The first commercial application of the Dynatec two-stage zinc pressure leach process commenced operation at the metallurgical complex of Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., Limited in Flin Flon, Manitoba in 1993. A key feature of the successful leaching operation is the presence of iron in solution, which facilitates oxygen transfer in the autoclaves and enables rapid oxidation of zinc sulphide minerals. At the same time, the solution from which zinc is recovered must be essentially iron free. Precipitation of iron from the solution starts in the autoclaves and is completed in subsequent atmospheric purification steps. Conveniently, these iron precipitation steps also remove nuisance elements such as arsenic and fluoride from the solution, while producing solids with good liquid-solid separation characteristics. This paper provides an overview of the current operations in Flin Flon, with particular reference to the behaviour and deportment of iron throughout the zinc plant.

Based on the World Class Manufacturing methodology, applied mainly in serial production industries, we have challenged ourselves to adapt the main concepts and implement them in a tooling company. After one work year, we could notice 29% productivity improvement in the bottleneck process, 25% cost reduction in outsourcing, standardization of the processes, 8% reduction in direct labor. Consequently, it was possible to implement a financial reserve and a long term planning cash flow.

Haulage accidents in the anthracite region cause fewer fatal and lost-time accidents per million man-hours than similar accidents in bituminous mines, a fact that may be accounted for in several ways, but primarily because haulage, in a large part of the region, is restricted to haulage crews operating only on the gangways where most of the miners seldom come in contact with movement or handling of cars and locomotives. Generally in underground mines the number of men injured compared with the number killed is greater for haulage than for roof-fall accidents, while the number of men killed by haulage is second only to the number killed by roof falls.

The activity of aluminum in solid Co-A1 alloys has been measured by an isopiestic technique between 850° and 1200°C from 45 to 80 at. pct Al. The activity shows a Precipitous decrease around the stoichzornetric composition of CoAl. Free energies of mixing have been calculated over a limited composition range. Considering an antistructure-vacancy defect mechanism, the degree of intrinsic disorder, a , in CoAl was related to the alunminum activity. Excellent agreement between the calculated and experimental activity curves was obtained for a = 1.25 x 10-4. ThERMODYNAMIC properties of solid aluminum-transition metal alloy are being studied in an investigation of disordering in ordered compounds. In a continuing series of investigations, activities of solid Fe-1,' Ni-A1, kd r-A13 alloys have been measured. From the results for Fe-A1 and Ni-A1, the degree of intrinsic disorder for the equiatomic compounds was calculated2 using equations derived by Wagner and chottk. From the results for Cr-A1 the degree of intrinsic disorder was calculated from equations derived by Orr.' In this paper, the results of the study of Co-A1 alloys are described. Published activity data in the Co-A1 system has been limited to liquid alloys at 1600°C.° A heat capacity study7 of stoichiometric CoAl indicated that a second-order phase transformation occurs at 790° C, attributed to an order-disorder reaction. Oelsen and Middel,' employing the calorimetric mixing of pure liquid metals, obtained heats of formation for compositions from 6 to 90 at. pct Co. Heats of formation for 50 and 78 at. pct Co alloys have also been measured by acid solution calrimetr. The Co-A1 phase diagram, as compiled by Hansen and Anderko,lo is in good agreement with more recent X-ray evidence. The method for measuring activities of aluminum in this study is essentially that employed in the studies of the Fe-1,' i-Al, and r-A13 systems. This isopiestic method entails placing cobalt specimens, in a temperature gradient, in a sealed alumina system containing a pure liquid aluminum source of fixed vapor pressure. The specimens are equilibrated, cooled to room temperature, and their final compositions determined. From the measured temperature of the specimens and the known vapor pressure of pure aluminum the activities of aluminum in the alloy can be calculated. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The cobalt was 3-mil-thick sheet of 99.9 pct purity (herritt Gordon Mines Ltd., anada). The major impurities were 0.1 pct Ni, 0.014 pct C, 0.018 pct Fe, 0.004 pct S, and 0.005 pct Cu. The aluminum metal had a purity of 99.99 pct (Aluminum Corp. of America) and all alumina parts were 99.7 pct A1,O3 (Triangle RR Grade, Morganite Refractories, Inc.) with major impurities 0.05 pct SiOz, 0.1 pct Fe203, 0.2 pct NazO, and 0.05 pCt K20. Runs 1 to 3 were made with annular cobalt specimens (12 mm ID by 21 mm OD) punched from the sheet. The specimens were deburred and degreased in carbon tetrachloride and in acetone. The samples, each weighing about 150 mg, were then positioned along an alumina rod, a in. OD by 14 in. long, separated by alumina spacers, i in. ID by | in. OD by & in. long. The lower end of the rod was placed in a hole drilled in the center of an 80-g aluminum cylinder. This assembly was put into an alumina crucible, 1+ in. ID by 13 in. OD by 3+ in. high, and the position of each sample was measured to within 50.5 mm relative to the bottom of the crucible. An alumina tube, 28.5 mm ID by 35.5 mm OD by 14 in. long, closed at the top, was slipped over the whole assembly, so that it fitted snugly into the bottom crucible. The entire reaction assembly was tied with molybdenum wire and lowered into a mullite tube, closed at the bottom. A quartz thermocouple tube, closed at one end, containing a t/Pt-10 pct Rh thermocouple, calibrated according to the specifications of the National Bureau of standards,'' was placed along the reaction assembly inside the mullite tube. The temperature of each specimen could be determined by gradually raising the thermocouple and measuring the temperature gradient along the reaction assembly. The combined error in temperature measurement and sample position resulted in a total error of Q°C in the recorded temperature of each sample. The mullite tube was sealed at the top by a water-cooled brass head, connected to a conventional glass vacuum system. The aluminum reservoir is heated to its melting point sealing the alumina system containing the samples. During this process the pressure is maintained below 0.01 li Hg. During subsequent heating to establish the proper temperature gradient and throughout the entire run the pressure is maintained below 2 1 Hg by means of a two-stage mechanical pump. Equilibration runs lasted from 4 to 6 weeks and were terminated by air cooling. The temperature of the liquid aluminum reservoir was brought below its melting point in less than 20 min. For runs 4 and 5, alloy buttons with 49 and 69 at. pct A1 were prepared from the initial high-purity metals by arc melting under purified argon. The alloy buttons were comminuted to powder with an alumina mortar and pestle until the powder passed through a 400-mesh screen, particle size 0.0014 in. INTRODUCTION The requirement that is placed on owners and operators of underground mines to protect workers against the health hazard of inhaling radioactive materials which are short-lived decay products of 222Rn can be satisfied by applying a considerable variety of what we may call "engineering" solutions as well as a number of "administrative" remedies to the problem. The most obvious of the "engineering" approaches has always been that of forced ventilation, in which relatively clean (i.e., radon-free) air from aboveground is drawn or pushed through the mine workings by a system of fans and ducts. This relatively clean air, in sweeping through the drifts, stopes and haulageways, dilutes the radon and radon-daughter concentrations in the air of the mine, and performs the added beneficial function of removing the daughter-mixture quickly enought to limit grow-in of the longer-lived nuclides in the group that make up the "toxic trio" on which the Working Level (IM) unit is based. Effective as the dilution-ventilation method is for control of WL in most underground mining situations, however, the increasing strictness of control measures that have been imposed on the mining industry over the last two decades have demanded measures of even greater effectiveness. In times of poor markets for yellow-cake and other products of the mines, mine operators are pressed to reduce operating costs, and the installation of additional primary ventilation capacity can be a severe burden on a mine that is already laboring under an unfavorable earning power. When traditional dilution-ventilation systems alone cannot meet the requirement for WI, control, radiation safety engineers and ventilation engineers begin to look at alternatives and auxiliary methods. Since the radon which produces the toxic daughter products originates in the rock of the mine walls, and since, in most United States mines, that rock is a porous sandstone through which air can move under the effect of atmospheric pressure gradients, and through which radon can diffuse relatively freely, one way to help control the growth of WL would be to hinder the escape of radon from that reservior of porous rock. An appealing; method for hindering that natural flux of radon-polluted air from the walls of the mine has long been apparent; namely, to apply a low-permeability coating over the surface of the rock, thus sealing the radon in place and, in theory at least, preventing its escape into the mine air. Our 1970 report to the U.S. Federal Radiation Council on the subject of cost impacts of proposed changes in the occupational standards for exposure of underground uranium miners to airborne radon daughters noted the possibility of using polymeric wall sealants as a means of controlling radon-pollution of mine air. Since that time a number of reports have appeared in the technical literature advocating this technique for restraining the escape of radon from building materials, mill tailings, and other materials containing 226Ra, in addition to the surfaces of underground mine workings. During this period, some controversy has occurred over the question of the probable effectiveness of wall sealants in limiting the escape of radon from the rock. Our 1970 report speculated that flaws (cracks and "pinholes") in the coating might be all but unavoidable in practice, and that even a conservative estimate of the frequency of such flaws would lead to a prediction of ineffectiveness. Hammon et al, in a laboratory evaluation of radon sealants conducted by Lawrence Livermore Laboratory of the University of California in 1975 on behalf of U.S. Bureau of Mines, concluded that a wide variety of polymeric coatings would provide "nearly 100% effectiveness" in restrain¬ing escape of radon from mine wall surfaces if applied in "thicknesses between 5 and 10 mil" (125-250 [y]pm). John Franklin and co-workers at the U.S. Bureau of Mines laboratories in Spokane, Washington, have carried the experiments with polymeric sealants through additional laboratory tests and into actual mine environments, reporting that selected sealants could provide attenuation of radon flux by a factor of four (75-80% reduction). Robert Bates and John Edwards of USBM developed a computer-assisted mathematical/physical model that predicts a relatively small effect of flaws in a low-permeability coating on the radon flux from a sandstone-type matrix. FIELD TEST Since all actual experimental work with wall sealants showed some beneficial effect on radon attenuation (even if not as exciting as the "nearly 100%" predicted by Hammon), USBM was encouraged to extend its evaluation to an actual operating uranium mine, and awarded a contract for that work to Arthur D. Little, Inc. in September 1979. We were fortunate in obtaining the voluntary cooperation of Atlas Minerals Division of Atlas Corp., who operate a mill and several underground mines in and around Moab, Utah. Atlas made available for our use a small T-shaped drift in their Pandora Mine in LaSal, Utah, and provided space for instrumentation and recordkeeping by our field crew in a surface building near the mine entry. Atlas also provided electricity and water to the test site, together with assistance in establishing necessary ventilation, removing rubble from the site, conducting periodic WL surveys and furnishing auxiliary man-power for the heavy hard work of coating the walls with gunite prior to application of the polymeric sealant. There have been no publications of the deformation and recrystallization orientations of the metal beryllium, yet pronounced textures would certainly be anticipated since it is close-packed hexagonal in structure. Having an axial ratio approximately that of magnesium, beryllium probably deforms by nearly the same slip and twinning mechanisms that operate in magnesium, and the textures are likely to be similar or but slightly different from the magnesium textures. In the tests reported below this is found to be the case; the textures are found to differ from those of magnesium only in the details of the scatter from the average orientation. This report covers not only samples rolled at room temperature, but some rolled at elevated temperatures. Since magnesium has been suspected by some investigators of altering its crystallo-graphic deformation mechanism at elevated temperatures, it was considered possible that beryllium might do so and alter its textures accordingly. No pronounced alterations were found, however. Unfortunately, the theory of deformation textures is not in a state of development that permits one to deduce the deformation mechanism from a knowledge of the textures, which means that the similarity of textures at different rolling temperatures, reported here, cannot be taken as definite evidence that the deformation mechanism is actually the same at all temperatures. The general similarity of the deformation textures of magnesium and beryllium also extend to the recrystallization textures of the two metals, judging by the pole figures for recrystallized sheet presented in this report. Samples were prepared in the form of composite sheets made up of small pieces stacked in a pile. Each piece was trimmed with scissors so that an edge was parallel to the rolling direction, dipped in paraffin, and assembled into the pack by aligning it under the cross hair of a microscope. As the desired orientation was obtained on each piece it was secured in place by touching with a hot wire to melt the paraffin. A stack of ten or fifteen pieces was built up in this way, then trimmed to the shape of a T; the portion to be X rayed was then etched to the shape of a wire about 0.045 in. diam with 6N HCl. This method of shaping the sample is a modification of that used by Bakarian on magnesium.' The absorption of the rays in the sample was so slight that it caused no difficulty in interpreting the films. Exposures were made with a 0.030 in. diam pinhole, using molybdenum radiation (40 kv, 25 ma, Type A film at 5 cm, 2 to 3 hr exposures). With the recrystallized specimens it was found necessary to oscillate the specimen so as to reduce the spottiness of the lines. A range of oscillation of 5" was SUB- cient to produce reasonably satisfactory patterns, though the quality was somewhat inferior to that of the deformation texture patterns, and only two degrees of intensity were read from the arcs on the films. Typical photo-grams for each of the deformation textures and the recrystallization texture are assembled in Fig 1. The pole figures were plotted in the usual way with the intensity of the various portions of the diffraction rings estimated by eye. Seven to nine films were made of each sample and each was carefully read in plotting the pole figures. Typical series included exposures with the beam normal to the rolling direction and at 11, 26, 41, 56 and 71" to the cross direction, plus two exposures with the beam normal to the cross direction, and at 11 and 79" respectively to the rolling direction. The rolling was in each case considered sufficient to develop the final texture: the reduction by cold rolling was 84 pct (from 0.0045 to 0.0007 in. thickness), following prior hot rolling in longitudinal and transverse directions and recrystallization; the reduction by hot rolling at 800°C was 90 pct (0.010 to 0.001 in.), following similar prior treatment; the reduction by rolling at 350°C was 88 pct (from 0.005 to 0.0006 in.) after similar prior treatment. The recrystallization texture was determined on a sample rolled at 350" to a reduction of 88 pct (0.0165 to 0.002 in.) after similar prior treatment, then mounted between steel strips to keep it flat and annealed at 700" in an atmosphere of argon. In the course of the last decade, the concept of sustainability has turned from a catchword into a vision - a vision to which politics and industry feel increasingly committed. In terms of the energy industry, the key criteria for sustainable development are supply security, economic efficiency and social responsibility. Coal is able to meet all these criteria if it is produced in conformity with high safety standards through the use of modern mining technology and converted into electricity with the aid of environmentally friendly methods. Among the fossil energy resources, coal will, according to the vast majority of global energy scenarios, continue to be the most important input energy in power generation for the foreseeable future. Coal is therefore today, and will in future continue to be, an important element in ensuring sustainable energy and raw material supply, worldwide, in Europe and also in Germany.

T has been known for some time that both'inter-granular carbide and intergranular oxide phases cause brittleness in molybdenum. Parke and Ham' indicated that 0.0025 pct 0 present in molybdenum after solidification from the melt was sufficient to induce intergranular brittleness during forging. However, material containing 0.06 pct C could still be forged. However, adding this amount of carbon to insure deoxidation causes the formation of carbides on freezing. These carbides are precipitated at grain boundaries, and Rengstorff and Fischer' have shown they have an unfavorable effect on the room-temperature ductility of molybdenum. Take? in 1928 proposed that the solubility of carbon was a constant value of 0.30 pct from room temperature up to 1800°C. In 1935, Sykes, Van Horn, and Tucker' obtained X-ray data suggesting that the solid solubility of carbon in molybdenum was between 0.07 and 0.09 pct at temperatures from 1500" to 2100°C. The a-solubility line for carbon was included in the Mo-C diagram given in the Metals Handbook as a tentative line based on the data of Sykes, Van Horn, and Tucker. In order to determine the partial phase diagrams for these systems, it was necessary to construct a high-temperature furnace suitable for heat treating molybdenum at temperatures up to 4000°F. A molybdenum resistance furnace was built for this purpose in which samples could be heat treated in a purified atmosphere and quenched from any desired temperature.' Experimental Work Solubility of Carbon: Arc-cast molybdenum supplied by the Climax Molybdenum Co. and 18-gage molybdenum wire samples produced by powder metallurgy at the Fansteel Metallurgical Co. were used in determining the a-solubility line for the MO-C system. The cast molybdenum contained 0.032 pct C initially. Two lots of 18-gage wire were used, one containing 0.011 pct C and the other 0.005 pct C initially. All material contained a carbide phase as received. Fig. 1 illustrates the carbides found in the untreated material. Heat treatment in a purified hydrogen atmosphere was found to reduce the carbon content in the as-cast molybdenum. Purified argonT also decarburized molybdenum samples at temperatures above 3500°F; however, the carbon content remained constant during heat treatment in purified argon at lower tem- peratures. The argon was purified by passing it over titanium at 750 °C and then through a magnesium perchlorate drying tower. The hydrogen was purified by passing it through a commercial hydrogen deoxidizer, followed by a drying tower. Specimens having different initial carbon contents were heat treated in argon at 3500°F for periods ranging from 5 min to 5 hr and were analyzed for carbon. Samples of the same final carbon content had the same microstructures regardless of time at temperature. Furthermore, a gradient between center and surface in the amount of undissolved carbide particles present was never observed. It was concluded that at these low carbon levels, and at the high temperatures involved, diffusion proceeds so rapidly that the specimen is always substantially homogeneous in carbon content, in spite of the gradual loss in carbon. Based on the above findings, the following procedure was used to determine the carbon-solubility limit at 3000°, 3500°, and 4000°F. At each of these temperatures, a number of samples were heat treated, as shown in Table I, and rapidly cooled to room temperature. Since the samples lost carbon in proportion to the length of time heated, a series of samples were obtained of varying carbon contents. By use of a rapid cooling rate, the phases present at the high temperature were retained at room temperature. All samples were examined microscopically. "SynopsisAlthough women all over the world have been involved in mining activities for centuries, mining has always been considered a very masculine industry due to its heavily male-dominated workforce as well as the physicality of mining work. The mining industry has not been an obvious career choice and preferred place of employment for women; women were mainly employed in administrative and advisory positions. Until 1994, women were legislatively prohibited from being employed in underground operations in South Africa, but the Mines Health and Safety Act, No. 29 of 1996, removed these restrictions. In addition, new mining legislation (the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act, No. 28 of 2002) and the accompanying Mining Charter make specific provisions for the inclusion of women in core mining activities and require 10% of core positions to be filled by women.This article voices perceptions of the physical ability of women employed in core mining positions. Findings are drawn from empirical work undertaken at platinum, phosphate, and copper mines. Quantitative and qualitative research paradigms are used. It is evident that women find it extremely difficult to perform mine work that requires physical strength and stamina. Practical recommendations, informed by the literature review and empirical findings, are made with the objective of contributing to the sustainable deployment of women in the mining industry.IntroductionFor many years, mining has been considered the foundation of the South African economy. Although the mining industry in South Africa is currently under considerable pressure and experiences various challenges, including escalating operational costs, electricity tariff increases, safety-related issues and associated production stoppages, poor productivity, labour unrest, and reduced demand both globally and domestically, it remains a key contributor to the national economy and development of the country (IDC, 2013, p. 9).Until 1994, women were legislatively prohibited from meaningful participation in the mining industry and were denied access to skills and jobs, self-employment, and entrepreneurship. The newly elected democratic government in 1994 initiated substantial socio-political and economic transformation in South Africa. Nearly every sector in the country was transformed and re-shaped, primarily through sector-specific legislation, but also through negotiations between government, industry, and labour unions to create and refine the so-called sector charters, which included the Mining Charter. The vision of the new regime, the African National Congress (ANC), was to ‘transfer power to the people and transform society into a non-racial, non-sexist, united, democratic one, and change the manner in which wealth is shared, in order to benefit all the people’ (ANC, 2007)."

The estimation of the magnitude of pressure changes which occur in mine ventilation circuits is of primary importance to the mining engineer in making changes in an existing mine or in projecting the ventilation requirements of a new mine. It is a formidable task in many cases, because no adequate theory is available and empirical data are unreliable or even lacking. The common practice of increasing one's estimate of the mine static pressure by an arbitrary "safety factor" to compensate for the unknown is a poor substitute for accuracy. Generally little difficulty is encountered in calculating friction losses in mine airways. As long as the friction factor can be reliably estimated, the well-known Atkinson formula gives accurate results. However, it is in the determination of shock losses that the ventilation engineer encounters difficulty and is apt to resort to an arbitrary allowance. Shock losses may constitute as little as five or as much as twenty-five percent or more of the overall pressure drop in the mine, and such allowances are generally completely unsatisfactory. Since other shock losses have been covered by McElroy (1), this paper deals with a long-neglected source of shock and pressure change in ventilation circuits, divergence and convergence of airflows, here referred to by their more common mining terms, splits and junctions. PREVIOUS WORK There is practically no fundamental information available in ventilation literature on the splitting and junction of airflows, either in mining or mechanical engineering periodicals or handbooks. Fluid mechanics textbooks seemingly avoid the subject of divergence and convergence, except for brief empirical treatment. The only investigation reported for mine ventilation systems was by Weeks, et a1 (21), in 1933. Although applicable to the case of line brattices in coal mines, it cannot be applied to the general case of mine splitting and junctions involving change of direction with little or no area change. In dealing briefly with the subject of shock losses at splits and junctions, McElroy (1) suggests only that they be considered comparable to bends, with losses at junctions being increased 50 pct to allow for interference of merging streams. He recognizes the importance of quantity ratio but concludes that exact quantitative data are lacking to compute losses at splits and junctions. A very capable summary and analysis of the state of knowledge in industrial ventilation and fluid mechanics regarding losses due to divergence has recently been reported by Gilman (3). In considering all earlier work dealing with both air and water as fluids, he compares results on a common basis and obtains good empirical agreement. For divergent flow, the controlling variable in each branch is the quantity ratio, although the deflection angle is of secondary importance. Empirical equations are presented for straight and 90-deg branches with varying velocity ratios, assuming branches smaller than the main duct. These formulas are modifications of the Borda equation for abrupt contraction and expansion. The only information available on shock losses in convergent flow are approximate experimental data presented by Alden (4) and the Manual of Recommended Practice for Industrial Ventilation of the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists. Alden considers the effects of both quantity ratio and deflection angle. The data indicate an effect opposite to that observed in divergence, the shock loss varying directly with quantity ratio. SHOCK LOSS THEORY Because pressure losses due to shock have been found to bear a constant relation to the mean velocity of flow in a given conduit, they are frequently expressed as a dimensionless function of the velocity head, termed the shock loss factor. The solubility of nitrogen in liquid Fe-B alloys has been measured up to the solubility limit for the formation of boron nitride. The activity coefficient of nitrogen increases with increasing boron content in the range 0 to 7 wt pct B. From experimen -tal data, values have been calculated for the B-N interaction parameter e3 at temperatures in the range 1550" to 1750°C. A value of 0.038 has been estimated for the boron self-interaction parameter eg at 1550°C. The standard free energy of decomposition of boron nitride into the elements dissolved in liquid iron has been determined to be: ?F° = 45,900 -21.25T in the range from 1550° to 1750°C. The nitride is assumed to be of composition BN. BORON nitride has an unusual combination of properties which make it appear attractive in a wide range of engineering applications. Some of its more important and most recent applications are in the nuclear area, particularly in connection with the liquid-metal cooled reactor concept now receiving considerable emphasis. Boron nitride has a high degree of stability at elevated temperatures. It also has excellent ma-chinability and the ease with which its crystals deform suggests applications as a lubricant. These properties stem from a hexagonal layer-type structure similar to the structure of graphite. One of its primary uses to date has been for seals in liquid-metal pumping systems. It is also used in nuclear reactors as an insulating layer to separate two solid metals which are not themselves compatible under the conditions of temperature and atmosphere in which they are used. Its inertness to liquid metals has also suggested use as a mold-release agent in casting processes. In addition to its excellent machinability and reported inertness to liquid metals such as iron, silicon, aluminum, copper, and zinc, boron nitride has high thermal conductivity and excellent thermal shock resistance. This combination of properties would make it appear ideal as a refractory crucible material for refining of high-purity liquid metals, for example high-quality steels. However, since it is known that concentrations of boron as low as 50 ppm can have a marked effect on the physical properties of certain steels,' in particular on the creep and stress-rupture properties, an investigation was undertaken to define accurately the chemical equilibrium among boron, nitrogen, and liquid iron in the range of steelmaking temperatures. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Two experimental approaches to this problem were employed: a Sieverts' method and a quenching method. In the first method, the Sieverts' technique was used to measure the equilibrium nitrogen solubility in liquid Fe-B alloys of 0 to 7 pct B as a function of nitrogen gas pressure over the melt. The solubility limit of the boron nitride phase formed was determined by the point of departure of the nitrogen absorption from Sieverts' Law. This technique has been applied to liquid Fe-Ti alloys by Rao and parlee,' to liquid Fe-A1 alloys by Evans and Pehlke,3 and to solid Fe-V alloys by Fountain and Chipman.4 In the second method a melt of liquid iron was held in a crucible of boron nitride under a known partial pressure of nitrogen gas. After thermodynamic equilibrium was attained, the melt was quenched in a stream of helium and then analyzed by wet-chemical methods for boron and nitrogen. The Sieverts' apparatus used in the first method was essentially of the same design as the one described by Pehlke and Elliott.5 The charge materials were vacuum-melted high-purity iron (Ferro-vac E) supplied by the Crucible Steel Co. and -325 mesh boron powder supplied by Cooper Metallurgical Associates of Cleveland, Ohio. The boron contained less than 0.02 wt pct O, according to supplier's analysis. Recrystallized alumina crucibles were used to contain the melt. Examination of solidified melts showed these crucibles to be satisfactory with no evidence of any reaction or physical penetration of the crucible wall by the melt. The melt temperature was measured by a disappearing filament-type optical pyrometer sighted vertically downward on the melt surface through a 1/4-in.-diam sight hole in the crucible lid. "Mining companies are under constant pressure to reduce their cost structures to sustain profitability. In mines using an open stoping mining method, dilution often has a significant effect on profitability. At Target mine in South Africa, dilution in some open stopes was found to exceed 10%, falls of ground being a major contributor to the problem. This dilution can reduce the recovered grade from 5.5 to 4.5 g/t, resulting in a potential loss of about R21 million per month based on a gold price of R240 000 per kilogram. In addition to the cost of dilution, the cost of damage to, or loss of, trackless equipment as a direct result of falls of ground in open stopes is significant. Other associated costs include transport, hoisting, secondary blasting, milling, and plant treatment of waste material. Stable open stopes are essential in order to reduce falls of ground. Back-analyses of stope instability at Target mine have indicated that conventional rock mass failure criteria are unsuitable for stope design. An alternative strain-based criterion has been developed, and has proved to be very successful, allowing the stability of open stopes to be calculated reliably. Since its implementation in 2010, dilution and equipment damage have decreased markedly, creating value for the mine. IntroductionMines that make use of an open stoping mining method aim to extract only the ore, leaving the waste behind. Many orebodies have well-defined boundaries between the ore and the waste rock. In such orebodies, the introduction of waste into the ore due to overbreak dilutes the grade. In massive disseminated orebodies, dilution is less problematic. Overblasting, falls of ground, or other causes may result in dilution. A study undertaken in Canada (Pakalnis et al., 1995) found that approximately 51% of all underground metal mines utilized open stoping mining methods and, from surveys conducted at these mines, open stoping operations experienced dilutions of up to 20%, and occasionally more. Dilution of this magnitude has a significant economic impact on any mining venture. Research carried out in Australia by Capes (2009) came to the same conclusion."

Further information on the surface characteristics of the silicate minerals was obtained by experimentally correlating the oxygen-silicon ratio of the silicates with their electrokinetic properties. Specifically, the behavior of the minerals in an electric field was investigated using zero point of charge as a parameter. A modified electrophoresis cell was used for the determination of electrophoretic mobilities. It was shown that there is an increase in the zero point of charge with increasing oxygen-silicon ratio in the silicates. Finally, a chemical interpretation was presented to describe the surface phenomena observed in the experiments. In recent years great interest in surface chemistry has produced a number of methods to study the surfaces of minerals and to observe the phenomena occurring at their interfaces. One such method is discussed in this paper. A rather complete review of the surface characteristics of the oxide minerals has been undertaken by parks,' but, a similar study has not been made for the silicate minerals. Two previous papers by the authors2'3 attempted to remedy this situation. In these papers it was demonstrated that the reaction between the silicate mineral particles and acidic water involves mainly an exchange of metal ions for hydrogen ions on the surface of the solid, leading to an increase in pH of the aqueous phase. Also, the degree of reaction was found to depend on the oxygen-silicon ratio of the silicate structure, being least for the quartz and greatest for the olivines. A hypothesis was then set forth explaining that upon the fracturing of a silicate mineral, the oxygen-metal bond (which is almost entirely ionic in character) will break more easily than the stronger oxygen-silicon bond. This results in the exposure of unsatisfied oxygen sites on one hand and active, exchangeable cations on the other. These active sites on the fractured surfaces are then available for reaction with the hydrogen ions in acidified aqueous solution. Thus, an increase in degree of adsorption of hydrogen ions occurs as the oxygen-silicon ratio increases due to the presence of a larger number of active sites on such minerals. A correlation between oxygen-silicon ratio and electrokinetic properties will be further pursued in this paper from both the theoretical and experimental points of view. Efforts will then be made to present a chemical interpretation of surface phenomena observed in the experiments. It is believed that this study may supply pertinent information on the behavior of silicate minerals in froth flotation systems. ELECTROKINETIC STUDIES Equipment: In a previous paper,2 Deju and Bhappu described a simple method for determing the zero point of charge using a potential across a cata-phoresis cell and observing particle movement by means of a Rayoscope* optical system. This setup is simple in design and operation and extremely reliable. With care, reproducible results within 1.5% accuracy may be obtained. A new setup has been developed, based partly on the design by Zeta-Meter Corp.4 and partly on previous cells used at the New Mexico Bureau of Mines. This new, modified cell is shown in Fig. 1. Dilute Fe-Si alloys (0 to 5 wt pet Si) were cold-worked by making filings at room temperatuve. The analysis of the broadening of the X-vay powdev pattern peaks yields anisotropic particle sizes normal to the (110), (100), and (112) planes which are a consequence of deformation faults (probability a) and twin faults (probability p). The combined fault probability (1.5a +ß) increases from 0.01 in pure iron to 0.02 in Fe-5 pct Si. The root mean square stvains vary with crystallographic ovientation due to elastic anisotropy of the alloys, and increase from about 0.0035 in pure iron to 0.005 in Fe-5 pct Si measured in the [100] direction. Assuming that deformation and twin faults occur with equal probability, the X-ray data would imply that the stacking-fault energy does not change upon alloying. THE crystallographic aspects of the plastic deformation of dilute Fe-Si alloys has been studied many times since the observation of glide band structures by Barrett et a1.l These glide bands were much straighter than the wavy bands observed by Gough2 in unalloyed iron nearly 40 years ago. This difference in the morphology of the slip band structure has been verified many times, most recently by replication electron microscopy3 and dislocation etch-pitting methods.4,5 These observed differences in deformation behavior have been considered to result from the degree of cross slip that occurs in pure iron and in the Si-Fe alloys. The lowered tendency for cross slip would result from a lowering of the stacking-fault energy of iron by the silicon alloying addition. Experimental evidence for this lowered stacking-fault energy in the Si-Fe alloys, obtained with transmission electron microscopy, is the observation of dissociated dislocations in Fe-6 pct si6 and Fe-3 pct Si alloys,7 and the observation of sharply defined cellular substructures in Fe-3 pct si6,7 compared to the more diffuse substructure in zone-refined iron.' The activation energy for recovery of cold work is greater in the Si-Fe alloys than it is in pure iron, indicating that cross slip has become a more difficult process.9 The purpose of this investigation is to determine the change in stacking-fault probability from the broadening of powder pattern peaks in dilute silicon-in-iron solid solutions, when cold-worked at room temperature. The knowledge of the stacking-fault probability and the dislocation density, both of which can be deduced from line-broadening analysis of two orders of reflections from (110), (200), and (112) planes, will permit us to calculate the change in stacking-fault energy upon alloying silicon into iron. Previous X-ray investigation of cold-rolled Fe-5 wt pct Si (100)[001 ] single crystals did not reveal any line broadening, whereas cold-rolled Fe-3.1 wt pct Si (001) [110] and (001)[100] single crystals10 showed line bro2dening as a consequence of small particle sizes (-200A) and root mean square strains (-0.25 pct), which are comparable to those found in cold-worked iron filings.11 EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A series of five Fe-Si alloys containing nominally 1 to 5 wt pct Si and pure iron were cold-worked by making filings at room temperature. The actual silicon content deviated at the most by +0.1 pct which is of no significance in the present study. The carbon contents of these materials were less than 0.02 pct. With recovery being important in optimising the business performance of a laterite and sulfide plant and with water being a precious resource in Australia, there has been increased pressure for companies to improve their methods of improving liquor recovery and improving water recovery in both laterite and sulfide plants. This has resulted in new control technologies such as the Manta Cube being applied on countercurrent decantation (CCD) and thickening circuits which is necessary to improve stability and optimise the liquor and water recovery in these processing plants. This paper describes the benefit of applying these new control techniques on CCD and thickening circuits in some of the mineral processing plants in Australia.

The purpose of this note is to call attention to a source of difficulty which can be responsible for inaccurate estimates of wetting liquid pressure gradients in mixture flow experiments of the Hassler1 type. It has been our experience occasionally to observe what were indicated to be negative pressure gradients, and these were regarded as anomalous in the sense that physically they seemed to contradict the requirement that the flux be in the direction of the potential field. At first it was thought that our scheme of assembling barriers and core sample led to such asymmetry in the distribution of isobars that the manometric leads at each end of the core were responding to internal pressures (within the core sample) which could be either positive or negative with respect to each other, and which in fact might tend to reflect on different effective core lengths in an unpredictable fashion as the wetting liquid saturation was changed. However, no compelling evidence of this possibility has been established. In addition, we were cognizant of the requirements to be satisfied in selecting manometric instrumentation to minimize the delay in response of the manometer to the differential pressures being measured, and were thus assured that our observations of anomalous pressure gradients could not be explained by faulty instrumentation. What we suggest is that if a leak sink occurs in the fluid lines connecting the core to either side of the differential manometer, errors exceeding 100 per cent may result in the estimation of wetting liquid pressure gradient, even though the leak is of such small magnitude that its existence would tend to be obscured by evaporation effects. This is because in a system with leaks at the specified places, the manometer rec- ords at steady state the pressure drop across the manometer barrier elements in addition to the pressure drop across the core sample. This possibility will be illustrated below analytically and by numerical example for the special case where the leak occurs on the high presure side of the core, since we are especially desirous to explain the significance of our observations of the so-called negative pressure gradients. It will be indicated, however, that leak sinks on the low pressure side of the core can account for observations of anomalously high values of pressure gradient, and that multiple leaks on both sides of the core can provide for some compensation so that the errors in pressure estimation are reduced. However, the major point to be emphasized is the fact that the impractical-ity of detecting the small leak sinks which give rise to the difficulties makes it a complicated task for the experimenter in a particular case to know with certainty that his estimation of pressure gradient lies within the limits of error which can be tolerated. Fig. 1 shows the electrical analog of the flow system we have employed in our studies. The inflow and outflow barriers. Federal standards for refuge alternatives (RAs) mandate that they not exceed a Steadman apparent temperature (AT) of 95 °F (35 °C) at an assumed metabolic rate of 325 W, a limit that appears to be arbitrary. Occupants in an RA spend most of their time at rest (a metabolic rate less than 325 W), and thermal equilibrium can likely be maintained at an AT > 35 °C. The purpose of this study was to examine the upper limit of sustainable heat stress during 4- and 8-h exposures at rest. Five men underwent five 4-h trials (phase 1: AT range 39 to 49 °C, 90% rh) and five 8-h trials (phase 2: AT range 46 to 56 °C, 90% rh) in a semi-recumbent position. Descriptive statistics for gastrointestinal temperature (Tgi), heart rate (HR), systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP and DBP), sweat rate, fluid intake, urine color, urine specific gravity (USG), and changes in body mass are reported. Mean Tgi for all trials ranged from 36.9 to 37.3 °C, and mean HR for all trials ranged from 61 to 75 bpm. To determine the effects of increased heat exposure, differences in heat strain between 4- and 8-h trials were examined via repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA). As AT increased, there were no significant changes in ΔTgi and ΔHR from 1 to 4 h in the 4-h and 8-h trials. During the 8-h trials, as AT increased, there was a difference in ΔTgi between 4 and 8 h. In conclusion, there was support for sustainable exposures resulting in no significant increase in physiological strain at an AT greater than 35 °C AT, with a sustainable limit (no increases in Tgi due to increases in AT) below 46 °C AT. Although the participants were not representative of coal miners, the results provide support for sustainable exposures greater than 35 °C AT at an average metabolic rate of 155 W.

IT is well known that plastic deformation alters many of the properties of a metal and subsequent heat-treatment partially or completely restores these properties.1 In the deformed or strained state, the metal is unstable and tends to change toward a condition called a "strain-free state." The transformation occurs through recovery, recrystallization, and grain growth-processes that may take place singly or in combination. The distortion of the lattice of an individual grain of a metal in a state of strain may be rather complex in nature, because plastic deformation produces: (I) dislocations within mosaic blocks; (2) elastic variations of the lattice spacings; and (3) gross alterations throughout the lattice, especially along slip planes, along composition planes between a grain and its mechanical twins, and along boundaries of deformation bands. These gross alterations are of the nature of bent planes or rotated regions of the crystal lattice and are revealed by a spread in the orientation of the grain. Although we cannot describe these strains and their formation accurately because of insufficient knowledge, we can, nevertheless, use the information as well as possible to obtain a better understanding of recovery processes. In recovery, the lattice of a grain is not made anew as it is in recrystallization, but is improved or mended in such a way that the basic structure remains unaltered. Until recently observations were that recovery produced no marked changes in the shapes of spots in Laue diffraction patterns, whereas recrystallization did, but now it is known for silicon ferrite2 that Laue spots may become quite sharp entirely through recovery. Consequently, the shape of Laue spots alone would not be a suitable test to distinguish between recovery and recrystallization. There is considerable evidence that the micro- structure usually does not change visibly during recovery. Absence of a visible change in the microstructure, therefore, provides a sufficient test of recovery in many cases. However, including this observation in a definition of recovery as a necessary condition (this is usually done) is unfortunate, because recovery may, as will become evident later, produce new grain boundaries that are visible not only in the microstructure but also in the macrostructure. For the present, therefore, let us say that a necessary condition for a process to be one of recovery is that the principal orientation or orientations of a deformed grain be essentially unchanged throughout the transformation toward the strain-free state. Several transformations may occur that fulfill this condition, and the nature of the distortion in a grain indicates what these must be if the lattice is to be mended in part or fully. Several productive areas in the Mid-Con-tinent are broadly and briefly examined with respect to the present depth of drilling on productive structures, and the thickness of sediments remaining untested. Evidence is offered to show that a vertical mile to two miles of untested but prospective formation remain within reach of the drill. In no case would a well deeper than 15,000 ft. be required, and in most cases to no greater depth than 10,000 ft. Recent outstanding success of deeper prospecting in West Texas demonstrates the merits of deeper drilling on known structure. Introduction New fields discoverd during I942 equaled or exceeded the number in any preceding year. The total amount of oil found by these discoveries was less than in any previous year, for which accurate records are available. This means that the pools now being discovered are much smaller than in past years. This is to be expected, since the prospects available during 1942 were largely those overlooked in the earlier years and therefore represent a second or third order (in quality) of structural feature. This failure to find pools of good size and quality raises grave doubt as to the security of our future oil supply. With military needs rising almost daily, and the period of heaviest con- sumption in our war effort still in the future, there is even a growing doubt as to our ability to supply the amount needed for our ultimate victory. This does not mean that our reserves are inadequate, but rather that our "capacity to produce" may be inadequate. Lacking large fields with flush production, our capacity to produce is rapidly approaching our current needs. ,Since the industry is unable to find the large new fields necessary to keep a safe margin of "capacity to produce," other means are needed. It seems obvious that one of these should be deeper prospecting on the large, proven, productive structural features now known. The exploratory wildcat is drilled primarily in search of a trap and the reason for failure to find oil and gas in nine out of ten cases is due to the absence of a suitable trap under the drill site. Therefore, deeper drilling on a known structural feature that is productive largely eliminates the greatest hazard in wildcat drilling. While by no means all the oil known today is found in structural traps—in fact, some have estimated that less than half is so located— the fact remains that structural traps are far more commonly the oil fields that have multiple horizons of production superimposed one over the other. Outstanding examples are the Eldorado field in Kansas, the Tonkawa and Cushing fields in Oklahoma, the Louden and Salem pools of Illinois, and the richest and most prolific of all structural traps, the Long Beach, Ven-tura and other similar fields of California.
