The Bureau of Mines researched methods for recovering copper from cyclone and electrostatic-precipitator dusts of primary copper smelters as part of its program to maximize minerals and metals recovery from primary and secondary domestic resources. Small-scale studies showed that use of 110 pct stoichiometric sulfur and 123 pct stoichiometric carbon, based on producing a 40-pct copper-iron matte, resulted in the recovery of 95 pct of the copper contained in the dust. Typical mattes contained less than 10 pct of the arsenic, 30 pct of the bismuth, and 45 pct of the antimony and tin contained in the dust. Matte was converted to blister copper by injecting up to 200 pct of the stoichiometric oxygen requirement over a period of 2 to 3 hours. Up to 76 pct of the copper contained in the dust was recovered as a crude blister copper containing about 2 pct arsenic, 0.5 pct antimony, and less than 0.1 pet bismuth and tin. A matte-white metal product resulted from carbothermically reducing dust with coal, lime, and silica. Up to 95 pct of the copper was recovered in the combined product.

This report is a compilation of results of brief preliminary tests on sulfide ores that contained gold and silver and, in some cases base metals. It is a companion paper to a recent similar report on oxide ores. Simple treatment methods employing the least possible equipment sometimes produce satisfactory results on marginal ores and in small-scale operations. Investigations of typical ores from newly discovered or recently explored mining districts have been made in continuation of a long-established part of the hydrometallurgical and ore-dressing program of the Reno station, Bureau of Mines. The purpose of such investigations is to encourage the search for and development of mineral resources and particularly to assist in the economical exploitation of low-grade and marginal ores as well as the conservation and recovery .of values in products that were discarded from former operations because of inability to treat them profitably. Several of these investigations have been limited to preliminary tests of samples from prospecting operations, whereas same involved samples of old dumps or tailings piles. The test work in these cases was not extensive enough to warrant publication as individual reports, but is of considerable interest inasmuch as it indicates the possibilities as well as the limitations of treating the respective materials. The samples were representative of the districts from which they wore obtained, so this information should be helpful in the future development of these districts.

THE study of diamond drill results at the Lake Athabaska property of Athona Mines, Limited, and the co-ordination of information secured, has demanded extensive application of methods for interpreting true conditions, both structurally and from the point of view of ore outlook. This work was in charge of a capable engineer, who, as the result of exhaustive study of the drill cores, has been able to issue maps and plans exceeding the expectations of the majority of engineers and geologists who visited the field during the past summer (1935); that is, having in view the fact that staking of the property had been completed but a few months beforehand and that geological conditions were practically unknown up to the time drilling began in April. The following pages present an outline of the work of the assay and engineering offices in co-ordinating and interpreting the results of the drilling. The writer desires to acknowledge the suggestions offered by A.P. Beavan, geologist and engineer at Athona Mines, whom he assisted during the drilling campaign, and also the co-operation of the drilling contractor's employees. The geological map, mine plans, and forms accompanying the paper are from the Company's engineering office files.

F OR many years, only one grade of structural steel has been used in volume in Canada. Its characteristics have not been altered appreciably and its long use speaks well for its performance. This standard grade of structural steel may be bought and specified as C.S.A. G40.4 steel or the American equivalent, A.S.T.M. A7. The principal limitations and requirements of this specification are shown in Table I. Within the last five years there has been a growing awareness among the steel producers and steel fabricators that economic forces are at work which make desirable the availability of new and better grades of structural steel. Competition from other materials has increased. The use of concrete bridges and pre-stressed concrete beams is a prime example. New sources of steel from outside the country have become a threat to the Canadian industry and its high cost-price structure. Mining companies are required by law to improve representation of women on their boards. However, progress in this regard has been slow. Boards of directors play an important role in formulating corporate strategy, risk assessment, and effective governance for sustained financial performance. Although some women have successfully maintained board seats, others have been unable to do so. It is difficult to ascertain whether women are being appointed as tokens to satisfy social pressures, as little is known about the experiences of women board members in mining, which may inform or refute tokenism. In-depth interviews were conducted with 20 women and 16 men across six listed mining companies. Thematic data analysis revealed evidence of tokenism where recruitment to mining boards is compliance-based and is informally driven by influential directors. Adverse boardroom experiences that further confirmed tokenism were reported by women, such as disregarding their contributions, condescending behaviour, and limited influence in decision-making, while other women sought to validate their competence and oppose social exclusion. This study recommends that a strong Board Chair and nominations committee is critical to ensure sustainable recruitment of competent and suitably qualified women; and further foster a culture of inclusivity and valuing gender-diverse boards.

The Australian mineral industry involves a diverse range of expertise and skills. Within that, the mining industry, representing mine planning, mine management and equipment operation, has capital intensive, high productivity equipment and a small but skilled workforce. Continuing education for all personnel in the workforce after formal school courses will be an important contribution towards improving competitiveness. The non-tertiary sector represents a significant proportion of the workforce and requires as much attention as the tertiary educated group. Competency Based Training is now being developed for the mining industry in Australia under the National Training Board and the mining industry is well represented in establishing standards and curriculum. TAFE is a major source of accredited courses but some mining companies are also developing internal courses not necessarily for external accreditation. Articulation of such accredited courses to tertiary mining engineering courses has been considered. The education and training of equipment operators through continuing education requires attention to operating skills, an understanding of the productivity factors under the direct influence of the operator and providing product quality to the customer. The education and training of mining engineers has been widely covered and continuing close involvement of the mining industry is required to ensure well balanced courses in technical and interpersonal skills as well as motivation to continue learning for life. Postgraduate research is a part of continuing education but the mining industry has to continually address the adequate recognition of post-graduate qualifications for the increased technical or management expertise and the development of better analytical and problem solving skills which can be directed towards improving competitiveness. More attention has to be paid to providing adequate financial incentives to attract suitable students, particularly after attaining some experience, and to address their professional career path with a company so they are not significantly disadvantaged by undertaking post-graduate studies. The Chartered Professional Engineer status as provided by The Institution of Engineers, Australia to qualified candidates is being considered by The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy as a further recognition of a member's specific expertise and competence in mining and metallurgical engineering. Continuing education plays a major part in the maintenance of the expertise and competence required for a professional engineer to develop and also to retain chartered status. Continuing education will be a significant part of the education and training of all the mining workforce towards improving the competitiveness of the mining industry. The major challenges will be the motivation of all towards lifelong learning and the integration of the various programs towards providing the opportunity for a steady and satisfying career progression.

"Oil sands tailings impoundments rank among the largest (spatially) in the world, covering a total of approximately 220 km2 of northern Alberta, Canada. A preliminary geomorphic design for an oil sands tailings storage facility (TSF) landform was completed with the goal of eventual closure and delicensing in mind. This paper outlines methods identified during the design process that streamline closure when implemented early in the mine planning and TSF design stages. With most oil sands TSFs currently in active operation (and some still in the planning stages), geotechnical engineers and mine planners have the opportunity to make operational and design decisions, such as those outlined herein, that are likely to improve the geotechnical and environmental performance of the landform post closure. ¦ KEYWORDS Alberta, Athabasca oil sands (AOS), Landform design, Reclamation, Sand dam, Tailings storage facility (TSF) RÉSUMÉ Les bassins d’accumulation des résidus issus des sables bitumineux font partie des plus grands (en termes d’espace) au monde, et couvrent au total environ 220 km2 dans le nord de l’Alberta, au Canada. Oil sands located within 100 m of the original surface account for 4,800 km2 of the total area and are considered to be economically mineable (Figure 1; ERCB, 2009). Bitumen, the thick, tar-like substance contained in the AOS, is extracted through open-pit mining and in-situ methods. During mining, the overburden is first removed as waste and the sandy, bitumi¬nous ore (“oil sand”) is transported to processing facilities via conveyor belts and 400 t trucks. Warm and hot water, as well as process aides such as caustic soda, are mixed with the oil sand, creating a slurry from which bitumen is mobilized and extracted. The resulting slurry waste product is called “tailings” and contains mineral solids, process water, and small proportions of unrecovered bitumen (Masliyah, Zhou, Xu, Czarnecki, & Hamza, 2004; Sobkowicz & Morgenstern, 2009)."

The Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Natural Gas Department of the American Gas Association, has in progress a study or the flow of natural gas through high-pressure transmission lines. A major problem of this study is to compare the deliveries calculated from the gas pipe-line flow formulas commonly used, with the metered deliveries from pipe lines in operation. In order to obtain such comparisons a series of tests has bean made on 25 operating pipe lines in Kansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, Texas, and California ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Study of the flow of natural gas through high-pressure transmission lines was made under the general supervision of H. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) has recently studied several redirected scrubber discharge configurations in its full-scale continuous miner gallery for both dust and gas control when using an exhaust face ventilation system. Dust and gas measurements around the continuous mining machine in the laboratory showed that the conventional scrubber discharge directed outby the face with a 12.2-m (40-ft) exhaust curtain setback appeared to be one of the better configurations for controlling both dust and gas. Redirecting all the air towards the face equally up both sides of the machine increased both the dust and gas concentrations around the machine. When all the air was redirected towards the face on the off-curtain side of the machine, gas accumulations tended to be reduced at the face at the expense of increased dust levels in the return and on the curtain side of the mining machine. A 6.1-m (20-ft) exhaust curtain setback without the scrubber operating resulted in the lowest dust levels around the continuous mining machine, but this configuration resulted in some of the highest levels of dust in the return and gas on the off-curtain side of the mining face. Two field studies showed some similarities to the laboratory findings, with elevated dust levels at the rear corners of the continuous miner when all the scrubber exhaust was redirected towards the face either up the off-tubing side or equally up both sides of the mining machine.

Sulphuric acid of various concentrations has long been used as a reagent in the determination of olefins and aromatics in hydrocarbon oils4 such as gasoline, kerosene, and neutral oils from coal-tar distillates. Despite its long use, however, there is no general agreement as to optimum conditions and concentration of acid, and numerous methods and modifications have been recommended. In most cases, treatment of the neutral oil with 80 to 90 percent sulphuric acid, followed by distillation to the original endpoint to remove olefin polymers, is recommended for the estimation of unsaturated hydrocarbons. The distillate thus obtained is taken as olefin-free oil and used in later stages of the anlysis. Aromatic hydrocarbons generally are determined in the olefin-free oil by suphonation with more concentrated acid (96 to 100 percent and fuming sulphuric acid are recommended), the hydrocarbons not attacked and removed as water-soluble sulphoric acids being considered as saturated hydrocarbons. In some cases the saturates are examined further by differentiating between cyclic (naphthenes) and acyclic hydrocarbons (paraffins), Generally this is achieved by physical methods, although strong sulphuric acid is known to react preferentially with some types of saturated hydrocarbons. It was the purpose of the present work to make a general study of this type of analysis and to investigate the reactions of hydrocarbons under conditions often used in analyses that employ sulphuric acid reagents. Since previous work is not in good agreement, the optimum concentrations of acid for the different stages of the analysis were determined. Several sulphuric acid methods previously recommended and new modifications were compared, two synthetic solutions being used as the reference oil. The results obtained are presented below under separate headings.

A process that allows selective flotation separation of low Cu/S ratio minerals (chalcopyrite and pyrite) from high Cu/S ratio minerals (bornite and chalcocite) from a mixed copper mineral concentrate under controlled oxidative-reductive potential conditions has been developed. The process has been extensively tested on samples with varying mineralogy using laboratory batch flotation tests and mini pilot plant trials.In this process, the mixed final copper mineral concentrate is purged with nitrogen, and then treated with sodium dithionite to achieve a slurry Eh in the -200 to -100 mV standard hydrogen electrode (SHE) range. Flotation was then carried out using nitrogen gas. As a result, a low Cu/S ratio concentrate (<1.3) and a high Cu/S ratio (>1.6) tailing stream were produced. QEMSCAN analysis of the flotation products showed that more than 85 per cent of the chalcopyrite and 95 per cent of the pyrite reported to the froth concentrate. Chalcocite and bornite were almost evenly distributed between the concentrate and tailing streams.Surface analysis studies, focused on the mechanism of separation, showed that at a negative redox potential xanthate and possibly dixanthogen are the dominant hydrophobic species on the surface of chalcopyrite and pyrite. As a result, the flotation of these minerals remained unaffected. In contrast, a much lower concentration of xanthate species on the surface of chalcocite and bornite particles was observed. Therefore, it is likely that at low Eh the copper xanthate complex desorbs from the chalcocite and bornite surfaces, causing a decrease in surface hydrophobicity and the diminished floatability of chalcocite and bornite.CITATION:Ametov, I, Harmer, S, Grano, S and Alford, R, 2014. In recent years the rapid depletion of high-grade iron ores and the demand by blast furnace operators for increasingly low-silica ores have stimulated interest in flotation studies of low-grade iron ores, such as wash-ore tailings and oxidized taconites. Four processes have been reported for the flotation separation of these iron ores--anionic and cationic collection of the iron oxides, cationic collection of siliceous gangue, and anionic collection of activated siliceous gangue (5).5/ The effectiveness of any one method, however, depends largely on the mineralogical composition and on the physical structure of the sample; hence, a comprehensive study of the floatability of the individual minerals occurring in these materials is essential. A review of the literature shows that the floatability of hematite and magnetite has been frequently investigated, whereas very little corresponding information is available for goethite, or for its more earthy form, limonite, both of which are abundant in the Mesabi and Cuyuna ores (19). The purpose of this investigation was to formulate general information on the floatability of goethite. Vacuum flotation, contact angle measurement, and simplified flotation tests using a modified Hallimond tube were used. The experimental results were correlated with the electrokinetic properties of goethite as determined by streaming potential measurement. The results were used to interpret the batch flotation tests made on an artificial mixture of quartz and goethite.

Beryllium is a strategic metal of ever-increasing peacetime importance because of the unusual properties of beryllium-copper alloys. These unusual characteristics are the combination of high strength and hardness, high fatigue resistance, and high wear resistance in alloys that have the corrosion resistance of copper. The principal industrial source of beryllium is the mineral beryl, a beryllium-aluminum silicate that occurs in pegmatites associated with quartz, feldspar, mica, and smaller amounts of various accessory minerals. The beryl is usually recovered in processing the pegmatites for the recovery of some of the other mineral constituents. Pegmatite deposits are found in various parts of the United States, but those in the Black Hills of South Dakota are the source of most of domestic production. The beryl marketed from the South Dakota pegmatite deposits occurs as coarse crystals, which are obtained by hand sorting. These pegmatites also contain other valuable minerals.

This report looks at the application of Shaft Boring (SB) as an alternative methodology to conventional mechanized Drill and Blast (D&B), Shaft Sinking. Various Continuous Mechanized Shaft Sinking concepts, equipment and projects are also reviewed in this report. Their significance relates to designs and systems related to Shaft Boring. Shaft Boring is increasingly a method considered for the excavation of deep and increasingly large diameter shafts for mines in hard rock. Many methods have been used as an alternative for D&B Shaft Sinking.

"Option pricing is used in finance for valuing options to buy (or sell) shares at some future date because it provides a convenient framework for quantifying values subject to uncertainty. As one of the main sources of uncertainty in mining is the price (sales) of the metal, this approach can also be used for valuing mining projects.The first part of this paper reviews options and option pricing; the second part presents the approach developed by Brennan and Schwartz (1985) for using option pricing to value natural resources. Several applications of this methodology have been published; these are described. From a mining point of view, the assumptions made by Brennan and Schwartz are too simplistic. The weaknesses are discussed with a view to improving an apparently promising new way of assessing the value of projects. IntroductionThe collapse of the British merchant banking group, Barings, has highlighted the risks that can be incurred by speculators and arbitragers in the futures and options markets. But this negative attention on futures and options should not make us forget their positive aspects. They can provide producers and consumers of metals with more predictable sales prices. The introduction of the new traded average price options, TAPOS, by the London Metal Exchange in January 1997 is a response to this need. Equally important, the theory that the finance industry has developed for valuing options provides an interesting framework for valuing mineral projects as well. While this paper was being revised, the South African gold mining house, JCI, announced that it was using a methodology based on option pricing for valuing the mineral rights to deeplevel gold resources (see Box 1)."

"The paper treats the spatial aspect of mine sequence optimization. This aspect is revealed in the context of determination of the optimum number of cutbacks of an open pit mine. Cutback mining is a dominating method currently in base\precious metal mining and it is based on a pseudo-economic discretization of the pit space by using advanced pit design algorithms. The result of the implementation of such approach of pit design is the generation of pit shells, which need to be grouped into an optimum number of cutbacks for maximization of the project value. A mathematical solution of this problem is developed with the utilization of a combinatorial analysis. The solution provides a multi-variant investigation of the optimum mine sequence with the implementation of an author’s method for production scheduling optimization, which uses the Net Present Value as a criterion for assessing the economic efficiency of mine sequencing. A case study is provided for the conditions of a hypothetical open pit gold mine to illustrate the applicability of the approach. The results obtained reveal the complex nature of the variation of the Net Present Value as a function of the cutback geometry. INTRODUCTION The mine sequence optimization in open pit mining is a procedure that predetermines the efficiency of the production scheduling optimization. From a technological standpoint, the mine sequence optimization deals with two aspects – spatial and time. Each of them plays a tremendously important role in searching for the optimum solution of the open pit design problem. Original results on the time aspect of mine sequence optimization are published by Halatchev [2002]. They reveal a wide range of the Net Present Value (NPV) variation for a multi-variant arrangement of mine sequence over time and using a fixed geometry of the cutbacks, which determines the economic potential of a single open pit mine from a deterministic standpoint. The results show a range of NPV variation up to 30% depending on the stripping ratio of the mine. The effect of this variation is mainly due to the implementation of the mine planning principle of waste deferment in the scheduling optimization and using all theoretically possible variants of mine sequence arrangement by the inclusion of the bench sequences over the Life-Of-Mine (LOM) in the production process."

This paper looks at the past, present and not too distant future of grinding mill relining.Since the adoption of autogenous grinding (AG) mills and semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mills as the primary ore reducing devices in the comminution circuit, plant shutdown frequency and duration has largely been driven by the liner maintenance requirements of these mills.The past 30 years have seen the introduction of many technologies to reduce relining times and frequencies. Advanced relining systems have been developed which include single and twin Mill Relining Machines, capable of placing large (up to 8000 kg) liners, high energy recoilless THUNDERBOLT Hammers, and high capacity Feed Chute Transporters. Despite these advances, today many of the hazards associated with mill relining remain and reline times still vary considerably between mine sites. A sophisticated discrete event simulation program, designed to analyse the mill relining process, has revealed the dominant influences on reline times of crew performance and of the need for safe access to larger segments of the mill.A new generation of advanced and semi-automated technologies is currently being tested that will address these remaining challenges. The Northern Sewerage Project (NSP) is a $650 M infrastructure project that will increase the capacity of the sewerage system for Melbourne’s growing northern suburbs while also helping to protect the Merri and Moonee Ponds creeks by significantly reducing the number of sewage overflows that can occur after heavy rainfall. The NSP consists of two stages: Stage 1 (NSP1) will be owned and operated by Melbourne Water Corporation, and Stage 2 (NSP2) will be owned by Yarra Valley Water and operated by Melbourne Water Corporation.Glass-fibre reinforced plastic (GRP) was used on both NSP stages, however, since Stage 1’s schedule for installation of GRP was slightly ahead of Stage 2’s, this paper will only focus on Stage 1’s use of GRP.NSP1 involves the construction of 7.9 km of new sewer tunnel ranging in diameter from 1.6 to 2.5 m, five main access shafts at depths of up to 65 m, and connections to the existing sewerage system including several access manholes. Construction began in 2007, and project completion is expected in 2012.The original design for NSP1 specified the use of high-density polyethylene (HDPE-) line precast concrete pipes as the final tunnel lining and HDPE-lined reinforced concrete for the access shafts and manholes. During construction, the rising cost of precast concrete pipes and the introduction of an additional GRP pipe supplier in the market justified a review of the tunnel final lining material. The contractor-proposed GRP pipe alternative was accepted for the final tunnel lining based on time and cost savings that were possible without compromising the design intent. After gaining experience with GRP through this design change, Melbourne Water Corporation reviewed and accepted GRP as the final lining for five smaller connection manholes. The use of GRP for the manholes was particularly inventive as the redesign made use of the approved tunnel GRP pipes as both a structural and corrosion-resistant lining.This paper discusses the use of GRP on NSP1; how the change in material, from concrete to GRP, affected the design philosophies assumed during detailed design; and how construction methods were modified to handle the less rigid GRP material. Details on the structural, hydraulic and durability considerations for the design are included, as are details about the time and cost savings and the quality and safety improvements that were achieved during construction.

Gold dissolution with bromine was studied by using the rotating disc technique. Geobram TM 3400 was used as a source of bromine. The parameters studied were: rotating speed, Geobrom 3400 concentration, pH, temperature, sulfuric and hydrochloric acid concentration, and the concentration of various cations (copper, iron, zinc, aluminum, manganese, potassium and sodium) and anions (chloride, bromide, sulfate, nitrate, and iodide) According to the Levich plot and activation energy, gold dissolution was controlled by a chemical reaction rate. Copper, iron, and manganese in their highest oxidation states, aluminum, zinc, sodium and potassium did not have any effect on gold dissolution rate. The presence of manganous ion dramatically decreased the gold dissolution rate. Kinetic performance of bromine, in the form of Geobram TM 3400, was compared with performance of cyanide and thiourea.
