GENTLEMEN : If my first words were other than those of thanks for the high honor of being called to preside over the American Institute of Mining Engineers, I should do injustice alike to you and to my own sense of the obligation, under which I have been placed by your voluntary choice. When the position was first suggested to me, I resolutely declined to allow the use of my name, on the ground that, by training and occupation, I was not entitled to this honor, which, it then seemed to me, should be conferred only on a professional engineer. In fact, the history of the Institute, which had honored itself, as well as my distinguished predecessors, David Thomas, Rossiter W. Raymond, and Alexander L. Holley, by elevating them to its highest office, seemed to indicate the line and the limit of safe precedent, in which I did not then see how I could be included. But my scruples were finally removed by the consideration that, as in the course of human industry, the pioneer, of whom Mr. Thomas was so marked a type, must precede the mining engineer, so fitly personified in Dr. Raymond, and be followed by the mechanical engineer, whose incarnation we behold in Mr. Holley; so all these must be supplemented by the man of affairs and finance, in order that "enterprises of great pith and moment" may be prosecuted to a successful issue. I felt, therefore, that I had no longer any right to resist your preference, or to deprive myself of what I must regard as the crowning honor of an active career. On an occasion like the present it seems appropriate to review the history in this country, during the last hundred years, of those industries which the Institute of Mining Engineers specially represents. There is much in the story with which other members of this body are more familiarly acquainted than myself; yet I fancy that to all of them, and not less to our distinguished and most heartily welcome guests from abroad, a comprehensive outline of the progress of mining and metallurgy in the United States will prove interesting. I ask your attention, therefore, to a condensed account of that subject, embracing a statement of the beginnings of the industry on our shores, of the notable events attending its increase, and of its present

Tailings, or flotation waste, formed during copper production may be considered in the class of valuable wastes because of the amount of copper they contain. With the decreasing grade values of copper ores, the utilization of wastes like tailings that carry certain amounts of copper as secondary sources has become a necessity in both the economic and environmental senses. This study was carried out with the aim of using ammonium derivatives for the recovery of copper from tailings waste produced during copper production and utilizing their complex formation characteristics. In the conditions of six hours of leaching at 30 °C in the presence of 22.5 percent ammonium hydroxide and 100 g/L ammonium persulfate, 91.47 percent of the copper was transferred into the solution, while iron was not transferred, indicating that copper can be selectively recovered from tailings.

"In an effort to increase productivity, the use of fly ash as a binder for consolidated backfill was studied. From laboratory and underground tests f or its cementitious properties and environmental effects, it was found that a portion of Portland cement could be replaced by the same amount of type ""C"" fly ash to produce an acceptable consolidated rockfill product for use at Kidd Creek.The environmental concerns in terms of dust control and emanation of radon gas were unfounded from measurements. The dust count was comparable to the use of Portland cement only, or with ground blast furnace slag, and the radiation readings were low, averaging one-seventh the regulation level.Since May 1984, a total of over 100 000tonnes of fly ash has been consumed as a binder blended with Portland cement, producing over four million tonnes of consolidated rockfill. To date, the fill in the stopes has performed very satisfactorily, while yielding considerable cost savings.IntroductionThe Kidd Creek minesite, located 27 km north of the city centre of Timmins, Ontario, produces 4.5 million tonnes of base metal sulphide ore annually. The mining method for both No. I and No .2 mines is mainly sub-level blasthole stoping with delayed backfilling.No. 1 mine was developed with a shaft to a depth of 930 m in 1973 to recover the ore between the floor of the open pit at the 216 m horizon, and the 792 m horizon. Stopes are normally 18 m wide, 22 m to 65 m long, with heights varying from 90 m to 135 m. Vertical rib pillars between stopes are typically 24 m wide and sill pillars are 30 m thick.Pillar recovery is implemented after the consolidated rockfill placed in the mined stopes has cured for a period of at least three months. This allows a maximum recovery of the ore with a minimum of dilution, while also maintaining safe working conditions.No. 2 mine was developed from a second shaft, sunk to a depth of 1530 m in 1978, for the recovery of ore beneath the No. I mine. Sub-level stoping in No .2 mine is similar to No.1 mine in methodology, yet differs in sequencing, as no rib pillars are left."

The rapid development of real-time monitoring technology for the construction of large underground structures in urban areas can be attributed to: the zero-risk objective, the need for transparency between all parties involved and the control of real cost within the budget. Real-time monitoring can be an integral part of the construction contract (for example when compensation grouting is required) or independent, in particular when measurements of existing structures and buildings bordering the project are to be taken before construction starts. Three examples of extensive field instrumentation schemes are described: a large road tunnel in the Moscow suburbs, a new metro line in Amsterdam and major redevelopment works at a busy Central London rail interchange.

Chemistry of the evolution of materials in contact with copper converter tuyeres is delineated by means of analyses of periodic punch rod samples taken during a converter cycle. Lining samples from known peripheral and end locations from three converters were investigated chemically and petrographically. One set of eight specimens representative of all lining parts was removed for study before completion of the campaign. Purely surface removal by slag action is minor. Slag filling of interconnecting cracks extending to the hot face results in a "stoping'' action which shapes the hot face contour and is a significant factor. Major wear mechanism is believed to be copper metal slabbbing caused by metal first penetrating joins and invading fractures or impregnating brick structure laterally from the joints. Importance of lining design and joint fit are emphasized. New laboratory tests are indicated. In the copper converter, molten matte, which is essentially a solution of iron and copper sulfides, is blown with air to produce blister copper. During the first stage of the process the FeS component is oxidized to SOz and FeO, the latter combining with a siliceous flux to form a predominantly ferrous silicate slag. Successive increments of matte and flux are charged, blown, and skimmed of slag until sufficient CuzS ("white metal") has accumulated. This white metal is then blown to copper metal in the final or blister-forming stage by the oxidation of sulfur to SOz and the reduction of combined copper to metal. The reactions of both stages are exothermic so provide the required heat. Temperature is controlled by cold scrap copper, flue dusts, smelter reverts, and so forth. Considerable vari- ation in practices occur depending on the type of converter, grades of the matte and flu, and other factors. Lathe and Hodnett's' survey of world converter practices gives much information on these variations and their effects on the refractories. Principles of converting chemistry are presented by Newton and wilson,' Ruddle,' and schuhmann. Most copper converting occurs within the temperature range 2100" to 2370°F although individual smelters report1 ranges from as low as 1700" to 2240°F to a high of 2200" to 2400°F. Temperature intervals reported from beginning to end of blow varied from 45" to 540°F. Average temperature range was 2030" to 2260°F and the average interval 250°F During the matte-blowing stage varying amounts of magnetite (FeO.Fe,O,) are formed in the slag as suspended crystals and also the liquid portion of the slag will contain, in addition to ferrous silicate, some Fe20s which adds to the potential magnetite formation if the temperature falls. This is a component of the so-called "dissolved magnetite" often referred to in the literature. Although the slag may contain minor amounts of CaO, A1209, MgO, and alkalies, the principal components are Fe0-Fez03-SiO,. The phase equilibria relationships of this system have been elucidated by Muan~ and Schuhmann, et a1.' These data and estimates of converting atmospheres by schuhmann4 are useful tools in studying slag behavior. It would appear that in many cases reported magnetite contents of slags are apparently higher than actually is present at operating temperature. This is probably because much of it is formed during slag solidification. The quaternary systems which have Mg-0,1,0,' and addition to iron oxides and silica are also of interest in considering the reactions of the slags with basic refractories. The formation of magnetite has an important interrelationship throughout the pyrometallurgy of copper (Mossman,' Gronningsater and Drummond," Ruddle,' Elwood and Henderson") but its presence in the converter particularly relates to operating efficiency and lining life in certain instances. The extension of Montparnasse Station in Paris required the construction of supports of very high unit capacity to support a particularly rigid super-structure. The majority of the site is characterized by the existence of old limestone quarries at a depth of approximately 20 metres. These workings have been backfilled in some places, have collapsed in some places and have given rise to local subsidences in the marne layers above them. This paper addresses the steps taken by the group of companies and their consultants to evaluate the equivalent stiffnesses of the supports necessary for the design of the superstructure, and gives details of the construction techniques chosen by the foundations specialist to adapt to the particular conditions encountered on this site.

Montana consists of an Archean crystalline basement overlain by Proterozoic through Cenozoic sedimentary rocks. Igneous rocks range in age from Archean to Pleistocene; the most voluminous magmatism and volcanism occurred during the Late Cretaceous and early Tertiary. The state can be divided into three tectonic provinces whose deformational styles are a function of different bedrock responses to Late Cretaceous-early Eocene compressional tectonism. Several long-lived structural zones have been periodically reactivated since the Precambrian, and were the sites of recurrent magmatism. Regional gold distributions are strongly influenced by the tectonic provinces and structural zones. Lode gold systems in Montana occur in diverse geologic settings resulting from a complex interaction between structure, magmatism, and sedimentary depositional processes. Reserves or resources are known for 19 significant lode gold systems, and additional unannounced discoveries have been made recently. Mineralization ranges in age from Archean to Tertiary. The influence of long-lived structures is apparent at both the regional and deposit scale, and in some cases multiple mineralizing events have been superimposed upon one another. Most Montana gold systems have a direct spatial and genetic association with Late Cretaceous through Oligocene igneous rocks. However, the importance of sedimentary rocks and associated depositional processes should not be underestimated.

In addition to ten papers (all preprinted) on properties, structure, aid hardenability of, carbon and alloy steels, eight formal papers were presented on one or more phases of steelmaklng, and a symposium on the determination of hydrogen and nitrogen in steel. This last started at 2 p.m. and was going strong with more than a third of the audience still present at 6 p.m.

The countries of Eastern Europe are former members of the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance (CMEA). Geographically, they are located in Central Europe (Poland, Hungary, Czechoslovakia) and Southeastern Europe, largely in the Balkans (Yugoslavia*, Bulgaria, Romania and Albania*). It is important to remember that all of the countries of Eastern Europe had central planning imposed on them by the Soviet Union during the years following World War II. "Stalinist" policy for industrial development had three important tenets: • central economic planning, or a nonmarket-based command economy with administratively set prices; • economic priorities that stressed the development of heavy industries such as mining, metallurgy (steel) and heavy machine building; and • self-sufficiency at all costs, which was aimed at abolishing reliance on the world capitalist market, or reducing it to a minimum. Essentially, the system of industrialization that was used in the Soviet Union in the 1930s and 1940s was imposed on Eastern Europe. Organic market economic development in Eastern Europe ceased during this period. The flaws of this experiment became apparent when mineral processing facilities were set up in many areas of Eastern Europe that did not have reliable resources. Poland, Hungary and Romania are good examples of this situation. The Soviet Union became the principal supplier of iron ore and other minerals and mineral fuels, not only to these countries but to the Bloc as a whole.

During the past two years California has developed a new and important oil-field: I refer to Midway. This field produced the famous Lake View gusher, which is credited with a total production in excess of 8,000,000 barrels. Fortunately for the oil industry of the State, this well is now a thing of the past, and nothing, save a great crater-like opening marks its location. The pipe is entirely worn away and gone; and it is a matter of serious doubt if there can be anything done that will cause the well to produce again. Fortunately, also, there have been no other wells in that field or elsewhere throughout the State that in any may compared with the Lake View. Midway is noted for large wells, of from 500 to 2,000 barrels production; but the decline is rapid, and a few months serve to bring the output down to a few hundred barrels. In the oil-territory heretofore blocked out as proved and probable, there have been, during the year, many changes. Some areas which were expected to be fairly productive have apparently failed; others, more strictly "wild-cat," have come in; while in some of the older fields there are properties which are beginning to shorn evident signs of exhaustion. THE pressure distribution in a producing oil or gas reservoir has been obtained mathematically in a limited number of special cases where the boundary of the reservoirs are simple geometric figures with the wells conveniently located within them. Using some of the previous work as a basis, it can be proved that a number of additional problems of pressure distribution can be solved by use of soap film. This method is particu-larly applicable to a reservoir drained by a number of wells, or to a reservoir of irregular shape, or to both. Since this method obtains the pressure distribution, it also establishes the drainage boundaries of the wells. This paper derives the analogy between the equation representing the pressure distribution in a reservoir and the equation of the deflected membrane. It also describes the apparatus and the method of operation. The experimental method is employed to solve a problem whose mathe-matical solution is known and the results compared. These are found to be in good agreement. The method is applicable to any homogeneous liquid, compressible or incompressible, or to a gas, flowing in a reservoir of uniform thickness, permeability and porosity. The flow state may be either the steady state or the transient state wherein the density or pressure of the fluid in the reservoir declines at a constant rate.

INTRODUCTION The Astoria property is located in the prolifically mineralized Abitibi greenstone belt and is one of the most advanced projects presently under development by Yorbeau Resources Inc. This property, which hosts the Astoria gold deposit, is located in the southern part of Rouyn township, Abitibi area, Quebec, 4 km south of the city of Rouyn-Noranda (Figure 1). The Astoria deposit has been the subject of underground development for over a half century, beginning with Granada Rouyn Mining Co. in the 1930's and followed by Astoria Rouyn Mines Ltd. in the 1940's. Yorbeau Resources Inc. acquired the property in 1984 and has, since then, conducted numerous exploration programs on this gold deposit. The diluted reserves of the Astoria deposit are estimated at 1,3 million metric tons grading 6,14 grams of gold per metric ton (1.4 million st at 0.18 oz/st). This reserve figure is based on the results of surface and underground exploration carried out from January 1986 to June 1987 and includes ore in the proven, probable and possible categories. This paper is divided into two sections. The first part includes a summary of the geological environment including a description of the gold bearing zones and a short discussion on wall rock alteration. The second part of this paper reviews the underground work and the objective of the ongoing exploration program.

Injury experience at metal mines and mills (excluding officeworkers) in 1964 was 60 fatal and 3,672 nonfatal disabling work injuries during an exposure time of 149 million man-hours worked. These injuries occurred at a frequency rate of 24.57 per million man-hours and had a severity rate of 3,687 days lost or charged per million man-hours. Employment at 2,363 metal mines and 291 mills, excluding officeworkers, was 68,140 men in 1964. The average number of days worked was 274 The principal cause of fatal injuries at all mines and mills was haulage accidents and in underground mines, only, was falls of ground. The principal cause of nonfatal injuries was handling material accidents. The frequency rate at metal mines and mills in 1964 was slightly below that of 1963, whereas the severity rate was higher. Injury experience at 94 primary nonferrous smelters, refineries, and reduction plants (excluding officeworkers) was 8 fatal and 999 nonfatal disabling work injuries during a worktime of 98 million man-hours worked. The combined injury-frequency rate in 1964 was 10.29 and the injury-severity rate was 1,005. The 36,956 employees worked an average of 329 days during 1964. The principal cause of injuries at these plants was handling material accidents.

"Total Quality Management (TQM) is becoming a reality in the mining industry. Widely adopted in the manufacturing and services industries, TQM has become the operating style of choice in numerous mining companies across the Americas and Australia. Iron Ore Company of Canada, Inco, MSA, Graniterock, Magma Copper, and CRA's Hamersly Iron - all are pioneers of TQM. These companies and others are confronting the challenges of implementing TQM and are managing the changes required of their people and cultures. What these companies are doing, why they are doing it, and how they are successfully managing the changes are the subjects of this paper.Driving the need for change in these organizations are a host of issues, some of which all mining companies are facing. Requirements from customers for ISO 9000 certification is becoming one of the initial motivators for Total Quality Management. These standards, commonly used in manufacturing throughout the European Community (EC), emphasize quality in the processes that create outputs, instead of just the outputs themselves. Iron Ore Company of Canada, for instance, responding to the requirement of one of its customers, British Steel, has become one of the first mining companies to meet the quality standard. Suppliers who meet the standards are highly desirable to customers who are themselves operating under the ISO or their national quality guidelines."

Real-time monitoring makes it possible to detect any disturbance occurring in production, while decision instruments can efficiently assist decision-makers to optimize production, reduce iterative workload, obtain better solutions, and preview possible results. Technologies for the above already exist and have been proven in the process industry, i.e. refining and smelting. Optimization is also essential for profitable and stable mining production. Real-time monitoring has already taken hold in mining operations, especially in surface mining, while optimization techniques have also been widely used in underground mining, particularly for planning and scheduling. This review is limited to the hard-rock mining production of metallic ores such as gold and copper. It reviews optimization techniques developed for mine planning and scheduling, and communication technologies suitable for underground applications. It also presents control features for individual operation units, and discusses the technical viability of a mining production real-time optimization (MPRTO) system for underground mines, with possible benefits and challenges. Operational disturbances always occur in mine production. An MPRTO system can be useful to maintain operational effectiveness and efficiency by allowing quick changes to short-term plans. This paper briefly describes the MPRTO system, including the input, output, and basic algorithms. The technical prerequisites for the system specified here are already available. Skin failures of roof and rib in underground coal mines continue to be a significant safety hazard for mine workers. Skin failures do not usually involve failure of the support systems but result from rock or coal spalling from between the support elements. For instance in 1997, over 800 miners were injured by roof and rib falls, of which 98 pet were the result of skin failures. Also, nearly 80 pct of the roof and rib failure injuries occurred at or near the working faces in development sections. The face area is a zone where the potential for skin failure accidents and injuries and roof and rib failures, in general, is high because of mining activity, ground readjustment due to changing stress conditions, and the higher exposure of mine workers. In addition, failures occur where the roof and rib are unsupported. This paper features a review of the roof and rib accident statistics resulting from skin failure, highlighting the incidences by average days lost, in-mine location, state, MSHA District, and worker activity at the time of injury. A detailed analysis of recent fatalities caused by skin failure is included. Also discussed are the causes of roof and rib skin failures, current methods and support materials for skin surface control, as well as a historical literature review of skin failures and control methods.

Jane Mine of the Keystone Coal Mining Corporation was started in 1962 and is in the Lower Freeport seas located in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, approximately 45 miles northeast of Pittsburgh. The mine is a slope/shaft complex with the cover ranging from 100 feet at the slope to 450 feet near the back end of the property. The seam height ranges from 48 to 72 inches. A variety of roof conditions have been en¬countered, and an equal variety of roof control systems have been tried with varying degrees of success. Initially, places could be mined as deep as 100 feet without any permanent roof support. After several problems and the advent of the Health and Safety Act of 1969, roof control became more and more prevalent and predominant at the Jane Mine. It started with 4 foot conventional oolts. As the mine progressed in the northeasterly direction, roof conditions changed from the extremely good roof that was encountered initially, to bad roof; and other types of roof support were required. Sixty pound rails and 6 inch 25 pound to the foot steel I-beams were used for supplemental support in long life headings such as belt and track. Resin bolting was done in many areas for long life support due to the deterioration of the shale roof over time. Several areas had to be abandoned because of uncontrollable top.

East Guangdong tin province overlaps the southmost part of the mesozoic magmatic arcof continental margin type in Southeast China and is dominated by mesozoic syntectic magmatism,which associated to tin mineralization. It is distinguished from Nanling tin province but quite close to NW Bolivian tin province in both tectonic and magmatic relations.Tin deposit's mostly of cassiterite-sulfide, cassiterite-silicate formations are localized along exsocontact zone of granitoid batholith or stock, boundary area of volcanic depression, or, within volcanic edifice. Petrochemistry studies show tin was concentrated as intermediate-acidic magma evolved by fractional crystallization. Xiling tin deposit of vein type related to extrusive... the lava dome was formed at T C 221-301 and at very shellow depth,seems to correspond to type A in classification for Bolivia tin deposits by J.N.Grant. Tashan tin deposit of dissemination type related to hypergene intrusive facies,with mineralization occured in endocontact zone of granite porphyry dykes is considered as porphyry type,which spported by H-0 isotope and gas-liquid inclusion evidences. It formed at T C 250-430, comparable to Bolivia porphyry tin deposits,but at a greater depth 1.3 3.0km.A model for known tin deposits in East Guangdong was worked out. A good prospecting perspective was revealed for the potential type of tin deposit in East Guangdong--subvolcanic porphyry tin deposit.

The SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory’s two-mile-long particle accelerator generates the world’s brightest X-rays from its Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) freeelectron laser. This facility has driven groundbreaking discoveries in medicine and industry. The LCLS-II-HE project will provide a significant increase in laser energy, allowing cutting-edge research in fields including biology and environmental science. A key project component is the Low Emittance Injector Tunnel (LEIT), a 240-foot-long tunnel to be built alongside the existing accelerator and connected to it via a 30-footlong Transfer Tunnel. This paper discusses site and scientific constraints that led to the selection of the LEIT configuration: tunnels to be constructed using the sequential excavation method in mixed-face conditions comprising native rock and placed backfill, and critical design considerations including protection of overlying and adjacent historic structures and structural accommodation of near-fault seismic loading.

The expected curtailment of activities within the gold-mining industry by the closure of the more marginal mines, and the shortening of the life of the industry as a whole as a result of rising costs and/or an uncertain gold price, are factors that are bound to harm the South African economy in a number of ways. The industry has no option but to regard the gold price, which is determined on the world market, as a given quantity. The remaining ore reserves al tend to be of a lower grade and/or to be found at greater depth. Therefore tighter control of working costs would seem to be almost the only option open to the industry. Working costs can be divided into two broad categories: costs emanating from the environmental characteristics of the orebody, and costs emanating from the general inflationary environment in which the industry has to purchase its inputs. Working costs stemming from the physical environment also fall into two categories: those relating to the grade of the orebody, and those resulting from working at increasing depth and temperature, together with the need to pump increasing quantities of water. The industry is both capital- and labour-intensive in absolute terms, since it requires large inputs of labour as well as of capital. It is limited in its scope to adjust its production function by becoming more labour- or more capital intensive, and is dependent on a large labour force, which cannot easily be replaced by capital inputs. On the other hand, large amounts of capital are required for investment in shafts, development, machinery, and equipment. Since the early seventies, the working costs of the South African gold-mining industry have increased at an annual rate that was significantly higher than the general rate of inflation. This rapid rise in working costs has caused some mines to find themselves in a difficult profit position. At times, the gold-mining industry has even been compelled to restructure its cost/revenue relationship rather fundamentally by revising the grade of ore worked sharply upwards or downwards, as the case may be. The rise in the gold price since 1972 has made it possible for the industry to introduce significant changes in its Black wage policy. The main aim was to increase the permanency of the Black labour force and to encourage local Black workers to join the industry. At the same time, significant increases were also experienced in the cost of machinery and stores, as well as of capital, mainly as a result of inflation. In the study on which this paper is based, the author attempted to measure the influence of environmental factors on working costs, using the physical consumption of electricity as a criterion for measurement. He found that the usefulness of this criterion in relation to factors such as depth, temperature, and water quantities pumped was invariably more than neutralized by the effects of greater productivity and economies of scale. The effects of these environmental factors on the working costs of the industry could therefore not be determined to any degree of accuracy. It seems that good progress is being made with the development of capital-intensive forms of technology aimed at coping with rapidly rising working costs and other effects of increasing depth. Techniques are also being developed to improve rock-cutting procedures and to eliminate the use of explosives in order to introduce a continuous mining process. On the whole, the gold-mining industry seems to be more sensitive to general inflationary pressures than to the cost effects that are associated with depth, temperature, and water quantities pumped. Greater control is possible over physical environmental factors such as the grade of ore mined, temperature, rate and nature of development of a mine, and adaptation of the daily working cycle to a continuous mining process. Wolfe and others hold the view that the industry will lose control over labour costs as a result of the 'sharp increase in wages and the growth of Black trade unions. However, the use of more capital-intensive technology will allow the industry to reduce its labour force, and a smaller, better-trained, and more permanent labour force will enable the industry to cope with the increasingly difficult physical environment and higher wages.
