This process is performed in the Pernot puddling furnace; it removes from 75 to 80 pel. cent. of the phosphorus, most of the sulphur, and practically all the silicon, from crude iron, in from five to eight minutes. It has been in regular use since March, 1877, and has produced over seventeen thousand tons of mashed metal for the openhearth furnace. During two years, nearly all, and lately, all the open-hearth steel produced in these works has been made from about 5 tons of washed pig and 2 tons of scrap per open-hearth furnace heat. There arc 12 open-hearth furnaces, of which 4 to 9 are running, according to the state of orders. A large amount of highly phosphoric iron from France and Belgium has been also washed and then puddled for parties who have taken, or are expected to take, licenses. The mashing of pig for puddling, however, is not a practice at Krupp's works, because pore pigs are nearly as cheap as impure ones. The author and his assistant, Mr. Laureau, spent, during the last month, three days at Krupp's works, examining this process. They copied out of the office books characteristic analyses and physical tests, some of which are given berewith. They also brought home many samples of pig, cleaned metal, puddle bar, and steel, which they saw treated. Analyses of some of these samples appear in Table IV. As there are no blast furnaces at Essen, the iron is melted in two Bessemer cupolas with fore-hearths; they melt 124 pounds of iron with 1 pound of coke. The metal is run by a spout from the forehearth into an opening at the side of the main door of the washingfurnace. The The washing-furnace.—This is a regenerative gas furnace. It has a Pernot revolving-hearth of 12 feet external diameter and 3 feet depth. (See Plate.) The four regenerator chambers hare 780 cubic feet capacity, which is about the same as the average regenerator capacity of open-hearth steel furnaces of equal tonnage. "An acidification circuit was installed and operated at the Agnico-Eagle Silver Division refinery in Cobalt, Ontario, for treating ~300 m3 of a concentrated cyanide waste solution with the purpose of recovering its cyanide and metal values. The acidification circuit was designed from parameters determined experimentally at CANMET. Available refinery equipment was assembled according to a flowsheet developed by Agnico-Eagle Mines. The process produced a regenerated cyanide solution containing >15 g/L of free cyanide, which was used for leaching gold ore at another Agnico- Eagle operation. It was estimated that the value of the recovered cyanide offset the treatment cost. BackgroundThe Silver Division of Agnico-Eagle Mines needed an economic and effective method for disposing of ~300 m3 of a concentrated cyanide waste solution that had remained in the plant after the operation was shut down in 1989. As a result of extensive recycling and evaporation, the solution had become practically saturated with metals, cyanide, thiocyanate, sulphate and other components, and was, therefore, an environmental liability for the company. A partial analysis of the solution is presented in Table 1. Initially, the use of cyanide destruction methods was considered by Agnico-Eagle, but the estimates indicated a considerable cost with no credits to be gained. A research project carried out by CANMET showed that a simple procedure consisting of acidification, filtration and reneutralization was the most attractive option, because it enabled the recovery of a substantial portion of the cyanide. Furthermore, the metals would be recovered in the form of a solid precipitate. The research showed that conventional AVR was not applicable because of excessive cyanide degradation and low HCN volatilization obtained with this particular solution (Riveros et al., 1996). This paper describes the procedure used to treat the concentrated cyanide waste solution and the operating practices of the large-scale acidification circuit run at the Agnico-Eagle refinery."

All the cycle for conversion of natural and reprocessed uranium of ROSATOM’s “TVEL” Fuel Company is concentrated at the Siberian Chemical Plant. Conversion capacities are located on two sites, i.e. the Radiochemical Plant, which refines feedstock, and the Conversion Plant, which produces uranium oxides and uranium hexafluoride. Liquid radioactive waste arising in the process, after pretreatment, is transferred to a dedicated national operator for underground disposal. Environmental strategies pursued by the Fuel Company involve the introduction of process solutions intended to eliminate liquid radioactive waste and convert it into a solid phase. In the 5–7 years coming, work will be performed to refurbish and upgrade conversion facilities of the Siberian Chemical Plant that will principally change its radioactive waste management scheme. This paper describes the current waste management scheme and sets out planned schemes for management of natural and reprocessed uranium waste, which will be implemented in the refurbishment of conversion facilities of the Siberian Chemical Plant. The new technologies for the management of liquid radioactive waste from uranium conversion described in the present paper have an undeniable advantage over the current technology mainly due to significantly less environmental harm.

"There are substantial challenges in the exploration of magnetic materials in the R-TM-X system (R =rare earth, TM= transition metal, X =stabilizing element) where Xis an element which has high vapor pressure, high reactivity, toxicity, or a refractory nature. This research focuses on discovering new phases with high anisotropy and high magnetization through closed diffusion couples inside high purity Fe crucibles. Either vapor-solid reactions or powder metallurgy techniques are then employed to isolate a stoichiometric sample based on a potentially magnetic phase found in the diffusion couple. For this research, X = F, Ca, Sr, Se, Zn, Bi or Cd, TM= Fe, and R = Nd. New ternary phases have been discovered with WDS and EDS, and magnetic transition temperatures have been measured with a SQUID magnetometer and VSM.IntroductionSince the discovery of the RCo5 compounds in the 1960s, rare earth- transition metal (R-TM) magnets have been the main focus of permanent magnetic research over the last five decades. Iron-based magnetic materials were studied next in attempts to avoid the unstable price of cobalt as well as the high price of Sm, the top performer in the RCos and RzC011 series. This hunt eventually led to the discovery of Nd2Fe14B with a theoretical BHmax of 64 MGOe, nearly double that of the previous samarium based magnets. The next few decades were devoted to enhancing the magnetic properties ofNd2Fe14B by the improvement of processing techniques and the additions of alloying elements. The only complete elemental substitution discovered in this system was R1Fe14C, which did not improve magnetic properties. It is probably safe to say that most ternary R-TM-X systems, where Xis any element that may stabilize a ternary phase, have been investigated if they may be prepared by conventional processes such as arc or induction melting. The present study offers a systematic approach to developing a novel diffusion couple technique in which the volatile, reactive or toxic alloying elements are laser welded inside a high purity Fe crucible. This experimental setup will prevent the oxidation of the rare earth element, as well as contain the volatile X element. As the goal of the research was to find new rare earth permanent magnets, only phases which contained greater than 60 wt% Fe were investigated. 247"

"The Copper Canyon property is located in the Galore Creek area of northwestern British Columbia. Porphyry copper-gold mineralization on the property is notable for its high gold content and close spatial relationship with a distinctive suite of high level syenitic and monzonitic intrusions, and pseudoleucite-bearing volcanic country rocks. The style of alteration and mineralization is similar in many respects to the nearby Galore Creek deposits.The current geological resource of 32.4 million tonnes grading 0.75% Cu, 1.17 g/ t Au and 17.1 g/t Ag is insufficient to support a mining operation, but definition of additional reserves combined with improved transportation infrastructure in the region may change this in the future. The climate, topography and proximity to an active glacier indicate that the most likely production scenario is an underground bulk mining operation, with the ore being milled offsite.IntroductionThe property is located at 57°07' North latitude, 131 °21' West longitude, on NTS sheet 104G/ 3W, approximately 160 km northwest of Stewart and 90 km south of Telegraph Creek (Fig. 1). The Galore Creek camp and airstrip are located 6 km to the west. Current access to the property is via helicopter either from Galore Creek, or from the Bronson Creek airstrip 32 km to the south-southeast.The deposit occurs within the Boundary Ranges of the Coast Mountains, on the north side of the east fork of Galore Creek, which flows northerly into the Scud River and thence westerly to the Stikine River.Topography is rugged. In the deposit area, elevations range from 1130 m to 1750 m. Valley glaciers and permanent snow and ice fields are characteristic of the region at these elevations, and at its southern limit, mineralization is truncated by the East Fork Glacier.The property is entirely above the treeline, and except for areas of moraine cover and talus slopes, outcrop is abundant."

THE small agricultural village of Santa Barbara, in the State of Guanajuato, has been the center of spasmodic tin-mining operations during recent years. The deposits, so far as I know, are unique, and a few brief notes may be of interest. Santa Barbara, about 12 miles west of San Felipe station on the Mexican National Railway, and at an elevation of 2,400 m. above sea-level, is situated in a flat valley extending east and west, and bounded north and south by broken rugged bills rising about 330 m. above the general level of the valley. Tin-mining operations have been conducted-at the Queensland mine, near this village. A small concentrating-mill was erected and attempts were made to smelt the ore in reverberatory furnaces. The country-rock of the district for many miles is rhyolite of great thickness. There are some local variations due to differences in cooling, or subsequent alteration or impregnation; but throughout the whole district the principal constituents of the rocks remain the same, viz., free silica, orthoclase-feldspar and sanidine. The latter is especially marled. The crevice and joints of the rock are frequently filled with calcedonic and opalescent quartz. The ore-formation at the Queensland mine is of an unusual nature, consisting of cracks in the rhyolite which have been filled with clay. This phenomenon is largely developed over a width of from 80 to 100 m., in which the principal fissuring follows an approximate direction of north and south. The av¬erage clip ranges between 70 to 80 degrees. Some of the fissures bold sufficiently true for a time to afford the impression that they are clue to dynamic causes, or earth-movement. In the hot strip mill production, one of the factors that may affect the productivity is the occurrence of failure due to the geometry of the strip at the exit of the rolling mill, because the tip of the strip can turn-down or turn-up. This study had the objective of evaluating the behavior of the strip when leaving the working rolls, through numerical simulation, aiming to know the influences of the main variables that govern the formation of the turn-down. The methodology consisted in performing the computational simulation of the strip mill and to vary the operational and geometric parameters that could influence the process. The results showed that the rolling of hot strips of HSLA material with final thickness varying between of 3 to 6 mm and a reduction of 6.6% to 11.0% in the last stand of a hot strip mill, tends to bend towards the roll with larger diameter, higher friction coefficient , higher temperature and lower limit of material flow. It was observed that the variation in diameter is the main factor that contributes to the formation of the curvature of the front-end of strip. Based on these results, several measures were implemented in the industrial line, with a significant reduction in the occurrence of turn-down.

The ability to achieve high situation awareness (SA) in the face of this data overload is a key challenge for effective decision making and information exploitation. Incidents that result in loss of revenue and even life, and compromise safety that are attributed to human error are often the result of system designs that overload human cognitive capabilities. This paper focuses on defining SA as it relates to mining operations and presents methods for improving SA through a scientific approach for electric shovel operator user interface development.

Lithium is anticipated to be a key, strategic material in the clean tech- nology economy. The majority of lithium reserves are contained in continental brines and sea water (>60%). Currently the most economical approach to recover lithium from such resources is through selective adsorption. Spinel type lithium manganese oxide and lithium titanium oxide have demonstrated to be excellent candidate materials (after de-lithiation). However, due to the small size of the powders, they have limited industrial application and require immobilization. In this work, we examine the application of novel manganese oxide nanowire composites for the extraction of lithium from dilute solutions. Manganese oxide nanowires were synthesized and simultaneously immobilized on diatomaceous earth via hydrothermal method. Lithium manganese oxide were then formed by solid-state reaction, de-lithiated and tested for lithium ion adsorption.

In mineral processing plants it is important to estimate rock composition, size and grindability to improve control of the grinding process. It is well known that variation in ore grindability and size distribution directly affects mills power consumption and throughput. This paper extends a general machine vision approach for on-line estimation of rock mixture composition using color information. Our proposed rock lithological recognition method requires the following steps: division of each image into sub-images, color feature extraction using the Binary Quaternion-Moment-Preserving thresholding technique (BQMP) and support vector machines (SVM) for classification. The BQMP thresholding technique splits the image in two and chooses representatives of each half using the histogram as features. The statistical parameters of the color data can be expressed using the quaternion moments into the representatives. This method can be recursively applied to the sub-images, obtaining 5x2n features in n iterations. Once the feature vector has been computed, each vector is assigned to one of three classes using a classifier. The method was tested on a database containing 20480 sub-images (64x43 pixels) of five ore types as follows: massive sulphide (MS), disseminated sulphide (DS), net textured (NT), gabbro (G), and peridotite (P). These ore types were assigned to three grindability classes: soft (MS), medium (DS and NT) and hard (G and P). The database was divided in 2 subsets: 15360 sub-images used for training and cross validation and 5120 sub-images used for test. The classification accuracy was compared with a method previously published based on a mixture of principal components analysis (PCA) for color, and wavelet texture analysis (WTA) for texture feature extraction. WTA-PCA approach reached a 76% accuracy in test while our BQMP method reached 90% of classification accuracy using only color features. Experimental results show that our proposed method yields excellent results compared to previously published results. Micro-flotation tests of spodumene, beryl, quartz and feldspar have been carried out by using CaCl2 and FeCl3 as modifiers and a blending collector of oleic acid and hydroximic acid. CaCl2 shows efficient activation for spodumene when pH is above 11.5, and FeCl3 exhibits a markedly activation and good selectivity for spodumene in the range of pH 4 to 10. The main species of CaCl2 are CaOH+ and Ca(OH)2 when pH is above 11.5, and the main species of FeCl3?6H2O are Fe(OH)+2 and Fe(OH)3 during the pH range of 4 to 10. A selective flotation of spodumene and beryl from pegmatic ore had also been completed while using FeCl3?6H2O as activator and the blending collector. A bulk concentrate containing 1.087% BeO and 4.70% Li2O has also been obtained in the flotation of spodumene and beryl from pegmatic ore assaying 0.097% BeO and 0.45% Li2O, and the recoveries of BeO and Li2O in concentrate are 74.38% and 69.50% respectively.

A table concentrate obtained experimentally by the New Occidental Gold Mines N.L. has unusual interest on account of the presence in it of abundant coated or "black" gold. The concentrate was obtained from ore from the New Cobar mine, Cobar, New South Wales, by feeding the oversize product from a "Dorr Bowl classifier to a Card table.Its assay value was 129 oz. of gold and 52 oz. of silver per ton, yet practically no free gold could be seen on panning.When, however, the concentrate was digested in hydrochloric acid fine rusty gold could be obtained by panning.The following chemical analysis was carried out by the mining company on a similar sample of concentrate.

In the latest AASHTO design specifications, the Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) method is prescribed for the design of retaining walls. However, inconsistencies arise when LRFD is used for retaining wall design versus the traditional Allowable Stress Design (ASD). Required toe embedment and wall loading demand vary greatly when the two design approaches are compared, all else being equal. This is due to application of linear load factors to properties that vary non-linearly in the design. These inherent inconsistencies are further intensified when introducing factors such as layered soil profiles, different wall types, groundwater elevation, and surcharge requirements. When applied correctly, these two design approaches, in theory, should lead the designer to the same result with little discrepancy, as they do with steel structure design. However, the use of the current AASHTO LRFD method for various geostructural retaining wall designs yields contradictory results that suggest existing retaining walls that have been successfully designed and constructed are unstable. Fundamentally, LRFD should be built on reliability-based calibrations; the successful past performance of existing retaining structures designed using ASD suggests that the LRFD approach requires considerable modification. The authors of this paper recommend that the current LRFD load factors be reviewed and revised based on more comprehensive wall performance data and wall type such that the difference between retaining structures designed using LRFD and those designed using ASD is eliminated.

Thallium (Tl) is a highly toxic heavy metal, soluble over a wide pH range. Tl levels may exceed discharge limits in mining-influenced water associated with processing gold, lead, cadmium, zinc, and copper ores. In this work, the effect of sodium permanganate (CARUSOL® C liquid permanganate) on Tl removal from mining wastewater was studied. Factors influencing Tl removal, namely permanganate dosage/demand, coagulant and flocculant use, order of chemical addition, and co-existing metal ions were examined. The results show that permanganate addition is very effective at removing Tl to below target limits and can provide a unique solution for improving wastewater quality and optimizing overall treatment costs. In addition, several on-line monitoring techniques were evaluated for process optimization. The Hach DPD Free Chlorine method was optimal, allowing plant operators to rapidly and easily spot check effluent samples for excess permanganate dose.

The mining industry is at a crossroads. Currently, there is an estimated $25 billion worth of projects around the world that have been stopped as the consequence of a dispute or disagreement with their communities, the government or some other stakeholder. Anglo American chief executive officer Mark Cutifani is one who sees the mining industry in need of change and on Dec. 12, he gave the keynote address for the launch the Kellogg Innovation Network?s Mining Company of the Future Initiative?s Development Partner Framework (DPF). The launch was held at the Ford Foundation building in New York City. The DPF seeks to inspire and support the mining industry to adopt a new way of thinking and a new approach to how it secures, nurtures and revitalizes its social license to operate. Working with a diverse group of people from faith-based organizations, nongovernmental organizations (NGO) and other stakeholders, Cutifani often had the rather uncomfortable position of representing the mining industry in a room full of people who are far from the industry?s biggest fans.

"The permeability of sintering mix is a vital technological property in sintering process. However, it can only be measured by off-line method on samples picked from the production. In order to acquire the properties of sintering mix accurately, on-line measuring of permeability is urgently required. Based on the reflection characteristics of bed permeability on pipe flowing parameters, a new method is presented in this paper for on-line measuring of sintering mix permeability. The measurement can be performed by blowing gas flow in the bed with the measuring pipe. Measuring results are obtained by picking the data on flowing rate and pressure in the pipe. The function of flowing rate to pressure may be certain for samples with the same permeability. Thus, the permeability was determined by contrasting this function to the result of off-line measuring, and the relative coefficient or R2 value was more than 99%.IntroductionThe permeability of sintering mix is a vital technological property in sintering process, which directly determines production and quality of sinter, or even determines whether the sinter production is carried out smoothly [1,3].The permeability have more obvious influence on vertical sintering speed, which is mainly related to air quantity passing through material bed. Under certain inducing capacity and negative pressure, the vertical sintering speed mainly depends on the permeability of sintering mix. Low permeability may make burning through point of sintering move back, and the sinter mix cannot be burnt through. High permeability may make burning through point of sintering move forward, improving production efficiency by increasing the speed of sintering machine [4] Good permeability means a small resistance of fan ,reduction of negative pressure of sintering machine, and full contact between air and sulfide, which can strengthen physical-chemical reaction during sintering process and increase desulphurization rate. In gas well through material layer process, gas-solid desulfurization reaction and gas-solid-liquid heat exchange are completed and hot gas through the combustion zone supplies the sintering process with heat. Finally uniform sintering of the material layer in height and width direction is achieved [5] While high permeability index leads to weak sinter strength, fast sintering speed, short residence time of high temperature region and little liquid phase. Moreover, liquid phase in the fast cooling process is too late to fully crystallize but forming glass phase which is harmful to sinter strength as well. Bad permeability means a big fan resistance and increase of negative pressure of sintering machine, which make the air pass through material layer difficultly. When air and mix contact difficultly, removal of sulfide reduces so that desulfurization is incomplete. Meanwhile, low caking efficiency, slow sintering speed and easily burnt sinter , reduce sinter output. Therefore appropriate permeability of sintering mix is the premise of stable burning through point and satisfactory sinter output and quality."

There has been a steady increase in shiploading capacities in the last 20 years. One of the reasons has been the general increase in ship sizes, with the largest vessels currently around 280,000 DWT in the bulk trades. Obviously, the large vessels can accept loads faster and their economic utilization justifies higher loading rates, up to a point. The high capacity facilities have loading rates far beyond this point. The economic logic of these facilities is based on the fact that for a given annual throughput the capital and operating cost of a single high capacity system is less than that of two smaller systems. Thus, where the projected throughputs are large, there is a great incentive to reduce capital costs by maximizing capacity. Tubarao, in Brazil, designed for a 100 million ton per year throughput with one finger pier and one high capacity berth is a successful demonstration of this approach. In the current state of the art, the high capacity systems have shiploading capacities in the range of 10,000 - 16,000 TPH, for annual throughputs of 20 million tons and larger per loading berth.

"Purification of zinc leachate plays a predominate role in zinc leaching refineries, to produce impurity free cathode sheets. As a part of such purification sequences, copper cementation with zinc dust is the preliminary step, since the presence of copper will preferentially deposit during zinc electro deposition and has the effect of reducing current efficiency. The cake thus produced is being accumulated as an inventory, due to invariable market and leading to space constraints & hazardous ambience. Hence, a project has been taken up for in-house generation of copper sulphate solution through ammonical leach followed by solvent extraction process and utilizing it as an active promoter for zinc sulphide flotation in Hindustan Zinc’s own captive mines. Cold purification cake majorly contains copper (30-40%) along with zinc (10-20%) and cadmium (2%). Confirmation to the above statement, photomicrographs of purification cake also confirmed the major presence of copper in metallic or oxidized form. In present work ammoniacal carbonate leaching of purification cake followed by solvent extraction using diketone based solvent has been studied under the influence of various parameters viz., temperature, agitation, pulp density, ammonia, CO2 dosages, solvent concentration, and impact of w/s zinc on leaching and solvent extraction. Leaching kinetics determined based on shrinking core model. Chemical reaction at unreacted core was found to be the rate controlling step. The estimated activation energy was found to be 24 KJ/mol. Leached copper has been extracted by solvent extraction with a ß diketone based solvent and is stripped with sulfuric acid as concentrated copper sulfate solution. The above established R&D findings are successfully implemented in the Commercial plant with a treatment capacity of two tons of cold purification cake per batch. Till now 500 MT of Purification cake has been treated, and generated 6500 MT of copper sulphate (55 g/l Cu), with final Cu recoveries between 87-90%."

Advances in data science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence are transforming mining and mineral processing, and making them more algorithm intensive. The paradigm is shifting from one of detection and control to one of prediction and optimisation. To build up reliable prediction and optimisation models these steps should be passed: collect, aggregate, cleanse, and process large amounts of complex, structured, and unstructured data as a first stage. Next, the right tools must be used to extract meaningful features from the operational data for the build-up of a prediction model. A grinding circuit is one of the challenging areas in terms of determining its overall efficiency and the prediction of product quality. In a processing plant, some of the KPIs are typically unmeasurable or infrequently measured for real-time application, e.g. ore grindability and grind size. However, these variables are required to calculate the grinding circuit efficiency and to model the operation performance. In this paper, advanced analytic tools have been used to extract one selected KPI (cyclone overall P80 or final grind size) and its relationship with measured variables for an industrial dataset. The results illustrate that the performance of the grinding circuit can be predicted for real-time monitoring by means of measured data.
