THE Portland Cement Association was organized more than a third of a century ago by a group of cement manufacturers, to do cooperatively the educational and research work needed to ensure proper use of their product. Specifically, the Association has a threefold purpose: (1) to search out facts to ensure the best possible service from concrete; (2) to give the widest possible circulation to facts affecting the use of concrete; (3) to urge practical application of those facts on actual building projects. An organization of technically trained men conducts many research projects in the Association laboratories, interprets their findings and applies them practically in the field. The net effect of this work has been to improve the design and prolong the life of roads, bridges, industrial, commercial and public buildings, homes, farm structures and concrete products. The results of this technical research and experimentation are made available to the entire construction industry through bulletins and reports. Information is also released to the general public through newspapers, magazines and Association publications. In addition to a technical staff in the general office in Chicago, the Association has district offices in 22 cities. Field engineers cover 37 states, the District of Columbia and British Columbia, to give service to users of Portland cement. ACCIDENT PREVENTION During the early part of the century, there began a complete transformation in the processes of manufacturing cement. Electricity, with its attendant hazards, was beginning to replace steam; huge rotary kilns and tube mills were being substituted for the vertical kiln and "coffee grinder" mill. Only a few far-sighted leaders realized the import of these innovations, and they also recognized the fact that workmen must be protected against the hazards of the new machinery. By their sincerity and firm purpose they infused into the whole industry the concept of industry's responsibility for safeguarding employees. The data given in the paper were collected to furnish an idea of the amount required in various operations of bituminous mining to produce a ton of coal, the plants selected being well-managed ones. With these are included some figures compiled from U. S. Coal Commission's report showing the average amount of labor in various classes of mines. THE information contained in the following paper was collected at the request of the U. S. Coal Commission, and is, published with the permission of that body and of the various companies furnishing the data. For obvious reasons, the names of the companies are not given. No data were gotten from States south of Virginia or west of the Mississippi River. The data about the amount of labor, in man-hours, required in producing a ton of bituminous coal have been collected with the idea of showing what is being done at some well-managed plants, and not to show the average amount required by all mines, which undoubtedly is considerably higher than the average of the figures shown.* Almost all of the figures were supplied by the various companies in reply to a questionnaire; when they were obtained from other sources the company was asked to verify them. On account of the amount of work required, the data were only requested for one or two months for each plant, and the figures represent in each case a month when the car supply was good and the work was practically steady. In the case of most of the West Virginia and Kentucky mines, these conditions were best met in May and June, 1922. The mines for which the figures are given are arranged by states and as to whether the mine operates under union or non-union or open-shop conditions. The union mines listed are generally considered to be as well-managed as are the non-union ones. The production per month in a few cases includes the amount of slate which is loaded and hauled out of the mine, as of course this requires nearly as much labor per ton as does the coal. Since we first agreed to present this talk we have learned that some of you may have been covering ground we intend to discuss: Bob Schechter, Daryl Tweeton, Don Seidel, Herb Burgman; however, the ideas were original when we began, "novel" as in the title of the talk, and whether our results are news or merely corroborative, we feel they point a direction that could be valuable to all. We worked with many of you in the past on using hydrogen peroxide in in-situ uranium leaching. Our talk today is not directly related to peroxide; it is, I hope, illustrative of Du Pont&apos;s interest in providing service to this industry in any way we can. The scouting work we are presenting was stimulated by field inputs: First, ammonium carbonate leaches cause restoration problems, primarily because ammonium ions exchange on clays with calcium. Second, sodium carbonate solutions, especially in South Texas deposits, can cause intolerable swelling of clays. From discussions with Dr. van Olphen, who wrote the book on clay chemistry, we inferred by comparison of the radii of the hydrated ions of the elements in these clay systems, that since potassium had about the same radius as ammonium, and sodium was much larger, potassium occupied a unique position to solve both problems. We are trying to assist the in-situ industry by pointing out new, potentially important directions. But, as with our previous work on sodium silicate to restore permeability, we feel the development phases can generally best be carried out in cooperative programs with companies directly involved with operations. DISCUSSION Test Parameters Now for the details: Our leaching tests were designed to note pressure-drop changes across the ore sample as the uranium was leached. Figure 2 shows the apparatus. The [ ] packed length was 20.5 inches (52 cm) with fifteen hundred grams of ore in the two-inch (5 cm)-diameter bed. Pressure drop was measured by manometer and feed rates were maintained constant with a tubing pump. The samples, from a South Texas leach site, were sealed in "Zip Loc" bags, frozen with "dry ice", crushed (still frozen) through six mesh, and blended before placement into the columns. THERMODYNAMIC calculations indicate that boron is a better deoxidizer than silicon but probably is not quite as effective as aluminum. Boron should, therefore, be readily oxidized out of the open-hearth bath, which implies that it is not recovered in significant concentration from any scrap charged; also that, if added in the ladle, it tends to oxidize out during teeming unless protected by the presence of a. better deoxidizing agent. These conclusions do not apply to liquid cast iron, in which the oxygen content is much lower than in liquid steel. The possibility of conserving certain strategic alloying elements widely used in steelmaking, notably manganeie, chromium and molybdenum, by the use of boron, which in small concentration appears to be extraordinarily effective in promoting hardenability, raises a question as to what extent any boron present in the scrap charged into the open hearth is oxidized out during melting and subsequent refining. This question is significant because the optimum concentration of boron in the finished steel, which is fairly critical, would be very difficult to attain if the boron in the charge were largely retained in the metal. Moreover, unless boron is substantially eliminated in the open-hearth process its use on a large scale would eventually make it impossible to produce boron-free steel except by restricting the charge to virgin material. There is at present, unfortunately, virtually no satisfactory direct evidence to provide an answer to this question; but there are indications from practice that boron is oxidized out in the open hearth in the production of medium or low-carbon steel, although it may be retained if the carbon content remains fairly high; that is, if the oxygen is kept fairly low. In the absence of direct data, it is necessary to rely upon the indications of indirect evidence, the best approach now available being a thermodynamic calculation of the deoxidizing power of boron in liquid steel by the general method used so successfully by Chipman1 in his study of the reactions in the open-hearth process. The thermal data for boron, upon which such a calculation must be based, are reasonably satisfactory; the only quantities not directly determined are the entropy of melting of boron, the activity coefficient of boron in liquid steel, and the activity coefficient of B203 in an open-hearth slag; but these values may be estimated with ample accuracy. The results of this calculation, which is presented later, are given in Table I, together with corresponding data for other deoxidizing elements. "Soil conditioning is one of the main factors in successful application of EPB machines in tunneling projects, which involves changing the characteristics of the ground in order to make it suitable for the tunneling process. Selection of the type of conditioner mainly depends on soil type, properties of the tunnel boring machine, and most importantly geological condition. Proper EPB tunneling and soil conditioning in ground above water table is challenging. This was encountered in Northgate Link Extension Tunneling Project in Seattle, WA. In order to improve the tunneling operation, a novel algae-based encapsulated oil was used as a conditioner and as a result the operation of the TBM was improved significantly. This paper reviews the traditional soil conditioning measures that were adopted in University Link and Northgate Link projects in Seattle, WA and compares the results with results when using the encapsulated oil additive. INTRODUCTION Soil conditioning agents are used in EPB tunneling to transform the excavated soil into a workable paste with the desired hydrological and mechanical properties. Reducing wear, power consumption, friction, adhesion, and improving the face stability and material flow are some of the benefits of using soil conditioners in EPB tunneling. Soil conditioning is performed by injecting foam, polymer, water, and bentonite to the tunnel face, excavation chamber and screw conveyor. Selection of conditioning agent mainly depends on soil type, geological condition (groundwater and soil permeability) and TBM features (injection points, open or closed cutterhead, type of foam generator, etc). The most widely used soil conditioners are foam and polymer and in some cases due to existing conditions, clay dispersion or anti-wear additives are also used (Milligan 2000, Langmaack 2000). Foam. Foam is created by dispersing air in a surfactant solution. A different combination of surfactant type and foam parameters should be used for different soil types. Laboratory tests on virgin soil should be performed to identify the best surfactant and foam parameters for the specific soil type (Langmaack 2000). The foam parameters can be described as follows:"

FOLLOWING the presentation at the annual meet-ing of the paper "Recent Developments in Classi-fication," by A. M. Gaudin and W. L. Remick, the discussion presented below took place: H. N. Spicer : I haven&apos;t been able to study this paper closely, but I would like to ask &apos;Mr. Remick something regarding the work done by the mechanical classifier. The screen test given here would appear to show that the classi-fier did very, very poor work. The 44 per cent efficiency calculated from this equation is much lower than any ordinary operation. Nothing is stated regarding the de-tails. of the operation, the slope of the classifier, the dilu-tion, the speed, and such other factors that influence results. I would also like to know something of the material that was worked. The Manhattan schist that I have seen them digging out of the subways is of a flaky nature, so that in any classifier, you might get the factor of fine flakes floating over. Was the same material used in the hydrotator test? The screen tests vary a whole lot. Mr. Remick: You will notice the Dorr classifier han-dled the circulating load. This classifier naturally was run in closed circuit. I should like to be pardoned for quoting from Mr. Bates&apos; paper of last year on "Classifica-tion in the Witwatersrand Mills." In this report only two efficiencies were given for the so-called straight type Dorr classifier. One was 44.6 per cent and the other 61.6. I don&apos;t know whether or not an average should be taken for the proper performance. I assume that that test was performed under better conditions, yet the efficiencies av-eraged only 53.1 per cent. I am afraid I am taking the words out of Professor Taggart&apos;s mouth, but he has told me that the Dorr classi-fier at Columbia is not the proper size to work with the Hardinge mill with which it is connected. This indicates only the inadvisability of putting commercial sized mat chines in a school laboratory. You cannot, he says, get the proper tonnage from the Hardinge mill to work the Dorr classifier and get the best results. Mr. Bates&apos; results show higher efficiency with the lower capacity. Now, on the other hand, I assume that the classifier described in Mr. Bates&apos; paper was probably run at the proper capacity.. It is a rather puzzling question.

TIIe milling of talc, as is the case with many non-metallic minerals, until recently, has not received adequate technical consideration, for the talc industry has become of importance only within the last decade. At first, talc was used only in the massive form, for foot warmers, griddles, and so on, and milling methods were unnecessary. As the demand for ground talc increased, producers adopted the machinery used in the milling of flour; in fact, many talc mills were rebuilt flour mills. Improvement has been slow, but today several types of grinding and separating machinery are in use; many of them, however, are still inadequate and inefficient. To determine the best methods of milling talc, it is necessary to understand the essential properties a talc must possess to fit it for a particular use. For toilet purposes, whiteness, freedom from lime and grit, fineness of grain, and good "slip" are essential. As a paper filler or coating, the talc must be white, uniform, and fine grained, have a good slip, and be free from grit and iron; freedom from lime is a disputed point. Fibrous talc is supposed to be superior to massive on account of the interlocking of grains in the paper, thus increasing its strength; this point, though, is in doubt. In general, talc for the paper industry need not be of as high quality or as fine grained as that used for toilet purposes. Talc is usually bought by sample, for which reason it is difficult to state the essential properties for use in paint, rubber, roofing, and so on. The adoption of standard screen tests and standard grades by producers is necessary before an accurate basis for manufacturing or selling standards can be established. Off-color talcs might be utilized, as in Germany and Austria, by the establishment of standard grades of colored talcs. The machinery to be used depends on whether the talc is fibrous, foliated, or massive; hard or soft; of uniform or variable grade; pure or impure. In some cases, it is possible to change the mining practice or to utilize different sections of the deposit in order to vary some of these factors, but in many cases these factors are fixed, so the milling must be designed to suit the conditions.

This paper describes the results of testing with colorimetric methods, using "dithizone", soil samples taken over various known copper and zinc deposits covered by glacial till. Variation in results is shown for different depths and types of overburden as well as grade and type of deposit. Limiting factors for the practical application of this work are discussed. The method has proved successful for copper and zinc deposits under clay and fine sand with depths up to at least 30 ft but fails in coarse sand and gravel unless depths are very shallow. Swamps require penetration to the underlying subsoil for sample material. DURING the past few years geochemical testing for traces of heavy metals in water, soil, rock, and vegetation has aroused increasing interest. Various techniques for field and laboratory determinations have been described in the literature, as have some of the results of application. However, little information has been published regarding application to glacial terrain. Over 90 pct of the Canadian Shield is overburdened, resulting in high costs for mineral exploration once the outcropping ore deposits have been found. This has been largely responsible for the widespread application of mining geophysics in Canada, permitting concentration of effort on area or zones considered most favorable. However, geophysical interpretation has its limitations, since at least 90 pct of the structures indicated thereby contain no valuable minerals. A more direct approach is therefore highly desirable. If underlying base metal mineralization can be detected by sampling soil or vegetation at moderate cost this should prove of great help in locating new discoveries or extending known ones. A large proportion of Canadian ore deposits contain appreciable copper or zinc, even where these are not the principal economic metals. Consequently the field of application is a broad one. This paper deals with investigations along these lines with particular emphasis on soil sampling. The problems involved from the start were: 1—Which types of glacial soil, if any, would best lend themselves to testing, and conversely which types might be considered relatively hopeless? 2—Through what depths of overburden could significant mineralization be detected? 3—What sampling techniques would prove economically applicable? This included minimum depth of sample and maximum spacing that could be allowed.

"The production of FeTi intermetallic alloys from mixed oxide precursors using direct electrolytic reduction was studied. Fe203 and Ti02 powders were mixed in appropriate molar ratios, pressed into small pellets, and then heat treated at temperatures in the range 1000-1300°C. The pellet heat treated at 1000°C was electrolyzed in molten CaCh at 950°C, using a graphite crucible as the anode and the oxide pellet as the cathode, at a potential of 3.0 V. The products of the electrolytic reduction of (Fe,Ti) oxide were examined by XRD, SEM and EPMA. It was found mat the (Fe,Ti) oxide was reduced progressively from the outside to the inside of the pellet until the metallic state was achieved.IntroductionFast and energy-efficient technologies for materials production are essential for the sustainable development of society, and such development is supported by advanced technologies. Since the introduction of titanium and titanium alloys in the early 1950s, these materials have, in a relatively short time, become major materials for the steel, aerospace, energy, and chemical industries. Its combination of a high strength-to-weight ratio and excellent mechanical properties and corrosion resistance make titanium the best material for many critical applications [1]. Titanium alloys are now used in demanding applications such as static and rotating gas-turbine engine components. Some of the most critical and highly stressed civilian and military airframe parts are made of titanium alloys. The use of titanium has expanded in recent years to include applications in nuclear power plants, oil-refinery heat-exchangers, marine components and medical prostheses.Ferrotitanium is one of the most widespread and effective ferroalloys. It is also a well-known hydrogen-storage material and will be extensively used in the future because hydrogen is emerging as an eco-friendly energy source [2], Ferrotitanium is an alloy consisting of iron and titanium, with a minimum titanium weight content of 20% and a maximum titanium weight content of 75%, and is manufactured by reduction or melting."

Discussion of the paper of H. M. WARREN, A. S. BIESECEKER and E. J. POWELL, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1916, and printed in Bulletin No. 110, February, 1916, pp. 181 to 193. R.. V. NORRIS, Wilkes-Barre, Pa.-For many years the power requirements of breakers designed in the Anthracite. Region have been based on calculations made from indicator diagrams taken during operation, with various sections of machinery idle; these, while giving reasonably accurate figures, gave no intimation of the peak loads which have been shown so clearly in the paper. The high-speed flywheel for breaker rolls is new and shows a remarkable saving in peak power required, besides eliminating the stalling of the rolls from overload. The figures given are so far in advance of anything previously published that they will undoubtedly be used as a basis for future breaker design. It is to be hoped that the authors will continue this investigation and extend their paper by a description of the motors found best suited for this work. WILLIAM KENT, Montclair, N. J.-I notice on p. 187 reference is made to one of the difficulties being the starting torque, and it is proposed to use roller or ball bearings in order to decrease the high starting torque. I suggest that. before the roller or ball bearings are put in, an investigation be made as to the amount of the starting torque, as shown by wattmeter measurements and as to what the starting torque ought to be, theoretically, according to the energy formula; that is, how much starting torque is required to accelerate the rotating mass in a given number of seconds up to full speed. Having secured this information it may be found the amount to be saved by roller bearings is not very great. If it appears that roller bearings will not greatly decrease the starting torque, the next thing to be done is to have a special design of motor in which there is a field that can be made very strong at the start, by the use of extra poles or other means, and the next thing that may be done is to increase the speed from 10,000 r.p.m. to 25,000, which can be done with wire-wound flywheels, especially if the wires are made of vanadium steel.

The Inglewood Gold Project consists of several titles in and around the Inglewood and Wedderburn Goldfields which were purchased from Strata Mining Corporation (now Excalibur Mining Corporation). The Inglewood goldfield has a historical production of approximately 160 000 tonnes at 23 grams per tonne. The company has reopened and developed the Maxwells reef, picking up a high-grade shoot (Max Shoot) identified and worked by Goldquest et al up until 1994. Production ceased on a low gold price, rapidly reducing vein size and a requirement for further development. Greater Bendigo Gold Mines Ltd (GBM) has undertaken the development and encountered the mineralised vein in an increasing size setting with high grades and the existing mine development has access to a further shoot to the north (Max North Shoot). The Maxwells reef also contains the Woolf shoot south of the Maxwells shaft and an inferred resource of ~20 000 ounces is contained from 60 m below surface. Best intersection 2.9 m at 50 g/t. The Maxwells reef area produced approximately 20 per cent of the Inglewood goldfields production and GBM is preparing to increase its exploration efforts across the rest of the field. A processing plant has been constructed at the Maxwells mine site, which is capable of treating tailings, hard rock and alluvial material utilising gravity recovery. The existing Maxwells tailings have been excavated and treatment commenced. It is intended to produce a sand product from the tailings for resale and to reduce the storage requirements per tonne. Several large water dams constructed by Goldquest in the 1990s are being re-engineered to enable storage of significant tonnages of tailings. A level of surface and underground production is planned for 2008 and this is to be expanded into 2009 and beyond. The long-term future at Inglewood is envisaged as structural repeats at depth below the current workings and a project plan to gain deep access will be prepared on successful drilling results.

The investigation described in this paper deals with the development of high-temperature alloys of the Konel series over a considerable period of time at t,he Research Laboratories of the Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Co. The word &apos;&apos;Konel" has been coined to designate a class of alloys which are essentially nickel-cobalt-iron with other elements added, usually in small quantities. Most of these alloys contain titanium, usually about 2.5 per cent. The main consideration related to strength at high temperatures but the thermionic characteristics of the alloys was also of considerable importance. It is, however, with the mechanical properties at elevated temperatures that we are herein concerned. Much attention has also been devoted to their age-hardening characteristics. There is little need to stress the utilitarian aspect of this subject, as it has been discussed frequently. Alloys exhibiting superior properties at normal or elevated temperatures rapidly find many suitable applications. There may be some question, however, as to what constitutes a "superior alloy," or an alloy that may have good service possibilities at high temperatures. The problem is complex and various means have been employed to predict the useful life that may be expected of a material. In recent years the "creep limitJ&apos; has been used as the best means of evaluation. Such tests necessarily are prolonged and hence collection of data is very slow. In a general survey of many alloys therefore the creep test is not desirable and recourse must be had to much shorter time tests in order more rapidly to select alloys which appear to show promise. For this reason the present survey has been made using the high-temperature tensile test and a bend test developed by Howard Scott.&apos; In the tensile test the conditions have been standardized for all tests, so that values obtained are at least comparable, one alloy with another, although the absolute values recorded merely indicate the mechanical properties at the given temperature under a definite rate of loading.

Abstract-Geochemical background levels have been established for unmineralized sedimentary rocks that are elsewhere the hosts of Carlin-type gold deposits in the Getchell Trend. The Paleozoic rocks in the Winnemucca Quadrangle consist predominantly of the lower Paleozoic siliceous and clastic sequences that were carried eastward along the Roberts Mountains thrust during the Late Devonian and Early Mississippian Antler Orogeny and the late Paleozoic Havallah and Pumpernickel sequences brought along the Golconda thrust eastward during early Mesozoic Sonoma Orogeny. Over 260 rock samples were collected from the Paleozoic sequences. Major and trace elements were determined by instrumental methods best suited for the specific elements. The general geochemical features of the Paleozoic sedimentary rocks are discussed in detail with reference to the data of average abundances of elements in sedimentary rocks. The background and threshold values of certain trace elements in sandstone, shale, and carbonate rock of one formation, as well as back- ground levels for the entire sequence were obtained. The characteristic geochemical features of the Paleozoic rocks in this area include: consistently high Ba and low Au contents (1.1 ppb, 1.5 ppb, 1.1 ppb Au for average sandstone, shale and carbonate, respectively); generally low contents of those elements which may be of environmental concern such as As, Cd, Hg and Pb. Plots of major and trace elements suggest that the majority of the Paleozoic clastic rocks are related to a passive- margin tectonic setting. Samples with gold values higher than threshold are considered to have been affected by hydrothermal alteration related to gold mineralization. Most of these samples generally also have higher values of Sb, Hg, V and/or As. These observations support the use of such elements as pathfinders for gold, although V has not been identified as such before. Ba is not effective for gold exploration in this area due to the generally high background value of Ba, even though it may be an important pathfinder elsewhere.

For the last decade Australia has been the leading exporter of both steam and coking coal. In the ten-year period 1989 - 1998 steam coal exports increased by 93 per cent and metallurgical coal exports increased by 50 per cent. However, profitability of the steam coal sector has been disappointing. The coking coal sector, especially the hard coking coal segment, has fared better but its profitability was more because of its ability to maintain relatively high prices rather than its inherent productivity. Until quite recently the Australian coking coal sector was widely expected to be able to maintain this comfortable state without undue effort for the three major æpartnersÆ; the companies, the State Government and the unions. But coking coal could now be heading down the path followed by steam coal that ends with long-term over-supply and, despite steady improvements in productivity, poor profitability. Steam coal entered the ænewÆ era of long-term over-supply some years ago. Over-supply was due to the rapid increase in production in Indonesia, often from new mines and Australia. AustraliaÆs production rise was underlain by the apparent belief that the best way to lower costs was to increase production. In the first couple of years costs didnÆt fall much but the additional tonnage was sold at lower and lower prices into the spot market. By mid-1998 the difference between the contract price set with Japanese utilities and spot sales was often in excess of $US12 per tonne. Japanese contract prices and tonnages have since fallen significantly. Steam coal has moved from being a product to being a commodity. Any profits are due more to the low Australian dollar rather than inherent mine productivity. Seaborne coking coal trade has been dominated by Australia, Canada and the USA, with the USA becoming less competitive. Unfortunately, when the Queensland capacity expansion was well down the pipeline, the Asian financial crisis occurred and the Japanese economy entered what appears to be a long-term recession. Contract prices fell 18 per cent, tonnages decreased and some mines have been reclassified as supplying lower priced coking coal. The paper analyses past and expected future trends in labour and mine productivity, rail freight and FOB export port cash and total costs of the Australian steam coal and coking coal sectors and discusses the market outlook for Australia. The future economic viability of the industry is analysed and discussed in the light of the rapidly changing global environment.

This study is an investigation on using hydrogen peroxide for tank-leaching of uranium with sulfuric acid. The optimum sulfuric acid concentration was found to be 0.03 mole 11 -&apos;for a 25% pulp density suspension. The order of reaction with respect to sulfuric acid concentration was found to be ns0.75. The best results vith hydrogen peroxide were obtained at a 4.64 molar ratio of 6202 to U in the ore. The order of reaction was found to be zero with respect to hydrogen peroxide concentration. The theoretical maximum rate effect of Hz02 on uranium extraction was derived as Vm = 8.15 x mole &-&apos;min-&apos;. The highest rate experimentally attained was 8.09 x mole kL&apos;min-&apos;. It was found that the uranium extrac- tion was not affected by the pulp density up to the 50% used in this study. However, the final yieldswere significantly higher (over 90%) for leaches carried out in the presence of Hz02 than (less than 90%) for leaches carried out in the absence of H202. The reaction was found to follow a first order course with respect to substrate concentration (pulp density) regardless of the presence of H202. The effect of temperature was more explicit at moderate tempetatures (30 to 55 C) than at lower (10 C) or at higher (70 C) temperatures. At this latter temperature an almost complete extraction was realized even without H202. The apparent activation energies were found to be AEa = 2.68 kJ mole-&apos; in the absence of H202, 0.5 kJ mole-&apos;with Hz02 at 40 C to 70 C. and 4.72 kJ mole-&apos; with Hz02 at 10 C to 40 C. All these activation energy values suggested that the uranium extraction process is diffusion controlled regardless of the presence of H202. Further, the change in activation energy in the presence of Hz02 indicates the possibility of change in the reaction mechanisms at lower and higher temperatures.

In the introduction to a recent paper dealing with, the relationships of magnetite and hematite in the banded iron formations or &quot;jasper bars&quot; of the Western Australian pre-Cambrian(17)t the author made a brief mention of these interesting rocks, of the principal series in which they occur and of a few of the rock and mineral types to be found within them.He drew attention to the essential shnilarity of these Western Australian banded iron formations to those of the pre-Cambrian of such other countries as the United States Lake Superior region, Sweden, South Russia, India, South Africa and Brazil, and gave a brief summary of his views as to the origin of the formations in Western Australia. Furthermore he stated that the banded iron formations have proved of considerable direct economic importance in the goldfields and other&apos; regions of Western Australia, and he referred to the assistance they have provided the field geologist in geological mapping and the determination of geological structures.It is in elaboration of this last statement that the present paper has been written. In the following pages will be found some examples of the use to which the jasper bars have been put in the determination of the geological structure of critical areas in the goldfields of the State.Firstly, however, it may be as well to recapitulate the features of interest in these rocks. The true jasper bars or banded iron formations including the types jaspilite, banded hematite quartzite and banded magnetite quartzite or chert, together with their higher grade metamorphic derivatives such as banded magnetite-gruneri~ quartzites, magnetitegrunerite schists, fayalite ,and hedenbergite bearing handed magnetitegrunerite quartz rocks and&apos; to &apos;a lesser extent magnetite-hypersthene grunerite quartz rocks, are abundant in the older series of the Western Australian pre-Cambrian. They are best developed in the older Greenstone or Kalgoorlie series of the goldfields districts, interbedded with metamorphosed basic lavas, tuffs and sediments. The mineralogy andpetrology of these rocks, the history of their metamorphism and their origin have been discusseq elsewhere in some detail by the author(19), (20). In one of the papers(20) it was clearly demonstrated that in the light of the true facts the old silicified shear zone theory of the origin of the jasper bars is quite untenable and that the formations undoubtedly represent sedimentary horizons as was recently pointed out by McKinstry(14).It has also been shown that banded ferruginous cherts, quartzites and cherty carbonate rocks of much lower metamorphic grade are well developed...

THE coal industry in Alabama, centered in Birmingham, has pioneered coal-beneficiation practice in the United States. The nature of the coal seams and mining methods employed have necessitated use of equipment and methods best adapted to the local conditions. Although all of the 30 or more coal seams now being mined in the state receive beneficiation, only the three most important producers of coking coals, the Pratt, Mary Lee and Black Creek, are discussed in detail. Nature of the seams, washability characteristics and equipment used are given as examples of the extent of work and progress in this field. The coal seams in Alabama are relatively thin and pitching, making mining difficult and expensive. Most of them are characterized by thin partings of rock or shale in the seam itself, as well as laminations of bone and rash. Mechanical mining methods have increased the occlusions from roof and floor to such an extent that nearly all the coal mined in the state must receive some treatment before it can be put on the market. During the year ending Sept. 30, 1943,1 18,129,792 tons of coal were mined in the state and 14,364,177 tons, or 79.2 per cent, received treatment. Excluding from the total the 1,223,014 tons produced by small wagon mines and the hand-picked lump coal, the amount receiving beneficiation would be more than 90.00 per cent. This is, by far, greater than in any other coal-producing state. The earliest record of coal beneficiation in Alabama was the installation in 1890 of an experimental Lung washer by Alexander Cunningham, for the Sloss Iron and Steel Co. at its blast furnace in Birmingham .2 In 1894 the Jeffrey Manufacturing Co. introduced the English Robinson washer, a combination of a hydraulic classifier and centrifugal machine. Erskine Ramsay, who has contributed so much to the coal industry, saw its possibilities as well as its mechanical defects and soon had his inventive mind at work. He added a sludge tank of his own design, and many Robinson-Ramsay washers were installed in Alabama and other states. The Stewart jig appeared in 1900, followed by the Montgomery jig in 1910 and both have found extensive use. Increased interest in this field led to new designs, such as the American, Elmore; Burke and Faust. The first Baum-type Norton jig was operated in 1930 and within the last five years six large installations of this type have been made by the McNally-Pittsburg, Jeffrey and Link-Belt Companies. Wet-washing tables were introduced in 1922 but not extensively used until recently. The two most popular types are the Deister-Overstrom and Deister Plat-O. The coal-cleaning equipment used in Alabama has been relatively simple, yet efficient, but as the amount of impurities in the raw coal has been increased by mechanical mining and labor costs have become higher, much interest has been shown in sand cones, froth flotation and

The information contained in the following paper was collected at the request of the U. S. Coal Commission, and is published with the permission of that body and of the various companies furnishing the data. For obvious reasons, the names of the companies are not given. No data were obtained from states south of Virginia or west of the Mississippi River. The data about the amount of labor, in man-hours, required in producing a ton of bituminous coal have been collected with the idea of showing what is being done at some well-managed plants, and not to show the average amount required by all mines, which undoubtedly is considerably higher than the average of the figures shown.* Almost all of the figures were supplied by the various companies in reply to a questionnaire; when they were obtained from other sources the company was asked to verify them. On account of the amount of work required, the data were only requested for one or two months for each plant, and the figures represent in each case a month when the car supply was good and the work was practically steady. In the case of most of the West Virginia and Kentucky mines, these conditions were best met in May and June, 1922. The mines for which the figures are given are arranged by states and as to whether the mine operates under union or non-union or open-shop conditions. The union mines listed are generally considered to be as well-managed as are the non-union ones. The production per month in a few cases includes the amount of slate which is loaded and hauled out of the mine, as of course this requires nearly as much labor per ton as does the coal. These cases are noted. The number of days worked includes only the total time in which the tipple operated; not the number of days on which the mines operated. This makes the output per day appear slightly higher than it should be in

SULPHUR is always present in mineral coal of every variety. In the oxidized state it may exist as sulphuric acid in combination with a base. In the unoxidized state it exists in combination with iron as bisulphide of iron. It is also supposed by some chemists to exist in unknown combinations with the organic elements of the coal. This supposition requires the demonstration as a fact that certain coals yield more sulphur than what may exist in a free state, or what belongs to recognized combinations, not only with the accompanying iron but with other inorganic bases abundantly occurring in coals, but which unfortunately are very rarely estimated. This practically as well as theoretically important question it is at present impossible to decide, simply for want of available thorough ultimate coal analyses including the ash. Such analyses, at the best imperfect, are laborious and intricate, and therefore seldom made, the much simpler proximate analyses, so-called, being resorted to by most chemists for technical purposes, and commonly substituted for more scientific work even in the laboratories of government surveys. And it is unfortunate enough that few ultimate analyses are extended to the composition of the ash, much less to its relation to the original constitution of the coal. Sulphur chiefly occurs in most coals in the form of yellow pyrites (pyrite) and white pyrites (marcasite), both minerals, characterized by differences in crystalline form and in physical properties as well as in color, but having the same chemical composition (FeS2). No coal is entirely free from one or both of these dimorphous forms of bisulphide of iron. It may be disseminated through the mass so as to be invisible, in plates or scales between the laminæ of the coal, or in conspicuous segregations or nodules, sometimes of considerable dimensions. Coals greatly differ as to the proportion of sulphur which they contain. They also differ as to the relative proportion in which its several forms of combination occur. Such qualitative and quantitative disparities are scarcely, if at all, more marked in separate coal seams of a uniform type than in different parts of one and the same coal seam, whether it be considered locally as constituted of several

Respirable dust produced during blasting operations in underground mines exhibits both diffusion and convection properties of the airflow. However, the application of the mathematical model presently used to calculate the change in time in the concentration of blasting pollutants is mostly limited to a single drift and cannot be easily utilized for blasts taking place in stopes. This paper discusses an analytical solution based on considerations that enable us to reliably identify the initial condition. Such an approach may be used for any blasting area regardless of its position, its size, or the ventilation system in use during blasting. In addition, a test procedure using field data is established to determined those parameters not measured directly. As well, equations are derived to find the diffusion coefficient, and the position and size of a dust source from the field data. Mathematical considerations The convection-diffusion problem, for a one-dimensional case, is described by the following partial differential equation (PDE): ct. = Dcxx - Vcx + source - sink(1) where C = the concentration of a pollutant T = time V = the mean air velocity in x-direction D = the diffusion coefficient X = distance away from the pollutant source source = any additional pollutant source specified by an initial value problem sink = decay of a pollutant inside the region specified by the boundary conditions. To derive a mathematical model, the following assumptions are made: •At time zero (t = 0), the dust source is at point x = 0 of an infinite drift. •The problem is considered a one-dimensional case. •The mean velocity of air and the diffusion coefficient are constant. •There is no source or sink of dust other than specified at point x = 0 and time t = 0.
