TO those engaged in the purchase and sale of gold- and silverores, mattes and bullion, the frequent differences in the gold- and silver-contents, as reported by different assayers, is a source of much annoyance and expense. The desirability of uniform methods of assay has long been recognized by certain refiners who specify in their bullion-contracts the method to be adopted in assaying the bullion. One large producer of base bullion employs at each refining-works with whom it has a bullion contract an assayer whose duty it is to see that the bullion is sampled and assayed according to contract-specifications. For the assay of gold- and silver-bullion, standard methods are now generally adopted; the reeult being that differences seldom occur. While we cannot hope for anything near perfection from fireassay methods for ores, mattes and base bullion, as carried out cornmercially, such methods may be made to yield results which answer all commercial requirements, and they will probably be retained for obvious reasons. The object of the present paper is to point out some of the sources of error and to show the importance of more uniform methods of assay and close attention to the details of the work. The sources of error in the assay of ores and mattes are: improper sampling; losses of the precious metals during fusion, scorification and cupellation; imperfect elimination of the base metals on the cupel and imperfect extraction of the silver during the parting in nitric acid. It is not the object of the present paper to enter upon the subject of sampling; but a few remarks may be of value. There has been considerable discussion recently in Colorado upon the frequent differences which occur in the assays of Cripple Creek gold-ores, and these differences have been attributed to various causes. DURING the past three years the Surface Preparation Committee of the American Mining Congress Coal Operators' Committees has been collecting data on dewatering and drying washed coal, and on screening coal in representative plants in the Eastern and Central bituminous fields. Because of wide variations in bed moisture, such data can be compared only after deducting the bed moisture. It was found that practically every company used a different routine for moisture sampling and determinations. Some reported the moistures as total moistures, others as surface moistures, cur-dried moistures, or oven-dried moistures. For most of the reports it was necessary to esti-mate, from a consideration of the bed moisture and other data available in a given case, corrections to be made in order to obtain surface-moisture figures as a common basis for comparison. At any plant, and regardless of bed moisture, the percentage of surface moisture remaining in a product when the dewatering, or a given stage of the dewatering, has been completed, is the real measure of what has been accomplished. The descriptions and data given with Fig. 1 show that surface-moisture figures show relationships that would not be shown by total moistures. Therefore bed moisture should be deducted, or, if more practicable, the surface moisture of the. products should be meas-ured direct. A preparation engineer finds one per cent, or even a part of one per cent, of surface moisture a very important consideration in the results of his efforts to find the most effective and economical methods of reducing and controlling the surface moisture in his products within the required limits. Therefore it is important for him to have accurate measurements of surface moisture with minimum uncertainty as to whether they some-times include less than the surface moisture and at others all of the surface moisture plus an unknown part of the bed moisture.

Dramatical increase in the CO2 concentration in the atmosphere has led to the climate change, which poses a significant threat to human life on Earth. CO2 sequestration via mineral carbonation is the one of the most effective method for mitigating global warming, and is the only way that could store CO2 permanently. In recent years, integrating mineral carbonation via ultramafic mine deposit has received significant attention due to its high potentiality towards commercial application. This review compiles the work conducted by various researchers over the last few years on integrated mineral carbonation processes in mining industry, which use the mine waste materials as CO2 feedstock for mineral carbonation. This paper initially introduces the basic theory of mineral carbonation, with a brief description of various techniques that enhance the rate of mineral carbonation. The enhanced mineral carbonation strategies include pre-treatment of feedstock by thermal, chemical and mechanical activation, and carbonation in a direct or indirect carbonation routes under gas/solid phase or aqueous phase. This paper then introduces the scope of application of integrated mineral carbonation. This includes the types of mine suitable for integrated mineral carbonation, the properties of mine waste materials preferable for CO2 sequestration, and the worldwide locations potentially viable for integrated mineral carbonation. Moreover, this paper critically reviews and discusses the integrated mineral carbonation process in mining industry. The integrated mineral carbonation processes include modified passive carbonation techniques at tailing dams, and ex-situ carbonation routes using fresh tailings. The focus of the discussions is the role of reaction condition on the carbonation efficiency of mine waste with various mineralogy, and the drawback of each integrated mineral carbonation process. All the discussions lead to the suggestions on the technology improvement in the integrated mineral carbonation process. Finally, this paper reviews the economical assessments on the existing integrated mineral carbonation process. Literature to date indicates that the value-add by-products (i.e. recovered metals, valuable carbonated products) play an important role in commercialization of an integrated mineral carbonation process.

The use of small substations for the supplying of 275-volt energy to the locomotive and cutting machines in coal mines is a well-established practice. A few years ago, when labor costs were lower, these substations were located as near to the load as possible, and an operator was provided for each station. This practice has now become so expensive that substations are being located with reference to other mining machinery, such as hoists or pumps, so that one operator can look after both. Sometimes the substation is operated by one whose duties make him traverse quite a large area. In such cases the interruption of alternating-current supply may produce a long interruption in the direct current, as the station cannot resume service until this man reaches it. Such interruptions interfere seriously with production and may easily counterbalance the supposed saving gained by such operating methods. The grouping of substations for convenience in operating may also result in excessive copper loss and consequently poor trolley voltage, with its attendant evils of low locomotive speeds and increased locomotive motor maintenance. The speed of the coal-cutting machines will also be reduced. By relieving the substation of its burden of the operating labor cost, the most economical location, from an electrical standpoint, may be chosen. The matter of machine insurance should also be considered. If an attendant is caring for several kinds of equipment, he cannot watch the machine continually for signs of trouble; therefore, continued overload, phase failure, low alternating-current voltage, bearing trouble, etc. may result. Some partly automatic equipments have been installed; these have protection against low voltage, reverse current, and bearing trouble and are provided with automatic reclosing circuit breakers. This is a step in the right direction but it does not go far enough to give first-class machine insurance. The saving in maintenance costs is often the smallest item, when considering the automatic substation as machine insurance. The Tertiary carbonate aquifer of central Florida is composed of about 2/3 calcite and 1/3 dolomite with minor amounts of quartz and apatite. The Mg content of the calcite is lower in the recharge areas than in the deeper confined parts of the aquifer system. Various geochemical lines of evidence indicate that much of the dolomite is of penecontemporaneous origin but that some may have been formed much later, possibly by ground water. Theoretical studies indicate that the Mg/Ca ratio in solutions is about unity for the three-phase equilibrium, calcite-dolomite-water. Solutions, such as ocean water and some subsurface brines, have Mg/Ca ratios higher than one and should represent dolomitizing solutions. In the areas of principal recharge to the Floridan aquifer, ground water is undersaturated with respect to both calcite and dolomite, and the Mg/Ca ratiois as low as 0.05. As the water moves downgradient, the Mg/Ca ratio systematically increases and approaches unity; saturation of the solution with respect to both calcite and dolomite also increases with length of travel in the system. Thus, in the zone of active potable-water circulation, the chemical process is one of dissolution of minerals until saturation is reached or exceeded. However, in the deeper brackish-water zones that underlie peninsular Florida, dolomite may be forming where the Mg/Ca ratio is greater than one. The necessary Mg may be derived from ocean water or brines recycled through the system as the hydrologic regimen is changed. The driving force may be simple mixing, relative fluctuations of sea level, or a combination of mechanisms.

Deposition of uranium in the South Alligator river area has been influenced structurally by reverse faulting; and lithologically by carbonaceous shales and sandstones. Mineral assemblages suggest a mesothermal-epithermal epigenetic mode of origin. The ultimate source of the uranium and associated metals is probably in deep seated magmatism which is expressed at surface in the widespread penecontemporaneous vulcanity.

"Measuring mud bed level in a sedimentation device is an important control variable. Methods used to date for this purpose have had limited success providing continuous, consistent measurements at a reasonable price. This paper describes a new instrument for detecting the mud bed / liquor interface as well as bed density profiles. The state of the bed is measured directly with sensors located in the thickener. Data from bench-scale and full-scale tests show that the bed level is well defined and easily detected. In addition, full-scale testing revealed unprecedented information about thickener beds. Variation in bed density gave new insight into thickener bed dynamics, providing design and control opportunities never before possible. This novel instrument can significantly improve thickener control by providing reliable and consistent bed level measurements. It is also capable of measuring bed density profiles that can potentially identify significant operating problems early enough to take corrective action before experiencing costly shut downs. INTRODUCTION Numerous studies and papers have been devoted to the subject of thickener design and operation to achieve specified throughput and discharge densities. Mathematical models have been developed that present methods for sizing thickeners and predicting performance under varying process conditions. The compression effect of deeper beds on dewatering performance is a recognized phenomenon (Wilhelm and Naide 1981). This is one variable of many that are inter-related and influence thickener performance. For example in the steady-state, continuous operation of a thickener, if the solids feed rate increases and the bed level remains the same, the underflow discharge rate must increase with the result of solids concentration being lower. The interactions of these parameters are at the heart of thickener models. One such model (Burger and Narvaez 2007), predicts solids concentration profiles increasing downward and discontinuities between settling zones. This model uses sediment height (bed level) as a parameter that influences capacity calculations to achieve the specified solids concentration of the underflow. Knowing the bed depth is critical to maintaining stable thickener operation. Implicit in these modeling strategies are some basic assumptions such as homogeneous distribution of solids in the different settling zones, plug flow of solids through the settling zones and steady state operation of the thickener. The accuracy of these assumptions has not been verified because there has been little visibility inside the bed of full size operating thickeners. Testing of the instrument presented in this paper demonstrates that it provides a degree of visibility of the dynamics in a thickener not previously possible and indicates that the basic assumptions of the modeling strategies may not be completely accurate."

Leveling is a standard process in the rolling mill to eliminate flatness deviations. The process layout is based on models and the leveling result depends on the accuracy of the material parameters in these models. Even small deviations from the correct assumptions can have a major effect on the final flatness. Thus, after leveling the products may look optically flat, but subsequent to a final cutting process springback occurs due to residual stresses. The objective of this work is to analyze the influence of material parameters and gravity on the flatness after leveling. To evaluate the sensitivity of the process, an FE parameter study is exerted that reveals the influence of fluctuations in material properties in the case that the leveling setup is fixed. Gravity is neglected to not conceal flatness deviations. Examples of this study are rerun in a further step under consideration of gravity to also analyze its influence on the resulting flatness and residual stresses. Finally, to analyze the consequence of the residual stresses, all information of the plate from the previous step are transferred while gravity is suppressed to prompt springback. This study revealed that slight deviations of the material properties can lead to uneven plates in simulations where gravity is not considered. If gravity is taken into account, the unevenness is concealed and the plate seems flat. A springback simulation of the same plate shows that strong residual stresses are still present and would lead to unevenness if e.g. the plate were cut.

This paper explores the connection between the stresses observed and the failure mechanisms present in the modelled cemented paste backfill. In order to look at this connection, the authors have used a previously developed model to conduct a sensitivity analysis of the model?s strength and permeability input parameters. The results from the sensitivity analysis were then compared to determine what causes modelled stresses and failure mechanisms to vary. Increased insight into the behaviour of the modelled paste will help clarify how paste behaves in the field.

Bingham has produced 6 per cent. of this country's copper. In total production, it ranks fourth among the copper camps of North America, the order being Butte, Michigan, Bisbee, and Bingham. In its annual production, it held that same rank until 1919, when its production was exceeded by the combined production of the Globe-Miami district of Arizona. Bingham has also been a lead camp of the first order. Utah ranks third among the lead-producing states, and its production comes largely from three camps which, in the order of their productivity, are: Bingham, Tintic, Park City. Bingham's silver production is important, but it does not rank high as a silver producer. Utah owes its rank as first among the silver-producing states to Tintic, a camp 40 miles due south of Bingham. The United States Mineral Resources reports a total production from Bingham for the period 1865-1920 having a gross value of $528,043,432. History of the Bingham District Bingham is on the eastern flank of the Oquirrh range 30 miles southwest of Salt Lake City, from which it can be reached in an hour by auto, or by the Denver & Rio Grande or the Bingham & Garfield railroads. The automobile route is a paved road across the floor of Great Salt Lake Valley, through farming country. The Bingham & Garfield railway leaves the level of Great Salt Lake at the northern end of the Oquirrh range, and in 20 miles it climbs 2100 ft., and deposits the traveler upon a shelf cut in the side of Bingham Canyon below most of the mines, which are farther up Bingham Canyon and its tributary Carr Fork. Below lies the town, a narrow ribbon running for a couple of miles along the bottom of a canyon 2000 ft. deep—an almost impossible site for a community numbering, in prosperous times, 5000 to 7000 inhabitants drawn from all quarters of the globe. Up the canyon and down, and beneath the steep slopes nearby, and beneath the town itself, are the mining operations of over half a century. During the past two decades one mine, the Utah Copper, has become so gigantic an operation as to dominate all other activity in the camp. The Piedmont province of the southern Appalachians is the focus of interest for many exploration geologists. In the past, only those deposits with significant surface exposure were exploited. Thus, few deposits have been found and relatively little exploration has been conducted in recent years. Modern geochemical and geophysical techniques can alleviate this problem of concentrating on exposed ore bodies by allowing us to "look through" the soil and saprolite to detect the presence of significant mineralization at depth. This paper will attempt to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of several geochemical exploration techniques in the Piedmont province of Cabarrus and Stanly counties, N.C. The area chosen for study is shown in Fig. 1, lying almost wholly within the Mt. Pleasant quadrangle, N.C. The area is on the eastern boundary between the Charlotte belt, a zone of plutonic and intermediate grade metamorphic rocks, and the Carolina Slate belt, a series of complexly interbedded volcanic and sedimentary rocks of predominantly low metamorphic grade. The area is considered to be an early Paleozoic active, continental margin. 1 As is typical of most of the piedmont, outcrop is sparse. Figure 2 is a sketch map of the general geology of the area under study, showing the Charlotte belt rocks in the north-western quadrant and slate belt rocks to the east. Within the area are a number of old mines and prospects, the most famous of which are the Furniss and Phoenix mines in Cabarrus County. All are reported to have contained Au and Cu. Ag and Pb were reported from some. A summary of the deposits is given in Table 1.

INTRODUCTION A Workshop on Hydraulic Fracturing Stress Measurements was convened by the authors in December 1981 in Monterey, California under the auspices of the U.S. Geological Survey and the U.S. National Committee on Rock Mechanics. There are now over a dozen groups of investigators around the world who are actively using the hydraulic fracturing method for making in-situ stress measurements. Because of the extensive recent experience of these different groups, the Workshop enabled forty investigators from eight countries to comprehensively assess the status of the method. Based on the presentations and discussions at the Workshop, in this paper we briefly discuss the current status of the hydraulic fracturing stress measurement method concentrating on problem areas where further research needs to be done. A complete account of the presentations at the Workshop will be available through the Proceedings of the Workshop which will be published by the U.S. National Committee on Rock Mechanics in early 1983. The most exciting aspect of the Workshop was the discovery by the various groups of investigators that others were having very similar experiences with the method. The consensus among the different groups of investigators at the Workshop was that they were recording very similar pressure-time data in the field, they were able to interpret them in similar ways, and they were achieving results that were quite encouraging because of several factors. First, the results at various locales were found to be internally quite consistent. This was reported by investigators from Germany (Rummel, Baumgartner, and Alheid, 1982), Japan (Tsukahara, 1982), Australia (Enever, 1982), and the U.S. (see, for example, Haimson, 1978, 1982a; Zoback

"INTRODUCTION Uncontrolled mine fires originating in exposed coal beds through the acts of careless or irresponsible persons present a serious threat to buildings, surface property, and the life and health of persons near the affected area. Apparently, the seriousness of such fires is not fully understood by property owners or those residing in the vicinity, as practically nothing has been done to alleviate conditions. In many instances, such fires have been active for several years before property owners or civic organizations have shown any interest toward having the fire extinguished. Recommendations by Bureau of Mines investigators in the interest of controlling such fires are seldom followed, as the Bureau cannot provide the funds for doing the work.Several uncontrolled and widespread fires are burning along the outcrop of coal beds and in underground abandoned mine workings within a 25-mile radius of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pa. If these fires are permitted to continue to burn unabated, the ultimate results may be far-reaching. Most of the outcrop fires investigated are believed to have originated from burning rubbish, forest fires, or workmen, hunters, or others building fires near the outcrop of ,the coal beds. In other instances, smoke and fumes have suddenly appeared in the vicinity of abandoned coal-mine openings, indicating that a fire has either burned its way along the outcrop of the coal bed or has traveled through the abandoned mine from another location. An underground or outcrop coal-mine fire will be very likely to continue to burn as long as an oxygen supply is present.; and, so far as is known, such fires do not stop burning automatically until virtually all combustible matter is consumed."

INTRODUCTION A thorough evaluation of the geologic material being considered must be conducted to determine the feasibility of constructing a large-scale underground facility in a deep geologic formation. The design and construction of a nuclear waste repository in basalt, due to the unprecedented nature of the project, adds significantly to the need for thoroughness of this evaluation and mandates that geoengineering data and analysis be of the highest quality. The investigations required to collect the data encompass in situ measurements and observations, as well as laboratory and field tests. Mathematical (numerical) models, which are required to predict the long-term performance of the repository structure, must be developed to evaluate rock mass behavior at canister, room, and repository scale and eventual 1 y must be validated through in situ tests and monitoring. The information generated from these geo- mechanics investigations is essential for assessing site suitability and will be utilized in the development of the repository design, the engineered barrier design, and the evaluation of repository performance. The Hanford Site near Richland, Washington is one of nine sites throughout the nation being investigated by the U .S. Department of Energy as a possible location for the first high-level nuclear waste repository in deep geologic formations. The process of site characterization is currently in progress. If the site is nominated by the U.S. Department of Energy, an extensive program will be undertaken, the culmination of which will be a decision on the suitability of the site for waste disposal. The fundamental hydrodynamic principles governing the production of oil from wells have been carefully studied and evaluated by many investigators. These prior studies are quite complete and cover virtually the entire field of oil production and recovery.' One of the most important measurements in production studies is that of the bottom-hole pressure at various rates of production.2 It is the purpose of this paper to outline the technique and economics of fluid-level measurements as applied to pumping wells and to review briefly other methods for obtaining bottom-hole data. The applications of bottom-hole pressure or fluid-level measurements are based on simple hydrodynamic principles. Under equilibrium conditions, pbh = hd + pg + pch [1] when pbk = bottom-hole pressure, Ib. per sq. in. absolute, h = height of fluid in well, ft., d = average fluid density, Ib. per sq. in. per foot, p, = weight of section of gas column 1 in, square from fluid level to casinghead, Pch = casinghead pressure, Ib. per sq. in. absolute. For over a decade the Osterberg Load Cell has been successfully used to determine the shear capacities of drilled shafts. Since the test method measures side shear directly, analytical complications due to the influence of end bearing resistance are removed. The data suggest that the side shear component of a drilled shaft's capacity is often more significant than end bearing. Given the interest in the use of side shear in drilled shaft design in compressible materials, it is important to examine factors that can influence capacity. We have found that some factors widely believed to influence capacity, such as slurry type, are not as important as commonly thought in most materials. Factors that are not usually considered as important, such as casing use, hoop spacing, concrete slump, concrete additives, spacers and rebar clear cover, seem to be more influential with respect to side shear capacity. For example, substantially lower than predicted shear resistance can occur when the rebar clear cover is small with respect to the cage diameter. We observe this most often in fine-grained cohesive soils. This effect can be exaggerated if the rebar cage has tight hoop spacing, if the concrete has low slump and if the hole is not straight. We have also noted that improper use of temporary casing can have a dramatic effect on side shear resistance. In some cases we have observed tested shear capacities reduced to less than 5% of either predicted or available shear values.

ROLIN1 in 1961 published a phase diagram for the CaF2-Na3AIF6 system in which substantial (-20 wt pct) solid solubility of CaF2 in Na3A1F6 at the eutectic temperature (945°C) was indicated. The evidence was that the halt in cooling curves associated with the eutectic was lowered progressively on the Na3AlF6 side. H olm2 has recently confirmed the experimental fact, but attributes it to evaporation losses shifting the composition into the ternary NaF-CaF2-Na3A1F6 system with a consequent lowering of the eutectic temperature

The application and development of monitoring and control techniques of coal mines in China is mainly described in the paper.The techniques of mine control and monitoring system have been developed as an important means of production dispatch, command and management with ever-increasing coal production and gradual raising of the level of mechanization and centralization of continuous mining. The continuous stage monitoring and control system in China coal mines has been developed from the initial single fixed plant monitoring, and the technique of computers has also been applied in the system for productive and environmental monitoring, featuring a new type of mine control and monitoring equipment of China.

Analytical costs are a major part of exploration programs in developing nations which may lack adequate laboratories. Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS), a variant of atomic emission spectroscopy, can reduce exploration analytical costs and can provide the analytical results in <1minute. CPI is now marketing battery-powered, backpack mounted analyzers, using LIBS to analyze for many elements of interest to the explorationist. LIBS is well suited to the analysis of elements in industrial minerals. Limits of detection in ppm for some of these are: Li-1, Be-2, Na-100,B-33, Sr-10, Ba-300, Cs-1, K-500, Fe-500, Mg-500, andTi-500.
