"A t remote locations typical of mines and associated ore processing plants, diesel electric generators are ideally suited for power plants due to their inherent operating flexibility, efficiency and reliability. In recent years rapid escalation in fuel and related transportation costs has made extensive waste heat recovery from generating sets financially attractive to a much greater extent than previously.The paper outlines key considerations during planning and design stages for utilizing the various waste heat sources available to best advantage. Based on two /980 mining projects built in the Canadian Arctic, data is presented on potential operating and capital costs savings. A review of heat balances, engineering flow diagrams and major equipment selections for process and building heating systems utilizing waste heat is included.IntroductionResource projects increasingly occur in remote areas requiring on-site self sufficiency in electrical power generation. For such projects, the low- or medium-speed turbo-charged diesel engine is very often the preferred choice as a prime mover for the generating sets . It is inherently reliable, has good response to load changes and has comparatively high fuel efficiency over a wide load range . From a project execution standpoint, It is capital cost- competitive and procurement lead-time normally ' fits ' within tight schedule constraints. In addition, its potential for waste heat recovery is excellent , particularly in northern climates where space heating requirements are usually substantial, and also where there a re requirements for heat for process and plant services.The high cost of fuel , with add-on transportation costs , provides a major incentive to fully exploit the available waste heat recovery potential o f such installations.As a result of the rapid escalation in the price of petroleum products following major crude oil price increases in 1973 and again in 1978-79, liquid petroleum fuels, having the desirable properties of comparatively high heat content and transportability, are no longer 'cheap' commodities and have become so valuable that industry has widely undertaken serious conservation efforts.Currently, it appears that petroleum cost trends of the 1970s may not continue, at least in the near term, and that we may see somewhat reduced energy costs for a time. In the longer term , and certainly within the life spa n of major projects, however, it is generally believed to be inevitable that these fuels will be increasingly expensive . Energy costs are today a major operating cost for remote minerals processing plants and will remain so for the foreseeable future.In order to meet the economic challenge posed by high energy costs, future projects should be thoughtfully planned from the outset with the goal of minimizing energy requirements and maximizing the use of waste heat recovery to meet such requirements. There is also considerable potential for significant energy savings by retrofitting of existing installations."

This paper presents a method for calculating the producing rate of a well as a function of time following steam stimulation. The calculations have proved valuable in both selecting wells for stimulation and in determining optimum treatment sizes. The heat transfer model accounts for cooling of the oil sand by both vertical and radial conduction. Heat losses for any number of productive sands separated by unproductive rock are calculated for the injection. shut-in and production phases of the cycle. The oil rate increase caused by viscosity reduction due to heating is calculated by steady-state radial flow equations. The response of successive cycles of steam injection can also be calculated with this method. Excellent agreement is shown between calculated and actual field results. Also included are the results of several reservoir and process variable studies. The method is best suited for wells producing from a multiplicity of thin sands where the bulk of the stimulated production comes from the unheated reservoir. The flow equations used neglect gravity drainage and saturation changes within the heated region. INTRODUCTION This paper presents a calculation method which can be used to predict the field performance of the cyclic steam stimulation process. The calculation method enables the engineer to select reservoirs that have favorable characteristics for steam stimulation and permits him to determine how much steam must be injected to achieve favorable stimulation. While the calculation represents a considerable simplification of physical reality and the results are subject to numerous assumptions which must be made about the reservoir, it has been found that realistic calculations can be made of individual well performance following steam injection. The duration of the stimulation effect will depend primarily on the rate at which the heated oil sand cools which, in turn, is determined by the rate at which energy is removed from the formation with the produced fluids and conducted from the heated oil sand to unproductive rock. A complete mathematical solution to this problem is a formidable task, and finite difference techniques would undoubtedly have to be used. The calculation method pre- sented here utilizes analytic solutions of simple related heat transfer and fluid flow problems. The method is sufficiently simplified that it can be used as a hand calculation, although the calculations are somewhat lengthy and laborious. For that reason, the analysis was programmed for an IBM 7044 digital computer. Well responses observed at the Quiriquire field in eastern Venezuela&apos; have been matched using this program after making suitable approximations for reservoir and wellbore conditions. One of the most valuable uses of this calculation method is to assess the effect of reservoir and proc-cess variables on the stimulation response. This paper contains results of several studies made of key reservoir and process parameters. Among the most important of these is the influence of prior wellbore permeability damage. If a well is severely damaged prior to stimulation, a higher stimulation response will be observed than if it is undamaged. If a portion of this damage is removed, a permanent rate improvement will occur. THEORY I)ES(:KJJ&apos;TION OF CALCULATION METHOD The process of cyclic steam stimulation is essentially one of reducing oil viscosity around the wellbore by heating for a limited distance out into the formation through the injection of steam. Suitable modifications of the calculation technique presented here can be made so that stimulation of wells by hot gas injection or in situ combustion can also be calculated. A schematic drawing of the heat transfer and fluid flow considerations included in the calculation method is shown in Fig. 1. In brief, the calculation assumes that the oil sand is uniformly and radially invaded by injected steam. For wells producing from several sands, each sand is assumed to be invaded to the same distance radially. In calculating the radius heated rn energy losses from the wellbore and conduction to impermeable rock adjacent to the producing sands are taken into account. After steam injection is stopped, heat conduction continues and oil sands with r < ra cool as previously unheated shale and oil sand at r > r, begin to warm. The effect of warming of oil sand out beyond r, has little effect on the oil production rate compared to the effect of cooling of the oil sand nearer the wellbore than ra. Thus, in computing the oil production rate, an idealized step function temperature distribution in the reservoir is assumed where the original temperature exists for r > rn and where an average elevated temperature exists for r < rn. The successful selection of a slurry pump depends on the accuracy and completeness of the information provided for the application. Inaccurate or incomplete information can result in incorrect pump selection and / or operational problems. Some information is more critical to the selection process than other information. A full description of the slurry (liquid -solid mixture) including the particle size distribution and maximum concentration, the flow, head and NPSH requirements are most important for successful slurry pump selection and operation. Common problems resulting from improper slurry pump selection will be discussed to illustrate the need for correct selection requirements.

A table that greatly simplifies determination of metastable transitions in mass spectra has been prepared. All the mathematically possible metastable transitions of any compound whose molecular weight lies between 26 and 150 can be determined from the table without calculation. The method of utilizing the table is described, using selected peaks from the spectrum of normal butane for illustration. In the mass spectrometer, ions are formed in the isatron and accelerated through a series of slits. Most of these ions reach the collector without further change, but a few dissociate in transit to form new ions. These ions appear in the mass spectrum at neither the mass--to-charge ratio (m/e) of the original ion nor that of the new ion. The Bureau of Mines developed computerized mathematical models to estimate the economic availability of Mesabi Range taconite concentrates; these are a quality model, a cost model, and an economic availability model. The quality model evaluates metallurgical test data; the cost model determines iron unit cost from mining and processing cost data; and the economic availability model determines quantity from geologic and ore quality data. By correlating all of the physical resource quality factors and dimensional characteristics with the economic cost factors associated with producing iron ore pellets, these three models combine to establish a final relation between iron ore reserve quantities and iron unit cost.

THE art of metallography is mature and the forms in which various micro-constituents appear are well known. Investigations almost without end have disclosed the importance of the exact manner of distribution of phases on the physical properties and usefulness of an alloy. Surprisingly, however, relatively little attention has been paid to the forces that are responsible for the particular and varied spatial arrangements of grains and phases that are observed. Like the anatomist, the metallurgist has been more concerned with form and function than with origins. In this paper it is proposed to develop the simple concept that many microstructures result from an attempted approach to equilibrium between phase and grain interfaces whose surface tensions geometrically balance each other at the points and along the lines where they meet. From this follows a number of principles which may prove to be of interest to the metallographer and of practical use in explaining failures and in designing alloys for particular service. In general, the discussion will be limited to structures obtained after full annealing. The simple principles do not apply to structures resulting from Widmanstatten mechanisms in precipitation, or to other structures not in local equilibrium and in which lattice coherency is a determining factor. INTERFACIAL TENSION Much has been written by physical chemists about the free energy of surfaces, which manifests itself as a measurable surface tension. Two- and three-phase interfaces in fluids seek a condition of minimum energy and approach a geometrical configuration in which the various forces are in vectorial balance.* Measurement of the angles established between the interfaces when in equilibrium provides a quantitative value for the relative value of the surface forces involved. The case of two fluids meeting at the surface of a solid (of great importance in connection with the flotation of minerals) has often been studied, but there have been few investigations of the equally definite interface between two or more crystals of a single solid phase, or the more complex cases where crystal grains of more than one phase are involved. The principles are best illustrated by considering first the case of two and three immiscible liquids. If, as in Fig I, a liquid, 2, is dropped into a less dense liquid, I, it will form a sphere-if gravity and viscosity can be ignored-for in this shape the interface has the smallest possible area. If these two phases should together encounter a third phase in which they are both immiscible, the geometry will change to become that which gives the lowest total energy for all three interfaces. "One approach to making new technology available is to demonstrate its value under full-scale operating conditions. Studies were undertaken to assess the feasibility of this approach to introducing a longwall mining system to the western Canadian coalfields.The longwall method of mining coal is described, world and Canadian usage is reviewed, and the merits of the system in comparison 10 other coal mining methods are discussed.The rationale for a longwall demonstration in western Canada is presented, along with a proposed organization for the design, operation and dissemination of the findings from such a trial. The factors which must be considered in the design of the demonstration, and in the assessment of a potential site are highlighted. It is concluded that a demonstration of this technology is both timely and essential to prepare the way for the western Canadian coal industry of future prospects for coal.IntroductionFor many years CANMET has encouraged research work organized on a cooperative basis. This requires that a working consensus must be negotiated by researchers and operators at the beginning of the project and continuously refined as work proceeds. The result is usually a more relevant selection of research problems, improved direct ion and con duct of experiment al work and often a validation phase in which research concepts are tested in an opera ting environment. All this tends to narrow the gap between obtaining research results and applying them.Even under the best of circumstances cooperative projects require a good deal of coordination and enthusiasm to maintain focus and the pace of work. The working perspective of a research scientist in a government laboratory is substantially different from that of a mine operator at a producing mine, and a common ground must be found. This is difficult to do and cooperative projects typically evolve over several years as experimental results progressively define the potential solutions to mining problems."

The Goldstrike Mine is in Eureka County, Nevada, approximately 23 miles northwest of the town of Carlin. The mine is at the north end of the Tuscarora Spur of the Tuscarora mountains at elevations of 5,300 feet to 5,950 feet. It is part of the Bluestar/Goldstrike subdistrict of the Carlin Trend of sediment hosted, disseminated gold deposits. The Carlin trend comprises over 15 major gold deposits with production, reserves and geological resources of approximately 50 million ounces of gold (Fig. 1). In the Bluestar/Goldstrike subdistrict, there are four major deposits; Post, Betze, Bluestar, and Genesis, plus numerous smaller deposits (Fig. 2). Betze is located on property controlled by Barrick Goldstrike Mines; Bluestar and Genesis on Newmont Gold property; and Post on both Barrick and Newmont property.

Efficiently controlling foam/froth within mineral processing continues to pose a challenge to the mining sector. The foaming characteristics of aqueous solutions for two-phase systems of air/liquid are well-studied with theories and mechanisms proposed to describe and predict foam formation and stability. The types and structures of reagents that either promote or prevent foaming/froth formation and stability are well-defined in these studies and practiced across various applications. Three-phase systems of air/liquid/solid, such as froth from mineral slurries, however, pose a challenge with the presence of a large quantity of relatively fine mineral particles. Theories and mechanisms that rationalise the effects of chemical additives as a defoamer or foaming agent in aqueous can be applied as a general rule, but do not provide the most effective solution for mineral slurry systems. Silicone-based defoamers, particularly their O/W emulsions, have been widely and successfully used at various stages of mineral processing to efficiently control the mineral slurry foaming properties. However, their foaming control ability could be significantly impacted by different processing aids used during the upstream process. In a zinc-rich mineral system, a silicone-based defoamer starts losing the properties necessary to effectively control foaming in the leaching circuit when throughput is increased. In this study, the synergistic defoaming/anti-foaming effects from surfactants and silicone-based defoamers are discussed to effectively control foaming/froth in the zinc leaching circuit, even with lower total defoamer dosage. Improvements during mineral processing can also lead to a cleaner mineral grade by reducing waste.

Demand by precious metals explorationists for cost effective means to target subsurface geologic structures worthy of evaluation by means of drilling has led to the use of the predictor-correlator technique. To locate polarizable targets, the predictor-a localized inhomogeneity in electrical properties-is placed at various locations in the computer-simulated subsurface region, and correlated with the potential distribution observed in the field. The correlation coefficient obtained is assigned to the subsurface location. IP targets are extracted by calculating a second correlation section based on higher-frequency illumination and subtracting it from the first. The locations of correlation difference correspond to the locations of polarizable mineralization.

HENRY MARION HOWE, in whose memory we are gathered together, was one of the great thinkers who develop from time to time to whom is given the rare gift of synthesis. Analysis is given to few, but synthesis, the ability to show the relation of all parts to each other and thus to give a clear picture of the whole, is reserved for the very few. Analysis can be achieved by honesty, intelligence, and industry, but synthesis is only given to genius Professor Howe&apos;s crowning achievement is the picture of the whole iron-carbon series shown in Fig. I, which places steel, malleable, gray iron, mottled and chilled irons in their proper relation to each other and shows the essential unity of the series. Perhaps his best statement of the case is found on page go of the Metallography of Steel and Cast Iron in these words: "Each member of the gray cast-iron series consists of the metallic matrix approximately equivalent to that member of the steel-white-cast-iron series to which it corresponds in percentage of combined carbon with its continuity broken up-by masses of graphite . . . " Apparently he had taken considerable interest in this idea around the turn of the century, for he refers to a discussion at the Franklin Institute in 1900 in which he said: "Though many others had probably conceived this relation between the steels and cast irons, it was here enunciated for the first time, so far as I know. It was received with great incredulity." The concept was explained in some detail in a paper on &apos;The Constitution of Cast Iron" presented before the A.S.T.M. in 1902 when Professor Howe was retiring president of that young society. In the discussion Dr. Sauveur stated that he was "very well acquainted with Professor Howe&apos;s theory of the constitution of cast iron," and went on to say that while he "shared it to the fullest extent, some foundrymen . . . claim cast iron is a metal entirely different from steel . . . that steel and cast iron have very little in common, and that therefore the knowledge gained in the study of steel is of little or no value in the study of cast iron." Dr. Moldenke, in discussing the same paper, said he had been working on the same theory for 12 years but he laid no claim to publication. Discussing the difference in the micro- structure of the metallic matrix, Professor Howe pointed out that "such minor struc- tural differences are indeed to be expected, because of the difference in the conditions under which these constituents are generated. "One difference in these conditions is that the steel of most micrographs has been either forged or at least treated thermally in such a way as to give a new structure radically different from that which formed during the initial solidification, whereas the cast irons have not. As new ideas are formulated and technological advances are developed in the field of industrial minerals, the classroom still exists as a student&apos;s primary source of information. This opportunity to give today&apos;s students the benefit of modern developements has not been utilized to its utmost potential.

For permanent structure underground, where rock is not competent, support usually consists of concrete or reinforced concrete. However, temporary supports in the form of timber or steel are often needed during construc-tion. Although the history of rock bolting is relatively short—50 years— their use has become widespread in general engineering construction as well as mining. This profusely illustrated and detailed study covers a broad range in the field of rock belting: from the behavior of rock and bolts including rock properties, masses, and structure; mathematical formulae for rock bolt applications; through analysis of various operations and descriptions of the bolts themselves. Rock construction is one of the oldest of the engineering arts and its origin is lost in antiquity. From the days when early man decided that he wanted to improve the natural caves which he was using for shelter and protection or made a river crossing by placing rocks to form a ford or causeway, we have had structures made of rock. It is not too much to say that rock in situ as a structural material forms part of every major engineering undertaking. Rock bolting is one means whereby the inherently good characteristics of rock in situ are preserved and used to the best advantage and the bad characteristics ameliorated. In many cases the latter are accentuated by construction processes used. Rock bolting, as with other rock construction techniques, is only just beginning to emerge from being an art. Consequently, its theory and practice is still more descriptive than mathematical. ROCK BOLTING In underground excavations, where the rock is not competent, support is provided. For the permanent structure, this generally consists of concrete or reinforced concrete. However, support may be needed during construction before the concrete can be placed, and conventionally this consists of timber or steel support in the form of ribs, struts, and lagging. Alternatively, rock bolts may be used. Although their use dates back over 50 years, it is only in recent years that rock bolts have become widely used, not only in mining but in general engineering construction. A rock bolt is a steel bar which is inserted in a hole drilled in rock. The end away from the rock face has a device which permits it to be firmly an- chored in the hole and the projecting end is fitted with a plate which bears against the rock surface. The bolt is placed in tension between the anchor and the plate, thereby exerting a compressive force on the rock. The essential feature of a rock bolt is that it is placed in tension. This distinguishes it from anchor bars which are grouted into holes in rock, but which are not prestressed. The difference between an anchor bar and a rock bolt when the rock bolt is grouted in is analogous to the difference between the reinforcement in ordinary reinforced concrete and in prestressed reinforced concrete. The view that rock bolts only pin or nail blocks or slabs of rock which are loose to the sounder rock behind them is erroneous. Rock bolts are useful for this purpose and have been so used for a long time. However, the term rock bolting, as used here, means the designed use of rock bolts to reinforce and develop the rock around an excavation into a structural entity which can competently play its part in a structure such as a powerhouse or a mine installation. Rock bolts behave quite differently than steel ribs. They can be installed at the working face directly after blasting and within a short space of time can be exerting a stabilizing pressure on the loosened rock surface. This early installation not only partially restores loosened blocks of rock to their original unloosened positions, but also it prevents the gradual relaxation or loosening of the decompression zone behind the new rock face. In contrast, steel ribs generally use timber blocks, wedges, and lagging between the ribs and the irregular rock surface. The timber is relatively compressible, and loosened blocks of rock must move outwards an appreciable distance before any load builds up on the steel ribs. Also, the ribs may settle as the foot blocks and foundation become compressed. Hence, it may take several days or weeks before the rock has moved sufficiently to make the steel ribs carry an effective load.

One aspect of a program to improve the chances of survival following coal mine disasters is the development of a communications system which will allow surviving miners to make their circumstances known to rescue teams. At present, it appears that an electromagnetic system may be most practical. The development and design of an effective electromagnetic communications link for signalling between mine workings and the surface requires knowledge of pertinent physical properties of the rocks overlying the mine workings and the characteristics of the ambient noise against which a communications signal must be recognized. Knowledge of the overburden electrical transmission properties is useful not only for determining a practical operating transmitter frequency at a given mine, but also for ensuring the best possible electromagnetic coupling for routine or emergency communication purposes. Field studies of the electrical transmission properties of the overburden of coal mines in Colorado, Illinois, and Pennsylvania generally show that a rela- tively uniform and unimodal electrical conductivity distribution exists provided that the region has not been subject to considerable structural or metamorphic deformation such as that observed in the Gary District of West Virginia. Measurements of ambient surface electromagnetic noise levels at several mines in Colorado, Illinois, and West Virginia were taken and analyzed and are presented in the form of amplitude histogram plots both as a function of frequency and time of day. These amplitude histograms may be used in conjunction with overburden resistivity data in implementing an uplink communications beacon system which will yield a specified signal-to-noise ratio at the surface. Numerous C.W. field transmission tests were made in various coal mining environments with use made of either a buried vertical-axis transmitting loop or a short insulated grounded current line. These transmission tests were made from 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz in frequency and at several geographic surface receiving sites. The results of these field measurements show, in general, good agreement with theoretically calculated results. Since the produced surface magnetic field from a buried vertical-axis loop source or the produced surface horizontal electric field from a buried horizontal current line show better agreement with theoretical results, they could be used for beacon location system. One criterion would be in detecting the equatorial and polar null lines of the horizontal electric field component which is normal to the direction of emplacement of a buried transmitting line current source. A second criterion would be in the surface mapping of the maximum in the vertical magnetic field directly over a vertical-axis loop transmitter and the associated null in the vertical magnetic field at a horizontal offset distance which is about 1.4 times the depth of burial of the transmitter. Finally, a third criterion would lie in the surface mapping of the null in the horizontal magnetic field directly over the vertical-axis beacon and the associated maximum in the horizontal magnetic field at an offset distance from the transmitter axis of half the depth of burial of the loop transmitter. In mapping the vertical magnetic field over a buried vertical-axis loop transmitter, the size effect of the transmitter loop must be taken into account when the separation distances between the transmitter and receiving sensor are less than ten times the effective radius of the source loop; increasing the size of the transmitting source relative to the source-receiver separation distance shifts the null in the vertical magnetic field to greater offsets. In mapping either the vertical or horizontal magnetic field over a buried vertical-axis loop transmitter, care should be exercised in ascertaining that measured nulls and maxima are along radials through the axis of the buried source loop. For the main part, coupling experiments show that ambient electromagnetic noise in coal mining districts is less of a problem above 1000 Hertz. But secondary and perhaps undesirable maxima and null phenomena (as well as penetration problems) would occur in many coal mine provinces in the behavior of the surface horizontal magnetic field (over a buried vertical-axis loop transmitter) if transmission frequencies as high as 10 kHertz were used.

Introduction The property of Rouyn Merger Gold Mines, Limited, is in Rouyn and Joannès townships, Western Quebec, seven miles east of the town of Rouyn. Traversing it is the east-west trending Cadillac-Bouzan fault. Diamond drilling in 1944 and 1945 along a shear zone south of the fault indicated an ore deposit lying at the contact between sedimentary and volcanic rocks and dipping approximately 60° to the northwest. In the summer of 1945 it was decided to sink a shaft to investigate the indicated ore zone. In the immediate vicinity of the deposit, bed-rock is overlain by clay beds, in some places as much as 70 feet thick. Consequently, possible shaft sites were limited to those locations where overburden would not be excessive. The most favourable site was about 125 feet to the south of the ore zone as projected vertically from bed-rock to the surface. Accordingly, it was decided to sink the shaft at this point, with an inclination of 60° N. W., paralleling the dip of the ore zone.

Widespread high-calcium limestones in New Mexico region are low -in magnesium, but some units include shale interbeds deleterious for sulfur removal usage. Thick limestones in Mississippian Escabrosa, Lake Valley, and Leadville, Pennsylvanian Madera and Hermosa, Pennsylvanian-Permian Horquilla, Permian Hueco and Capitan, Cretaceous U-Bar, and some Cenozoic travertines are high-calcium units. Significant outcrops are in mountains of southwestern, south-central, central, southeastern and north-central New Mexico, southeastern Arizona, southwestern Colorado, and northwestern Chihuahua. Coal-fired powerplants are mainly in northwestern New Mexico and eastern Arizona, thus transport is mainly by railroad.
