The coal mining industry is now faced with new regulatory requirements that limit the discharge of chlorides into receiving streams. To meet these new regulatory standards for treated mine water, a zero liquid waste approach was developed using advanced treatment technologies. The approach described in this paper will generate clean water for reuse in various energy endeavours or discharge to the environment, with no substantial liquid or solid waste from the treatment process leaving the site.CITATION:Dal-Corobbo, A and Zick, R, 2013. THERE has been much interest recently in the iron ore supply of the Lake Superior district. It may be of interest to this meeting to give some thought to this situation, dealing more particularly with the present great iron ore deposits of this section. Ores from its various iron ranges are the foundation of the tremendous tonnage of steel and iron of all kinds produced in the territory along and adjacent to the Great Lakes, drawing the bulk of its supply from this northwestern ore country. For a number of years estimates have been made of the quantity of available ore. The latest study, by M. C. Lake, chief geologist of the M. A. Hanna Co., is of great interest and brings the estimated tonnage to Jan. 1. 1929.

Although the noble building provided in New York City by Mr. Carnegie for the United Engineering Society has been pushed to about half-completion, the ceremony of laying its corner-stone was not performed until Tuesday afternoon, May 8, 1906. The stone lies just back of the southeast corner of the building, on the north side-of West 39th Street. Among those present were Mr. and Mrs. Carnegie, Miss Whitfield, the sister of Mrs. Carnegie, Ralph W. Pope, Secretary of the Institute of Electrical Engineers, Frederick R. Hutton, Secretary of the. Society of Mechanical Engineers, Rossiter W. Raymond, Secretary of the Institute of Mining Engineers, Charles H. Haswell, the first Chief Engineer of the United States Navy (1836-1851), now in his ninety-seventh year, John Fritz, of the Bethlehem Steel Company, William H. Fletcher, President of the Engineers' Club, E. E. Olcott, President of United Engineering Society, and other interested friends. After an inspection of the interior of the building, the group formed about the corner-stone, which had been draped with the American flag. The exercises were opened by Mr. Olcott, who appropriately welcomed Mr. Carnegie, and briefly expressed the essential value of the building, saying, in part " The societies to be housed underneath this roof have as their aim the pre¬serving and putting in tangible form of the records of scientific accomplishments so as to avoid the repetition of mistakes. The possibility of finding the records of these results all at one center, so near the great Public Library of our city, will be an inestimable advantage to all professions. It is an occasion of no ordinary moment, therefore, when we can welcome Mr. Carnegie and have him lay for us the corner-stone of this great building which his liberality has provided." Mr. Carnegie responded in happy vein, thanking the committee for their greeting, and expressing his pleasure. in being able to do what he had done to further so worthy a cause. This report describes a 4-inch diameter borehole probe which contains a low light level TV camera, magnetic compass, light illumination source, bottom/water detector sensor and a pointing angle sensor. The camera viewing angle is at a right angle to the probe's body. All data from the sensor is multiplexed into the closed circuit camera video for transmission on a single 50 ohm coaxial cable to a surface control unit. Likewise control of the probe's power, zoom lens, focus, panning and aperture is accomplished via a down-link multiplexed on the same cable.

"A need exists for men in oil-field production work who correspond to the mining engineer of a large mining property. Some oil companies prefer to call such an employee a resident geologist, resident engineer, or a petroleum technologist. He should perhaps be more correctly termed a petroleum production engineer. The duty of such a man is to apply his scientific and geologic training practically to oil-field development work.He should be, by education, a mining, civil, or mechanical engineer, with a knowledge of geology and chemistry. Upon completion of his education, such a man should spend several years in the oil-fields. There are two means of gaining proper experience. The first method is to work for an oil company in making a detailed study of each well, collecting data on the history and production, followed by a preparation of good records, from which well logs can be prepared. From the well logs, the geologic cross-sections, peg-models, and structure contour maps can be made. These allow a comparable, detailed study of each well, which is necessary to solve many of the problems. Along with this the engineer should visit drilling wells daily for collection of samples of formations and for a proper study of how they drill. He should form friendly relations with the drillers and production foremen. The second method of gaining proper experience is to start work as a roustabout, pumper, or on the pipe¬line gang, finally working up to a tool-dresser. After three or four years of such work, the engineer may be classed as a petroleum production engineer."

In order to understand the intricate nature of blast damage mechanism and to counter the associated problems, small scale blasting experiments were performed on hydrostone, concrete and granite. This was followed by a 2.4 m x 2.7 m (8'x 9') drifting operation in a quartzite quarry. Interior as well as exterior damage was assessed by different techniques. On the basis of the experimental results, the effect of explosive characteristics on the damage was examined.

(Pittsburg Meeting, March, 1910.) SYSTEMATIC exploitation in the Pittsburg coal-seam on a large scale is simple where the boundaries of the property do not interfere by forcing drainage-, ventilation-, and transport-lines of entries to be run to particular confined fronts. A prime condition governing development is the natural direction of the seam's perpendicular cleavage-planes, giving long lines of smooth faces near together and parallel, bearing about 65° to the left of the meridian and therefore crossing the basins. The gradients of dip into the basins change from 10 per cent at the east rim to practical flatness northwestward across the great coal-fields, a hundred miles wide; the clip being halved in rate at each successive crossing-over of an anticlinal crest. Elevations above sea-level on this transverse section, in scope of present development, differ by 1,000 ft. between low trough and high outcrop. Local irregularities of dip are found, but the main feature to be recognized is the pitch of the basins-the general rise northeastward at 20 ft. per mile, from 100 ft, below sea-level at the low point near the. SW. corner of Pennsylvania to 1,500 ft. and more above tide, and the appearance then, at the surface, of the lower coal-seams carried in the next deeper-lying thousand feet of rock-measures; below which series come the oil- and gas-sands of Oliphant's charted column of strata, reaching down altogether 3,000 ft. below the Pittsburg coal-seam. Because of -the general regularity of occurrence of the coal-seam, the mine-map depicting the courses of economic operation to be undertaken and the steps in controlled exhaustion, need be but a projection of two dimensions on the horizontal plane of space, and this for the most part composed of natural, almost unbroken lines, on the face and on the end of the coal, co-ordinating rectangularly.

Let me open my remarks this morning by stating how we as legislators and as natives of the western coal-producing states feel about our role in becoming one of the major producers of coal-related energy and chemical products is similar to the groom at his shotgun wedding. We are apprehensive, to say the least, as to the ultimate outcome. We do not have complete freedom of choice. It will certainly change our quality of life. We are concerned about the increase in population, but are realistic enough to recognize that we are forced to go through with the marriage. Other alternatives could be worse than the bride. Also, we were aware that this could occur, but we did not plan on it being this sudden. Or, put another way, we have two groups advising us that our choices are cattle or coal, food or fuel, pollution and people or pure air, wheat or gas, clean water or prosperity, noise or solitude.

An analytical technique using computer-based multiple-regression methods was employed to determine the relation between the dust-producing index and inherent rock properties of typical samples from a coal-producing area, one of the aims being to provide a preliminary predictive tool for practical use. Air Pollution Control (APC) ashes from Municipal Solid Waste Incineration (MSWI) plants need to be treated prior to landfilling due mainly to their heavy metals content. This research evaluates the capacity of the APC residues to sequester carbon dioxide, while the ash becomes stabilized for storage. It has the benefit of using two wastes, with no addition of any raw material. APC samples from different MSWI plants were treated by gas/solid accelerated carbonation at different temperatures and carbon dioxide concentrations to evaluate the residue behaviour to the process. The extent of carbonation was evaluated by means of weight gain upon carbonation and by the measurement of the final carbonate content. The APC residues were analyzed before and after the treatment in order to know their composition and their leaching behaviour according to the criteria for the acceptance of wastes at landfills established by the European Council Decision 2003/33/EC.

Social licence to operate is not a new concept for the mining industry, referring to stakeholder approval or acceptance for the activities and impacts of a project, company or industry. It is intangible, dynamic and non-permanent, hence it needs to be earned and then maintained (Thomson and Boutilier, 2014). It has also been argued that social licence extends beyond building approval or acceptance, into engagement for long-term development (Owen and Kemp, 2012).There are many examples where stakeholder opposition – or withdrawal of social licence – have increased capital and operating costs, extended schedules and impacted reputation. At its extreme, the withdrawal of social licence to operate can also contribute to or be the catalyst for mine closure.The key benefit of obtaining a social licence is a reduction of risk. Stakeholder support and advocacy, as well as the implementation of social performance programs that contribute to social licence, can be beneficial in terms of schedule, costs and other benefits.While decisions to close a mine are generally driven by resource availability or economic conditions, the social, economic and environmental legacy remaining post-closure is of importance to many stakeholders. With a number of significant mines now approaching closure within Australia, we are seeing heightened community concern about the economic and social impact of mine closure and the success of land rehabilitation. "The concentrator at Brenda Mines Ltd. treats a copper - molybdenum porphyry ore with current head grades of 0.185% Cu and 0.036% Mo. The consistently low head grades provided the driving force to explore methods of improving plant productivity. Computer based process control was recognized as one means of addressing this objective. Over the period from 1974 to 1982 a control system evolved which now extends to every area of the mill. Control strategies are built on elements of classical, modern and rudimentary expert control. In addition, the control system has often served as a catalyst for other technological developments. The economic returns associated with the system are very significant and it has played an important role in the mine's survival in times of poor metal markets. This paper presents an overview of the computer control system at Brenda.PreambleOne can scarcely avoid picking up a trade magazine or newspaper today without seeing some reference to technology and its potential impact on North American business. _A recurring theme is the need to apply technology to raise our standard of plant automation in the manufacturing and process industries. The general thesis of these articles has been concisely captured in the mutually exclusive set:AUTOMATE or EMIGRATE or EVAPORATEProcess control is one form of automation that has been successfully exploited by various sectors of these industries. In minerals and metal processing the wide scale adoption of process control technology has, until recently, been largely limited to a few companies - most of whom have a history in the area dating back to the early 1970’s. However, there is definitely an increased and much broader interest in process control as a technology which can improve performance, productivity and profit.The economic hardships that were visited on the mining industry in the early 1980's are not easily forgotten. It is the authors' conviction that the mining industry must move to implement proven technology, in particular process control, in order to be well postured for the next (inevitable) down cycle.In pursuing the technical and trade literature, one can discover a number of example of the successful utilization of process control systems in mining and related applications. Normally I would like to begin a talk on photogrammetry by defining the word. However modern technology has changed the science so radically that it bears little resemblance to its original definition. Photogrammetry as defined is a science of taking accurate measurements from photography. Today's photogrammetrist, in addition to working with photography, finds himself working with magnetometers, infrared scanners, radiometers, holo¬graphy, lasers, side-looking radar, digital interfaces, computers and countless other modern space age concepts. The modern photogrammetrist is a pilot, photographer, lab technician, mathematician, geologist, programmer, engineer, physicist, and cartographer. His modern instrumentation and many spheres of activity all have a role in the environmental sciences. For example, the magne¬tometer which measures the earth's magnetic fields is used to locate the earth's ore deposits. The infrared scanner captures the heat emitted from the earth to detect ground waters and thermal pollutions. To elaborate on each of his many endeavors would take volumes rather than this short paper. I have elected therefore to discuss what I feel is his most important role in the environmental sciences - that of cartographer.

MANY factors govern the value of dredging-ground, and much capital can be wasted by the mistaken policy of contracting for the purchase of property and the installation of machinery before a thorough, examination has been made. To the uninitiated investor the presence of gold is generally the criterion,, and very superficial evidence is necessary to satisfy him as to this point. He considers the comprehensive report of a competent engineer as a wasteful extravagance and cannot understand why the engineer requires so much time and money to ascertain the information on which to base his conclusions, when the promoter can furnish him such pleasing and satisfactory data with but little expenditure of time and money. The uninitiated investor will often optimistically risk capital for purchase and equipment, and not until the venture comes to grief does he learn that the conditions are wholly unsuited for dredging. In many instances, a short preliminary examination by a competent engineer would have disclosed these facts. The mere presence of gold is by no means sufficient; some of the other factors necessary to be ascertained in determining the value of placer-ground for dredging-purposes are : (1) character and distribution of gold, and how much can economically be recovered; (2) character of bedding underlying the gravel, its contour, and whether its gold can be recovered by ordinary dredging-operations; (3) area and depths of gravel, surface contour, over-burden, water-level, proportion of fine material and boulders, and the presence of any material which might interfere with the dredging-operations and the recovery of the gold; (4) water-supply, power available, labor, transportation, and supplies, and cost of these ; (5) climatic condi-tions; (6) title to property, cost and royalties, and legal obstacles to carrying on dredging-operations. Metallurgical testing at Cobre Las Cruces prior to production at the mill was done with overburden gossan. Some of that test gossan was a very fine material, wet by the water conditions at the bottom of the pit. When processed and stored wet at the fines material 3000 tonne (3307 tons) silo, this material cemented in a very unusual manner.

A major design problem for upper seam longwall gate roads that are to be constructed in a multi-seam environment is to predict the effects of stress field changes created by interaction. To quantify these effects, case study data were analyzed to develop empirical stress transfer relationships between seams for both longwall and room and pillar mining. Data analysis showed vertical movement and roof characterization in the upper seam to be controlling factors in damage prediction and, therefore, gate road planning and design. CMRR (Coal Mine Roof Rating) was correlated with the multi-seam roof characterization systems previously used. A WINDOWS-based software package named UGLY (Upperseam Gateroad Longwall Stability) was developed. Results from selected case studies were correlated with upper seam stress predictions.

In this report, recommendations are made for programs to develop workable techniques to stop or prevent acid mine drainage formation in those underground coal mines where acid production could take place. These recommendations include development of mine closure technology, development of surface water infiltration control procedures, study of the effect of roof collapse on mine water characteristics, evaluation of the long-term effects of flooding underground mines above drainage, investigation of the effectiveness of section sealing in active mines, development of a simple model for predicting mine water quality and quantity, preparation of a manual on mine drainage abatement procedures, and development of a program to disseminate information on mine drainage abatement to the coal industry. These recommendations are based on an in-depth evaluation of information acquired over years of research on acid mine drainage formation, on numerous laboratory and field studies of methods of preventing or minimizing acid mine drainage formation, and on review of the geological, hydrological, and mineralogical factors involved. This paper is intended to deal merely with the commercial development of some of the principal non-metallic mineral resources in the three prairie provinces- Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta. Coal is not included in this summary. Building Stone First and foremost, mention may be made of the building stone now being produced at Tyndall, Manitoba. This is a mottled limestone and is declared by experts to be one of the finest building stones in America, both as regards durability and appearance. It has been used very extensively both for exterior and interior work, not only in western Canada, but also in the principal cities as far east as Montreal. The stone is the "'Upper Mottled Limestone", which forms the summit of the Trenton (Ordovician) strata in the Lake Winnipeg basin. Quarries are at present being operated at Garson and Tyndall . The area where this stone is known to be available extends in a north and south direction for a distance of three miles, and the main productive ridge is probably about one half mile wide. The outlook for the future of the industry is extremely promising, as the stone is becoming increasingly popular in Eastern Canada, more particularly for interior work.
