The effect of pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, realgar and arsenopyrite on gold dissolution in cyanide media was investigated. The cyanidation of synthetic gold ores, in the presence of various concentrations of sulphides, was studied under constant experimental conditions. A mineralogical analysis of the minerals was performed. The leaching kinetics were determined. The negative effect of sulphides on the gold dissolution rate varies with the sulphide mineral, and decreases according to the following order: realgar > pyrrhotite > chalcopyrite > pyrite > arsenopyrite. The chemical characterization of gold and sulphide minerals surfaces using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was undertaken to identify the mechanisms involved. XPS analysis showed that a passivation layer of sulphides, arsenic or iron compounds may form on the gold surface as a result of the dissolution of the sulphide minerals.

There has been some confusion over the selection of discount rates when performing stochastic simulations of a project's net present value (NPV) using risk- adjusted discounting techniques. Some argue that lower discount rates should be used when performing stochastic valuation simulations. This creates higher NPV values and improves the attractiveness of a project. Others argue that the discount rate should not be lowered for these simulations. This paper exposes the source of this confusion. It demonstrates that stochastic simulations do not remove the risk inherent in a project and, therefore-do not improve a project's value to the risk-averse investor. Risk-adjusted discount rates should, therefore, not be adjusted downward when performing stochastic NPV simulations. Stochastic simulations are, however, shown to he useful in several aspects of project valuation.

Diamond wire rock cutting is the most widely used technology in carbonate stone quarrying owing to technical performance and block face quality. Interest is also growing for siliceous deposits. This paper deals with the problem of optimum wire utilization under restrictions regarding a set of variables and parameters. A computer program of general applicability has been set up with the aim of studying the most suitable combination of technologies and the effect on the technical and economic results of bench geometry, overall quarry yield, market -stone value, quarry size as well as the quantity, productivity and price of human and material resources and their organization in the elemental working cycle. Two quarrying problems are considered as significant instances a granite and a travertine quarry. The results are illustrated and discussed.

The following is extracted from a report by the author to the International Valuation Standards Committee (IVSC), with minor modifications for the purpose of publication. The author represented the IVSC at the annual session of the Ad Hoc Group of Experts on Harmonization of Fossil Energy and Mineral Resources Terminology. This is a body organized by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). This second session, held in Geneva, Switzerland, achieved an important agreement for advancement toward uniform global standards for the classification of minerals and petroleum reserves and resources. Attendees discussed the possibility of enhancing the United Nations Framework Classification for Energy and Mineral Resources (UNFC) for implementation globally as the classification standard for use in financial reports under the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). Presently, there are between 100 and 200 mineral and petroleum resource classification (or definition) systems throughout the world — a similar number to what there are countries.

Less than a decade ago the consumption of coal in Alaska was practically limited to the salmon canneries and the few ode-mines and settlements along the Pacific coast of the The-itory. The sparse population of the interior depended on the forests, that of the shores of Bering sea and the Arctic ocean on driftwood for fuel. All this has changed. The thousands, who have sought and mined gold on the Seward peninsula since 1898, have much impoverished the long-accumulated supply of driftwood, and at the same time the constantly increas-ng demand for fuel, on the part of the placer-camps and steamers, has resulted in heavy inroads being made on the accessible timber of the Yukon and its tributaries. While, on the one hand, the immediately available store of wood has decreased, on the other, the consumption of fuel because of the rapid expansion of the mining and fishery industries, and the attendant growth of population has much in-creased. Alaska, therefore, offers a constantly growing market or coal and other fuels. As the local coal-production has been nsignificant, the demand has been met by importations from Washington, British Columbia, and even from Pennsylvania and Australia. Fuel- Consumption. Mr. D. H. Jarvis, Collector for Alaska, has kept systematic records of the trade of the Territory since 1903. The statis-ics of the coal-importations of the past two years are shown n Table I. If data were available for a longer period of years, he increase of coal-importations would be much more striking.

As sphalerite is such a common constituent of many types of ore, the present investigation was undertaken to determine what its relations are to the other minerals in the deposits, and also whether these are of any genetic significance. The data presented herewith were obtained from a mineralographic study of about 200 ore specimens from some 43 different localities, represented by suites of specimens in the Cornell University collection. Structured liner materials are available for double lined and final cover systems and are revolutionizing the way ponds, pads and final closures are constructed. This paper will discuss the structured or embossed geomembrane concept and manufacturing process. Additionally, the paper will present comparative testing illustrating the major advantages of using this type of product in these types of applications. Both technical and economic advantages are illustrated. The cost savings include lower installation costs, less material used, and third party inspection times not to mention better performance. These new systems will be presented.

"An underground reservoir was to be constructed at Doha in Qatar. Simsima lime stone is present at the bottom. When the reservoir is empty, there will be uplift at the bottom but this will change to downward load when it is full. The rock at the bottom had high bearing capacity to resist downward load. But uplift had to be resisted by piles or anchors. The reservoir has a size of 120mx80m. Shrinkage and creep of concrete coupled with thermal contraction imposed a horizontal movement of 26mm on the extreme piles. So, piles have to accommodate this as well. This unique situation needed a unique solution. The solution was to provide piles with flexible high tensile strands to take tension. An annular space near the head of the pile would facilitate horizontal movement as well. Compression load was directly passed on to the raft bearing on rock.INTRODUCTIONAn underground reservoir for storage of drinking water was to be constructed at Doha, Qatar. The reservoir was proposed to have a plan size of 120m x 80m. Clear height inside the reservoir was proposed as 17.2m, from the bottom of roof to the top of bottom raft. Overall height of the reservoir at the outlet from the top of the roof to the bottom of raft was to be 21.2m. For the sake of inspection and in order to prevent pollution from the surroundings a gallery was planned around the reservoir. This could accommodate pipelines as well. This gallery was 3.0m wide on three sides and 8.4m wide on the outlet side.The gallery had removable gratings as cover in order to facilitate maintenance. Capacity of the reservoirwas proposed to be 40million gallons. The reservoir is divided into four compartments with baffle walls in each one for water circulation. Roof of the reservoir is kept at 300mm above ground level. There are two levels of car park on top of the reservoir. Top of the reservoir roof is at +14.35. Bottom varies from - 6.68 to -7.08. Lowest water table is at +6.00. Concrete structure of the reservoir was designed by a local consultant. The Navayuga Engineering Company was entrusted with the construction. A 3.3 m (11 feet) diameter, 51 m (168 feet) deep temporary steel casing which had been sunk within glacial soils buckled and collapsed on July 29, 1985. The collapse occurred at the CT-8 Dropshaft site in Milwaukee while two workmen were contact grouting outside the casing in an attempt to stop groundwater inflows through a bottom plug. This paper describes the soil and groundwater conditions at the site, the casing design, the method of shaft construction, and probable causes of the buckling failure. Specific aspects of the paper include: slurry method of shaft excavation and casing installation, soil creep, earth pressure due to three dimensional arching, and buckling strength of a casing surrounded by slurry rather than grout and firm soil. The paper should be of interest to designers and constructors of temporary ground support systems for deep shafts.

The action of free rolling disc cutters is well understood, relationships between disc geometry and performance having been established both in the laboratory and under field conditions. However, under severe operational conditions a malfunction of the disc bearing assembly is likely to produce a definite change of cutting action. Collapsed or siezed bearings can even prevent the disc from rolling and thereby create what is equivalent to a drag pick. This paper describes a programme of laboratory experiments using deliberately stalled discs. Their performance under such conditions is contrasted with that for a free rolling disc and also with a drag pick having a ridged front developing into a negative radiused back clearance angle. In conclusion an assessment is made of the influence stalled discs can have on the torque and thrust requirements for a tunnel boring machine.

In the chlorination process for TiO2 pigment production, blends of titania feedstocks such as ilmenite, synthetic rutile (SR), natural rutile, upgraded slag, and chloride-grade slag are reacted with coke and chlorine at a temperature of around 1000°C to form TiCl4, which is the main product, and other waste metal chlorides. TiCl4 is the main feed material for the TiO2 pigment-making process. Feeding different titania materials to the chlorinator affects the amounts of coke and chlorine required for the process, the amount of waste generated, waste disposal costs, the amount of TiCl4 produced, and bed build-up rates. These factors influence the value of the feedstock. Generally, a higher TiO2 feedstock is more valued since less waste is generated and less reagents are consumed. To quantify the impact of different feedstocks on the chlorinator, a techno-economic model was developed to describe the chlorination process and estimate process variables at steady state. This paper describes the development of the model and studies in which the model has been used to quantify the effects of using different feedstocks.

As permissible explosives and electric detonators are now generally recognized as the only safe means of blasting in coal mines, this paper is limited to their use. Causes of Misfires There are many different causes of misfires, but the principal ones are as follows: 1. Explosives which have deteriorated through improper storage either at the storage magazine, the distributing magazine, or at the working face. This is not only true of the explosive itself, but also of its detonating agent. 2. Improper priming and charging at the working face. This commonly occurs when the explosives are handled by inexperienced persons. 3. Improper methods of tamping; the leg wires of the detonator may be abraded or broken by the tamping bar or stick, thereby causing a short or broken circuit. 4. Faulty leading wire, or electrical apparatus of insufficient strength to explode the detonator. Prevention of Misfires Storage is an important factor, especially with permissibles of a nitrate or ammonia base. Both explosives and detonators should be stored in substantially built, fire-resisting magazines and should be situated so that the minimum amount of moisture and heat is present. They should be so constructed that a constant supply of fresh air enters; the floor of the magazine should be raised to permit the circulation of air under the stored explosives. Boxes should be stored top side up and in such a manner that the old explosives are used before those of a later delivery. This eliminates chance of deterioration from lengthy storage. Detonators should be similarly handled and stored. The distributing magazine stock should be regulated so that not more than one day's supply is on hand.

Rational decision making is generally perceived by managers of operations to be a delicate process of committing large sums of money and putting other people's life at risk. Consequently most managers may argue that the decision process requires good judgement, intuition and extreme caution; and not one easily made through the use of fancy mathematical algorithms and computer programs. The advent of artificial intelligence and expert systems in the computer industry combined with recent technological innovations in mathematical and economic problem solving is sure to change this perception. PARETO OPTIMALITY is an economic and a mathematical optimisation concept applied to solving real life operational problems; and one that the current volatile economic forces would require managers to employ because it is virtually real. REALISMM is a computer software package developed using the principles of Pareto optimality, dynamic programming, optimal clustering of information and decision maker interaction to generate decision maker preferred solutions. REALISMM has scope for artificial intelligence and expert systems application for cases where the decision maker is unsure about his objective preferences.
