Blastings always generates induced vibrations through seismic wave, these are lost energy from the blasting and therefore causing the disturbance of slopes and structures near the blast source. Most of the components of an open pit mine have to reach a physical stability, especially during its closure process. Aiming to develop a vibration prediction model using the historical records from an open pit mine located on Peru, this research has two main focuses depending on the distance from the blast source to the structure: to protect the final slopes and to protect the villagers houses. Both are based on the Devine model of the Square Root Scaled Distance (SRSD) to predict the Peak Particle Velocity (PPV). The Mid field model, where is found mainly final slopes from the pit, limited by the failure criteria of McKenzie based on the geo mechanical properties of the rock mass. The Far field model ranges distances where are located the most community households, limited by the German rule DIN 4150 for highly sensitive structures. Both scenarios resulted on a distribution abacus to limit the weight of used explosives to get the best operational advantage and structure safety.

"Froth depth, along with reagent addition and aeration rate, is one of the crucial factors that can be used to control a flotation circuit. Sub-optimal setpoints and disruptions in levels have a severe adverse influence on grades and recoveries. A novel control strategy has been developed which provides exceptionally tight regulation of pulp levels. The controller observes and acts on all the flotation levels simultaneously. This provides a clear improvement over the standard approach, which is to use a set of Pl controllers. The system has been run on several industrial plants and has resulted in reduced fluctuations in level; fast responses to setpoint changes, and fast settling times after start-ups or disturbances. Testwork has shown that the improvements in level stabilisation translate into improvements in recovery and grades.IntroductionProcess control and optimization have an important influence on the economic efficiency of flotation plants. Inefficient operation can allow the wrong balance between grades and recoveries, and can also lead to adverse shifts in the grade-recovery relationship. Of all metallurgical operations, flotation loses the largest proportion of valuable material. Better operation can reduce these losses.An essential requirement of a good controller is that it should be able to stabilize and regulate the plant. Stable operation allows the performance of the plant to be observed without being obscured by the effects of disturbances and fluctuations. The optimum conditions can then be detected more easily. Good regulation can maintain operation at the optimum with proper neutralization of disturbances. Only when good stabilization and regulation are achieved can an optimizing strategy be properly applied.Froth depth, aeration rate and reagent addition are the three means by which a flotation plant is generally controlled. These control actions are effective on different time scales. Reagent addition is slower in its effect as some conditioning time is required. Since reagents are only added at the head of the circuit and at a few selected points within the banks, time is required for the effect of reagent changes to move through the circuit. Because of this slower time constant, reagent addition is more suited to process optimization and to dealing with slower changes in the process. An example of these slower changes is variation in the feed."

DURING the 30-year period spanned by these annual Howe Memorial presentations, many lecturers could proudly claim a kinship either as a student or an associate of the man whose memory we honor. Although it has been my good fortune to have attended many of these annual lectures, it was not my privilege to have known Henry Marion Howe personally. However, his great repute as teacher and scientist was known to all undergraduates of my day and the later years have enhanced my appreciation of his wisdom and foresight. Those who knew him well have said he derived particular pleasure from speculations on the future world of metallurgy. For this reason, I feel that perhaps he would not be unsympathetic to a lecture in his honor which departs from the highly instructive scientific presentations made in the past by so many able Howe Memorial lecturers, and which is concerned more with the practical phases of various steelmak-ing processes and some speculations on their future form and relative importance. The word "revolutionary" is frequently applied to each seemingly important improvement in the production of steel ingots, but in retrospect these changes, impressive as they appear at the time, are merely steps of progress. In the hundred years from the inception of tonnage steelmaking, only three processes can be truly classified as revolutionary. They are the pneumatic process, known in this country as the bessemer process; the reverberatory method called the open hearth process; and, the electric furnace process. There have been many variations and combinations of the three fundamental methods, but they remain truly the only revolutionary methods in steelmaking since its early history. Everything else has been evolutionary, in effect. doing the same things that we have done in the past but doing them better, correcting our errors through experience, and slowly but inevitably reaching a higher state of accomplishment. It has often been said that coming events cast their shadows before, and the production of steel ingots is no exception. As a result of the unrelenting demands of World War I1 and the years that followed, truly impressive progress has been made in steel ingot production. The incessant pressure for immediate results during this period required the employment of initiative and daring, as in few past decades, and many developments were brought to fruition. Of equal importance is the possible effect on future steelmaking methods of the many ideas initiated but still in formative stages. Fig. 1 portrays ingot production in the United States by the three fundamental processes over a period of 75 years and is interesting because it poses some questions as to future trends. The early ascendancy of the bessemer, its replacement in importance by the open hearth process, the amazing growth of the latter, and the recent challenge of the electric furnace are evident from the chart. Management is fully aware of these changes, but is even more interested in the future trends. Our concepts of the relative importance of the more recent developments and their possible effect on future processes may perhaps be best exemplified by a specific, hypothetical problem. Let us assume management is contemplating a new ingot producing plant with an output of 100,000 net tons per month, located in an area where some purchased scrap may be obtained but where by far the largest component will be own-produced blast furnace iron. Management requires a process or combination of processes which will yield highly uniform quality characteristics in the ingot form, and represent the soundest selection in investment and operating cost. Under these conditions, the obvious selection for the past four decades has been the open hearth process but, in view of more recent developments, management may believe that it is no longer permissible to disregard other possibilities with impunity. Accordingly, to be assured of the best possible selection, they request that you review not only the possibilities of utilizing the conventional open hearth, duplex, bessemer, and electric furnace methods, but also the more recent developments, such as the turbo-hearth, the Linz-Donawitz method, the Perrin modifications, and other possibilities. With this background, one might then appraise the relative importance of these methods to meet a specific need, and concurrently speculate on the forms that future ingot processes will assume and the relative importance of these processes.

Within the Business Process Improvement Program initiated at Placer Dome during 2003 was the Business Performance Management Project (BPM).BPMÆ s aim has been to extract productivity improvements from individual business units by providing a model for implementing leading practice based management process within the Placer Dome Group, sharing management best practice, injecting new management techniques and instilling a continuous improvement culture. The installation of an underground dispatch system has been a key component of the BPM project at Osborne Mine.Information capture and analysis allows for corrective action to be planned and executed before there is a material impact on the performance of a business unit. This paper briefly describes the principles and practices of effective business performance management, the four processes of a management operating system namely; strategic and tactical planning, implementation and reporting. The identification of business drivers, their measures and associated key performance indicators is discussed. The benefits of an underground dispatch system at Osborne with respect to safety, production and maintenance is described along with the installation process within the mining department that included its configuration, resourcing and roll out.

Small scale mining (SSM) has been going on for a long time in Ghana. SSM was legalized by the PNDC Law 218, 1989. Since then there have been numerous gains from the SSM industry. The SSM is organized locally by the concession owner who engages people to work for the gold which he buys. Small scale miners (SSMs) use crudely made sluices in Ghana and, therefore, their production falls below what is expected. The SSMs work in groups and not as cooperatives, as they do in Brazil and other Latin American countries. Legalization of SSM has curbed gold smuggling considerably because a gold marketing entity is available. SSM poses certain environmental problems like pollution of water bodies and soils by mercury and indiscriminate digging of pits.

Concern exists about the potential release of metals from the proposed mining operation at Martha Hill to the Ohinemuri River. Speculation on possible impacts is fuelled by the dearth of published data on existing metal levels not only for this river system but for streams throughout the Coromandel. At first sight this lack of data is surprising given the apparent interest in this subject and the fact that future mining activity in this region has been a possibility since at least 1979. That such a situation has arisen is not altogether unexpected given the difficulties faced by various organisations, including the mining industry, in determining metal levels which are generally acknowledged to be low. This paper presents data for a number of stations in the vicinity of the proposed operation; it explains the analytical procedures which were adopted and the rationale for them and relates the information which has been obtained to water quality criteria.

IN the parlance of Hollywood, it was a super-colossal meeting. In the more restrained language of engineers, the Institute's 75th Anniversary Celebration attracted the largest crowd ever; was the longest Annual Meeting ever held, occupying a full week; had more important papers, more important people, more of an international flavor, and more glamour than ever before. And in the minds of those who came to the big city from the wide open spaces, one other record should be mentioned: for those not on an expense account, it was the most expensive affair ever staged by the Institute! To state the attendance down to the last digit for a meeting such as this is impossible. The total names registered on cards, plus those who attended the Annual Banquet but were not otherwise registered, came to 3149. But a few were registered twice, and probably a still larger few did not register at all, but just dropped in for a session or two in which they were interested. It would appear that 3200 would be about as close an estimate of attendance as could be made, and that is some 300 more than came to the biggest Annual Meeting of the past-in 1944. A considerable number of members brought their wives, but most were delegates at large.

"On April 4, 2017, the largest earth-pressure-balance tunnel boring machine (TBM) ever built finally completed its 2.7-km (1.7-mile) journey beneath Seattle, WA, nearly four years after it began boring the SR-99 tunnel that will eventually replace Seattle’s Alaskan Way Viaduct.By now, readers of this publication are familiar with the ordeal that began on Dec. 6, 2016, when the machine overheated and shut down. Until that point, the TBM, named Bertha, had grabbed headlines for being the largest in the world with a 17-m (57.6-ft) diameter face. But after the incident that stopped the progress, the headlines suddenly stopped focusing on the engineering marvel of the tunnel project and began asking what went wrong. Just 300 m (1,000 ft) into the tunneling journey the machine was stuck, unable to move forward and impossible to retract.The project’s contractors, Seattle Tunnel Partners,(STP JV) – a design-build consortium comprised of Dragados - USA, Tutor Perini, say a 20-cm (8-in.) steel well-casing buried in the path of the machine caused the problems that halted the TBM. The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) disagrees, and the issue over who ultimately pays for the repairs is now with the courts.Eventually, engineers determined the best way to get Bertha back to work was to dig a 36-m (120-ft), deep concrete lined shaft pit in front of the machine and lift the 1.8-kt (2,000-st) cutterhead out for repairs. The repairs took two years but eventually the machine resumed mining in January 2016. In April 2017, the TBM finished building the tunnel, breaking through at the tunnel’s north end near Seattle’s Space Needle, with little to no ground surface movement measured on the entire alignment.While the cause of the TBM breakdown and who should pay for repairs was debated above ground, the work below ground continued. David Sowers, deputy program administrator, engineering and program management with WSDOT, told Mining Engineering during the 2017 Cutting Edge Conference in Seattle that in addition to the technical marvel that the tunnel became, the fact the parties involved were able to work through the unprecedented challenge is a great example of how to overcome challenges on massive projects."

Ferroalloy production is an energy-intensive industrial sector with significant CO2 emissions. In this paper the current situation in ferroalloy processes is discussed from the standpoint of global environmental issues, trends and development. Progress and data of ferroalloys production are frequently compared with the steel industry, which is a closely related sector and the main user of ferroalloys. Emission factors of processes and electricity production are examined as well as possibilities and future scenarios of how to diminish CO2 emissions. As a part of this study a questionnaire was submitted to experts in the field of ferroalloys worldwide to survey opinions on the ferroalloy industry today and in the near future (2020). Eighteen questions concerning raw materials, energy, environmental aspects, by-products and economic aspects were responded to by seventeen experts, the answers were analysed and conclusions were drawn. The extractive metallurgy of primary aluminum from its ores is discussed with special attention to the production of alumina from high grade ores by the Bayer process, including differences between American and European practice and a brief description of some processes for lower grade ores and the electrolytic reduction of the oxide to aluminum. METALLIC aluminum is not found in nature, but the oxides, hydroxides, and especially the silicates are plentiful. The estimated percentage of in in the crust of the earth is about 8 pct while that of iron is about 5 pct. By far the larger portion of this is combined with silica in the form of various clay minerals and igneous silicate rocks. From the point of view of extractive metallurgy of aluminum, these are low grade ores while the better qualities of bauxite are the high grade ores. There have been various definitions of bauxite but perhaps the best definition at the present time is that bauxite is a rock or earth commonly used as an ore of aluminum or its salts in which the aluminum is present predominantly as a hydrate or a mixture of hydrates and hydrous oxides. It contains varying amounts of oxides of silicon, iron, and titanium and traces of compounds of some of the less common elements. The silica is mainly combined with alumina as clay or clay minerals which are hydrous aluminum silicates, although a part of it may be present as quartz sand. On the American continents, the alumina is mainly present as gibbsite, Al2O3 . 3H2O, and the same may be said of the best known deposits of the Dutch East Indies and some of the deposits in India. In France and other countries in Europe as well as in Africa, the alumina is present mainly as boeh-mite, A12O3 . H2O, but in some of these deposits it is mixed with minor amounts of gibbsite. Some other deposits, such as those in the islands of Haiti and Jamaica, evidently contain two or more hydrates or hydrous oxides of alumina in varying proportions. Perhaps the main portion of the alumina may be present as gibbsite and boehmite with the proportion between the two varying rather widely. In the silicate minerals, including clay, the alumina is chemically combined with silica and has not been separated satisfactorily by mechanical or physical ore-dressing methods. Low grade bauxites are mixtures of hydrates, usually gibbsite or boehmite, with clay, iron oxides, etc. In some low grade bauxites, it is possible to separate a portion of the gibbsite or boehmite, which may be present as relatively hard and coarse particles, from soft or finely divided clay minerals by log washing or similar methods. This has been applied to the product of some mines or parts of them, but on other ores it is not applicable. In some cases the gibbsite or boehmite is almost as fine and soft and of nearly the same specific gravity as the clay minerals so that washing and gravity separations are not successful. The iron oxide, the clay minerals, and a part of the titanium minerals are often so finely dispersed in the ore that any of the physical mineral separation methods, including separations by gravity, particle size, flotation, and electrostatic or magnetic separation, have not been commercially SUCCESSFUL except on relatively small lots of ore. For these reasons, the only available methods of separation on the general run of ores have been methods which would be classed as chemical rather than physical or mechanical separations. Aluminum oxide can be reduced by carbon at temperatures above 1800°C to form metallic aluminum and aluminum carbide or nitride. The temperature for rapid reduction of aluminum oxide to metallic aluminum is about the boiling point of aluminum and above the temperatures necessary to reduce iron, silicon, and titanium so that the direct reduction of an aluminum ore with carbon will produce an alloy of aluminum, iron, titanium, silicon, etc., which may be mixed with carbides and nitrides. Also a large amount of the reduced aluminum may be lost as a vapor except in the presence of some alloying agent such as copper or other metals. While it is possible to refine such alloys or mixtures so as to produce commercially pure aluminum, the methods which have been found are too expensive for the present market. The location of underground positions in mines has usually fallen to their survey department's. Their usual tasks include: ? installation of a high-precision peg network like the National Survey grid as beacons ? offset measurements to the sidewalls, and sometimes hangingwall and footwalls, of development tunnels and excavations ? offsetting of stoping panels for the calculation of face ? advance and the square meterage of area removed. Other departments build their observations into the plans produced by the surveyors. If more precision is required, they ask the surveyors to `elevate' their points with a theodolite. Apart from the survey peg network and `elevations' these measurements are usually planer measurements suitable for producing plans, sections and projection sheets. When the only representation medium was a sheet of paper or transparency, this was perfectly suitable. However the development of CAD models of the workings has changed all this. Full 3D representation is not properly catered for in the tool sets in current use, and needless hours are spent converting analogue-type observations into digital form. The basic survey models need to be augmented by the observations of other disciplines that are also required to locate positions underground. These include: ? the need for geologists to plott their mapping and ? borehole logs into 3D space ? the need for samplers to position their sample points accurately because the geostatistical models are biased and inaccurate ? the need for stoping width recorders to position their thickness observations to prevent errant evaluation and bonuses ? the need for rock engineers to place their mappings into 3D to build true geotechnical models to manage geotechnical stresses ? the need for production officials to receive updated face ? positions during the month so that they can manage the ? production and utilize their resources properly. This paper covers a new method of positioning profiling points to a suitable degree of accuracy. I believe the method is sufficiently simple and cheap for all to use. Historical methods Platinum and gold orebodies, especially in South Africa, are generally narrow tabular deposits. This made them suitable for depicting on a 2D medium like paper. The determination of stoping or face widths was not a problem, as the ore is removed in a single stoping process. Such 2D representations could be easily positioned using tape offsetting between survey pegs or points tied in from survey pegs. Problems of dip were handled by using 'Stope Sheets' which chose a best fit projection for the whole area depicted or by using true dip section sheets for inclined tunnels. Rolling reef and potholes were the common areas of difficulty. Most mines now model their orebody and plan the extraction in computer graphics. This means that the representation of the current workings has to change to support this trend. It now becomes a truly 3D problem. Mining officials find it inconvenient to have their actual workings in single-line depictions while their orebody is depicted with top and bottom contacts and the planned tunnels in 3D shapes. Geological models which form the basis for the resource model and planning process are often out of date, as the updating process is slow. The geological mapping has to be plotted onto sections and plans. These are then digitized into graphics by a draughtsman and checked by the geologist. Only then does the interpretation and model update take place. Potential methods to create 3D 'Actuals' Global positioning systems (GPS) Surface mines have been blessed by the advent of GPS technology. These simple-to-operate pieces of equipment and compatible software make it possible for all types of mine employees to locate themselves, and therefore to locate their observations. GPS are often inexpensive and give an acceptable degree of accuracy. Only in deep pits or close to the highwalls are observations hindered. Such technology cannot however, work underground. Ground penetrating radar (GPR) GPR is reported to be very useful for estimating the positions of potholes and faults. However it is still considered as providing an estimate, not a definite measurement. GPR is good for seeing into solid rock, not into open spaces. Inertia reading devices Experiments with inertia reading devices have been conducted on the mines. They were the forerunners of GPS for military guidance systems, and were even used for city navigation in the early 70s. They do however work best with heavy or fast-spinning gyros. Anglogold Ashanti's attempt to use them were discontinued in the mid-90s when the developers asked for an additional few million rand for a device that would weigh more than 12 kg and have a limited operational life.

The reduction of iron dissolution and acid consumption is fairly important in the extraction of Ni and Co from laterite ores from both economic and efficiency perspectives. BGRIMM conducted detailed research to investigate the behavior of iron in a nickel laterite leaching process. The mineralogy of Ni and Co was studied. In limonite ore about 76% of nickel is present in goethite while in saprolite ore 79% of nickel is associated with magnesium and silicon minerals. Test work revealed that limonite can be decomposed completely with enough acid concentration during atmospheric leaching. More than 98% of Ni and Co were leached into solution while 85% of the iron was also dissolved with 130-140 g/L iron in solution. Iron precipitates as hematite in the temperature range 250-270?C without neutralization reagents. That’s why limonite is treated by high pressure acid leaching (HPAL) technology to achieve nickel extraction and iron precipitation in the same autoclave. BGRIMM’s test results indicated that the remaining acid in atmospheric leaching solution and acid released by iron precipitation at a lower temperature was enough to leach saprolite efficiently. The so-called inverse leaching technology leaches limonite at atmospheric condition and the leaching slurry combined with saprolite is pumped into an autoclave to leach saprolite at 150-170?C. In the autoclave iron precipitates as hematite without acid consumption. Total nickel and cobalt extractions in the test program were more than 90% with iron content in solution below 8 g/L. In this inverse process iron dissolves in the atmospheric leaching stage and precipitates as hematite in the low temperature leaching stage. Compared with HPAL the leaching temperature is reduced to 150-170 ºC from 250-270 ºC. Compared to atmospheric tank leaching acid consumption is reduced from 850-950 kg/t ore (atmospheric) to 550-650 kg/t ore (inverse).

The future of any mining company depends on maintaining and growing its access to high-quality mineral resources. Often the true size of a given resource is not fully recognised until after mining has commenced. Also, the strong desire to increase production puts pressure to expand the resource base of the mine to get maximum value out of the capital employed. This, plus diminishing M&A opportunities and declining world-class greenfield discovery rates, makes brownfields exploration a high priority activity in any operating company. For the success and long-term survival of the company it is critical that this is done well. The primary aim of brownfields exploration is to find or acquire new deposits within economic transport distance of an existing mine that will add materially to shareholder value through: mine or capacity expansion, displacement of lower-margin ore from the mine plan, preserving and extending the mine life, and ensuring potential value is understood in order to maximise potential future mine development or exit. A number of strategic principles are important in any program designed to achieve these aims: understanding the life of mine (LOM) production profile and the related key drivers for exploration, understanding the dynamic nature of the brownfields search space, understanding and measuring depletion of the brownfields search space, understanding the potential of the near-mine region, investing in exploration technology to expand the search space, and investing in a basic geological understanding of the ore-environment. Examination of the LOM profile will highlight critical issues facing development plans for the mine including future grade and throughput issues, key technology requirements or innovations and scenarios for increased production. Exploration targets in the brownfields program should address these key issues. Often it is as æsimpleÆ as keeping mine development sufficiently far ahead of extraction to allow time for the various phases of exploration and resource assessment drilling. Because of the low additional capital costs required, expansion of the brownfields search space is strongly leveraged to: metal prices, development of new markets, incremental operating cost reductions, strategic changes in downstream requirements in integrated businesses, depletion of higher unit-value ores, and new technologies (both extraction and exploration). Therefore the brownfields search space is likely to incrementally expand through time and must be regularly reviewed. This is also important as any given search space will be progressively exhausted, resulting in smaller and higher cost discoveries. It is therefore important to monitor and critically review sustained trends of increasing brownfields discovery cost. The first wave of discoveries in any camp are usually empirically driven and do not need a strong geological understanding. However, an improved geological understanding is critical to making the next generation of hidden discoveries. To illustrate these points, a case study was carried out on the exploration and development history of the Kambalda nickel camp. Over a period of 40 years, more than 40 deposits were found containing over 1.7 million tonnes of nickel metal. Efficient mines need to maintain reserves for operating flexibility. Consequently, the company needs to clearly understand the global resource in order to maximise its full potential. In addition, understanding the full brownfields potential earlier in the development of a deposit rather than later, creates optionality through the flexibility that this understanding brings to future development choices. To ensure best practice in attaining this aim, the roles and responsibilities of the exploration team and the mine operation should be clearly understood. It is important for the explorers and the operators to have shared views about what needs to be done. Typically, mine operators would be accountable for identifying future resource requirements to support the life-of-mine production schedule whilst explorers would be accountable to ensure best-practice assessment of brownfields exploration opportunities. This would include an assessment of the global undiscovered endowment in the regional near-mine area. The balance between brownfield exploration drilling and resources to reserve conversion will need to be decided to ensure efficient operations are maintained. Both need to agree the optimum level of brownfields funding taking into account: urgency to replace or grow reserves, and quality of opportunities (relative to those elsewhere). The ultimate cost of ignoring the full brownfields potential of an operating asset can be significant, ranging from inefficient and poorly planned operations, lost opportunity cost and resultant value through under-utilised resources and, in the worst case, early exit from the asset at the bottom of the commodity cycle û leaving behind huge amounts of shareholder value.

Despite the wealth of information available on phase equilibria of oxide systems there remainmany gaps and inconsistencies in our knowledge base. From an industry perspective there is anongoing need to adequately describe the phase chemistry of slag systems in order to optimizeprocess performance and improve productivity. Since this chemical behaviour cannot be predictedfrom first principles it follows there is also an ongoing need for accurate experimental data. The advances made in recent years in the capabilities of sophisticated analytical and measurement equipment have made it possible to develop new experimental techniques for the direct determination of phase equilibria in low order and complex multi-component slag systems. In addition the development of powerful computer modelling tools makes it possible to provide more comprehensive descriptions of the phase chemistry, to present the information in a range of perspectives, and to critically analyse the various types of related thermodynamic and structural information available. This review provides an overview of the types of information that can be used to determine phase equilibria in slags systems, analyses the influence of uncertainty and the relative importance of these types of data, and describes the advantages and limitations of the various experimental techniques that can be employed to obtain this information. Examples of recent studies are provided that demonstrate how an integrated approach to the determination of phase equilibria in complex systems, involving the use of targeted experimental studies and systematic thermodynamic model development, can lead to a better utilization of our current research capabilities and resources and more accurate descriptions of these systems. Longwall mining for coal extraction in deeper deposits is gaining momentum in India, due to the increasing stripping ratios and depletion of shallow deposits amenable for surface mining. In longwall mining, presence of multiple seams with varying interburden thickness is a major problem especially while planning for over-mining. An investigation program was taken up to analyze the effect of the presence of goaf and virgin coal blocks in already developed and extracted lower seam by bord and pillar mining, on the stress distribution in the longwall panel in upper seam. Studies revealed marginal increase in horizontal and shear stress as longwall face passes above goaf to the virgin area present in lower seam. Stress distribution over chock shields was considerably affected when the face in upper seam reached 15-25m zone above the galleries in the lower seam. A clear influence of the presence of solid coal, galleries and goaf in lower seam was found in the loading of longwall panel in upper seam.

Cyanide leaching of two West African gold ores was studied in multiple laboratories to provide process-engineering data for plant design purposes. Unusually slow leach extraction kinetics were observed using routine cyanide leach test procedures with pregnant solution monitoring. Carbon-in-leach testing, however, showed normal rapid kinetic behavior, with the same ultimate gold extractions being reached in much shorter elapsed times. Kinetic curves based on washed solids assays also exhibited more typical leaching characteristics. The results bore all the hallmarks of some equilibrium inhibition of the leaching. It was surmised that ore gangue components were responsible for weakly adsorbing gold-cyanide complex reaction product, thereby holding up soluble gold in the solid phase. The term ?preg-borrowing? was coined to describe the reversible phenomenon and distinguish it from irreversible preg-robbing. The two ores investigated may represent an extreme form of a more general effect that in most instances might pass unnoticed. The effect can lead to misinterpretation of kinetic leach curve data and underestimation of calculated ore head grades.

A number of parameters, aside from blast design and pre-existing rock conditions, can change the performance of the explosives system in actual blasting practice. Sympathetic pressures caused by detonation of preceding holes have been identified as a major contributor to explosive system malfunctions, leading to uneven blasting performance. These effects can occur both within a hole or across several holes. These can consist of high transient pressures related to the shock phase of the explosion or the relatively longer or quasi-static pressures associated with the explosion gas expansion phase. This study presents the findings from an on- going investigation on measurement and analysis of these pressures between donor and receptor holes in a granitic outcrop for representative inter-hole distances and borehole conditions, employing single cartridges of emulsion explosive in 45 mm diameter holes. The results, despite wide scatter in the measured values, show the very short duration pressures to range up to 7 MPa and arriving within a few milliseconds after detonation, whereas the much lower amplitude pressures arrive after tens of milliseconds. Both have the potential to seriously affect the performance of an explosives system.

During the past decade, Latin America has commanded an ever growing percentage of the world’s mineral exploration expenditures. Today, it controls approximately 30%. This has led to an increased number of large and small mineral discoveries over prior years for a variety of metals and the construction of many new mines. Its dominance is also seen in the larger than expected share of international mining capital investment. This has given its workers a competitive edge in global terms and an expertise that will ensure a long-term longevity to its mining industry. The best incentive for making vestment decisions is success. In this regard, Latin America’s success has compounded the incentives for further investment. Despite the large amount of foreign investment in Latin America, the wealth of these nations is not merely in its geological potential. The reason that several Latin American countries rank as global leaders in metal production is strongly influenced by their development of a strong mining culture, a culture which has been cultivated over many centuries. Good business practices provide another strong attraction to these regions. Additionally, Latin Americans have strong scientific and technical expertises. This is seen both in the investments’ size and the preference for high domestic employment. Relative to the number of domestic miners, the number of expatriates operating in Latin America is only a token few. In essence, the world markets are investing into the local geology and people.

Jet grouting has increasingly become one of the ground improvement technologies used to address seepage concerns and to provide strength improvement of soils. The technique of jet grouting uses high pressure/velocity jet fluids to erode the existing soil and then to mix the cuttings with cement slurry to form soilcrete. Excess slurry or spoil is ejected to the surface. If the native soil is not completely mixed with slurry, the resulting columns will have soil inclusions which can reduce the strength of the column and/or increase the permeability of the column. A jet grout test program at Tuttle Creek Dam shows that the completed large diameter columns contain perhaps 40 to 50% or more of native soil that was not broken up and mixed during the jet grout process. The test program included excavation of full-scale columns to a depth of 35 ft (10.7 m) for visual inspection and testing. Additionally, six of the columns were cut or sectioned to investigate the interior of the columns. The observed inclusions include significant amounts of both fine grained (silts and clays) and coarse grained (fine sands and sands) soils. Evidence suggests at least two explanations: (1) fine grained soils can be difficult to erode and break up into small enough particles that can be ejected to the surface, especially if at low natural water content, and (2) when large diameter columns are being excavated, the excavated roof of the cylindrical cavity may be unstable and may collapse. With this roof instability large slabs of material can break off, fall into the slurry and escape the cutting and mixing action of the rotating jets. This paper describes the Tuttle Creek Dam test program, inclusions observed in the completed columns, and suggests potential causes of the inclusions.
