Mining activities in the territory of Slovakia have a long history. Mining techniques have developed rapidly in the last centuries. This paper deals not only with mining history, but also with underground brown coal mining, magnesite mining and other mining activities at present and sustainable developments of the mining industry in the Slovak Republic. This paper looks forward in the context of mineral raw materials in Europe (Global Europe, 2012).

Although geophysical methods of prospecting have proved indispensable in the search or oil deposits elsewhere; it is only 'in recent years that they have been used to any significant extent in Australia. The increase in their use has been quite remarkable over the past two or three years, due in Sao small measure to the encouragement given by means of Commonwealth subsidy. There is no doubt that the use of' geophysical methods will coxi-tinue to increase and this increase could be greatly accelerated as and when oil is discovered in commercial quantities,This review of their use A in Australia and the remarks and statistics are confined to work on the mainland. There has been, a substantial amount of geophysical work in Papua, but as operating conditions are so very different to the mainland Papua has been regarded as a separate province.

"As mine operators continuously look for ways to improve functionality and increase the capacity of their facilities, existing process equipment is often pushed to and past its designed limitations. As a result, equipment manufacturers are asked for economical solutions to meet redefined processing needs. Newmont Mining in Nevada was faced with such a need in its carbon-in-leach (CIL) train. In a collaborative effort between Newmont and Derrick Corp., tests were conceived to assess the viability of drop-in replacement screens using a three-dimensional screen panel. The synthetic pyramid screen panel was designed to increase flux while maintaining the existing equipment footprint. The test is the end result of an ongoing research and development project that Derrick undertook in an effort to refine and upgrade its urethane screening media. The application of this new screening media is presented for this CIL application along with future plans to implement the technology in trash, safety, carbon dewatering, carbon sizing and other scalping applications.In spring 2014, Process Machinery Associates (PMA), Derrick’s local area representative, met with Newmont to discuss the operation of the in tank screens in the CIL train at Twin Creeks, near Golconda, NV. The process was originally designed for about 12+ kt/d (13,000+ stpd) but the throughput has been steadily rising since the plant was commissioned. Newmont now requires 14.5 kt/d (16,000 stpd) to be processed. The original screens were running at their maximum capacity, and Newmont required additional screening capacity to continue the upward trend in production.Physical separation by use of screening is one of mineral processing’s oldest methods. Screening media can be prone to blinding and pegging, and the necessary support structures required for finer apertures result in smaller open areas. Therefore, more screening area generally requires larger panels and, thus, larger machines, screening media that does not blind or a combination of both.In an effort to avoid larger machines, Derrick had been working on a revolutionary threedimensional panel that would add nonblinding screen area in the same footprint of an existing machine. Alpha testing of the new screen panels began at Newmont Mill 2/5 in July of 2013. It was still occurring when PMA approached Twin Creeks about beta testing a refined machine and pyramid panel. After presenting the initial results, Twin Creeks determined that an upgraded machine and pyramid panels would be a possible solution to meet production needs. The testing of a machine eliminated the risk of capital costs to Newmont and provided Derrick the opportunity to obtain additional data."

The production of petroleum in India (including Burma) increased from 334,811,624 gal.' ill 1936 to 350,322,222 gal. in 1937, the highest figure in the history of the industry. The increase in 1937 was clue to an increase of some 20 million gallons from Singu, 51/2 million gallons from Attack, 11/4 million gallons from Thayetmyo, and 1 mi1lien gallons from Digboi, accompanied by decrcases of 91/2 million gallons from Yenan-gyaung and 2 million gallons from Yenangyat,. The amount of gasoline produced from natural gas during the year was 10,616,313 gal. in Burma and 456,780 gal. in the Punjab. Yenangyaung Field.—The Yenangyaung field maintained its reputation of being one of the most wonderful oil fields in the world. The total production during 1937 was less than in the previous year but the resources of the field as a whole are sufficient to ensure an adequate supply of oil for many years. At the end of 1037 there were 2910 wells producing in the field. Besides a large number of ells drilled to shallow sands, this total includes 180 hand-dug wells, whose continued existenice is one of the interesting features of the field. During the year the deep drilling activities of 1936 in the southern part of the field died down, owing to the disappointing results obtained. On the eastern flank the limit of present economic extension of the oil sands was approximately demareated. Satisfactory results continue to be obtained from gas drives in the leased blocks; gas is also injected for repressuring and storage. Casing policies continue to be carefully designed to protect the oil sands against the danger of flooding by water and, in general, production methods throughout the field are characterized by a realization of the importance of the conservation of oil and gas and the prevention of waste, whether simple or underground. Singu Field.—-In 1937 the increase in the output from the Singu field was continued. This increased production was due not only to the rapid development of the valuable area in the southern part of the field but also to the successful results obtained from the first wells to produce from behind the practically completed river training wall of the Burmah Oil

The discovery of Bromide production in the Fitts field, shallow production in Jackson County of Southwestern Oklahoma, abundant production in the Edmond field, and discovery of many small pools in all parts of the state, were the events that made petroleum history in Oklahoma in 1934. Wildcatting was much more active, as evidenced by a number of new discoveries. There was no important development in the older fields. The rapid decline of the potential of the Oklahoma City field was an important feature of the history of the year. The accompanying tabulation of oil fields (Table 1) is not complete. Many of the early records of operators and pipe line companies are lost and it will be impossible to work up complete statistics for a number of the older fields. The table includes most of the important fields of the state and includes fields of a number of different types. It is hoped that a great many additional fields may be worked up for next year's report. Fitts Pool.—The Fitts pool, in Pontotoc County, was discovered in 1933. Before the middle of 1934, the Pennsylvanian sands yielded -some oil at depths ranging from 1400 to 2800 ft. The Hunton series (Siluro-Devonian) produced most of the oil with considerable gas. In July, 1934, a well in sec. 25, T.2N., R.6E. was completed in the Bromide (Ordovician " Wilcox ") with an initial production of about 300 bbl. a day. Less than a month later a second Bromide sand well was completed in sec. 30, T.2N., R.7E., which made over 200 bbl. an hour. This started an active drilling campaign, which was accelerated when some of the major companies paid good prices for adjacent acreage. At the end of the year, 23 wells had been completed and the rate of development was increasing rapidly. It is a major oil field. The Fitts pool opened a new geological province for oil production. The structure is a faulted anticline in a graben. The producing formation (Bromide) and the Arbuckle lime below it crop out about 2 miles south of present production. The Hunton lime crops out about 2½ miles north. The field is in a sharply folded and faulted area on the northeast side of the Arbuckle uplift. Heretofore, it was generally considered not favorable for oil production, although some gas had been found in various places. "The object of the paper is to discuss the developments in Carbon-In-Pulp (C.I.P.) technology for gold recovery. The CIP process is comprised of four major operations:(a) adsorption of precious metals onto activated carbon;(b) elution (stripping) of precious metals from the loaded carbon;(c) electrowinning of the precious metals from the concentrated eluate;(d) regeneration of the eluted carbon before recycle to the adsorption process.A detailed review of the technological developments in each of the above operations is presented together with a brief theoretical background of the underlying processes. The advantages and disadvantages of the CIP process are discussed in comparison with conventional zinc precipitation. IntroductionThe carbon-in-pulp (CIP) process involves the use of activated carbon for treatment of pulps containing dissolved precious metals, and provide s an alternative to the conventional gold recover y processes using filtration or counter-current decantation in conjunction with the Merrill-Crowe zinc precipitation process. The commercial application o f the CIP process in gold processing technology is a fairly recent development and it is of growing importance around the world.The fact that activated carbon ha s the property of adsorbing precious metals from solution was first published in 1847. In the following years , a great deal of work was carried out to develop an over-all recover y process using carbon, but all attempts were uneconomical because the loaded carbon had to be smelted to recover the gold.It was not until 1950 that Zadra, at the United States Bureau of Mines Research Centre in Reno, Nevada, developed a technique for stripping the loaded carbon using sodium sulphite-sodium hydroxide mixtures and then recovering the gold from the stripping solution by electrolysis. However, this process was not effective for stripping silver and further testwork was carried out on alternative stripping techniques. In 1952, Zadra published a paper describing the use of a hot sodium hydroxide- sodium cyanide stripping technique, which was effective in stripping both gold and silver. This paper included a description and flowsheet for the CIP process which is essentially the same as we know it today. This technique was used in the first major CIP plant, constructed and commissioned in 1973 by Hornestake Gold Mining Company. Since then there have been numerous CIP plants built in the U.S A., South Africa and Australia."

The increase in drilling activities in Venezuela noted during the latter half of 1932 continued, and 132 wells were completed in 1933 as compared to only 60 completed during 1932. Notwithstanding these new wells, 114 of which were producers, and also the appreciable increase in artificial lifting installations during the year, Venezuelan production was maintained at only a slightly higher level than in 1932, amounting to 120,356,000 bbl. in 1933 as compared to 118,167,000 bbl. in 1932. However, at the end of the year the daily average production of 358,-860 bbl. was 16 per cent higher than that at the end of 1932. INT'RODUCTION An appreciable number of the oil fields in Western Canada are accumulations of heavy black oils in more or less unconsolidated sandstones. When the crude oils are produced by conventional means, they are frequently contaminated with both sand and oilfield water. The water is usually present as emulsified water, and the sand and other solid materials are suspended in the emulsions. The presence of the solid material in the crude oils is troublesome and, in general, little is known about the behavior of suspended solid particles in emulsions. The Stokes equation describes the behavior of suspended particles in homogeneous fluids in terms of particle size, density differential, and fluid viscosity. In the case of an emulsion, particle size and density differential introduce no difficulties, but considerable doubt centers around the viscosity term. It has been reported1 that the viscosity of an emulsion is related to the viscosity of the continuous phase by an expression of the type: n = a, (1 + a C) where n is the viscosity of the emulsion, n,, is the viscosity of the continuous phase, a is a constant, C' is the volume concentration of the disperse phase. The value of 17, the coefficient of the concentration term, has been determined for various systems, and has been found to vary from a value of 1 to 4.75. The value of 2.5 has been found to be applicable to a large number of systems, and this is the value that is widely used in the equation which then becomes the Einstein equation for the viscosity of emuls~ons. It is of considerable significance that neither the particle size nor the viscosity of the disperse phase enters the expression; the expression for the viscosity of the enlulsion is based solely upon the viscosity of the continuous phase and the concentration of the disperse phase. For crude oil emulsions the Simha equation and the data presented by Fukushima and lchimurai show a non-linear dependence of the viscosity ratio on the water concentration. While it is undoubtedly reasonable to use these data for predicting the viscosity of a specific emulsion, and while it is equally reasonable to expect the calculated viscosity to predict the settling rate of a solid spherical particle in the emulsion by means of Stokes equation, there seems to be no direct evidence that this calculation is indeed sound for describing the settling rates of solid particles in emulsions of water in crude oils. PROCEDURE A direct approach to the problem was thus indicated. Laboratory equipment was designed and built for the direct determination of the rate-of-fall characteristics of solid particles in emulsions of water in oil. Although the apparatus incorporated the basic design of conventional falling-ball viscometers, the study was concerned directly with the rate-of-fall characteristics of particles in emulsions, rather than with the viscosity of the emulsions as such. The crude oil used in this study was a very heavy black crude oil—the McMurray oil obtained from oil-soaked sands outcropping on the Athabasca River in northeastern Alberta. It was produced from the sands by strip mining followed by hot-water separation of the oil in the separation plant of the Alberta Government at Bitumount'. The primary plant product was a wet crude oil containing about 5 per cent solids and 35 per cent water. The final plant product was only slightly different from the native oil, having lost only about 4 per cent of its bulk as light ends during dehydration distillations. In the present investigation two kerosene dilutions of the McMurray oil were used in addition to the dry plant product. The McMurray oil contained 1.92 per cent solids. Analysis of the solids by X-ray diffraction showed the presence of kaolinite, pyrite, and illite as major constituents. with lesser amounts of quartz. Both drilling and production in Rumania showed increases in 1934 over 1933. The drilling totaled 1,138,000 ft. and production 63,500,-000 bbl., being increases of 50 and 15 per cent, respectively. During the year production gradually increased from 155,000 bbl. per day in January to 180,000 bbl. in September, and then declined slightly to the end of the year. The increases were largely due to competitive drilling in the Gura Ocnitei field (including west extension to Viforata). Wells completed during the year totaled 238, of which 215 were oil producers. The outstanding development of the year was the discovery by Steaua Romana of what appears to be a major field at Bucsani. Other important discoveries were a three-mile west extension of the Gura Ocnitei fault to Viforata and a five-mile east extension of the Moreni field to Calinesti. Strictly speaking, the latter cannot as yet be called an extension. Oil sands have been corded in the Meotic, and in all probability production will be established in 1935. The broad picture of petroleum refining engineering during 1934 continued to show a tendency in the direction of highly specialized processing improvements, particularly in manufacture of lubricating oil. The slowing up of the trend toward higher octane products in non-premium gasoline noticed in 1933 was definitely established as a fact by 1934 development, with just a slight indication of recession. No outstanding engineering achievements can be credited to 1934 in refinery cracking, unless the completion and successful operation of the 30,000-bbl. crude capacity combination cracking and skimming unit at Texas City, Texas, and a 20,000-bbl. similar unit in the East can be listed as such. Development and improvement was largely a continuation of previous lines of endeavor. Such trend as there is shows a continnation in the direction of very large integrated skimming and cracking units. A lessening of the cost of ethyl lead, coupled with the reaching of the octane number "ceiling," kept the subject of "reforming" low-octane gasoline into high-octane products pretty well in the background. Considerable interest, however, was shown during the year in cracking and polymerizing of refinery gases into high-octane motor fuel. The commercial development and application of this activity was greater in 1934 than during any previous year. Fair yields of gasoline of satisfactory stability and high antiknock value were reported, ranging from 2 to 8 gal. per 1000 cu. ft. of fixed refinery gas, yields varying with both the nature of refinery gas treated and processing methods. Assuming economic feasibility, regarding which there is still difference of opinion, gas polymerization offers the industry a possible outlet for its gases more in keeping with its basic chemical composition and value. The increased interest of railroads and heavy-duty truck and tractor manufacturers served to focus more attention on diesel fuels. The publicity given the Union Pacific diesel train, the Burlington "Zephyr" and others operated on special diesel fuels served to revive the intimations and fears of several years ago as to the ultimate replacement of the gasoline motor by diesel engines in even the passenger car field. In Toyoha mine near Sapporo, the ground temperature is very high, perhaps due to inflow of hot mineral water, the origin of which may be rock masses intruded by the igneous activity in the Tertiary period. The rock masses are found about 2 km east of the mine, their temperature being estimated at from 770 to 870 K at a depth of 3 km. In this mine several veins bearing zinc and lead ores have been mined down to the depth of 300 m from the level of the main entry, of which altitude is 551 m above the sea level. Formerly no attempt was made at development of the deeper part of the mine than the 350 m level from the main entry. Let us indicate hereafter the levels in this mine in such a way that the level 300 m deep from the main entry is denoted as 300 mL. Since 1974, however, the 450 mL of Tajima vein has been developed by deepening No. 5 Shaft to, and by driving drifts in the level. Much hot mineral water has been flowing into the drifts from rock. After twenty-eight months from the beginning of development, the total length of excavation amounted to about 1300 m. The success in development so far may be attributed to cooling rock and air with chilled water and to adopting heat-resisting explosives and detonators. This cooling costed very much and for further development in this level a more effective and economical cooling is desired if possible. To obtain fundamental data for designing an economical cooling, the authors investigated, as a preliminary study, the heat balance in the main drift of 450 mL, by measuring the temperatures of air, rock, hot mineral water, the rates of flow of air and water and so on, in August 1976. They are now carrying out continual measurements of the variations in rock temperature, air temperature and humidity with time. The present paper describes the details of the preliminary study.

"INTRODUCTIONPine Point Mines, operated by Cominco Ltd., is located approximately 55 miles east of Hay River, N.W.T. by the southern shore of Great Slave Lake.The milling operation commenced in the fall of 1965 at a design capacity of 5,000 tpd. An addition which came on stream late in 1968 raised the nominal capacity to 8,000 tpd. Currently the milling rate is 11,000 tpd.The lead and zinc sulphides occur in dolomite host rock. Typical feed grades at present are 2% lead, 5.5% zinc and 5 % iron. When dolomite is present even in relatively minor amounts in the zinc concentrate, it presents serious treatment problems and causes inefficient operation of electrolytic zinc refineries.By 1972, it had become apparent that magnesium rejection in the form of dolomite was deteriorating because of increased plant throughput of less amenable ore. This paper will briefly outline the Pine Point zinc flotation circuit and will discuss the two phase program for reducing the magnesium level in the zinc concentrate. The program included changes and alterations to the flotation circuit and the construction of an acid leaching plant."

Up until a few years ago most of the electrical equipment used in the mines of this country was developed for industrial purposes and was adapted for use in mines by slight modifications. It became apparent, however, that mining conditions differed widely from most industrial applications and it became necessary to design and develop apparatus, particularly suited for use under mining conditions. Most of the electrical apparatus used in mines today, however, does not owe its success entirely to mining development, but in many cases developments in other branches have been taken and improved upon and modified to meet mining conditions. Power Plant: In the earlier days the power plant for the production of electric power usually consisted of fairly small belt driven direct current generators operated from reciprocating non-condensing steam engines. Today where possible the mines purchase power from central stations and where not possible it is ususally produced from turbine driven plants using non-condensing turbines for the smaller plants and condensing turbines for the larger plants. The bad water conditions at many of the coal mines in this country is, responsible in a large measure for the high cost of upkeep and repairs in isolated power plants. This feature with the type of labor available makes it difficult to operate an isolated plant condensing except in the larger mines where water conditions are good and the apparatus can be taken care of. The geared turbine is a particularly simple and rugged piece of apparatus and requires very little attention over long periods of time. Hoists: The first electric hoists to be installed used various types of motors designed for railway or industrial purposes, and the control furnished was far from satisfactory. Today most of the mine hoist motors are of the alternating current type, especially designed for hoisting service. The control for motors of 200 H. P. or over is usually of the magnetic of liquid rheostat type, and as built today will operate over fairly long periods with a very moderate cost of up-keep. Hoists of 1000 H. P. or larger are usually of the direct current type using field control and receiving power from a flywheel or synchronous M. G. set. Hoists of this type have made remarkable records in regard to continuity of operation and low cost of up-keep. Where high speed operation is desired in either coal or metal mines, the D. C. equipment using field control and a separate M. G. set to supply power to the hoist motor is not only the safest and most economical but in many cases is the only type of equipment capable of satisfactorily obtaining the output required. A number of improvements have been brought out with the field control scheme in connection with the acceleration, retardation, overfeed and overwind of the hoist. With these new developments the hoist operator can no longer abuse the hoist by improper manipulation of the control handle. Until a few years ago the matter of safety devices was not given much consideration when installing hoisting equipment. Since the comprehensive review of the Persian fields presented by Sir John Cadman last year, operations have proceeded normally. No developments of especial importance fall to be recorded and it remains only to bring up to date the full information given at the beginning of 1933. Controlled production from the Masjid-i-Sulaiman and Haft Kel fields has been maintained at slightly higher rates than during 1932. The figures for the past five years are as follows: These represent crude oil and products piped to the coast but exclude products reinjected into the reservoir, a process that has been in continuous operation at Masjid-i-Sulaiman during the period under review. The systematic delimitation of the Haft Kel field has been continued during the past year and results have been sufficiently encouraging to justify the inception of a wider scheme for distribution of production. Drilling has been resumed recently in the Persian sector of the Naft Khaneh field, and preliminary survey work is in progress for the selection of a site for a refinery at Kermanshah arid the construction of a connecting pipe line. Investigations in connection with the scientific control of reservoir were dealt with in considerable detail in last year's review. This work has been steadily pursued during 1933 and certain of the investigations have been the subject of papers presented to the World Petroleum Congress held in London in July of last year.

Oil was discovered in Nebraska on Nov. I, 1939, when the Pawnee Royalty Company's Boice No. I well, about 3 miles west of Falls City (NE 1/4 NE 1/4, sec. 18, T.r N., R.16 E., Richardson County) was drilled into the Hunton formation but the develop-ment of the area took place during 1940. After a pumping test lasting 18 days, the Boice well stopped producing and failed to qualify for the State bonus of $ 15,000 offered for the first oil well to produce go bbl. per day for 60 consecutive days. On May 9, 1940, the Pawnee Royalty Company's Bucholz No. I well was completed about M mile southeast of the discovery well and flowed at the rate of about 330 bbl. per day, easily meeting the State bonus requirements. In addition to the discovery well, which later was reconditioned, and the bonus well, 28 producers were drilled in the Falls City field during 1940. Of these wells, 23 are in sec. 20, two are in the northern part 'of sec. 29, two in the southwestern part of sec. 17 and three in the eastern part of sec.

The potential energy available in domestic wastes, in developed countries, could be upwards of 4% of their total energy needs. I, 1939, when the Pawnee Royalty Company's Boice No. I well, about 3 miles west of Falls City (NE 1/4 NE 1/4, sec. 18, T.r N., R.16 E., Richardson County) was drilled into the Hunton formation but the develop-ment of the area took place during 1940. After a pumping test lasting 18 days, the Boice well stopped producing and failed to qualify for the State bonus of $ 15,000 offered for the first oil well to produce go bbl. per day for 60 consecutive days. On May 9, 1940, the Pawnee Royalty Company's Bucholz No. I well was completed about M mile southeast of the discovery well and flowed at the rate of about 330 bbl. per day, easily meeting the State bonus requirements. In addition to the discovery well, which later was reconditioned, and the bonus well, 28 producers were drilled in the Falls City field during 1940. Of these wells, 23 are in sec. 20, two are in the northern part 'of sec. 29, two in the southwestern part of sec. 17 and three in the eastern part of sec.

Systems for the routine on-line determination of ash content of process streams in coal preparation plants and handling systems have been in use in Australia for over four years. More recently, monitors for on-line moisture measurement have been developed to complement the ash measurement function. The technology for these systems is reviewed briefly. The development of reliable ash and moisture monitors has made the implementation of automatic systems of coal quality control practical. The emerging philosophies of automatic control in Australian preparation plants are examined with particular emphasis on systems involving dense medium circuit regulation. Related developments in flotation control and coal sorting are noted to complete this overview.

The isotherms that are usually taken to represent the force 'driving' the adsorption in carbon-in-pulp processes may change from contactor to contactor. This paper reports on an investigation into the extent to which this Isotherm shift is Influenced by the changes in oxygen and cyanide concentration that occur in operating plants. The impact of the isotherm shift on the reliability of simulation results is examined.
