"Aerosol processing of materials such as (i) gas-to-particle conversion process (e.g., Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) method) and (ii) liquid (or droplet)-to-particle conversion process (e.g., spray pyrolysis) has become of major interest to produce novel submicron- or nanometer-sized particulate material used in electronic and chemical industries. After reviewing recent theoretical and experimental researches on the evaluation of properties and morphology of fine particles by the CVD and spray pyrolysis methods, the importance of the process engineering approach· for aerosol processing of materials and the use of advanced aerosol measurement technology have been pointed out.IntroductionMaterial synthesis via aerosol processing offers a route to producing nanometer-sized and submicrometer-sized particles of high purity with specifically tailored chemical and physical properties. Especially, single nanometer-sized particles (nanoparticle materials) are considered to play an important role in the synthesis of nanostructured materials as well as in nanotechnology in 21st century due to their quantum effect and so on.However, the transformation of gaseous or liquid precursors to the final functional particulate matters consists of various complex chemical and physical processes. In order to control the size distribution and morphology of produced particles, it is important to analyze and model various phenomena, such as gas-phase or liquid-phase chemical reaction, nucleation, condensation, agglomeration and sintering that occur simultaneously in aerosol material processing. By introducing the Aerosol Science and Materials Science, the authors have been trying to model the changes in particle properties and morphology by gas-to-particle conversion and droplet-to-particle conversion processes. The authors have also been trying to obtain the experimental data on the particles properties as accurate as possible."

THE leading antimony mineral is stibnite. In smelting stibnite ore two processes are available, precipitation and roasting-reduction. The former is suited only for high-grade ores. As low-grade ores are more common than high-grade, roasting-reduction is of greater importance than precipitation. In the roasting process the aim may be to leave the oxidized antimony in the ore, or it may be to volatilize as much of the antimony as possible, collect the volatilized oxide as a rich intermediary product and smelt it for antimony, leaving the gangue poor enough to be considered a waste product. Whichever way the roast is conducted certain difficulties inherent in stibnite are encountered. These are: 1. The low melting point of stibnite which; according to Pelabon,1 is 550°C., according to Wagemann2 540°C., and according to Borgström3 546°C. 2. The ignition temperature: According to Friedrich,4 stibnite, if heated in air, begins to oxidize at 290°C. if the size of a grain is 0.1 mm. in diameter; at 343°, if 0.1 to 0.2 mm.; and 430° if 0.2 mm. 3. The fusibility of a mixture of Sb2S3 and Sb203 which in the form of kermesite (Sb2S3)2.Sb203 melts at 517°C.5 4. The volatility of Sb2S3 and Sb203, for which no numerical data appear to exist, although practical experience has shown that they are volatile at low temperatures.

"With reference to the chemical constraints underlying the ion exchange process for uranium recovery, a generalized view is presented on the actual and the achievable efficiency of the process. The area considered is restricted to acid leach circuits in combination with nitrate, chloride or sulphuric acid elution.A comparison between actual plant results and the chemical requirements shows that:(a) Unless new and better ion exchange resins are developed, no dramatic change in equipment size and resin inventory is""anticipated. (b) Elution efficiency, especially for sulphuric acid, may be improved considerably. More concentrated eluates may beproduced at lower chemical consumption. A possibility of achieving additional purification solely by ion exchange is discussed.IntroductionThis paper presents a generalized view of the actual and the achievable efficiency of the ion exchange processes for urannium recovery. Therefore, a generalized approach of the ion exchange process inevitably neglects some parameters which maylead to significant variations in apparently identical situations.The uranium concentration in the pregnant solution, together with its pH, are the principal variables which determine resin loading and residence rime in the ion exchange system. On the elution side, the type of eluant and its concentration will determine the contact time required and the amount of eluant needed to strip the resin. The temperature, the properties of the ion exchange resin, the total dissolved solids in the feed solution and the competing ions are other variables that affect the chemical performance; these, however, may be considered as a correction of the principal parameters if one is interested only in general trends."

The discovery of NdFeB permanent magnets helps to perform technologies with reduced weight and gives them access to miniaturization. The industrial process of production of the Nd-Fe alloy by electrolysis used to manufacture NdFeB magnets consists in reducing Nd3+ ions dissolved in molten fluoride salts. The electrochemical behavior of neodymium is studied in LiCl-KCl and LiCl molten salt systems, examining reduction mechanisms, potential deposition, and faradaic yields.

This document reports the results of a two-year research effort aimed at improving communication systems used in coal mines. This work was conducted under a program whose original goal not only involved the development of practical and effective electronic systems for operational communications, but also for monitoring, at a central location, remote instruments at key positions in a mine. About half way through the originally proposed three year effort, the program was redirected to phase out the communication effort at the end of two years and to concentrate the program" resources on the investigation of new monitoring system concepts developed by this research. Thus, the work reported here is incomplete relative to the originally pro- posed program. However, the work was carried to the point of providing sufficient evidence to aid in the comparison of certain new communication concepts. For the concepts chosen for this study, the work was stopped short of hardware development and field testing, Several reports in the form of Master's theses and a Doctoral Dissertation have resulted from this research. They each report in considerable detail the results of several individual" contributions to this program. In preparing this report, an attempt has been made to provide a complete description of the significant results but with- out burdening the reader with the minute details. These more detailed reports are referenced heavily for the convenience of those interested. PRESENT COMMUNICATION METHODS Two types of communication systems are presently used In coal mines. They are: 1, Various forms of telephone systems, and 2. Carrier current radio systems using the trolley line as the interconnection circuit. Carrier current radio is used almost exclusively for control of rail trafflc by the dispatcher. Almost all other communication uses the telephone system, Telephone lines generally extend to areas where trolley lines are not present such as the outside offices and warehouse. Therefore the telephone system provides the primary means of voice communication. Telephones - Telephone systems employed in American coal mines fall into three categories. 1. Paging type telephone systems - these systems have individual stations which use battery powered transistor audio amplifiers to boost signal levels for normal communication. When in the page mode,

Pachuca tanks are commonly used in the hydrometallurgical industry to carry out leaching operations. The fluidynamic characteristics of the liquid phase, resulting from the injection of gas into the draft tube, are important to achieve the complete suspension of the mineral particles and has a decisive influence in the mass transfer processes occurring in this reactor. This study investigated the effect of different design and operating characteristics on the liquid velocity field. using a laboratory-scale Pachuca tank. The transparent model was filled with water, and air was injected through the bottom in the absence of mineral particles. The liquid velocities over the whole reactor were measured under several experimental conditions using particle image velocimetry (PIV). This technique allowed to obtain a very detailed picture of the liquid motion even in the draft tube, as long as bubbles were absent from the measured field of view. The experiments have shown that the liquid velocities increase with increasing the draft tube to tank diameters ratio, the distance from the conical bottom to the draft tube entrance, or the gas superficial velocity. On the other hand, an increase in the water level with respect to the draft tube outlet caused a decrease. A mathematical model, which used the no-slip model, to calculate the variation of axial effective density along the two-phase region, was found to predict liquid velocity fields which agree very satisfactory with the experimental results obtained under all the conditions studied.

"The Precambrian rocks of southeastern Manitoba contain a great variety of mineral deposits, including gold, chromium, copper, nickel, lithium, tin, beryllium, tungsten, and molybdenum. Although considerable interest has been shown from time to time in each of these types of deposit, production to date has been almost entirely in gold. This has had a value of about $26,000,000 and has been derived chiefly from the San Antonio mine, with lesser amounts from the Central Manitoba, Gunnar, Beresford Lake, Ogama-Rockland, Diana, and other properties.Most of the deposits lie within volcanic and sedimentary rocks or within basic intrusions cutting these rocks. These favourable rocks occur in several areas, which have been given local names and are separated from one another by large bodies of granite (Fig. 1).In general, the several areas are characterized by different types of mineralization. Thus, the Rice Lake-Beresford Lake area contains numerous gold deposits and has yielded almost all the gold production to date; the Maskwa River, Euclid Lake, and Oiseau River areas are, on the whole, characterized by deposits of chromium, copper, nickel, lithium, tin, and beryllium; and in the West Hawk Lake area there are deposits of gold, tungsten, molybdenum, and lithium.As might be expected in a district containing such a variety of mineral deposits, the structural conditions controlling their deposition also vary greatly. It is, accordingly, convenient to discuss the structural geology and mineral deposits of each of the more important areas separately."

THIS subject is one that has attracted my attention for a good many years. All of us have had occa-sion to think of the waste that comes from the poor organization of our methods of finding mines and of looking after prospects. Probably all of us, in, examination work, have made a long and difficult journey to see some prospect, in a far country, or often in the mountains, have found the prospect one that never could be developed, and have learned for the first time that it had been previously examined by from two to six of our professional associates, who, each in turn, condemned the property as worthless. I know properties, as all of you do, that have been repeatedly examined by first-class engineers. Perhaps it would not be safe or wise to have an invariable rule that, each prospect should be entitled to only one examination by one engineer; and yet, it seems to me that somewhere there is a middle ground to take; it is hardly necessary that each little prospect should be examined so many times that the walls get greasy from the climbing of mining engineers, or the stopes get filled up with cigarette stumps. 'This mining engineering profession ought to have brains enough to find some way of making this unnecessary, and of making the benefit of an examination, in some cases at least, and in a much larger number of cases than at present, avail-able to the industry as a whole. If we would save the amount of money that is spent unnecessarily on reexamination of properties, and let that money flow into the actual development of )properties, I believe that, in the long run, we would be better off. Just how to do that is another problem. In 1916, while in London, Edgar Rickard and I attempted to do something of that kind. We started to organize a plan whereby mining engineers might, with the consent of their class, turn over to a central organization their reports on properties they had examined, whereby men who had occasion to look up these same properties might, on payment of a fee (which should go back to the original client, if you desire, or might be devoted to some other purpose for the benefit of the industry), have access to these earlier reports. We found, in the short time we considered this matter, that a good many British engineers, and a good many of the companies, were willing to consider this. In other words, they were willing to pool their information, as a matter of practical experience. We all know the enormous value of pooling information. I think it is a problem that may well be considered from the point of view of the industry as a whole, which the Society might attempt' to work out on a businesslike basis. Assuming, however, that it is possible to work out a plan whereby we get the minimum number of examina-tions that are necessary and we make some saving in money, we reach another stage-the problem of the examination itself.

Explosives are used in the entertainment industry in a wide variety of applications. Live performances such as automobile races, air shows and the like have incorporated the use of explosives into their programs. Even art work has been created employing explosive materials and techniques. The primary entertainment use of explosives, however, remains in motion pictures, television, theater and related fields where it comes under the auspices of special effects. Much of it falls roughly into the category of demolition, though the object being demolished may range from a cigarette in a person's mouth or clothing worn by actors to large objects such as automobiles, aircraft, or boats. This paper will attempt to provide an overview of the materials and methods by which these special effects are created as well as highlight the unique problems encountered in this field and their often equally unique solutions.

The objective of this paper is to present a practical method for calculating minimum safety factors of rock slopes with a horizontal layer of weak material. It is demonstrated that the most critical failure surface, in this case, is a bilinear surface composed of a horizontal failure surface inside the weak layer and an inclined surface inside the rock. The model presented in this paper shows that with a good approximation, the change in slope for the bilinear failure surface may occur directly below the slope crest. This assumption simplifies the calculation of safety factors considerably, because the most critical failure surface is located directly, and the trial computations for a number of failure surfaces are not necessary. Special parameters involved in slope stability analyses of highwalls in open-pit mines are discussed and, by an example calculation, the applicability of this method is demonstrated.

That the domestic consumption of gasoline displays a marked seasonal variation, with a low in the winter and a high in the summer, is well known. It is logical to expect that the nature of the variation has itself been undergoing a change as a result of improvement in roads, general employment of closed cars, and growth of mass haulage; but so far as I am aware the change in seasonal variation has never been investigated and measured. It is the purpose of this paper to present the method and results of such an investigation, undertaken as a contribution to the technique of planning operating schedules now so prominent in connection with the functioning of the industry under a Federal quota system. Long-Chained aliphatic amine salts have been used for the separation of sylvite (KC1) from halite (NaC1) by flotation. It is puzzling how these two minerals, which are so similar chemically and crystallographically, can be separated by this method. Gaudin as postulated that the difference in floatability of halite and sylvite with salts of primary amines depends on ionic size: In the case of amine flotation, the cation would attach itself to the chloride. I have a speculation there, which I cannot prove, that the ammonium group, that is the –NH3 group in the amine, floats potassium chloride because the dimensions of this group as it has been measured in other compounds is almost identically the dimensions of the potassium ion, quite different from the sodium ion, and so it fits where potassium had been, in place of it and not attached to it.

Large scale open pit mining at Ok Tedi and Misima are described in this paper. The paper also presents the socio-political problems encountered in the construction, operation and waste disposal of high technology, high output gold and copper mines in very remote and rugged terrains. Despite these handicaps, mining companies from all over the world have established top class mining facilities including huge open pits, underground mines and mineral processing plants to extract rich mineral deposits of gold, silver and copper.Papua New Guinea is the sixth largest gold and copper producer in the world. New projects likely to come on stream before the end of this century would make it the world's third largest gold producer. The mining industry is the largest organised industry in the country employing over 10 000 persons and investing over US $1000 million on these mega projects per year.

More than 3 trillion gal of water are used annually by the mineral industry. Of this, approximately 21/2 trillion gal are recirculated, the rest constituting intake water. The major users are natural gas processing plants and phosphate rock, sand and gravel, and iron ore producers. Water was used by the mineral industry for mining (6%), processing (64%), cooling and condensing (27%), and miscellaneous uses such as boiler feed and sanitary purposes (3%). Whereas total water use is dependent on the quantity of material processed and on the particular process requirements of an industry, recirculation is dependent on processing, as well as cooling and condensing requirements, quality of new water intake, and the necessity for treating new and discharged water. Consumed water, on the other hand, is dependent on the quantity of water recirculated, and temperature and humidity in the area. Based on this analysis, an increase in water use by the mineral industry of 21/2 times by 1985 is forecast. Wster intake, however, will only rise 62%, because of a substantial increase in recirculation. In one report of a special series concerning the water resources of the United States, the Senate Select Committee on National Water Resources, 87th Congress, estimated that water demand would double by 1980 and triple by 2000.' In view of the possible water deficiencies that might result from such expanded usage and the need for research guidance, the Bureau of Mines organized and carried out a statistical canvass of water use in the mineral industry for calendar year 1962. The data used in this paper, unless otherwise noted, are derived from that canvass.' The efforts in this paper are devoted toward summarization of the canvass and analysis of the data. SOME DEFINITIONS Intake: Water introduced from an external source for the first time into a given mine or plant regardless of quality. Intake water is also called new water, water withdrawn, or makeup water. Fresh Water: Water suitable for cooking and drinking. Saline Water: Water containing more than 1000 parts per million of dissolved solids. Contaminated Water: Water not suitable for domestic use, but excluding saline water. Recirculated Water: Water reused to conserve intake water. Solutions that are recycled primarily because of fixed metallurgical practices, such as copper leaching solutions containing sulfuric acid, are excluded. Gross Water Used: Recirculated water plus intake water. Also called total water used. Consumed Water: Water that is lost by evaporation, as well as water lost in product. Seepage and transferred water are not considered consumed. The use of either intake or recirculated water may result in consumption. However, because of difficulties in measuring consulmption, consumed water is defined as the residual between intake and water discharged from the mine or plant. Mineral Industry: For the purposes of this paper, mineral industry includes all metal and nonmetal surface and underground mines and their associated processing plants, as well as custom mills, coal washing plants and associated mines, petroleum and natural gas well drillers, natural gas processing plants, and secondary recovery operations. WATER USE IN THE MINERAL INDUSTRY Water used by the mineral industry constitutes a relatively minor fraction of the water withdrawn by all users. Data compiled by the U.S. Geological Survey in 1960 indicate that water withdrawals, exclusive of that used to generate hydropower, approximate 99 trillion gal annually.3 Our data indicate that water withdrawals by the mineral industry comprise only 1% of this total, or 2% of the water withdrawn by industrial users. Use by Industry: Water used by various mineral industries is shown in Table I. The table indicates that close to one-half of the gross water used by the mineral industry in 1962 was used by natural gas processing plants, followed by sand and gravel, phosphate rock, and iron ore producers. The largest aggregate users of water are also the largest users per dollar of product. Two striking events marked the year 1871-the establishment of the A.I.M.E. and the beginning of the portland cement industry, the most spectacular of all the nonmetallics in its development. Just as David Saylor's first portland cement, made in a little mill at Allentown, Pa., in that year was the forerunner of a mighty industry, the products of which in 1942 were made in 155 plants scattered throughout the country (having attained a value of nearly $300,000,000), so the Institute from its small beginning has attained a membership of many thousands, likewise decentralized into a series of individual sections of wide geographical distribution. Concurrent with the establishment of the Institute was also the invention of the steam drill, followed by the compressed-air drill about 1904. These mechanical drills were so immeasurably in advance of the hand drill and hammer used previously that quarrying and mining of present-day magnitude could never have been attained without them. Some outstanding occurrences have marked this eventful three quarters of a century. The concrete age, with its enormous demands for cement, aggregates and steel, is of primary importance. In the stretch-bend or bending-under-tension test, a strip is rigidly clamped and restrained at each end and bent by central transverse loading using a radiused punch: The strip deflection at failure has been used as a measure of formability for high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steels by other investigators. In this work, a detailed study is made of strains developing during stretch bending of an 80,000-lbf/ in 2 (552 MPa) yield stress steel using different punch radii. It is shown that toward the end of the process, the bending strains at both the inner and outer surfaces are tensile and suddenly increase at a rapid and approximately equal rate. The strain ratio in the failure region departs significantly from plane strain , even using a large width-to-thickness ratio of about 10. The effective fracture strains appear to be independent of bend ratio (punch radius/thickness) and significantly below the fracture s train in simple tension. Metallographic and tensile data were obtained for the subject material and, for one bend ratio, the effects on stretch-bend parameters of annealing both on this material and a. carbon steel were compared.

Rock mass classification systems are core elements of tunneling and empirical mine design worldwide. The Bauxite division of S&B Industrial Minerals S.A. decided to implement a rock mass classification system in order to provide mining engineers and supervisors of the underground mines, with guidelines of stability performance and with a complementary tool for the selection of the appropriate tunnel support. The back analysis system employed is based on visual observation of especially selected underground mine sites, representative of all rock types. This fact combined with the failure or success of the already existing support system, constitute the fundamental part of the work undertaken. The paper is divided into three main parts. In the first part the classification methods of Q, RMR89 and GSI are presented and the advantages and disadvantages of each method in connection with underground mining are indicated. RMR89 and GSI are conclusively selected for use, the main criteria for the selection being, the simplicity in use and the competency of the support system suggested for each rock mass category. The second part points out the methodology for measurements, the practical difficulties encountered during this process and the guiding principles followed, in order to avoid these problems. In the third part, the final conclusion of this project is demonstrated and the different rock mass categories are presented with their relative support recommendations, as they were applied and tested in all phases of the bauxite mines? exploitation. The generated methodology is being implemented by the site mining engineers, for validation and potential improvement.

INTRODUCTION The first stage in planning any mining venture is to determine whether the reserves are of sufficient quantity and quality to warrant commencement of mining activities. In addition to total reserve values a modern mining operation requires information on possible support problems, various pillar sizes, and an estimate on recoverable reserves. To achieve this goal in U. S. coal mines, up-to-date computer methods have been applied to existing ground control technology to provide the mining engineer with a reasonably accurate method of determining such figures. The purpose of this paper is to present a mine planning suite comprised of three computer programs, CONTUR, RESERV-COAL and RAMPLAN, created to accomplish this task. These programs were developed at VPI under the sponsorship of the Office of Coal Research (now Energy Research and Development Administration), and are currently available to the mining industry. A basic assumption in the construction of the CONTUR program is that a coal seam is variable in nature. The data available to the mining engineer comes from randomly spaced points, namely boreholes and sampling points, on outcrops or in adjacent mines. These randomly spaced data points are used in the CONTUR program to estimate numerical values at evenly spaced grid points and to provide approximate contour plans. Given the necessary gridded data, RESERV-COAL calculates raw and clean coal tonnages and then provides breakdown on the quantity of coal within specified ranges of ash, sulfur, BTU and reject. RAMPLAN (Rock Mechanics Applied to Mine Planning) also uses gridded data to calculate mining dimensions and estimate recoverable reserves, thereby

Simulations of complex physical phenomena, such as hurricanes and fluid flow around space vehicles, can now be effectively explored using modem visualisation techniques which have been developed to examine the results of numerical modelling using supercomputers. These techniques are also being applied extensively in medical investigations, including viewing the interior of the human brain. We have now applied these same techniques to the visualisation of gold deposits.Grade control in open pit gold mining operations may involve the collection of at least half a million samples in each mine. Extensive drilling programs also accompany the early reserve evaluation stages and exploration in advance of mining. Maximum utilisation of these very large amounts of information requires an ability to integrate, examine and present large three-dimensional data sets in order to be able to derive and effectively communicate information on grade distribution and geological controls.

"During the fall of 2001 a program was initiated to determine the feasibility of improving the metallurgy in the flotation circuit at the Penhorwood Talc Concentrator located near Timmins, Ontario. Bench scale testwork led Plant staff to believe that opportunities existed to improve the flotation performance. Pilot scale testing was then conducted using two vendors and their respective cylindrical type flotation cells to indicate where these opportunities existed.The results of the test program determined that the replacement of the existing flotation circuit (roughers, scavengers and cleaners) with new flotation cells could be economically viable. Justification was due to a reduction in installed horsepower, maintenance costs and a subsequent increase in recovery and throughput while maintaining product quality. Unforeseen benefits included reagent and air reduction, accurate level control as well as improved working conditions due to the removal of the antiquated equipment and ancillaries.This paper will detail the justification, installation and implementation of the new flotation circuit. A special emphasis will explain the hurdles encountered while trying to install and commission the circuit in an operating Concentrator with minimal interruptions to production.INTRODUCTIONThe Penhorwood mine and Concentrator is 28 yrs old and has gone through many ups and downs with different owners, Johns Manville, Steetley Talc and now Luzenac. It has also been expanded twice, with flotation and grinding capacity being added in recent years.All of the concentration is completed at the mine site while the fine grinding takes place in the Timmins micronizing plant.Luzenac’s Philosophy is to be the world leader in Talc production, technology and sales, having about 70% of the current world High Grade talc market."
