ABSTRACT: Data were produced from two uranium project studies that were conducted in 2008, both involving uranium recovery from leached slurry by resin-in-pulp (RIP) with strong base resins. In both studies, excellent metallurgical results were produced. The loaded resins were eluted with strong sulphuric acid and recycled through RIP circuits in an integrated process. Resin losses by either abrasion or mechanical breakage were immeasurably low. Metallurgical results from these two campaigns are presented, along with a case study economic analysis of RIP versus the alternative processes of counter-current-decantation or filtration and solvent extraction.

New Zealand has been a significant producer of gold for over a century. Total recorded production is over 850 tonnes. There were three major periods of production: the first and biggest was between 1860 and 1880, the second was between 1895 and 1920 and the third was between 1930 and 1945. After 1945 gold production fell continually until 1980 when the major upward adjustment in gold price led to renewed interest. There have been important new developments in each of the known gold-rich areas: Westland, Otago and Coromandel and exploration for gold in these areas and in previously unprospected regions has reached unprecedented levels.

Despite the significant role of coal in the economic progress of nations, the occupational and health risks associated with its mining pose a major concern for industry stakeholders. The occurrence of roof collapses in coal mines remains a critical factor leading to substantial loss of life and financial damages for miners. Therefore, accurately predicting the roof fall rate (RFR) holds paramount importance. However, the uncertainty surrounding rock parameters in mines hinders the application of conventional methods to assess roof collapse rates in coal mines. To tackle the challenges associated with predicting roof fall rates in underground coal mines, this study proposes a novel solution by leveraging the Rock Engineering System (RES) method. The investigation is grounded in a dataset comprising 109 data points, encompassing crucial input parameters like depth of cover (DOF), primary roof support (PRSUP), intersection diagonal span (IS), mining height (MH), and coal mine roof rating (CMRR). In the model construction phase, 80% of the data (87 points) were utilized to build the RES model. A critical aspect of this study involves the evaluation of the RES model’s performance against alternative regression techniques, namely linear, power, exponential, polynomial, and logarithmic regression. This comparison was executed using the remaining 24 data points (20% of the dataset) for rigorous evaluation. Employing key statistical metrics such as mean square error (MSE), root mean square error (RMSE), and squared correlation coefficient (R2), the study systematically demonstrated the superior accuracy of the RES-based method compared to other approaches. In conclusion, the outcomes strongly support the efficacy of the RES method in predicting roof fall rates, not only in the specific case studied but also indicating promise for its application in other underground coal projects. This underscores the potential of the RES method as a reliable and versatile tool for forecasting roof fall rates in the complex and critical context of underground coal mining.

Construction contracts in the USA contain the clause "Value Engineering" ? an interesting and curious clause allowing contractor initiated design changes. Misleading is the interpretation of value engineering implying cost saving and sharing with the owner, and curious is the timing, just before beginning of actual construction. It is not surprising that such a clause would simply be ignored, because it involves change, often major design changes in very short time; and change is feared, moreover, it is vehemently resisted by all parties, owner, designer, contractor. The problem in the USA may lie in the divergence and separation of the two entities: Designer/Engineer and Builder/Contractor, assigned to the "one" engineering project. The priorities and incentives of these two groups are very different. The Engineer spends years, even decades, in design and prepares contract drawings often without a deep understanding of construction methods. Worse, with all the time available to him and in our era of tremendous advances in computational methods and speed, the designer turns in plans that are inexcusably exaggerated code-based design with excessive safety factors. As to the Contractor, he builds, often without appreciation of design principles or regard for design engineers. Redesign to apply a new technology or optimization of an inferior design just before construction becomes unthinkable. It is not surprising that adverse and hostile relationship between the designer and the contractor is a norm with extended disputes and claims, not to mention the cost these entail. Surprisingly, "Value Engineering" was successfully implemented in record speed on several very large projects in the metropolitan New York area. The process of change was unconventional, painful, and even comical. Four case studies are presented: two Design/Build: the 1.2 billion dollars Hudson-Bergen Light Rail Transit System in New Jersey and the 90 million dollars MTA Bus Depot in Manhattan, and two Conventional Design/Bid/Build: the 90 million dollars Queens Boulevard Bridge and the 150 million dollars Long Island Expressway.

In India, demand for coal exceeds its countrywide supply, despite its natural abundance, due to failure to achieve high production targets, especially in opencast mines, which are responsible for 94.98% of total raw coal production within the country. Employment of technological solutions, such as surface miners, is key to achieving higher coal production and productivity in an eco-friendly manner, especially in the populated areas adjacent to the mining zone and, hence, require restricted blasting operations. It eliminates blast hole drilling, blasting, and primary crushing units, thus reducing related environmental hazards like ground vibration and fly rocks. This paper encompasses the applicability, advantages, constructional features, and performance assessment models for each working mode of a surface miner. The current paper discusses the correlation between coal production and key productivity indicators, namely, machine shift-time, pick, and diesel consumption of surface miner in three different geo-mining conditions. Furthermore, relationships between machine shift-time, pick, and diesel consumption of surface miner and coal production were evaluated through bivariate regression analyses along with their coefficient of determination. These key productivity indicators of surface miner follow polynomial relationships with coal production on a daily and monthly basis, having Pearson correlation values from 0.774 to 0.907 and coefficient of determination, from 0.664 to 0.909 in opencast coal mines.

Risk quantification in grade-tonnage curves is critical for capital investment in mining projects and can be obtained through geostatistical simulations of orebodies. A practical difficulty may arise in multi-element deposits, as the joint modelling of the related attributes using the traditional co-simulation approaches is computationally intensive and may be impractical for use in the industrial environment. This paper presents the construction of risk-integrating grade-tonnage curves for a complex copper deposit in northern Brazil, by jointly simulating its key geochemical attributes of interest: Cu, Fe and K. The joint conditional simulation of these elements is based on Minimum/Maximum Autocorrelation Factors (MAF). MAF is an approach, based on principal components, that spatially decorrelates the variables involved to non-correlated factors. MAF’sspatial decorrelation at any lag distance is the main and critical difference of this approach from the principal component approach attempted in the past. In the MAF approach, the independent factors are individually simulated and back-transformed to the conditional simulations of the correlated deposit attributes that reproduce the cross-correlations of the original variables. This report supplements the date contained in Bureau of Mines Information Circular 6156, "Special features of core drilling in the salt beds of Western Texas and New Mexico," by J. S. Wroth. That circular dealt with the drilling of the first 12 of the 24 potash tests made by the U. S. Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the U. S. Geological Survey; this report is concerned with the drilling of the last 12 tests. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The writer is indebted to R. E. During recent years underground production for the Pennsylvania anthracite region has reached the lowest output per man per day figure of the last decade and a half. This fact, combined with increased unit costs for labor and material, has forced the market price of anthracite ever higher. Over the years the mines have become deeper, and haulage distances have increased, thus adding to the mining costs. The industry now recognizes the need for new mining techniques to offset increasing costs. The Federal Bureau of Mines, through its Anthracite Research Laboratory, is engaged in a program of underground-mining research in cooperation with anthracite-producing companies to aid in reestablishing the economy of the region by introducing methods and/ or machines that will reduce underground-mining costs and, at the same time, enhance the safety of the workmen.

The construction of a deep structural slurry wall in a restricted city centre location is always a challenging prospect. However, when the city is London and the site is bounded on two sides by high level canals and a main traffic highway on the third, the challenges are greater than usual. The paper discusses the design considerations required by the principal contractor to accommodate a single high level lateral support, value-engineered, bottom-up construction technique and the impact this had on the design detailing and construction of the slurry wall panels. This paper discusses the logistical challenges successfully overcome during the construction of 65,000sq ft of 40inch thick, 80ft deep structural slurry wall in the City of London. The paper reviews the benefits gained from using the state-of-the-art hydraulic grab and rotator system. Technological advances in computer instrumentation and real time monitoring were utilised to assist the grab operators in consistently delivering deviational control during excavation better than 1:200. With working space always at a premium on construction sites, the need for high quality, pre-fabricated reinforcement cages has never been greater. This paper reviews the argument for off-site fabrication of reinforcement members.

This study investigated the selective removal of arsenic from high-arsenic dust in alkaline systems and the effects of different leaching conditions. The results indicated that the liquid–solid ratio, NaOH concentration, and sulfur dosage had a significant influence on the process. The leaching efficiency of arsenic reached 99.57%, while that of lead was as low as 0.03% under appropriate conditions. In particular, the addition of sulfur can effectively promote the leaching of arsenic and reduce the dissolution of lead in the solutions. An artificial neural network was used to model the leaching process. It consisted of a back-propagation artificial neural network model with a “6–10–2” structure that could effectively simulate and predict the value with more than 99% accuracy. Based on the difference in weights of the different parameters in the neural network model, the relative importance of the parameters related to arsenic and lead leaching efficiency was obtained, which followed the order of NaOH concentration, liquid–solid ratio, sulfur dosage, temperature, time, and stirring speed.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. Eng (Mining Engineering) degree This paper addresses the critical parameters that need to be considered when designing a mechanized bord-and-pillar mining layout for a narrow tabular steep dipping orebody. These parameters are : ?Reef dip ?Reef width ?Geological structures within the orebody ?Physical dimensions of the selection of machines ?Gradeability of the selection of machines. The main objective in designing such a layout is to maximize machine efficiencies whilst minimizing dilution. This methodology was then applied in the design of a mechanized bord-and-pillar mining layout for a given piece of ground (Vlakpoort and Moddergat) using a given selection of machines. This piece of ground contains the PGM bearing UG2 Reef with an average thickness of 124 cm and dipping at 18°withadverse strike and dip changes. Two bord-and-pillar layouts were designed for this area. Layout 1 is characterized by the use of strike conveyors to convey ore on strike with an average LHD hauling distance of 35 m. Layout2 uses LHDs for all on strike conveyance of ore with an average hauling distance of 75 m. These two layouts were then technically and financially compared. It was concluded that layout 1 is theoretically superior but layout 2 was chosen due to its greater flexibility and probability of operational success. Layout 2 was also compared to conventional mining and it was concluded to be more economically feasible. However the latter is a proven mining method in these conditions and has a lower risk operational failure. Bord-and-pillar mining has some favourable promises such as improving labour difficulties, lowering operating costs and providing safer working conditions. The success of mechanized bord-and-pillar mining in narrow tabular steep dipping orebodies will depend on the extent of the research and development efforts which need to create and innovate technologies to overcome some of the current limitations stated in the above-mentioned parameters.

Komatsu America International has introduced two new hydraulic excavators. They can work in congested and confined areas. The tight tail swing radius of the PC128US-2 and PC22-8USLC-2 enables the excavators to minimize the work space. The units can operate in confined work settings that are inaccessible or counterproductive to traditional machines. Even the door is designed for tight working conditions. A convex door slides open along the exterior curve of the cab, rather than swinging out on hinges past tracks. And the excavators’ tight tail swing design allows them to load within the track width of the machine.

The recent establishment of an official price of 64.64 cents per ounce for silver by the President's order of December 21, 1933, has provoked discussion as to the effects of this move on the various metal-mining industries. To assist those of the mineral industry who are interested in this problem, the Bureau of Mines presents the following analysis of basic statistical data concerning; the relation of the silver price to the value of copper ores mined in the United States. The term "copper ore" as used herein includes all ores in which copper is the most abundant base metal paid for. In 1928, this class of ore contributed 98 percent of the total copper output of the United States.

The State of New South Wales is highly favoured in having vast deposits of coal adjacent to and within easy reach of the coastal Ports. Not only is the quality of the fuel generally superior to any found in the other States, but it is greater in extent than in any other part of the Continent. For interesting and reliable details of the history of the discovery of coal, the geology of the coal bearing strata, analysis of the various coals and other valuable data, the readers are referred to the book recently issued by the New South Wales Government, entitled The Mineral Resources of New South Wales, by Edward F. Pittman, A.R.S.M., etc., by the direction of the Hon. T. L. Fegan, Minister for Mines. The mining community is indebted to the Minister for having had published the most valuable condensed record of the mineral resources of the State extant.For the purposes of this paper we will only give such a general description of the coal fields as will make it intelligible in connection with the subject of the coal mining in the State of New South Wales.

In this research, a model quarry with an annual production capacity of 1 000 000 tonnes has been studied for both pit and hillside quarry cases with constant overall slope angle and variable bench slope angle, considering road grades of 8 per cent and 10 per cent. First, technical requirements have been determined and then the effect of production parameters, such as hole diameter, type of quarrying (pit or hillside) and road grade, on the cost has been investigated to determine bench height. Based on the results, it has been concluded that hole diameter has to be kept large in both pit and hillside quarrying to reduce drilling unit costs. In addition, in order to take advantage of gravity and reduce transportation cost, it has been suggested that bench height and road grade have to be kept high and low respectively in the case of hillside quarrying (downhill transportation) while, in the case of pit quarrying (uphill transportation), bench height and road grade have to be kept low and high respectively, in order to transport the blasted material to a lower height and distance, to save energy, thus decreasing the transport cost. This study is the extension of an investigation of reclamation of floodplain areas in the Coeur d'Alene Mining District, Idaho, that are unuseable in their natural condition, by construction of landfills with mill tailings. The study develops a valley-wide tailings disposal plan to utilize 20 potential landfill sites on floodplain areas and presents measures for reclaiming the sites for subsequent productive use. Field and laboratory testing on a test section and two abandoned impoundments support the use of hydraulically deposited tailings for landfill construction. Hydrological testing has shown that controlled discharge from tailings impoundments results in contaminant levels in the discharge below regulated standards. Additional testing indicated that compacted soil liners and pond management provide adequate contaminant abatement where acid-generating tailings are encountered. Mechanical compaction, including surcharge loading, upgrades foundation support capacity so that construction on the surface of tailings deposits is feasible. On completion of the testing program, the test sections were abandoned and rehabilitated. Details concerning potential landfill sites have been refined. At recent production rates, the 20 sites would result in 680 acres of reclaimed land, while providing a minimum of 40 years of tailings storage capacity. A general design has been developed for the retention dikes. Aspects of embankment stability, including liquefaction are discussed, and are shown to provide an adequate factor of safety under the anticipated range of operating conditions.

"The risk management objective of the AMIRA Code of Practice for Metal Accounting has seldom been systematically investigated in the literature up to the authors’ knowledge. Risk is defined in the Australian Standard on Risk Management (AS/NZS 4360:2004), as “the chance of something happening that will have an impact on objectives”. The simplified economic analysis performed in this paper has lead to define “something happening” as measurement non-representativity and “impact on objectives” as NSR loss from the optimal NSR. This has pinpointed a missing link being the establishment of a relation between NSR in flotation plants and measurement representativity. The proposed framework, referred to as the total cost of representativity, answers the previously unanswered question of how much accuracy/reproducibility is fit for purpose in a given flotation plant. Authors readily acknowledge that it is way easier to assess the cost of accuracy/reproducibility than the cost of inaccuracy/irreproducibility. However, this exercise not only answers previously unanswered questions but also establishes an essential link with operational excellence. This paper exposes why such operational excellence could neither be attained nor proved without a state of the art metal accounting system. This should impact not only how metal accounting systems are audited/designed/refactored, but also how flotation plants are designed.IntroductionBecause representative metal accounting is a vital source of information for the financial accounts of a mining/metallurgical company, the need for a code on metal accounting was recognized in 2001 and a team was formed in 2003, under the sponsorship of several major mining houses, to produce such a code. "An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Ore-bearing intrusions in the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB) were examined from nine mines: Boshekul, Nurkazgan, Kounrad, Borly, Aktogai, Koksai, Baogutu, Tuwu and Erdenet. The intrusions are diorite, granodiorite and tonalite with SiO2 contents ranging from 58 to 75 wt per cent, and show mildly fractionated rare earth elements (REE) ([LREE]N/[HREE]N = 2.7–4.7) – light REE and heavy REE – and varying Eu anomalies ([Eu]/[Eu]* = 0.58–1.4). The ratios of Sr/Y vary from 7.9 to 115 and the contents of Y from 4.6 to 23.9 ppm. The parental magmas of the intrusions are intrinsically oxidised. Zircon grains in the ore-bearing rocks from large- and intermediate-sized porphyry Cu deposits show high Ce4+/Ce3+ ratios characterised by 65–422 at Boshekul (>4.1 Mt Cu), 76–480 at Kounrad (>4.8 Mt Cu), 90–280 at Aktogai (>12 Mt Cu), 80–250 at Erdenet (>11 Mt Cu) 74–370 at Nurkazgan (>3.9 Mt Cu), 100–210 at Koksai (>1.6 Mt Cu), and 71–340 at Tuwu (~2.0 Mt Cu). In two small deposits, the ore-bearing rocks display low values of Ce4+/Ce3+; Borly (0.6 Mt Cu) ranging from 28 to 158, and Baogutu (0.6 Mt Cu) from 29 to 113. The Ce4+/Ce3+ ratio of 120 distinguishes large intermediate-size deposits from small-size deposits. Mining & Sustainability? A Paradox?! ? Production: gradually or exponentially increasing (giant mining) ? Ore Grades: gradually declining, ? Open Cut Mining: now widespread, likely to be sustained in the future though the long-term is hard to predict as new mineral deposits are likely to be deeper ? Waste Rock / Overburden: increasing rapidly, likely to be sustained in the future and closely linked to open cut mining, especially for coal and base metals ? Economic Resources: commonly increasing but some remain stable or gradually declining, future is linked closely to exploration, technology and economics; Increasing population, changing life style and technology development, ultimately result in sustainability in mining industry to hang in the balance and continue.

A dynamic testing program was performed to evaluate installation procedures, assess capacity of 610-mm (24-inch) diameter open ended steel pipe to evaluate set-up and provide minimum pile tip elevation based on the dynamic testing results. The program was performed for a marine terminal project consisting of a 570-meter (1900-foot) long, overwater railroad trestle. The project location is Santa Marta, Colombia, South America. The subsurface profile generally consisted of 4m (12 ft.) of water and soft to hard silty clays. The piles were installed to an approximate tip elevation of -22 meters (MSL). Three piles were initially dynamically monitored during installation and then later monitored during restrike driving to evaluate pile drivability and bearing capacity including time related capacity increases due to soil "set-up". Knowledge of change in pile capacity with time after end of initial driving is important for design of pile foundations.
