"The mining industry is often challenged with the task of evaluating narrow vein open pit deposits. A realistic mineable solution from optimisation needs to accurately represent mining dilution and the practical limitations of mining equipment. Open pit dilution is driven according to mining method and fleet selection as this dictates the ‘selective mining unit’ (SMU) that can be practicably mined.Common evaluation methods represent dilution by:a mathematical dilution assumption addition of a dilution skin reblocking of the model to an appropriate SMU.This paper will explore an alternative method of applying dilution by adapting an underground stope modelling tool. By considering an SMU as a stope, automatic stope shape creators such as Datamine’s Mineable Shape Optimiser (MSO) can be used to create wireframes for each mining unit over the entire deposit. Using these wireframes, the model can be subblocked and assigned as either ore (inside the wireframe) or waste (outside the wireframe) prior to optimisation.The MSO process considers SMU geometry and a depth specific value-based cut-off. The result is an optimised solution for the deposit based on practical and achievable mining constraints rather than one based on generalised modifying factors.To evaluate the economic impact of the methods above, results have been costed and scheduled and a comparison of operating cash flows made.Citation:Swapp, S and Mann, C, 2016. Efficient pre-concentration using natural and induced deportment starts with effective blast design. Leveraging these characteristics using Size-Based Grade Engineering® techniques requires detailed understanding and measurement of the particle size distribution (PSD) of the Run of Mine (ROM) ore. In turn, blasts must be designed to optimise fragmentation for the pre-concentration method. To be successful, fragmentation outcomes must be predicted and measured as part of the blast design process to account for the response ranking of the rock mass. The upgrade achieved using Size-Based Grade Engineering® methodologies will rely on the proportion of feed that reports to the screen undersize, so particle size distribution of the feed stock is of paramount importance if the potential benefits are to be achieved and maintained. Measuring actual fragmentation in the ROM ore and comparing with predictions allows the modification of subsequent blast designs to optimise fragmentation for pre-concentration scenarios. Automating this process can deliver significant increases in productivity and mine site profits. This paper discusses the importance fragmentation plays in Size-Based Grade Engineering® and explores technologies and methodologies used to measure it, consistently ensuring the best outcomes.

Geologic investigation of a mineralized zone in eastern Alabama indicates that large quantities of talc and soapstone are scattered over a wide area close to the surface. Laboratory experiments show that this material may be upgraded to a high-quality talc. A market survey indicates that the talc deposits may be of current and long-range interest. The anthophyllite asbestos which is associated with the talc does not appear to occur in sufficient quantities to be considered as a primary commercial source.

You have been involved with research activities in froth flotation and size reduction. What do you think the future holds for these technologies? Froth flotation and size reduction are essential processing steps common to almost all current mineral-processing operations. The most significant recent advances in both of these technologies have been in the increased size of equipment and in some alternative machine designs, such as the column cells and the high-pressure roller mills. I believe that the next major area of improvement in size reduction will be at least partially driven by an improved awareness of controlling the conditions that influence the efficiency of particle breakage. This would include factors such as water-chemistry influences, the influence of fines from classification, chemical grinding additives and better rheology control. In froth flotation, significant changes are currently taking place in the plant use of frothers. Also, there will be an increasing number of new collector chemistries for certain types of flotation, such as with oxide minerals, oxidized mineral recovery in sulfide systems and improved selectivity with certain sulfide mineral systems. You have been active in implementing new engineering technology in industry. What do you think will be the technological future of mineral processing? Being involved in the invention and industrial implementation of new technology has been one of the most positive experiences of my career. I also have had the unique experience of working in the chemical and petroleum industries as well as in mineral processing. In my opinion, the future of mineral processing will be an exciting, wonderful work area in which to be involved. The development of new technology in minerals processing offers a special challenge compared, for example, to that of chemistry or chemical engineering. In successful industrial innovation involving minerals, having a sound theory is not enough. Instead, what is required is a valid blend of a good idea, meaningful laboratory characterization and, most key, the experience necessary to adjust the plant in such a way to incorporate the idea. The complexity of engineering systems that contain solids, liquids and gases, as well as highly variable natural mineral properties, means that nothing new comes easily. In some cases, it has been difficult to explain how processes practiced in industry for decades actually work, in terms of physical and chemical fundamentals. On the other hand, when a new idea is successfully implemented, the economic and professional returns can be very rewarding. I know of no more challenging field of engineering than minerals processing. What is your view of the future of the minerals industry in general? The need for minerals, metals and coal will be with us for decades to come. In many aspects, the minerals industry became global much earlier than some of the other industrial sectors that are currently experiencing globalization. I believe that fair international competition is beneficial to the users of minerals, metals and coals and to those involved in producing such materials. The key word here for a global economy to work is "fair." So the various playing fields involved such as finance, profit return, regulation and labor should be relatively level for all the players involved. Competition is an amazing driving force for innovation. This has been true in the minerals industry during the last few decades. The mining industry is producing more at less cost per unit than ever before in our history. I anticipate that this trend will continue as long as the global political situation remains relatively stable.

The principal sources of coal-dust underground are, of course, coal, and the working of coal. Coal-dust is most dangerous when it is in the finest state of division. This class of dust is found mostly on the roads, being blown or shaken off the loaded trams in transit, or carried in suspension by air currents. The air current passing from the working faces may also carry dust in suspension into the return airway, and the air current from the surface may carry dust from the shakerscreens into the intake airways. The mosl dangerous dust we have to contend with is, (a) that which is most finely divided, and (b) that which contains the most volatile matter, including the inflammable occluded gases, and also oxygen absorbed from the air. According to experiments, coal-dust in a fine and dry state would intensify an explosion, in air free from fire-damp carrying in excess of 3 ozs. of fine dust or 6 ozs. of coarse dust per cubic yard. The volatile matter in the dust must be between 12 and 31 per cent. in the ash-free coal, the latter percentage giving the highest flame velocity. It is vary difficult to propagate flame where coal-dust contains a large percentage of stone-dust, (say 50 per cent.). Shale-dust or other incombustible dust containing no volatile hydro-carbons or carbonaceous matter will prevent the extension of an explosion if mixed with coal-dust in proportion of say 70 per cent., and if the dust is finely divided and dry.

The conventional method of underground mining involves a process known as drilling and blasting to excavate valuable ore bearing minerals through the load and haul process. Drilling and blasting processes are completed for both the development of the tunnels used to access the orebody and for mining out the orebody itself. The former being called development drilling and blasting, and the latter production drilling and blasting. In either development or production drilling and blasting, the effective recovery will be largely reliant on the extraction of the initial void created in each blast cycle. In development tunnelling, the initial void is commonly known as a Burn Cut. The initial void created in production drilling and blasting has many names such as a Slot, Winze, Rise or Raise. There are drill patterns and charge designs used to create these initial voids in the production cycle. This paper discusses common slot or winze designs for production drilling and blasting; and various critical design criteria for these. The document also aims to provide a process for completing desktop reviews of current patterns employed on-sites and provides an initial guide in a process for improving the recovery of a slot, winze, rise or raise in underground mines.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a series of laboratory experiments to test a cutting technique for hard rock using large-scale drag cutters. Cutting experiments were performed on rocks ranging in compressive strength from 10,000 to 27,000 Ib/in2, using large drag cutters from 3 to 6 in. in width. The tests were conducted on a special test apparatus, called a ripper tester, which made a curvilinear cut across the rock sample while measuring the cutting force acting on the drag cutter. The cutting method that evolved from these experiments is called ripper cutting, and its energy efficiency appears superior to all other large-scale mechanical fragmentation techniques. In addition, the method cre-ated very little dust, and the wear on the bits was negligible. A fragmentation system based on ripper cutting was then devised, and a large-scale test device was fabricated to allow full-scale laboratory testing of the system. The results of these tests will be published in future Bureau reports.

In the older countries, where the disproportion between capital and labor is greater, and the working classes are more dependent, their welfare largely occupies the attention of employers. The subject is involved in the problem of the just relations of capital and labor, and we are rapidly approaching the time, if we have not already reached it, when a generous paternal interest in the welfare of the employed should be more generally manifested. It is a subject which is of special importance to mine-owners and engineers in this country, especially to those located in the coal regions. My own attention has been particularly directed to it by a visit made to the Hassard collieries, a few miles from Liege, Belgium, under the direction of M. Andrimont. This celebrated engineer has established a comfortable home for the miners near the mouth of the shaft of the mine. It has been highly successful and beneficent in its results, and may to a great degree be regarded as a, model for such undertakings. It is known as "Hotel Louise," this being the name of Madame d'Andrimont, who laid the corner-stone of the building April 4th, 1871. The structure is of brick, upon three sides of a square, and

Anglo American has been researching the potential benefits of inter-particle comminution techniques for several years. Inter-particle comminution has additional benefits in terms of milling circuit performance such as energy consumption and stability. This paper focuses on the flotation benefits. Inter-particle comminution leads to selective breakage, mineralogical analysis has shown that this leads to improved liberation of the valuable minerals. In addition to selective breakage, the relatively short residence time experienced in typical inter-particle comminution machines allows more efficient classification which contributes to a æsharperÆ product size distribution. The effect of particle size in flotation has been well documented in literature. In general, it is has been shown that there is an optimal particle size range for flotation, and that both above and below this range, flotation recovery is adversely affected. Results show that the narrow size distribution which results from inter-particle comminution improves flotation recovery. Furthermore, the absence of excessive fine gangue material which typically results from conventional fine (-75 ¦m) milling of talcaceous ores, can lead to 100 per cent savings in depressant consumption when such ores are subjected to inter-particle comminution. To-date, this technology has been evaluated on more than ten ores. This paper will focus on one set of results which demonstrates a number of common differences that exist between material that has been milled conventionally and using inter-particle comminution technologies, with emphasis on what the impact of these differences is on flotation performance. A pilot scale (200 kg/h) vertical roller mill (VRM) was used to produce the material, and the results shown will describe conventional laboratory batch, locked cycle and pilot plant flotation testwork.

Core drilling is a fundamental process in the mineral exploration industry. As deep exploration in hard rocks is accelerated due to the depletion of near ground mineral resources, deep-drilling operations need to reduce their reliance in operators experience and begin to implement new technologies in order to increase efficiency and cost-effectiveness of the overall process. Currently, lack of real-time information on the bit/rock interaction is a major problem. Therefore the mechanism behind the acoustic emission, which is a proven technique for remote monitoring, generation in mechanical rock cutting must be understood in order to provide real time information about the rock. This paper aims to identify the influence of mineral composition of granitic rocks on the acoustic emission (AE) during rock abrasivity test with a single contact tool and to evaluate the feasibility of AE as a means to infer Cerchar Abrasivity Index (CAI). Single contact tool will provide precise and accurate description of the source of AE. To provide constant grooving speed Cerchar apparatus was modified to monitor AE during rock/tool interaction. Tests on the modified Cerchar apparatus are carried out under the static load of 70N and cutting speed of 1 mm/s. A Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) is utilized to visualize the groove in the rock and to identify the mineral composition through Back-Scattered Electrons (BSE) reflected from the rock sample. Based on the microscope images, it was found that biotite shows a larger groove area and plate-like fractures accompanied with burst-type AE signal, whereas plagioclase and quartz, which are characterized by similar hardness and BSE brightness, possess shattered-like fractures and more continuous-type AE signals. In addition, a-value of the Gutenberg-Richter scale has been found to well correlate with Cerchar Abrasivity Index (CAI).

The growing interest in beryllium as a structural material, and its in-creased use in recent years for atomic energy application, have led both government and industry to express concern over the inadequacy of the beryllium resources in the United States and the free world. Contemplated and proposed uses for this unique material will surpass the capacity of the domestic beryllium mining industry to supply raw material, which is presently extracted from relatively small deposits by hand sorting. The need for a simple beneficiation process for beryl ores has long been recognized by the Bureau of Mines, but to date no single process has proved satisfactory for treating deposits containing a sufficient tonnage of beryl ore to warrant commercial exploitation. As a part of the Bureau's continuing effort to develop an economical recovery process, this report describes flotation research on samples of beryl-bearing pegmatites from the George Roebling mine in Connecticut, and the Colony mine in New Hampshire. The study resulted in two methods of treatment to which the ores responded reasonably well.

Flooded-bed dust scrubbers installed on continuous miners use fibrous type multi-layered filters to capture dust from the airstream. Prolonged operations of the scrubber could lead to filter clogging due to dust accumulation. This results in reduced flow through the scrubber and elevated dust levels in the mine environment. This paper compares the performance of a conventional fibrous screen filter and a novel impingement type dust filter. The impingement filter is a self-cleaning system and was designed to have a resistance similar to the fibrous filter. The cleaning efficiencies for these filters were computed using iso-kinetic sampling and optical counting of coal dust particles in a clean unclogged state. The cleaning efficiency of the impingement filter also increased with an increase in particle size and was comparable with the conventional fibrous filter. The cleaning efficiency of the fibrous filter improved significantly with an increase in water flow. The non-clogging nature of the impingement filter and minimal maintenance requirement makes it an attractive alternative to the conventional fibrous type filter in mining applications. The research also proposes a term called ‘filter performance factor’ to compare the performance of different filters under similar operating conditions.

The foundation of effective leadership is communication. You can have all the leadership theories, models and training you want, but in the end it is all about leaders talking to, listening to and understanding the point of view of those below and above them.The foundation of effective safety is peoples’ behaviours. Every incident, every near miss and every safe act comes down to what one person does and how that affects themselves and others. We tend to focus these behavioural considerations on the people at the ‘coal face’, those most in harm’s way. But it is the individual behaviours of everyone in the organisation, particularly those at the top, which are just as (if not more) important. The foundation of effective safety leadership in the mining industry is that it starts at the top, with the individual behaviours of leaders. The behaviours of each and every leader will be reflected in their teams. And where their teams are made up of leaders, these leaders will pass these behaviours on to their teams and so on. It’s the sum total of what people see their leaders do and what they do as a result, that creates the ‘culture’ of the business – and it’s this culture that makes or breaks how safely people work.

?Intelligent mine? conjures up a futuristic image of unmanned extractors and loaders working in harsh conditions in a remote lunar landscape. The promise of increasing mine fleet productivity and solving the problem labor shortages in mining regions can certainly be achieved today through remote controlled extraction and automated hauling. The technology is available and it doesn?t seem to be so much science fiction when Google?s self-driving cars hurtle down the freeway. ?Intelligent mining,? on the other hand, implies the application of information technology at every phase of the mining value chain, from exploration and geological modeling to equipment, operations and maintenance, and logistics and transportation. These are really industry-specific, enterprise-class software solutions focused on using information technology to support the business processes of mining and make them more efficient and effective. Overlaying the physical world with the digital or virtual world enables us to model and simulate our assets, giving us the ability to effectively design, build, and ultimately optimize the performance and reliability of our assets throughout the lifecycle. The digital asset, often a 3D model, is created initially during the engineering and construction phase, and is handed over to the operator before the mine goes into operation. Combined with geospatial or geographic information systems, the operator has a complete digital representation of the physical world, which forms the foundation for risk and performance management, along with compliance and regulatory reporting. Laser scanning and positioning technology can be used to create point clouds ? information models consisting of millions of data points ? which enable the visualization and representation of the ?as-operated? reality. But consider that once the mine is in operation, it throws off an endless stream of data in the form of performance and condition data from sensors and monitoring devices on fixed and mobile assets through networks, servers, and services. This ?big data? can be processed and analyzed to spot trends, help predict events, and formulate reliability strategies as early as the design stage (e.g., reliability-centered design). ?Intelligent mining? implies that massive amounts of data augment the reality of the physical mine, plant, and equipment. This embedded intelligence can be used to optimize operational efficiency, increase asset availability and utilization, improve safety and environmental integrity, and maximize return on investment. Lastly, the sweet spot for intelligent mining is seen in the convergence of consumerization and industrialization. The application of ?consumer? technologies that we use every day on our iPhones and Android devices, such as cameras, motion sensors, and positioning in an industrial context, are producing ?immersive? experiences. Overlaying the digital world on the physical world and connecting them accurately through intelligent positioning results in ?intelligent infrastructure,? which is safer and more sustainable. In this scenario, the need to improve asset operational performance, makes complex studies involving technical knowledge and asset life behavior, become important tools to support companies strategic accomplish. These studies allow consider performance, costs and operational risks relationship in the decision make process. The Asset Management approach support these studies in order to observe the whole asset life cycle, understand value chain through all company process and optimize the asset economic life. In this context, the present technical work has the purpose to support asset management decision making regarding ArcelorMittal Vega cold rolling drive motors, through the motors fail behavior modelling and estimated the risks involved in asset management decision. Through the Reliability, Availability and Mantenability (RAM) analysis, simulations were performed considering the failure, repair cost data and investments to build options to mitigate the operational risks.

AT the Tooele custom lead-zinc ore concentrator,' two sections, each having a daily capacity of 500 to 600 tons, are operated on slightly different types of ores with but little difference in flow sheet and reagents. The ores comprising the two general classes are the coarsely crystalline type, with low pyrite and sphalerite low in iron content, from the Park City district, and the more finely disseminated higher pyrite ores from Bingham, which are more difficult to treat by flotation. Laboratory testing determines with which general class a new ore will work better. The ores are crushed to minus 1 1/4-in. size at either the Utah Ore Sampling Company's plant at Murray, Utah, the Tooele smelter sampling plant, or the crushing plant at the concentrator. The ores for each section are mixed to maintain as nearly as possible uniform lead and zinc contents.

For a project located in Docklands Victoria, a high-rise development was proposed where the geology comprised soils of various compositions and consistencies to approximately 50m deep before being underlain by a siltstone bedrock. Due to the structural loads and spatial constraints, the majority of the foundation piles were designed to be socketed into the siltstone. Key factors in selecting the Continuous Flight Auger (CFA) technique as an effective piling solution are explained. These factors included structural and geological considerations, piling rig capabilities, pile testing regime to verify load performance and integrity, the extensive suite of construction quality controls and instrumentation records required while also achieving an appropriate piling budget and program. This paper also described how these factors underpinned the design approach of the final piling scheme. Critical aspects considered during construction and post-construction quality and pile testing records required to meet and satisfy the strict project piling specifications are also presented. The project adopted what may be considered the “best practice” in deep CFA piling. To the author’s knowledge, this project achieved the record for the deepest CFA piles in Australia where multiple piles to 53.8m deep were constructed.
