Introduction Many tables of nomenclature for igneous rocks have been introduced from time to time, and each has its strong proponents. As a result, any discussion of igneous? rocks is apt to prove confusing unless the names used for these rocks are defined. This ?became so obvious to a discussion group, formed by the members of the Geological Survey of Canada in 1948, that an attempt was made to establish a scheme of nomenclature that could be used by any member mapping anywhere in Canada. The writer was asked to co-ordinate the ideas presented by individuals in the discussion group, to arrange them in tabular form, and, later, to distribute copies of the resultant table to Canadian universities, provincial geological surveys, and some other geological discussion groups. Many useful suggestions and criticisms were received, were studied ?by members? of the original group, and, so far as practicable, were incorporated in the scheme of nomenclature. The result is the table presented here. This nomenclature of igneous rocks is at present being used by most members of the Geological Survey of Canada who are working with igneous rocks, and by some Canadian universities. We hope it will be found useful and be more widely accepted. With this idea in mind, certain principles were adopted in drawing up the nomenclature.

The methodological example that comes from the demolition of the Genoa grain silos, should not been considered as an auto-celebration of a difficult project successfully executed, but should serve as an example of a new generation of demolitions where different technologies, often in competition, come together to obtain the optimal solution of a problem. Dynamite, diamond wire and hydraulic excavators overcame the most impressive building in town, working in very little spaces and on a geotechnically difficult site; moreover, a study on the dynamics and the effects of the impact of the structure, an analysis of the presence of potentially explosive dusts and an extensive vibrometric monitoring supported the design and the development of the operations.

Managing water is a key aspect of mining, whether a site is in water surplus or water deficit. Water in tailings storage facilities (TSFs) needs to be managed carefully to maximise the density of the solids, maximise the re-use of available water and to minimise the risk of water overtopping the spillway in the event of heavy rainfall. Developing a water balance models is a standard method for monitoring the major flows of water around a site. However, models created by specialist consultants are often overly complex and are not suited to being used by process plant personnel after they have been handed over to the mine operator. Models typically offer information on water management at the time that they are created, but then ‘sit on the shelf’ and offer no further insight or value for operating mines. Advisian has developed a customised water balance model for a mine in Sub-Saharan Africa, which can be adapted to other locations, to assist in managing water at the site and in particular to predict the current and future water level and volume in the TSF under various rainfall scenarios. The model was developed using Microsoft Excel and requires no specialist skills to operate. Site personnel enter in daily production, water transfer and rainfall data and then view the output dashboards to observe the current water level and volume, decant rates, licensed water abstraction and water supply versus demand. The output dashboards were developed in close consultation with the client to ensure that all of the relevant key performance indicators were included, from the perspectives of all the key stakeholders. This modelling approach focusses on the needs of the people who will actually use the model to actively manage TSFs with the need to involve the model developer as part of ongoing operations eliminated. In copper Eta plants the optimal current density setpoint depends on the electrolyte composition and temperature. However, conventional plants operate with large standard deviations. A value of 14% with current densities offsets up to ±50% is typical. For worst, during opencircuit or shortcircuit events this variation can be from -100% to +200%. Naturally, energy consumption and copper quality are compromised. Several devices have been successfully employed to reduce set point deviations. Last developments include; Optibar Segmented Intercell Bars, Outotec Electrodes Arranging Method and NTC Selective Electrodeposition Enhancers. This paper researches and compares these technologies. It is shown that short circuits can be effectively reduced in occurrence and magnitude. Moreover, 95% of the electrodes can be forced to operate within ±10% of the set point. The specific energy consumption is reduced from 2,000 KW per Ton to values close to 1,900 KW per Ton.

"Mine monitoring through various sensors is a vital component of successful miner safety and health programs. Data from environmental, geotechnical, infrastructure and other types of sensors are increasingly used to discover and mitigate health and safety concerns in underground mines. In many smaller underground mines, as well as in the new development headings of larger underground mines, leaky feeder communication systems may be the only available means to transport crucial monitoring data. In addition, data transport is increasingly being delivered using Internet Protocol (IP), while older forms of serial communication are being retired. This paper presents the selection, configuration and testing methodologies employed by researchers from the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to integrate commercially available land mobile data radios into an existing leaky feeder communication system to provide IP data transport.IntroductionTo enhance the health and safety of their mining workforce, mine owners and operators are increasingly installing environmental monitoring and control systems in underground mines. Real-time, mine-wide monitoring is becoming a reality with the implementation of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) into the underground mining industry (Zhou et al., 2017). However, not all underground mines, especially smaller mines and new development headings in larger mines, have the information technology infrastructure in place to handle the data transport requirements for the newer Internet Protocol (IP)-based technologies that are part of IIoT.This was the case with a mine in the Western United States. It lacked the infrastructure to perform critical monitoring in remote headings. Therefore, the mine partnered with the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH) Spokane Mining Research Division (SMRD) to develop and evaluate a cost-effective solution for the real-time monitoring of geotechnical conditions in relatively remote sections of the mine. This paper describes SMRD’s solution to leverage the mine’s existing leaky feeder communications system to achieve IP data transport using commercially available land mobile data radios (NIOSH, 2013; Forooshani et al., 2013; Novak, Snyder and Kohler, 2010; Yarkan et al., 2009). The solution, fully evaluated in laboratory and mine environments, requires no modifications to the existing system, is economical, simple to implement, and reliable. It also allows for transition to higher-bandwidth IT networks, such as fiber optic or WiFi, should they become available."

Located 350 km west of Sydney and 20 km outside Orange, NSW, lies the Ridgeway Gold Mine û NewcrestÆs flagship Underground Gold Mine. Key to success at Ridgeway has been the fast tracked development of the 3.8 km, 1 in 5.3 conveyor decline which houses the 850 t/hr conveying system feeding the dedicated Ridgeway Concentrator, built adjacent to the existing Cadia Hill Concentrator. Eroc was contracted to develop the steep conveyor decline, drawing on its personnel and experience from past metalliferous, tunnelling and coal mining projects to complete the ambitious schedule within 12 months. This paper deals with the complexities and experiences in safely delivering what is understood to be one of AustraliaÆs steepest declines of any substantial length in a metalliferous mine.

Deposition velocities play an important role in many fields of engineering and an impressive range of measured data has accumulated in the literature. Numerous workers have addressed the problems that are associated with the prediction of deposition velocity because of its particular relevance to the design of pipelines and pumping stations. However, despite this extensive effort, the calculation of friction heads still requires reference to experimentally based graphs to determine Durand factors and there is still scope for improvement in the prediction of the deposition velocity at different solids concentrations. Equations to characterise the relationship between the Durand factor and the volume concentrations of solids in the slurry are presented. A correlation for the prediction of the deposition velocity is also developed and tested against some of the classical experimental data. The application of predicted values of deposition velocity in assessing the potential for the sanding-up of spiral separators is then described and a case study is presented.

The average man one meets on the street thinks of an explosive as a medium of death and destruction, something unstable which should be given a wide berth, because he knows little or nothing about its use or its stability. Briefly, explosives are compounds that develop very large quantities of heat and gas in an extremely short time and in a small space, thereby exerting enormous pressure upon surrounding bodies, and by the rapid expansion of this highly heated gas are able to perform a considerable amount of useful work. The amount of heat generated and the volume of gas produced by the decomposition of an explosive determines the amount of mechanical work it can do, and the time occupied by its change from solid or liquid condition to gaseous condition determines its shattering effect. Explosives manufactured by reputable people are not extremely dangerous, on the other hand they are quite safe if handled in a proper manner. Furthermore, before an explosive can be placed on the Canadian market a sample must be submitted to the Explosives Division of the Mines Department, who may condemn or permit its manufacture, according to their findings regarding its safety in handling and its stability during storage.

Southern Peru Copper Corporation (SPCC) are currently modernizing the Ilo copper smelter. A single ISASMELT furnace will start smelting 1,200,000 tonnes per year of concentrate during the second half of 2006. The existing Peirce Smith converters are being upgraded for converting the matte to blister copper and a new acid plant and oxygen plant are being installed. Two new anode furnaces and a twin anode casting wheel have been installed in 2005 and commissioned in January 2006. The modernization project will ensure the smelter satisfies new environmental regulations due to come into force in January 2007. This paper summarises the background to the modernization project, describes the main design features of the new copper smelter and summarises progress on the smelter construction as of early 2006. This paper describes the genesis of the Ilo Smelter Modernization Project and describes in details the scope and current status of the project.

Modern mining operations are increasingly characterised by their access to large volumes of data and advanced computational tools. Over the past two decades, the industry has made substantial investments in digital technologies supporting geological modelling, mine planning, equipment dispatch, and process control(Newmon et al., 2010; Paraszczak, 2019). These systems have significantly improved the ability to generate and analyse information across the mining value chain. However, despite these advances, the decisions that ultimately determine operational performance remain largely implicit and unmanaged (Kruger et al., 2023; Jia, 2022). Mining decisions rarely occur in isolation. Decisions made in geology influence resource models, which shape mine plans, production schedules, and downstream processing strategies. These, in turn, affect operational execution. As deposits become deeper, ore grades decline, and operational constraints increase, these interdependencies create increasingly complex decision environments (Newman et al, 2010; Topal, 2008; Darling, 2011; Dimitrakopoulos, 2004). In practice, coordination across these domains often relies on informal communication, iterative meetings, and manual interpretation of analytical outputs. Explicit decision support systems provide a mechanism to capture these dependencies, maintain consistent decision context, and coordinate decision-making across geological, planning, and operational domains (Power, 2002; Shim et al., 2002). This paper argues that a fundamental gap remains in current digital mining systems: while data and analytics are well supported, decision-making itself is not. Addressing this gap requires treating decisions as explicit, structured elements within the operational system. By integrating data, computational analysis, and decision processes, explicit decision support systems offer a way to better coordinate complex, interdependent decisions across mining operations.

In the Appalachian region of the United States, approximately 40% of the underground coal reserve base exists in seams 0.7 - 1.1m thick. These seams are, in general, often of premium quality and are frequently accessible through above-drainage drift-type openings. Unfortunately, there are no apparent advantages to mining thin seams, if quality is disregarded. The thin-seam mine is faced with the same legal and economic pressures as any other underground coal mine. But in addition to these common problems, thin-seam operations must also deal with the unique problems associated with mining at such a restrictive height. Small-scale, short-lived operations appear to be the most feasible means of mining these reserves. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the production and safety potential of various thin-seam mining systems. Recommendations will be made regarding present and future thin-seam operations.

The Canadian Javelin Limited Cerro Colorado copper-porphyry deposit in Panama, possibly the largest known copper-porphyry, contains between 1350 and 450 meter elevations, drill proven and probable ore in excess of 3.0 billion tons averaging 0.65% of copper equivalent. The deposit is located in the Central Cordillera Range, straddling the Continental Divide at 1500 meter elevation. Local topography is very steep. Accessibility is difficult, all logistics made by helicopter, and only recently a 52 km. road from the Pan-American highway was completed into the area. The deposit was discovered in 1969, and since then 75 shallow exploratory holes and 98 deep holes, the deepest 1340 meters, totalling 45,000 meters have been drilled. Deep holes were drilled at the corners of a regular rectangular 150 meter grid.

The evolution of grain and dislocation structures during cold deformation of the new steel LH800 of Salzgitter AG is investigated in the frame of this work. The main feature of this material is its ability to air-harden by carbon content of about 0.1%. The initial ferrite structure of the metal provides high plasticity at cold deformation and subsequent heat treatment increases tensile strength approximately two times. Described are results of in-situ tensile tests in the SEM. SEM and TEM analysis of grain and dislocation structures evolution in samples, which have been uniaxially deformed to certain strains, are carried out. After statistical evaluation of results the grain elongation against strain is determined. A microstructure of a deep drawn cup is analyzed by means of SEM. A quantitative evaluation of grain elongation on the different cup zones and comparison of these data with prediction results based on tensile tests are carried out.

The Mt Keith Mining Alliance operates a fleet of large capacity hydraulic face shovels and more than 40 X 240 t capacity haul trucks to deliver annual production in excess of 40 Mbcm per annum. The Mt Keith Nickel mine is currently operating at a depth to 300 m below surface with a planned final depth of the order of 500 m. As is the case with any large open pit managing the health of the workforce on continuous shift operations is of critical importance to achieving outstanding safety and production outcomes. Fatigue management at Mt Keith is effectively managed by the personnel operating the mining equipment, with assistance and understanding of the management team and supervisors. The program has been driven through the introduction of Fatigue Champions and a comprehensive management plan that includes education, individual health plans and the use of new technologies. Mt Keith has been instrumental in trialling new technology which assists in monitoring fatigue in operations personnel. Insight into these developments is provided in the context of the overall fatigue management plan. The field trials of the OptAlert(TM) system and how it assists in measuring fatigue is explained. The implications for individual operators and the context for a fleet wide approach to fatigue management is also discussed. Mt Keith has recently completed the second phase of trials with the result that this new and exciting technology is being considered for adoption globally across BHP BillitonÆs open pit mining operations.

The discovery of the Prudhoe Bay field temporarily reduced interest in the development of coal conversion processes, but interest is being re¬newed by the current energy crisis. According to M.A. Wright, Chairman of the Board of Humble Oil and Refining Company(l), the reserve in the Prudhoe Bay bield has been confirmed to be about 10 billion barrels. At first glance this appears to be an extremely large reserve which will eliminate supply problems for the United States for some time. This feeling of security is lost when one realizes that by 1980 the world will consume the reserves of a Prudhoe Bay or a Libya, or Venezuela in less than a year, based on the recent predictions of U.S. and world reserves made by Eastman-Dillon, Union Securities Company(2). Recent forecasts of U.S. demand and source of supply made by Kenneth E. Hill of Eastman-Dillon are shown in Figure 1. This forecast shows a decline in domestic supplies (excluding Alaska) after 1973, with the total domestic supply leveling off in 1975 at about 13 million barrels per day. Since the predicted demand increases from about 14 million barrels per day in 1970 to about 20 million barrels per day in 1980, about 35% of domestic consumption must come from imports or non-conventional sources by 1980. More imminent is the shortage of low sulfur fuel oil which has been created by the new, tough air pollution regulations that are basically legis¬lating eastern coals out of the market. As an alternate to importing large quantities of low sulfur fuel oil or importing and desulfurizing regular fuel oil, one of two domestic solutions is possible: stack gas clean-up or solids fuel pretreatment. Stack gas clean-up may be the cheapest approach for old installations, but fuel pretreatment has real advantages for new installations. The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers Explosive Excavation Research Office (EERO) of Livermore, California, has been engaged in research and development of excavation techniques using both nuclear and conventional explosives since 1962. Prior to July 1971, this organization was designated the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers Nuclear Cratering Group. The EERO mission is performed as part of the joint Atomic Energy Commission -Corps of Engineers nuclear excavation research pro-gram. During the period 1962-1969, the Corps executed many cratering explosions using spherical charges of up to 85 tons of nitromethane to model nuclear excavation concepts and to develop design criteria for the nuclear cratering explosions. The experience gained in these modeling tests suggested that explosive excavation using large chemical explosive charges could be applied to excavation projects as an economical substitute for traditional excavation techniques. Consequently, the Corps' research program was broadened in 1969 to include development of chemical explosive excavation as a construction tool. The term "explosive excavation" denotes the use of large buried explosive charges to produce an excavation by fracturing the material and casting it into a desired configuration. In its simplest form, this technology involves detonation of a single explosive charge buried at the proper depth to produce a crater which is roughly hyperbolic in cross section. The types of craters produced by various depths of burial are illustrated by Figure 1. Single or Multiple rows of charges are used to excavate linear cuts required for water conveyance or navigation channels. .More complex explosive excavations include small craft harbors, railroad and highway cuts, and removal of W1denvater rock barriers to navigation. TULSA, the host of the Petroleum Division this year, is the oil metropolis of the Mid- Continent and gateway of the Southwest. It has risen in less than three decades from a dusty cattle town of less than 1000 population to its present-day status of a modern, wide-awake and prosperous city of close to 150,000, with an assessed realty valuation of approximately $100,000,000. Oil was discovered near Tulsa in 1901, and with it came th.2 development of the Mid-Continent field, one of the richest in the world. Tulsa from the start has been the center of operations, and its location on foul- and aggressive application of the airplane to oil-field requirements tends to fix this status as production is developed farther and farther afield. That Tulsa is far more than an ephemeral oil town is punched into the newcomer's- especially the Easterner's-mind, as he is whisked by taxi from the railroad station to the Hotel Mayo. The cicadalike pounding of the riveters on the steel skeletons of many skyscrapers, mounting upward to fill the gaps in an already well-developed skyline, dispels the feeling of a new atmosphere and puts him back on Forty-second Street, Michigan Boulevard or whatever his own particular "Main Street" may be along which an American city is being remade. "Detailed characterization and improved recovery of a micro-fine, low-grade refractory gold ore from a beneficiation plant in Yunnan Province, China, was investigated. Different analytical techniques, such as videlicet size analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and mineral analysis by a Mineral Liberation Analyser, were used for mineralogical characterization of the ore. This paper describes an experimental study on the effect of the grinding fineness and the use of various flotation reagent regimes involving collectors, depressors, and activators on the flotation behaviour of micro-fine auriferous pyrite. Two-stage flotation resulted in high gold grade (32.71 g/t) and gold recovery (80.02%) of the bulk gold concentrate. This process opens the possibilities of maximizing Au recoveries in a micro-fine low-grade refractory gold ore where low recoveries are common.INTRODUCTIONWith the rapid development of the gold industry, refractory gold ores are becoming increasingly important resources for gold production (O’Connor & Dunne, 1994; Agorhom, Skinner, & Zanin, 2012). Among these refractory gold ores, sulfur and micro-grained native gold ores represent a significant challenge, since they are not amenable to gold recovery by direct cyanidation. The gold contained in this type of ore is very finely disseminated and encapsulated in sulfides, which makes it inaccessible to the cyanide solution during direct cyanidation (Bulatovic, 1997; Allan & Woodcock, 2001). Autoclave pressure oxidation (AC POX) of the sulfide ore and subsequent cyanidation is a common technology used to recover the gold in such types of ore. Flotation is often used as a pre-treatment method to refractory gold ore (Monte Lins, & Oliveira, 1997).As the gold-carrier minerals are usually finely disseminated (sometimes under 10 µm) and intimately associated with gangue minerals, a fine grind is necessary to get a high degree of liberation. At the same time, the fine grind usually causes the production of significant quantities of slimes, which comprise easy-to-float gangue minerals such as mica, dolomite, and calcite. These mineral phases are naturally hydrophobic and float readily, competing with the value minerals in the froth phase and resulting in lower concentrate grades."

"The new metro line “C” entails the construction and rehabilitation of 24 stations and 21,5 km of metro line, 13 of which carried out underground; the new metro line will improve the transportation system of a congested city such as Rome.The new line “C” of San Giovanni metro station will be constructed adjacent to the existing line “A” of San Giovanni station; the new metro line “C” is deeper than line “A” and will underpass the existing station. The underpass project envisages an Artificial Ground Freezing in order to excavate two new tunnels, while keeping trains running in the safest possible condition.In order to allow trains to regularly run to and from the existing station’s line “A”, a temporary structure for rail support, during excavation of the under-crossing tunnels, was installed and a real-time monitoring system was devised in order to control both soil temperature during freezing activities and the existing station’s behavior. The monitoring system has been one of the key to the success of the project.The excavation of tunnels under the water table, with a hydraulic head of over 10 m in not homogeneous soils having different mechanical properties and permeability and below existing sensitive structures, involves special ground freezing sequences and methods, as well as peculiar drilling systems and operations, such as TDDT (Trevi Directional Drilling Technology).THE NEW “C” LINE OF ROME’S METROThe world’s most complex and extraordinary Metro System is currently being built in the heart of Rome. Its underground route stretches underneath the most important monuments, churches and historical buildings.Rome’s Metro Line C is the longest urban underground railway in Italy and it is the first line in Rome to extend further east to the Great Ring Road, thus bridging the gap between the farthest suburbs and the Historical Centre. It is an original project, carried out mostly underground at a depth of 25/30 metres below road level."
