"For Berth 22 modifications at the Port of Oakland, nearly 600 octagonal 24-inch ‘diameter’ precast-prestressed concrete piles were driven, some piles over 160 feet long. Prior to production pile driving, an indicator/test pile program was performed, which included extensive use of dynamic load testing with (Pile Driving Analyzer (PDA) & CAPWAP analyses. The indicator test-pile program resulted in requiring significantly longer piles than the original design based on subsurface borings. The cause of this discrepancy is investigated in light of the available geotechnical information, soil mechanics principles and standard techniques for pile capacity computations. Several interesting phenomena emerged. These include relatively low resistances offered by crushed rockfill than would conventionally be assumed, non-homogeneity of an apparently uniform formation and the effects of jetting on pile side friction. Also revealing was the significant increase in capacity between 1 and 3 weeks of driving for long piles in clay. Recommendations were developed for pile capacity for future use as “lessons learned”.IntroductionThe foundation for the replaced Berth 22 structure at the Port of Oakland in California involved driving approximately 570, 24-inch octagonal precast prestressed concrete piles. A plan and a section for the pile locations are presented in Figure 1.The ultimate loads on the piles used in the design are presented in Table 1 – the loads are quite heavy.The foundation design was followed by an extensive Indicator Pile Program. The contractors (Manson Construction Co. of Richmond, California) opted to use a Delmag D62-02 diesel hammer (Rated Maximum Energy – 165 kip-feet). Per the project specifications, the same hammer was used for both indicator and production pile driving. The production piles of appropriate lengths were ordered based on thr results of the Indicator Pile Program. A number of interesting results were found from the Indicator Program, which is discussed in this paper."

In the USSR, the Moscow Institute of Radio Electronics tronics and Mining Electro-Mechanics (MIRGEM) has started what it hopes will become a nationwide movement to educate mining students in the precise specialties that industry has come to require. Courses for mining engineers, the MIRGEM faculty proposes, should dovetail as exactly as possible with specific jobs available in the mining profession. Acting upon this thesis, MIRGEM revised its own curriculum in 1962 and has since presented an over-all plan for Soviet mining education before two mining school conferences as well as the Ministry of Higher Education and a number of major Soviet industrial ministries. The plan was universally approved with some suggested revisions. SOVIET MINING EDUCATION TODAY At present, mining education in the Soviet Union covers the exploitation of solid minerals and raw materials, including coal as well as ferrous and nonferrous metals. The extraction, storage, and refining of oil and gas is treated as a separate discipline. In all, there are 33 Soviet universities and institutes that train mining engineers for careers in the industrial, research and educational fields.

Four types of slope failures in waste dumps are recognized debris flow, foundation failure, edge slump, and blowout. The first three types, although at times causing considerable damage to property and interfering with mine operations, are not usually dangerous to personnel because of their slow rate of movement. The fourth type, the blowout, is the most dangerous because of its explosive mode of failure and lack of forewarning. The December 1969 failure at Verona dump is presented as an example of a blowout. Data from piezometer holes indicate that the blowout was due to perched leach solutions near the face of the dump. The level of water in this zone is very closely related to the rate of leach water application on the dump. A detailed analysis of core samples indicates that the impounded water was perched on a zonal accumulation of jarosite which is associated with a buried dump surface. Drain holes proved successful in controlling perched leach solutions in the critical zone near the face of the dump. Monitoring of the water level in the perched zone is considered essential in preventing blowouts. The use of drain and piezometer holes has allowed an increase in the rate of water application on the dump while preventing additional failure.

ON giving thought to the subject of this paper, my first reaction was that many and striking changes have come about as a direct result of the war. However, more careful analysis indicates that few, if any, of these changes can be wholly attributed to it. The actual situation is that all these changes were conceived and most of them at least partially executed in re- cent prewar years, it remaining the role of war to achieve results in a fraction of the time that might normally have been taken, lacking its driving impulse. The further discussion will therefore be with the premise that the individual changes have been greatly hastened rather than directly and primarily caused by any war conditions. Co-operation among copper alloy producers on production problems is agreed to be much worth while. The industry was too long noted for jealousy and secrecy as to equipment, methods, and even materials produced. Gradually, a more open and co-operative policy evolved but even just prior to the war the interchange of ideas was relatively cautious and limited. The need for a great increase in production in record time fostered a more co- operative attitude; exchange of ideas and experience concerning all phases of production increased tremendously to the benefit of the individual participants and thus the war effort, too. This more united effort has undoubtedly led to many specific improvements in process or equipment and these in turn to more rapid and economical operation than could have taken place on an each-for-himself basis.

Considered as a whole, the mineral resources of the Turkish Republic (Anatolia) are in their untapped virgin state, and the little development shown is not the result of modern systematic geologic exploration but the continuation of the ancient open-pit mining methods of the Orient. When I came to Turkey in 1924, I found myself confronted by a formidable task because of the lack of preliminary geologic mapping. Today this condition has not essentially changed; less than one per cent of the country is covered by topographic mapping adequate for modern requirements. However, I was able to bring a semblance of order in a presentation of the mineral deposits of this country, by tracing the story of the mineral deposits that showed surface evidence of their existence. At present only the easily discovered mineral deposits of coal, copper, and lead-silver ores are being exploited. In the case of coal, of 3,000,000,000 metric tons available, only 100,000,000 have been mined. The same is also true for copper, lead-silver, and other ores, as shown in Table 1.

THE installation of the gas-producer power-plant in America has been so unusual that all engineers have viewed it with in¬terest; a large majority, however, regard it with a lack of con-fidence and many with positive distrust. Despite the fact that European engineers have usually been less inclined to take the initiative along experimental lines than are Americans, they have, nevertheless, developed the gas-producer plant to a very high state of efficiency to which they were forced by the neces¬sity of economy in fuel-consumption. The gas-producer power-plant is so common in Europe that engineers as well as the general public regard it with the same degree of confidence that is now universally placed in steam¬plants. With the increase in population over the last decade, and anticipated population growth over the coming years, Norway is making significant investments in the Country’s infrastructure. Part of this investment in development starts with the Intercity development project in South-East Norway, which is the largest transport project in Norway. The Intercity Development project consists of 270 km (167 mi.) of new doubletrack rail, capable of train speeds reaching 250 km/h (155 mph). The new stations are centrally located in the major cities, in South-East Norway, to provide the benefit to as many citizens as possible. The goal of the project is to reduce the increase in traffic, which is coupled with an increase in population, and reduce the travel times between the cities. The Intercity Development Project has an anticipated completion date of 2034. The Sandbukta-Moss-Såstad (SMS) project, part of the Intercity development, includes 10 km (6.2 mi) of new double-track railway and is situated on the Østfold Line, near the city of Moss, Norway shown in Fig. 1. The 10 km SMS-section covers three open stretches and two tunnels, including 630 m (2,066 ft) substructure for double-track railways on the open line at Sandbukta. The Moss tunnel is a 1720 m (5,643 ft) long tunnel from Sandbukta to Moss center, including a 420 m (1,378 ft) long concrete culvert. The new Moss station includes an 800 m (2,625 ft) long station area. The Carlberg tunnel is a 2350 m (7,710 ft) long tunnel from Kleberget to Carlberg, including a 200 m (656 ft) long concrete culvert.

The Penetrating Cone Fracture (PCF) technology 1 is a new method of rock excavation developed by Sunburst Excavation, Inc. of Denver, Colorado. PCF is a rock excavation method which employs tensile breakage mechanisms under controlled conditions to enable the continuous excavation of rock?in underground and some surface applications. The technology has developed rapidly over the last two years to the point where it is now being prepared for commercial application in the mining and civil construction industries. The initial commercial application of PCF will be undertaken at the Perseverance Nickel Mine of Western Mining Corporation Limited in Western Australia beginning in May, 1994.

Certain non-metallic minerals are used widely as fillers in the manufacture of many Canadian products. The first part of this paper deals in a general way with deposits of such minerals and their mining, with the concentration and preparation of the minerals for market, with specifications of the consumers, and with methods of control of the products to meet the specifications. The second part of the paper de-scribes talc as a specific example of mineral filler. Its production and uses in Canada and the possibility of producing higher grades of talc are discussed. Some suggestions are made for meeting the needs for mineral fillers as Canada's industry expands. RELATIVELY few people are sufficiently aware of the vast and important role that is being played in our everyday lives by mineral fillers. The phosphate mining industry is confronted everywhere in the world with financial difficulties and low prices which prohibit further investments and development of new mines even in regions with a comparative cost advantage (North America/ North Africa/ and Middle East). But old mines are being progressively exhausted/ and if no replacement mines come on stream in the near future/ we may soon find ourselves (around the year 2000) with a global annual production capacity of 160 million tonnes of marketable phosphate rock instead of the capacity of 200 million tonnes existing today. Unless prices improve/ phosphate rock/ a non-renewable resource and a vital commodity to world agriculture/ may turn to be in short supply to world fertilizer industry. Whatever the extent of recovery of fertilizer demand/ the expected decline of the production capacity during the 1990 I s is bound to cause the disappearance by the year 2000 of the important surplus characterizing today the supply/demand balance.

IN the four mills of the Cerro de Pasco Copper Corp. in Peru, some 3000 tons of complex sulphide ores are treated daily, with four kinds of concentrates produced: copper, lead, zinc, and pyrite, each containing values in silver, gold, bismuth, and some other metals. Copper occurs in the various ores as chalcopyrite, enargite, tetrahedrite, tenantite, bournonite, and chalcocite; lead as galena; and zinc as sphalerite and marmatite. Small amounts of silver and tungsten minerals are also present. The gangue consist mainly of shale, quartzite, calcite, rhodochrosite, pyrite, and pyrrhotite. In general the values are freed with a relatively coarse grind, about 70 prr cent minus 200 mesh being the finest to which the pulps are ground. In Morococha and Casapalca however. sphalerite particles much finer than this contain inclusions of chalcopyrit r. At Cerro de Pasco the silver and gold are present in all sizes of the ground pyrite.

The factors affecting haul truck tyre performance and the effectiveness of the management system at Rossing Uranium Mine were investigated with the aim of increasing tyre performance in terms of running hours until failure. The main objectives were to identify the types of tyre failure, their causes and cost implications, and evaluate the effectiveness of the management system. A site severity survey, weight study, and TKPH studies were conducted to determine the pit conditions, and an analysis of failed tyres carried out. The results showed that tyre performance at the mine has declined from 2009 to date, and the increase in lost value amounted to R5.7 million in 2012 alone. The main cause of tyre failure is loose rocks in the pit. The present management system in the load and haul department is not effective enough due to operational constraints it is facing.

For the past several years, inflation has placed increasing pressure on our economic system. The total effect of inflation is complex when combined with other factors which affect the economics of equipment. A mathematical model is described herein which can be programmed on a computer to determine the effect of inflation on economic life and profits after taxes. The computer output results in graphic plots which clearly show the relation of various percentages of inflation to life and profits. Inflation has become a common topic of conversation in the recent past. What is it and how can it be measured? What effect does increased inflation have on equipment policy? Research now in progress at the Construction Institute at Stanford University is beginning to unravel some of the mystery of inflation. As a start, let us answer the first question by defining the word inflation. The dictionary says that inflation is "an increase in the volume of money and credit relative to available goods resulting in a substantial and continuing rise in the general price level. It appears, in fact, that we are in an inflationary spiral which is "a continuous rise in prices that is sustained by the tendency of wage increases and cost increases to act on each other." 3 Inflation behaves just like compound interest. It takes more dollars of future years to buy an equal amount of a given commodity, be it a material or a service. Let us assume an annual inflation rate of 5 percent. "The application of piled raft foundations has significantly increased during the last few years. In this system, the raft and the pile group collectively transfer the applied building load to the underlying soil layers. Determination of load sharing between the raft and the piles derives the complexity of piled raft designs due to its multi-parameter nature. These parameters are but not limited to: soil density, pile length, pile spacing, raft geometry, and piles installation technique. This study is to examine experimentally the effect of sand density and pile installation techniques on the load sharing mechanism. Experimentally, tests were conducted on a square rigid raft with a single pile in sand under three different soil densities; 30%, 45%, and 60%. The experimental results are used to determine the pile and the raft shares in non-displacement and displacement piled raft systems. The results of this study reveal that soil density changes the load sharing of displacement piled raft; the pile share increases in higher soil density. However, this is not the case in non-displacement piled raft and load sharing is independent of soil density in working loads.IntroductionThe piled raft foundation is a combination of shallow and deep foundation which transfers the superstructure load to the soil by a complex soilstructure interaction. The interacting mechanism among foundation elements and their surrounding soil is illustrated schematically in Figure 1 and could be classified into two categories: (1) pile-soil-pile and (2) pile-soil-raft. The pile-soil-pile interaction is the same as the free standing pile group and is a function of pile spacing and pile installation method. Pile-soil-raft interaction, which only involves in piled raft foundation design, could be affected by: the length, spacing, and roughness of the pile, the rigidity and dimension of the cap, soil condition, and the pile installation method. Pile-soil-raft interaction could have favourable and unfavourable effects on bearing capacity and settlement, respectively. The pressure between the cap and the soil favourably increases the horizontal stress on the pile shaft and consequently increase the shaft resistance. Whereas, this pressure induces negative skin friction on the piles which increases the settlement. The pile-soil-raft interaction mainly controls the load sharing mechanism of piled raft foundation when pile spacing (S) is more than 3.5dp."

Mechanized tunnelling is undoubtedly one of the most innovative disciplines in the international construction industry. Technological progress in the planning and production of most modern infrastructure is constantly striving for new records on basis of highly specialized solutions and know-how. Humans and technology have accomplished excellent achievements over the past few years in varied, difficult terrain. New length records are being set with the 64 km long Brenner Base Tunnel and the HS2 Railway system currently under construction in Europe. Cities are building ever longer and more demanding sewer tunnels. The paper highlights some of the challenges, trends and innovations of long-distance tunnelling projects.

Two improved methods have been developed to transfer microfilmed mine maps to suitable base maps showing surface features. The methods provide for (1) positioning and orienting maps; (2) merging adjacent maps; and (3) plotting maps at a common scale. One method produces an overlay mosaic of mine maps using an Integrated camera-processor. This photographic method shows the details of mine workings and is most useful for specific limited-area projects. In the second method, outlines of mine maps are digitized, manipulated, and plotted as overlays using a computer. This computer method can plot mine outlines and spatially index large numbers of microfilmed maps. Microfilmed mine maps used in this Bureau of Mines study are on file in the Mine Map Repository of the Eastern Field Operations Center. The base maps are U.S. Geological Survey 7.5-minute topographic maps. The demonstration area is located in the New Kensington East and West quadrangles, Pennsylvania.

"Mining Companies have producing assets in increasingly diverse portions of the world. It is not uncommon that the owner, the design team, the mine contractors and the operators are all based in different countries. While these assets are always subject to the regulatory requirement of those countries there have not been international standards available to review and evaluate these assets. This becomes particularly important when considering safety critical items such as tailings dams, vertical shaft systems and autonomous vehicles to highlight a few. The work currently being completed in ISO ensures these standards will be available and will be generated by and subscribed to on an international basis, thus removing the potential for patriotic partisanship and ensuring safe and predictable systems are installed. This paper will discuss the benefits of the international standards, the structure of the teams and working groups who are generating these standards as well as the process by which the standards are generated. This will allow insight into the creation of the standard and will aim to demonstrate the “neutral” and technically strong manner in which the generation of these standards is achieved. In addition, the paper will discuss the standards which have been produced in the last five years as well as the current standards which are in place. The finale will discuss upcoming work and the timelines in which it is anticipated these will be completed. The ISO/TC 82 – Mining was founded in 1955. This was an active committee until it was thought that the standards at the time were adequate and the Technical Committee was put on “Care and Maintenance”. In 2012 countries lobbied ISO to pull this committee from dormancy and restart it, this happened in in the same year."

Through expanding technology and the use of substitutes and synthetics, availability of the world's sources of natural wealth is today many times that of a hundred or a thousand years ago. And so it is with petroleum. Technology is also the great multiplier of our petroleum resources. For suitable production planning in an open pit mine, and also to carry out the optimisation process during the mining production cycle, prediction of fragment size distribution is required prior to carrying out the blasting operation. For this purpose, many prediction models, such as empirical models, were presented. The proficiency of these models differs in various conditions and mines. Therefore, in this paper the most important models, including SveDeFo, Kuz-Ram, CZM, Modified Kuz-Ram in 2005, Kuznestsov-Cunningham-Ouchterlony (KCO) and also Gheibie et al, were examined by the information of 20 blasts in Gol-Gohar iron ore mine. Fourteen images were taken on average for each blast. For image processing analysis Split-Desktop software was used. After examination, it was understood that none of the available empirical fragmentation models had presented acceptable performance, except the Kuz-Ram model for magnetite ore, which had somewhat acceptable results. However, this model for blasting patterns in hematite presented unsuitable results. Examination and comparison of two important distribution functions, Rosin-Rammler and Swebrec, were carried out and it was observed that the performance of Swebrec for fines was far better than Rosin-Rammler. Continuing advances in manufactured diamond materials used in rock cutting tools have created a new generation of high production tools for mining. This paper will review the three major manufactured diamond products available for the mining industry as supplied by General Electric Company, Specialty Materials Department, and examine the ways in which these materials are employed. As an integral part of this examination, the economic impact of manufactured diamond tools will be evaluated. Time and again, one will find that the premium price of these tools is economically justified when compared to traditional tools.
