Due to the perceived potential to extract the second economic manganese seam at its Black Rock Operations in the Northern Cape Province, South Africa, Assmang commissioned an investigation with respect to mining method and sequencing of the two orebodies in 2007. Based on this initial study into multiseam potential, conditions and impacts, the rock engineering aspect was expanded to determine conceptual rules to govern the extraction of both manganese seams using the normal bord-and-pillar layout implemented at this operation. This work included the theoretical analysis using basic pillar design practices and numerical modelling, including the use of Map3D, UDEC and Phase2 codes.In 2013, Assmang launched a large-scale investigation into the potential to increase mine output from all possible manganese sources at the operation. Included in this investigation was the requirement to confirm or modify the conceptual multiseam extraction rules to implementation. As part of this confirmation process, stress measurements, borehole camera audits and additional numerical modelling were performed at a particular site on the operation where a limited extraction of both seams had been undertaken. Coal supply analysis has since about 1973 become a major activity of many scholars and consulting firms. The present paper is an effort to explain in as nontechnical fashion as possible the state of the art and what implications, if any, the research has for those actually engaged in producing coal or regulating the industry. l The discussion stresses the coal supply side of the models and makes limited comments about other elements in the analysis. To orient the appraisal, it is desirable to recall the features of coal supply that an adequate model should capture. The first considerations are the locational aspects of the industry. Transportation costs can, in some cases, exceed the production costs of coal, and thus any adequate model must incorporate a treatment of the economics of transporting coal from one location to another. A second major issue is that of the heterogeneity of coal; models should treat as well as possible such key differences among coals as their Btu and sulfur content. Third, we recognize that, with given technology and labor, capital, and supply costs, an expansion of the supply of a given type of coal in a specific region will occur only if prices rise. This is the familiar proposition of textbook economics that supply is an increasing function of price. Finally, over time, changes in technology, input cost, and depletion interact to cause changes in the price of given amounts of coal. Economics represents the net effect of this process by a shift over time in the supply curve. During the 1950s and 1960s, the trend was to reduce the production costs of a given output; subsequently costs rose sharply.

The operation of hot stoves used for preheating the blast in the ironmaking blast furnace has a strong effect on the consumption of reductants, economic performance of and CO2 emissions from the steelmaking site. Generally, it is recommended to maintain as high blast temperature as possible, because this minimizes the rate of reductants in the blast furnace. The blast temperature is affected in a complex way by the time periods of heating and cooling of the stoves, and by the amount of gas combusted in the stoves. Furthermore, as the hot stoves show degraded performance with age, it is a non-trivial task to select optimal operation parameters for the stoves. The paper addresses this computationally by applying a one-dimensional heat-transfer model of the hot stoves for optimization of the performance of the system. The complexity and strong coupling of the decision variables is demonstrated by numerical examples, where the blast temperature is maximized under different constraints.

Cu–Ti alloy wires doped with and without a small amount of Ni were fabricated by over-aging and using intense drawing procedures. For both the Cu–Ti alloys with and without Ni doping, the over- aged microstructure was occupied fully with a coarse lamella of Cu solid solution and β-Cu4Ti plates precipitated discontinuously by grain boundary reactions. The full-lamellar microstructure was developed much more rapidly by aging in multi steps at 873 K to 723 K rather than by isothermal aging at 723 K. Ni doping in Cu-Ti alloy was also effective to accelerate the formation of the lamellar microstructure. When drawing the over-aged alloy with inferior hardness but superior electrical conductivity, the strength increased steadily and eventually exceeded that for the wires drawn from the peak-aged alloy. In addition, the electrical conductivity of the wires drawn from the over-aged alloy was always much greater than that from the peak-aged alloy. Eventually, the procedure of over-aging, followed by intense drawing, could enhance both the strength and electrical conductivity of Cu-Ti alloys, whichever they contain a small amount of Ni or not, rather than the conventional peak-aging and drawing process. INTRODUCTION Cu-based alloy wires, which have an excellent combination of strength and electrical conductivity, have attracted extensive attention for highly mechanically stressed electrical devices, such as conductive lead wires and wires in suspension springs. Cu-Be alloys are widely used for such electrical components owing to their combination of strength and electrical conductivity among industrial Cu-based alloys. However, since beryllium is potentially toxic and also a rare element, substitute materials for Cu-Be alloys have been searched for several decades. Age-hardenable Cu–Ti based alloys have been proposed as candidates because their mechanical and physical properties are comparable to those of Cu-Be alloys; however, their electrical conductivity is inferior (Datta & Soffa, 1976; Soffa & Laughlin, 2004). In order to satisfy the requirement of downsizing and streamlining electrical devices, further improvement of the mechanical and electrical properties of Cu–Ti alloy wires is needed. Age-hardenable Cu–Ti alloys, which contain approximately 3 to 6 at.% Ti, are typically prepared using a solid solution treatment above 1100 K and then aging at a moderate temperature of 700 K to 800 K. It has been revealed that the microstructural events during aging progress as follows (Soffa & Laughlin, 2004): (1) compositional modulation of the parent supersaturated Cu solid solution in an initial aging stage (Laughlin & Cahn, 1975), (2) continuous nucleation and growth of fine needle-shaped precipitates of metastable β’-Cu4Ti with a tetragonal structure in a peak-aged stage, and (3) discontinuous precipitation of cellular components laminating the plates of a terminal Cu solid solution and stable β-Cu4Ti with an orthorhombic structure at the grain boundaries in an over-aging stage. It has been also accepted that the highest number density of dispersed fine β’-Cu4Ti needles should contribute to maximal strengthening. On the other hand, decease of the strength in the over-aging stage occurs due to the replacement of the fine β’- Cu4Ti needles with cellular components containing coarse β-Cu4Ti plates, while the electrical conductivity is significantly enhanced due to the depletion of solute Ti in the Cu matrix. This suggests that a combination of strength and electrical conductivity for age-hardenable Cu-Ti alloys is in a trade-off relationship, and that innovative improvement of both properties might be limited to tuning the aging conditions.

Mining operations, especially surface coal mines, have great impacts on the local ecosystem and the environment. However, it has been a common practice in mine design that the economic evaluation considers only the operating and capital costs, while the costs incurred due to ecological damage are left out. Such practice underestimates the total cost of mining and ignores the difference in ecological impacts between different mine design alternatives. With growing interest in sustainable development, the mining industry is under increasing pressure to operate not only based on economic and engineering principles but also on principles of sustainability. Therefore, estimating ecological costs of mining and considering such costs in the mine design process is an important step towards reducing ecological impacts at the design stage. The objective of this paper is to quantify the ecological costs of open pit coal mining and to demonstrate the influence of such costs on the ultimate pit design. The ecological costs of mining are estimated based on the areas and types of land damaged by mining activities and the carbon emission from energy consumption. Four major components of ecological cost are identified, namely, lost value of direct eco-services, lost value of indirect eco-services, prevention and restoration costs, and the cost of carbon emission from energy consumption. Necessary equations are given for estimating these costs. An algorithm is described for ultimate pit optimization in coal deposits with near-horizontal coal seams. A case study is presented in which the ultimate pits with and without ecological costs are optimized and compared to show the influence of ecological costs on the pit design outcome.

"Friction stir welding (FSW) process in lap configuration for dissimilar materials has been developed and tested for steel to aluminum joining. A novel cylindrical tool was designed for improved material flow. The joining of steel to high strength 5xxx and 6xxx aluminum was carried out by FSW technique using optimized process parameters. The microstructure, micro-hardness, joint strength and corrosion properties at the weld interface have been investigated. Optical and scanning electron microscopy reveled a well layered structure at the interface and lap shear tests of the welds showed excellent fracture resistance. Neutral salt spray tests for up to 500 hours (ASTM B117) were carried out on the bare steel to aluminum FSW joints, which did not show neither evidence of corrosion at the weld interface, nor any degradation of the weld strength. The FSW lap configuration was applied to prototype commercial vehicle structural component whereby a steel stiffener insert was friction stir welded to high strength 6xxx aluminum alloy. The interface microstructure showed layered root without any steel shattering in aluminum side. A finite element study was carried out to quantify the benefits where it was found that the stiffness increases by 76% under bending loads and 36% in torsion loads.INTRODUCTION Energy preservation and environmental issues, namely carbon footprint and legislation around emission in transportation industries has led to a growing need to use of lightweight materials such as aluminum and magnesium alloys along with various grades of steel in structural application, while still maintaining their strength and crashworthiness. Assembling dissimilar materials within integrated structure is thus a stringent requirement related to optimum performance. In order to achieve an efficient technology of joining dissimilar materials such as aluminum to steel, it remains difficult to select an effective welding process for a given joint configuration. The use of aluminum in transportation industries for structural component is not exclusive in a design and is almost always used along with various steel grades for a mixed materials solution, thus dissimilar aluminum/steel lap joining is of great interest since this is widely used in the assembly of parts (e.g. pillar, frame rails, chassis, body in white (BIW), CAB, etc.)."

The Henty Gold Mine, located in Western Tasmania uses innovative solutions to effectively manage a mining operation in an environmentally sensitive setting and has been presented with several environmental awards. Fill is required as part of the mining method to provide passive ground support, minimise rock exposure and ensure maximum recovery of the small but high-grade orebody. The use of the whole portion of leach residue in the backfill reduces the surface tailing disposal requirements. Therefore, High Density Paste Fill (HDPF) has been selected as the most appropriate fill method to meet these objectives. Additional benefits include the minimisation of excess water from fill and the subsequent need for the collection and treatment of water and slimes. There are minimal equipment requirements during placement, thereby optimising mine resources for production. This paper covers the development of a suitable paste fill system to meet the specific needs of the Henty Gold Mine and the successful commissioning of this system for the first time in Australia.

"Controlling float coal dust in underground coal mines before dispersal into the general airstream can reduce the risk of mine explosions while potentially achieving a more effective and efficient use of rock dust. A prototype flooded-bed scrubber was evaluated for float coal dust control in the return of a continuous miner section. The scrubber was installed inline between the face ventilation tubing and an exhausting auxiliary fan. Airborne and deposited dust mass measurements were collected over three days at set distances from the fan exhaust to assess changes in float coal dust levels in the return due to operation of the scrubber. Mass-based measurements were collected on a per-cut basis and normalized on the basis of per ton mined by the continuous miner. The results show that average float coal dust levels measured under baseline conditions were reduced by more than 90 percent when operating the scrubber. IntroductionAirborne coal dust is a byproduct of coal production, and engineering controls exist to deal with both the respirable dust health hazard as well as the float dust explosion safety hazard. Float coal dust, smaller than 75 µm (0.003 in.) in size, can deposit throughout mine entries and propagate explosions that had been initially fueled by methane gas. The inertization of float coal dust with rock dust helps prevent a potential secondary float coal dust explosion, but a preferable course of action is to significantly reduce the hazard by removing float coal dust from the airstream before it has the opportunity to deposit on the mine’s surfaces.Since 1970, disasters due to explosions in underground coal mines have caused 201 deaths in the U.S. mining industry, including 29 deaths in a single mine explosion in 2010 (Wade, 2010; U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration, 2015). The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) had initiated a fiveyear research project that aims to investigate methods and technologies to reduce the potential for secondary coal dust explosions by the purposeful capture and/or suppression of float coal dust prior to its deposition on the mine roof, rib and floor (NIOSH, 2013). The project aims to evaluate the efficiency of methods to reduce longwall and belt airway float dust in the general airstream as well as methods to capture it at or near the source. Prioritization is given to longwall sections given the amount of coal produced relative to continuous miner sections, but the research is open to technologies that may be adapted from one method of mining to another."

The mechanisms involved in the adsorption of modified thiol-type collectors on sulfide minerals have been investigated in the present work. These collectors belong to the broad classes of thionocarbamates, thioureas, thiophosphates and thiophosphinates. They differ significantly from the traditionally used thiol-type collectors, such as xanthates and dithiophosphates, in terms of structural features that involve either the introduction of an additional oxygen donor or the alteration of electron densities on donor atoms. Electrochemical studies suggest that the adsorption of these classes of collectors is probably the result of a coupled reaction of the EC-type, involving an initial electron transfer step (E), followed immediately by a chemical reaction (C). Thus, the overall adsorption process is controlled by both the E, and pK of the system. The role of structural features in changing the interaction of the donor atoms with sulfide minerals is also discussed.

Outokumpu Harjavalta Metals Oy operates copper and nickel smelters, three sulphuric acid plants and nickel refinery at Harjavalta and copper refinery and precious metal plant at Pori. The by-products of these plants are presented in this paper. The by-products of the smelters include products from slag cleaning of flash smelting furnaces and converters, flue dusts and smelter off-gases. Weak acid and sludges from cleaning of smelter off-gases and acids are the by-products of the acid plants. The by-products out of the copper refinery are crystallized metal sulphates and sludges from electrolyte purification, on which a co-production process of the copper tankhouse is based. The main by-products of the precious metals plant are products from anode slime treatment and platinum metal group concentrates in the recovery of precious metals. Sludges from nickel matte leaching and precipitates from solution purification are the by-products of the nickel refinery. The formation, treatment and processing as well as the research work done for the utilization instead of dumping of the by-products in the production of copper and nickel will also be discussed in this paper.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the use of electronic computers for obtaining more information about relative permeabilities of reservoir rock to oil and water. It was found that there are many possible combinations of relative permeability curves that will result in virtually the same recovery versus injection) but they require different times and rates to recover the oil even with different mobility ratios. Permeability curves obtained by the use of non-viscous oil and employed for calculating the waterfloods of viscous oils can lead to serious inaccuracies. For viscous oils) the wettability characteristics in the middle portion of the permeability curve affect recovery nearly as much as other portions of the curve; this) however) is not true for non-viscous oils in water-wet reservoir rock.

"Construction for the restoration and expansion of 102-year-old Wrigley Field in Chicago, Illinois began at the conclusion of the 2014 baseball season. This six year project involves structural upgrades to the Stadium, improvements to the facade, infrastructure, restrooms, concourses, suites, press box, and bullpens, as well as the addition of restaurants, patio areas, batting tunnels, video boards, an adjacent Office-retail Tower and a new Hotel. The Bleachers were demolished and replaced, and a new underground Clubhouse was constructed for the Chicago Cubs beneath a new open-air Plaza. The 1060 Project is privately funded, projected at $750 million (US). The work will be completed in phases during consecutive off-seasons, each with a maximum 23-week duration extending through the Chicago winter. Ownership mandated that on-going construction cause no disruption to the Major League Baseball season, have no impact on hosting concerts and other special events, and it should not adversely affect seating capacity, or diminish the fan experience.The 1060 ProjectAfter purchasing the Chicago Cubs baseball team in 2009 from the Tribune Company, the Ricketts family began planning the renovation and improvement of Wrigley Field and its near neighborhood surroundings in Chicago, Illinois. What came to be known as the 1060 Project was officially announced at the annual Cubs Convention in 2013. Construction began on the $750M privately funded project in October 2014 at the conclusion of the Major League Baseball season. In their vision, the Ricketts committed the 1060 Project to three primary goals. First and foremost as a MLB franchise, the work should provide a meaningful contribution toward winning the World Series and ending the championship drought which stretched to the last win in 1908. Second, the project should be focused on preserving and improving Wrigley Field. Finally, the project should be committed to outcomes that enable the team to be a good neighbor and provide economic and social benefit to the local community.Constructed as Weeghman Park in 1914 for an estimated total cost of $250,000, the stadium provided seating for 18,000 fans and a home for the Chi-Feds and Whales of the National Federal League. The Chicago Cubs were enticed to move from the West Side Grounds in 1915. In the next 100 years, the Wrigley Field would be sliced apart and expanded, double its seating capacity with the addition of double deck grandstands, be enclosed by bleachers (and an ivy covered wall), and, in 1988, experience its first nighttime baseball game with the addition of lighting.The 1060 Project has a total budget of $750M, with an expected construction value of $350M. It is projected to add over 2,100 jobs to the economy and be completed before the 2020 baseball season. "A fundamental component of the Hoek–Brown empirical rock failure criterion is assessing an appropriate mi constant. In developing their empirical criterion Hoek and Brown normalised triaxial test results by dividing the principal stresses at failure by the uniaxial compressive strength to provide mi values for typical rock types. Experience shows that Hoek triaxial tests for individual lithology types commonly have a large inherent scatter. In addition, tests are often conducted on core from random locations, which although being of one parent rock type, display variations in density as well as minor variations in grain size and alteration.This paper presents experience from projects the authors have been involved in which large sample populations of triaxial and UCS tests on similar rock types were available. Geophysical logging data was also available for some projects. The methods used to estimate the compressive strength for each sample and the effects on normalising the data sets are described. The variability of the data and uncertainties and assumptions involved in the process of assigning a mi value from the normalised data are also discussed."

A new P(MAAA) latex was developed and used in separation of ultrafine apatite from calcite and silica by means of selective flocculation. The latex was found to flocculate selectively apatite from apatite/calcite and apatite/silica mixtures in the presence of sodium tripolyphosphate and sodium silicate over a pH range from 9.1 to 9.4. The separation of apatite from calcite was more selective with sodium tripolyphosphate, while the results of the separation of apatite from silica were better when sodium silicate was used. In the apatite/calcite system, 90% apatite recoveries into a concentrate containing 34% P2O5 were possible in the presence of 4 mg/l of sodium tripolyphosphate at a latex dosage of 2.2 kg/t. In the apatite/silica system, 80% of apatite could be recovered into a concentrate containing 33% P2O5 in the presence of 20 mg/l of sodium silicate at a latex dosage of 1.1 kg/t. Deposition tests were used to study the interaction between the latex and the mineral surfaces. The results revealed that deposition density of the latex on apatite was higher than on calcite; the differences between the deposition onto these two minerals were higher at pH 9.2 than at 7.2. The results point to the stronger interaction between the latex and apatite surface when compared with the latex-calcite interactions.

T HE Mining Methods Committee held its initial meeting* on Tuesday afternoon, with F. W. Bradley in the chair and W. Y. Westervelt as vice- chairman. The first paper to be presented was "A Plea for a U. S. Court of Patent Appeals," for which Kenneth W. Greenawalt ably pleaded. The paper (which was published in full in last month's issue) is so carefully prepared that no synopsis can do it justice. It discusses the opposed views of some patent lawyers and other lawyers and members of the judiciary as, for example, Chief Justice Taft who is quoted as saying in 1921: "I think it is a great deal better to take a first class lawyer and a first-class judge and make him a good patent expert than it is to take a patent expert and try to make him a first-class lawyer and a good judge." Mr. Greenawalt argued the need for specialized scientific and engineering interest and understanding to enable a lawyer or judge to prepare or interpret patent specifications and decide the originality necessary for a valid invention. He proposed the special U. S. Court of Patent Appeals to also counteract the costly confusion and injustice now ruling where a patent may be declared valid in the courts of certain States and invalid by the courts of other States.

"INTRODUCTION Respirable dust is defined as the dust which penetrates to the alveolated regions of the lungs. Due to the size selective nature of the particle removal mechanisms in the nasal passages and lung airways, criteria defining respirable particles must be a function of the particle size. Three criteria defining respirable particle penetration are shown in Figure 1. These criteria have been defined by the British Medical Research Council (BMRC), the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) and German TBF 50-11 (1).The quantity of respirable particles in an aerosol can be measured by use of two-stage samplers. The first stage consists of a particle preclassifier with penetration characteristics corresponding to one of the respirable penetration curves in Figure 1. The large nonrespirable dust particles are removed from the airstream in the preclassifier and the smaller respirable dust particles pass on to some device which can measure their concentration (the respirable dust concentration).Instrumentation for the measurement of respirable coal mine dust has been limited by the severe conditions existing within the coal mine. The conditions of particular importance are the methane atmosphere, high humidity, and the general non-laboratory type environment. The most severe of these conditions is the methane atmosphere since any electronic or electric powered instrumentation must be intrinsically safe to operate in such an atmosphere.In spite of the difficulty of sampling respirable dust within the mines, many instruments have been developed for in mine use. Although these instruments operate under a variety of principles they generally fall within two categories: personal samplers and area samplers.A personal sampler is worn by the mines while he is performing his duties in the mine. These devices are generally small, light weight and require little power so as not to interfere with the miner's ability to work."

Freeport-McMoRan Inc. operates an ISASMELTTM furnace for the smelting of copper concentrate at the Miami Smelter in Claypool, Arizona. In May 2017, the furnace was restarted after incorporating newly designed copper cooling elements from just above the tap hole to the underside of the roof. The objective of the improved cooling design was to extend campaign life by eliminating existing failure mechanisms with the wall refractory. In addition to upgraded bathline coolers and complete coverage of the gas offtake transition, or ‘kettle’, with plate coolers, a novel arrangement of coolers was installed in the remaining freeboard area. The shell required significant cutting and re-stiffening, as well as extensive modification of the cooling water piping. Based on performance observed to date, it is expected that smelter throughput will be increased due to extended ISASMELTTM refractory campaign life.

Submerged arc furnaces and electric smelters are applied in numerous metal and slag production lines. Particularly in ferroalloy and non-ferrous metal production, like silicon metal, platinum group metals, calcium carbide, and copper, the units are an essential part of the production technology. Most of these electric furnaces are considered to be highly energy-intensive units. The high level of required electrical power is defined by the process. SMS developed several measures to reduce the overall electrical energy consumption of these metal production lines. In particular, the following measures contributes to a lower energy consumption: improved electrical efficiency with intelligent design and application of components, minimizing the heat losses from the furnaces with a balanced cooling/refractory systems, minimization of process steps (such as elimination of agglomeration), recovery of energy, process optimization (resulting in higher metal yield) and the achievement of higher recovery rates, enlarging furnace capacity to reduce heat losses, and maximizing the power-on time. This paper gives an overview of the above-mentioned solutions.

"Goldcorp has embarked upon an ambitious, industry-leading, multi-year water use reduction effort. This is a proactive, voluntary effort that reflects our commitment to truly sustainable mining. This effort will focus on increasing water re-use and recycling, and reducing water inputs ultimately towards zero. All of our operating mines are expected to contribute to this effort and are currently in the process of developing plans to meet short and long term objectives. One of the largest needle movers to increase water re-use and recycling is in the area of tailings management. Within five to ten years at Goldcorp, it is envisioned that the need for wet tailings dams will be eliminated and that all new tailings facilities will consist of only filtered or dewatered tailings. Filtered tailings is developing into a mature technology with wide application in mine waste management. This paper describes a conceptual level evaluation on the transition from a slurry to a filtered tailings operation at the Cerro Negro mine in southern Argentina. Key benefits and challenges are highlighted.INTRODUCTION Goldcorp’s Cerro Negro operation is located in the Santa Cruz province in the Patagonian region of Argentina. Cerro Negro has been in operation since 2014 and commercial production was achieved on January 1, 2015. The processing capacity of the plant is 4,000 tonnes of ore per day and in 2016 produced 363,000 ounces of gold and 3.1 million ounces of silver (Goldcorp Inc., 2017). As the mine is located in a semi-arid area, it is important to evaluate technologies that could reduce freshwater consumption and maximize water re-use and recycle rates. The current tailings operation at Cerro Negro incorporates pumping of tailings slurry into a conventionally lined Tailings Storage Facility (TSF). Water is reclaimed from the tailings supernatant pond to the process plant via pumps, however, water losses occur due to evaporation and solution retention within the slurry tailings voids. Converting to a filtered or dewatered tailings operation would allow for increased water recovery prior to tailings disposal, and decreased water losses from evaporation and from retention in the tailings solids void space. This paper describes a conceptual level evaluation on the transition to filtered or dewatered tailings with the primary objective of moving closer Towards Zero Water."

One of the major unsolved problems of safe, economical roof support in the evaporite industry has been that of obtaining and maintaining anchorages in relatively soft rock. This is due to the viscoelastic and viscoplastic behaviour of salt rock and associated deposits. This paper introduces a low-cost, yieldable support mechanism, consisting of a system of buckling disks, which provides viable solutions to dynamic support. The yieldable support system offers a number of advantages in comparison with existing dynamic support systems. It is characterized by its simplicity in design and installation, repeatability in behaviour and cost effectiveness. It also has the added advantage of providing the operator with a means of assessing support behaviour and ground performance by direct visual observation of changes in disk shape. Thus, the system can be utilized as a warning mechanism of ground stress and support load conditions. Such system not only provides a feasible and more effective rock mass stabilization strategy but improves mine safety.
