"The ball mill performance relies on impact grinding, but it has disadvantage of the lower efficiency when the ore is finer; while tower mill relies on friction shear affection with high energy efficiency, which is considered to be one of the most potential fine grinding equipment all over the world. Generated by the agitator device, the internal media movement is complex because of comprehensive interaction of screw mechanism, cylinder structure and adjacent media, which is the key factor of grinding process. But the kinematics parameter ,such as speed, acceleration, stress and so on, of media motion cannot be obtained through traditional laboratory test method, which restricts deeply research on finer grinding mechanism seriously. In order to solve this problem, characteristics of media motion in tower mill is studied via the discrete element method. Coefficient of restitution, coefficient of static friction and coefficient of rolling friction are the key parameters affecting the media movement, which were calibrated by stacking angle test firstly. A 3kW tower mill is established as the model for simulation. At last one appropriate simulation strategy is selected to increase simulation accuracy. The characteristic of media motion is obtained based on the computer simulation analysis: macroscopically, the media in tower mill is a dynamic equilibrium state generally accompanied by spiral up and down movement all the time. And it has been found that the maximum lifting height is proportional to the rotation speed of agitator shaft. The velocity of media at the edge of screw stirrer is biggest, while the velocity of media near the cylinder wall is smaller, so the grinding performance between the two ring areas is the best. The rotational speed of agitator shaft and media filling ratio are the two most important operating parameters in tower mill. The impact curve of two main operating parameters on the grinding intensity and energy efficiency are obtained. All these can provide theoretical basis and technical support for operating parameters setting of industrial tower mill."

A review of blast designs and improved blasting practices at the Ekati??Diamond Mine is presented along with the results of three blast-monitoring experiments. Blast monitoring was undertaken to investigate blast damage mechanisms in the mine's well jointed rock mass. Rock mass damage caused by production, pre-shear and wall control blasts was measured. Ekati??uses 270mm holes for production blasting, and 165mm holes loaded with a decoupled charge for pre-shearing. The production blasts are loaded with bulk emulsion / ANFO blends. The mine plan involves using 30m double benches. A 30m high pre-shear is drilled and blasted prior to the production blasting that is done with sequential 15m benches. This paper summarizes the monitoring equipment and data gathered to date.

A large number of organizations interested in the search for mineral deposits have adopted the magnetic method of geophysical prospecting, as it has proved to be the most simple, convenient, and rapid, and at the same time the least expensive in comparison with other methods. According to the last statistical data, about two millions square kilo¬ meters were explored in the United States by different geophysical methods. Ninety-six per cent of this area was prospected for oil and 4 per cent for minerals. Detailed exploration by means of the magnetometer has been carried out over about 85 per cent of this surface. The great advantages offered by this method resulted in the fact that the magnetometer was tried out in most places in which geophysical methods were applied. The main purpose of such e:rploration is to obtain the maximum knowledge valuable to the geologist; therefore good geological interpretation of the results of measurements is important. The possibility of drawing practical conclusions from a map representing the results of the study of the terrane depends greatly on the accuracy with which the measurements are made. The purpose of this article is to show the different sources of error by which the work of an operator may be affected and to discuss the means by which the carrying out of a magnetic survey may be improved.

Geomembrane (GMB) liners are being used more frequently for the storage or capping of mine waste due to stricter regulatory requirements relating to environmental protection. The longevity of any liner system will be a function of environmental conditions, design (including materials selection), construction and condition monitoring during operations or closure. Based on experience and case studies, this paper presents a review, from design to handover, of some of the smaller and often overlooked details that can have significant impacts on the performance of the GMB and the project overall.The topics covered will include approaches to selecting and testing GMBs to ensure they are suitable. Previous testing was performed by researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to improve longwall dust control using underside shield sprays with a longwall directional spray system. This testing provided encouraging results toward respirable dust exposure reductions for longwall personnel, achieving as high as 99% dust reduction at some sampling locations along the longwall personnel walkway. Additional laboratory testing was conducted to test these underside shield sprays in conjunction with a shearer-clearer spray system located on the longwall shearer body. The purpose of this testing was to determine if the underside shield sprays interacted positively or negatively with the shearerclearer sprays. Results from this testing indicate that while the shearerclearer system influences where the respirable dust particles are directed, underside shield sprays can still lower respirable dust exposure for longwall personnel.

Magnetic methods have been used for more than three hundred years in prospecting for magnetic ores. More recently magnetic methods have been used for finding salt domes and studying certain geological formations. A number of instruments have been developed and substantial improvements made as to their sensitiveness and accuracy. Papers and articles written on magnetic methods are generally elaborate and technical, and the average prospector finds it difficult to obtain the necessary information as to how to operate the simple magnetic instruments to the best advantage. The miner's compass, dip needle, and inclinator are, indeed, very useful instruments and are easy to handle, and a great deal of valuable information can be gained if the instrument is properly operated and the results correctly interpreted. The lack of knowledge of the fundamental principles, however, has caused a great deal of disappointment. Other and more elaborate geophysical methods have recently come into the limelight, and the prospectors seem to have lost a great deal of interest in the dip needle. This is much to be regretted, because magnetic methods have a particular field of use. The present article is an attempt to help the prospector regain interest in the magnetic instruments and to show the use and application of a simple magnetic survey. If the prospector expects some useful help in his work, he must, of course, know the instrument, know how to take the readings, and know how to plot and interpret the observations.

High-angle in-pit conveying is an idea that is being seriously studied by a number of important mining companies in North America. Its application in coal, iron ore, and copper mining is expected to reduce mine operating costs considerably compared with the conventional discontinuous methods, such as truck haulage, which are fuel, labor, and maintenance intensive. Therefore, a mine introducing high-angle in-pit conveyors will gain a competitive advantage over mines which continue to use conventional haulage. While the capital outlay for in-pit conveyor systems obviously varies depending on pit depth, the angle of incline, and the capacity required, it generally will not exceed that of truck haulage when all Factors are taken into consideration. These factors include the cost of excavation, as measured in relation to the volume of minerals mined, the cost of building truck ramps and roads, and the capital outlay for the trucks and maintenance facilities. In many cases, in Fact, the capital outlay will be less than for truck haulage. This cost advantage will best be realized by new mines, whereas in existing producing mines the switch from truck haulage may involve the abandonment of a substantial capital asset.

"The study evaluated the impact on overall circuit metallurgy of improving the performance of the two flotation columns that make up the final Mo cleaning stage in the Cu/Mo separation circuit at Highland Valley Copper mine. The results showed that a key factor to improve the overall circuit metallurgy was to control the size of the bubbles generated in the columns. When a large proportion of small (< 1 mm) bubbles were generated, the production rate of solids-in-concentrate increased by a factor of 4-5 compared to typical production figures without compromising concentrate quality. This increase in concentrate production rate reduced the circulating load in the circuit causing a significant increase of Mo recovery. A statistical analysis of historical production data showed a strong relationship between final concentrate production rate and overall Mo recovery. This relationship along with the results from this study indicated an opportunity to increase the recovery of Mo from 90% (typical) to 94% without downgrading concentrate grade. This 4% increase represents about 14,000 lbs or $500,000 worth of Mo each month at current metal prices.To provide a rational interpretation of the results, this study also examined whether the model of Gorain et al. (1997; 1998; 1999) could explain the increase of Mo recovery seemingly resulting from the decrease of bubble size. The data showed that the model predictions did not agree with the experimental data, i.e., for a given change (decrease) of bubble size, the predictions underestimated significantly the observed recovery increase. An interpretation based on the fundamental analysis of Finch and Dobby (1990) and Hernandez-Aguilar et al. (2005) is proposed to explain the discrepancy between measurements and predictions obtained from Gorain et al.’s model.INTRODUCTIONIt is generally accepted that the size of the bubbles generated in a flotation cell – a concept usually referred to as “bubble size” – has a significant effect on metallurgical performance. However, a significant number of mineral processing practitioners often question, with valid reasons, the practical benefits of implementing process improvement strategies based on controlling bubble size. “Small” bubbles are often considered to be “favourable”, but how small they need to be for a particular case, or how to adjust operating conditions to control a target bubble size, or whether the bubbles need to be smaller in the first place are questions that usually remain unanswered. "The Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Limited, a government of India enterprise, has constructed iron ore mining, crushing, handling and concentrator facilities at Kudremukh, in southwest India. Concentrate produced is pumped 65 km to dewatering, storage and ship-loading facilities which were built at the same time at the sea port of Mangalore.A computer-based distributed process control system was implemented for all operations at Kudremukh and to interface with and monitor the Mangalore plant.The control system is examined from various standpoints, beginning with a description of its architecture, method of process input/output connection, and major hardware items.Software considerations and process applications are then looked at, with a review of the integration of the computer vendor&apos;s system software with user-developed applications programming. A control example of crusher operations is provided.Following the descriptive segment is a discussion of the design considerations and decision factors involved in the implementation of such a system considering the type of process and the remote nature of the installation site. Quality is much more than providing a product that functions properly. True quality is a way of thinking, a way of doing business, and, ultimately, a way of satisfying a customer?s long-term needs. A true commitment to quality requires a top-down management commitment, with a willingness to change what needs to be changed and to expand upon ?best practices? that are already done well. Is there a cost to creating and maintaining a quality program? Of course there is, but the cost of not having a focused program is much greater. We have come to regard quality as an investment that pays dividends to both the supplier and customer. The lack of quality costs everyone and the customer pays the ultimate penalty. With modern, highly engineered surface mining equipment the end user calculates cost in terms of lost production (revenue), not simply the cost of the part. This paper gives an overview of the ASHRAE LibHuAirProp, CoolProp and REFPROP software packages. These packages were predominantly developed for heating, refrigerating and air conditioning engineers and the refrigeration and steam power industries, although CoolProp and REFPROP also cover combustible gases. The main aim of this paper is to highlight the existence capabilities and status of the different packages and where they can be used. The paper gives typical examples of the use of these software packages, specifically as Excel add-ins, and provides a comparison of results of typical mine psychometric and gas drainage calculations using the packages and more traditional ventilation and gas drainage calculation methods. The paper also introduces a hybrid method that improves accuracy compared to traditional methods. In typical mine situations, the use of software packages is probably not required; however, with the increasing accuracy of instruments, potential greenhouse emission costs and the sale of mine gas, more accurate measurements and calculations can potentially save (or make) significant sums of money.CITATION:Harvey, T J M, 2015. THE system of pitwork used with the Cornish pumping engine, and which, for want of a better name, we may call the Cornish system of pitwork, consists essentially of a series of plunger-pumps, situated one below the other, in a shaft or incline, the plungers being operated by a rod called the pitman or pump-rod, which must, therefore, extend from the motor at the surface to the lowest pump. The subject will be best understood by reference to Fig. 1, in which k may be taken as typical of the ordinary plunger-pump, in which S is the suction pipe, u, the lower valve situated in the H piece T; v, the upper valve situated in the valve-box O; I, the mounting-pipe or column through which the water is carried to the surface; L, the plunger-barrel, and P, the plunger working through the stuffing-box, and actuated by the branch rod r, which is attached to the main pump-rod, R. The action of the pump is as follows : On the ascent of the plunger, acting now by suction, the water flows from the reservoir through the valve u, into the barrel, L. On the descent of the plunger, the water is forced up through the valve, v, which acts merely as a check valve, into the pipe, I, through which it is, at each successive down-stroke of the plunger, forced upward until it reaches the next reservoir, from which it is taken by another similar pump, and so on until it reaches the surface or drain-tunnel. The pump is obviously only single-acting, i. e., it acts only during one-half of its entire stroke. The weight of water raised during the up-stroke of the plunger is equal to the weight of a column of water whose base is the area of the plunger and whose height is the mean distance between the plunger-face and the surface of water in the lower reservoir, a distance not usually exceeding 12 or 15 feet, and which obviously cannot under the most favorable circumstances, exceed 25 or 30 feet. "FLEX 31 is a chemically enhanced sodium isopropyl xanthate. Developed by Charles Tennant & Co (Canada) Ltd and has shown improved collection properties over SIPX for sulphide minerals flotation. Improvement of recoveries, grades, faster kinetics, lower dosages, high pyrite and pyrrhotite rejection capabilities have all been exhibited by FLEX 31. Recent plant trial carried out in the copper circuit at one of the largest copper mine in Zambia shown over US $ 2.00 Million annual improvement on the bottom line over SIPX at current copper prices. Data produced also showed superior grade and recoveries from rougher concentrates that previously had not been attainable with other reagents effectively. Flex 31 has also shown positive outcomes with zinc, Copper/Zinc, arsenopyrite and copper/molybdenum ores.IntroductionSodium Isopropyl Xanthate (SIPX) is one of the most popular flotation chemicals on the market today. Somewhat more specific than amyl xanthate, SIPX is used in a variety of ores like copper/zinc, lead/zinc, arsenopyrite/pyrite, and many others (Melis et al., 1991). An investigation carried out by the research division of Charles Tennant & Company (Canada) Limited has produced a chemically enhanced SIPX. This product has shown all the advantages of normal SIPX along with improved recoveries of copper and copper activated minerals. The product was named “FLEX 31”."

"The carbon-in-pulp process has been used extensively in the gold industry since the late 1970s to recovery leached gold from solution. Despite more than 30 years of experience in operating carbon circuits, average gold solution loss has remained at an average of 0.02–0.03 ppm (mg/L), higher than the ‘best practice’ target of 0.01 ppm.Process modelling, such as SIMCIL developed by the Curtin Gold Technology Group (GTG), can provide information on optimum set points; however, manual control of the circuit limits the potential benefits.An automated carbon measurement device, the Scout Carbon Meter, has been developed to allow for automation of carbon concentration measurement, and automated control of the carbon transfer pumps. Four methods of measuring mineral abundance in a rock are examined for their potential in assaying for high-tech industrial minerals. One method uses X-ray powder-diffraction data and the other three rely on whole rock chemical data and information on mineral assemblages and mineral compositions. All four methods were employed to estimate wollastonite content in diamond drill core of skarn collected as part of an exploration program and are compared to visual estimates of wollastonite content from core logs. These techniques for assaying wollastonite span a considerable range ofaccuracy and expense, and combined, define a non-linear relationship between these variables. Accuracy increases rapidly relative lo expense up to total costs of about $50 per analysis. Assay methods in the $50-100 per analysis range have associated errors of 5-10% relative and probably suffice for most exploration programs. Improvements in accuracy above this level require a much larger investment. The most expensive assay technique (-$300 per analysis) yields the most accurate measurement of grade (relative error -1%). Its application may best be limited to periodic checks on other assay techniques and for fine-tuning ofmineral separation procedures.

Ten composite samples of Mesabi Range nonmagnetic taconite from the Hibbing, Minn., area were evaluated by flotation and by reduction roasting-magnetic separation to determine their potential as a future source of iron are. Only one of the composites yielded concentrates that could be considered marketable, using as a criterion a 10-to-1 iron-to-silica ratio. Cursory petrographic examinations of all 10 composited samples and a detailed mineralogical study on 1 sample suggest that unfavorable mineralogical associations between iron and gangue minerals are responsible for their poor beneficiation characteristics.

In the mining industry, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling is used extensively to simulate air flow in underground mines. CFD modeling of pollutant transport in openpit mines is relatively new. Modeling the actual pit geometry of an openpit mine and the open domain is complex. The complexity is primarily due to the faceted geometry of an openpit mine with its numerous associated sharp features. Important issues that are not considered carefully at the geometry level are generally propagated to the subsequent processes. Several challenges and pitfalls are encountered in modeling pollutant transport in openpit mines. These challenges and pitfalls are related to the geometry, meshing, boundary conditions and turbulence modeling parameterization. An appropriate mesh selection is critical. A detailed discussion of the meshing of the domain of an openpit mine is presented in this paper. The selection of an appropriate turbulence model, such as kappa-epsilon (κ-ε), large eddy simulation (LES), Reynolds stress model (RSM), etc., to obtain the best possible solution is equally significant. This paper discusses the various challenges in modeling the pollutant transport process in an openpit and some of the approaches adopted to address these challenges.

The Swiss are currently building the world’s longest tunnel, the 35-mile long Gotthard Base Tunnel. At Sedrun, for the first time in tunneling, four Roadway Support Machines will drive through most difficult ground, supporting variable diameters of up to 13 m. The machines are prepared for their first deployment. At Amsteg, two Hard Rock TBMs have successfully crossed a known fault zone by applying full circle steel arches and shotcrete immediately behind the cutter head. Comparisons between Drill& Blast and Hard Rock TBM are shown.

THE years 1914-15-16 were a pioneering period in mining, milling, and copper metallurgy generally. It was uncertain just what path the crushing, grinding, and concentrating processes would take. This situation was quite embarrassing to the directors of some of our large porphyry properties, then being equipped for production. Inspiration had already made several designs for its proposed 15,000-ton concentrator, incorporating in them the latest devices developed in the art of gravity concentration, only to have the work vitiated by the rapid march of events. In a little improvised plant, built on ground that is now in the crater of subsidence over the Inspiration- Miami orebodies, flotation was being experimentally &apos; applied to Inspiration ore by Minerals Separation engineers in 1914, with results indicating that this process would be of major importance in the concentration of the sulfides. How best to apply it, and especially how to crush and grind the ore to the very much finer sizes required for the new process, was a serious question, properly to be answered only by doing it, in full- sized machines, under regular &apos;operating conditions.

Discussion of the paper of D. W. Brunton, presented at the Spokane meeting, September, 1909, and published in Bulletin No. 33, September, 1909, pp. 837 to 855. WILLIAM&apos; KENT, New York, N. Y.:-The Institute may congratulate itself on the opportunity of reading the splendid address of President Brunton. It is au admirable summary of the progress that has been made in the mining and metallurgical arts in recent years. The paper rightly give&apos;s the chief credit for this progress to the aid which has been rendered to these arts by the advances in mechanics, chemistry, and electricity. It is notable that most of the headings in Mr. Brunton&apos;s address refer to the work of the mechanical engineer, the electrical engineer, and the chemist, rather than to that of the specialist in mining-operations. It seems that. the most successful mining engineer of the present day is the one who makes the most intelligent application of the inventions and designs of engineers and others who are not directly engaged in mining. A tabulation&apos; of the headings of the address, grouped as below, shows this most clearly.
