The current economic downturn has been at the center of media attention for several years. Today, the mining and mineral sectors are being impacted by highly fluctuating supply-and-demand conditions, extreme price volatility and tremendous market uncertainty on a world-wide basis. There have been numerous plant closings, project cancellations and employee layoffs. In this gloomy economic environment, it is easy to forget that the world?s gross domestic product (GDP) has more than doubled in real terms during the last 30 years. While current market turbulence may continue for some time, the long-term trend is unmistakably upward. Living standards are rising all over the world, thereby creating demand for food, clothing, transportation and housing. This translates into tremendous demand for the mining and mineral sectors. In the future, new capacity and plant expansions will be necessary to meet this need. These investments, which typically have a life span of 30-plus years, will have to be based on long-term economic considerations rather than current market conditions.

The present work aimed to verify the possibility of using froth flotation to separate the constitu-ent minerals of an alaskite rock waste having as the main minerals quartz and feldspar. Three stages of tests have been carried through. In the first stage was used an amphoteric collector for flotation, diaminedioleate, at pH 2 and, after analyzing the final products, a very poor selectivity was ob-served. During the second stage of tests, different collectors that are normally used for feldspar flo-tation as amines, sulfonates and soybean oil were employed. Once more, it was not possible to reach reasonably selective results. In the third stage, a salt of etheramine was used for collecting the feldspar and hydrofluoric acid was utilized for controlling the pH. A simulation of three flotation steps (rougher, cleaner and recleaner) permitted to attain a good selectivity in the flotation process. A concentrate with a silica content of 96.6% was obtained. The low concentrate content of alkalis totalizing 0.52% and a feldspar recovery of 96.5% to the tailings, represented by the high content of Na, K, and Al2O3 in the tailings, demonstrated that the concentrate was made up mostly of quartz.

A SIDE from the technical sessions held as noted elsewhere, the chairman of the various sub-committees of the Mining Methods Committee, together with a few other specialists, were invited to a conference with President Bradley, which was held on Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 20. The general plan of a comprehensive series of comparable papers descriptive of mining practice in various parts of the country, launched by this committee some seven years ago having been adopted by the U. S. Bureau of Mines, the feeling was general that the Committee could safely 1eave.that part of its work in these capable hands and turn its attention to other matters. Radioactivity, the property of radium that led to its isolation more than 30 years ago, is the characteristic that makes it of value in the treatment of disease. Tyler3 gives the following brief history of the investigation: The way to the discovery of radium was opened in 1895 by Rontgen, who found that the glow from a Crooke's tube contained penetrating rays, which .he called X rays. Prof. Henri Bequerel, while investigating the effect of various phosphor¬ escent substances, found that uranium salts produced photographic impressions even when enveloped with opaque substances. To Marie Sklovouski, a young Polish student, who later became Madame Curie, Professor Bacquerel delegated the task of learning how and why uranium possessed power to emit these peculiar rays, which he had proved to be electrical in character. Madam Curie, examining by electri¬ cal methods the radioactivity of a large number of minerals containing uranium and thorium, discovered that some specimens of pitchblende had about four times the activity of the metal uranium; that chalcolite, the crystallized phosphate of copper and uranium, was twice as active as uranium; that autunite, a phosphate of calcium and uranium, was quite as active as the same weight of pure uranium. In order to check these discoveries, she prepared chalcolite artificially, starting with pure products, but found that this artificial chalcolite had only the acti¬ vity represented by its composition, or, roughly, 40 per cent of the activity of uranium. This led to the conclusion that there was some element or substance in the residue from uranium minerals that possesses a high degree of activity. After an exhaustive chemical investigation of pitchblende from Joachimsthal, she found that this mineral contained not only uranium but also another radioactive sub¬ stance, to which she gave the name of polonium, in honor of her native land. Later in 1898, Monsieur and Madame Curie found still another element, which, when brought to a state of concentration, was several million times as active as uranium, and to this was given the name of radium. Debierne afterwards found a fifth radio¬ active substance, actinium; and in 1906 Boltwood isolated the metal ionium. Strict¬ ly pure radium chloride was first produced in 1902. The first radium was produced commercially from the uranium residues obtained from the mines of Joachimsthal, Bohemia. Tyler calls to attention that, as the ores were a government monopoly, search was begun at once for sources in other parts of the world. As a result, radium-containing ores have been found in about 10 countries.

The mining and minerals extraction industries have often been demonized by the public as industries that put profits and production before people. It is true that the inherent danger of the work has led to more fatal accidents than anyone associated with the industry would care to remember. But, in stark contrast to what has often been said, the truth of the matter is safety is now the top priority of every miner, from the face of the longwall to the executive boardroom. Without safety, nothing else matters. This message was told and retold by representatives from some of the world?s top mining and petroleum companies from Oct. 11-13 during the inaugural Safety and Reliability in the Mining and Resources Industries Conference in Calgary, Canada. The meeting was hosted jointly by the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) and the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration (SME). It was the first of a series of conferences to focus on these important topics. Next year, the conference will be held in Minneapolis, MN from Nov. 13-15.

"AFTER SPENDING a lifetime in the mining industry it is normal that one should be concerned with the future of his profession, especially if he is directly responsible for the education and formation of future mining engineers. It is not necessary to insist on the importance of mining for Canada and for the entire world to prove the necessity of the Mining Engineer. A statement was made by Zay Jeffries, former vicepresident of General Electric Co., and here I quote: ""Even though minerals without man are of no moment, man would not be man as we know him without minerals ... ""minerals are as essential to the life of social man as food is to man himself"". This certainly expresses magnificently the purpose of the mining profession. These are the reasons why I have accepted to present my views on the future of the Mining Engineer. If I express some concern it is not because I feel that there is any danger for the profession to disappear; men will always respond to a challenge and this can be found in the extraction of minerals as well as in any other field of human endeavour. However, the first big question concerns the competitive position of Canada in the world of mining. To be made available to Canadians and to the rest of the world, all this tremendous potential mineral wealth that our country has been so generously endowed with by nature must be gained from the earth's crust at a competitive cost. Otherwise it will never become ore and will have no value. Let us not forget that although minerals are discovered, mines are not found but are made. So let us be more efficient mine makers. To accomplish this end, it is the duty of the different responsible organizations at all levels - be they governmental, para-governmental, public or private institutions - to do their utmost to assure the profitable development of our mineral wealth. The University has an all-important role to play in preparing all the specialists required by this intricate machine that mining is. All the different disciplines of engineering, health, social and -managerial sciences are needed for the good functioning of the mining industry. Although they are all essential, some will play a more important role as a member of the structure. In this discussion it is the role of the most important member, the mining engineer, who is actually responsible for the extraction of the minerals from the earth's crust that must be established. From this we will then be able to analyse his responsibilities and try to suggest the mining engineering program most suitable to prepare this engineer for his future role."

BOB FALCONER: Our next topic leader is Scott Lawson. Scott is manager of human resources for Independence Mining Company, Cripple Creek and Victor Gold Mining Company, Victor, Colorado. Scott has 25 years of human resources management experience in the mining industry, surface and underground, precious and base metals. His topic this morning is "It's the Employee That Counts." SCOTT LAWSON: When reviewing the topic of productivity in a union versus nonunion workplace, we need to look at who, and not what, can make the difference in ensuring the success of a production-oriented operation. It's not explicitly whether the property is unionized or not, but whether the employee team (including the "management group") is working together to accomplish common, shared, and meaningful goals. The bottom line is what action or actions can be taken to develop trust and to strengthen working relationships that challenge and compel employees to willingly share their particular areas of expertise. I want to share a real-life experience that happened to me during the summer of 1961. Perhaps some of you will be able to relate to the following story. I was an 18-year-old fresh out of high school, ready for my first true work adventure. I found summer employment for myself and two friends with the New York Central Railroad in Cleveland, Ohio. Our jobs were as laborers, laying ties and rails, and unloading ballast. We made $2.62 an hour. We were fat cats! My friends and I took on the job with a great deal of vigor, to the dismay of our fellow workers. These workers were unionized by the Railway Workers, which I believe were affiliated with the Teamsters. Talk about being naive, we wrote the book in 1961. When we took the jobs, we did not realize the employees were represented by a union, even though we didn't think they worked too hard. Within our first two weeks of work, we established new daily records for laying virtually twice as many ties as had been standard, and we nearly tripled production by the end of our hall of fame railroad careers. We even took naively to the next level by lining up the ties for our afternoon work shift during our lunch break. In 1961, we thought we were the Mantle, Maris, and Colavito of tie laying. For the younger set in the audience, we would have felt like the McGwire, Griffey Jr., and "The Big Hurt" Thomas of tie laying. A section of the union contract allowed for a 60-day probationary period during which the employee was evaluated and also exempt from joining the union. "FIRST OF ALL I should like to express to the members my sincere thanks for having had the privilege of serving them as President during the year now ending, to the Council for their guidance, and to the Secretary-Treasurer for his untiring efforts on both the Society's and my behalf during my year of office.During the .past five years the Canadian •Coal picture has changed considerably. In the West, production has been almost halved and many mines have been closed, due to the development and expansion of oil and natural gas industries, which, with some imported residual oil -on the Pacific coast -have provided competition which has been impossible to meet. The two major railway companies have embarked on an oil-burning and dieselization .programme and with this has .been lost one of the largest available markets for coal. Natural gas pipe-line installations still further threaten the remaining outlets for Western coal.In the East, retention of markets has also been a •problem, due to the intense competition provided by imported American •coal and the importation of residual oil.Because of cost it is impossible for central industrial Canada to be supplied with .coal from the Maritimes and markets are, therefore, restricted to fringe areas in Ontario and Quebec, and the Maritime Provinces.The dieselization programme of the Canadian National Rail ways has meant the loss of a large market for Nova Scotian coal and it is fair to assume that within a comparatively short time the market will be completely lost."

Deep gas and oil production has been substantially increased over prolonged periods through the use of sintered bauxite propping agents. Since its inception in 1976, over 170,000,000 pounds of high strength ceramic proppants have been employed. Recent field evaluations and economic analysis demonstrate the superiority of sintered bauxite proppant over quartz sand. This paper describes the development, application, field results, and product evolution of sintered bauxite.

THE problem of the proper size and capacity of the open-hearth furnace has been a predominant issue ever since its inception some sixty years ago. The original furnaces, built in 1868 at Landore, England, were only to 3 to 4 tons capacity, and from' this there has been a steadily increasing and almost uniform rate of expansion until furnaces producing 300 tons are in successful operation today. At the end of the first half of this 60-year period, or about the year 1900, 50-ton furnaces we're common. Up to this time the problems of expansion had been largely those relating to suficient capital and the engineering development of larger units. But as 75, 100-ton and larger furnaces were proposed apprehension grew and other questions assumed leading consideration.

A computer program has been developed that produces graphic representations of the atomic structure of any crystallographic plane of a mineral. The information provided by the program relates to a purely geometrical model of the crystal structure in which each atom is represented solely by the x, y and z coordinates of its centre. Despite its simplicity, the program can be used as a first approximation model in studies of the interaction between mineral processing reagents and the surfaces of mineral grains which are assumed to be coincident with cleavage planes.

William H. Blauvelt, Syracuse, N. Y.:—Is the coal itself from which the briquettes are made of good quality for steam-ing-purposes? Mr. Parker :—It is an anthracite coal mined near Bank-head arid used on the Canadian Pacific railroad. It contains about 83 of carbon, 8 of ash, and 8 per cent. of volatile material. With regard to briquetting of a mixture of fine coal and coke-dust, I understand that a plant has been installed near Detroit in which coke is mixed with anthracite; also the plant of the United Gas Improvement Co. near Philadelphia is briquetting a mixture of anthracite coal, the resultant briquettes being used in the gas-retorts. Mr. Blauvelt:—The purpose of the Detroit briquette-plant of the Solvay Process Co. has been partly to use up the coke-breeze from the by-product ovens and partly to utilize the pitch. La2Zr2O7 is a promising thermal barrier coating material due to its low thermal conductivity and superior high temperature stability. In this work, Bilayer La2Zr2O7 and conventional 8 wt% yttria stabilized zirconia (8YSZ) coatings were deposited using plasma spray technique. Both singlelayer La2Zr2O7 and double-layer 8YSZ/La2Zr2O7 coating architectures were designed. Thermal cycling and thermal shock tests were used to evaluate coatings’ thermomechanical properties. All La2Zr2O7 coats were delaminated in the furnace cycle test in less than 20 cycles. This is because residual thermal stresses accumulated during thermal cycling. In the jet engine thermal shock (JETS) tests, the SCL La2Zr2O7 and DCL dense 8YSZ/La2Zr2O7 coatings were fully delaminated. In contrast, the DCL porous 8YSZ/La2Zr2O7 coating sample only partially delaminated on the edge. This is because of the porous 8YSZ layer provides strain compliance. The findings will help to propose efficient thermal barrier coating systems.

Surface resistivity techniques were used at four field sites to monitor changes in apparent resistivities with variations in soil moisture content in the vadose zone. Apparent resistivity values were correlated with gravimetric moisture contents from soil samples taken at each site. Tensiometer readings were taken at two sites and correlated with the results of gravimetric moisture contents and apparent resistivities. Moisture at two of the sites was added by extensive watering; rainfall events were monitored at the other two sites. A recharge event at a dewatering program was monitored at a fifth site. A Ghosh-Koefed multi-layer computing algorithm was used to derive true resistivities from bulk or apparent resistivities. An automated data acquisition system was developed to measure resistivity changes and to process the data in the field. These studies are the first to evaluate measurement of moisture migration in clay rich soils using surface resistivity techniques. Results indicate that surface resistivity techniques readily measure changes in moisture contents in the vadose zone in clay rich soils. Correlation of apparent and true resistivity values with gravimetric moisture contents is more complex and requires additional research.

Designing rigging systems for complex castings has been more of an art than a science. Foundrymen have used thumb rules based on past experience to develop working designs. Of late, attempts are being made to formalize the procedure through the use of rule based expert systems, process modeling and other tools. Designing risers is one of the challenges of the rigging system design. Once the riser location have been determined, an optimization technique coupled with a casting simulation code can be used to determine the optimum riser dimensions. The main drawback of using a finite element or a finite difference based process simulation code along with the optimization routine is that the computation time involved is too large. Such an approach, thus, is unrealistic for practical situations where different options have to be explored and conclusions drawn in a short period of time. This difficulty has been avoided in the present work. The optimization scheme has been coupled with a modulus based solution routine to optimize the riser dimensions. The modulus calculations provide a good and quick estimate of the freezing time at different points in the casting. A functional, obtained from these freezing time values, is minimized by altering the dimensions of the riser until an optimum shape is obtained. Some examples have been included to illustrate the utility of this technique.

A novel methodology to estimate the dislocation density in cubic metals by using microhardness measurements has been established. The proposed methodology is based on the Indention Size Effect (ISE) phenomena and strengthening mechanisms of materials at the micro-level. The methodology was validated by using experimental data of lean duplex stainless steel 2101 alloy. The results are confirmed via X-ray diffraction measurements and they substantiate that the proposed approach can be used as a general method to estimate dislocation density in metals.

Commercially available flotation technologies for recovery of mineral fines have remained essentially unchanged for several decades. Recent studies have focused simply on improving mechanical and open column cells. Such studies have explored different control strategies and have aimed to improve reagent selectivity, fine air bubble generation and particle-air contact. However, no study has questioned whether current techniques are the most efficient technology for recovering mineral fines. Given that both mechanical and open column cells have a widely accepted carrying capacity limitation, the lack of extensive research into an alternative technology is surprising. Most recently, open column flotation has become an entrenched technology, and it is undermining the efficient recovery of mineral fines worldwide. An alternative exists. Packed column flotation overcomes the above-stated problems as the technology surpasses the carrying capacity limitation of current means by several-fold and almost always achieves the best performance in many comparative pilot tests and full-scale plant operations. Filling a column with packing plates creates a network of sloped walls capable of supporting a froth bed many times deeper than conventional machines. Having froth up to 75 percent of the total column volume tolerates all feed changes encountered in the plant environment and permits maximum flexibility in concentrate quality control. Furthermore, its scale-up is straightforward by increasing column volume or the number of interconnected small cells. As the air breaks upon rising and is distributed horizontally through packing plates, the air spargers can be replaced with a simple blower, resulting in considerable savings in operation and maintenance costs. Packed flotation technology provides a break-through solution for the separation of fine and ultra-fine minerals. Its simplicity, superior performance, and low cost structure make it an appealing alternative to current technologies and allow greater flexibility in downstream processing. Future industrial applications include a wide variety of metallic and non-metallic ores. This paper focuses on some recent scale-up campaigns for nickel and copper sulphide flotation applications compared directly to conventional equipment.

DOUG HALBE: We're not quite to the end of our session, but we're close. We've had a lot of fun with some of these spill ideas. But these are serious problems, and I think we might be able to benefit by continuing to compile these. Several years ago, the metallurgists at the various operations of Gold Fields Mining Company had a newsletter that came out every two months for several years. This publication consisted of short articles by the staff at the various operations, plus a few others, on problems they'd had and how they solved them. One very useful article, "Things We'd Have Done Differently at Chimney Creek," was written shortly after start-up. John Marsden was the editor and John Mansanti contributed to it, as did Jim Arnold (our distinguished co-chair) and Mike Gleason. I would be interested, with the permission of the audience, in editing that article to make it a little bit less abrasive and putting it into the record here. I think it's a useful SME function to maintain a list of things we've done wrong in plant design, things we don't want to do again. If we have another open session in the future, would others be willing, even anonymously, to contribute, bring slides, and say "Hey, look at the goofs we made?" [laughter, followed by support from the audience] Okay, we'll plan on that. And we'll try to include the Chimney Creek list in the transcript of this session-perhaps edited a bit.

ALTHOUGH surveying at mining properties is fundamentally the same regardless of the method of mining, at Climax, due to the nature of the ground, the policy of advance development work, and extremes in climatic conditions, surveying practice has had to be revised to meet the specialized conditions of this particular type of mining operation. The company's mine is one of the largest underground properties in the United States. It has proved ore reserves of 275,000,000 tons, 60,000,000 tons of which have been broken. To date, 109,000 ft. of development drifting have been driven, as well as 40,926 ft. of development raising, 10,000 ft. of ventilation drifting and raising, 16,000 ft. of exploration drifting, and 206,000 ft. of diamond drilling. Normal production varies between 1.2,000 and 15,000 tons daily. Development work proceeds at a rate of 11/2 tons developed for every ton milled and with a development of 18,000 to 20,000 tons per day, the following crew is required to take care of mine and surface engineering
