Over the past few years the Cape Breton Coal Research Laboratory's staff designed, built, tested and proved the necessary hardware, software and methodology of tracer gas based surveying techniques applied in the field of mine ventilation. These methods are now used routinely in a variety of applications where traditional anemometric methods do not provide the required accuracies or cannot be effectively employed. Irregular or highly turbulent flows, leakages, geometrically complicated or highly obstructed airways are just a few examples where traditional anemometry can produce unacceptable errors in calculated ventilation parameters. Tracer gas based ventilation techniques have been used in many problematic situations where the standard ventilation methods are inadequate. One such problem, faced by many mine operators, is the emergency imposed by the ever present threat of a mine fire. An understanding of the propagation of smoke contaminants and the demonstrated integrity of appointed escape routes can save lives and property during a fire. That knowledge can be gained quickly and inexpensively by the application of tracer gas smoke simulation methods. The concept of controlled air recirculation has recently gained considerable attention in the mining industry. While mathematical models can be used to predict performance, the ultimate proof of a ventilation system's performance can best be provided by a tracer gas based simulation of contaminant levels. Fan performance tests and assessment of auxiliary ventilation systems are highly dependent on accurate definition of airflows; precise data can be easily obtained by tracer gas based volumetric surveys. This paper contains a brief description of the equipment and the methodology of tracer gas based ventilation techniques and presents typical examples of their use

The kinetics of reduction of copper (cuprous) sulphide with CO-CO2-He gas mixtures, using an excess of CaO(s) as a sulphur-scavenging substance were investigated in the temperature range 855° - 950°C by a thermogravimetric method. Several gas compositions were employed at each temperature. Potential carbon deposition was overcome by preheating the reducing gas mixture. The phase-composition and the morphology of partially reactedsamples were analysed by a SEMlEDAX unit. The reduction rates showed strong dependence on the bulk gas compositions (CO, CO2) and, in most cases, the rate declined with rising temperature. The rate-controlling step appears to be the diffusion of CO2 gaseous species through the micropores of the CaS(s) - product layer which builds up around the CaOcore.

THE decades immediately before and after the end of the nineteenth century (1890-1910) were a period of increased activity in mineral industry education. One reason for ,this, undoubtedly, was the rapid increase in mineral production in the decade 1880-1890; pig iron and copper production tripled; coal, lead, and zinc output more than doubled. Most of the other mineral substances followed the same general trend. Aluminum production began in 1886; petroleum output, which in 1888 was less than it was in 1882, almost doubled in the next three years. Gold alone showed no appreciable change until its discovery at Cripple Creek in 1891, followed by the Klondike in 1896, brought to boiling a public interest in minerals that had been simmering for some years previously. The first cyanide plant in the United States was erected at Bodie in 1893, and the first chlorination plant at Cripple Creek* the next year. Silver- lead smelting had already greatly developed, and the metallurgy of copper was almost transformed. The hearth area and smelting capacity of copper reverberatory furnaces more than quadrupled between 1878 and 1894; matte converters were first erected at Butte in 1884. Copper production of the United States in 1899 was 30 times that of 1872. While it was the increased technology used in mineral production that really made the field attractive for educated young men, undoubtedly they did not realize that, and were impressed mainly by the quantitative increase in output. Another factor was the increased general interest in engineering education; three times as many men took engineering degrees in the United States in 1890 as in 1880; 1893 showed almost a 56 per cent increase over 1890. "A promising long-term solution to uranium tailings reclamation has been the establishment of vegetation directly on the waste material. The soil profiles of areas vegetated for 0, 3, 8 and 10years are characterized as to the extent of soil development . The characteristics are compared with the visually interpreted soil profile. Organic matter content is presently the best analytical judge of soil development. Vegetation procedures have produced a build-up of organic matter in the top 10cm of tailings where natural microbial populations flourish. The CN ratio is high and the profile depth shallow, suggesting the need for additional fertilizer applications.IntroductionThe reduction of surface erosion and improved aesthetics of uranium tailings has been accomplished by the establishment of a vegetative cover. In 1971 research concentrated on developing methods of plant establishment at minimal cost and soil amendments on uranium tailings in Elliot Lake , Ontario. One process of stabilization used on a large scale was direct seeding of grasses and legumes into the tailings which had received only limestone and fertilizer treatments. Fertilizer additions were made for varying lengths of time in subsequent years to maintain the established cover.Maintenance-free vegetation would be possible once a soil profile developed with sufficient nutrient recycle and plant regeneration capabilities(1). Tailings vegetated in 1971, 1973 and 1978 that had received either 3 or 5 years of maintenance fertilizers were examined for soil development profiles. The extent of soil development and the relative effect of time and fertilizer would provide direction on reaching the goal of a self-sustaining cover.This paper is an abridgment of Division Report MRP /MRL 81-126 of the same title(2)."

This report is in three parts. The first part presents a review of theoretical models which have been developed to study removal operations for various types of materials. In the second part, a brief summary is given of coal cutting research. The majority of this work has been carried out in Britain using chisel type bits rather than the conical picks which are in general use in this country. However, a comparison of specific energies measured for conical picks in the laboratory and in the mine shows very encouraging correspondence. In the third part of the report, analytical models for coal cutting by picks are suggested. An extension of the British "tensile breakage" theory, developed for chisels, is given for picks. The role of crushing and cutting in coal removal is discussed as a theory which combines the two processes is shown to give reasonable predictions for specific energy requirements. Finally, directions in which the existing theory could be improved are presented and the need for further research is emphasized.

BLAUVELT, Anaconda, Mont.: Mr. Stetefeldt's comparison of the producer-plants at Aspen, Colorado, and Park City, Utah, is of special interest at this time, when the attention of all western metallurgists is so forcibly drawn to the necessity of reducing expenses and losses. The fact that wood was used at Park City before gas was introduced, for firing the Stetefeldt furnace and dryer, offered an excellent opportunity for showing the economies resulting from the adoption of gas in place of wood, as well as a comparison between the two gas-plants. Some time ago Mr. Stetefeldt contributed an article to one of the technical journals, in which the economy obtained by the substitution of gas for wood at this plant was shown quite in detail. I regret not being able to quote from his article at length, but, remember that the total saving effected would pay for the producer-plant in about one month. This is a striking instance of the advantages to be secured by the adoption of the best methods of using fuel in our metallurgical works. In comparing the figures from the Park City and Aspen plants, the difference of over 20 per cent. in the fuel used in the Stetefeldt furnaces, seems remarkable, even considering the larger amount of sulphur in the Aspen ore, and the greater rapidity with which it was roasted. It would be interesting to have Mr. Stetefeldt's, opinion as to the cause of so great a difference. The inferior economy of the revolving dryers at Park City might be overcome by lengthening them, or so arranging a second one above

Recycling of solid wastes, a common practice nowadays, requires the separation of the different materials in order to increase the products added value. The separation of one plastic from mixtures of different types of plastics is not easy due to their similar physical properties, but different techniques are available, from automatic sorting systems based on optical sensors to techniques adapted from mineral processing, namely gravity, froth flotation and electrostatic processes. In the last decade, many researchers have addressed the separation?s problem of different polymers, like Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) and Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC), two polymers commonly used in packaging which have similar density. One proposed technique is the classical froth flotation performed in agitated cells. Froth flotation is a versatile and relatively cheap process widely used in mineral separation. It is based on the different behaviour of particles in the presence of an inter-phase air-water, which depends on the materials surfaces properties. Froth flotation can be affected by some variables such as impeller speed and air flow rate. Agitated cells, when used with low density materials, like plastics, can produce overstated turbulence that prevents the adhesion and collection of particles in the froths. In this case, separation is favoured by column flotation smoother hydrodynamics. This paper proposes the separation of PET from PVC by column flotation. The experimental work was carried out in a column of 9cm diameter and 1m high. The effects of some operating conditions, such as depressor and frother concentration, air flow rate and feed grain size on products grade and recovery were evaluated and the best flotation conditions for the separation of these plastics were established.

Comminution of solids is surely one of the oldest technologies which even in this day and age of DNAs, chips and space exploration continues to challenge our scientific acumen and engineering ingenuity. In essence, this challenge is two-fold. One, as much as three to four per cent of all electric power generated world-wide is consumed in crushing and grinding primarily because the utilisation of energy is woefully poor. Studies have shown that the efficiency of mechanical size reduction processes is of the order of 1.5 to 12 per cent only (Schoenert 1986). Two, with the grinding technologies available to us, we have, at best, inadequate and, at worst, almost negligible control over the shape of the comminuted particles, size dispersion of the ground mass, and the sharpness of mineral liberation. Low energy efficiency and lack of control in the sense mentioned above have far-reaching implications for resource conservation, performance of down stream unit operations, and damage to the environment. Our problem is in fact central to the mineral-energy resources triangle shown in Figure 1 which depicts the close interrelationships among mineral resources which are becoming poorer in content and more complex in mineralogy each day, energy resources which are depleting rapidly without any viable alternate on the horizon, and environmental concerns which can no longer be ignored. It is evident that any improvement in the efficiency of the comminution process impacts directly on the control of environmental damage, conservation of energy and the economics of the operation. These concerns have special relevance for the processing of non-ferrous ores.

Determining the change of stress in rock based on measurements of the deformation of a drill hole is a procedure that is increasing in popularity. A closely related procedure involves the applicat10n of this principle to determine the existing stresses in a rock medium, by cutting free (core drilling) an annulus containing the drill hole. In this Bureau of Mines report, expressions are derived from which one can calculate the stress ellipsoid--the three-dimensional change of stress, or the existing three-dimensional stress field, as the case may be. Study of these equations shows that the stress components in three dimensions can be determined by measurements in only two drill holes, and yields general principles that are useful in planning an efficient program of drilling and measurement. Procedures are given for calculating the least squares estimates of the stress components and their standard errors, and for evaluating or comparing calculated values by means of standard statistical inferences.

Man had to learn to break rocks as early as the Stone Age, when they formed his main source of raw material. He started with chipping and over the years has reached a stage where he can employ atomic blasts and break, with one blast, millions of tons of rock. In between these two extremes there have been several stages of development including firesetting, use of the expansion of water on freezing in chipped cracks in cold climates, the use of low or deflagrating explosive black powder in about the 17th century, the use of high explosives with the discovery of nitroglycerine in 1846 by Sobrero, followed by the monumental discoveries of the great Swedish scientist Alfred Nobel in the latter half of the nineteenth century. The attempts to develop a stronger and still stronger explosive force were accompanied by investigations to understand the mechanism of failure of rock so that the force could be used to the best advantage; the latter, of course, have lagged far behind the former. This is mainly due to the fact that the chemical reactions involving high explosives as well as the processes resulting in the breakage of rock take place at too great a rate to be studied with the equipment that has been only recently available. Moreover, the development of stronger explosive forces was prompted by military necessities in the past and competition, at present, among highly developed nations. I. INTRODUCTION. WE owe to the courtesy of Mr. R. M. Raymond, Manager of the El Oro Mining & Railway Co., Ltd., the permission of publishing in this paper the results of a series of experiments and tests made in view of determining the economical limit to which the fine grinding of the ore by tube-mills could be carried on. For the sake of clearness, the following definitions are given of certain terms used in this paper, as well as of the units and screens in the experiments. Slime : In a general way " slime" is that mill-product, of which from 90 to 95 per cent, will pass a 200-mesh screen (0.067 mm. aperture), and which is treated as one class of material in the El Oro cyanide-plants. As a screen-product, slime constitutes all material that *ill pass a 200-mesh, screen. In sizing, the following products are distinguished:- Coarse Sand : That material remaining on a 100-mesh (0.111 mm. aperture) screen. Fine Sand : That passing through. 100-mesh and remaining on a 200-mesh (0.067 mm. aperture) screen. Slime: That passing through 200-mesh. Fines, which pass through 200-mesh and settle in 30 seconds, and silt, which does not settle in 1 minute. Sand-index : The number proportional to its total fineness considered from the economical point of view, as explained on page 93. It was not for the purpose of asserting any superior knowledge or authority, but simply of clearing up, in greater detail, some points casually mentioned in Mr. Scott's able paper, that the writer entered, some two years ago, into the discussion which that paper initiated. In such matters there is always room for differences of judgment, as well as for additional data, which may modify or complete the conclusions even of the best authorities. Those who are immersed in the duties of practical administration or work in the field, and who, being remote from the great scientific national libraries, are obliged to rely on their private collections, and to supplement them by their recollections of earlier studies, labor under special disadvantages in such a discussion; and it must be to the scientific and engineering world a matter for gratitude that Mr. Lyman has been willing to give the benefit of his advantages in this respect. Mr. Lyman would, however, doubtless at once disclaim the conclusion that his masterly summary constitutes " the last word " on this subject, and welcome further evidence, comment and criticism, such as the various contributors may continue to offer. This, therefore, is the motive, and must be the excuse, of the introduction by the writer of the following observations. Since coal -mining records have been kept , reports of all mining States show that each year the lives of many workers have been sacrificed in the production of coal , and Illinois has contributed its share , Illinois reports for the 50 years 1882 to 1932 , inclusive , show that 6,673 men were killed -- 6,121 underground , 340 in the shaft , and 212 on the surface . Of the fatalities underground , 3,116 were caused by falls of roof or sides , 1,111 by haulage , 630 by explosives , 577 by gas explosions , 139 by electricity, and 548 by other causes ; 166 of the shaft fatalities were caused by falling down the shaft , 143 by the cage , and 31 by other causes ; 108 of the surface fatalities were caused by railroad cars , 46 by machinery , and 58 by other causes . Most of those engaged in mining are still of the opinion that it is an extremely hazardous occupation and that it is practically impossible to operate without accidents ; however , students of safety in mining now believe that with the proper attention to accident prevention mining may be conducted with little , if any , greater accident rate than that of other supposedly hazardous industries . There is no mystery connected with accidents in mining ; reports show that the majority are due to two main causes , falls of roof and sides and haulage . Mining companies in Illinois , as well as in other States , have proved in the past few years that the hazards of mining , like those of other industries , can be controlled to a large extent and the mines operated with few if any accidents , provided a great enough effort is made by employer and worker . Although the past accident rate of Illinois may compare favorably with that of other mining States it is higher than it should be ; the fact that 6,673 men (an average of 133.46 per year) were killed in and around the mines of the State between 1882- and 1932 indicates that accident prevention should receive more consideration in the future than in the past .

For more than 10 years coke-oven technologists have been investigating the expanding properties of coal on a scale larger than that afforded by laboratory test tubes. Koppers 4/ was among the first to realize that coals can not be differentiated satisfactorily with respect to expansion in coke ovens by the simpler test-tube methods; in his first method 80 grains of fine coal were coked in a cylinder heated from the bottom, so that the zone of fusion (plastic layer) advanced from the bottom to the top. The scale of test was too small; it has been modified by other investigators, but without significant improvement in practical application of the results. Somewhat later Koppers and Jendne 5/ experimented with a small-scale coke even, one wall of which was movable, in which the layer-coking in a coke oven could be simulated closely. This oven was heated from both sides. Their results with this oven showed a peak in the time-pressure curves near the end of the coking, period when the two plastic layers, advancing from opposite walls, meet. They also found that although the smaller oven was heated from one side only and did not show the Pressure peak characteristic of two-sided heating, it still gave results entirely too high. Russell built an oven similar to the movable-wall oven of Koppers and Jenkner and compared results obtained in it on Beckley expanding coal with these obtained on the some coal in the Altieri 7/ small-scale apparatus. Both tests were conducted at the same constant pressure, but heating was from two sides in Russell's oven and from one side in the Altieri tester. Russell found that the two types of test gave comparable results under constant pressure conditions even though the heating procedures were quite different. He showed later, however, that a "borderline" coal 8/ that contracted in the Altieri tester at constant pressure developed a peak pressure of 4 pounds per square inch in the movable-wall oven heated from both sides at constant volume. He concluded from this that testing at constant volume gave results more accurately indicative of dangerous expansion tendencies than those at constant pressure. He also found that heating from both sides in this oven gave higher pressure than heating from one side only.

A procedure was developed for the separation of lead and sulfur in industrial concentrates of galena by a combination of chlorination and fused - salt electrolysis . Galena could not be satisfactorily electrolyzed in the various media tried ; however , when it was treated with chlorine the resulting lead chloride could be effectively separated electrically into lead and chlorine . An apparatus was designed and constructed to chlorinate galena and to volatilize simultaneously most of the chloridized impurities . By electrolyzing the chlorinated concentrate , a high percentage of lead was recovered . Anodic chlorine was drawn from the cell and was used to chlorinate new feed . In many runs , the recovered metal analyzed from 99.8 to 99.9 percent lead . Lead was also distributed as a chloride in the bath , and a small portion was in the volatile fraction produced during the chlorination step . During a tinuous operation , only 0.1 percent of the total lead was discarded ; 99.9 percent was accounted for in the metal , electrolytic bath , and washed or leached chlorination condensate which was essentially lead chloride . About 95 percent of the sulfur from the galena was recovered as a byproduct of over 90 - percent grade .

"INTRODUCTION Dark soils are commonly believed to be better for agricultural purposes than light-color soils. Much of this feeling may be purely psychological, as many persons have unconsciously acquired the habit of associating richness of soil with color light soils, however, may be just as rich in humus and plant foods as the best of the dark soils. A dis-cussion of the manifold attributes that play an important role in soil technology is beyond the scope of this paper, but the color factor will be considered, as it has a particular bearing on some field experiments using coal-mine waste as a darkening medium.It has been established that dark soils absorb more of the sun's radiation, consequently are maintained at a higher temperature than light soils. This physical principle is applied in our daily lives in the choice of clothing. White clotnes in summer are cooler than dark ones. Conversely, dark clothes in winter are warmer than light-color clothing. A decided advantage of dark soils over light soils is the higher average temperature of the former, resulting in an earlier maturing crop. This advance of the maturing season may range from a few days to a month, depending on such factors as climate, crop, and degree of color of the soil. It has been reported that in parts of Russia where the growing season is short, perhaps comparable to that in Pennsylvania and. New York, cotton has been grown successfully on soils originally of light color, but darkened with coal, dusts. The growth of cotton is, accordingly, speeded up a full month. 3/"

As has been the case since the early Phoenician traders, the minerals used by modern man come from deposits scattered around the globe. The price received is more and more being set by worldwide supply and demand. Thus the price component in the profit equation:Profits = Material sold (units)x(Price/unit û Cost/unit) is largely determined by others. The recent price history for two of the major metals, copper and iron, are given in Figures 1 and 2, respectively. As can be seen there has been a steady decline in the prices (when expressed in constant dollars) over the 20 years which have lapsed since the first of the International Conferences on Mass Mining, æDesign and Operation of Caving and Sublevel Stoping MinesÆ was held. If one would look back over the entire 20th century this would also be the trend. Cost containment/reduction through efficient, safe and environmentally responsive mining practices is serious business today and will be even more important in the future with increasing mining depths and more stringent regulations. A failure to keep up is expressed very simply as: Profit This, needless to say, is unfavourable for all concerned (the employees, the company, and the country or nation). The mining companies have had to look at ways of reducing the expense part of the profit equation while maintaining safe, environmentally conscious operations. Table 1 summarises the rules for working in todayÆs economy.

An analysis of low-voltage shielded trailing cables is performed to develop a method for calculating the differences in operating costs between shielded and non-shielded cables. Two types of shield constructions are considered (SH-C and SH-D) for the three major underground coal mining methods. Data from laboratory and in-mine testing are presented in addition to an analysis of safety benefits. Recommendations for further investigations are proposed. Example calculations with sensitivity analyses are presented. Recommendations for further investigation include costs impact considerations.

THE UTILIZATION by the Bureau of Mines of infrared and ultraviolet-visible spectrometry in connection with coal research has led to some basic improvements in methods, including a calibration method, a quantitative assessment of infrared spectral energy sources, and the development and perfection of infrared filters and cells. The adoption of a micropipet method to flush organic samples into absorption cells permits the investigation of vapors from organic liquids and the identification of volatile organic compounds. The spectral method has been used to investigate the infrared spectra of metal chelates, the charge-transfer complexing properties of aniline and nitrobenzene, an infrared method for determining the presence of methane in coal-mine air that has been adopted for use in enforcing the regulations of the National Coal Mine Safety Act, and atmospheric pollution including smog and odor-causing oxidation and decomposition of organic materials. Correlation of spectra and structure of organic compounds, particularly aromatics, was studied.

The Bushveld Complex is economically significant and strategically important to South Africa, thus it is imperative that optimal extraction of platinum group metal (PGM) resources on the Bushveld Complex is achieved. Optimal extraction broadly requires that the maximum amount of ore is extracted by excavating and hauling the minimum amount of waste in the shortest possible time, at the least cost, and in the safest and most environmentally acceptable manner. In open-pit mine planning this entails among other things, minimizing the waste stripping ratio, whereas in underground mine planning it includes minimizing the metres of waste development. In conventional mining, the main development that is in waste or partly in waste and defines the mining grid pattern includes levels and raises. It was prudent to consider optimizing level and raise spacing in conventional mining because the method is a prevalent mining method on the Bushveld Complex accounting for nearly 70% of platinum production.
