Experiments conducted with limestone dusts and dolomitic marble dusts have indicated that when rock dust is wetted and subsequently dried, it becomes a solid, non-dispersible cake. However, in order to be effective, rock dust must be able to disperse as individual particles to inert. To counteract this, rock dust manufacturers created treated rock dusts that will resist caking after moisture exposure. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers conducted a series of laboratory-scale experiments on four base rock dusts and their treated counterparts to assess the effectiveness of various anti-caking additives after being exposed to moisture and then dried. The dusts were exposed to moisture using humidity cabinets having a high relative humidity (99% RH) and by also exposing the rock dust bed to water through bottom wicking. The dusts were then evaluated for dispersibility after drying using the NIOSH-designed dust dispersion chamber. The anticaking additives were different concentrations of stearic acid, oleic acid, and xylene-based surfactants. All results were compared to a reference rock dust used to conduct large-scale experiments in the Lake Lynn Laboratory (LLL), Fairchance, PA. When the untreated dusts were dried after exposure to moisture for one day, no dispersion was measured. However, rock dusts treated with anti-caking agents were readily dispersible even after exposure to moisture for six months. This report details the analysis and characterization of anti-caking additives using the NIOSH-designed dispersion chamber and the 20-L explosion test chamber. INTRODUCTION In order for a coal dust explosion to propagate, five elements are required. In addition to the fire triangle in which three elements are necessary to sustain a fire—fuel (coal dust), heat (ignition source), and an oxidizer (oxygen in air)—a combustible dust explosion requires dispersion of a dust cloud (pressure wave) and confinement of a dust cloud (underground mine entry) (1). Coal dust explosions can originate anywhere in a mine. For example, when a small volume of a flammable methane and air mixture is ignited in a closed end, the high-temperature gases rapidly expand to create a pressure wave, sometimes referred to as a “pioneer wave,” that may steepen into a shock wave as it propagates away from the ignition source. The shock wave produces a wind that disperses the dust preferentially from any elevated and exposed surfaces (roof, ribs, belt structure, cribbing, etc.). Factors that are known to affect the intensity of an explosion are the dust particle size, the location of the dust within the entry, the dust dispersibility, and the volatility of the coal dust (1). Particles less than 75 μm (< 200 mesh) in size are most reactive (2). Dusts that are located on the roof, ribs, and elevated surfaces are more readily dispersed than dusts on the floor. Therefore, application of quality rock dust in sufficient quantities is essential to inert coal dust and to prevent continued flame propagation. 30 CFR 75.402 and 75.403 require 80% total incombustible content be maintained within 40 ft of the face, and 30 CFR 75.2 defines rock dust acceptable for use in underground coal mines. It also defined that “when rock dust is wetted and dried, will not form a cake”.

Brown and Yant6/ recently described a microprojection method for determining the particle-size distribution and number concentration of samples of dust collected from the air by such samplers as the Owens jet dust counter7/ and the thermal precipitator8/. This method was developed to obviate or reduce the eyestrain consequent to the regular filar-micrometer method9/ and to save time and work. The article stated that work was in progress on a microprojection method for courting impinger dust samples; this article describes the method developed. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The assistance of the personnel of the Ventilation Department of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., Butte, Mont., in developing this method and particularly in suggesting a suitable material to use for the microprojector screen is sincerely appreciated. An evaluation was recently performed on a district recirculation system at a trona mine in Granger, Wyoming. A 1.52m (5 ft) diameter, 37.3kw (50 hp) vane axial fan was installed in a crosscut between the intake and return airways and recirculated approximately 31.4 m&apos;/sec (66,578 ft&apos;/min) of air back into the intake. This amounted to a recirculation factor of approximately 20 pct of the return air. This air was part of the primary ventilation to three different continuous miner sections at operating distances of between 6l0m (2,000 ft) and 1,829m (6,000 ft) from the recirculation fan. The mine environment was constantly monitored for respirable dust, methane, and carbon monoxide in the operating sections and in the main intake and return entries. In addition, air samples were taken with and without the recirculation system during the evaluation and analyzed using gas chromatography. The results of this study showed only small increases in dust, while all other mine contaminants remained at such low levels that it was impossible to determine any relative changes from the recirculation system. Because of this, a brief SF. tracer gas analysis study was subsequently performed to more precisely determine an increase in a mine contaminant with the recirculation system.

Explosions in underground mines and surface facilities such as processing plants are caused by confined accumulations of combustible dust and/or flammable gas mixed with air in the presence of an ignition source. Underground explosions can be prevented by minimizing methane concentrations through methane drainage and ventilation, by adding sufficient rock dust to inert the coal dust, and by eliminating ignition sources. The effectiveness of rock dust in arresting explosion propagation was proven by experiment and practice (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11). The precise mechanism by which rock dust (generally pulverized limestone dust) quenches flame has not been fully explained, but is believed to be absorption of thermal energy from the heated gases and absorption of radiant energy, which reduces the preheating of unburned coal particles ahead of the flame front. One measurable aspect of explosibility is incombustible content. In order to determine whether enough rock dust is applied, 30 CFR1 § 75.403, Maintenance of Incombustible Content of Rock Dust, requires at least 80% incombustible content on the roof, ribs, and floor of underground coal mines. 30 CFR § 75.403-1 further defines the incombustible content as follows: ?Moisture contained in the combined coal dust, rock dust and other dusts shall be considered as a part of the incombustible content of such mixture.? In order to determine the incombustible content of the mine dust, samples of deposited dust from specified areas in a mine must be collected, analyzed, and then compared with the minimum standard of 80%. The traditional low temperature ashing (LTA) approach to determine if a coal and rock dust mixture is compliant with the inerting requirement consumes the coal dust and considers the remaining material to be inert. Compliance with the law is then determined by comparing the measured percentage of inert material of the representative band sample with the pre-established requirement of 80%. The incombustible content of the sample includes rock dust, the amount of moisture as received at the lab, and the inherent ash in the coal. The LTA method is not itself a direct measure of explosibility but is a surrogate that calculates a single parameter associated with large-scale Bruceton Experimental Mine (BEM) explosion test results conducted with dry rock dust. This method assumes a homogenous mixture with no layering of rock dust and coal dust. Float coal dust is a serious explosion hazard if it accumulates on top of the rock dust and is not mixed with the rock dust (12). Mitchell and Nagy (13) studied the effectiveness of water as an inerting agent for the coal dust explosion hazard. The study emphasized that surface water evaporates readily from dusts. Thus, in a passageway where the dust is wet, changes in weather or the ventilation system could dry the dust and make it unsafe in a relatively short period of time. Where adequate rock dust has been applied, this drying effect is not a factor. However, if the mine depends upon the moisture content as part of the incombustible content, fluctuations in the dust surface moisture within a mine can render moisture content an ineffective and inconsistent measure of safety. Additionally, if sufficient moisture is absorbed and subsequently relinquished by rock dust, a cake can form and render the rock dust ineffectual. The trend has long been recognized that mine explosions occur primarily during the winter season when the humidity is low for long periods of time (14, 15, 16). In light of this trend and due to the potential variability of the moisture content of the dust, it may not be prudent to include variable surface moisture in the total incombustible content of the sample. Instead, surface moisture should be viewed as an additional safety measure as long as the rock dust is dispersible. However, moisture limits the ability of the rock dust to disperse and can significantly reduce its capacity to effectively inert propagating explosions (2, 13, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22). Given the methods by which the as-received moisture and incombustible content are determined, dust samples from the 2010 MSHA database were assessed to determine the variability of the moisture content throughout a year and how often the measured as-received moisture might have affected the dust explosibility determination if removed. The findings were then verified by observation in laboratory studies and within the NIOSH OMSHR Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM).

The term "fusain" was first adopted from the French by the American geologist J. J. Stevenson in 1911, according to Wheeler, (1),3 who applies it to that portion of coal resembling charcoal, which he treats as one of the four ingredients of banded bituminous coal. The term has since been adopted by American writers. The Germans use it with slightly different spelling - namely, fusit. It is the equivalent of "mother-of-coal" and "mineral charcoal" of the earlier British writers. The English word fusain is also applied to "a crayon of fine charcoal" and is derived from the Latin root fusus. OCCURRENCE OF FUSAIN IN COAL AND ITS RECOGNITION Fusain is fairly widely distributed in coals of all ranks in varying amounts. It is almost always present in very thin sheets between the bedding planes of the banded coal constituents and presents a jet-black silky appearance who n the coal is split away. As fusain has little cohesive power the coal splits readily along the planes where it occurs. Such fusain bands often attain appreciable thickness -- frequently 1/4 to 3/4 inch. -Beet (2) has reported a maximum thickness of 2 inches for fusain partings, and Sinnatt (3) has found it in the form of plates and lumps; one lump taken by him from the Peacock mine weighed 3-3/4 pounds. Bore (4) has found it in coal balls. Sinnatt (3) states that fusain occurs in two forms, "the first a hard compact variety occurring rather rarely, which can not be pulverized by pressure of the fingers the second type is the common substance" -- that is, a very friable, easily pulverized material. The writer has also found the two types of fusain in the same coal bed and has observed that the hard variety contained considerable calcium carbonate, which probably entered the material in situ by infiltration. Sinnatt further remarks that the layers of fusain (soft type) usually contain less moisture than the coal (or lose it more readily on exposure), and when exposed they quickly change to flocculent powder so that the fines of the coal as mined are likely to contain a major proportion of this substance.

New Nedre Fiskumfoss is a construction project in North Trøndelag, Namsen River. The purpose of the contract is construction of a new hydropower plant, that will phase out the existing power plant in the same waterfall. The contract consists of a tunnel system with cross sections from 16 m2 to 150 m2, powerhouse and transformer in rock caverns, 6 shafts and major works with inlet and outlet below river level. Technical challenges consist of demanding design on rock extraction, cofferdams, solid constructions with challenging design and demanding rebar work, as well as restrictions and unpredictable water flow in a national salmon river.

The new Los Angeles, California JWPCP effluent outfall tunnel will transport secondary-treated effluent from the Joint Water Pollution Control Plant in Carson to White Point Manifold. The tunnel will be approximately 7 miles (11 km) long with a finished internal diameter of 18 ft (5.5 m). The TBM is designed to cope with high water pressure up to 10 bar. The geotechnical challenges are due to the heterogeneous subsurface conditions: in the first half of the alignment, the tunnel runs through soils with a low overburden under urban areas, and, in the second half, the tunnel runs through extremely weak, intensely faulted rock masses with high overburden. Following an overview of the project, this paper focuses on the northern portion of the alignment and presents a decision-making procedure developed during pre-excavation phase in order to cope with the expected heterogeneous conditions during mining. The risk assessment and the TBM operational design of the southern portion will be dealt with in a future paper.

"The Bayer process involves the digestion of bauxite in caustic liquors at high temperature and pressure. Typically the digestion section of the plant involves the heating of liquors up to the digestion temperature followed by flashing of the digestion product to atmospheric pressure with the flashed steam used to pre-heat the incoming cold slurry. Despite the heat recovery, the digestion process is a high consumer of energy. The application of tube digestion technology in such plants has resulted in significant improvements in refinery energy efficiency with associated benefits of process simplification and refinery flow sheet capital cost reduction. This paper reviews the potential application of this technology to other metals within the non-ferrous industry.THE BAYER PROCESSA typical Bayer flow sheet is shown in Figure 1. The raw feed material bauxite (containing aluminium hydroxide as gibbsite Al(OH)3 and boehmite AlO(OH)) is digested in caustic liquors (caustic soda is the solvent) at high temperature and pressure. This process extracts the alumina and silica and any carbon present on the ore. The slurry is then flashed down to atmospheric condition allowing for heat recovery from the flashed vapour and producing slurry supersaturated in alumina.Following the digestion process the mud is removed via thickening and then pressure filtration to remove fine particulate and produce a clarified liquor with dissolved alumina in solution. The resulting pregnant liquor is then cooled allowing the alumina in solution to precipitate as aluminium trihydrate Al(OH)3. The precipitated hydrate is then filtered and washed and classified into fine and coarse fractions. The fine material is returned to the precipitation process as seed while the coarse fraction is calcined at high temperature to produce alumina. The filtrate from the filtration process (spent liquor) is then heated by the incoming pregnant liquor before being fed to an evaporation process which produced the strong caustic liquor required in the digestion process. Finally, the mud from the thickening process is washed to recover caustic and then fed to tailings ponds. The washer overflow is then mixed with the digester product to increase super-saturation."

This study aims to investigate the effect of combined mechanical and ultrasonic milling on the size reduction of talc. Firstly, the talc sample was wet ground in a stirred media mill for five different times (30, 60, 90, 120, and 150 min), and the optimum result was subsequently achieved with treatment by ultrasonication. The effects of amplitude (20, 35, and 50 μm), solid content (2.5, 5, 7.5, and 10%), and sonication time (60, 120, and 240 min) on the sizes of the final product were investigated. The pre-milling by wet grinding caused a decrease in the grinding resistance of talc. Sequential ultrasonic treatment, which was applied to the talc sample, generated smaller particles in comparison to those acquired by stirred media milling alone. Experimental results were assessed based on the product particle size (d10, d50), reduction ratio, and specific energy consumption. Submicron particles prepared by ultrasonic treatment were perfectly stable compared to stirred media milling alone as investigated in terms of particle size. In addition, the effects of mechanical and ultrasonic milling on structural properties of talc particles were characterized by XRD analysis.

The Ernest Henry Iron Oxide Copper Gold deposit is hosted in a large dilation between two moderately dipping shear zones found in the footwall and hanging wall of the deposit. These shears are controlled by a large diorite intrusion to the north-east and south-west of the deposit, formed ~1660 Ma. A shear zone dubbed the ‘Interlens’ uncovered through underground workings truncates the main orebody into two lenses, and is hypothesized to have formed in conjunction with the Hanging Wall Shear Zone and Footwall Shear Zone. All three shears dip moderately to the SSE (50–140) from open cut exposures through to the current mining horizon approximately 800 m below the surface. Routine geological work and a capital drilling campaign has identified a significant flexure in these sub parallel ore bounding shears with increasing depth. A shift in shear orientation in the Interlens over approximately 100 m vertically from ~50° to the SSE to a steep, easterly trend (~85° to the east) is observed in both drill core and exposures in the underground workings. It is hypothesized the diorite intrusive to the south-west of the deposit controls the shear zone geometries at depth. The geometry of the Interlens mirrors the surface expression of the Proterozoic package of the orebounding shears to the south-west of the deposit, suggesting the surface geometries of the shear zones are consistent with depth. Additional drilling to explore the validity of this hypothesis is planned for the near future to better understand the structural controls on the Ernest Henry mineralisation with increasing depth.

Ventilation is undoubtedly the greatest single safety factor in the operation of a coal mine. Any condition or occurrence that interrupts the ventilating current or changes its normal course through the mine workings is a distinct hazard and should be considered as such by every coal-mine owner, operator, and worker. The hazard, of course, is much greater in a mine that is emitting gas, as an explosive mixture can accumulate in a very short period if the ventilating current is interrupted. It is common to find one or more entries producing 600 cubic feet or more of methane per hour. If the ventilating current were short-circuited from these entries for 15 minutes, there would be an accumulation of 150 cubic feet of methane, which, when mixed with enough air to dilute it to the lowest explosive point, would make about 3,000 cubic feet of explosive mixture; this gas could be ignited in almost any normally operated mine by a cutting machine or other electrical equipment. The ignition of this quantity of an explosive gas-air mixture can readily cause an explosion of coal dust that would completely wreck the underground workings and possibly some of the surface structures. In fact, the ignition of one-tenth of the above quantity of an explosive mixture of gas and air might readily start an explosion that would, extend through every part of a large mine. The possibility of occurrence of interruptions to the ventilating current has received comparatively little consideration from mine owners, operators, and workers in many parts of the United States. Such a possibility should be considered in connection with every mine that gives off explosive gas, and steps should be taken to prevent it.

"To explore blast furnace slag as a secondary resource for rare earth elements (REEs), blast furnace slag containing lanthanum (La), cerium (Ce), erbium (Er) and neodymium (Nd) in concentrations of 17, 16, 4 and 44 ppm, respectively, was processed with sulfuric acid while optimizing the parameters of acid concentration, temperature and pulp density. The experiments showed that recovery rates of 92, 36, 35 and 52 percent for La, Ce, Nd and Er, respectively, were achieved at 1 to 5 weight/volume (w/v) percent pulp density using particles smaller than 250 µm and treating with 1 M sulfuric acid for one hour at room temperature. Raising the temperature to 95 °C promoted the dissolutions of Ce and Nd to 89 and 84 percent, respectively, for the same 1 M acid concentration and one-hour duration at 5 w/v percent pulp density. Cyanex 923 was preferred over Cyanex 301 for the purification of REEs from leach liquor. In another route, the leach liquor was subjected to precipitation with 0.5 to 1 M oxalic acid, resulting in a product with 4 to 5 percent concentration of REEs.IntroductionRare earth elements (REEs) are important materials in numerous high-technology applications, but they have high supply risk, giving rise to the study of new sources. The recycling of REEs has been well researched, especially on a small scale, but has not been widely implemented. Less than 1 percent of REEs were recycled in 2011 (Binnemans et al., 2013). REEs occur in a large number of minerals in oxidic compounds, such as oxides, carbonates, phosphates and silicates, and are present as mixtures at 10 to 300 mg/kg concentrations in many rock formations, such as basalts, granites, gneisses, shales and silicate rocks. The most abundant REE in the Earth’s crust is cerium (Ce), at a concentration of 20 to 70 mg/kg, followed by neodymium (Nd) and lanthanum (La), with heavier REEs being less abundant (Binnemans et al., 2013). REEs occur in nature in their oxidized forms in salts and minerals due to their electropositive nature and high affinity for oxygen. The possibility of recovering REEs"

The Big Whopper, one of only four giant economic rare metal pegmatites worldwide, is set to become a producer of the highly valued lithium mineral petalite (LiAlSi4O10) used in glass, ceramics and the specialty glass-ceramics familiar as Corningware® and the new ceramic stovetops. The deposit has a strike length of 1.5 km, a width of up to 80 m and a resource, open in all directions, of 11.6 Mt, grading 25% petalite. It is amenable to open pit mining and Avalon Ventures Ltd. holds a patent on a flotation process that produces an exceptional quality petalite product. The project will also produce: superb quality Na-feldspar which, too, finds use in glass and ceramics; the unusual Rb- K-feldspar for high voltage porcelain insulators; tantalum, in high demand for electronics; lepidolite, an ore of rubidium; and mica and tin. A positive prefeasibility study has been completed and it remains only to undertake bulk sampling and a full feasibility study.

Remnant rib pillars at Castlemaine Goldfields Ltd’s Ballarat Gold Project have been sterilised by the placement of loose rock fill in production stopes. The application of selectively injecting low-viscosity grout into the backfilled stopes to form a stabilised material has enabled recovery of the previously sterilised pillars. This paper outlines the engineering design, quality control and quality assurance program implemented to ensure the safe and efficient recovery of the rib pillars. "Ethylene has been produced in aqueous solution from CO2 by the electrochemical reduction driven by a natural energy. This process is useful for storing a large amount of the natural energy. In the closed system, the conversion efficiency of CO2 is almost 100%, and the maximum selectivity for the formation of ethylene is more than 70%. On the other hand, the current efficiency for the competitive reduction of water is less than 10%. The electrolysis is practicable under such special conditions as three-phase interface consisting of gas, solution and metal, concentrated solution of potassium halide, low pH and copper or copper halide-confined metal electrode. These requirements are thoroughly examined, and the grounds to reply upon are revealed. A series of chemical apparatuses including an electrolytic cell in a large scale are designed for the ethylene production, which allow us continuously to supply raw CO2 and to extract the product.IntroductionIn connection with the depletion of the petroleum reserve, much attention has been paid to the utilization of natural energies such as sunlight, wind force and waves. However, these energies are always changeable, and some means of storing them are necessary for the common use. In general, natural energies are transformed to the electric energy at the time of utilization, but the electricity is not very storable. This is one of the reasons why the application of natural energy is not so expanded. On the other hand, the storing of natural energy by plants is very skilful. In the photosynthesis, solar energy is transformed to chemical energy by fixing carbon dioxide."

A gold mine in southern China has transitioned from an open pit operation to a fully underground mine. An overhand mining method is used which requires the mined stopes to be filled with backfill having an unconfined compressive strength of at least 0.35MPa. Tailings from the process plant is deposited into separate flotation and Carbon in Leach (CIL) tailings storage facilities. The tailings has a high fines content and the thickener on site could only produce a dilute flotation tailings at a solids content of about 30 wt%. This resulted in two undesirable outcomes: the density of flotation tailings in the Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) was significantly lower than planned so that the TSF could not store the life of mine tailings and that the backfill product had to include a high percentage of manufactured aggregate and increased cement content to achieve the required strength. This paper presents results of a tailings study which identified that the flotation TSF would be capable of storing the remaining life of mine tailings if an amended backfill product made up of 100% of flotation tailings could be introduced. A 100% tailings backfill with the addition of 8% cement was developed by classifying the tailings and using the coarser fraction in the backfill. This backfill allowed 60% of the flotation tailings to be placed underground and only the remaining 40% in the flotation TSF. A new thickener was designed and installed to thicken the tailings and rheological testing of the tailings, using a closed loop pilot plant, provided parameters to upgrade the underground reticulation system to deliver cemented backfill to stopes throughout the mine and to deliver thickened tailings to the TSF. Reducing metal prices have forced mining operations to become more efficient and innovate in order to do more with the existing base. Much of this effort has focused on improving the efficiency of load and haul operations. The key to this is to understand and quantify where delays and missed opportunities exist. Metrics such as utilisation of availability, efficiency utilisation and asset availability are helpful indicators of performance; however, uptime-based time usage models and performance analysis tools using productive operating time models help to identify additional improvement opportunities.Phu Kham is a copper-gold mine operated in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Laos) since 2008 by PanAust Limited. The mine is a single large open pit of 450 m depth, running a fleet of 51 100 t class rigid dump trucks and 300 t and 200 t shovels controlled with the aid of a fleet management system in order to achieve ex-pit material movements of 56 Mt/a.Commencing in late 2014, a range of initiatives were implemented in order to improve the efficiency of the mine haulage fleet. These include hot seating of all operator changeouts via changeout ramps, split shifting of crews to minimise queuing delays, maximising blast volumes and minimising blast event days to reduce blast exclusion delay events including opportune refuelling of equipment during blasting events, inspections of trucks during refuelling events, implementation of a dedicated haul road services team to help reduce wet weather related delays and infrastructure development for haul path efficiency improvements.These and other initiatives have allowed the mine haulage fleet utilisation of availability (UofA) to be sustainably increased from 85 per cent to 97 per cent (see Figure&#160;1), efficiency utilisation to increase from 85 per cent to 90 per cent, and productive operating time (POT) to increase from 73 per cent to 84 per cent. A tube bundle system (TBS) is a mechanical system for continuously drawing gas samples through tubes from multiple monitoring points located in an underground coal mine. The gas samples are drawn via vacuum pump to the surface and are typically analyzed for oxygen, methane, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide. Results of the gas analyses are displayed and recorded for further analysis. Trends in the composition of the mine atmosphere, such as increasing methane or carbon monoxide concentration, can be detected early, permitting rapid intervention that prevents problems, such as a potentially explosive atmosphere behind seals, fie or spontaneous combustion. TBS is a well-developed technology and has been used in coal mines around the world for more than 50 years. most longwall coal mines in australia deploy a TBS, usually with 30 to 40 monitoring points as part of their atmospheric monitoring. The primary uses of a TBS are detecting spontaneous combustion and maintaining sealed areas inert. The TBS might also provide mine atmosphere gas composition data after a catastrophe occurs in an underground mine, if the sampling tubes are not damaged. TBSs are not an alternative to statutory gas and ventilation airflowmonitoring by electronic sensors or people; rather, they are an option to consider in an overall mine atmosphere monitoring strategy. This paper describes the hardware, software and operation of a TBS and presents one example of typical data from a longwall coal mine.

In October 2017, a multi-bench failure occurred in the east wall of the Guelb Moghrein copper and gold mine in Mauritania. The failure extended 100 m (328 ft) vertically and horizontally and resulted in the sterilisation of ore, but no equipment or personnel were put in danger. The remediation plan successfully removed the failed material and the cutback resumed to a modified pit design, leaving ore reserves behind. In 2021 after completion of mining in another part of the pit, a plan was formulated to develop a narrow cutback behind the failed wall and recover the sterilised ore. Infill drilling defined a resource of approximately 2.9 Mtonne (3.2 Mton) of ore at 0.78% Cu and 0.67 g/t Au at a strip ratio of 5.5:1. The high strip ratio meant that it was necessary to mine thirteen benches of waste, or 156 m (512 ft) vertically, over a two-year period before reaching the first ore, with the cutback only being economically viable if all ore could be depleted at the end of the third year. The high economic risk of the project required a holistic approach to mitigate the risk of another wall failure, by addressing the following areas: 1. Pit Design: with help from an external Geotechnical Consultant, the pit design was optimised to include increased factors of safety, reduced stress points, lower overall slope angles and straight lined walls were replaced with curved walls. 2. Geotechnical Management: the site Geotechnical Superintendent worked closely with an external Geotechnical Consultant to better understand the structural geology. Slope monitoring was improved through an expanded network of prisms, regular in field inspections and the use of a slope monitoring radar. 3. Drill and Blast: new drill and blast designs were developed from first principles, consisting of production, wall control and presplit designs. Blast master polygons and bench development sequences were developed with consideration of the structural geology and the influence of the initiation designs. 4. Mine Operations: improving operational discipline was a critical factor that ensured the accurate execution of drill and blast designs and excavation to bench levels and pit limits. This holistic approach has enabled the safe development of the cutback down to the 936 RL (relative level), two benches below the point at which the previous wall failure occurred. Extraction of ore has occurred from the 960 RL, and due to faster than planned excavation rates, the cutback is expected to be completed ahead of schedule.
