The splitting of the coal by partings is a familiar feature of many coal beds. The partings are normally argillaceous, more rarely sandy or calcareous. The material is usually fine-grained, less frequently coarse-grained to conglomeratic. Many partings are wedge-shaped, others are lenticular, and in some coal beds thin partings but one or two inches thick persist as thin sheets throughout areas of regional extent. The origin of the partings differs, and in some cases is obscure and uncertain. Origin of Thick Partings Wedge-shaped Partings Wedge-shaped partings are normally of indefinite linear extent but of short transverse section. They are developed adjacent to the borders of the original peat-forming swamp or around islands formed within the swamp, hence their presence is indicative of the approximate limit of the coal bed or of an interruption in the continuity of the coal bed. Following deposition of the parting gradual reestablishment of swamp conditions is followed by burial of the parting with accumulating peat. Partings developed adjacent to the borders of swamps normally thicken toward the periphery of the swamp and represent either detrital materials carried in from adjacent land areas during floods or materials carried in by advancing waves and currents after a barrier confining the swamp had been breached by the waves. Partings formed in the manner first mentioned should become coarser and more arenaceous toward the source of supply of the detrital materials, and the overlying and underlying coal should gradually grade into carbonaceous shale as the margin of the original swamp is approached. Partings formed by advance of waves across a barrier should be largely or entirely arenaceous, thin wedges of short longitudinal section, possibly with fossils of marine or brackish affinity. The subjacent coal normally should "pinch out" against the barrier, and the overlying coal continue to the barrier, or even extend across it, depending on the geographic conditions established following the breaching of the original barrier. SOME interesting and, to American eyes, rather unusual processes for refining impure aluminum derived from scraps were found by American and British investigators who went into Germany in 1945 for the Technical Industrial Intelligence Committee Of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. What was found was recorded in a series of reports (see page 14), many of which have been released for general reading. This paper gathers under one title and summarizes the German work in refining light metal scrap. Reference must be made to the original reports for greater detail. Basically, the occasion and stimulus for the German developments in treating light metal scrap were hard necessity. Germany needed the metal for a rapacious war industry. Adequate supplies of new aluminum from reduction works were not assured. Great quantities of airplane and other light metal war scraps were forecast. It was evident that the scrap metal would have to be reabsorbed by the producing industry and would have to be kept of good quality. The normal current production of manufacturing scrap was being and could be consumed as generated. It offered no technical problem. The mixed scraps, especially those arising from crashed and decommissioned airplanes, however, presented problems of another kind. AIRPLANE SCRAP The recovery of usable aluminum alloy from the mixed assemblies that made up the piles of airplane scrap was attacked in different ways by different groups and with differing degrees of success. Three procedures actually were used On a commercial scale, one was in pilot-plant stage and another had come to a halt in the laboratory a year before Germany collapsed. Four of these five processes actually involved "refining"; that is, some measure of purification of the metal after melting. SORTING AND SEPARATION ON A SLOPING HEARTH The simplest procedure for utilizing airplane scrap involved no refining in the strict sense of the word. This was the practice adopted by two representative plants visited by the author, the Leipziger Leichtmetalle Werke, Rackwitz, Saxony, and the Vereinigte Leichtmetalle Werke, Hanover. These firms did essentially the same thing that was done in England but not with equal success, to judge by their shorter experience, the smaller tonnage handled and by the number and quality of alloys produced. The two German firms named rough-sorted scraps by their easily recognizable alloys, essentially by part and shape. They used hand labor to chop and hack and tear apart. "Atikokan is 200 km west of Thunder Bay and earned its mining fame from the discovery of the Steep Rock Iron Range in the late 1930s. Gold, however, was discovered in the Atikokan and Mine Centre areas in the late 1800s and eventually led to one of Ontario's first gold camps, and a total production of approximately 52,000 oz of gold and 174,000 oz of silver from 218,000 tons milled.The general geology of the area consists of Early Precambrian rocks of the Wabigoon and Quetico subprovinces, separated by the east-trending Quetico Fault. The Wabigoon Subprovince, to the north, consists of metavolcanics, minor metasediments and granitic batholiths. The Quetico Subprovince consists of metasediments and granitoids. Small ultramafic plutons occur throughout the metasediments.Within a 50-km radius of Atikokan, more than 50 gold occurrences, prospects and past producers have been discovered since the 18oos. The Atikokan Gold Study performed by the Ontario Geological Sur vey (Wilkinson, 1980, 1982) defined three types of gold mineralization in which gold is concentrated in quartz and quartz-carbonate veins:I) Metavolcanic-Hosted, Stratabound Type-associated with altered felsic fragmental units and chemical sedimentary rocks; possible gold mineralization source rocks. The mineralization is due to metamorphogenic (epigenetic) enrichment. Associated with dynamic metamorphism events and/or felsic intrusive events.2) Marmion Lake Batholith Type-occurs within the gneissic core of the batholith associated with north east-trending lineaments, representing faults or shear zones. Mineralized veins are related to several periods of deformation and shearing, suggesting that metamorphogenic veins were produced during dynamic metamorphism.3) Contact Zone Type -occurs in the contact zone rocks between gneissic batholiths and meta volcanic belts. Hydrothermal solutions produced during several deformational periods acted to leach and concentrate gold mineralization. Localized, discontinuous shear zones host the epigenetic (metamorphogenic) veins.Twenty-one properties in the area were mapped and sampled, and researched petrographically and geochemically. Geological data from the Atikokan Economic Geologist Program of the Ontario Geological Survey are used in discussing the types of mineralization, genetic models, and exploration targets and techiques."

The estimation of particle liberation is important in the study of mineral concentration. With simple systems, where the densities of the components are low, the liberation can be studied directly by density fractionation. For most practical systems, and particularly for the dense, complex sulphides, the only method known is by measurement in polished section. There are two major difficulties with such measurements. Firstly, the measurements themselves are difficult and considerable care is needed before reproducible results can be achieved. Secondly, a well known stereological problem arises which gives the estimates an inherent bias. The paper discusses both aspects of the problem. The practical features of measurement are treated in detail and a method described which has been developed and proven to give reproducible estimates of the liberation in the section. This discussion relates to automated measurements by QEM*SEM and presents a way of estimating the confidence limits within which measurements lie. Comparisons are shown between measurements made by the traditional manual optical technique and automated equipment. Stereological reconstruction is also discussed briefly. Several methods have been presented in the literature but all are complex and none is yet widely accepted. Area measurements are less biased than linear estimates so a practical approach is to use area measurements in uncorrected form. The topic is still being actively researched so it is expected that one method will soon emerge as the standard technique.

If you ask most diamond drillers if they have ever encountered methane gas, the answer would probably be yes. This paper explores a serious methane gas explosion that the author experienced while diamond drilling at a northerly Ontario mine. It is hoped that by documenting this event, people may be alerted to the hidden danger posed by confined methane in underground workings. Methane gas tends to be a problem the deeper you get in any Canadian gold mine. Common procedure when encountering methane is to take readings at the collar of the hole and at different lengths from the source. Monitoring continues until the readings drop below 0.25 ppm. Methane is a tasteless odorless gas that is usually locked up in the seams of the rock or is a product of decaying organic material. Occasionally, the gas is released abruptly over a short period of time. Sometimes the gas can continue to vent for months or even years. In small concentrations, methane is relatively safe. In concentrations under 0.25 ppm methane gas is considered safe to work around. Concentrations over 0.25 ppm can become dangerous. During the summer of 2001, Chris Veldhoen was drilling at a gold mine in Ontario. There were three electric hydraulic diamond drills on the 39 meter level, approximately 5200 feet deep. Two Longyear LM 55 drills were about 40 feet apart and another LM 75 was about 2000 feet away. The two LM 55?s were set up to drill holes no deeper than 350 meters. All three drills had been set up on the same spot for more than a month. None of the three drills had ever encountered methane gas in the entire time they had been drilling on the level. On the day shift of July 13 2001, the driller on Chris? cross shift hit a small pocket of gas. He tested the hole and got a reading above 0.25 ppm. He proceeded to rope off the area with a ?DO NOT ENTER - METHANE GAS? sign and a rope denying access beyond the sign. On Saturday, July 14, Chris was instructed to install a Margo plug in the hole that was emitting methane gas. Methane is usually odorless, but occasionally when encountered underground, is accompanied by a rotten egg smell. As he walked to the drill, he could not smell methane gas. He proceeded to test the hole and got a reading of 0.22 ppm methane. This number was in the acceptable range for drilling, but he plugged the hole anyway.

Operators depend upon the success of backfilling programs to ensure that mine activities run continuously (Archibald et al, 1993) where backfilling is an integral part of the mining cycle. In order to ensure that the backfill is prepared and delivered to the stope possessing the required engineering properties, as designed, and that the backfilling process is safe, mine operators at all stages of the backfilling system must be adequately trained for their tasks and be aware of how their work affects other backfilling stages, both up- and down-stream of their station. Mine operator training is primarily based on learning on-the-job from experienced supervisors or training personnel. Classroom training and the availability of reference manuals are less common. While in use by many industries for some time now, computer-based training (CBT) is becoming more readily accepted by the mining industry for a wide variety of training. It is not intended to replace on-the-job training, but to augment it. CBT offers many advantages to enhance operator learning by utilizing multimedia presentations, interactions and on-line testing to teach complex concepts and relationships. Discussions with many operations revealed that there is an industry need for a backfill guide for frontline operator training and as a reference manual for operators and mine engineers. Sponsored by the mining industry and the CIM, "Mine Backfill, An Operator's Guide" has been developed by the Departments of Mining Engineering at Queen's University and McGill University to fulfil this need. "Mine Backfill, An Operator's Guide" is an interactive multimedia package that incorporates high quality colour images, animations, sound, and video with text to review the main backfill methods employed in Canada, including hydraulic/slurry, paste and rock fill. The Guide is divided into training and reference primer sections. When in training mode, the operator is guided through a presentation of common mining and backfill practices and technologies so that he/she may become more familiar with different aspects of backfill processes. To ensure that key concepts have been learned during training, the operator will be tested after each section using a series of multiple choice and true/false questions. When in reference mode, alternatively, the operator may browse through the information in a more detailed and independent fashion through a series of interactive menus. The Guide focuses on the following main topics: resources, surface preparation, distribution, stope activities, health and safety, and quality control. Special features included in the Operator's Guide are a Buyer's Guide, a Trouble Shooting Guide, and an interactive glossary of backfill and mining terms. Concepts in interactive and computer-based learning are also reviewed in this paper.

The authors have accumulated published data on residual soil and rock tunnels in the United States and have compared it to transit tunneling experience in Atlanta, Georgia, and tunnels in other soil and rock conditions. Two 6.1 meter (20 foot) diameter shield driven, compressed air tunnels were constructed for the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) connecting the Five Points Station (central hub) with the Peachtree Center Station (first station on the north line). Because of the historic multi-story structures above the tunnels and the variety of subsurface conditions, a comprehensive ground monitoring and observation program was conducted. Conclusions are drawn regarding residual soil and rock ground response due to tunneling. Comparisons are made to ground response due to tunneling in other soil and rock conditions.

The charts are used to demonstrate the theory on a hypothetical mine.INTRODUCTIONRecently a series of articles have dealt with leakage in a mine ventilation system and the problem of its reduction.Theories were developed by Peascod and Keane (1955) for the combined effect of flow in the airways and leakage through the porous barrier between the intake and return of an ideal mine. Later Keane and Peascoa. (1956) extended these ideas to the use of an underground booster fan in increasing the face ventilation and showed how to determine the water gauge and location of the most efficient underground fan.These articles were based on the assumption that Atkin:son's formula:P = R Q2 (1)gave the relation between the pressure drop P lb'/sq. ft., the quantity, Q kilocusecs, flowing in the mine airways and the total resistance, R Atkinsons, to air flow offered by the mine roadway. An Atkinson is defined as a resistance such that 1 kilocusec of air flows due to a pressure drop of 1Ib.jsq. ft. However for conditions prevailing in most mines a more :appropriate relation is that postulated by Reynolds and others (Lamb, 1953) :P=R Qn (2)where n has some value slightly less than 2. It should be noted that Atkinsons may not be used as units when n is not equal to 2.

In a large surface mine design, different kinds of mining equipment can be selected. Even though the major purpose of capital investment is to get more profit from mining activities, there are some other complicated factors which influence the selection of mining equipment must be considered as well. A fuzzy evaluation model with fuzzy set theory is proposed in the paper to make a good selection of mining equipment in which different kinds of factors including quantitative and nonquantitative ones can be taken into account at the same time. With the model, mining equipment selection of a large surface mine can take into consideration not only economic factors but also some other factors which play important role in mining system.

Melnikov has projected that blasting methods would be used to crush 20% of soft rocks and 80435% of medium and hard rocks. Thus, the volume of blasting will continue to increase.This is especially true for electrical blasting, since this method has a number of well known advantages, and in some cases (e.g. for underground blasting in coal mines) it is the only acceptable method."

A petrographic study was made of the type and sources of mineral contamination occurring in Florida phosphate rock products. Emphasis was placed on contaminants in the screened rock (+1 mm), since this portion of the product undergoes no physical beneficiation except for scrubbing to remove slimes. Since iron and aluminum contents of the finished product affect the salability, special emphasis was placed on identifying types and sources of these contaminants and relating chemical composition to visual characteristics. Wavellite derived from the overburden was the major aluminum contaminant with some aluminum being included as secondary clay balls. Iron occurred as phosphates in the overburden and as colloidal oxides included in the phosphate pebbles. Chert and limestone contamination derived from the Hawthorne formation underlying the phosphate matrix.

Project feasibility no longer involves just technical and economic viability-today's feasibility study must include environmental, regulatory, and political considerations as well. While the US now appears at least somewhat committed to developing synthetic fuels, including oil shale, it is the environmental issues, rules, regulations, and guidelines that will play the major role in determining the timing, magnitude, and overall scope of synfuel development in the coming years. The key environmental obstacle affecting oil shale development is uncertainty. Although oil shale may be the most environmentally studied "new" technology in the world, little is known with much degree of certainty about potential environmental consequences of one full-scale commercial facility, or the effects of a massive development effort in a relatively pristine and sparsely populated area. Other primary environmental uncertainties include: • Environmental compliance costs and their effects on investment decisions; • The reliability and acceptability of anticipated pollution control technologies; and • The confusing, time-consuming environmental regulatory framework, which requires more than 100 permits, clearances, and reviews before development occurs. This discussion will focus on the latter uncertainty, and will describe he current status of potential constraints to oil shale industry development in five areas: water availability; water quality degradation; air quality degradation; reclamation and spent shale disposal; and community impacts.

Prediction of rock cuttability by various excavation machines such as tunnel boring machines, road headers, rippers, picks, roller disc cutters, excavators, etc is of major concern to both civil and mining engineers and rock mechanics. In principle, the design of a rock cutting tool is based on achieving maximum excavation with minimum input energy, minimum applied force, minimum equipment weight and volume and, more importantly, minimum tool wear. When a rock material is indented by the force of a cutting tool and then unloaded several material zones form underneath and around the tool. As the tool moves into the rock the volume of its associated rock cavity (ie volume of displaced rock) expands and depending on the indenter's shape various phenomena may occur. Immediately beneath the tool a small zone in which the stress state is more or less hydrostatic, is formed which is underlain by an inelastic, or damaged, material zone. Both size and shape of this damaged zone control the magnitude of the indentation force and the chip formation mechanism during unloading. The rock is unable to store the whole strain energy induced by the tool and consequently the extra energy is expended either in forming new fracture surfaces and/or in plastic deformation in the damaged zone. Therefore, it is not surprising to see that both perfect-elastic and rigid-plastic constitutive models are not generally suitable for modelling indentation of rocks. In contrast elastoplastic constitutive models are more appropriate as they can include both elastic and plastic deformations (Kral et al, 1993). Elastic solutions for several half-space indentation problems can be found in most text books on elasticity and in particular in Timoshenko and Goodier (1951), Sneddon, (1951), Poulos and Davis (1974) and Johnson (1985a). If a failure criterion, eg the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion, is applied to delimit elastic solutions for indentation problems, a lower bound limit of the applied indentation force (for a given indentation depth) can be estimated. It may be noted that elastic analyses, without any delimiting failure criteria, normally overestimate the indentation force. Plastic solutions for a few indentation problems may be found in Hill (1950), Johnson, (1985a) and Alehossein et al (1992). When analysing the behaviour of indented rocks the choice of an appropriate constitutive model describing effectively the behaviour of the rock at various stages and phases during indentation is a challenging issue. Several questions need to be answered before starting an effective analysis. The first question is of course: Which one of these is more appropriate for modelling zones underneath and around a cutter, elasticity or plasticity theory, continuum damage mechanics or fracture mechanics, and what is the bridging link between these various theories? Which mode is more dominant in fracturing rock, tensile or shear mode? What governs the mechanism of chip formation? What is the function, shape and the behaviour of the pulverised zone that forms just underneath a cutter? Is the hydrostatic stress state assumption reasonable for this zone? How does the rock change during the absorption and dissipation of the input energy and how does the indentation energy vary with rock type and depth of penetration? How can we model the damaged zone under the indenter? Furthermore does a plastic material form beneath the pulverised zone? When and how do radial and ring cracks form around and under an indenter?

Introduction The history of mining machine development has been and is one of "bigger is better." While this may not always be true, it is currently the only approach open to machine designers without specific in situ cutting force information. The US Bureau of Mines has tried to modify this approach by supporting research, both in the laboratory and in field tests, that demonstrates that bigger is only better if the equipment is used correctly. In-house research has shown conclusively that deeper cutting reduces both dust and energy (Roepke, Lindroth, and Myren, 1976). This approach has been applied to a large Lee-Norse (LN456) continuous mining machine, which confirmed that slow deep cutting is beneficial and does not have a negative effect on production (Black and Rounds, 1977; Black et al., 1978). Specific in situ engineering data needed on coal cutting forces have not, however, been obtained by field tests with the LN456. Although the machine was instrumented to obtain data on one seam, it would be impractical to move the machine from mine to mine. It became apparent that a portable, easy to use device was needed for obtaining coal cutting forces in situ. Such a device could provide the engineering data needed by manufacturers, the site-specific cutting information needed by operators, and a field research tool to establish correlation with laboratory cutting tests. Design and Development According to a set of design guidelines established by the Bureau, the proposed device should be able to measure cutting forces directly with standard coal cutting bits, be transportable by two miners, and be self-contained. These guidelines were given to Ingersoll-Rand Research Inc. (IRRI). The contractor performed a rigorous review of 16 existing in situ portable tester designs, none of which could use a standard coal cutting bit to measure cutting force directly. These included a wide range of devices, all of which are discussed in the final report (Banerjee and Wisner, 1982). A series of design tradeoffs were established to satisfy initial design guidelines. The final deci¬sion was heavily weighted by an industry survey to determine the preferred concept from four man¬ufacturers and four operators. To assure ease of use with maximum information, all respondents wanted a linear cutting device that could work in seams down to 1 m (40 in.). The final design choice was between a linear and a rotary tester. The rotary tester would cut on an arc in the same manner as a rotary drum machine. It had several faults, however, that could not be resolved within the scope of this contract. The worst was related to arc cutting (Roepke, Lindroth, and Myren, 1976). Since any bit cutting on arc enters the coal at zero depth, goes to maximum depth only at the horizontal centerline, and exits at zero, maximum cutting force is obtained only at the instant the bit crosses the horizontal centerline. This centerline peak response would require that many replications be made with an arc-type cutter to get reliable force information. The arc-type tester would require extensive face preparation to establish the cutting path and extensive wasted clearing cuts to advance the device for additional layers of cuts. The linear tester could be mounted directly on any face or rib with only minor preparation. By its nature, a linear cut at a constant depth provides multiple peak force data over the length of the cut, thus reducing the required number of replications. Introduction Temperature gradients have been determined for numerous locations in the Canadian Shield in connection with mining operations (1, 2, 12, 13, 14, 15). As part of a programme of geophysical studies of this region, some of these gradients were re-determined by the writer at locations where other thermal properties, specific heat, thermal conductivity, radioactivity, etc., were also to be measured. The ultimate object was to determine the heat flow to the surface at these locations. It was felt that the practice of determining heat flow from the temperatures and conductivities obtained in a single vertical bore hole (3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9) might give results which were appreciably divergent from the average for a considerable area. Particularly, it was thought that temperature gradients, whether obtained in a single vertical hole or from a number of random locations at various depths in a mine, might be subject to local variations and anomalies serious enough to render unsure any discussions based on them. The procedure followed in this investigation was to select a location where mine workings extended to considerable depth over a reasonably wide area. At selected depths below surface, horizontal drill holes extending into regions of undisturbed rock were located and resistance thermometers were inserted into these holes far enough to record the true rock temperature. An attempt was made to obtain a sufficient number of readings at or near any one level to give a representative coverage of the area selected. This ideal could not always be attained, but the large number of readings obtained for each are a does give a reasonably representative picture of the temperature conditions. These readings required much rime and movement of men and equipment underground . They could not have been obtained without the wholehearted co-operation of the management and considerable assistance from the personnel of the mines concerned.

The action of water on a number of Queensland shales which are associated with particular coal measures and oil shales has been studied. The results suggest that the disintegration of some of the shales could cause significant problems in mining and preparation operations. The extent of shale breakdown varies widely from deposit to deposit and from seam to seam but a suitable assessment procedure utilises the test described in AS 1661-1979, and an improved method of presenting the results is described in the paper.

The design of foundations for the tall buildings of lower Manhattan rely on the use of high capacity, rock anchors to resist overturning forces generated by lateral loads from wind, earth, water and, to a lesser degree, seismic forces. Once completed, the proposed towers at the World Trade Center (WTC) site will be among the tallest buildings in New York City. The towers are exposed to coastal winds and from several levels of below grade structure soil and water loads. The design loading required under the current New York City Building Code (NYCBC) is similar to the requirements of the building code used to design the original WTC Twin Towers. We will compare how rock anchors were deployed in the Twin Towers and how they are used in the new buildings. Changes to the building code are less significant that the changes to the design of the structure; that is how the outer skin or perimeter structure interacts with the building core. The result is a significant increase in the number of rock anchors required for the new buildings when compared to those installed in the original WTC Twin Towers.

Groundwater issues for the mining industry are many and varied. When the depth of mining is below the water table/potentiometric surface, a groundwater æsinkÆ is created which alters the local groundwater flow regime resulting in minewater inflows. Assessment of mine dewatering, mine water balance and wastewater disposal requirements are central to the effective management of water in a mining operation. Each of these issues has a significant groundwater component. Other groundwater issues for mining operations include: water supply, aquifer storage and recovery, the impact on other groundwater users in respect of groundwater levels, bore yields and water quality, and the development of an effective groundwater monitoring network for early detection of impacts and to satisfy regulatory requirements. This paper outlines the techniques involved in assessing groundwater issues for project feasibility, during operation and post closure, and provides an overview of several mine dewatering and water disposal methods. The practical assessment of groundwater issues for the mining industry is illustrated with several case studies of mining projects in Australia, SE Asia and the subcontinent. These are projects to which the author has contributed during a career as a geologist/hydrogeologist spanning more than 25 years.
