Sistemas de blindagens multicamada têm sido estudadas pela sua ótima capacidade de proteção, devido à combinação de diferentes materiais que constituem seus componentes. A primeira camada é constituída por um componente cerâmico, cujo objetivo principal é fragmentar o projétil, dissipando grande parte de sua energia. A camada intermediária compreende tecido de aramida ou matriz polimérica com fibras naturais, que também dissipa energia tanto do projétil quanto do cerâmico e opera retendo os fragmentos cerâmicos. Neste trabalho, pela primeira vez, o sistema cerâmico Al2O3-Nb2O5-LiF tem seu comportamento dinâmico avaliado balisticamente. Este composto cerâmico foi submetido a impactos balísticos de projéteis 7,62 mm, para testar este cerâmico do primeiro componente de um sistema de blindagens multicamadas. Os resultados obtidos mostraram que a adição de LiF ao composto cerâmico Al2O3-4%p. Nb2O5, sinterizado a 1.300 ºC, obteve desempenho comparável ao obtido por Al2O3-4%p. Nb2O5 sem LiF, sinterizado a 1.400 ºC. Os resultados revelaram que, ao serem submetidos a esses impactos balísticos, apresentaram valores comparáveis aos esperados de pressão e de velocidade de partícula na interface de impacto projétil-cerâmico. Dessa forma, a adição de fluoreto de lítio ao composto cerâmico alumina-nióbia possibilitou a redução em 100 ºC na temperatura de sinterização, sem comprometer o desempenho balístico e exibindo parâmetros de choque comparáveis, e redução de custo.

IN the middle of the eighteenth century John Frazier and wife, Sarah Ingraham, removed from Boston, Mass., to Philadelphia, Pa., where he was held in such esteem that we find him one of the Committee which arranged the ball at Washington's inauguration. Their son John. Nalbro Frazier, was prosperous in his mercantile career and fortunate in his wife, .Anne West; who was an important personage in the early life of Professor Frazier. This cultured lady brought into the family an atmosphere of religious enthusiasm, of thoroughness and: of unity of purpose. Her son, Benjamin West Frazier, inherited her traits and displayed them during a. short and active life. Like his father, he engaged in mercantile pursuits, and was a member of the firm of Zimmerman, Frazier & Co. In their interests he lived for a short- time in Montevideo, and on his return married Isabella Zimmerman, a daughter of the head of the firm. Their happy married life was cut short by the death of Mrs. Frazier shortly after the birth of the subject of this sketch which, occurred October 3, 1841. Mr. Frazier did not long survive her, and left his orphaned sons to, the care of his mother, from whom he had inherited a lovable and deeply religious nature, an : artistic temperament and a capacity for thorough work. Whatever of these traits fell by inheritance to these children were strengthened by the influence of their grandmother, and. the purity of mind, the delicacy of sentiment, the refinement of honor, which characterized. Professor Frazier, are due to Anne West Frazier, and are generally present in the characters of all of gentle blood who have been under the sole and immediate influence of a mature and refined woman. A consumable-electrode arc-melting furnace was constructed at the Bureau of Mines Physical Metallurgy Laboratory, College Park, Md., for the production of uncontaminated titanium and titanium-alloy ingots. The furnace was designed to allow for evacuating to very low pressures and back filling with helium and argon mixtures for melting at or near atmospheric pressure. Vacuum melting at a few millimeters pressure was also used with a mixture of helium and argon gas sweeping the crucible. For research purposes a 25- to 30-pound ingot, 4 inches in diameter by 15 inches in length, was selected to provide, enough 1/2-inch plate for extensive tensile and impact testing of standard size specimens. Enough plate was also provided for testing by other Government laboratories. The homogeneity of several alloy ingots was determined, and excellent results were obtained. By using a large electrode-to-ingot-area ratio and high currents or power inputs to the arc furnace rather uniform ingots were routinely prepared.

Moatize Coal Mine is located in Tete Province, in centre of Mozambique. The deposit contains Gondwana allochthonous coals, and has a large amount of mudstone and siltstone banding. Phosphorus levels in the coal can be high which impacts the use of the coals in steel making where phosphorus is considered a contaminant. The Chipanga seam in the Moatize deposit shows considerable variability, vertically within the seam and laterally across the deposit. The data available from the exploration work indicates that the phosphorus is predominantly present as Apatite but the Crandallite minerals also are significant. The concentration of phosphorus varies with coal particle density with the highest phosphorus levels found for the mid density coal which also shows the highest likely levels of apatite or fluorapatite. Crandallite minerals show higher potential concentrations in the Lower density coal..

As a result of Synopsis 73-16 Dynadyne responded with an unsolicited proposal offering the Bureau of Mines to develop an ultra-low volume coal mine dust personal sampler. In the ensuing technical discussions the choice of a desirable volumetric rate became a focal point. While, the initial proposal was based on a volumetric rate in the area of 50 cc/min the Government expressed interest in a variety of mass flow rates ranging from 50 cc/min to 2000 cc/min. The physical characteristics such as weight, volume and configuration of a personal sampler are to a large extent - dependent on the operating volumetric rate. It became readily apparent that the optimum size of such an instrument as a function of volumetric rate was not known and that a study of the choice of optima was essential prior to beginning the development, Hence, the Government authorized a two phase approach to this project. Phase I was to include a Technical Evaluation Study of optimum characteristics in the range between 0. 1 to 2. 0 lpm. Based on these findings and in consultation with MESA personnel, the Bureau of Mines was to authorize the second phase that is, the development. Phase II, was to include the drawing of a set of performance specifications stating among others the desired operating volumetric rate. In this report, every effort was made not only to present the actual work done over the course of this development, but to reflect also our engineering "thinking" providing answers as to the "why" we preferred certain solutions over others. We believe that this added dimension is not only useful for the Government official evaluating this report, but also that the Government is entitled to it providing the official with an educational content useful in avoiding future costly repetitions of similar situations.

"In 2006, a Canadian steel maker embarked on an ambitious initiative to become “Best in Class in Energy Management”. This initiative provides the framework for this paper, with some augmentation from other energy management projects carried out by Hatch. The initiative focused on identifying energy/GHG management improvements leading to low-cost implementation of energy savings or GHG emission reduction. The key components of the approach were:• Review site energy management practices and benchmark internationally.• Review best technical practices and benchmark against public energy intensity data.• Conducted a site-wide Energy Assessment and physical review of operating areas.• Facilitation of on site-workshops with staff to prioritize savings opportunities, as well as identify and remove implementation barriers.• Development of an Energy Management Action Plan for implementation of improvements.Most organizations can produce, with relative ease, a list of ideas for saving energy, implementing them is the challenge. This paper addresses these issues as well as the profitability of the energy efficiency improvements and the consequences for GHG emissions.IntroductionWhen one of the authors was an undergraduate engineering student at the University of Cape Town in South Africa, the technical drawing instructor made a statement that was both humorous, and mildly profound. He claimed that the most successful engineer is one who is both lazy and diligent. Lazy, in the sense that the engineer is constantly on the lookout for an easier, more efficient, way to do something. Diligent, in the sense that the engineer will work tirelessly to come up with a good technical solution for the easier way. This paper, somewhat of an anomaly in a compilation of technical proceedings, hopes to break the mould a little, and to show a “lazy-diligent” way of reducing the carbon emissions from an industrial facility, using a steel plant as an example."

"Natural resource agencies, under various regulatory authorities, are challenged with permitting underwater explosive use while at the same time protecting aquatic resources. Deciding on whether or not to allow use of explosives requires striking a balance between development and aquatic resource protection. A company’s goal in underwater explosive use is to select methods that are both expedient and cost effective. The use of explosives is often the best alternative for engineering reasons or economic considerations. Over and above legal requirements, indiscriminate destructionof fish and other aquatic resources is not in a company’s best interests because of concerns relatingto public image, as well as the need to secure future contracts."

Cyanide is used by the mining and chemical industries in tremendous quantities without attention being given to its hazardous properties. The use of cyanide compounds in mining is one of the most important environmental issues for the mining industry due to the acutely toxic properties of many cyanide compounds to humans and aquatic life. Cyanide tends to react readily with most other chemical elements, producing a wide variety of toxic, cyanide-related compounds and because cyanide is carbon based an organic compound it reacts readily with other carbon-based matter, including living organisms. This research is aimed at investigating a feasible and economical technique for the removal of cyanide from tailing wastewater of Muteh gold mine. In this research, removal from Muteh factory's waste water, was achieved at Tarbiat Modares University's mineral processing laboratory through the oxidation of cyanide by calcium hypochlorite. Cyanide oxidizes and changes to cyanide (CNO-) which is 1000 times less environmentally hazards than cyanide. Cyanide titration was accomplished using Rhodanine solution and silver Nitrate. Cyanide concentration in the wastewater, was 270 mg/L. Cyanide removal was achieved at an optimum pH of 12.3. However, at higher temperatures, cyanide removal was complete at this pH level. Optimum Dosage for complete removal of cyanide using calcium hypochlorite was 1.43g/L.

This paper provides updates to the paper published by the lead author at RETC 2011 with a summary of developments in technologies, products, and approaches to corrosion analyses of gravity sewer tunnels and microtunnels. This paper presents approaches in evaluating degradation of reinforced concrete liners. Also, the carbon footprint of conventional concrete liners and alternative “green” liners are compared and their life cycle costs are considered. A few case histories from the past decade are provided indicating the latest and emerging trends in liner protection.

Building off the enthusiasm generated by Credit Suisse First Boston on the potential benefits of an industry-wide effort to market gold jewellery, a group of gold producers, led by Randall Oliphant, CEO of Barrick Gold, decides to investigate the long -term impact of launching a significant marketing initiative to stimulate demand for gold jewellery. The group establishes an international Steering Committee representing producers of differing sizes, members and non-members of the World Gold Council. This Committee comprises representatives from AngloGold, Barrick, Gympie Gold, Kinross, Randgold, and Sons of Gwalia and is supported by the Australian Gold Council, the Gold and Silver Institute, and CSFB. The Steering Committee hires McKinsey to assist it by conducting an independent review of whether investment in a large-scale marketing initiative for gold jewellery would be effective in increasing demand for gold, and ultimately of significant economic benefit of the gold industry. Based on McKinsey?s review* and its own discussions with key stakeholders across the industry, the Steering Committee strongly believes the case for marketing is compelling and sufficiently proven to persuade the industry to undertake a major initiative over the next few years. Os fabricantes de instrumentos endodônticos de NiTi têm desenvolvido diferentes estratégias para aumentar a resistência à fadiga e à ruptura torcional desses instrumentos. A tecnologia “Controlled Memory (CM)”, que envolve o emprego de tratamentos térmicos em instrumentos já usinados, é uma dessas novas estratégias. Neste trabalho, dois tipos de instrumentos CM foram avaliados em termos de sua capacidade de recuperação de forma e resistência à fadiga após ciclos de flexão até 45 graus e esterilização em autoclave, simulando o uso clínico. Os resultados obtidos em relação às temperaturas de transformação martensítica e reversa, ao momento de dobramento a 45 graus, à recuperação de forma e à resistência à fadiga após ciclos de flexão/esterilização mostraram que os tratamentos aplicados aos dois tipos de instrumentos, embora referenciados como tecnologia CM, produziram resultados diferentes em termos de microestrutura e propriedades.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a comprehensive laboratory study of the thermal ignitability of various carbonaceous dust clouds with particular emphasis on various ranks of coal dust. The tests were conducted using a new 1.2-L furnace. Autoignition temperatures of dust clouds were obtained as a function of coal volatility and particle size. Dust particles and gas samples were collected by a rapid-sampling system in order to study the reactions involved in preignition and postignition processes. The autoignition temperatures measured in the new 1.2-L furnace were significantly lower and therefore more conservative than those measured previously in the Godbert-Greenwald furnace. The combined effects of thermal and electrical ignition of dust clouds were also studied in the 1.2-L furnace using electrical discharges of varying energies at ambient and elevated temperatures. The minimum spark energy necessary to ignite a dust cloud decreased significantly as the temperature of the dust cloud increased.

This Bureau of Mines report is an expansion and update of Information Circular 8719 and comprises maps and tables listing the name, location, and other pertinent data concerning certain fuel-related projects. The maps show the locations of the planned or proposed facilities. The tables include information on projects involving the proposed or planned development of fuel resources, as well as the development of storage, transportation, and conversion facilities. The report covers the 24 States west of the Mississippi River including Alaska and Hawaii. Of the 808 projects for which information is provided, 219 concern coal mines, 246 concern electric generating plants, and 115 concern uranium mines; Energy Supply and Environmental Coordination Act coal conversion notices are also included. Because of the dynamic nature of the energy industry, many uncertainties exist and some of the listed projects may never become realities. Also, no attempt has been made to determine the degree of certainty or viability of each project.

Until well into the 20th century, most construction work was performed under the auspices of a master builder or in a manner that would be described today as design-build. In addition, many civil engineers served as ?interns? under the tutelage of a master builder in order to learn how to design and construct a certain type of structure. This was certainly the case for tunneling projects with various individuals having been identified as tunneling experts as a result of successfully completed projects The master builder approach began to change in the early 1900s to a model that would be referred to today as design-bid-build. A design-bid-build approach to project procurement gives the owner more control over the final product and al-lows the contractor to know exactly what is expected of them before the work is constructed. As a result of this transition in project procurement, civil engineering schools placed a greater emphasis on the training of ?design? professionals. This article will document how the training of tunnel design professionals progressed within the United States. Although it is difficult to generalize about the hundreds of tunnels that were constructed in the first four decades of the 20th century, there is one project that stands out as having resulted in a university program related directly to tunneling and that is the Chicago Subway. During a visit to the United States in 1938, Dr. Karl Terzaghi met a student named Ralph Peck who was then studying at Harvard University in a pro-gram established by Arthur Casagrande. Shortly thereafter, Terzaghi traveled to Chicago for a lecture and was asked to consult on the Chicago subway project that was then under construction. The Chicago subway was being constructed in clay, and the owners were worried about possible settlements to nearby buildings. Terzaghi asked Peck to serve as his field engineer for that project. Thus was established one of the most productive relationships in the history of civil engineering in the United States. Peck, who would become Dr. Peck, moved to Chicago in 1939 to participate in an extensive research project that con-tinued until subway construction was halted in 1941 because of World War II. During that time, the cost of subway construction in Chicago was reduced substantially as a result of Peck?s observations and Terzaghi?s recommendations. In fact, it was reported that subway construction in Chicago cost less than one-half of similar projects in London even though the clay in London is considerably stiffer compared to Chicago. Upon the completion of his work on the Chicago Subway, Peck accepted a professorship with the University of Illinois in Champaign/Urbana.

In June 1972, when the United Nations convened its historic Conference on the Human Environment, only 24 countries had established government agencies with environmental responsibilities. Of these, 11 were in the industrialized world, 13 in the Third World. By 1985, the number had dramatically surged to a world-wide total of 145, with the greatest growth among the developing countries to 110, an increase of almost 1000%.
