The prime objective of geophysical exploration is to promote the economical and rapid dis-covery of mineral or oil deposits of commercial value. To a few this concept as applied in min-ing may signify the direct discovery of ore-bodies, but to the geophysical engineer this latter Idea is one of the most insidious and detrimental misapprehensions which he has to combat. The destruction of this annoying obstacle to the progress of geophysical exploration reveals the kernel of truth behind it, that the exploration geophysicist has for the better part of two decades been concerned primarily with the discovery of mineral formations favorable to the occur-rence of commercial ore. There is a very real distinction here, since geophysical methods are capable of discovering certain mineral formations such as sulphide bodies or quartz veins, but are totally incompetent to predict whether or not they constitute ore; that is. whether or not they contain minerals of economic value in the amounts requisite to repay extraction. The art of geophysical exploration is now, however, rapidly outgrowing these early limita-tions. The rate of this growth will in large measure depend on the recognition by the mining industry of the fact that geophysics can play a role far wider and more important than it usual-ly does now, in guiding the future exploration and development of mineral deposits. It is my own firm conviction that as time marches on we will see the methods of applied geophysics turned more and more to the delineation of both minor and major structural features. The outlining of such features having a bearing on the probable loci of mineral deposition will be of inestimable value in guiding the development of a mining district. "Much effort has been made to reduce the energy requirement in zinc electrowinning. In order to keep energy consumption low, either to make cell voltage low or current .efficiency high is necessary. Decrease of cell voltage practically depends on how to reduce ohmic resistance in the electrolyte and the anode crust. To realize these, new concept was proposed and the pilot plant has been operated. The space between a cathode and an anode is halved by utilizing the frame insulator. With these frames the anodes and cathodes compose of a unit of electrodes, and this unit is handled by newly designed electrode handling machine (E.H.M.). The process includes lifting up electrodes, expanding the space between a cathode and an anode, cleaning them, stripping the deposited zinc and returning the unit to the cell. As a result, cell voltage is kept as low as calculated and predictable energy reduction has been achieved. IntroductionIn the recent trend of a rapid appreciation of the Japanese yen, Akita Zinc Refinery of Mitsubishi Metal Corporation has been confronted by problems of relatively high operating costs. In order to compete with other overseas zinc refineries, it is necessary to reduce the cost of zinc production, especially the cost of electric power which now accounts for .up to 35 % of the entire cost of production. Three fourth of the electric power used at Akita Zinc Refinery is for the electrolysis. Therefore it is extremely important to reduce the cost of electrolysis.There are two possible measures for solving the problem; one is to use more nighttime electricity taking the advantage of its inexpensive power price, and the other is to reduce electric power consumption.As a part of a rationalization plan carried out in 1986, Akita Zinc Refinery increased the number of operating cells. As a result, when nighttime electricity is used, the silicone rectifier has been able to operate at full capacity. Moreover, by new schemes of ""increase of area for electrodeposition by ralslng the liquid level of electrolyte"" and ""increase of the number of electrodes in each cell"", current density could be lowered and as a result, the electric power consumption has been improved. In order to raise nighttime ratio even higher, installation of an additional rectifier and cells would be required."

"This paper introduces a new approach for the design of rib pillars. The approach involves an empirical method for pillar design and a discussion of the pillar stability used for open stope mining methods.The empirical method predicts the degree of stability of rib pillars. Pillar load is estimated using two and three dimensional numerical modelling. Rock strength and the shape effect of pillars are used to account for pillar strength. The method has been calibrated with case histories from Canadian open stope metal mines and is compared with other methods used [or pillar design.INTRODUCTIONThe role of rib pillars in open stope mining is to provide stability to a mining block by limiting rock mass displacements and restricting the exposure of a rock mass in stope backs and stope walls. They also provide flexibility in ore extraction by dividing a stope block into multiple working faces.The use of backfill in open stope mining methods has reduced somewhat the need for optimum pillar design. In contrast to permanent pillar methods, the dimensions do not need to be minimized because the pillars are usually recovered in a later stage of mining. However, the consequences of poor pillar design are often overlooked and can still be severe. A pillar that does not perform its intended role may result in excessive stope or pillar sloughing, difficult and expensive pillar recovery, loss of permanent access and remedial costs such as development rehabilitation, artificial support or low productivity.Pillar design concepts of the past were not developed for open stope mining conditions and generally have not been confirmed for open stoping. The focus of this paper is to introduce an empirical design relationship specifically for open stope pillars. It provides a stable, yielding or failed pillar assessment for a given design."

The high temperature lubricant molybdenite, MoS2, is usually produced by a complex sequence of processes involving mineral dressing of molybdenite concentrates followed by leaching with hydrofluoric acid to remove abrasive impurities such as silica (1). Many attempts have been made, mostly by techniques involving, direct fusion of molybdenum compounds with sulphur, to produce synthetic molybdenite. However, apart from some experiments of geochemical interest (2) in which aqueous solutions of sodium sulphomolybdate, Nat MoS4, were decomposed under pressure at temperatures between 300°C and 700°C, no attempts to produce the mineral by hydrometallurgical procedures have been reported. Since molybdenite is nominally a compound of tetravalent molybdenum with sulphur, and the most common state of molybdenum is +6, production of molybdenite is likely to involve reduction and sulphidization. The present study, therefore, describes the reduction, with hydrogen and carbon monoxide, of molybdenum in the hexavalent state in alkaline aqueous solutions containing sulphide ion. In these

WHEN attempting to lift mill pulp containing a considerable percentage of wolframite, in an ordinary bucket elevator, difficulty was encountered from the tendency of the tungsten minerals to settle, on account of their high specific gravity. Lifts not exceeding 20 ft. (6m.) could be accomplished without particular difficulty, because there was insufficient time for consolidation of the heavy minerals in the bottom of the bucket; but with higher lifts, the heavy tungsten minerals would settle so solidly that when the bucket turned over at the top of the elevator the contents could be only partially dumped. In this case it ,was necessary to lift the material a distance of 34 ft. (10m.); hence some means had to be adopted to prevent settling, at least to such an extent that the material could be dumped from the buckets. To reduce the carrying time to a sufficient extent would have required a belt speed of 475 ft. (144.7m.) per minute, which was not feasible. It was decided to try, by vibrating the belt about midway of its span, to keel) the material sufficiently agitated during elevation to prevent settling. Underneath the rising side of the belt was placed a 12-in. (30.48-cm.) idler pulley, 18 ft.-(5.5 in.) up in the total lift of 34 ft. The idler pulley was set eccentric by 3/4 in. (19 mm.) and it was hoped that the vibration thus imparted to the belt, running at a speed of 280 ft. (85 m.) per minute, would prevent settling in the buckets. It was found that the pressure of the belt on the idler, due to the small inclination of the elevator, was not sufficient to overcome sliding on the idler, and the agitation was insufficient to accomplish the desired purpose. The idler was then connected to the drive shaft of the elevator through an intermediate pulley, gearing down to a speed of 20 r.p.m., so that a positive vibration was imparted to the belt; this imparted enough motion to the belt to prevent settling and the contents of buckets clumped satisfactorily.

THE purpose of pulverizing coal before burning it is to make available every heat unit it contains. Machinery has been developed which will pulverize coal in one operation, delivering it to bins in front of the furnaces at an expenditure of about 17 hp.-hr. per ton, in a medium-sized plant. The cost of the operation depends upon the amount of moisture that must be expelled before pulverizing, the cost of labor, and the cost of coal delivered at the plant. At a small plant, requiring a pulverizer with a capacity of only ½ ton per hour, the cost per ton pulverized will naturally be greater than at a plant requiring the largest pulverizer, with a capacity of 7 tons per hour. The first step is to reduce large lumps to a size suitable for drying uniformly, before passing to the pulverizing mills; this is done in rolls, at a single pass. The second -step is the elimination of moisture, in order to facilitate pulverizing to great fineness, while also increasing the heating effect and the temperature attainable when the coal is burned. There are other mechanical advantages in the handling of, dried coal. Driers are now manufactured which are able to eliminate moisture without distilling any of the volatile combustible matter in the coal; they are fired by hand or with pulverized fuel. The heat first surrounds the shell of the drier, being confined within a chamber where complete combustion takes place; the heated gases are then led through a duct to the discharge end of the drier and enter the inside of the shell at a temperature not exceeding 300° F. This temperature is maintained by the operator and is indicated by a pyrometer. Volatile combustible matter is not likely to be distilled until the temperature rises above 400° F. On discharging from the drier, the coal is usually passed over a magnetic separator in order to prevent pieces of iron from going to the pulverizer. Two types are used: a magnetic pulley which automatically discharges its collection of iron, and a lifting type, from which the iron is removed by hand when convenient.

When coal is deposited on the decks of pneumatic tables, all fine particles clinging to the larger pieces are blown free by the air. Inasmuch as the air retains an appreciable residual velocity after passing through the bed of coal, it is capable of suspending particles of goodly size. This velocity is dissipated gradually and, unless confined, can readily extend beyond the limits of the plant. Today the ideal in the design and operation of pneumatic cleaning plants is not that they be no dustier than the ordinary tipple, but rather that they be as clean as an office or shop. This degree of perfection may not yet have been attained in any commercial plant, but it is not impossible of achievement. Not until recently has the recirculation principle been applied to pneumatic separating plants. In the writer's estimation, it has not yet been proved entirely satisfactory in commercial installations. A serious obstacle lies in the fact that it is practically impossible to provide a truly closed circuit. The air circuits must be interrupted at certain points, if only for the introduction of raw material and for the recovery of the finished product. It is feasible to prevent the escape of polluted air at these points, but this can scarcely be accomplished without admitting additional air into the circuit. These additions of air are cumulative, which necessitates means for emitting to the atmosphere the excess while still carrying its objectionable burden, if provisions are not made for conditioning. If it must be provided at all, conditioning is frequently simpler and more economical if applied to the entire volume of air involved. This procedure eliminates the extra initial cost and operating expense of the closed system. Crane Cheek Experiments The first noteworthy commercial installation of pneumatic equipment was made in 1922, at the Crane Creek plant of the American Coal Co. of Allegheny County, at McComas, W. Va. Six tables for cleaning coal between the limits of and 3 in. comprised the initial installation. Dust was collected by hoods connected by a system of ducts to exhauster fans. In this installation the unit dust burden was small, owing to the removal of fines from the feed by vibrating screens.

"The leaching process is the first step when recycling BF slag as raw material for some other products. While studying the kinetics of the BF slag leaching process, a fractal phenomenon was found, which indicated some interesting mechanism in the process. The result suggested a new understanding of the leaching process in detail which useful for the industrial applicationIntroductionTypical composition (wt. %) of blast furnace slag varied in a pretty wide range: SiO2 30–40, Al2O3 10–20, CaO 30–40, MgO 5–10.The ground granulated slag is commonly used as base of roadway (mixed with natural inert for paving, soil stabilization, etc.) or one of the resources of Portland cements because of its good hydraulic activity [1]. To recycle the slag economically, the selective recovery of some components of the slag may be considered. As main components exist in the slag, silica [2, 3 and 4] and alumina [4] recovery was first considered.While recovering of silica from the slag, silica gels are recovered selectively from the leaching solution deriving from the treatment of the slag with waste sulfuric acid. After separation of the exhausted solid of leaching, the silica gel is precipitated from the solution at pH 3.2. Although the silica gels obtained by this procedure contain many impurities and need some more work afterward, it is the first and important step for the process.In the prior work [5], silica extraction using blast furnace slag had been investigated, focused on the pH value of selectively silica extraction. In the present work, kinetics of the leaching process was focused. It is important to design an economical process.ExperimentalThe composition of the slag and the calcined gels has been determined by a LINK860 (Oxford Instruments, Oak Ridge, TN) energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) in conjunction with a CAMBRIDGE S250-M2 (Cambridge Instrument Ltd., Cambridge, U.K.) scanning electron microscope(SEM). PLAIN mining engineers usually avoid any gathering of geo¬physicists because of the incomprehensibility of their discussion to the uninitiated. This being so, gradients, gravity and gammas will be deferred to the end of this review, the first part of which will be devoted to what has been done in applying geophysics to the solution of real field problems. From the West, J. J. Jakosky reports that International Geophysics has had its activities fairly well 'divided between mining (both placer and lode), oil structural work, and clans-site and reservoir investigations. In oil exploration, electrical methods are used for depths down to 2500 ft., beyond which they utilize seismic methods. They find in their placer work that the many 'magnetic anomalies encountered in the bedrock of the Southwest render the electrical techniques more satisfactory, and with them they are obtaining thickness and tonnage of gravels, depth to and contour of the underlying bedrock as well as important structural features therein, and water-table elevations.

A Reconnaissance of the manganese- and chrome-ore deposits of Cuba was made by the writer, as a representative of the U. S. Geological Survey, in company with Mr. Albert Burch of the Bureau of Mines, under instructions of the Secretary of the Interior, in the spring of 1918. The Cuban Government courteously detailed Sr. E. I. Montoulieu, a mining engineer connected with the Treasury Department, to act as escort and associate throughout the work on the island. The object of the study was to obtain authentic information for use of the United States Government as to the location, character, quantity, and availability of the manganese- and chrome-ore deposits in Cuba. Accordingly, the work comprised examination of such deposits as seemed to be of promise, without regard to stage of development, with a view to a determination of the quantity and quality of ore likely to become available for shipment during 1918 and 1919, and of the tonnage of ore in reserve. Wile it was possible to visit most of the deposits that seemed to be of promise, there was not sufficient time to visit all that were brought to our attention, some of which may have merit. Moreover, the necessity for paying particular attention to the ore deposits and the mines precluded the possibility of making more general studies of the geology of the region, and of making satisfactory collections of country rock and of fossils, and so for other details as to the geography and geology of Cuba the reader is referred to the report by Hayes, Vaughan, and Spencer.l Mr. Burch returned to the United States about 10 days in advance of the writer, who continued, in company with Sr. Montoulieu, investigations of reported deposits in Pinar del Rio, Matanzas, and Santa Clara Provinces. In China all minerals are, theoretically at least, the property of the Emperor, and the Imperial permission must be got from him for the privilege of working them. A direct tax is levied on this privilege, and by simple command, the Emperor can close a mine at any time. Occult geomantic influences are a large factor in determining the opening or the arbitrary closing of a mine. The location with reference to points of the compass, graves and natural objects, may be really or professedly considered as indicating that those influences are favorable or unfavorable. The consequence, is, of course, that for the authorization and encouragement of any considerable enterprise, friends' at court, practical politics, and more or less bribery, are required. As a result, most Chinese mining is illicit, and is carried on in a small way only. Often along a single vein, or over a small section of mining country, a few individuals obtain rights over all the openings, most probably by loaning money to the head-men of the operators and holding the mines as security for the debt. In such cases, perhaps, for better security, all the ore is reduced in the works established by the creditors, who also handle all silver produced..As the head-men are, for the most part, improvident, and the laws and customs for the collection of' debts are stringent and peculiar, the " officemen" or creditors acquire in time what is practically an ownership of

The in situ performance of Cemented Paste Backfill (CPB) systems can be monitored to improve understanding of the paste?s behaviour and therefore optimize the geomechanical design of the cemented paste backfill system (i.e., minimize binder content, minimize fill barricade complexity, maximize fill rate-of-rise during backfilling, and minimize cure time before resuming production blasting in proximity). However, undertaking such a monitoring program is inherently complex, because the rate-of-rise and accompanying self-weight induced stresses occur at a time rate that is similar to the rate of hydration and associated increase in the paste?s stiffness and strength. In addition, arching within the stope complicates the overall stress distribution. Therefore, to obtain a complete picture of the CPB?s response, it is necessary to measure several variables (3-D total pressures, water pressures and suctions, hydration rates, and blasting induced vibrations) at a given ?point?, and take all such measurements at many points throughout the fill mass as well as at barricade locations. The overall testing program can therefore be logistically difficult to implement and have an apparent high cost. However, if the program is successful, the benefits arising from improved mine design can significantly outweigh the seemingly high initial capital and labour costs of the monitoring program. A case study involving an instrumented paste fill in a tall and narrow Alimak stope is briefly outlined. Plans for a similar experiment in a large long-hole stope are then considered.

The sudden failure of bodies of rock is a serious problem commonly experienced in the international mining industry. These explosive releases of energy are referred-to as ?bumps?, ?outbursts? and ?rockbursts?. Rockbursts can occur at such a rapid speed that they present a direct threat to safety in large parts of the mine workings. The build-up of excess stress within the body of rock can be attributed to different causes. In shallow workings, for example, sudden and violent failure of the roof strata can be caused by leaving insufficient pillar width when practising room-and-pillar mining. At much greater working depths, as it is the case in the German coal industry, rockbursts are generally attributable to high levels of rock pressure. This can even result in coal outbursts when driving individual roadways. More than thirty years ago the German coal industry suffered from numerous rockburst incidents which caused many deaths and serious injuries. This led directly to the establishment of the Rockburst Prevention Centre, which was created at the instigation of the mining companies and the chief mines inspectorate. The consistent logging and analysis of all rockburst incidents has led to the development of a system that is still used as a basis for preventing underground rockbursts and minimising the risk of such phenomena occurring. Working closely with the mining authorities and mining companies the accredited experts of the Rockburst Prevention Centre have played a key role in helping to develop and implement a range of methods for the early detection and prevention of rockbursts.

THEN sufficient ore has been blocked out on a lease to warrant a shaft, the proposed. Location of the shaft should be carefully considered, as the old promoter's method of sinking wherever his hat landed is a sad mistake as some: of us have learned by trying to operate such mines. In some instances certain conditions exist, such as mill location, railroad right of way, etc., that necessitate a change of location from the. ideal, but under average conditions and with the knowledge of the formation gained from the drill logs and with the general trend of the orebody known, the shaft can be located from. the standpoint of its future relation to the mine with re-gard to hauling and' hoisting a maximum tonnage: at a minimum cost per ton, also taking into account the minimum amount of expense and trouble- in sinking. Quite a few shafts are located in the wall of a run or just in the thin edge of the orebody: As a general rule the formation here is solid and permits rapid and safe sinking, and the shaft pillars are left in practically valueless material. This permits the withdrawal of pillars and still keeps the shaft protected. By opening a shaft in thin ground, you are not tempted to cut it high, wide, and handsome, but to shape it up-with ample clearance for lay-bys and with more of an idea of permanency, as a few hundred extra dollars spent around the shafts for proper track installation will re-turn, a good rate of interest in ease of handling "cans," quick get-away; and fewer wrecks. Nearly all the shafts in this district are sunk on a contract basis, the con-tractors furnishing all labor and explosives, and the company building the sinking-derrick, dump-track, and furnishing, all equipment, material, and power. The following costs are the averages, for three shafts sunk through good solid formation, with no water to, contend with, and approximately 260 -ft., deep, having about-100 ft. of shale. The contract price was $9 per foot with the shale and $13 per foot in the solid, making a total of $2,980 paid to the contractor. The wages paid by the contractor were, $5 per shift for the hoist-man, who also sharpened steel, $6 for the lead shaft man, and $5 for the helper;, the cribbing was sawed on contract for 40c. per shaft: foot; about. 94 board feet. of cribbing was used per foot of staggered cribbing and 168 board feet per foot of solid cribbing.

THE system molten copper-oxygen-sulphur is of interest from both the practical and theoretical standpoints; practically, because oxygen and sulphur play an important role in the commercial production of copper, and theoretically because it offers a chance to study the reaction between an oxide gas, SO2, and a molten metal. Reactions of this type, such as that between CO or CO2 and molten iron, are important in many metallurgical operations. Again, the determination of any gas-metal equilibrium is of theoretical interest and value insofar as it contributes to the general development of the laws for solution of gases in metals. This problem is being given an increasing amount of attention in modern metallurgy. This paper is the first of a series and presents the results of a determination of the solubility of sulphur dioxide in molten copper at temperatures from 1100° to 1500°C., and pressures from about 20 mm. of mercury to somewhat above atmospheric. REVIEW OF PREVIOUS WORK The solubility of gases in most liquids has been found to obey Henry's law, which states that for a fixed temperature the amount of gas dissolved is directly proportional to the pressure. However this law does not hold for liquid metals. Instead, it appears that for many gases, particularly the simple diatomic ones such as 02, N2 and H2, the amount dissolved in liquid metals is directly proportional to the square root of the pressure. This is known as Sieverts' law. It may be recognized as a special case of Henry's law, which applies when the solute gas is dissociated into atoms or when it reacts with the solvent metal to form solute molecules containing single atoms of the gaseous elements, as, for example: [(MG) l 2M +G2 = 2MG K = Ma X Pa, [I]] which, if the solubility is not too high and the concentration of metal therefore nearly constant, can be simplified to: [MG = Kl Pa,[2]] Following the same reasoning, it would be expected that the solubility of SO2 in copper would be proportional to the cube root of the pressure, the reaction being as follows: [6Cu + SO2 = Cu2S + 2Cu20[3] K _ Cu2S X (Cu20)2 (Cu)6(Pso2)[4]] or, neglecting the change in metal concentration and considering that the concentrations of sulphur and oxygen are both proportional to the volume V of gas absorbed: [8 =KI = Pte, or VSO2= K2 '~/PeO, [S]]

Effective and profitable mining begins with good blasting results. While the importance of sufficient energy to break the rock is recognized, more attention should be paid to the time factor in blasting. Fragmentation, looseness and the shape of the muckpile can be improved and energy levels lowered through the use of proper delays. The long delay is also the most important parameter in establishing stable walls along the final limits of the pit. The time factor in blasting is explained through the rock acceleration process and its practical application is demonstrated by case histories.

The impact of computers on the mining industry has increased for the past twenty years in most parts of the world. The application of computers in the mining industry has been demonstrated in areas such as geological data analysis, ore reserve estimation, mine planning, and manpower training. There is also a general concern in this country regarding the computing background of graduating mining engineers from the Australian higher institutions of learning. This paper describes specific steps which have been taken at the Department of Civil and Mining Engineering, The University of Wollongong to provide adequate computing background to mining engineering graduates. Specific topics discussed include hardware and software available to students and how "computers" have been integrated into the mining engineering course.

An overview is given of the present state of traditional and new steelmaking equipment and techniques, and one of the direct steelmaking methods that are currently being developed is described. In steelmaking processes, coal is used to supplement the energy input and to reduce iron oxides in the slag. Foamy slag practice is discussed, and the most widely used types of ladle recarburizers, their properties, and manufacture are described. It is concluded that the use of carbon sources, mainly for supplementing energy and as reductants, will increase in the future, but that demands on the purity of the materials will probably become more stringent. If hydrogen were manufactured at a competitive cost, it could become an alternative fuel and reductant in the field of iron and steelmaking.
