated and adopted. To measure the effectiveness of the CASP planning process in terms of sustainability, this paper applies the MMSD?s Seven Question assessment to the Calahoo/Villeneuve Area Structure Plan.

One of the most important goals of the experiments is to determine deformation and strength of the rock specimen under applying triaxial load, the status of failure condition is one of the subjects which can be used in soil mechanic and foundation engineering applications. To investigate the effect of confining pressure on the triaxial test, the rock has been considered as bonded-particles method and has been simulated by particle flow code three dimensions (PFC3D). This model, does not have pre-existing microcracks and all the particles have the same size (2 mm diameter), equal to the real specimen shape. To compare the mechanical behavior and failure pattern of the numerical and experimental results at uniaxial and triaxial tests at the same conditions, the Young's modulus, Possion's ratio as well as maximum axial stress have been considered. On the other hand, the microcracks growth and change of failure pattern at the modelling of the uniaxial and triaxial tests with different confining pressures up to failure point were reported. According to the experimental work, the number density of microcracks decreases from starting value and remains almost constant up to the failure beyond that point. The comparison of the numerical and experimental results of maximum axial stress and the Possion's ratio revealed good accordance. The initial number density of microcracks at the model was zero and increased while microcracking. Also, the sudden increment around the maximum stress was observed which is because of unstable growing of microcracks near the maximum stress. In all uniaxial and triaxial tests with different confining stresses, the number density of microcracks during the failure remains almost constant which can be considered as a proof of failure occurring in the model. The experimental results indicate the similar trend as well.

Yttrium and rare-earth element. pegmatite dikes are associated with a peralkaline granitic and nephelene syenite complex near Dora Bay on southern Prince of Wales Island. Mineralized dikes were mapped and sampled during USBM investigations in 1987 and 1988. Coarse-grained pegmatite dikes, which emanated as late-stage magmatic fluids from the intrusion, further evolved into vein-dikes and ultimately silica-rich veins. The dikes can be traced up to two miles along a north-south zone. Lithophile elements exhibit a pronounced zonation in vein-dikes and veins that are distal to the Dora Bay complex with increasing values correlating with increasing distance from the complex. The pattern of mineralization suggests very late stage magmatic fluids containing the incompatable lithophile elements were injected into a preexisting north-south fracture zone. REE mineralogy exhibit fine-grained intergrowths of principally thalenite and bastnaesite with lessor monazite and eudialyte. Euxenite contains most of the columbium values and zircon is commonly associated with the dikes. Estimates of inferred and hypothetical resource tonnage range from 1.7 X 1C6 to 8.5 X 106 st for two deposits. Contained RED (including yttrium) averages 0.5 pct and ranges up to 2.0 pct. Deposits are of polymineralic composition and about half of this resource comprises the heavy yttrium subgroup.

The primary advantages of DET are that itsdetonation pressure can be adjusted over a wick range and its impulse can be controlled independently by adjusting its thickness and configuration. Because DET has a much lower detonation velocity than conventional explosives, the pulse duration produced by DET is as much as 10 times longer than the pulse duration produced by conventional explosives for equal explosive weights. These features of DET present several advantages to the mining industry. For example, DET can be tailored so as to control fragment size and distribution to enhance extraction of desired elements from ore or breakup of specific regions."

The oil shales of the Green River Formation in the United States have been considered as a source of liquid hydrocarbons since 1908, with the first retort constructed in Colorado in 1917. However, it was not until 1944 that the mining characteristics of oil shale were investigated in a systematic manner. During the period 1944 through 1956, the Selective Mine and the Demonstration Mine (also referred to as the Anvil Points Mine) were operated by the U. S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) near Rifle, Colorado. Significant progress was made in developing a room and pillar mining method by which oil shale could be mined safely at a very low cost per ton. Mechanical properties of oil shale were determined, safe room spans and roof support techniques were established, and drilling and blasting methods for oil shale were developed. As a follow-on to this USBM effort, a consortium of six oil companies with Mobil Oil Company as project manager carried out a research program during the period 1964-68 at the Mobil mine, located in the vicinity of the Anvil Points mine. Rock mechanics investigations were conducted as a part of this research program, and consisted of laboratory studies, in-situ stress determinations, and roof and pillar instrumentation. This paper will discuss the findings at the Anvil Points mine and Mobil mine to illustrate the stability considerations in underground oil shale mining.

The Ag/S specific ion electrode has been evaluated for analysis of both free and total cyanide. Metal cyanide solutions were prepared from reagent grade compounds and by stoichiometric fixture of the metal with a potassium cyanide solution. Solutions containing Cu+1, Ni+2, Fe+2, Fe+3 and Zn+2 complexes were analyzed prior to and following EDTA pre treatment. This effort provides an understanding of the effect of each metal cyanide complex on the SIE analysis of free and "total" cyanide.

In 1874 my attention was called to what seemed to me an interesting and new nickel and cobalt combination found in Ludwig and Carter's copper mine, near Mason Valley, Esmeralda County, Nevada. With the assistance of Mr. A. Hebberling I made several partial analyses of the mineral or minerals. I also communicated with my friend, Professor H. B. Cornwall, of the John C. Green School of Science, College of New Jersey, who analyzed a couple of specimens which I forwarded to him. The copper ore occurs in the mine principally as carbonate and to a certain extent as silicate, the latter generally in connection with clay seams or bands. In some places, together with the copper silicate and clay, generally interstratified with them, there occurred a compact shining black mineral (a) containing nickel and cobalt. Occasionally, in cavities, in connection with (a) was found a black substance (b), either massive and in this case very similar to (a) but with driller lustre, or forming an incrustation with rough and botryoidal surface and radial-fibrous structure, or granular and earthy. A few specimens were found having on the surface very fragile black needles (c) sometimes 1/2-inch long, interspersed with needles of malachite. The CODELCO-CHILE Teniente Converter Technology, is presently being applied in four Chilean smelters (Caletones, Chuquicamata, Potrerillos and ENAMI-Ventanas). A Teniente Converter is due to be used at ENAMI-Hernan Videla Lira (Paipote) smelter in the near future. Also, a Teniente Converter is to be installed as part of a retrofit project for Nkana smelter of Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines Ltd. (ZCCM). The charge to be treated through this smelter will consist of a blend of concentrate arisings from the various concentrators within the ZCCM group. The present status on the application of the Teniente Converter Technology at Caletones smelter as well as its projected performance when used at Nkana smelter, are presented in this paper. The design operational basis, autogenous smelting throughputs, concentrate to matte ratios and benefits due to the use of technical oxygen, are presented and analysed.

L'usinage fait partie des opérations industrielles qui peuvent causer des problèmes de santé au travail et sur l'environnement. La plupart des particules de poussières produites pendant toutes les opérations d'usinage à sec ou lubrifie causent des nuisances environnementales graves. Le travail propose étudie l’influence des paramètres de coupe, des alliages et des états des matériaux sur la formation des copeaux et sur la génération de poussière lors de l'usinage à sec. Deux modes d'usinage (le fraisage et le perçage) sont abordés. Une loi reliant la ténacité des matériaux aux émissions de poussières est proposée. Les effets des matériaux et de leurs conditions, ainsi que des procédés d'usinage sur la génération des poussières ont été mis en évidence. Des mécanismes de formation de poussières sont identifiés et reliés à la formation des copeaux.

This chapter summarizes data on crude mineral production for the United States, its island possessions, and the Common-wealth of Puerto Rico. Included also are tables that show the principal mineral commodities exported from and imported into the United States, and that compare world and U.S. mineral production. Except for the mineral fuel commodities, the detailed data from which these tables were derived are contained in the individual commodity chapters of volume I and in the State chapters of volume II of this edition of the Minerals Yearbook. In October 1977, responsibility for the collection of data on mineral fuels-coal, petroleum, natural gas, and natural gas liquids-was transferred to the newly created Department of Energy. Although chapters covering these commodities will no longer appear in Volume I of the Minerals Yearbook, quantity and value data have been included in most of these summary tables to maintain statistical consistency in State and national value of overall crude mineral output. This shift in responsibility has also resulted in changes to the composition of the "Nonmetals" and "Mineral Fuels" groups in table 1 and table 2. The commodities-asphalt and related bitumens (natural), carbon dioxide (natural), helium, and peat-have been removed from the "Mineral Fuels" group, and are now included under the "Nonmetals" group. There has been no change in the components of the "Metals" group.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B.Sc. (Eng.) (Mining) degree As a partial fulfilment for the degree of B.Sc. (Eng) (mining) at the University of the Witwatersrand, a dissertation was to be completed in the mining industry. This was done at Finsch mine, with the purpose of determining the best solution to the required secondary breaking problem. In order to complete the study of the secondary blasting method available for use in the new block 4, cave mining method at Finsch mine the following problem statement was identified and solved ?The methods currently in use, for the secondary breaking of oversize rocks at their source in the current production levels, are to be investigated, and their applicability to the new block 4mining project determined?. To effectively achieve this problem statement above; time was spent researching and investigating, in depth, the methods that are currently in use at both Finsch and Koffiefontein mines; so as to gain practical knowledge of these. The methods were identified and independently evaluated, taking into consideration factors such as costs of the equipment, time to break oversize rocks, advantages, disadvantages, safety and labour requirements, etc. This in turn then allowed for a direct comparison between the methods and the decision as to the best to apply to the new block 4 production level. The methods that were investigated included: ?Concussion blasting, where concussion bombs and lay-on charges are used to break hang-ups and boulders. ?Drill and blast methods, where holes are drilled in large rocks and charged manually with explosives. ?Emulsion secondary blasting, which is a new project in use at Koffiefontein mine from African Explosives Limited. ?The Ro-BustTM breaking system, a hydro-fracturing breaking system. Once all the methods had been evaluated and compared it was found that the Ro-BustTM Breaking system was the most applicable for the breaking of boulders, with, the Emulsion Blasting System being used for hang-ups. Abstract-It has long been recognized that platinum-group-element (PGE) deposits in layered intrusions preferentially occur in intrusions that crystallized from high-Mg parent magmas. Recent studies suggest that evaluation of any given intrusion for economic PGE potential should also include assessment of the PGE, sulfur and chlorine concentrations in the cumulates and potential parent liquids. PGE: Magmas that contain relatively abundant Pt and Pd are the best candidates for forming economic deposits. Although analyses of coeval sills and dikes are the best indicators of primary magmatic PGE concentrations, analysis of the cumulates themselves is also valuable. For example, within the Stillwater complex, background PGE values in cumulates from the ultramafic sections of the complex contain, on average, several 10s of ppb Pt and Pd. Background concentrations of this order are suggestive that the magma was not depleted in the PGE. Sulfur: Conventional petrogenetic models for the formation of PGE deposits in layered intrusions require the PGE to have been concentrated during a magmatic sulfide-saturation event. In contrast, some hydrothermal models suggest that sulfur and the PGE were mobilized from footwall cumulates by upward- migrating, high-temperature hydrothermal fluids. Both models suggest that significant PGE deposits are likely to occur at and below the level where stratigraphic increases in whole rock sulfur concentrations occur. Chlorine: In both the Stillwater and Bushveld complexes the cumulate sequences below the major PGE-bearing zones contain anomalous Cl-rich apatite. The chlorapatite component of apatite in these rocks may exceed 40% and, in the Stillwater complex, typically exceeds 90%. It is stressed that pristine igneous mineral analysis and not whole rock data be used, as whole rock Cl concentrations may be affected by very localized (grain boundary), low-temperature alteration. Intrusions that crystallized from high-Mg, high-Cl magmas appear to have the best potential to host significant PGE deposits.

CONDITIONS in underground mining are so variable that in approach-ing the problem of the economies effected by the use of pressure-treated mine ties and mine timbers, it is necessary to secure specific data for each mine. Facts must first be dug out to show the service life of untreated timber and the reason for its failure. Generally speaking, decay is the usual cause of failure, but in some mines mechanical destruction is an important factor. Occasionally the two causes combine to produce fail-ures, and it is difficult to determine positively which factor is responsible. In making comparisons, it is always necessary to start with the cost in place and for this reason there must be accurate information covering the labor cost of installation and the labor cost of renewals. When treated timber is used, it is necessary to know the specifications for the treating process, whether the timber was painted, dipped, treated open tank, or impregnated under pressure according to standard specifica-tions. It is also necessary to know the preservative used and the amount of the preservative that was retained by the timber after treatment. It is also well to know whether the timber was thoroughly air-seasoned before treatment or was green at the time it was treated. The kind of timber available, both untreated and treated, must be known and all of the factors listed above must be taken into consideration in the study of any problem.

Development and Validation of Ore Characterisation Test and its Use in Variability Campaigns of Comminution Circuits Impact testing was developed by assessing the fragmentation characteristics of ore samples after controlled impact. Standard methods are, however, limited to relatively large and coarse samples, which thus precludes their use in early stages of projects, as well as where only drill cores are available. The method described in this paper is based on the same concepts of controlled ore breakage, but using relatively smaller samples. It is particularly useful in assessing the variability of ore characteristics in early stages of greenfield projects, as well as in predicting the performance of existing grinding circuits. A validation program was carried out in which a good adherence to the original test results was obtained. The results were used for (a) simulation of a copper comminution circuit as a function of the ore characteristics, and (b) evaluation of sampling protocols used for assessing fragmentation characteristics.

Few men in the coal-mining industry have had experience in metal mining as well, as has Carroll A. Garner. He went to the Arizona copper country immediately after graduating from Penn State in mining engineering in 1910, and worked in the engineering departments of the Miami and Inspiration companies for two years. Then he came back to Penn State far a year as an instructor in mining engineering before embarking in the coal industry. He was born in Ashland, Pa., July 6, 1889, and reared there, in the heart of the anthracite district, which undoubtedly influenced his choice of a professional career. The green Pennsylvania hills were preferred to the Arizona cactus country. His first coal-mining job was with the Lehigh Valley Coal Co., of which he was division engineer at Hazleton when he joined the Institute in 1917. He gave that up to go to Ohio as head of the Fernwood Mining Co. in 1921, but even that was too far west and after two months he was back in Pennsylvania as assistant general manager of the company that has since monopolized his services the Jeddo Highland Coal Co. Since 1927 he has been vice-president in charge of operations of both the Jeddo-Highland and the Hazle Brook Coal Companies, Jeddo, Pa. Between them they normally produce about 1,500,000 tons of what Mr. Garner will readily admit is the very highest grade of anthracite, utilizing the services of some 2600 men.

The rock salt deposits of the U. S. occur in five major basins: 1) the Eastern Basin (which includes parts of Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, West Virginia, and Ontario) ; 2) the Gulf Coast Basin (the northern rim of which includes parts of Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Texas, while its southern rim includes parts of the Isthmus of Tehuampetic and the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico), 3) the Southwestern Salt Basin (which includes parts of Kansas, Colorado, Oklahoma, Texas, and New Mexico), 4) the Williston Basin (which under- lies parts of North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, and Saskatchewan), and 5) the Green River Basin (whose periphery underlies parts of Wyoming, Utah, and Colorado). The greatest salt production in the U. S. is obtained from the Eastern Basin,-particularly from the areas of Michigan, Ohio, and Ontario. In 1958 the salt production from these areas amounted to 8.7 million tons or 35.3 pct of the combined total produced in the U. S. and Canada. Of the 24,286,000 tons produced by Canada and the United States, 6,443,000 tons were in the form of rock salt from dry mining, while 17,843,000 tons were produced from wells in the form of artificial brine, the result of dissolving the rock salt formation by fresh water.
