The Yayoi period, from about 300 B.C. to A.O. 300, represents a time of important changes in Japanese history. During this period the advanced rice culture of the Asian continent was introduced to Japan, along with the techniques of animal husbandry, spinning, bronze casting and metal working(1) . As was the case in the Jomon period (11000 B.C. to 300 B.C.), the Yayoi period is traditionally defined by a particular type of pottery, characterized by the use of the potter's wheel and an extreme simplicity of decoration and form(2) . Pieces of this pottery were found in 1884 in a district of Tokyo, known as Yayoi-Cho, not far from Tokyo University. Within a decade the name Yayoi had come to be used for the period which also saw the first casting of metals in Japan121. During the Yayoi period, the foundation of the ancient Japanese state was laid as the individual small communities were unified and as labour specialization and social levels developed. In fact, the Yayoi may be the true ancestral culture of Japan(3) . However, the origin of the Yayoi is not definitely known. One theory indicates that the Yayoi people may have been driven from the Asian mainland (via Korea) by the dynastic wars that accompanied the unification of China under the Ch'in and Han and that these settlers rapidly displaced the Jomon. Bronze objects and the cultivation of rice may have arrived about the same time - in the third century B.C. Iron was in Japan within another century, but since it rusts badly and disintegrates, only a few small pieces are known from such an early date(4) . After about 50 B.C., the Yayoi cultures of western Japan were in fairly close and regular contact with the continent via Korea(5)

Currently, it is important for companies to have controlled mining operations and adhere to production schedules. To achieve this, one of the key factors is maintaining high reliability in the P&T process, primarily the opening of ore stope, which could be delayed due to any unplanned or uncontrolled problem. These ore stope opening processes, whose main activity is generating free face, are a very important pillar for future mine planning. The possibility of ensuring their opening brings a series of downstream benefits: safety, economics, productivity, and compliance and adherence to plans. The process under discussion consists of developing free faces in a single blasting event. This will help us leverage greater reliability for overall production operation plans, reduce construction times, and open up opportunities for downstream improvements in the production process, considering technical factors in P&T designs. This study presents a developed methodology and shows the results of its implementation in ten (18) single-event free face blasts. The analysis includes cavity geometry, geology, rock qualities, drilling deviations, and the blasting strategy implemented for each event. The methodology used considered material fluffing processes, the actual drilling trajectory, the initiation sequence, QA/QC during explosive loading, monitoring instrumentation (vibrations), and VOD recording, among others. As a result, out of a total of 18 free-face events blasts in a single event, 16 were successful and two achieved 90% efficiency, reducing the stope's production start-up time by 50% compared to current operations. By implementing free face blasting in a single event, there are savings in operating costs, increased productivity of the mining equipment, and improved adherence to production plans. For applications with greater heights of free faces, where blasting cannot be carried out in a single event, we should consider performing them in two stages using wireless detonators already available on the market for mining operations.

INTRODUCTION There are now over twenty years since the radiological characteristics of the brazilian regions of Araxá, Tapira and Barreiros, three locations adjacent to each other, in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, started being surveyed by investigators from the Instituto de Biofísica da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (IB/UFRJ), Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro (PUC/RJ), and New York University (NYU) (Roser and Cullen, 1958; Cullen et al, 1980). The importance of the Araxá apatite – Ca5,(P04)3(OH, F, Cl) - and pyrochlore - NaCaNB206F - for the production of large quantities of fertilizers and niobium was early recognized (Roser and Cullen, 1958). Interesting data have been gathered and published throughout the years on the contents of naturally occurring radionuclides in geologic materials, soils, grass, foods and waters of the Araxá region (Eisenbud, et al., 1964; Penna Franca, et al., 1965a, b; Roser et al., 1966; Penna Franca et al., 1970; Cullen, 1977; Penna Franca, 1977; Cullen and Paschoa, 1978; and Cullen et al., 1980). The radioactivity of the Araxá region is associated with mineral deposits of niobium rich pyrochlore and phosphate rich apatite. There are in this region mineral ores with 3 to 5% pyrochlore with 2 to 2.5% Th as Th02 and 50 to 150 ppm U308 in the matrix, while the apatite deposits contain up to 150 ppm U308 and a thorium concentration similar to that of the pyrochlore deposits (Paschoa and Palacios, 1981). As an indication of the high thorium content of the Araxá soils the 228Ra and 224Ra activity concentrations were reported to range from 10.6±0.2 to 62.4±0.7 pCi228Ra/g soil in 7 samples and 2.1±0.1 to 104±1 pCi224Ra/g soil in 19 samples (Cullen, et al., 1966). The uptake of radium isotopes by edible roots vegatables and fruits growing in the soils of the Araxá region can be illustrated by the data listed in Table I. The biological availability of natural radium isotopes in some segments of the Araxá soil allows a large variation in the 228Ra, 224Ra and 226Ra concentrations in vegetables and edible roots, as can be seen in Table I. This fact makes quite difficult a quantitative local assessment of the radiological implications of mining the Araxá mineral deposits of pyrochlore and apatite for production of niobium and phosphate fertilizers, respectively; since one cannot easily separate the naturally occurring from the technogically enhanced radionuclide contents of foods. The position of the city of Araxá inside the contour of the state of Minas Gerais appears in the upper part of Figure 1, which shows the outlined map of Brazil with the positions of the cities Brasilia and Rio de Janeiro also indicated. The lower part of Figure 1 is a representation of the Araxá region in an expanded scale, which indicates the locations of the pyrochlore and apatite deposits in relation to the city of Araxá, as well as the nearby hydrographic basins. The distance between the city of Araxá and the pyrochlore deposit is about 8 km, and between the pyrochlore and apatite deposits is 4 km. This paper deals tentatively with the radiological implications of the industrial operations taking place in the Araxá region for the exploration of the pyrochlore and apatite deposits. However, one must bear in mind, firstly, that the radiological implications of these industrial activities are by far too complex to be covered adequately by the limited amount of data to be presented in this paper, and secondly, that such implications cannot be considered of local character only. INDUSTRIAL OPERATIONS The commercial exploration of the Araxá deposits of pyrochlore and apatite started only few years ago, motivated by the increasing demand of niobium and phosphate fertilizers in Brazil and the world. As a consequence of the industrial operations in Araxá, a redistribution of the uranium, thorium, and radium originally present in the local deposits of pyrochlore and apatite started occurring in the seventies, with possible radiological implications for the Araxá region and its immediate surroundings, not to mention the destinations of the end products of such industrial operations. A literature review on the radioactivity associated with the extration industries of selected minerals was made by the USEPA (Bliss, 1978). The low level radioactive wastes of the industries for copper ore mining and rare metals processing have been object of particular attention (Fitzgerald, Jr., 1976; Eng, et al., 1979), but the short and long term implications of the radioactivity associated with the niobium industry were also subjects of concern (Knight and Makepeace, 1978). Recently, high 232Th and 226Ra concentrations in samples from the tin mining industry in West Malaysia were reported (Hu et al., 1981). RAPIDLY rising world demand for mineral products has accelerated depletion of the more readily accessible ores, particularly those of premium grade. Operations must proceed at a faster rate to deeper horizons, where there are problems of ground control that restrict economic recovery of the mineral and introduce new hazards to mine personnel. For some of the new Canadian mining fields severe problems of ground stress are still in the future, but much of Canada's mineral output comes from well established mines that have reached considerable depths. It must also be anticipated that the depletion of premium grade ores will eventually necessitate mining low grade material at competitive cost, and unsolved problems of ground control can materially increase costs. Studies of ground stress phenomena in underground workings are therefore considered a present-day necessity, especially since these investigations must be a long-term effort owing to the highly complex nature of the problem and the difficulty of making full-scale observations. In recent years the Mines Branch of the Department of Mines and Technical Surveys in Canada has conducted such an investigation. This report of the work is primarily concerned with stress problems in some Canadian coal mines and, in particular, with mine bumps. Mines Branch investigations of this and related problems are carried out by a small team of mining engineers and physicists who, with assistance from geologists, pool their special skills in an integrated program. These Canadian investigations combine a field and laboratory approach. Since data obtained under contrasting mining conditions allow useful comparisons of ground behavior under stress, this article will present data gathered under a wide range of Canadian coal mining conditions. Two contrasting longwalls in eastern Canada will be discussed and two dissimilar pillar extraction operations in western Canada. Locale of Observations In eastern Canada observations are being made in the collieries at Springhill, Nova Scotia. The district's No. 2 mine, which has a history of bump occurrences dating back to 1917, is currently being worked at a depth of 4200 ft. The mining method is longwall retreating along the strike and the practice is to retreat three walls in line, each about 350 ft long. There is no machine cutting or shooting—the coal is hand-picked and hand-loaded onto face conveyors. There are three rows of hardwood chock block supports parallel to the coal face. These supports are built during the two daily coal loading shifts, and the rear line is withdrawn during the midnight shift. The goaves are partially packed by stone midwalls 12 ft wide which are built forward daily in step with the face advance. The seam dips at 15° and averages 9 ft of strong, well cleated bituminous coal enclosed in competent beds of shales, sandy shales, and sandstones of Carboniferous age. The bumps rarely disturb the retreating longwall faces but manifest themselves as violent upthrusts of pavement in the levels leading to the walls. Restoration of bauxite mining areas constitutes a difficult issue to address due to the destruction of the vegetation and soil decay of the excavated area. In this study woody species growth, in relation to altitude, heavy metal concentrations and mechanical texture of the underlying mining waste, were investigated. The research was implemented on restored sites of a bauxite mine in the Fokida Prefecture of Greece. These sites were located in three different elevations and the restoration took place in two phases, in 2001 and 1996. Heavy metals measurements showed some correlation among the different metals, whereas their concentration was also associated with plant growth parameters.

Landfills containing house hold waste produces methane gas during its decomposition. This gas can be recovered and used for heating purposes or as fuel for vehicles. Gas drainage pipes are installed in the landfill and connected to a central suction point. Methane gas is produced over several years until the slots in the drainage pipes are clogged by black mud. And the bottom of the vertical drainage pipe are filled with mud and water. The hypothesis tested in this paper is if blasting in the drainage pipes could activate the production and flow of methane. In the first part of the paper we have studied what maximum linear charge concentration could be used in different size of PE-pipes place vertical on surface and surrounded by air. The results show that the maximum linear charge concentration for single blasts varied between 5-10 g/m, depending on the diameter of the pipe (90, 100 and 160 mm). Maximum charge concentration for the repeated blast varied between 2-5 g/m. In the second part of the paper we study what maximum linear charge concentration could be used in situ for full scale blasting tests in a special prepared test area which later on was dug out after the blastings. Up to 40 g/m could be used without damaging the top of the 160 mm diameter pipes. The increase in methane flow was so low so it could not be measured c4.5 m3/h. The conclusion therefore is that the stimulation of methane flow by explosives is not enough.

In 1981, K. E. Drexler proposed using massively parallel nanomechanical systems to manufacture large atomically exact structures. As in macroscopic mechanical systems, they would contain components that serve traditional functions such as trusses for support, gears to transmit power, bearings for low-friction support of rotating surfaces, motors to supply torque, pipes and conveyor belts for material transport, and channels for coolant. Many of these components would only contain a few thousand atoms. Specific designs for these devices became available in the early 1990s, and a few working devices appeared in laboratories by the early 2000s. As advances continue, a thorough understanding of the operative transport phenomena will guide the intelligent design and construction of nanomechanical structures, devices, and systems. The familiar equations of continuum mechanics are generally inadequate to describe the flow of heat and mass in the proposed nanosystems. Boundary conditions often need to be described in terms of potential surfaces. Surfaces are not geometrically smooth, but periodic according to the locations of atomic nuclei. Friction occurs not due to the plastic deformation of asperities on mating surfaces, but to phenomena such as thermoelastic damping and phonon viscosity when atoms slide past each other. Electrostatic forces dominate over gravitational forces by orders of magnitude; there is no role here for natural convection. Structural components, no matter how stiff and strong, are in constant motion due to the thermal noise in the system. The fluids are described in terms of individual molecules in constant motion.

This study confines itself to an examination of the two million square miles of the northern hemisphere which the geographer defines as the terrestrial Arctic, a land region in which the mean temperature of the warmest month is below 50°F-in effect, the area lying north of the tree line. The engineering and human problems there are of a different order of magnitude than is generally true of the sub-Arctic. Whether in Dawson Creek or Matanuska, in Mo i Rana or Skelleftea such problems are of the same general order as in Hibbing or Noranda. The same is not true in Kong Oscar's Fjord or Lancaster Sound.

Coal mining in the State of Washington offers many interesting problems for the mining engineer, due to the varied physical conditions occurring in different fields, and often in the same mine. The different coal seams worked in the same mine commonly require different mining and transportation methods for economical operation. The coal measures have inclinations ranging from 5' to vertical, and in the same mine the dip of the coal may vary from 30' to 50 . In all fields, the seams are extensively faulted, folded, and sheared. The quality of the coal produced ranges from brown lignite to bituminous coking coal, the following being typical analyses: Very little of the coal contains as much as 0.75 per cent. sulfur. The brown lignites occur mostly in Lewis and Thurston Counties, and as a rule are very cheaply mined. This coal has been successfully used in locomotives of the Oregon & Washington Railroad, after equipping them with specially designed fireboxes. The sub-bituminous coals occur in all the coal-mining counties. Their cost of production varies widely, according to the character of the formations, the pitch, and the wall conditions. This makes a fairly good steam coal, but the lump is used mostly for domestic trade, after grading into lump, nut, and pea. The coking coal is used for making coke, and for locomotive and other boiler fuel. It yields a strong metallurgical coke, quite high in ash, though seldom exceeding 18 per cent. ash. The selectivity of polymer adsorption in mixed mineral systems is the basis for polymer depression of gangue minerals in flotation. Effective polymer depressants not only reduce gangue mineral recovery, they also have minimal effect on the recovery of the value phase, presumably through targeted adsorption on the gangue phase, and minimal uptake on the value phase. Traditionally, polymer depressant design has been guided by single mineral phase adsorption tests, with affinity and maximum adsorbed amount determined for gangue and value phases separately. However, there is a need to determine the actual extent of adsorption on the gangue phase while in the presence of the value phase. In this work, we report on the development of in situ atomic force microscopy (AFM) imaging for determination of polymer depressant coverage and morphology on mixed mineral surfaces. Our group has previously used AFM imaging on single minerals to connect adsorbed layer characteristics with bubble-particle attachment and flotation outcomes. Two sample types were used to test the methodology: (i) a mixture of two crushed/ground minerals encased in resin; and (ii) a composite mineral sample containing macroscopic regions of three different mineral phases. The samples have been used to probe the selective uptake of two modified dextrin polymers (octenyl succinate anhydride dextrin). AFM images acquired in situ (while all surfaces are immersed in the same polymer solution) of each mineral phase have revealed the natural selectivity of the polymer for the mineral surfaces. In all cases, the polymers adsorb on the all mineral surfaces present, but to a varying extent.

INTRODUCTION Controlled blasting is used at some time during most civil engineering projects where there is rock excavation. Controlled blasting is often necessary because the blasting must take place in the near proximity of adjacent structures. In other instances, the blasting is controlled because a smooth perimeter is desired to minimize rock support and overbreak. The construction of tunnels and shafts for subways, rock excavations for foundations and the excavation of road cuts for interstate highways, sometimes require blasting operations which must be conducted in an urban environment. Unfortunately, blasting operations produce unwanted sounds and vibration along with their beneficial effects. Thus, in the writing of specifications for blasting in an urban environment, potential damage to adjacent structures by ground vibrations must be considered, possible damage to windows from airblasts must be considered, potential damage from fly rock must be considered, and the discomfort to people from ground vibrations, airblast, and noise must be taken into account. The contractor or the owner's engineer is faced with determining the maximum weight of explosives which may be detonated without damage to structures on adjacent property. If the weight of explosive is overestimated, the resulting damage to adjacent structures may result in costly losses. But, if the engineer or contractor is too conservative, and the weight of explosive becomes too restrictive, progress of the project may be curtailed and the cost of excavation will increase accordingly. GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS The design of a mine or any underground opening in rock is similar to the design of any other structure, such as a building or a bridge, in one important way. This similarity lies in the fact that the stability of the structure is a function of the loads that will be applied during the structure's expected lifetime. In the case of an underground opening, the applied load is the product of the existing in situ stress field and the concentration of this field that is produced by the extraction of a load¬bearing material. Thus, a knowledge of the in situ stress field is considered a basic requirement in the design process and essential to the eventual stability of the underground structure (Duvall, 1976; Obert, 1972; Merrill and Peterson, 1961; Dahl and von Schonfeldt, 1976; Hedley and Wilson, 1975). The in situ stress field can be used along with the physical properties of the rock masses involved, the ge¬ometry of the various rock types, the geometry of the openings involved, and a failure criterion to evaluate structural stability of a planned mine by theoretical or numerical techniques. This same information can be used to investigate ground control problems in existing mines. In situ rock stress determinations can be separated into three categories: the determination of applied stress, also called the absolute or field stress; the deter¬mination of concentrations of the field stress near open¬ ings; and the determination of changes in rock stress as load-bearing material is removed. The applied stress field is more difficult to determine than are stress changes. Various instruments and techniques have been developed to determine applied rock stress and stress changes in rock. ABSOLUTE OR FIELD STRESSES Theoretical Considerations In the absence of actual measurements, it is often assumed that at any point, the vertical stress is equal to the weight of the overlying material. [ ] where S„ is vertical stress, S is average weight density of overburden rock, and h is depth from the surface. This is normally consistent with actual experience. The horizontal stresses are assumed to be equal and related to the vertical stress through the Poisson effect. [] where Sh is horizontal stress, S„ is vertical stress, and v is Poisson's ratio. The derivation of Eq. 2 is dependent on lateral con¬finement of the rock mass. An increasing amount of information is rapidly becoming available which indi¬cates that the in situ stress field at a particular location cannot simply be assumed to be a gravity-induced stress distribution in which the secondary principal stresses in the horizontal plane are due to confinement and Pois¬son's effect. Rather they can be a complex function of gravity loading, regional stresses, structural features, ex¬cavation geometries, and variations in surface and/or possibly basement rock topography. Furthermore, the underground principal stress dis¬tribution is not necessarily vertical and horizontal as is often assumed. The deviation of the three-dimensional stress distribution from vertical and horizontal can be due to a combination of both topographic (Hooker, Bickel, and Aggson, 1972) and structural features.

C. H. Samans and W. R. Ham (Chicago, Ill., and Dix-field, Maine, respectively)-—For several years we have been studying transitions of this basic type in metals, alloys, glasses, etc. Usually, however, they are not so clearly marked as those which the authors have found, and hence are much more difficult to determine accurately. Since our studies indicate that most of them occur virtually unchanged (as far as temperature is concerned) regardless of the form in which the element appears, we believe that they are a characteristic of the atom. Specifically, we believe that there is an additional rotational degree of freedom possessed by the nucleus which has not been considered heretofore. This nuclear rotation is made up of several components, each related to the several quantum shells of electrons. In chromium there are four of these shells and hence four separate series of characteristic transition temperatures. The lowest temperature at which any transition occurs, based on the present state of our computations, is 125°K, 4° higher than the authors' value of 121°K. A convergence of this series, we believe, shows up at the higher temperature of 2085 °K, surprisingly close to the transformation temperature of 2103°K recently announced by N. J. Grant of M.I.T. for a body-centered to face-centered transformation in chromium. Likewise, our computations indicate a temperature of 311°K for the second transition temperature, reported by the authors as 310 °K. A convergence of this series, we believe, shows up at a higher temperature as the melting point at 2163°K. Although our work on these series must, in a sense, still be regarded as empirical, since we do not understand fully as yet just what the series mean, it is based on a reasonably firm picture. The individual constants, from which the various series are computed for each element, comes directly from the X-ray K absorption limit. Furthermore, the same basic method has accounted for transformation and melting temperatures in about 50 of the chemical elements, which is all we have tried thus far. In many cases the only known transformation is the melting point, but in others the occurrence of transformations or other transitions, equally as well marked as those of the authors, has been pointed out by others. These observations have assisted us greatly. Consequently we were very pleased to see the authors' excellent work in finding these two transitions in chromium. With these confirming data, our picture of this element is clarified considerably, so we expect that at least some of our work can be published in the near future. R. C. Ruder (E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Cu., Wilmington, Del.)—The authors' interpretation of these transitions in terms of 3d to 4s electronic structure transitions is most interesting. It would be interesting to have additional experimental evidence of such transitions from the temperature dependence of the Hall coefficient in the neighborhood of the property changes discussed in this paper. Simple theory15 suggests the Hall coefficient as a measure of the free electron (or s electron) concentration per unit volume. It has been shown that for paramagnetic'" and ferromagnetic1? metals the simple theory is in fact too simple. However, the existence of a discontinuity in the Hall coefficient would provide information which should aid both in our understanding of these transitions and the significance of the Hall coefficient in these metals. It was rather surprising that no significant paramagnetic effects were observed. In this connection the recent work of McGuire and Kriessman18 is cited. They measured the magnetic susceptibility of chromium from 20" to 1460 °C. They also observed no large change in the susceptibility although there might be a change in slope in the vicinity of the 40 °C transition. The existence of these 3d to 4s electronic transitions has been discussed in connection with the paramagnetic susceptibility behavior of nickel and nickel alloys.'"-" Assuming a correspondence principle between classical and quantum mechanical paramagnetic theory and using classical theory to calculate the effective Bohr magneton number from the Curie constant for substances obeying the Curie-Weiss law," it is found that the effective magneton number is a function of temperature. The process of calculation involves the inverse of the differential of the 1/x4 vs. temperature curve so that good and numerous data are necessary to obtain significant results. The data of Fallot23 show a discontinuous increase of about 12 pct in the effective magneton number between 850" and 900 oC, followed by a continuous increase up to the melting point. The data of Sucksmith and Pearce24 show a possible 8 pct increase. The older data of Terry25 and Weiss and Foex26 show a continuous increase. It is possible that small amounts of impurity atoms change these electronic transitions significantly. Fallot's23 data on a nickel alloy with 4.5 atomic pct Fe indicate that the discontinuity occurs around 1300 °C. Systematic investigation of the transition metals for transitions of this nature should provide information which would be very valuable for our understanding of these metals. The absence of antiferromagnetic structures in chromium has been shown by Shull27 using neutron diffraction techniques. M. E. Fine, E. S. Greiner, and W. C. Ellis (authors' reply)—The remarks by Drs. Samans and Ham are certainly very interesting, in particular those pertaining to the close agreement between the theoretically calculated values for transition temperatures in chromium and the experimental values reported by a number of investigators. This is a remarkable achievement and we shall look forward to a more detailed presentation of the method followed in their calculations. We do not believe that the transition in pure chromium near 40 °C remains temperature invariant with alloying, as was reported by Samans and Ham for a number of the substances that they studied. We have not done any work with alloys but base our belief on the results of earlier studies in which less pure chromium was included and considerably lower transition temperatures were observed. THE United Verde mine is in the north central part of Arizona, on the. north-easterly slope of the Black Hills, near the town of Jerome. Ore was first discovered in the district about 1875, and the first mining claims were located by M. A. Ruffner and associates in 1877. In 1888 the late Senator William A. Clark secured control of the property and under his ownership it developed into one of the country's most important copper producers. The property was sold to the Phelps Dodge Corporation in 1935, and since then has been under this Corporation's management. Except for shutdowns caused by general world-market conditions, production has been continuous from 189o to date. GEOLOGY The mineralized zone ranges in area from approximately 12 acres to less than 5 acres. All mineralization occurs in the pre-Cambrian intrusives. The first intrusion, according to geologic records, was the quartz porphyry, which later was intruded by augite diorite. Following the diorite intrusion through a series of intrusions of lesser magnitude, a pipelike mass of massive sulphide, quartz and rock was formed. The diorite forms the hanging wall of this mass, and the porphyry the footwall. Between the footwall and the sulphide a band of chlorite schist was formed, probably owing to metamorphic conditions. Commercial ore occurs along the contact of the schist and sulphide extending into the sulphide, sometimes entirely through the schist, and fingering out into the porphyry. The ore deposit was formed by replacement similar to deposits formed in limestone areas. Faulting and deformation occurred in pre-Cambrian times and again in the Tertiary period, removing approximately 2000 ft. from the top of the main United Verde ore body, forming the United Verde Extension ore body, the only other major ore body in the district. Major development work has shown that the sulphide mass extends to the 3300-ft. level, and diamond drilling below this level has indicated that the mass might extend below the 3700-ft. level, but in a diminished quantity. While many copper minerals exist in the mine, the chief commercial mineral is chalcopyrite. A plan and vertical section of the mineralized zone showing the principal geological features is shown in Figs. I and 2. GENERAL DESCRIPTION AND PHYSICAL CONDITION OF MINE After over 50 years of active production, ore still exists on almost every level of the mine. This condition is due to many causes -mine fires, which broke out as early as 1894, caused the abandonment of certain areas; subsidence and ground movements retarded the cleaning up of others. Furthermore, in the early days there was such an abundance of ore that when mining became difficult it was a simple matter to replace the production by going to a deeper level. Coal is, however, the one basic mineral upon which our whole way of life depends and it may be well if attention is drawn to this fact by an occasional statistical review of the coal position in Canada. The recent furore over the oil and gas discoveries has so obscured the basic position of coal in many minds that a little basic coal information may be useful. WHEN plants decay in a peat bog the woody parts form a brown pasty mass, or peat muck, largely soluble in. alkalis. This brown matter has been termed "ulmin." The same material, but commonly black in color, is found in coal, and there is evidence of the similarity between the material forming the main bulk of the coal and the bulk of the more recently decayed material in peat bogs. The. more recent or low-rank coals, such as lignite, little removed from the peat stage, contain notable percentages of alkali-soluble ulmins, but the percentage decreases with increased, degree of coalification and is negligible in bituminous or higher rank coals. The determination of the alkali-soluble ulmins in any coal gives, therefore, an indication, of its degree of coalification or rank. Coals which contain few or no ulmins soluble in alkalis do contain ulmins which can be rendered soluble by oxidation. The higher the rank of the coal, the more difficult it is to oxidize the insoluble ulmins and make them soluble. High-rank coals can be differentiated by oxidation tests on the, insoluble ulmins; but low-rank coals can be characterized by both their soluble and insoluble ulmins. This paper deals with the determination and significance of the alkali-soluble ulmins, present, as such in- the coal. The chemical nature and composition of ulmins are not discussed.

A chemical method of determining microgram quantities of arsenic in coal was investigated by the Bureau of Mines to supplement a semiquantitative spectrographic method of determining arsenic in coal ash. In accordance with a method recommended by the International Organization for Standardization, 1-gram samples of coal are decomposed by wet oxidation with boiling sulfuric acid (H2S04) and nitric acid (HN03) to remove the organic matter. After heating to fumes of SO3 to remove HN03, the arsenic is separated as arsine by the action of zinc in H2S04 solution. The arsine is absorbed in dilute iodine solution in which the arsenic is determined colorimetrically by the molybdenum-blue reaction. Two modifications of the method for obtaining the arsenic in solution, in addition to the wet oxidation method, give satisfactory results. The modifications are (1) furnace ashing with MgO added to the coal, followed by treatment with H2S04, and (2) extraction of arsenic from the coal by dilute HNO3 without ashing. Float-and sink-tests show that arsenic is associated mainly with mineral matter in the three coals examined. High-temperature ashing tests show that very little arsenic is volatilized from coal ash below 1,000° C, but it is virtually all removed from the ash at 1,300° C.

Gold-bearing polymetallic sulfide deposits are common in Serbia, and mostly occur in the Karpato-Balkan and, to a lesser extent, the Serbo-Macedonian metallogenic province. These deposits û Coka Marin (Majdanpek), Grabova Reka (Blagojev Kamen), Lece (Medvedja) and Veliki Cip (Boranja) û are dominated by Cu and/or Pb-Zn mineralisation that contains a variety of Pb, Zn, Cu and Fe (¦ Sb, As, Bi) sulfides and sulfosalts, as well as native elements. Gangue minerals are composed of quartz, carbonates and rare silicates and barite. Based on their gold content these deposits can be divided in three groups:1. Polymetallic deposits with a high gold content (>1 g/t).2. Polymetallic deposits with an intermediate gold content (0.1 to 1 g/t), and3. Polymetallic deposits with a low gold content (<0.1 g/t). Gold occurs as native gold or as an alloy with silver. Native gold ranges in size from 5 to 20 ¦m, with a few rare grains over 100 ¦m, as isolated grains or as microveins (in the first group of deposits). Its distribution within the deposit in uneven. Native gold in the second group is smaller in size (1 - 5 ¦m, rarely 20 ¦m), where it is uniformly distributed in a quartz-silicate matrix. The third group is of no economical importance. The subject of research has been the first group of polymetallic deposits.

Pyritic smelting, so-called, as practiced in the Black Hills is pyritic smelting only in the sense that Dr. John Percy uses the expression in his " Metallurgy of Silver," where he describes a process for smelting dry silver-ores in connection with iron pyrites, to form a regulus. The ores treated by this process in the Black Hills are very siliceous, averaging about 74 per cent. of silica, from 10 to 20 of iron oxide, 4 or 5 of alumina, and from 2 to 4 of lime. In 1889, while Dean of the South Dakota School of Mines, I took up the question of their smelting. There were neither copper- nor lead-ores in the Hills; hence pyrite and pyrrhotite, of which there are large deposits, were employed to form a regulus. This mixture of pyrite and pyrrhotite, besides being absolutely barren of gold and silver, carried an average of 30 per cent. of silica. The only basic material available as a flux for the great excess of silica in the ores and in the pyrite was a dolomitic limestone. Moreover, the local coke gave 24 per cent. of ash, 60 per cent. of which was silica—as unpromising a set of conditions as can well be imagined. We had before us the examples of Mr. W. Lawrence Austin, of this Institute, who had experimented at Toston, Montana,"

The role of copper sulphate in the flotation of pyrite has been studied. A survey of a number of pyrite flotation plants using copper sulphate showed that in correct dosages, it was able to increase both grades and recoveries. This was confirmed in batch tests. Copper sulphate had no significant effect on the rate of adsorption of PNBX onto pyrite. Copper adsorbed irreversibly onto the pyrite when the latter was slurried in a copper sulphate solution. Copper sulphate had a significant effect on the maximum froth height obtained in static three-phase froth tests. Proposals to explain these observations are made.
