The mineral processing community have been amongst the pioneer developers and early adopters of key platform technologies in analytical methods, chemistry, physical separation and advanced modelling. Fundamental research will continue to have a significant impact driven by the continued development of sustainable practices. Major drivers and challenges for change in our industry in the next two decades include: reduction in energy uses in processing; discovery of new energy materials; adoption of green chemistry routes; safeguarding of water resources; and demonstration of adherence to best practice at all times. With increasingly global mining enterprises, the provision of internationally accepted benchmarks for performance will continue to drive the creative process. This lecture highlights major opportunities around a new paradigm of Multi-scale Measurement coupled with Multi-scale Modelling, based on advanced sensors, communications and computing. Connecting real-time measurement sensors with dynamic simulation models opens up new horizons for visualising the process behaviour from an experimental and theoretical basis. Examples are given of the potential of this methodology and its implications for better design.

Many jet grouted columns were recently installed to create a jet grout-treated soil foundation for an earthen embankment used in a large shoreline stabilization project in the Mystic River in Charlestown, MA. A physical test program was used to determine whether the jet grouting parameters the Contractor selected would meet the design requirements given the local soil variability, including soft river sediments and organic soils. The presence of hydrocarbons encountered in the marine sediments during the test program caused concern that the design strength could not be achieved. The published literature discusses the environmental aspects of jet grouting with hydrocarbons. The literature did not include many studies of the effect on jet grout-treated soil strength for the types and concentration of hydrocarbons encountered on this project. The grout mix, air pressure, and number of passes of jet grouting were varied in a second field test program to determine jet grouting parameters needed to achieve the design strength of columns with hydrocarbons. A geo-probe study was performed to identify the type and concentration of hydrocarbons on the site. With few exceptions, the quality control core samples from the production columns met the design requirements with many strength values far exceeding the design strength. This paper presents the data, and reviews the lessons learned. PROJECT BACKGROUND The Charlestown Bus Garage, located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, is a Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) bus maintenance facility located on the Mystic River. The site was home to a coal gasification facility before it was developed by the MBTA as a bus garage in 1978. A deadman-anchored steel sheet pile bulkhead wall installed along the Mystic river on the east side of the site supports the site grade at about El. 11 ft (NAVD 1988) (Figure 1).

Passive methods of treating mine water use chemical and biological processes that decrease metal concentrations and neutralize acidity. Compared with conventional chemical treatment, passive methods generally require more land area, but use less costly reagents and require less operational attention and maintenance. Currently, three types of passive technologies exist: aerobic wetlands, organic substrate wetlands, and anoxic limestone drains. Aerobic wetlands promote mixed oxidation and hydrolysis reactions, and are most effective when the raw mine water is net alkaline. Organic substrate wetlands promote anaerobic bacterial activity that results in the precipitation of metal sulfides and the generation of bicarbonate alkalinity. Anoxic limestone drains generate bicarbonate alkalinity and can be useful for the pretreatment of mine water before it flows into a wetland. Rates of metal and acidity removal for passive systems have been developed empirically by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. Aerobic wetlands remove Fe and Mn from alkaline water at rates of 10-20 and 0.5- 1.0 g. m-2? d-1, respectively. Wetlands with a composted organic substrate remove acidity from mine water at rates of 3-9 g. m-2? d-1?. A model for the design and sizing of passive treatment systems is presented in this report.

Globalization and the search for new ore deposits inevitably lead to investment in foreign markets. Investors need to be aware of the effect of their venture on regional, social and economic issues when they invest. Decades of detailed statistics from various sources can be integrated and analyzed to predict the social-economic impact of investment, thereby mitigating risk. To this end, the correlation among variables such as foreign direct investment into mining (FDIM), reserves, and socio-economic indexes is examined. The investigation focuses on South America from 1992 to 2000. Throughout the past decade, South America has benefited from capital investment from more developed countries. This huge investment by the mining industry has impacted the South American economies and can be measured directly using the FDIM. Other economic variables investigated include mining gross domestic product, direct employment, and human development indexes. The correlation is based on data compiled from the World Bank, international risk assessment agencies, the United States Geological Survey (USGS), and the information agencies of various South American countries. Initial analysis of the economic data suggests various expected outcomes. For example, foreign investors may disregard a measured, highly negative country risk in deference to the quality of its mineral resources. It is important to note that the standard measures of country risk published by investment analysts are not industry or investor-specific. In the case of the investor, the level of accepted risk is based on their managed investment portfolio. It is noted that arguments for level-playing fields may be the antithesis of globalization. The discovery and exploitation of ore bodies in a globalized environment necessitates the development of economic measures that standardize mining-specific risk variables and trends. The latest published information on the security of mineral investments in South America is investigated by integrating databases of economic, geologic, production, human indexes, and risk ranking.

Mining activities belong to human history, they are lost in the mists of time. They usually impact on large portions of the territory, both directly (exploitation areas and logistic activities directly related to exploitation) and indirectly (exploited material handling, processing and storage areas). As a result, at the end of mine life cycle, dismissed areas usually cannot be directly re-utilized without efficient and well addressed rehabilitation actions. Main goal of the proposed approach was to analyze the results obtained when a set of procedures, based on the collection and the analysis of remote sensed data, is developed to evaluate the effect of rehabilitation of land contaminated by extractive industry activities and to perform a monitoring and registration of the environmental impact of such operations by the application and the integration of modern information technologies, as Earth Observation (EO) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The study was developed in the framework of the EU-Asia program of the European union (EXTRACT-IT Project-Contract No: CN/ASIA IT&C/006 (89870): Application of Information Technologies for the sustainable management of Extractive industry activities) and it was addressed to three different dismissed mine areas in India, Thailand and China, respectively. The results, in terms of methodologies selected, strategies applied and results obtained, are described with particular reference to Fuxin coal mine area in China.

Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) have more or less become the preferred method of tunneling in various ground conditions and Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) or microprocessors are standard features on TBMs to monitor and record various sensory systems on the machine providing the possibility for machine automation and control. The data collected from these sensory systems and channeled through PLC is stored for real-time analysis or use by the operators. Based on typical construction specifications, part of the information collected in the process is shared with the project management team representing the owner. Machine data automatically acquired during TBM advance is typically processed by specialized software to offer the project team data visualization and evaluation options. Interfacing with Geographic Information System (GIS), Computer-Aided Design (CAD), 3-D geologic model, instrumentation data bases, and Document Management Systems (DMS) allows for developing Building Information Models (BIM) of the tunnel’s as-built condition. Application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) processes such as Machine Learning (ML) have already been used for analysis of data, including performance prediction of hard rock TBMs, and exhibited the potential of big data analytics in improving the productivity of the operations. This paper outlines anticipated disruptive technological advances with implications on geotechnical exploration, TBM operation, face condition tracking, subsurface risk allocation, and claims management in the future.

While new jobs and taxes are major incentives for support of mining, stakeholders must also be assured that current jobs, resources and environment will be protected. Mining companies can help achieve stakeholder support by frankly addressing Acid Rock Drainage CARD) issues. To prevent ARD, miners must begin early in the mine life-cycle to develop an ARD management plan and integrate it into the mining operation. As this proactive preventative program is initiated, mining companies also need to engage and collaborate with stakeholders to insure that their expectations and needs are met. Stakeholder engagement is enhanced as mining companies emphasizes the value of clean and available water for current and future generations.

Many mines rely on toxic gas sensors to help maintain a safe and healthy work environment. This report describes a prototype monitoring system developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) that uses light to power and communicate with several remote toxic gas sensors. The design is based on state-of-the-art optical-to-electrical power converters, solid-state diode lasers, and fiber optics. This design overcomes several problems associated with conventional wire-based systems by providing complete electrical isolation between the remote sensors and the central monitor. The prototype performed well during a 2-week field trial in the USBM Pittsburgh Research Center Safety Research Coal Mine.

Operational excellence is generally known as a management system integrated across critical functions that is geared towards continually improving operational performance. Functional areas such as health, environment and safety, quality and human resources are the focus of many corporate-wide operational excellence programs. Operational excellence also focuses on improving areas such as customer orientation, employee empowerment as well as process, and systems optimization. It is widely viewed as critical to sustaining business performance improvement. Although it is difficult to find a universally accepted definition, or even common foundation in many respects, operational excellence remains a popular term in the business world. Many organizations have developed their own version of organization excellence, influenced by such individual factors, other similar institutions or even third-party service providers. A mining organization is no different from other organizations in that adopting and implementing effective operational excellence programs can dramatically improve business execution and performance across regional or global interests. This paper brings together various perspectives of operational excellence and reconciles them for a useful composite for the mining industry. While most agree that operational excellence should include normal functions in a manufacturing operation such as production, maintenance and engineering and processes such as quality, environmental and continuous improvement, many other factors for operational excellence seem to vary from perspective to perspective. Thus, programs that manufacturers engage in may seem the same, but may, in fact, be different in key areas. This may affect organizational performance in tangible ways. Management must buy into the company?s definition of operational excellence and be dedicated to achieving it. A review of many of the existing definitions of operational excellence, explicit or embedded as part of a program, seems to yield the following common factors: ? It should help organizations better execute their processes and services. ? It should be geared towards improving quality ? It requires that the various operations should be aligned with the overall enterprise strategy. ? It should be geared towards continuous improvement. A composite of operational excellence definitions suggest that it is: ? Geared towards helping the organization achieve sustained profitability; ? tied to strategic alignment and business objectives; ? tied to solid investment strategies; ? integrated as part of the culture, process, time plan and performance; ? a relevant performance measurement system; ? extended to include all aspects of the supply chain (including external suppliers); ? integrated with health, safety and environmental (HSE) aspects. And, while the pursuit of operational excellence intuitively suggests that businesses should improve, it is very difficult to achieve given the difficult challenges facing companies today. Mining businesses face numerous pressures to perform in a global marketplace such as demand, energy cost, variable cost and pricing fluctuations as well as infrastructure challenges to further confound the environment. THE American Engineering Council, which is the working body of The Federated American Engineering Societies, held its first meeting in Washington, Nov. 18 and 19, 1920. The Federated American Engineering Societies was formed in Washington in June and is composed of engineering and technical societies, national, state, local and regional. These Member Societies elect delegates to the American Engineering Council, which is the administrative body of the Federated. The meeting was called to order by Richard L. Humphrey, Chairman of the Joint Conference Com¬mittee, and the program (which is printed below) was carried out without substantial change by E. S. Carman, who was elected temporary chairman. Under the Constitution, the Council appoints an Executive Board, the members of which are chosen according to the proportional membership of the vari¬ous Member Societies in their respective districts. Under this plan, with the present membership, 'the national societies will have 14 members and the local societies 6 members on the Executive Board.

A COMMITTEE of the American Railroad Association, consisting of Samuel Rea, president of the Pennsylvania System, Chairman; F. D. Underwood, president of the Erie Railroad; A. T. Dice, president of the Philadelphia & Reading Railroad; E. J. Pearson, president of the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad; and C. H. Markham, president of the Illinois Railroad (who was represented at the meeting by J. F. Porterfield of his system), met at the headquarters of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, New York, on April 6 to assist in the Coal and Coke Committee's attempt to solve the bituminous coal problem. There was a full discussion of the questions of seasonal freight rates and the purchase by the railroads during the slack months of their winter's supply of coal. As the question of fuel supply for the railroads is in the hands of the Railroad Association, as well as the coal operators, it was vital that it should be represented at this important conference. The situation from the point of view of the mine operators was presented very thoroughly. No seasonal rates were considered necessary for the year 1920, and, as this matter requires considerable thought, it will be given thorough study and worked out in detail at a subsequent meeting.

The founder of social psychology is sometimes identified as Kurt Lewin. In a 1947 article, Kurt Lewin coined the term ‘group dynamics’. He described this notion as the way that groups and individuals act and react to changing circumstances. Lewin theorised that when a group is established it becomes a unified system with unique dynamics that cannot be understood by evaluating members individually. The discipline of social psychology really emerged out of World War II and tackled questions associated with human judgement and decision-making by the Nazis. For a comprehensive look at the development of social psychology look at Abelson, Frey and Gregg (2004).Social psychology is concerned with the way social arrangements affect human judgement and decision-making. What the author has done is apply the knowledge of this new discipline to an understanding of risk, safety and leadership. This paper will explain some of the developments in social psychology, such as the discovery of the bystander effect, Groupthink, bounded rationality, heuristics, risk homeostasis and the Milgram effect.The social psychology of risk tackles the way decisions are made about risk in their social context. Unless organisations understand that decision-making is socially conditioned, they are unlikely to be able to tackle the complexities of culture change or the development of risk maturity.The paper will offer a new understanding of why people do what they do, how risk makes sense and why a ‘dumb down’ approach to safety is dangerous. Hydrostatic trunnion bearings were recently provided on large Semi-Autogenous Grinding (SAG) mills driven by wraparound motors assembled on the head to shell flanges. A conventional SAG mill would have a ring gear driven through one or two pinions. The effects of the magnetic air gap forces from this new SAG mill drive arrangement on the performance of the bearing are discussed. A step-by-step systematic analytical de-sign of the hydrostatic trunnion bearing is presented, followed by a discussion of grinding mill erection requirements to conform with the design. A brief comparison with other bearing types and their response to the effects of magnetic air gap forces are also presented.

AN ADEQUATE, dependable, and continuing supply of raw materials is indispensable to tile the United States and its industries in meeting the needs of an expanding Population, a rising standard of living, and the national security. The primary responsibility for appraising the status of the country's mineral supply and for making appropriate recommendations within the executive branch and to the Congress has been pinned in the U.S. Department of the Interior. In fulfilling its role of governmental responsibility for raw-material supplies and their efficient utilization, the Bureau of Mines has analyzed the factors in current and future mineral supplies and demands and has developed 87 statements for specific commodities that assess the national position and problems for these metals, minerals, and mineral fuels. These statements, which constitute the chapters of this volume, are based on lire assumption that nearly till production and consumption of materials in the United States are to be by private individuals and organizations, in accordance with the Nation's devotion to a private-enterprise economy.

The following abstract of the minutes of the final Adjourned Annual Business Meeting, held Nov. 12, 1912, in the office of the Institute, 29 West 39th Street, New York City, is here presented for the information of the membership at large. On the announcement by the Secretary that there was a quorum present, President James F. Kemp called the meeting to order. The minutes of the Adjourned Annual Business Meeting of Oct. 7, 1912, were read and approved. (Sec p. xi,Bulletin No. 71, November). Prof. Jos. W. Richards, in behalf of the Special Committee of the Board of Directors and the Council (Messrs. Richards, Kirchhoff, and Rand), withdrew the two proposed amendments to the Constitution offered by the said Committee at the Adjourned Annual Business Meeting of Oct. 7, 1912. (See Bulletin. No. 70, October, 1912, p. vi., and Circular Announcement No. 8, Oct. 15, 1912, p. 15.) Professor Richards presented a syllabus of the proposed amendments to the Constitution and By-Laws prepared by the Special Committee. Several members present discussed various sections of the proposed Constitution, and the Committee advised that the suggestions would he duly considered before submitting the final document, which would be duly presented and sent to the membership at large at least 30 days before the next Annual Business Meeting, Feb. 18, 1913. Professor Richards presented a resolution, seconded by Mr. Kirchhoff, making a change in the present Certificate of Incorporation, so that it would conform to the proposed changes in the Constitution and By-Laws; said resolution was unanimously adopted. Professor Richards presented another amendment to the Constitution, which had been purposely omitted from the printed list, but had been requested by many members, namely, the creation of a " Class of Fellows." This question was freely discussed at the Cleveland meeting (see Bulletin No. 71, November, 1912, p. 1348), and in view of the diversity of opinion it was-decided to present it in separate form for separate action of the membership at large at the Annual Business Meeting, Feb. 18, 1913. In answer to question, the President announced that the proposed amendments to the Constitution and By-Laws presented by Messrs. Corning and Stone at the Adjourned Annual Business Meeting, Oct. 7, 1912, and published in Circular Announcement No. 8, Oct. 15, 1912, were still on record. Professor Richards presented a syllabus of the proposed amendments to the By-Laws, and several sections were discused by members present, but no action of record was taken. Mr. Charles F. Rand read a letter from Mr. L. K. Armstrong, Sec-retary of the Spokane Local Section of the Institute, referring to the proposed amendments to the Constitution, and he announced that many of Mr. Armstrong's suggestions were, in one form or another, already incorporated in the proposed amendments submitted by the Special Committee. A special vote of thanks was passed to Dr. Albert R. Ledoux for the valuable assistance rendered by him to the Special Committee in the preparation of the proposed amendments to the Constitution and By-Laws.

Existe uma tendência de aumento na utilização da tecnologia de RFID na automação industrial, bem como em outros setores: varejo, aviação e transportes. Com o RFID, um objeto pode ser identificado por uma etiqueta eletrônica e sua existência constatada automaticamente. No entanto, sua localização exata permanece desconhecida para os usuários. Para a localização, os estudos realizados são satisfatórios quanto as técnicas de rastreamento de etiquetas RFID, porém, não consideram as possíveis interferências na comunicação provocadas pelos objetos presentes em locais reais. Este trabalho propõe um ambiente de laboratório que simula as interferências do Ambiente Industrial nas técnicas de localização indoor de etiquetas RFID, como obstáculos na comunicação entre etiquetas e antenas RFID; e materiais usados na fabricação das superfícies dos objetos, sobre as quais a etiqueta RFID é aplicada. Os resultados mostram que as técnicas RSSI e AoA são adequadas para localização indoor de etiquetas RFID, sendo que a segunda técnica permite maior exatidão na localização.

This report describes the results of a field study conducted by the Bureau of Mines during 1956 and 1957 on manganese-and iron-bearing mineral deposits in the southern district of Aroostook County, Maine. The work was undertaken to determine the extent of deposits largely concealed under glacial drift and to obtain subsurface samples for manganese mineral identification and research in ore dressing and extractive metallurgy. The investigation was confined to the Westford Hill-Daggett Hill area in Hodgdon Township and to the Stewart prospects and vicinity in Linneus Township. Over 50 magnetic anomalies were mapped by magnetometric surveys in the Westford Hill-Daggett Hill area, Hodgdon Township. The largest anomaly, as outlined by the 1,000-gamma contour, indicates a deposit 3,200 feet long with a maximum width of 350 feet. The smallest anomaly measures about 10 feet wide by 25 feet long.
