A high purity electrolysis solution is essential for hydrometallurgical zinc winning processes. For this reason ferric iron containing compounds such as jarosite are precipitated as iron and impurity collector during the calcine leaching. Jarosite thus forms a chemical waste and creates environmental problems. This research contributes to the development of a wet jarosite treatment process, where less contaminated jarosite is produced which can act as an iron source. The present work studies jarosite precipitation kinetics and the uptake of zinc cations in batch and continuous experiments. The distribution coefficient for zinc in continuous experiments is constant for a wide ratio of zinc over ferric ions in the solution. Addition of NH, + ions in batch experiments accelerates the conversion rate equivalent to the driving force increment. Addition of 50,2-ions above the stoichiometric ratio increases the conversion rate less then could be expected from the increase in the estimated driving force. Zinc ions tend to retard the conversion rate. An increasing reaction temperature increases the conversion rate. Below 75 ?C the conversion rate approximates zero.

The economics of the asbestos mining industry of Canada, and the physical and chemical characteristics of asbestos fibre, as well as exploration, mining, milling and quality control methods, have been described by several authors in the past few years. The scope of this presentation is to survey the application of asbestos fibres in the major product groups of the construction industry in North America. Principal categories considered include flooring materials, asbestos-cement pipes and building products, high-temperature insulation, textiles, saturated asbestos felts and asphalt com pounds. During 1962, the asbestos mining industry of Canada produced an estimated 1.3 million tons of chrysotile fibre grades, and production capacity is expanding. The market demand for chrysotile fibre, on this continent, has been in the order of 50 per cent of the production volume. The asbestos industry is dependent for growth on the construction industry. Product research is active in finding new uses for asbestos fibre; some of the new developments are presented, including the use of short-fibre asbestos grades for extending the life of asphalt pavement.

Introduction The theoretical analysis of tumbling mill energetics and performance has largely neglected mill dimensionality, and, in particular, the importance of the length/diameter (L/D) ratio. This is in spite of the fact that practice varies substantially: geographically, for semi-autogenous and autogenous mills, as between North America and South Africa/Scandinavia, and historically, for overflow ball mills, for which the L/D ratio has increased significantly from the earliest small mills to the largest mills currently. The present study is concerned primarily with the influence of the L/D ratio on the design and operation of overflow ball mills, on the occurrence of the overload phenomenon, and on the limits, if any, it may impose on mill capacities because of critical pulp axial velocity limits. It will be shown that the shape factor is of major importance in this area and that its adjustment to the extent that this is practical should remove the diameter limitations previously postulated for this mill type. Dimensionality in mill design Ball mill shape factors in the period prior to 1927 (Taggart, 1927) averaged 1.1/1 for 29 center discharge mills and 1.0/1 for 30 peripheral discharge mills. With the resumption of new plant construction after the 1930s depression, the Morenci concentrator continued the 1/1 ratio with its 3.1 x 3.1 m (10 x 10 ft) mills. The ratio was increased progressively from then on, reaching 1.6 and 1.8/1 for the largest overflow mills currently. As shown recently (Arbiter, 1989), this is in sharp contrast to autogenous and SAG mill shapes, for which the ratio averages 0.4 in North America. On the other hand, South African practice, starting at the turn of the century with autogenous mills having 4/1 ratios, moved toward 1/1 until recently, when a 2.5/ 1 ratio mill was installed. The reasons given for such divergent practice for mill shape factors are in some respects contradictory and generally inconclusive. The most complete discussion from a practical viewpoint (Dor and Bassarear, 1982) is limited to primary SAG and autogenous mills. Considerations of ball mill dimensionality have had a twofold direction. On the one hand, it has been argued that ball mill efficiencies should increase with increasing diameter and that the specific energy for a particular grind should be reduced accordingly. An inadvertent test of this idea at the Bougainville operation (Burns and Erskine, 1983) resulted in drastic underpowering, which led to failure to reach design capacity until additional mills were installed. This can be taken as strong evidence against any increase in efficiency with diameter. In another direction, it has been argued (Arbiter and Harris, 1982, 1983) that there is a limit to ball mill diameters because of the demonstrable limit to axial flow velocities evident in the overload phenomenon, which as a fact is incontrovertible. But that it places a limit on mill diameters overlooks the evidence given below that appropriate variation in the L/D ratio will permit major increases in diameter, limited only by constructional or economic factors. The present study was directed toward quantifying the overload phenomenon through examination of the influence of mill dimensionality variation and mill operating variables on its occurrence. It is shown that varying the operating conditions, specifically the load fraction and the fraction critical speed, can reduce the risk of overload for existing operations; while appropriate decreases in the L/D ratio can minimize the risk in the design of new circuits. Ball mill overload Ball mill overload is a consequence of the approach to a critical velocity with increasing feed rates or circulating loads. Although the effect has been known for over 50 years, there have been no previous attempts to quantify it. The following description of the ball mill as a flow system is the preliminary to a quantitative analysis: 1) In the absence of a ball load, axial flow of pulp through a mill resembles open channel flow, except for disturbances near the shell due to shell/lifter rotation. 2) For a given ball load (Lf), the void fraction available for pulp hold-up (H) for the ascending portion of the load is approximately 0.4 Lf. In the descending portion, it is greater than this and increases with fraction critical speed (Fc) because of load expansion. 3) Increasing the feed rate increases pulp hold-up and progressively fills the available void space. At a critical flow rate, which depends on system geometry, hydraulic head and pulp rheology, void filling reaches its limit; a pool forms rapidly and fills available space outside the ball load and up to the overflow level. Prior to this, pulp discharges mainly along the ascending rim of the overflow. 4) For a small mill (Lo et al., 1990), it has been shown that with increasing feed rates the critical filling is at or near 50% of the mill volume. Power drops rapidly when this level is reached, as required by the torque formula. 5) The transition to overload is associated with the following phenomena: a) The decrease in power draw. b) Damping of mill sound. c) Reduced comminution of coarser feed sizes, probably due to reduced direct impact in the presence of a pool. d) Increased circulating loads, which further intensify the overload, and increased density of cyclone underflows, which can lead to roping. e) Conditions beyond overload are not known because feed rates are not delibelrately increased beyond this point. f) The existence of the phenomenon limits the capacity of a mill with a fixed set of operating conditions and can prevent the balancing of hard ore feed rate decreases by increases in soft ore rates.

"An investigation into the problem of atmospheric fog in Canadian mines is described. Fog occurs in several mines and the reduced visibility can result in the closure of workings for safety reasons. Information on the mechanisms of fog formation are discussed and the methods for improving conditions are reviewed with their relative costs.INTRODUCTIONAtmospheric fog occurs in several Canadian mines during spring and summer. The fog which reduces visibility, contributes to loss of production and increased accident risk . Closure of ramps in mechanized mines causes mining to be stopped or rescheduled, and stoping and grade control may be affected . Increased corrosion of equipment may result from acidic fog .Fog is commonly caused by saturated air being compressed and heated by an inlet fan and then being circulated in an ascensional system with heat transfer to the walls of wet airways. This causes supersaturation and water droplets condense to create fog, with liquid water contents of 0.5 g/kg to 3 g/kg of air. These concentrations reduce visibility to less than 10m and prevent mining. Less severe fog is usually tolerated as a nuisance, about which little can be done."

Six case histories are presented in which tall, slender high rises are supported on high capacity minicaissons. The recent development of a high strength rebar cage has resulted in compressive loads of up to 3400 kips on 24 inch diameter minicaissons. Provisions in the pending NYC building code will allow borehole video inspection in lieu of load testing. The ?new? technology results from the marriage of several well established methods: rotary duplex well drilling, high capacity micropiles and high capacity reinforced concrete building columns.

FROM a study of sulfur with reference to its specific combination in coal, published as University of Illinois Bulletin No. 111, 1919, it is now possible to determine the various forms of this constituent with a good degree of accuracy. This fact suggests two questions: (1) Are the same analytic methods applicable to coke? (2) Is there any correlation between the forms of sulfur as it occurs in coal and the residual sulfur found in the finished coke? The answer to the second question might be helpful in answering a still further question as to what chemical route the sulfur travels during the carbonization process. While the special studies along these several lines are by no means complete, a few preliminary statements are herewith presented. They may, at least, prove suggestive of further possibilities from a continuation of research along these lines. There is no reason, chemically, why the analytic methods devised for coal should not apply to coke and a fair amount of experience in connection with such use affords confirmation of this statement. The procedure in the case of coal may be briefly outlined as follows; Combinations of sulfur as sulfate, or sulfides other than FeS2, are readily dissolved without disturbing either the pyrite sulfur or the sulfur that is in organic combination by means of dilute hydrochloric, acid-1 part of concentrated HC1 to 10 parts of water or approximately 3 per cent. acid. Digestion at 60° C. for 24 hr. insures the complete removal of the sulfur thus combined. In freshly mined coal the amount of such sulfur is very small; weathering processes, however, may very materially increase the amount of sulfate present.

Increasing the strength of backfill has been the subject of much research. In the former Soviet Union most methods concentrated on the fill mixture including chemical additives, binder re-grinding, water electromagnetic activation and the use of vibration and turbulent activation. For the most part, this research has been confined to the laboratory where the results were not representative of field conditions. These methods also were directed at increasing the mass strength and were not specifically aimed at strengthening the fill where it may subsequently be exposed for instance on the side or underneath as it required for underhand cut and fill methods of mining. In the Republic of Armenia, a method of fill strengthening known as electro-activation has been adopted. The deposit it an epithermal gold deposit which to-date has been mined using underhand cut and fill with timber support. The backfill comprises cement and pumice placed in 2.5 m lifts. Central to the method of electro-activation is the placement of the electrodes in the stope in which the polarity and the electrical potential are changing during filling. The process promotes the binding of the fill layers, the bond to the side walls and to the adjacent fill. There is a significant increase in the compressive and tensile strength. The process has been used with beneficial effects on reinforced concrete and could be used in any mine utilising hardening fills.

Current over-capacity in coal production provides assured and relatively low-cost supplies to coal importers. At the same time, it is of serious concern to coal producers who invested considerable sums in the expectation that overseas demand would continue to grow rapidly. This paper assesses the reserves available for export, the export facilities, the coal supplies which can be put through them, and the market prospects for the future. It assumes, rightly or wrongly, that there will be no major and prolonged disruptions in supply from any major sources of coal. COAL RESERVES FOR EXPORT Economically recoverable reserves in the non-communist world amount to about 470 billion tonnes. These are sufficient to sustain current production levels of 2 billion tonnes a year for 235 years.

Within the next, year or two, Western Canada should overtake Mexico and France. to become the worlds second largest producer of elemental sulphur, surpassed only by the United States, By 1965, it should produce about 25% of the world's total elemental production and, about 10% of sulphur produced in all forms. In 1952 Alberta had but one small sulphur recovery plant. By 1962, it had fifteen plants with a total designed capacity of almost 6,000 long tons of sulphur per day and actual production of almost one million long tons per year. This decade of dynamic growth was the result of Alberta's rapidly developing natural gas industry. More particularly it was the result of approval in 1960 to export natural gas in large volumes into the United States. Prior approval to export gas from Alberta to eastern Canada and relatively modest volumes to the U. S. had resulted in the construction of several plants but none were of the scale required to serve the U. S. market.

The occurrence of the manganiferous variety of wolframite at a new locality in Arizona was announced in the month of May last." It occurs in the granite hills of the Dragoon mountains, in Cochise county, about 6 miles north of Dragoon Summit station, on the Southern Pacific Railway of Arizona. It is found in veins of white quartz, traversing a coarsely crystalline granitic gneiss, and, so far as yet determined, is without association with other metallic minerals in the same veins, except small quantities of scheelite. It is a very pure form of the mineral, and contains but little iron, the base being manganese oxide. The color is brownish-red; it is nearly the same as the color of the mineral originally described by E. Riotte from Mammoth District, Nevada.† Thin films or plates on the broad cleavage-surfaces, and thin cleavage-flakes, seen by transmitted light, are ruby-red, or rather more like the color of red zinc oxide or the mineral known as clintonite. The Fort Canning Tunnel, Singapore, is an approximately 50 feet (15m) wide vehicular tunnel under shallow ground cover that has been constructed according to the principles of the NATM. Its shallow location in soft ground combined with a high groundwater elevation in close vicinity of historically important features called for special design considerations combined with a rigorous monitoring scheme. Surface, sub-surface and in-tunnel instrumentation was installed to monitor the performance of the ground and tunnel support during construction. Comparison of actual reading data with the results from the computer modeling carried out during the design phase is provided in this paper.

TEMPERATURE measurement in wells is an old practice and geothermal gradients have been of interest to geologists for many years.1,2 Their application to the operation of oil wells is a more recent practice. It has long been recognized that temperature anomalies occur in drilling and producing wells but thermometers that could obtain a satisfactory record of the anomalies were not available.3 The normal geothermal gradient is con-sidered as being about one degree Fahren-heit for each 60 ft. of depth.4 This "nor-mal" gradient varies in different areas, but whatever it may be in an area there is little variation from the surface to as deep as the drill penetrates. The normal gradient is appreciably changed by gas expanding from the reservoir into the borehole or by the movement of fluid through a borehole while drilling, producing, or circulating. It is the resulting anomalies and abnormal gradients from which conditions in wells can be interpreted. Some of the applications of such interpretations are locating the position of oil or gas sands, permeable strata in a reservoir zone, gas-oil contact, source of water, casing leaks, and the top of cement behind casing.

A distinctive feature of the goldfields of Victoria was the extrac- tion of gold from deep leads, that is the buried river beds of Vic- toria's ancient rivers and streams. It is estimated that about 265,000 kg of gold was produced from Victoria's deep lead mines which comprises about 11.5% of Victoria's total production of gold (Bowen, 1974). The significance of deep lead mining for Victoria, however, went far beyond its economic contribution to Victoria. If Profes- sor Blainey is correct it was the frustrations of mining gold from deep alluvial leads in Ballarat during 1854 which precipitated the Eureka Stockade (Blainey, 1963, 46-52). This event resulted in the implementation of a fair mining administration and was an emphatic statement of the rise of democratic movements in Australia. Much of the technology and skill for mining deep leads had to be developed locally because at that time no other major gold- field elsewhere in Australia or the world had gold deposits with comparable problems. Deep lead mining in Victoria was there- fore largely a home grown industry and the equipment for that industry was often designed and produced in Victoria.

A continuous casting machine, of the Concast curved mould design casting billets in four strands, was commissioned at the Newcastle Works of The Broken Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd., in November, 1967. Quality assessment of early casts from this plant indicated that steel cleanliness was sometimes inferior to that of equival- ent ingot cast steel. Extensive trials to develop a modified deoxidation technique were not successful in improving clean- liness to the desired level. A "contra-flow" gas shroud, to cover the steel stream between the tundish and the mould, was developed, and proved successful in achieving the required levels of product cleanliness. The inclusion content of six grades of steel ranging in carbon content from 0.10 to 0.70 per cent is examined, and an attempt is made to explain theoretically some of the results obtained.

ALTHOUGH Gaudin1 and more recently Sutherland2 have calculated the probability of collision of a falling mineral particle with a rising bubble, there is no published information concerning the details of the mechanism of attachment of a collector-coated particle to a bubble. During the past year the writer has developed a theory for the mechanism of attachment, which has been substantiated experimentally.' Funds for the investigation and for some of the equipment used have been supplied by the Mines Experiment Station of the University of Minnesota. Motion picture studies of the phenomena involved in the collision between mineral particles and bubbles, such as those of Spedden and Hannan,3 show that the contact can be completed within 0.3 millisec. Formulas developed for rigid bodies have hitherto been used' for the calculation of the motion of bubble and particle, but it is obvious that a bubble cannot be regarded as a rigid body. On the contrary, Spedden and Hannan's pictures show a great degree of deformation during the collision. The time of attachment was calculated as the time the particle drifted past the bubble. Time of Collision The theory presented in this paper enables calculation of the time of collision; using the concept that the bubble, or more generally, a liquid-air interface, acts as an elastic body. The elasticity, defined as the restoring force on a mechanical deformation, is caused by, the surface tension and is the result of the principle of the minimum of free surface energy. It is well known that an elasticity together with a mass determines a frequency of vibration. The vibrations of jets and drops caused by the elasticity of the interface are known to comply exactly with the classical theory of capillarity.5 However, the vibrations of isolated bubbles, as distinct from foams, have not been investigated previously. The following equation, presented elsewhere,' has been deduced for these frequencies: [3fB = 9.20•'./V•Vn- (n-1) • (n+2) /8[1]] in which fB is the frequency of a harmonic of the bubble in cycles per second, V the volume of the bubble in cc, n a number determining the order of the harmonic, and n = 2 the basic vibration. The first (basic) harmonic describes a change of the spherical bubble to an ellipsoidal bubble. The higher harmonics are more complicated, for the circumference of the bubble is divided approximately into as many parts' as the order of the harmonic. As an example, Spedden and Hannan's published motion picture of, a vibrating bubble corresponds to the sixth harmonic. Eq 1 shows that only the first and third harmonics are simple multiples (1 and 3), all the others being irrational fractions of the basic frequency. This means that the shape of the vibration can change with time and is in general unsymmetric in respect to the time axis. Such conditions prevail when there is a distributed elasticity or mass, as in the case of vibrating membranes or rods. The constant 9.20 is valid for water at room temperature, but a general solution involving the physical constants of the liquid has not been found. The case of the floating particle is much easier to treat I than that of the bubble. It can be assumed that the elasticity is caused exclusively by the interface and that the mass is concentrated in the particle together with some adhering water. The following expression for the frequency of a system, of one degree of freedom can be applied: [1E/m[2] fP = 27] Here f, is the frequency of the particle vibration in cycles per second, E the elasticity in dynes per cm, and m the mass in grams. The classical theory of impact phenomena gives the time of collision during the striking of a spring (in this case the surface of the bubble) by a mass, as: [t~ = 2/f = 7r\/m/E[3]] It is now possible to develop an expression for the elasticity of a floating cylindrical particle. "In atomic emission and atomic absorption spectrophotometry, the sample is heated to a high temperature and thereby decomposed into atoms and ions that absorb or emit visible or ultraviolet electromagnetic radiation at energies characteristic of the elements involved. The flame test is a very simple form of this technique. The yellowing of a flame by the addition of salt, for example, occurs because the sodium in salt emits strongly in the yellow portion of the visible spectrum. These methods are especially useful for low concentrations of metallic elements in both qualitative and quantitative analysis.Interference on Iep-OES has not always been considered a serious problem, especially in the beginning, when compared with Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy. This was due to the euphoria created by the new technique. It meant that criticism was subdued. The Iep was vastly superior to the Atomic Absorption technique, that the interferences suffered by the Atomic Absorption technique dwarfed the little interferences suffered by the rep-OES technique. This is how rep-OES has had a reputation as an interference free technique."

Polymers of a wide variety of composition are used in coal and mineral beneficiation. Applications include flocculation and coagulation in thickeners, filtration enhancement, mill scale control, dust control, ore leaching improvement, and pond management. The proper chemistry of the polymer is determined by many factors, including the nature of the process, mineral type, and respective performance requirements. This paper provides an overview of the various current applications of polymers in mineral processing, and a description of the applicable polymer chemistries which find utility in these applications. Examples of structure/performance relationships are discussed.

"The classical approach to control rock fall and ravel in open pit mining has been to use catch benches. The width and volume of benches is most dependent on the bench height, size of loading equipment, blast damage to the face and mining regulations. This was compatible with open pit slopes of less than approximately 45 degrees.As our understanding of rock mechanics and blasting control has improved over recent years, much steeper rock slopes can be developed at many open pit mines. However, narrower benches result in less rock fall capacity.The transportation industry has been very successful in using catch fences to protect highways throughout North America and Europe for years. The authors recommend that cable and ring net fences have a potential major application in open pit mining to allow steeper rock slopes with significant economic benefit. This paper outlines the application, design and operation of catch fences in surface mining for specific conditions. Typical case examples are presented."

This paper considers some of the main aspects of underground mining in the flat, rich, but deep lying deposits of Saskatchewan. It briefly describes the pertinent geological features as they relate co mining and the practical de-stressing techniques used to allow productive extraction in the high stress environment present in many of the province's mines.
