Oil bearing rocks, usually found at depths of 2,000 to 10,000 it, are elastically deformed by overburden pressure. Although the change in porosity with pressure in a number of example rock.: has been shown to be small, it was thought that overburden pressure might have a significant effect on permeability. This note presents results of an investigation to determine the magnitude of the change in permeabilty with pressure. In routine core analysis permeabilities are measured on rock samples which are not under overburden pressure. If permeablity measured in this way differs from permeabilities measured under overburden pressure, a systematic error is introduced into well productivity calculations. The experiments described in this report were made to determine the magnitude of the change and thus to give an estimate of the error introduced into the calculations. The error introduced by the neglect of the change in permeability when overburden pressure is removed may account for part of the difference between well productivity calculated from core analysis and the actual well productivity. The results obtained in this investigation have only quali-tative significance because of the difficulty in reproducing in the laboratory the stress conditions on the rock buried in the earth. The assumption which is usually made is that the rocks in the earth are under a uniform pressure equal to the weight per unit area of the vertical overburden column from the rock in question to the surface of the earth less the pressure of the liquid in the pores of the rock. For an overburden consisting of sandstones and shales (of assumed average specific gravity of 2.3) and for a liquid pressure equal to the pressure in a salt water column (of specific gravity 1.0) reaching from the rock to the surface, the resulting net pressure on the rock is approximately 0.56 psi per ft of depth. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD Clean, dry sandstone core plugs one in. in diameter and about three in. long were mounted in a copper foil jacket as shown in Fig. 3 or molded in a Lucite jacket as shown in Fig. 4. All cores except those labeled "2" in Fig. 1 and "8" in Fig. 2 were measured in the copper foil jacket. Cores "2" and "8" were measured in the Lucite jacket. The jacketed core was placed in a high pressure hydraulic bomb in which the liquid pressure outside the jacket could be raised to 15,000 psi. Flow lines from the core were brought out of the bomb through special fittings in the bomh head and connected to a laboratory type gas permeameter. Measurements were made with nitrogen gas; the maximum mean gas pressure in the core was 16.1 psia. RESULTS The specific permeability of sandstone decreases with in. crease in overburden pressure. Most of the decrease takes place over the range of zero to 3,000 psi overburden pressure. If the net pressure on the rock is assumed to be 0.56 psi per ft of depth as discussed above, 3,000 psi of overburden pressure is equivalent to about 5,000 ft of overburden. At 3,000 psi overburden pressure, the permeability of the eight sandstone core samples tested ranged from 59 to 89 per cent of the permeability without overburden pressure. Figs. 1 and 2 show the permeability reduction as a function of overburden pressure. The permeability of the eight cores without overburden pressure ranged from 4.35 md to 632 md; these permeabilities are listed in Figs. 1 and 2. REFERENCES 1. New developments have occurred in Wyoming's industrial minerals industry since the 32nd Forum on the Geology of Industrial Minerals in Laramie, Wyoming in 1996. The soda ash trona and bentonite industries have experienced overall growth. Gypsum and limestone production have remained constant, but have the potential for dramatic growth. The mining of zeolite ceased in 1997. The struggling dimension stone industry has increased production, but development has lagged behind the schedule predicted in 1996. The construction of a container glass plant and associated production of glass raw materials, as predicted in 1996 and imminent in 1998, is now on hold due to unforeseen market factors. Increases in railroad and highway construction have, and will, greatly increase the production of construction aggregate for local uses. An iron carbide industry, not foreseen in 1996, is in the planning stages.

THE origin of wrought iron may be taken as coincident with the earliest record of ferrous products. The limitations of primitive methods of manufacture undoubtedly resulted in a material conforming to the general characteristics of what we now classify as wrought iron. Iron has been known from prehistoric times. It is frequently mentioned in Egyptian literature, and some samples in the British Museum are believed to date from 3733 B. C. Iron instruments, tools and weapons were used in Greece in 1400 B. C., and in Assyria and. Italy in 1100 B. C. History records their use in Central and Western Europe in 1000 B. C. And in Styria and Carinthia before the Christian era. The noted Pillar of Delhi is generally assumed to date from 400 A. D. The use of iron was general in Europe in the Roman Empire, and heat treatment of weapons and tools was then practiced. All of this early iron was the result of direct reduction from the ore. It serves to illustrate the ease with which the extraction may be effected, and to point out the well known principle that a malleable product of relatively high purity may be produced from high-grade iron ore at temperatures well below the fusion point of-the metal. The fact is also emphasized that there is no novelty in the seemingly ideal and constantly recurring attempts to effect direct reduction. Economic and engineering considerations have been dominant factors in dictating today's two-step practice in the manufacture of wrought iron and steel. Bear' in mind that all of this history antedated the blast furnace, and a knowledge and use of cast iron. It was only in attempts to get greater output by use of shaft-type furnaces, that cast iron was produced in Germany in the period 1300 to 1400 A. D. This was the result of longer contact with the carbon of the fuel, and higher temperatures in the furnace. This period marked the beginning of the existing two-stage operation, involving as the second step the refining of the. cast iron to a malleable product. For a time this was effected in small hearths not unlike a blacksmith's forge.

This paper highlights two aspects of the mineral sands industry in Australia: the development of the industry from approximately 1870 through to 1980, and the author’s experience in the industry from 1966 to date.The first real heavy mineral (HM) mining in Australia started in 1870 with the mining of heavy mineral slicks on the beaches along the east coast of Australia. The real potential of Australian heavy minerals was however only realised in the 1920s with the first production of a heavy mineral concentrate that was shipped to Canada for processing. Post WW 11 and the Korean War, Australia was the largest producer of mineral sands products in the world as well as a significant developer of associated separation equipment and technology. The number of producing companies in the east coast peaked at 33 in 1957, was reduced to ten by 1965, and subsequently further reduced to five in 1980 as a result of potential mining areas being declared National Parks or Conservation Reserves. Today there is one company, Unimin Australia Pty Ltd (formally Consolidated Rutile Ltd) operating on the east coast. In contrast there were three companies on the west coast in 1965, four companies in 1980, and four companies today (albeit not the same companies).There have been considerable ups and downs for the industry in Australia, however world wide it was renowned in the past as being an industry that attracted numerous interesting and innovative characters that played a major role in developing it into the vibrant industry that it is today. This, given the current climate, is predicted to continue into the future.The author has been continuously involved in the industry for over 45 years from 1966, initially as an electrician at Consolidated Rutile Ltd culminating in the role of General Manager/President of Iluka Resources Limited USA, prior to his retirement in 2009. His exposure has been world wide and has covered all aspects of the industry but in the main focused on project development and operational areas. During this time there have been significant technological advances, yet to some extent the basic principles have not changed at all. Some of the most noteworthy advances include the development of the Wright Spiral in 1977, the development of the Reading High Intensity Wet Magnet (WHIMS), the rare earth magnets, the CRL floating thickener and the improvement of analytical techniques. From a safety, health and environmental perspective there has been significant advances that the industry has much to be proud of. These include wetland restoration both in Australia and in the US, the restoration of farmland in Virginia and Capel, and the re-establishment of native species, for example at Eneabba and Richards Bay to name but a few.

Synthetically produced magnesium hydroxide serves as the precursor for much of the magnesium oxide produced in the world today. Magnesium oxide, in a variety of physical and chemically reactive forms, is a very important commodity. It is used as the main component in refractories employed in steelmaking furnaces and in many base metal refining furnaces. In the chemical industry, it serves as a raw material in the production of epsom salts, rayon acetate, oxychloride and oxysulfate cements and magnesium sulfonates. It is a minor component in fertilizers and animal feeds. It serves as the starting material for producing fused magnesia, used as an electrical insulator in electric heating elements. It is employed in the magnesium sulfite process for pulp digestion in the paper industry. Additional uses are in SO2 scrubbers, as a neutralizing agent in the tanning industry and as a component in rubber compounding. Magnesium oxide is produced not only from synthetically produced magnesium hydroxide. It is produced from natural magnesites, natural brucites, and natural and synthetic hydro-magnesites. Synthetic magnesium hydroxide, as a starting material provides more control of the chemical purity and chemical reactivity of resulting magnesium oxide products because of the uniform nature, chemical and physical, of the hydroxide that can be produced. Synthetic magnesium hydroxide is produced by precipitation of Mg (OH)2 from magnesium chloride bearing seawater or natural brines through the use of a base such as Ca(OH)2 or NaOH.

FOR many years it has been the invariable custom of the Institute, in addition to its annual meeting in February, to hold a technical meeting in the fall in some mining or metallurgical center in the West. As the activities of the Institute have increased, and especially since the absorption 'of the American Institute of Metals, there have for a number of years been two fall meetings. Never before in the history of the Institute have there been three meetings in addition to the annual meeting in February; in 1920, however, three important fall meetings are to be held. The general Institute trip will be made this fall to the Lake Superior iron and copper country. Members will leave Buffalo on August 20 by steamer, visit the copper mines in and about Houghton, the iron mines of the Marquette and Iron Ranges of Michigan and the iron mines of the Mesabi Range in Minnesota, and' return to Buffalo by steamer on September 3. Technical sessions will be held at Houghton, Minneapolis and Duluth. For a long period it was customary for the Institute to visit the Lake Superior country about every seven years. This trip, however, will be the first visit since 1904. The unprecedented development in both copper and iron mining in this section during this period will make this trip of unusual importance. In addition, a notable series of papers will be presented.

"An airborne dust cloud is an ensemble of particles of varied size, density, shape and states of aggregation. An understanding and quantifying of the dispersion and deposition of the dust generated in mines is essential to the development of measures for reducing worker exposure to dust. In coal mining, the major portion of the dust is generated during the cutting of coal using a shearer or a continuous miner.The major phenomenon affecting ambient concentration is the deposition of dust. Particle deposition may take place due to the effect of gravitational, inertial, electrostatic, and thermal forces, and mechanisms such as Brownian and eddy diffusion and inertial impaction, The three major mechanisms of deposition in turbulent flow in mines are diffusion (Brownian and eddy), sedimentation and inertial impaction. The mechanisms determining particle deposition are size depend,From a review of the literature, there appears to be a knowledge gap in the understanding of the deposition phenomena in mine airways. In order to obtain a better understanding of the deposition of dust for various particle sizes, and to develop a set of data for evaluating predictive mathematical models for dust-flow in mines, a series of dust flow experiments was performed under controlled conditions in mine airways. It appears that the deposition data generally follow the theoretical behavior of dust based on the combined effect of diffusional and gravitational deposition. In this paper, the findings of the study on the deposition of dust in mine airways and its dependence on size, velocity and concentration are discussed. A set of deposition equations that could be used to determine the approximate deposition at various points in a mine airway are presented.The major factor affecting ambient dust concentration in mine airways is the deposition of dust. Particle deposition may take place due to the effect of gravitational, inertial, electrostatic, and thermal forces, and mechanisms such as Brownian diffusion, eddy diffusion and inertial impaction. The major mechanisms of deposition in turbulent flow in mines are diffusion (Brownian and eddy), sedimentation and inertial impaction. Inertial impaction is significant only during changes in direction, but the change in direction of flow with resultant powerful eddies may cause increased re-entrainment of the particles, thus having a compensating effect. While the literature in aerosol sciences contain several references on deposition, most studies were done in small diameter tubes for diffusional deposition (Liu and Agarwal, 1974). The deposition data from small diameter, short tube experiments may not be applicable to studying deposition in mine airways that have large areas and extend several hundred meters. Further, the change in concentration along the length of a mine airway may significantly affect the deposition, an aspect that may not be easily determined in short tubes in laboratory experiments."

IN an ingot of germanium solidified progressively from the bottom by a method' devised by J. H. Scaff and H. C. Theuerer, examination discloses ex- IH. C. Torrey and C. A. Whitmer, Crystal Rectifiers. p. 364. 1948. New York. McGraw-Hill Pub. Co. tensive twin relationships. A slice taken about midway in a cylindrical ingot approximately 3/4 in. in diameter and 1 1/2 in. in length, after etching and polishing to delineate different orientations, is shown in fig. la. The orientations of the regions designated with letters were determined by Laue X-ray back-reflection methods and plotted on stereograms. The orientation relationships of the designated components were determined by comparing the values for the nine angles between the three respective cube poles of each orientation with the values calculated in a formal treatment of octahedral multiple twinning in cubic crystals. Germanium, diamond cubic in structure, has the octahedral twinning habit. I am indebted to K. H. Storks for the calculation of the angular relationships of cube poles in octahedral twinning to four orders. The set of values for the nine angles is distinctive of the order of twinning. Confirmation for a multiple twin relationship is obtained from the determined indices of the mirror planes. These exist for all orders of twinning through the third and for some of the fourth." If the orientations are not those for twinning, then the nine angles for the cube poles do not correspond in value and distribution to those formally calculated. Since all nine angles must correspond in values and distribution of values to the calculated ones, the Laue method with a precision of one or two degrees is adequate to establish or deny with confidence the existence of multiple twins. Regions of the same orientation can also frequently be identified by the optical reflections. For example, the narrow twin bands in A at 2: 00 o'clock have orientation B1. The interesting twin relationships shown schematically in fig. lb were found for the section in fig. la. Most of this slice was made up of orientation, A, appearing in widely separated regions. Of the four possible first order twins of A, three were present in this slice and are designated by B with subscripts. Four second order twins of A are designated by C with subscripts. It is worth emphasizing that two of these, C, and C,, are second orders of A through the first order missing in this section. Two regions, designated by D with subscripts are third order twins of A. D2 is a sixth order twin of D,. All orientations found were ascribable to multiple twinning, as if the orientations in this section originated earlier in solidification from a single nucleus. The presence of extensive multiple twinning to- gether with the absence of other orientations appears to be a characteristic result in many instances of solidification of germanium. Fertile conditions for twinning probably exist in the array of atoms in the diamond cubic structure. The high order twins in the section shown, it is reasonable to presume, are the result of progressive octahedral twinning through several generations in the material freezing earlier. Some of these generations do not appear in this section, it is suggested, because their orientations with respect to the growth direction were unfavorable for survival. The extensive twinning is probably promoted during solidification by constraint imposed by volume increase, and to an irregular growth front. Twinning may also be due, in part, to the attempt of the solidifying region to attain the orientation most favorable to the growth direction (maximum thermal gradient). The nucleus for a twinned orientation could have its origin in a "stacking fault" on the close-packed octahedral plane. Further work is being done in which the course of twinning throughout an ingot is being studied. The results appear to be important in the general theory of solidification.

SHUTTING-IN the Rangely gas well was an interesting problem because of the high rock pressure and the volume of gas developed, as well as the difficulties encountered. After nearly a week's open flow, the rock pressure was 1275 lb., which corresponds with a 2950 ft. hydrostatic head. The volume of gas was between 45,000,000 and 50,000,000 cu. ft. per day. The Rangeley oil field, which now has a daily production of 100 bbl. of shale oil from shallow depth, lies approximately 100 miles north and 30 miles west of Grand Junction, Colo.; not far from the Utah line. The, well we are considering was drilled on the apex of a large clearly defined. Structure1 in the SE.1/4 sec. 30, T. 2 S., R. 102 W., and entered the gas sand at 2954 ft. on March 2, 1925. The condition of the well at the time the gas was encountered was as follows: 20 ft. of 20-in. conductor cemented with ten sacks at 40 ft. The 15 1/2-in. casing was pulled when the 12 1/2-in. was cemented. 1166 ft. of 12 1/2-in. casing, cemented with fifteen sacks. 2531 ft. of 10-in, casing, cemented with ten sacks; neither the 12 1/2-in. nor the 10-in, casing shut off water but they were cemented for protection. 2938 ft. of 8 1/4-in. 36-lb. casing, hanging on a spider in the collar with a forged-steel, high-pressure bradenhead between it and the 10-in. casing. An 8 1/4-in. drilling, or master, gate and a control head were in place on the 8 1/4-in. casing, and all was in readiness for the bringing in of the well.

During 1924 a number of lives were lost and other men incapacitated by the toxic effects of gases produced in blasting in massive sulphides. In one mine, three men working in a raise were caught by gases from blasting a drift round in massive sulphide on the level. The round in the drift was shot ahead of time and it was necessary for the three men to travel through the gases to the intake air course. Two of the men lost their lives, and the third was injured, apparently for life. Other men at this same mine have been caught in the gases at blasting time and seriously injured. At a second mine, the gases from blasting in sulphides appear to be very dangerous, and it was necessary to send a number of men who were caught in such gases to the hospital. One man who was seriously gassed has not recovered in over a year is time. Another man similarly gassed soon died of influenza.

"AbstractThe background to the harmonization of geotechnical standards that has taken place in recent years in Europe has been the move to more economic and political integration following World War II that has led to the formation of the European Union. Prior to 2010 the standards used in the European countries for geotechnical design, investigation and testing and for the carrying out geotechnical work, such as the installation of piles, were the different national standards, which were not harmonized. The harmonization of geotechnical standards in Europe started in 1981 with work on a model Eurocode 7 for geotechnical design that led eventually to publication by CEN, the European Committee for Standardization, of the European Standard version of Eurocode 7 in 2004. In parallel with the work on Eurocode 7, a large number of associated harmonized standards have been, and are being, prepared by CEN and by the International Standards Organization (ISO) for geotechnical investigation and testing and for the execution of geotechnical works. Standards published by CEN must be adopted by the CEN member countries and all conflicting standards withdrawn. Hence all the CEN countries have adopted the same the harmonized text of Eurocode 7, but with National Annexes that allow national choice with regard to Design Approach and partial factor values. The adoption of Eurocode 7 and its associated geotechnical standards has removed the barriers to geotechnical activity in Europe due to the presence of different national standards. It has also enhanced the ability of EU firms to compete in the global market.Background to harmonization of geotechnical standards in EuropeThe initial moves towards the harmonization of geotechnical standards in Europe can be related to the economic and political developments that took place in the period immediately following World War II to revive the economies of Western Europe. Europe at that time was divided by a political and, in many places, a physical barrier, known as the Iron Curtain, into two very different and separate zones: communist in the east and non-communist in the west. In 1952 the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) was formed, linking 6 countries: Belgium, West Germany, France, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands, and establishing a common market in coal and steel. The ECSC was the first international organization to be established on the basis of supranational principles whereby negotiated power is delegated to an authority by the governments of the member states. In 1957 the ECSC became the European Economic Community (EEC), also known as the Common Market in the English-speaking world, with the aim to bring about economic integration. With the addition of Denmark, Ireland and the UK in 1973 and Greece in 1981, followed by Portugal and Spain in 1986, this led to the formation of the European Union (EU) in 1993. East and West Germany were reunified in 1990, following the fall of the Iron Curtain in 1989. In 1995, Austria, Finland and Sweden joined the EU, and since then the numbers of countries in the EU has increased to 28, many of which are countries that were formerly behind the Iron Curtain."

"Re-entrainment refers to dislodgement of particles deposited by both atmospheric and nonatmospheric processes and their subsequent insertion into a flowing field. Formation of sand dunes, snow drifts, soil erosion and fugitive dust emissions are a few examples of the natural occurrence of re-entrainment. Re-entrainment studies have been done for the estimation of potential hazards from nuclear fallouts. The phenomenon of re-entrainment has been utilized for the cleaning of wafers and filters. Re-entrainment is associated with both surface and underground mining activities. However, studies on dust re-entrainment in mine atmospheres are limited. Understanding the re-entrainment phenomenon is important because dust particles lying seemingly harmless on the ground and adhering to numerous surfaces can get re-entrained and become a health and safety hazard.There are significant differences in the kind of re-entrainment encountered in underground mines and those in other fields of interest. These major differences are air velocity, direction of air flow, particle size, amount of particles, and time of exposure. While numerous studies have been done in other fields to identify the role of interacting variables and their contribution to the mechanisms of re-entrainment, no similar reported work is available for dust in mine atmospheres.In this paper, recent research efforts on re-entrainment are reviewed. The most suitable form of representing re-entrainment in underground coal mine atmosphere is presented. Various approaches to studying re-entrainment phenomenon in mines are also outlined.In the mineral industries, formation of dust particles of widely varying sizes is a natural outcome of the fragmentation required in mining the solid resources. Fine particles in mine atmospheres, particularly in the respirable size range, are a threat to the health and safety of the miners when present in high concentrations. In 1980 the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) Committee on the Measurement and Control of Respirable Dust in Mines recommended that the spatial and temporal characteristics (of fragments produced in coal mining) need to be understood so that the exposure of workers to the dust can be controlled. Recently several studies have been performed to understand the fundamental behavior of the airborne respirable dust in mine airways (Bhaskar, 1987; Qin, 1988; Polat, 1989; Bode, 1990)."

"Past Growth The Canadian coal industry has grown rapidly during the past two decades. Coal production increased over four-fold between 1965 and 1982; consumption almost doubled, imports remained relatively flat, exports soared and total demand increased nearly two and a half times. Coal production grew during this period at an average rate of 8.60/o, compounded annually; this remarkable performance is shown in Table 1 and Figure 1. The relationship between production and consumption is shown in Figure 1, where in 1981 the total Canadian production of coal for the first time exceeded total Canadian consumption. ln Figure 2, the relationship between imports from the United States and Canadian coal exports is shown; in_ 1981 again for the first time, exports offshore exceeded imports into Canada. The rapid growth in Canadian coal use between 1965 and 1982 followed a major decline after World War II, as the country moved rapidly to an oil based economy. Changes in consumption patterns between 1945 and 1982 are shown ~n Table 2. Railway consumption of coal was reduced to zero m the early 1960s. The industrial and domestic consumers market share fell from about 660/o in 1960 to 6.70/o in 1975; this share, however, appears to have stabilized in recent years and actual volumes can be expected to increase in the future. The steel industry's share of the coal market fell over the same period, but the volume in recent years has remained fairly constant at about seven megatonnes per year.Perhaps the most significant change in consumption is in the share of coal consumed in the generation of electricity; this has increased from 80/o in 1960 to over three quarters of the total Canadian coal consumed in 1982. This increase in thermal coal consumption has been supplied by indigenous coal, and was accompanied by a decreasing share for coal imported from the U.S.A. into central Canada. It is expected, because of the nuclear power commitment in Ontario, that this share will continue to decrease, although the total volume of coal imported may increase slowly over time. This will likely also have a dampening effect on future coal sales to Ontario from western Canada."

In October 1939, a drilling program was commenced on the Atlantic seaboard of Brazil, with three steam rotary rigs of medium capacity. One of these was assigned to the State of Alagbas and the other two to the State of Bahia. During the remaining few months of 1939 and during the year 1940, some eight wells were drilled, two in Alagbas and six in Bahia. Two small producers were found in the latter state. In early 1941 three medium-weight Diesel rigs were added to the equipment, thus permitting the drilling of some 15 wells during the year 1941. The two small producers found in 1940 in the State of Rahia were near the city of Silo Salvador. In 1941 three additional small wells were brought in, in the same area, and a further producer on an isolated structure some 75 km. to the northwest of this production. No commercial production has been found in the State of Alagbas. Approximately 26 wells have been drilled or are drilling, six of which are producers— five in one area and one in another. The program for 1942 calls for the development of the two areas in which wells have been found and also the drilling of several wildcat structures located either by geophysics or surface geology. In October 1939, a drilling program was commenced on the Atlantic seaboard of Brazil, with three steam rotary rigs of medium capacity. One of these was assigned to the State of Alagbas and the other two to the State of Bahia. During the remaining few months of 1939 and during the year 1940, some eight wells were drilled, two in Alagbas and six in Bahia. Two small producers were found in the latter state. In early 1941 three medium-weight Diesel rigs were added to the equipment, thus permitting the drilling of some 15 wells during the year 1941. The two small producers found in 1940 in the State of Rahia were near the city of Silo Salvador. In 1941 three additional small wells were brought in, in the same area, and a further producer on an isolated structure some 75 km. to the northwest of this production. No commercial production has been found in the State of Alagbas. Approximately 26 wells have been drilled or are drilling, six of which are producers— five in one area and one in another. The program for 1942 calls for the development of the two areas in which wells have been found and also the drilling of several wildcat structures located either by geophysics or surface geology. "An airborne dust cloud is an ensemble of particles of varied size, density, shape and states of aggregation. An understanding and quantifying of the dispersion and deposition of the du.st generated in mines is essential to the development of measures for reducing worker exposure to dust.In coal mining, the major portion of the dust is generated during the cutting of coal using a shearer or a continuous miner. The major phenomenon affecting ambient concentration is the deposition of dust. Panicle deposition may take place due to the effect of gravitational, inertial, electrostatic, and thermal forces, and mechanisms such as Brownian and eddy diffusion and inenial impaction. The three major mechanisms of deposition in turbulent flow in mines are diffusion (Brownian and eddy), sedimentation and inertial impaction. The mechanisms determining panicle deposition are size dependent.From a review of the literature, there appears to be a knowledge gap in the understanding of the deposition phenomena in mine airways. In order to obtain a better understanding of the deposition of dust for various particle sizes, and to develop a set of data for evaluating predictive mathematical models/or dust flow in mines, a series of dust-flow experiments was performed under controlled conditions in mine airways. It appears that the deposition data generally follow the theoretical behavior of dust based on the combined effect of diffusional and gravitational deposition. Jn this paper, the findings of the study on the deposition of dust in mine airways and its dependence on size, velocity and concentration are discussed. A set of deposition equations that could be used to determine the approximate deposition at various points in a mine airway are presented.IntroductionThe major factor affecting ambient dust concentration in mine airways is the deposition of dust. While the literature in aerosol sciences contain several references on deposition, most studies were done in small diameter tubes for diffusional deposition (Liu and Agarwal, 1974). The deposition data from small diameter, short tube experiments may not be applicable to studying deposition in mine airways that have large areas and extend several hundred meters. Further, the change in concentration along the length of a mine airway may significantly affect the deposition an aspect that may not be easily determined in short tubes in laboratory experiments."

Environmental monitoring plays a key role in coal mine safety. In recent years, significant advances have been made in the development of systems suitable for monitoring air in underground coal mines. Because of intensive mining and large capital outlay, the need for higher productivity consistent with safety is well recognized and it appears that environmental monitoring may help achieve this objective. This paper reviews the state-of- the-art in the monitoring technology with particular reference to hazardous gas detection in underground coal mines. The preliminary results obtained from ongoing studies, with regard to continuous monitoring of methane and carbon monoxide in mine air in some of the operations in Western Canada, are discussed. The inadequacies of the methods using spot samples are examined and the need to supplement the present practice with continuous monitoring systems is emphasized.

TWENTY years ago, W. T. Burns, in his paper presented at the Butte Meeting of the Institute, discussed the general scheme then in use in the electrolytic copper refinery of the Anaconda Copper Mining. Co. at Great Falls, Mont., for removing impurities from tank-room electrolyte and controlling its acid content. Since then marked changes have taken place in copper-refinery practice at Great Falls. The electrolytic copper refinery in use in 1913 has been replaced by a new and entirely modern plant capable of producing up to 27,000,000 lb. of cathode copper per month. With the building of the new plant in 1916, the treatment of converter anodes was discontinued. At first the substitution of refined anodes for converter anodes resulted in a decrease in the impurity content of the anodes, but as time went on, changes in metallurgical practices at the smelter resulted in substantial increases in the impurity content of the anodes. The leaching of the silver slime to remove copper before shipment to Raritan for treatment further added to the purification problem. The fact that the scheme of purifying electrolyte which Mr. Burns described in his paper' has proved adequate for our needs under a wide variation of conditions speaks well for its essential soundness.

Exploration activity for diamonds in Canada has recently experienced a dramatic increase. Disclosure of a diamond discovery exhibiting features of a potentially economic deposit contained in a kimberlite pipe in the Lac de Gras area of Canada's Northwest Territories has sparked substantial interest in-Canada and abroad and has triggered the largest staking rush in terms of area in the history of Canadian exploration. In this paper, we report on the nature and extent of current exploration activity in Canada for diamonds (with special attention to Arctic regions), the results of this activity to date, and the context in terms of current world markets for diamonds.
